In the mid-1950s the importation of foreign oil began to encroach on traditional coal markets such as railroad steam engine fuel, home heating, electrical generating plants, and others. Many of the smaller coal companies with substantial coal reserves subsequently found that they could no longer continue to mine economically and merged in various ways with larger established coal mining concerns. As the seats of top management and authority were removed from the mines to large metro centers such as New York, Pittsburgh, and Chicago, the more personal relationship between mine workers and management that had existed prior to these mergers began to be eroded and replaced by 'remote control mine management. The disappearance of this face-to-face contact of upper management with mine employees tended to create barriers blocking simple effective communications between coal mine management and labor. In examining the human relations aspects of the coal mining industry, many elements, some concerned with work and others not, have depicted the industry as almost devoid of good applied human relations and communications practices, and, in truth, little has been done to alleviate this situation . In past years many coal producing companies, with the exception of one of the largest, failed to adequately define the term “communications” as it applied to their companies, whether internally or externally. Internally many still place heavy reliance on written communications such as company-wide newspapers to do the job of communicating with their employees which they feel ought to be done. One company puts an inordinate belief in its company "newspaper" as the primary instrument to stimulate its work force into increasing productivity. Primarily aimed at the workers, who greatly outnumber the salaried administrative people, this publication mainly documents the fortunes of individual mine workers who are felt to have achieved something with their lives, e.g., a mine worker who had managed to put four children through universities, the

Gordon, Philadelphia, Pa.: There can be no objection to the use of cross-compound blowing-engines; and when they are condensing they are susceptible of great range of duty with slight loss in efficiency. By those who have use for the full heat of the waste gases, this type of engine is advantageous; but many furnaces are not so located. The pig-iron is their finished product, and the gases are to be employed only for furnace-use. In this case simple engines are preferable, being less expensive and having less parts to take care of. These reasons determined the introduction of the engines, a sketch of which is distributed at this session. There are three of these engines to furnish blast for two furnaces, for a make of abont 250 tons per day, using 75 per cent. anthracite and 85 per cent. magnetic ores; and they are expected to blow up to twenty pounds pressure per square inch. The (001) fiber-texture component, found in aluminum rods extruded at subzero temperatures, consists of particles of various sizes having extremely irregular shapes dispersed in a nonuniform way throughout a matrix of the (111) orientation. Apparently the (001) texture component is not a result of recrystallization but rather is due to the presence of reimanents of the original grains which fragmented from the main body of material as it reoriented towards the (111) orientation during the extrusion process. Both X-ray line-broadening measurements and electron-microscopic observatwns indicate that, after extrusion, regions having (001) orientations are in a state of relatively less strain and distortion than (111) regions, suggesting that the former have undergone less plastic deformation. A (001) fiber-texture component is also found after complete recrystallization of extruded specimens. Approximately one third of the recrys-stallized volume has this orientation. The (001) fragments, formed during the extrusion process, act as nuclei for recrystallization; i.e., the pain boundaries separating these fragments from the matrix are capable of migrating during annealing. Electron-transmission microscopic observations and X-ray line-broadening measurements indicate that (001) regions recover at a much more rapid rate than (111) regions at annealing temperatures up to 187°C. ALTHOUGH some mines have been completely mechanized, on the whole mechanical equipment has made slow progress in the coal fields. Coal mining is particularly well adapted to hand labor. The skillful hand miner can keep his working place safe under difficult roof conditions, remove impurities from the coal at the point of origin, and produce a maximum percentage of large-size coal, so as to command the highest price on the market. Hand mining has also the advantage of low capital investment per ton of production and moderate carrying charge when the mine is idle. Though animal haulage gave way to electric locomo-tives and hand cutting to mining machines, beyond these concessions most of the tonnage is still produced by manual labor. But factors over which producers have no control are speeding the change to mechanical mining. The additional investment in underground equipment and surface preparation plant must be offset by a great increase in tons per man-day, and to do this the employees should be able to utilize as much of their time as possible on production. In the installation of mechanical mining, the only change in method usually has been to add loading machines to a mine already developed for hand loading. Because of a lack of suitable equipment, few mobile loading machines have been installed in seams of coal less than 4 ft. thick; the mechanization in the thinner seams has been confined largely to shaking conveyors and hand loading onto chain conveyors. Mechanical mining requires an organization that is prepared to study its particular problem from production territory to market in recognition of the changed factors arising from the use of loading machines at the working face, and other causes, such as safety of men and property; high wage scale on hourly basis; concentrated working territory and rapid extraction from a given area; change in the percentage of sizes of coal produced and effect of this on average realization. There are also the coal-cleaning problem; increased capital investment, maintenance, obsolescence, and the relation of all these to the spread between realiza-tion and production cost. The Taconites Are Ready, the editorial appearing on P. 933 of the September issue, has provoked comment from several informed engineers to the effect that the indicated profit margin was considerably exaggerated. The cost figures in the editorial, taken from the Congressional Record, were characterized as inaccurate by some correspondents. The theme of the story was, however, substantiated in the announcement (P. 1023, October) that Republic and Armco had joined forces in a $160 million project for taconite development. Chief among the dissenters was E. W. Davis, , Director of the Mines Experiment Station at the University of Minnesota. Mr. Davis has worked up the following set of cost figures:

THE strike of the coal miners began on April 1, as had been expected, the entire force of unionized miners-both anthracite and bituminous-going out and making this the most widespread strike of record. Up to the present writing there has been no serious inconvenience to industry in general, the accu-mulated stocks of coal being large and the non-union mines having continued to make a substantial production. However, the union labor leaders, having concentrated their efforts toward inducing the non-union miners to go out also, met with some measure of success in certain fields and created a shortage of coking coal, which caused iron makers to bank a few furnaces. The strike of textile workers in New England spread further. Here and there, throughout the country there were sporadic troubles with the builders. Rail-way labor was the subject of continued palavers, which did not get anywhere. On the whole the events of April were in line with the forecast that this would be a year of labor troubles. In domestic politics, the soldier bonus bill, having been passed by the House, went to committee consider-ation in the Senate. Public opposition to it manifestly waxed. On the floor of the Senate the tariff bill was under consideration and is drawing nigh to passage, without there being much consideration of its probable economic consequences. It is going to be a very high tariff and there is much in it that is equivalent to subsidizing small and normally unprofitable industries at the expense of the people as a whole. Abroad affairs were more quiet, superficially at least; than they were in March. In Egypt, India and South Africa things calmed, down, so far as we know, but in Ireland there was continued turmoil. The Irish, having won their freedom to the same degree as the Canadians, have entered upon violent quarrels among themselves, more over phrases than anything .else, so far as we can see. Lloyd George obtained a spectacular vote of confidence from Parliament and thus postponed, the exigency of a general election.

RUDOLF GAIL, Miami, Ariz.-Since I wrote the paper on flotation which is in your hands, important developments have taken place, and, for this reason, I will try in a few words to bring it nearer up to date as far as the Inspiration plant is concerned. You, may have noticed that in the Inspiration concentrator, flotation is not solely relied upon for the recovery of the coarser material, but that flotation tailings are split into a sand and a slime product on drag classifiers. The sand product is treated on tables which thus supplement the work of the flotation machines. Extensive tests have shown, us that, if we wanted to, we could leave out these tables and substitute additional flotation machines, as they will make fully as good, if not a better recovery than tables on the deslimed feed, but the treatment would be more expensive, especially in view of the fact that oils are required which cost more than those which we are now using in our main flotation plant. We have, however, decided to apply flotation treatment to our table middlings. I would also like to add a few words regarding the treatment of oxidized copper ores. Although our experience shows that the addition of hydrogen sulphide and other soluble sulphides effects a very good recovery of copper carbonates with certain ores, we have not been able to prove that we could use it advantageously for the ore mixture which we are treating in our concentrator, and for this reason, have looked toward leaching for extracting the carbonate and silicate copper that we are losing now. Experiments in this direction are going on and are giving very encouraging results. It may interest you to hear that we intend to use limestone for the precipitation of the copper which goes into solution, as electrolytic precipitation seems to be out of the question on account of the diluteness of the resulting solutions, and precipitation by iron was rightly objected to on account of the unavoidable contamination of the water supply. We feel very hopeful about the success of our limestone precipitation which, if it holds what it seems to promise, will develop into a novel feature of copper metallurgy.

There is a need for concepts and techniques developed specifically for blasting in areas where the rock is loose or highly fractured. Common practice has been to use techniques developed in hard homogeneous rock and reduce the amount and strength of explosive. However, this rule cannot cope with all of the special characteristics of highly fractured rock and has not adequately taken care of the problems of overbreak, gouging, and wall damage. The main problems encountered when blasting in highly fractured rock are controlling the amount of rock broken, minimizing the damage done to the remaining wall material, and adapting blasting methods to rapidly fluctuating ground conditions. In addition, because it frequently needs timber support right into the blasting area, there is also the problem of how not to shoot out the timber when heavy loading is needed in order to offset a loss of impact caused by deflection of the detonation wave off the numerous rock interfaces, and by the absorption of the wave by resilient clay particles. Another consideration is the fact that less attention needs to be directed toward producing satisfactory fragmentation of the broken rock. Those blasting methods designed for breaking hard rock into manageable segments are, as a rule, not needed in highly fractured rock which will usually break along its own numerous fracture lines.

Few of the present generation of American steel metallurgists are aware of the very important part taken by Swedish engineers in the successful development of the Bessemer proeess, and I am afraid some of the older ones have forgotten it. Certainly, I think, most of us would have said that Terre Noire was the first to introduce the use of metal direct from the blast-furnace. It is very well, therefore, that honor should be given to whom honor is due. I can speak from personal experience upon one part only of Prof. Akerman's paper; namely, the effect of the temperature at which the molten metal is cast upon the quality of the finished steel. As a part of the systematic study of the alloys of iron under the auspices of the Engineering Foundation, and preliminary to the commencement of comprehensive work on this larger subject, the authors have undertaken an investigation of the available literature dealing with the alloys of iron and silicon. The purpose is to collect all the data in English and foreign languages and present them in two monographs, one of a more scientific and the second of a more industrially useful nature. Of course, a great deal of information upon the constitution of the iron-silicon alloys was found specificially upon the changes of phase in the equilibrium diagram and the different phases present, such as solid solution, chemical compounds (iron silicides), etc. While no extended research was contemplated in the particular study undertaken, nevertheless the data collected proved to be so contradictory in many respects that a simple study of some of the outstanding problems involved in the constitution and equilibrium diagram was undertaken. Because research was not a primary object of the work, and also because of the extreme industrial importance of the silicon alloys between 0.80 and 14 per cent. silicon, and finally because of the unsatisfactory state of knowledge existing as to these alloys, the experimental investigation was limited entirely to alloys with less than 10 per cent. silicon. Discussion oF Continuous Series It has often been said in print that the iron-silicon alloys form a continuous series of solid solutions from 0 to 15 per cent. silicon. This claim the authors are inclined to doubt: first, because the alloys from 0 to 4.25 per cent. silicon are ductile and malleable at atmospheric temperature, while those with 5 per cent. or more of silicon are comparatively hard and brittle. Furthermore, the alloys with more than 4.25 per cent. silicon are comparatively hard and low in ductility at atmospheric temperature, but become much more ductile when heated slightly. The effects of crude oil cornponents on the wellabil-ities of sandstone and limestone were investigated. Fractions containing cornponents differing in molecular weight and molecular structure were obtained from crude oils by distillation, extration and chromatography. Individual fractions were then tested for their effects on rock wettability. Tests indicate that sundstone wetta-bility may he changed by a complex variety of surfactants varying both in molecular structure and molecular weight. Limestone appears to be particularly sensitive to basic, nitrogenous surfactants. INTRODUCTION Investigations in recent years have shown that petroleum reservoir rock wettability can exert a significant influence on the efficiency with which oil can be produced by water flooding. While most reservoirs are presumably water-wet, they niay range in their degree of water-wettability from near-neutral to strongly water-wet.'" Reservoir wettabilities other than strongly water-wet are likely to be induced by adsorption of surface-active components froni the crude oil on the pore walls of reservoir rock.:' Little is known, however, about the nature of the surface-active materials which are likely to be adsorbed by the reservoir rock. Due to the complexity of crude oils. attempts made in the past90 isolate these surface-active components have met with only limited success. It is probable that many different types of surface-active materials arc indigenous to crude oils and that many of these may be adsorbed to varying degrees by reservoir rock. This was cxolored in the studies discussed in this paper. The over-all objective in these studies is to ascertain whether the wettability of a given reservoir can be determined by examining the surfactant content of the reservoir crude. To this end, crude oils were examined to determine the variability of indigeneous surfactants with regard to chemical type and molecular weight. Crude oils were separated by distillation into fractions differing principally in molecular weight, by chroma-tography into fractions containing compounds differing in polarity, and by solvent extraction into nitrogenous and non-nitrogenous fractions. Individual fractions were then tested for their effects on the wettabilities of sandstone or limestone rock samples. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Fractionation of the Crude Oils Samples of Miocene, Eocene and Jurassic crudes were distilled at temperatures not exceeding 200°C. The final stages of distillation were completed in a molecular still at pressures down to three microns of mercury. Fifteen to 30 fractions were obtained from each crude oil. These cuts were sufficiently broad that separation can be considered to have been effected principally on the basis of the molecular weights of the constituents of the crude oil. A considerable portion (20 to 40 per cent) of the crudes would not distill under these conditions. The residues were recovered and tested with the other fractions. Fractions differing in polarity were separated from a crude of Pennsylvanian age and an extracted sample of Miocene oil by chromatography, using a solid adsorbent. Since surfactants are, for the most part, polar compounds, chromatography should separate many of the surfactants from the crude oil. Such a separation should provide fractions containing compounds differing in molecular structure. Nitrogeneous compounds were extracted from Miocene crude oil with a solution of sulfuric acid in meth-anol. The residual oil was further processed by chonia-tography. Each of the fractions obtained by thesc procedures was dissolved in a non-polar solvent (xylene) and diluted to its original concentration in the crude oil. No attempt was made to maintain an anaerobic atmosphere above the samples while they were being dissolved. These solutions of the fractions were then tested for their effects on the wettability of sandstone and limcstone as discussed in the next section. Measurement of the Effects of Crude Oil Fractions on Rock Wettability No entirely satisfactory method for measuring rock wettability has yet been developed. All methods used are empirical. The imbibition test was used in these studies. This test is based on the tendency of a rock to imbibe the wetting phase spontaneously. For example, if a strongly water-wet rock is first saturated with oil and then placed in water, the water will quickly invade the rock by capillarity and much of the oil will be displaced. If the rock is slightly water-wet, water irnbibition will proceed more slowly and, in many instances, considerably less oil will be displaced. A water-saturated, oil-wet rock will imbibe oil. The initial rate with which water (or oil) imbibition takes place indicates, qualitatively, the degree of water (or oil) wettability of the rock.

The copper-bearing ores concentrated at the Anaconda plant of the Anaconda Copper Mining Go. are principally a mixture of copper and iron sulfides associated in a gangue consisting of quartz, lightly altered granite and feldspars, with sphalerite and galena and more rarely barite and hubnerite as accessory minerals. The predominant sulfide is pyrite. The copper minerals present are: chalcocite, bornite (erubescite), enargite, chalcopyrite, covellite, tetrahedrite and some tennantite. Normal concentrator practice removes a slime prior to ball-mill grinding. The deslimed ore is ground to approximately 10 per cent plus 65 mesh for flotation. Two selective flotation circuits are used, one for deslimed ore and one for slime. Microscopic studies of concentrator products disclose such an interlocking of copper minerals with pyrite that any material increase in concentrate grade entails additional grinding unless recovery is sacrificed to a considerable extent. George W. Maynard, New York, N. Y.:—It is well known that there are many magnetite-mines of which the ore is too low-grade for direct use in the blast-furnace. For carrying out the sintering process, the preliminary step, in the case of magnetites, is the separation of the ore from the gangue by magnetic concentration. The resulting fine-grain product is very objectionable in the blast-furnace, and when used must be a very small percentage of the charge. The sintering process has saved the situation by furnishing a product which is absolutely ideal on account of its cellular structure. (In reply to questions by W. J. Tudor, and Joseph W. Richards, the following additional information was given by Dr. Maynard.) The percentage of iron in the product is determined entirely by the degree of concentration of the raw material and is practically not increased by the sintering operation. The magnetic concentrates at Port Henry and at the Benson and one or two other mines contain from 65 to 67 per cent. of metallic iron. The cost of sintering is from 39 to 41 cents per ton of product, including superintendence, depreciation, and repairs. The itemized figures are about as follows : Mixing (including labor), 24; power, 9; ignition, 5; repairs, 3; total, 41 cents. Prof. J. W. Richards, South Bethlehem, Pa.:—From a metallurgical standpoint I question the accuracy of the statement on p. 374: " C.—An increased reducibility of the iron so treated. (This has been conservatively estimated as 5 per cent. better than the best available ore.)" It seems to me that when a material is' sintered in this way, the constituents present, as lime, silica, and alumina, have a chance to form a compound with the iron oxide; that such a compound, if formed before the material goes into the blast-

Although a number of articles appeared during the war advocating the use of cadmium in lead-tin solders, very little information of value can be found in the literature regarding the properties of solders containing cadmium. In most of the published articles the cadmium seems to have been considered merely as a partial substitute for tin in a tin-lead alloy rather than as an essential constituent of a ternary alloy. The primary object of the substitution of cadmium for tin was to lessen the amount of tin required, at a time when the latter was scarce and high-priced, and thus to produce a cheaper solder. While this object was accomplished, the new properties resulting from a change from a binary lead-tin alloy to a ternary lead-tin-cadmium alloy were not given proper consideration in many cases. For the past few years, the American Smelting & Refining Co. has been marketing a very considerable amount of cadmium in the form of lead-tin-cadmium alloys for use as solders for certain special purposes, and the successful use of these solders suggested that if more extensive knowledge were available concerning the properties of lead-tin-cadmium alloys of various compositions their field of usefulness might be materially extended. The investigation described in the present paper was undertaken to obtain this information and, by means of tests under conditions approaching those of practical use, to determine the suitability of cadmium solders for various purposes. Characteristics and Requirements of Solders in General General Physical Properties.—When cast into bars, solder should present a smooth and bright appearance free from oxide inclusions and bubbles. Ductility should be as great as possible without sacrificing tensile strength, and vice versa. Hardness and specific gravity are not of any great importance. Melting Characteristics.—The melting or solidification range is important. This statement applies both to the extent of the range and to the actual temperature at which complete solidification occurs. A rather narrow solidification range is desirable in soft solders in order that solidification may take place quickly. TheRe is a small area about Murray where bedded gold quartz veins occur in Prichard slate. The ore taken from the upper levels, during the early days, was free milling and was treated by stamp milling and amalgamation. There was likewise a considerable placer working. The report is current that tungsten (scheelite) was encountered, which interfered with the amalgamation in the stamp mills and which, in placering, collected in the riffles in the sluice boxes and clogged them. Consequently, in the quartz mines, the scheelite, when encountered, was rejected, being thrown into the waste, sometimes inside the mine and at other times outside on the dump. The free surface ores became worked out and as the ore in depth became pyritic and rebellious to amalgamation the mines closed down. Last spring tungsten ore brought a high price, near $80 per unit, 60 per cent. W03 and up. This so stimulated the output of tungsten ore that old dumps were explored and waste stored in the mines was gone over. Tungsten was likewise mined from virgin ground. So the district produced quite heavily for a time. The condition now is different. The price is not so high, about $20 per unit WO3, which makes profits questionable when mining in new ground. The accumulations from early day mining have been exhausted and the output has greatly declined. The Golden Chest mine was the heaviest producer of tungsten. The months of June and July were spent at this mine studying the problem. Since the mine had produced both gold and tungsten, we looked forward to the problem of recovering both from what might be called a gold-tungsten ore. A study of the Golden Chest vein showed this was not to be the case. While gold ore and tungsten ore come from the same vein, the tungsten ore is confined to a more or less disturbed or distorted portion

IN recent years, solders containing 20 per cent tin with no bismuth or cadmium have been developed by a few companies, and personnel have been properly instructed in their use. In addition, since the tin shortage, a number of solders containing less than 10 per cent Sn, and some with no tin, are being used in special applications; however, a solder of this type has yet to be developed that is satisfactory for general use. [ ] The purpose of this investigation was to develop an alloy containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin, with no cadmium or bismuth, having solder properties equivalent to or better than those of substitute solders now specified containing i8 to 20 per cent tin (Table I), or even approaching the properties of the standard 40 to 60 tin-lead solder. The wartime restriction of bismuth and cadmium, elements that have beneficial effects on fluidity, solidification range and strength, makes it increasingly difficult to develop a general-purpose solder containing a maximum of 15 per cent tin. In the course of this investigation, 11 elements were used in various combinations with the basic 15-85 tin-lead alloy. These elements were antimony, silver, copper, indium, thallium, lithium, calcium, barium, potassium, sodium and arsenic. In all, 116 low-tin solders were investigated, with the idea of developing a solder that will give satisfactory working properties, specifically in regard to "wetting" of copper, brass and iron, solidification range, capillarity and shear strength of a soldered joint. The relative importance of these various properties plays an important role in the search for substitute solders, since it is almost impossible to retain all of the desired qualities of a high-tin solder and still make drastic changes in the alloy composition. Because of the expected uses of a general-purpose solder, it is necessary that it have properties, especially in regard to wettability, that will enable it to be used on the metals in common use. BASIC CONSIDERATIONS The maximum liquidus temperature of a solder is determined by the particular application involved and the temperature that can be obtained by the source of heat.

THE smelting of galena in the ore hearth has been practiced in many countries for several hundred years with varying success. In the United States the water-jacketed American hearths and the Jumbo hearths have found some favor, in the Missouri lead belt, where large quantities of non-argentiferous galena concentrates are produced. In form and method of operation the ore hearth has changed but little since its earliest conception. A detailed description of the furnace is not needed here; it has been fully described in most works on the metallurgy of lead and in many technical papers. Since its field is restricted to non-argentiferous galena, containing over 68 per cent. of lead, its .use is limited to a few districts; and, on account of certain disadvantages attending its operation, modern sintering and blast-furnace practice has nearly driven it out of the Missouri field. It is not generally known that the cost of producing pig lead is smaller by the hearth method than by sintering and blast-furnace smelting. Yet it is doubtful if any metallurgist knowing this to be true would recommend an American hearth installation-by reason of the disadvantages which will be briefly enumerated. The furnace has been limited to a length of from 4 to 5 ft., requiring for its operation two men working an 8-hr. shift as a maximum. The product per man is small; the work is hot and laborious; and the difficulty of completely removing the dust and fume has made it a notorious source of lead poisoning. Although suitable, for, operations on a small scale a large number of hearths would be required for a plant smelting 10,000 tons of 68 to 70 per cent. concentrates per month; and the number of semi-skilled laborers would be six times the number of hearths-a condition which is prohibitive. On account of the high percentage of dust and fume produced, a large flue and bag-house installation is required and, in the past, the handling and re-treatment of. this dust and fume has been a serious problem.

UNDERGROUND fires have been common in the mines of the United Verde Copper Co. for the past 22 years. The first fire started in the 300 Hampton stope in the fall of 1894, following a cave in that orebody. The soft and highly pyritic nature of the ores is responsible for most of these fires. Since ore characteristics, methods of mining and ventilation, have an important influence on mine fires, they will be described in this paper. Orebodies The ores are mostly chalcopyrite except on the upper levels where considerable chalcocite, black oxides and other secondary minerals occur. The orebodies are in the form of lenses and vary in size. Some are small, while others are several hundred feet in length by a hundred or more feet in width. These orebodies extend, in some cases, from the surface to the lowest levels of the mine and usually at a steep angle of inclination. There are three different classes of ores, classified in accordance with the gangue rock. The copper in all cases, except as above specified, is in the form of chalcopyrite. The largest and most important of these reserves are in a pyrite gangue. Next in order of importance are the schist ores and lastly the quartz porphyries. The pyrite, locally termed iron ores, average from 30 to 42 per cent. sulphur. The schist and quartz, porphyries vary from 3 to 25 per cent. sulphur. Mining Methods All the orebodies were worked by the overhand square-set method of mining prior to 1908; since then the cut-and-fill, shrinkage and mill-hole systems have been largely employed. But 15 per cent. of the total tonnage now extracted is from timbered stopes. Most off this is from the upper levels where the ore is soft, heavy and more or less broken to the surface. Large reserves of these ores are being conserved for more efficient methods of mining.

The discovery that strongly magnetic bodies localized near the surface of the earth could be detected by the distortion which they produced in the resultant magnetic field marked the beginning of magnetic surveying methods. From an original ability to detect bodies of magnetic iron ore and the like when located very close to the surface, these methods have been extended until today they promise to give much information with regard to the structure of such slightly magnetic material as sedimentary rock containing only a very small proportion of iron.' The recent extensions have been made possible through the development of more delicate instruments, and of methods for their use. From the original compass and dip needle, the design of apparatus has progressed until equipment is typified by magnetic balances capable of measuring the components of the earth's field to an extremely high degree of accuracy. It seems unlikely that the limit of such instrumental development has been reached. Just as the change from compass and dip needle has enabled the location of relatively minor changes in magnetic materials, so additional developments in the direction of increased sensitivity, as well as in greater dependability and constancy of operation, should reveal positively many slight changes which either escape notice in the present surveys or are so small that they cannot with certainty be separated from uncontrollable errors due to inconstant operation of the equipment. The ability to read smaller and smaller variations does not mean, of course, that deductions as to the causes of these variations will be made as accurately and definitely as is possible with the more pronounced anomalies.
