ManGanese is one of the minerals which is principally consumed in countries other than origin. Nearly 85 per cent. of the world's production is used by the United States, England, Germany and France, and roughly a third of the total is used by the United States alone. On the other hand, over 85 per cent. of the world production comes from Brazil, Russia, India, the Gold Coast of Africa and the Sinai Peninsula. It follows from this fact that practically all manganese moves across international boundaries in raw or alloy form, and much the larger part of this inovement is for considerable distances and is occan bornc. There is no indication that any one of the principal consuming countries can develop even approximately adequate supplies of its own. Under abnormal war conditions, with high prices and changes in metallurgical methods, only 35 per cent. of the needs of the United States was met from local sources, and under our recent tariff only 11 per cent. There are thousands of manganese deposits scattered about the world, but only a very few which can figure largely in supplying requirements on a modern scale. The known reserves, together with highly probable extensions and explorations now under way, indicate no shortage from a world standpoint for many deeades to come. The production and marketing of manganese is going steadily into fewer and stronger hands. The steel industry uses over 90 per cent. of all the manganese mined and is acquiring control of a considerable part of the production in all of the principal fields—the Germans in Nikopol, the English in India and Gold Coast, the Americans in Georgia, India, Gold Coast and Brazil. Some of the controlling companies arc of international scope. Concentration of commercial control is a notable tendency. A natural consequence is the growing uneasiness of smaller consumers the world over about their ultimate supplies and desire to know more definitely how and where manganese supplies will be controlled in the future. The sources of supply are few cnough to warrant the belief that more or less monopolistic elements of control arc not impossible.

The problems involved in an optimum decision making model for flotation circuit are, first of all, to characterize the feed material in terms of parameters which can quantitatively describe the network flotation action in terms of a feasible set of control actions. Once the characterization has been postulated, it is then necessary to devise tests relating to parameter sensitivity, in order that credibility of the model predictions can be assessed. Once a credible model is available, the optimum control set is determined by a hill climbing technique. Details will be reported as to the credibility of model predictions using the stochastic flotation model on a network and further, computational problems associated with hill climbing for a complex objective function are reviewed. Discussion is presented on use of the Rosenbrock technique with constraints and use of a modified objective function with constrained derivatives when employing Fletcher and Powell technique.

Refractory materials play much the same part in the producion of metals as houses and shelter for men, and it therefore seems useful to discuss sometimes the ways of manufacturing them. In fact, it appears to me that too little has been said on this important matter, probably because the manufacturers of fire-brick do not care to publish details for the benefit of competitors, but perhaps, also, by reason of the indulgent indifference of consumers. Judging from the revolutions in the manafacture of iron and steel caused by using calcareous materials for the furnace-bottoms, it does not seem improbable that in the future basic bricks may be produced suffciently strong for building also side-walls and arches, and perhaps, also, for use in blast-furnaces. But the existence of the present difficulties of great shrinkage in burning and small strength against compression, which limit the possibility of using basic bricks to Bessemer converters and such open-hearth furnaces as permit the bottom to be separated from the superstructure, seems to indicate still a long and extensive use of silica fire-bricks. I am not prepared to say anything about American fire-brick making, but knowing that industries abroad are watched with increasing interest by American manufacturers, I have imagined that this association would like to hear some facts about the way firebricks arc made in my country—Sweden. Well-known as it is that Sweden produces a high quality of iron, it is perhaps not so universally known that the same country produces a very high grade of silica fire-brick, whereby most of its own wants are supplied. In giving the following sketch I can, of course, not claim that all the facts are entirely new, but shall consider my object attained if American manufacturers can derive some benefit from the comparison of the following methods with their own, and if some discussion on this important subject can be aroused which will contribute to further progress. A 6-ft diam core drilling machine has successfully completed seven mine shafts in Virginia and West Virginia to depths as great as 465 ft. There is no practical depth limitation to this new system-a potential method in formations not easily penetrated with other large-scale drilling programs-and higher penetration rates and larger diameters are possible in some formations already being drilled successfully by other methods. The core barrel on the machine is fitted with rolling cutters such as those used on oil field rotary bits, so that less torque is required than with other large- scale drilling systems. The core is made with a wider kerf than is achieved with other coring methods, providing more working room for core drilling.

Much has been said and written about uneconomic and evil marketing practices in the oil industry, including such factors as loaning of equipment, price cutting and secret prices, commercial discounts, abuses of credit cards and coupon books, and so forth. It is not my purpose here to add to the discussion of those problems, but rather to attempt a discussion of some of the more basic factors in the general distribution economies of the industry. The economics of distribution in the oil industry cannot be regarded apart from the general economics of the industry as a whole. The attempt to regard them as separate has led many people into the fallacy of believing that the responsibility for the apparent evils in the marketing end of the business lay entirely at the door of the marketing end. Such a view fails to take cognizance of many underlying factors; we can only expect to understand the distribution economics of the industry if we understand its general economics. We must realize also that the oil industry today is essentially the gasoline industry. The oil industry may be said to have begun about 60 years ago. At the outset it was concerned chiefly with the manufacture and sale of kerosene, lubricating oils and greases. Gasoline was then a most obnoxious by-product. The early oil-marketing company was engaged almost exclusively in refining and marketing—it did not concern itself with production but bore the relation to it merely of a purchaser. It may be said that the urge of marketing development in those days, therefore, came from the refining and marketing end of the business. The raw material had not yet begun to exert its enormous pressure, nor had the producer of crude oil acquired a direct interest in the sale of the ultimate finished products. Since then great changes have taken place. With the development of the automobile came a vast new demand for the raw material from which gasoline could be made. No longer could the refining and marketing companies be indifferent to the source of that raw material, particularly in view of the pessimistic outlook then presented as to the probable quantity of oil in existence. For zinc single crystals, xo = 3o, a surface coating raises both the cleavage and yield strengths over a large temperature range. The "brittle temperature," associated with slip after completion of twinning, does not coincide with the point of intersection of the flow and cleavage curves, which is associated with twinning. A surface film has no effect on the brittle temperature, while it lowers the intersection temperature some 20°. For crystals, yn = 83o, a coating decreases the cleavage strength, making it temperature independent, as well as increases the brittle temperature or its equivalent, the intersection temperature, 20°. These observations are described on the basis of a dislocation-pile-up-at-a-barrier model for brittle fracture; in crystals x,, = 3o the number and distribution of twins play a vital role. IN a recent investigation on the effects of solid environments on the brittle fracture of zinc single crystals,' it was demonstrated that the presence of a surface film changes the cleavage strength of these crystals, either increasing or decreasing it, depending on the crystal orientation. An increase in cleavage strength of some 43 per cent was found for coated crystals oriented x, — 3o K = 28",* while a decrease of 48 per cent was observed with crystals X" = y» — 83". WHEN a subject, such as the manufacture and service of chilled car wheels, as has been fruitlessly discussed for ten or fifteen years, it is difficult to revive interest and action by the mere repetition of statements and arguments that have been made before. And when a situation involves serious responsibilities for conditions that have grown up under circumstances beyond the control of any particular individuals or authority, it is even more difficult to deal with. But there is one phase of every subject that need not involve these particular points if presented in a, proper manner; and that is, " the future state." I will try to present the subject of this communication from the latter standpoint and with the hope that all of those interested will feel disposed to give the matter attention from the basis that it is a, vitally important one to all that travel on railroads, whether as employees or officials, or as dependent on those in charge of the operation, or in the matter of materials and equipment used. The conditions of chilled wheel service have been changed so radically in the past ten or fifteen years by the use of freight cars of 40 and 50 tons capacity, that it is fair to say in the interest of all concerned in the use and in the manufacture of such wheels, that the increased strains and loads have been quite sufficient to account for much of the service results that have transpired. That proper provision was not made for increased possibilities of strength and wear, in fact that previous factors of the kind were allowed to deteriorate, is no proof that such wheels cannot be made equal to heavy service conditions as shown in the data given herein.

THE origin of wrought iron may be taken as coincident with the earliest record of ferrous products. The limitations of primitive methods of manufacture undoubtedly resulted in a material conforming to the general characteristics of what we now classify as wrought iron. Iron has been known from prehistoric times. It is frequently mentioned in Egyptian literature, and some samples in the British Museum are believed to date from 3733 B. C. Iron instruments, tools and weapons were used in Greece in 1400 B. C., and in Assyria and. Italy in 1100 B. C. History records their use in Central and Western Europe in 1000 B. C. And in Styria and Carinthia before the Christian era. The noted Pillar of Delhi is generally assumed to date from 400 A. D. The use of iron was general in Europe in the Roman Empire, and heat treatment of weapons and tools was then practiced. All of this early iron was the result of direct reduction from the ore. It serves to illustrate the ease with which the extraction may be effected, and to point out the well known principle that a malleable product of relatively high purity may be produced from high-grade iron ore at temperatures well below the fusion point of-the metal. The fact is also emphasized that there is no novelty in the seemingly ideal and constantly recurring attempts to effect direct reduction. Economic and engineering considerations have been dominant factors in dictating today's two-step practice in the manufacture of wrought iron and steel. Bear' in mind that all of this history antedated the blast furnace, and a knowledge and use of cast iron. It was only in attempts to get greater output by use of shaft-type furnaces, that cast iron was produced in Germany in the period 1300 to 1400 A. D. This was the result of longer contact with the carbon of the fuel, and higher temperatures in the furnace. This period marked the beginning of the existing two-stage operation, involving as the second step the refining of the. cast iron to a malleable product. For a time this was effected in small hearths not unlike a blacksmith's forge.

In these troubled times free enterprise is maintaining vital molybdenum output, while expanding plant, and bringing in new low grade ore reserves, at Climax, the world's largest known molybdenum deposit. Climax Molybdenum Co. is putting $25 million into additional surface plant facilities and other millions into underground development. The expansion program to be operating by 1954 includes a new mining level, crushing plant, 4000-ft conveyor, milling units, by-products plant, and housing for 198 families. Completion of this program and low grade plant will add 10,000 tons per day to present capacity and several million tons to ore reserves.

WHEN Hugh Lee Pattinson discovered, in 1829, that the crystals formed during the slow cooling of molten lead were poorer, and the remaining liquid richer in silver, than the original lead, an important step was made in the metallurgy of this metal. Being the first process applicable to the desilverization of low-grade lead bullion, it soon found its way into all European countries having such a product to treat, thereby effecting the saving of many ounces of silver annually which previously had been thrown away. The old hand process was expensive, as viewed from the standpoint of more modern methods; the labor was great anti the tonnage was small, but on the other hand the results were fairly, satisfactory. This process flourished for some time after the introduction of the cheaper Parkes process in 1852 and it is still in use in a few European smelteries. Only one notable improvement was made on the original process, that of Luce and Roan at Marseilles, France. It consisted in the application of steam for stirring and the tapping of one-third of the liquid lead, through perforated plates covering the tap holes flush with the bottom of the kettle, thus leaving two-thirds in the form of crystals in the original kettle. This modification considerably lowered the operating costs as it permitted of much larger kettles, an increased tonnage and eliminated much of the slow, hard labor of the hand process.. The Luce and Rozan process has persisted in its original form to the present clay. Stephen Tredinnick, English born, spent most of his years around the Luce and Rozan plants at Marseilles and elsewhere in Europe, coming later to Eureka, Nev., in 1878, to operate the Luce and Rozan plant at that point. Mr. Tredinnick was a competent Luce and Rozan operator and being devoted to the process he firmly believed that with modifications the costs could be so lowered as eventually to supplant the Parkes process.

In spite of the very general errlployment of nitride hardening, there is still considerable doubt as to the real nature of the mechanism involved. Experience has shown that the addition of small amounts of hardening elements to iron or steel results in a wide variety of desirable properties in a nitrided case. Perhaps the foremost of these elements is aluminum and in this investigation an attempt has been made to study the behavior of aluminum during the hardening process. It is believed that the establishment of a complete atomic picture of the metal at various stages of the process will indicate the relationships between the several kinds of atoms and their individual influences on the physical properties in a clear and direct fashion. A consideration of the problem suggests a surprising similarity between the mechanisms of nitride hardening and of age-hardening. It is now generally understood that age-hardening may take place by one of two distinct processes, the first involving the precipitation of a finely dispersed phase and the other being concerned with the modification of an existing phase. Following much the same line of reasoning, two theories of nitride hardening have been suggested. The first explanation, which has been generally discussed, particularly by Fry,' states in brief that the presence of aluminum causes the precipitation of aluminum nitride during nitriding and that this finely dispersed phase is the primary cause of hardening. The second explanation, which has not been published but which has been freely discussed by those interested in the problem, postulates the substitution of aluminum atoms for certain of the iron atoms in the several iron-nitrogen phases in the same manner that the substitutional iron-alurninurn solid solution is formed. The marked increase in hardness, as compared with the aluminum-free system, is attributed to the severe lattice distortion accompanying this replacement.

The tensile properties of iodide vanadium were determined as a function of hydrogen concentration. It was shown that the presence of 10 ppm H is sufficient to cause embrittlement of vanadzum over a limited temperature range. The temperature of the observed ductility mininlum is approximately -l00°C, this being a function of strain rate and hydrogen concentration. The yield stress of hydrogenated vanadium is raised sharply in the brittle temperature range. THE present investigation was initiated to determine the effect of hydrogen on the tensile properties of high-purity vanadium as a function of temperature and the role of hydrogen in the brittle-ductile transition. Loomis and Carlson&apos; reported a change from ductile to brittle behavior in iodide vanadium at -110°C with a return of ductility at temperatures below -140°C. Vanadium wire containing 270 pprn of hydrogen was brittle at room temperature while wire containing 100 ppm was ductile under the same conditions. Roberts and Rogers&apos; reported a ductile-brittle-ductile fracture sequence in vanadium containing 400 to 600 ppm of hydrogen. Their data show that hydrogenated vanadium is ductile at 150"C, brittle at room temperature and ductile again at -196°C. Magnusson and Baldwin found a minimum in ductility in vanadium containing 80 ppm hydrogen from tensile tests performed at several strain rates. Information available on the vanadium-hydrogen equilibrium system4 is somewhat incomplete. The absorption of hydrogen is exothermic in accordance with the decline in solubility with rising temperature. The limit of solid solubility at temperatures below 400°C has not been determined due to the difficulties in obtaining equilibrium at these temperatures. Data on the hydrides of vanadium are rather limited. Roberts6 studied the structure of VD,., by neutron diffraction, and observed the ordering of the deuterium atoms below -65°C into a primitive cubic cell with a lattice constant about twice that of the disordered bcc vanadium solid solution. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Vanadium of 99.9 pct purity was prepared by the iodide refining process6 for use in this investigation. This vanadium contained the following analyzed impurities; <20 pprn calcium, 150 ppm carbon, 200 ppm chromium, 30 ppm copper, 10 ppm hydrogen, 200 ppm iron, <20 ppm magnesium, <20 ppm nickel, <5 ppm nitrogen, 150 ppm oxygen, <50 ppm silicon, and <20 ppm titanium. specimen Preparation—Tensile specimens were machined from swaged rods of iodide vanadium. At the Vesta mines of Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. on the Monongahela River, 35 miles south of Pittsburgh, JCM Joy continuous miners and 6-SC shuttle cars are used for pillar extraction in the Pittsburgh seam. The entire output of the mine goes into coke production for blast furnace operation. Because this coal, which has high metallurgical qualities, is close to the place where it is ultimately used and because supplies with these properties are being rapidly depleted, complete recovery is essential wherever possible. With the introduction of the continuous miner into the Vesta mines, therefore, it was necessary to plan a project which would facilitate development and provide for future total recovery. Use of continuous miners under varying conditions has necessitated changes with regard to roof action, method of development, method of pillar attack, and innovations in mining. In the following pages these changes will be discussed.

Modern trends in the use of autogenous grinding of minerals have been investigated by Mekhanobr Institute. The conclusions drawn are based on experimental and theoretical investigations by the author and his coworkers. A method is suggested for determining the efficiency of converting from ball milling to autogenous grinding. A qualitative interpretation is given for comminution theory using both methods. This interpretation is used as a basis for considering both the principal trends in increasing use of primary autogenous grinding and the results of such in industrial application. Data are given from testing some ores from USSR deposits for the effect of the ore Preparation step on subsequent metallurgical treatment. Autogenous grinding is shown to be widely used in various USSR industries.

In open pit mining, as in other industries, it has I become necessary to improve operating efficiency in order to combat higher labor and supply costs. Moreover, orebodies are becoming leaner, pits are getting deeper, stripping ratios are increasing, and hauls are getting longer. There has been a steady increase in size, speed of operation, and reliability of the various machines involved in breaking, loading, and hauling ore. Changes have seldom been radical but are rather the result of steady improvement. Drilling: Notable advances have been made in the use of rotary drills and air powered percussion drills for blasthole drilling. Several hundred of these machines are now in use as replacements for churn drills in softer rocks such as limestone and shale. Their application to hard rocks such as iron ore and taconite is under current investigation, but in the Lake Superior iron mining district, open pit blast-hole drilling in ore has been accomplished almost exclusively by standard churn drilling. The only recent advance has been the use of larger machines drilling 9-in. holes. This has increased drilling speed somewhat and allowed wider hole spacing, with consequent cost reduction.

It is a well-known fact that under similar conditions a ton of pig iron can be made from any ore with less fuel when charcoal is used than when coke or anthracite is employed for heating. The cause of this superiority is entirely undiscovered, and no explanation has yet been offered which has won even temporary acceptance. Such as they are the hypotheses heretofore presented are of two general kinds, and they come from those two divisions of the working force which are so often antagonistic in all professions, the scientific and the practical men. The theory of the scientific men is drawn from the chemical reactions which are known to go on in the furnace, and it is well expressed in a recent paper by Prof. Akerman, of the Stockholm (Sweden) School of Mines. It makes the superiority of charcoal as a fuel in the blast furnace to depend upon its quick and thorough reduction of carbonic acid. This property belongs to charcoal in virtue of its porous structure. Its cells have a diameter of only one twenty-four hundredth of an inch, and one grain of charcoal has been computed to have a surface of two and four-tenths square feet. According to the theory in question, carbonic acid is formed by the first impact of the air upon the fuel; but in charcoal furnaces the acid is immediately reduced to oxide by taking the necessary amount of carbon into combination, and the gas reaches its highest reducing power even in the near vicinity of the tuyeres. Coke, being harder, does not produce so strong a reducing gas in that part of the furnace. Significant resources grading less than about 1% nickel occur in magmatic sulfide deposits of two types. In the Mt. Keith type, extensive zones of disseminated nickel sulfides occur in the central portions of certain synvolcanic dunite-peridotite sills of komatiitic affinity in Archean greenstone terranes. In the Duluth type, disseminated copper-nickel sulfides occur near the basal margins of intrusions of flood basaltic affinity associated with intracontinental rifring. In both types, the parent magmas became saturated with sulfide following the onset of fractional crystallization and the separation of the immiscible sulfide melt was accompanied by the precipitation of a relatively large proportion of silicates. The abundant silicate crystals impeded the coalescense and accumulation of the sulfide droplets with the resulting formation of large but low grade deposits.

This paper presents the results of laboratory measurements of relative permeabilities to oil and gas on small core samples of reservoir rock by five methods, and describes the influences of such factors as boundary effect, hysteresis, and rate upon these measurements. The five methods used were the "Penn State," the "single core dynamic," the "gas drive," the "stationary liquid," and the "Hassler" techniques. In those methods in which the results are subject to error hecause of the boundary effect, the error may be minimized hy the use of high rates of flow. In order to avoid complexities introduced by hysteresis, it is necessary to approach each saturation unidirectionally. Observed deviations of relative permeabilities with rate can be explained as a manifestation of the boundary effect, and disappear as the boundary effect vanishes. The results indicate that all five methods yield essentially the same relative permeabilities to gas. Of the four methods applicable to the determination of relative permeability to oil, three, the Penn State, single core dynamic, and gas drive, gave relative permeabilities to oil which were in close agreement. The Hassler method gave relative permeabilities to oil which were consistently lower than the results obtained by the other methods. INTRODUCTION The relationship between the effective permeability of a reservoir rock to each of the fluids flowing through it and the corresponding fluid saturation is an important characteristic of the reservoir rock. Knowledge of this characteristic is and gas reservoirs and of the ultimate recovery to be expected extremely important in the prediction of the behavior of oil under various operating conditions. These effective permeabilities are usually expressed as the "relative permeability" to a fluid phase, defined as the ratio of the effective permeability to the permeability of the rock to a single phase at 100 per cent saturation. Relative permeability-saturation relations are not the same for all kinds of reservoir rock, but may vary from formation to formation, and within the different portions of a heterogeneous formation. In studying the performance of a specific reservoir, it is necessary, then, that the relative permeability characteristics of the individual portions of the reservoir be measured. These measurements may be made in the laboratory on small core samples from the reservoir. Various techniques have been proposed for the measurement in the laboratory of relative permeability-saturation relations. In varying degree, difficulties attend the use of all of the methods which have been proposed. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the factors which influence the measurement of relative permeability, the difficulties encountered in several methods, and to present comparative results obtained by the use of various techniques. FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCE THE MEASUREMENT OF RELATIVE PERMEABILITY It is necessary that the relative permeability data measured in the laboratory yield the same relative permeability-saturation relationships that would govern the flow of fluids through the sample if it were to occupy its original position in the reservoir. Since the core sample upon which the laboratory measurements are made is not surrounded by similar core material as it was in the reservoir, an error in measuring the relative permeabilities may arise from the "boundary effect" which results from a discontinuity in capillary properties of the system at the effluent end of the core.
