In an interesting article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev., W. T. Stuart describes how a difficult water problem, or one phase of it, may be evaluated by means of a small scale test. Test data are plotted by a method rendering, under certain conditions, a straight-line graph that can be projected to show how much the water table will be lowered by pumping at any specified rate for a given time. A formula is then used to determine the size of opening, or extent of workings, necessary to provide sufficient inflow to enable pumping to be maintained at that rate. At first glance this might seem the answer to a miner's prayer, but a word of caution is in order. It may not be the whole answer. Moreover, results obtained by the method described are reliable only for conditions approximating those assumed. Even where conditions do not meet this requirement, however, it may be possible to draw helpful inferences from the results, perhaps enough to facilitate another approach to evaluation of a problem.

The lack of Aryan roots for the names of metals commonly known among the Aryan settlers of Asia Minor, as well as the later colonizers of Europe, indicates that these races were generally ignorant of the use of metals until they came into contact with Semitic peoples. Practically all mining-terms in current use among the earliest Greeks resemble very strongly their distinctly Semitic equivalents, which can be traced all the way in a broad belt beginning in Lower Mesopotamia, and extending westwardly to the Syrian shores of the Mediterranean. The Greek word 'metallon," for instance, used indiscriminately to designate mine or ore, probably came from the earlier Semitic equivalent, " matal." Again, the Greek words " chry-sos " (gold) and " chalkos " (copper) seem to be descended from the Semitic forms " chrouts " and " chalak." It is a natural inference that primitive mining-methods were evolved by the dwellers in the mineralized areas of Asia Minor, from whom later Greek, Roman, and even North European miners obtained their first not.ions of the reduction of metallic ores, by

A method is presented for computing the solubility of nitrogen in molten alloy steels. Examples are given to illustrate the procedure, and comparisons are made between predicted and measured nitrogen solubilities. Experimentation which measures differences in pressure across the interfaces of immiscible fluids in the interstitial spaces of porous media may be termed "capillary pressure experimentation". In the literature of petroleum technology since 1941 there have appeared twelve papers popularizing capillary pressure concepts and developing applications of these concepts for the solution of problems of practical reservoir engineering importance, such as the determination of connate water, fluid distribution. in transition zones, reservoir rock textural properties, and oil recovery from petroleum reservoirs.' Although a review of the literature would be justified at this time in order to reconcile the conflicting viewpoints which are contained in the cited papers, the object of this note will be of more limited scope. It is believed that the recent paper of Muskat alls sufficient attention to many of the uncertainties which arise upon examination of the published literature. such that until satisfactory counter-proposals can be made it will serve our purpose only to mention some other like uncertainties. This will emphasize further the need confronting petroleum technologists to re. consider and reformulate the application possibilities of capillary pressure experimentation. In particular, I sug- gest that we examine the thesis that capillary pressure experimentation as above defined can lead to measurements reflecting the recovery of oil from petroleum reservoirs, as was proposed first" by Amyx and Yuster" and was first reduced to practice by the experimentation of Welge. In fact. I shall deal exclusively with the Welge papers since it is the principle one on this subject which has appeared to date. I shall attempt to show that the possibility of describing oil recovery features in terms of capillary pressure phenomena has not been established entirely. The Welge paper was a pioneering effort to evaluate this recovery application possibility. P. P. Reichertz' comments on the Welge paper state that non-wetting phase discontinuities are developed occasionally in the Welge experiment, and restate Muskat's argument that discontinuous fluid elements (partially saturating the interstices of porous media which are elsewhere saturated with some other immiscible phase or phases) are not subject to the requirements of hydrostatic equilibrium. It is the purpose of my comment to show that it is unnecessary to make Reichertz' postulation regarding non-wetting phase discontinuities (however valid) when it is desired to criticize welge's theoretical treatment of his problem. It can be shown that Welge's method of measuring values for ''capillary pressure" is invalid in many instances of application, such that his reported curves of capillary pressure Versus fluid saturation often have no physical meaning, even throughout the interval of fluid saturation where it might be otherwise suspected that no phase discontinuities occur. By considering established principles of capillary pressure experimentation it can be shown that the pressure difference experimentally observed between wetting and non-wetting fluid Phases which are contained in external reservoirs will reflect on the capillary pressure difference at the interfaces of contact between these phases only when the following conditions are satisfied: (a) There shall be a balance between the opposing forces of gravity and capillarity, as obtains under conditions of hydrostatic equilibrium when the positions of the interfaces of contact become fixed in pore spaces of certain geometry (b) The wetting and non-wetting fluids within the interstitial spaces shall everywhere be continuous with the external wetting phase reservoir and the external non-wetting phase reservoir, respectively. It will become apparent immediately that in any instance when a greater pressure is recorded in the external wetting phase reservoir than in the external non-wetting phase reservoir, one may establish either that static equilibrium has not been attained or that discontinuities in one or more of the fluids have been developed. This is because the pressure otherwiee is always ereatest in the non-wetting phase at each static interstitial interface of contact with the wetting phase. such that the externally measured pressure in the non-wetting phase likewise must be greatest if the above conditions are to be satisfied.

The paper presents a generalized history of the growth and utilization of electronic data processing in a medium- size, mining-oriented company. A brief narrative outlines a corporate wide data gathering system, its hardware and application. Responsibility areas for corporate accounting, operations control, engineering, and research program development are defined. A Synopsis of programs within responsibility areas is presented along with a review of program language requirements for each of these areas. Anticipated additional uses of computers and the programs being developed for these uses are outlined. The scope and growth of an Information Systems Department within Duval Corporation is briefly discussed. Suggestions are presented which should help minimize the problems and avoid some of the pitfalls of program development for those contemplating the initiation or revision of an electronic data processing system. The importance of lucid and comprehensive program documentation is stressed.

WHILE surveying in a small Western mine, the following problem was encountered: Two traverses had to be connected by running a traverse line down the main hoisting shaft, which was the only connection between the two levels. The shaft was inclined at about 80 deg. from the horizontal and measured 8 by 10 ft. The distance between levels was about 110 ft., measured on one side of the shaft. The surveying equipment consisted of a transit, tripod, level rod, 100-ft. chain, and plumb bobs. There were no side or top the- scope attachments with which to take large, vertical angles. Therefore, we were confronted with the problem of taking readings between two points, one of which could not be seen through the instrument when set up under the other point, owing to the obstruction of the horizontal plate, and of measuring the distance between these points with a chain that was too short. The method of a line of plumb bobs down the shaft was impractical because a setup would be needed part way down the shaft, which would call a halt to all hoisting operations for some time. After considerable experimentation the following method was used.

As this plant is the first ever erected in British Columbia for the treatment of tailings by the cyanide process, and as the ores of this, mine are of a character not unusual among gold-ores of this Province, it is probable that a description of the principal features of the plant, and of the methods employcd in its operation, may be interesting. These works were designed after a careful study of the process, in a small experimental plant, for a period of six months. During this period ten percolation-tests on charges of tailings of 1100 lbs. each, eight percolation-tests on similar charges of concentrates, and twenty-six tests 011 concentrates in a revolving barrel, were made, besides laboratory-experiments. The ore consists of a quartz gangue, containing a little lime and variable quantities of the sulphidcs of iron, lead and zinc. The following figures, giving the analyses of the ore before milling, and of the tailings after milling, which constituted the material to be cyanided, are based on the daily samples taken during February and March, 1901.

Electrochemical measurements were made wing chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite electrodes in aqueous solution containing a xanthute collector and ground ore mineral particles. The purpose was to investigate the electrochemical reactivity of ozone with respect to dissolved xanthute, surface adsorbed xanthute, and the sulfide mineral itself. Electro-chemical evidence for the removal of xanthate coatings from chulcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and platinum surfaces by ozone is presented. The oxidizing power of ozone is compared with that of oxygen and other common oxidizing agents to portray the superiority of ozone as an oxidant.

PRESENTATION of the 1922 Washington Award to Capt. Robert W. Hunt, honorary member and twice president of the Institute, was made at the annual dinner of the Western Society of Engineers, in Chicago, on June 18, 1923, in the presence of 250 mem-bers and guests. W. L. Abbott, Chairman of the Award Commission, when delivering the presentation address, said The life of the Govern-ment of this country, as the lives of governments are usually measured, is short, barely 150 years, but meas-ured by what it has accom-plished, this country has reached a venerable age. The first 75 years of our country's existence were necessarily preparatory to the greater developments which came in the second, and that last half of our country's existence is ex-ceeded, by ten years, by the span of life of our honored guest. "Very little iron and steel were produced in this coun-try until after the birth of Robert W. Hunt. And it was not until after 1860, when as a boy of 21 he joined his fortunes with those of the Cambria Iron Works, that the iron and steel business of the country really took root. After a year or two with the Cambria Works, he left a promising position to go into the army, where he served for four years. After the close of the war he returned to the iron works and qualified himself as a metallurgical chemist.

DORSEY HAGER, Tulsa, Okla.-I have been asked why the Dexter region is dry. I would like to know myself. I drilled two dry wells on that same anticline which has production to, the east and west and south and north. That same anticline has seven domes that have been drilled and only three have proven productive out of the seven. In other words, you have one well-defined anticline with seven domes along its length, all mappable, all checked carefully, and only three of those seven have produced. Now why the others did not produce, I do not know. L. L. HUTCHISON, Tulsa, Okla.-There is no appreciable difference in the character or structure of the sands? DORSEY HAGER.-NO, I have never .been able to see any appreciable difference in the sands where we got production and Where we did not get it. I will say that the deepest wells we drilled, in the vicinity of Dexter, had no sands at the point where they got the production farther north. I. N. -KNAPP, Ardmore, Pa.-I first went to the Kansas-Oklahoma field in 1895 and occasionally thereafter until 1899, when I began drilling; for oil. I started close to wells that were producing gas and which, when drilling, lead made good oil showings in a sand above the gas. I thought these showings were good enough evidence of an oil pool for me without looking for any anticline and I made a paying development in what' I was afterward told by geologists was probably a synclinal trough. If I remember correctly Dr. Orton's report on the lola gas pool (about 1898) he distinctly said that he found no evidence of anticlinal structure and concluded from the records of a large number of wells that there, was a terraced structure of the productive gas sands, of which there were no surface indications.

The combination wet and dry coal-cleaning process is not an attempt at a compromise between the wets and the drys nor is its merit confined entirely to the limitation of moisture in the smaller sizes. It is more correctly, and more broadly, an application of the sized-coal cleaning principle adapting itself in an ideal fashion to present day multiple-size preparation practice. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to call attention to the broader significance of the term "combination wet and dry process" and to mention some of the factors that govern its application. In the narrow sense, when considered apart from the sized-coal cleaning principle, the combination process finds its justification chiefly in the ability to limit the moisture in cleaned coal. Larger sizes of coal offer less superficial area compared with their bulk for the attraction of moisture films. They drain more readily in bins or railroad cars, having more interstitial space for the free flow of water. Therefore, they neither attract nor hold objectionable moisture percentages. In fact, there is so keen a demand for certain washed sizes containing some moisture that hygroscopic salts such as calcium chloride are applied to attract and retain it. When coal deliveries are made on a guaranteed moisture percentage the coarser sizes may be washed and mixed back with the fines without adding greatly to the original moisture but the fines must be dry cleaned or dried to control moisture. Thus in all respects moisture in the coarser sizes is less objectionable than in the fines. The implication of this statement, that moisture is always more or less objectionable, is true. It is safe to say that if dry-cleaning apparatus could be perfected to a point at which its technical results, cost and other aspects would be equal to wet washing, water would no longer be used. As it is, we find that good technical results are more difficult to obtain by dry cleaning than by water. Obviously the use of air tables for coarse coal is not ideal, for it involves the attempt to stratify material in a thin bed on a table surface when the load is only one particle deep. Furthermore, the various air cleaning tables on large sizes require a large volume of air for separation, more power to operate, more dust-collecting apparatus and involve more coal breakage.

The American Institute of Mining Engineers, the second of the four great national engineering societies established in the United States, was organized in 15,71. Its membership is composed of men engaged in the different branches of mining, metallurgy, geology, and chemistry. It includes both those who have worked their way up from the ranks and graduates from mining schools and universities, and at all times has counted in its membership leading technical educators. By a letter ballot of the members of the Institute, it was voted, at the annual business meeting of the Institute on February 18, 1919, to change the name of the American Institute of Mining Engineers to the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers. The vote for the amendment to the Constitution making this change was a heavy one for such matters. It is the consensus of opinion that this marks an epoch in the history and usefulness of this Institute, and it is expected that the change will presage a large and healthy growth in metallurgical fields. Many metallurgists who knew nothing about min¬ing were loath to join a society of mining engineers, despite the fact that over 35 per cent. of the papers published in our Transactions during the past five years have dealt with metallurgical subjects.

Sophisticated computer analysis methods such as finite elements, finite differences, and numerical integration have become tools in the mineral processing industry for design of large mill shells. While use of such methods allows the analyst-designer to take new freedom with his designed structure, there are also pitfalls and dangers which must be recognized for the proper use of such sophisticated tools. One of the worst of these is treating any computer answers as "gospel truth." The present paper discusses the knowledge required by the analyst-designer for proper use of computer analysis, as well as explaining to the layman how to identify questionable areas in such structural analyses.

The mine and milling plant of Demonstration Gold Mines, Ltd., is near the city limits of Baguio, Mt. Province, P. I. The mine road connects with the main highway to Manila. The nearest railway point is near sea level, approximately 40 miles distant. The Baguio district is very mountainous and has one of the heaviest rainfalls in the world. It is therefore difficult to maintain roads or to impound tailings and mine dumps. All supplies are trucked into the district direct from Manila or the nearest railway point, which means uncertain deliveries and high freight rates. Installation of equipment is difficult and costly. The average elevation at the mine is 4000 ft. and the climatic conditions are ideal except for a three months rainy season. The company generates its own power for mining and milling operations with three 400-hp. Ruston Diesel engines direct connected to 250-kw. General Electric alternating current generators. Labor conditions have been excellent, although at present social security laws are causing some unrest. Labor receives a higher average wage rate in this district than other labor in the Islands. The company also furnishes free living quarters, hospitalization and workmen's compensation. Taxation has been reasonable up to the present time, but some of the new mining legislation may make it difficult to operate and pay dividends. The future depends largely upon the continuation of $35 gold and the political outcome in the Islands. History The Demonstration ore body was worked by the Igorots for many years, as evidenced by old stopes and fill encountered in present operations. Attention of Americans was first attracted soon after the Spanish-American war. During the building of the Benguet road to Baguio, the engineers and foreman became interested in the geology of the district.

Selenium is found most frequently as an accessory mineral in the ores of lead, copper, and nickel, and is recoverable as a byproduct in the treatment of many of the ores of these metals. The geographic distribution of the selenium industry closely follows that of electrolytic copper, with the United States and Canada producing approximately 75% of the total output of the non-communist world. This situation is problem number one for selenium-its dependence upon the electrolytic refining of copper- for this byproduct source is not sufficiently flexible to permit a normal supply-demand balance. Furthermore, selenium has become a strategic material in short supply. Thus, new sources are being sought by both government and private interests. Although considerable attention has been given to this effort during the last few years, hardly any research has been published concerning the recovery of small amounts of selenium present in low-grade deposits. In such ores the metal occurs as native selenium or as selenides of iron, copper, silver, lead, and bismuth. In recent years, some native selenium (in both the gray and red form) and selenides, especially iron selenide (ferroselite), reportedly have been found in the sandstones of the Morrison formation near Grants. New Mexico. Similar occurrences have been reported in the Hagan coal basin, in Sandoval County, New Mexico. Samples from New Mexico ores have contained from a trace amount to as high as 0.425% Se. Some of the samples from uranium mines in the Grants area represent mixed ore and mill feed fur uranium reduction plants. In such cases, the selenium usually is reported as an impurity and is lost in the tailings. At present, no attempt is made to recover this waste metal.

The National Waste Terminal Storage (NWTS) Program was established in 1976. The objective of this program is to develop the technology and provide the facilities for the safe, environmentally acceptable isolation of civilian- and defense-related, high-level and transuranic nuclear wastes, including spent fuel elements, for which the federal government is responsible. The principal emphasis of this program is on disposal in mined geologic repositories. Technology development in support of the NWST program includes the formulation and management of a strong basic science and engineering program to generate an appropriate data base to aid in understanding of the key geological processes and major engineering structures involved. The current status, problems, and future plans of the technology program will be summarized.
