HE electrolytic zinc plant of the American Zinc Co. of Illinois, at Monsanto, was expanded in 1943 to a capacity of 100 tons of slab zinc daily. This capacity was not attained because of inability of the leaching plant to deliver an adequate amount of solution for electrolysis. Changing the leaching method so that the acid was added to the roasted zinc material reversed the usual procedure and made it possible to attain the desired capacity. The conditions which prevented satisfactory work before this change and the difficulties which arose in reversing the usual leaching procedure are described. The "reverse" leach operation as now practiced is carried out as follows: All the calcine to be leached is fed continuously to a slurry mixing tank. About one third of the acid to be used is fed to the tank with the calcine. The slurry is discharged continuously to a Dorr duplex classifier in closed circuit with a Hardinge mill. The classifier overflow is pumped to any of six leaching tanks where the leach is completed. A finished leach is discharged through Allen-Sherman-Hoff pumps to Dorr thickeners, from which the overflow goes to the zinc dust purification and the underflow to vacuum filters. This change in leaching procedure from the usual one of adding calcine to a large amount of acid made it possible to provide an adequate amount of purified solution to the electrolyzing division and at the same time filter and dry all the residue produced. Operating savings in reagents and better metallurgical recoveries were also important benefits. The original flowsheet of the leaching plant provided leaching, sedimentation of the insoluble residue, and purification of the neutral zinc sulphate solution with zinc dust. The thickened residue was filtered and washed. The purification cake of excess zinc dust, precipitated copper and cadmium, and any insoluble residue was filtered off on plate-and-frame duplex classifier. Settlement in the thickeners was inadequate and the suspended solids in the thickener overflow gave rise to filtration difficulties after the zinc dust purification. Further, the filtration and washing of the leach residue was poor, and it became necessary to pump a large amount of unwashed or poorly washed residue to storage ponds outside the plant building. Two causes of the poor settling and filtration were determined: Soluble silica and ferrous iron in the calcine treated. The latter was a result of poor roasting and with more experience ceased to be a major problem. The silica was a normal constituent of the feed and the working out of the problem became a matter of controlling its solubility. The obvious method to render the silica insoluble was by intensive roasting. This, however, met with total failure as such roasting resulted in silicates, probably zinc, soluble in the 13 pct acid used for leaching. Attempts were made to coagulate the fine gelatinous slime with addition agents. Glue, lime, starch, beef-blood serum and others were tried without success. All the suggested tried-and-tested means of operating the thickeners gave no consistently good results. Variations in leaching time, in addition of calcine to the leaching tanks, "conditioning" of the pulp by prolonged agitation, immediate discharge of the leach upon completion to avoid breaking up flocs were all tried and given up as ineffective. Byron Marquis, of Singmaster and Breyer, worked with the plant staff on a beaker scale until a leaching procedure was developed which gave consistent results and a promise of overcoming the difficulties which had plagued the plant operation. It was suggested that the difference in solubility of silicates and zinc oxide in sulphuric acid could be made use of in a leaching method where the acidity was controlled carefully. Such control is possible when acid is added to a slurry of calcine. This process reverses the normal procedure of adding calcine to a vessel of acid, hence the term "reverse leach" was applied. In this way, the overall acid concentration can be kept very low. In the tests made, it did not exceed 0.05 g per liter free sulphuric acid. Numerous advantages were realized when no silicates were taken into solution and later precipitated as a bulky gel. The gel had made reasonable thickening and filtration of the leach pulp and practical drying of the residue impossible. When the gel was eliminated, thickening rates were increased as much as five times. The volume of residue after thickening represented about 10 pct of the total leach pulp and had been as high as 95 pct when the gel was present. The thickened pulp was filterable and the filtered cake was dried readily after washing. The zinc extraction from the calcine was slightly lower. This was more than compensated for by the increase in zinc recovered in solution from zinc which had been trapped in the gelatinous residue. The amount of copper recovered was lower. However, the amounts of other impurities, such as arsenic, antimony, and germanium, taken into solution were lower. This was particularly true of antimony. Since the inception of reverse leaching, no concentrates have failed to yield solutions free of antimony even when present in the calcine to the extent of 0.2 to 0.3 pct. Oxidation of ferrous iron is a problem of reverse leaching. Ferrous hydrate does not precipitate at pH 5.3 to 5.4 where a leach is finished. The usual oxida-

In recent years, increased attention is being paid to the application of oil-agglomeration technique for (a) improved recovery of low- ash clean coal, (b) effective beneficiation of low-grade coking coals and (c) removal of pyrite sulphur from high-sulphur coals. In this technique, which has been proved to be more effective than convention- al froth-flotation, advantage is taken of the oleo-philic nature of finely ground coal to separate it under controlled conditions from the associated minerals which are hydrophilic in nature. Unlike froth- flotation, no aeration is needed in the process and the concentrates which are obtained in the form of agglomerates or micro-pellets have easier dewatering characteristics. Optimization of operating variables in treating individual raw feed is a pre-requisite for the successful application of this process. A 10 gram batch unit was employed in the present test series. This paper presents - results from these investigations on such operating variables as (i) size of coal, (ii) amount of oil used, (iii) time of stirring, (iv) rate of stirring, (v) solid content in slurry and (vi) effect of conditioning.

Mississippi Valley-type ore deposits contain significant quantities of minor elements, which are present partly in the form of separate mineral phases and partly in solid solution in the major sulfide phases for which these deposits are exploited. These elements, as separate phases, are: copper, mainly in chalcopyrite and enargite; cobalt and nickel, chiefly in thiospinels and bravoite; rare earth elements associated with certain fluorites; and native gold. Many economically important minor elements occur in solid solution in sphalerite, including silver, cadmium, iron, germanium, gallium, indium, thallium, cobalt, nickel, and mercury. Significant amounts of silver and antimony, and perhaps very small amounts of gold, are present in solid solution in galena. Chalcopyrite may contain small amounts of silver, molybdenum, bismuth, cadmium, cobalt, and nickel. Marcasite and pyrite may contain silver, thallium, cobalt, and nickel. Although some of the minor elements contained in the Mississippi Valley-type deposits are currently recovered at the smelters and refineries, many are lost in tailings, sludges, and slags; consequently, important quantities of these elements are potentially recoverable as non-conventional resources.

Northern Venezuela has been divided into three provinces, as follows: The Llanos, the Andean, and the Maracaibo Basin and Falcon. The first and third are large sedimentary basins offering, possibilities for oil accumulations. Oil is known to occur in many formations ranging in age from Cretaceous to Quaternary. The most prolific source of oil is probably the Cretaceous shales and limestones, from which the oil appears to have migrated into overlying porous beds. Faulting or fracturing, folding, and porosity are governing factors in the localization of commercial deposits. THE occurrence of oil seepages in Venezuela has been known since the early days of Spanish occupation. It was not until 1912, however, that any serious exploration work was undertaken. In that year, the Caribbean Petroleum Co., then a subsidiary of the General Asphalt Co., employed a large staff of geologists to make a systematic survey, of large areas in eastern and western Venezuela, selecting the most, desirable localities out of the immense area covered by the Valladares concession. This preliminary work was completed in the fall of 1913, and in February, 1914, the company completed its first commercial well at Mene Grande. Development work has progressed slowly, for various reasons, but petroleum in quantity has been encountered in nine widely separated localities. The Mene Grande field has been put on a producing basis and approximately 4,000,000 bbl. of oil are being shipped annually. Increasing quantities of oil are now being drawn from El Mene and La Rosa. In the light of these developments, the world's need for oil reserves, and the proximity of Venezuela to the United States, American capital is being attracted more and more to Venezuela. Although considerable careful geological work has been done in Venezuela by the various oil companies now operating, most of the data is. buried in the company,, files, and the published literature has been extremely meager. The most valuable contribution to date has been a map and report by Jahn, which, as it was printed in Spanish, is not. generally available to the American oil public.

Ores must be crushed finer and finer to separate minerals from gauge and the fine ore concentrates must be agglomerated so they can be handled for further processing. THE changes induced in metals by subjecting them to heavy particle bombardment have received widespread attention in recent years and results of such investigations have been reviewed by Slater, Dienes, Seitz, Siegel, and Seitz and Koehler.1-5 Of particular significance are the property changes that occur in uranium-base alloys due to neutron bombardment. These changes are generally very severe since fission occurs within the sample, resulting in the formation of heavy, highly energetic fission fragments, as well as additional neutrons born in fission, which serve to intensify the damage generally associated with fast neutron bombardment of nonfissionable metals. A novel process is described for the selective flotation of scheelite from low-grade (- 0.5% W03) tungsten ores having appreciable quantities of calcareous and siliceous gangue minerals. Specifically developed for the Tempiute, Nevada facility of Union Carbide, the process yields tungsten concentrates exceeding 15 percent W03 with at least 85 percent recovery. This condition was not achieved through conventional processes. This process consists of conditioning the ore pulp with judicious amounts of lime, followed by soda ash and sodium silicate as modifiers. The scheelite is then floated using a mixture of oleic and naphthenic acids as collector. Contrary to the common observation as to the deleterious effects of calcium in fatty acid flotation systems, lime addition is found to be beneficial in achieving satisfactory results. The process has also shown excellent results on a Brazilian scheelite ore.

THE Sunrise iron mine of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation is in Platte County, Wyoming, about 110 miles north of Cheyenne. It is served by the company-owned Colorado and Wyoming Railway, which connects with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and the Colorado and Southern railways at Guernsey, Wyoming, a distance of 6 miles from the mine. The original Sunrise claims were staked mainly by United States Army officers and soldiers stationed at old Fort Laramie, because of small showings of copper in the Carboniferous limestones that form a horizontal capping overlying the Huronian iron ore. A small copper smelter was operated for about three years at Fairbanks, now an aban-doned town on the North Platte River. As many of the copper shafts and test pits near the present Sunrise mine were deepened, they pene-trated the capping and encountered iron. ore or gray sericitic schist, and were abandoned. Evidence of an early interest in iron ore was found when the Chicago claim was stripped for mining. A narrow, winding crevice was dis-covered, which led downward 20 ft. through the capping to the underlying soft red hematite, in which a room 10 by 14 by 7 ft. had been excavated. Stone hammers and wedges and a few rusted pieces of iron were found on the floor, and the evidence is conclusive that the excavation was used up to rather recent times by Sioux Indian medicine men, to provide war paint.

Beck (University of Illinois, Urbana, 111.)—An interesting result of this work is the fact that in cold rolled molybdenum sheet complete loss of work hardening is obtainable on annealing, without change in texture. The retainment of the cross-rolling texture on soft-annealing is particularly significant, since this is essentially a single orientation texture, where texture retainment could be achieved by only one of the two niechanisms which produce this effect in aluminum,16 namely by recrystallization in situ. Recrystallization in situ was originally discovered by Collins and Mathewson (1940) and by Crussard (1944) as a phenomenon taking place on annealing in relatively mildly deformed single crystals of aluminum. It now appears to be a major (in many cases the major) mechanism of annealing of severely cold rolled poly-crystalline material, not only in aluminum,le but in metals as different in character as beryllium," tita- nium,'" and molybdenum. All these data now confirm the general validity, at least for more or less pure metals, of the interpretation of the annealing process given a few years ago by Smith.'" The whole question of recrystallization is now reopened. Indeed, it appears that recrystallization, as defined traditionally, may not occur at all, since at the time "deformed material" is absorbed by "recrystallized grains," it has already become completely strain free by recovery and "recrystallization in situ."

Probably the only hotel in the world with near 100% occupancy at all times is the modern Hotel Indonesia in Djakarta. However, there is little gaiety among the scores of business men who occupy the hotel because they fret as days grow into weeks in seemingly interminable negotiations with government officials. As one man put it, "time is a dimension that they [Indonesians] have never grasped." But the visitors still come in droves to investigate business opportunities in this sprawling nation of tropical islands which is, with 120 million people, the fifth largest nation in the world. Approximately $300 million is being spent each year in Indonesia by foreign companies and governments. Aid grants from the latter are derived about one third from the United States, one third from Japan and the remainder from many nations. Djakarta is a far cry from pleasant colonial Batavia, as the city was called under the Dutch. The orderly colony of prewar days was managed as an agricultural and trading dependency of Holland. The Dutch did little about educating the people. The islands were controlled by the Japanese during World War II and afterwards there was a war for independence--which was attained in 1949. In the ensuing years, President Sukarno devastated the economy by squandering money on a gigantic scale. A Communist-attempted coup in 1965 resulted in a military takeover and the extermination of Communists. The new government under Suharto, which took over all power in March 1966, found itself in a situation where bare survival was the first consideration.

[NoTE.—-This paper was presented at the Pittsburgh meeting in a partially completed form, and I fully expected to obtain, before the period of its publication, both the data and the leisure required for its completion. The hygiene of collieries was to have been separately considered, and the sanitary conditions of various metallurgical industries connected with mining were to receive an extended discussion, while at the same time the points treated in the paper as prosented at Pittsburgh were to have more ample illustration from American and European sources. Delay in obtaining expected information, and the continuous pressure of professional work, have prevented hitherto the execution of this plan ; and I can now publish only a portion of what I had designed to contribute to the subject. In the meantime this portion, but slightly changed, has been included as a chapter on the Hygiene of Metal Mines in a work entitled Hygiene and Public Health,, edited by Dr. A. H. Buck, of New York. An excellent chapter on the Hygiene of Coal Mines, contributed to the same work by Mr. Henry C. Sheafer, of Pottsville, affords me an opportunity to supply one of the deficiencies above alluded to. Mr. Shearer's chapter contains much material in the way of explanations not required by professional readers; And be moreover devotes a considerable space to the explosive gases, falls of roof, and other causes of accidents to life or limb—a branch of the subject not belonging strictly to bygiene. I therefore make extracts only from his treatise.—R. W. R ] It is convenient to divide mines, with reference to this subject, into two classes, collieries and metal-mines. Subterranean quarries, rock-salt mines, etc., present no conditions requiring them to be separated from the latter class.

It is gratifying to observe the growing interest in the study of oil-well spacing. It should always be held in mind that the problem of optimum spacing is to obtain the maximum return of capital per acre drained. This naturally evolves.into a mathematical consideration. As mathematics is the basis of all science, an effort should be made to develop formulas which involve data obtainable in the early stages of development. The first information from a discovery well in a new field would be the character of the sand, rate of initial production of oil and gas, viscosity of the oil, rock pressure, etc. Later, from this well, if Herold's theories of hydraulic, volumetric and capillary controls are accepted, could he determined the ultimate production as without interference from drainage by subsequent well completions, and under which control the well is producing. If it should prove to be producing under capillary control, a rough estimate could be made of it's radius of drainage. With but one well, the radius of drainage, or the interference of drainage of individual wells by close spacing, would be estimated by comparison with similar conditions in other fields in which the development has progressed sufficiently to furnish the data. A second well that is spaced sufficiently close so that an interference can he observed after its ultimate production is estimated, will furnish data to develop a desirable spacing of wells which can be inaugurated for that area and which is capable of producing a uniform amount of oil under like conditions. In some fields this area will be extensive, in others each well location will require an individual study. In 1924, Cutlerl developed a scheme whereby he determined by tabulation a spacing of oil wells for the maximum return per acre. After a study of production in a number of fields, he developed the following as a tentative rule: "The ultimate production for wells of equal size in the same pool where there is interference (shown by a difference in the, production decline curves for different spacing) seems approximately to vary directly as the square roots of the areas drained by the wells. The energy which causes oil and gas to flow from a reservoir formation into a well depends upon a differential between the formation pressure and the pressure at the well face. This differential pressure may be the result of any one of at least three forces, or a combination of them. Gas under pressure in an oil-producing formation (part of the gas may be in solution and part in contact with the oil) is the principal source of energy for producing oil in most fields. In some fields, however, hydrostatic pressure due to water in contact with the oil and/or the force of gravity may be important factors in causing oil to flow into a well. Still another force affecting oil movement is suggested by some students of the problem; the force dependent upon the phenomenon of capillarity. Hydrostatic pressure is seldom the only source of energy in an oil sand, but it is commonly an adjunct to the compressed gas in the formation. Where this condition prevails, increased production may be obtained provided the water encroachment is properly controlled. In addition to the water-drive effect, the hydrostatic head may tend to maintain pressure in the formation by progressively reducing the volume of the reservoir as withdrawals to the surface are made through the producing wells. The action of the force of gravity on the oil in a formation is of relatively small importance, from an energy standpoint, until the last stage of the productive life of a well is reached. This force is the only remaining natural source of energy in some of the eastern fields, but in most of the deep wells of the Mid-Continent and California districts the force of gravity can be precluded as a source of energy, because the wells reach their economic limit of production before the force of gravity becomes an important factor in moving oil to the wells. Since the majority of fields produce oil chiefly by reason of the gas pressure in the oil horizons, the following treatment deals mainly with factors that influence gas-energy relationships. Since the foregoing paper (see p. 387) was printed, I have received the decision of Judge William E. Church, of the first District Court of Dakotah, in the case of Michael Duggan et al. v. John H. and Frank J. Dnvey (Silva Terra—Sitting Bull case), published in full in the Black Hills Weekly Pioneer of August 9th, 1584. The journal mentioned gives also several interlocutory decisions rendered in earlier stages of the case; but I shall quote here only so much of the final decision as bears upon the .construction of the Revised Statutes concerning the apex, the end-lines, and the extra-lateral mining right, together with a sufficient statement of the facts of the case to explain the scope of the decision. " This is an action in equity, brought in the first instance to restrain a threatened trespass by the defendants upon certain mining property in the possession of the plaintiffs, known as the ' Silver Terra' claim ; the allegation being that the defendants were about to enter, through underground workings, the ground of the plaintiffs, and remove therefrom valuable bodies of silver ore. " The answer of the defendants, admitting the acts constituting the alleged threatened trespass, further averred that they had, in fact, at the time complained of, reached and passed, in their underground workings, throngh and beyond the vertical side-line of the Silver Terra claim, and therenpon justified the acts complained of, and claimed the right to pursue their workings into and through the Silver Terra ground, by virtue of their alleged proprietorship of a vein, lode, or ledge of rock in place, hearing silver, having its top or apex within the lines of a certain other mining claim called the ' Sitting Bull,' of which they claim to be the owners, which vein, lode, or ledge extended in a continnons body of mineral-bearing rock from such top or apex to the ground in controversy, and constituted the body of ore in dispute; and that it was in the pursuit of this vein, lode, or ledge in its downward course that they had passed beyond the vertical side-lines of the Sitting Bull claim, and for some hundreds of feet beyond, into the ,ground in controversy " Subsequently, a supplemental complaint was filed, setting up the entry into plaintiffs' ground by the defendants, and their claim of right to do so, and asking fnrther relief by a decree restraining the assertion of such claim, and quieting the title of plaintiffs. "The case was tried before the court without a jnry..... " Custer hill, upon which these claims are located, is situated in the village of Galena, in Bare Butte mining district, in this county. Higher coal quality is being recognized in potentially lowering the cost of power as measured at the bus bar. Assessment of potential coal supplies for most power plants is now going beyond buying at the lowest delivered fuel cost. It is now taking into consideration other factors, such as handling, storage, pulverization cost, boiler fouling, post combustion cleanup, and waste disposal costs. New measurements of quality are being considered now by those producing and those consuming the fuel by assessing numerous variables in the total fuel cycle to achieve the lowest possible power costs.

Open-pit mining on the iron range has been in a stage of transition for several years from the standpoint of mechanization. The most radical change in open-pit mining methods was started in open-pit haulage in 1937 with the departure from the then standard system of locomotive and car transportation and the advent of the heavy duty truck as a replacement. The initial use of trucks was followed shortly by the first installation of a conveyor belt for open-pit ore haulage. The growth of the combination of trucks for gathering units delivering to a conveyor system for transportation out of the pit, has been rapid and this transition appears to have reached a peak in 1949 with locomotives and cars now being used in only a few of the largest open pits. One point which must be considered, if we assume that the maximum equipment change- over point has been reached, is that the largest pits have probably passed their peak of production. Future ore replacement must come from smaller pits wherein the truck conveyor system has done an outstanding job.

Although mechanical appliances for the ventilation of mines have been known siuce very early times (one being mentioned in Agricola's De Re Metnllica, 1657), it is only within the last forty years that such appliances have been generally used. A great number of different ventilators have been invented and used, but the varions forms of centrifugal machines having proved their efficiency, have now almost conlpletely replaced all others. Most if not all of the machines in use in this country are of this class, being either open-periphery fans, or closed, with chimney and spiral casing, of a more or less modified Guibal type. The theory of such machines has been demonstrated by Mr. Daniel Murgue in Theories and Practice of Centrifugal Ventilating Machines, translated by A. L. Steavenson. His statement may be condensed thus : Let a = orifice in a thin plate, of such area that its resistance to the passage of a given quantity of air equals the resist ance of the mine. SINCE the operative word in the subject on which I have been asked to speak is "international," I need hardly emphasize before such an audience as this that it is one which calls for some discretion on my part at the present juncture of world affairs, since, in some respects, it may not be devoid of a controversial aspect. For though the war is over, it has left behind it a sorry state of health in the political and economic complex of the world we live in; and however different may be the impact of these factors on each of us, yet none of us can any longer hope to devise a system or policy to escape from much of its controversial heat, or evade the obligation of doing what we can to diminish it. I would like, therefore, to consider with you how one great form of world enterprise whose range is coextensive with material civilization itself-that is, the Petroleum Industry-can make and is competent to make, a contribution to international health; for it is now an agreed commonplace that oil is arterial in the world's system and we need no telling that a healthy body needs healthy blood. Before embarking on my subject, let me assure you that I have no need to be told that this country before all others-and for obvious reasons is the major sounding board of opinion in matters affecting most aspects of the petroleum industry-technical, economic, national and international (but, may I please add parenthetically, not to the exclusion of quite a

Although hydrogen has been intensively studied in its relation to steel quality, the methods of sampling and determinations are still open to question. It is true that various procedures have been proposed but actually there has not been sufficient agreement to establish a common base from which to work. As a result, it is difficult, to say the least, to correlate the reported results of some of the investigators in this field. The present symposium, premised on methods rather than effects, should prove of considerable value. For the purpose of this discussion two methods of sampling and analysis will be considered. First, sampling of molten steel in the ingot mold by use of an evacuated tube and cylinder using conventional methods of analysis for the gases collected; second, analysis by vacuum extraction involving the use of heating equipment and the determination of the amount of hydrogen evolved from solid steel samples by measurement at reduced pressures. Both methods have been used at Duquesne Steel Works and it is believed that either may be used with considerable benefit if the limitations of each method are recognized. Evacuated Tube and Cylinder Sampling devices for gases in molten steel suggested by various investigators range from very cumbersome and complicated devices to the relatively simple evacuated tube and cylinder used by Soler for deter- mining the CO content of the bath. This latter device was adopted (Fig. I) and modified to meet conditions at Duquesne Works. The principal modifications were in placing the cylinder at the side of the tube and the use of a sleeve on the immersion end of the tube. The first modification was made so that the cylinder could be readily detached and taken to the laboratory; the second, because of the difficulty encountered in obtaining an airtight seal after sampling and because of our practice of re-using the tube. Rigid control of the method of sampling and of the handling of the sample according to plan are of primary importance in hydrogen determinations. This applies to both the sampling of molten steel and the determination of the hydrogen content of cold steel samples. Except for a few preliminary samples taken from spoons, all work on molten steels using the evacuated tube was confined to the sampling and analysis of molten steel during the pour. As mentioned, uniformity of sampling was a basic consideration. As a result, every effort was made to follow definite sampling techniques and procedures. These included control of the depth below the surface from which the sample was taken, the timing between the shutoff and taking of the sample, as well as maintenance and care of the equipment. The distance below the surface at which the sample was taken was readily controlled bv means of a crosspiece and centering device attached to the tube. THIS paper covers, besides laboratory work, a study of actual operation at the Washoe Smelter over a considerable period of time, together with the results of a visit to the Midvale plant of the United States Smelting- & Refining Co., near Salt Lake. For the latter privilege, as well as permission to publish the resulting data herein given, I am indebted to George W. Heintz, General Manager of the Midvale plant, and here take pleasure in. expressing my appreciation for the many courtesies extended to me by Mr. Heintz and members of the technical staff at the smelter. Almost all of the world's supply of arsenic is recovered as a by-product in the smelting of other metals. It is seen on the market in various forms, the most common being arsenic trioxide, the ? white arsenic " of commerce, which is sold as a heavy white powder, or in white, glassy, translucent masses. The trioxide is used in the manufacture of pigment, glass, and insecticides. About 50 per cent. of the domestic consumption is supplied by imports.
