QUARTZ of a certain kind, is one of our strategic minerals, and Brazil is probably the one important available source. Crystals of quartz of suitable size and perfection for piezoelectrical application are rare; their most outstanding use is in radio work. Clear quartz, or "crystal," free from twinning, cracks, foreign particles of other disturbing lines of growth, and gaseous or liquid inclusions, is cut into plates which provide excellent control of frequency in broadcasting. The squares or rectangles are less than a millimeter in thickness and ordinarily on the order of 1 in. along each side. They are cut at definite angles with respect to the axes of the crystal, and ground with opposite surfaces parallel. Each small slab must be a section of one crystal, uniform throughout in atomic alignment. The thickness of the chip controls the frequency of a broadcast and it is most important to have the plates oriented and ground with utmost precision. Opposite surfaces are parallel to within 0.001 mm. and expansion or contraction due to the temperature is limited to one part in a million.

Inclusions of MnS and Fe3C have been introduced into single crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe to study their effects on recrystallization behavior and textures after cold rolling and annealing. The presence of MnS in (110) [001] and (111)[112] crystals inhibited primary grain growth and promoted secondary recrystallization but did not alter the texture significantly after annealing at 1200°C. The presence of Fe3C in (llO)[OOl] and (100)[001] crystals caused a refinement of the primary re crystallized grain size but did not promote secondary recrystallization. THE texture behavior of single crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe during deformation and recrystallization has been studied by numerous investigators. The early work of Dunn&apos; followed by Decker and Harker2 involved relatively small cold reductions. More detailed studies of Dunn3&apos;4 and of Dunn and Koh5&apos;6 involved a reduction of 70 pct and recrystallization at 980°C for several crystals. Walter and Hibbard7 studied a greater variety of initial orientations and sought to relate the textures to those of polycrystalline material. Attention was focused on the nucleation process during early stages of annealing and on surface energy effects in studies by Walter and Dunn8 and by HU.9&apos;10 One of the most extensive investigations has been reported by T. Taoka, E. Furubayashi, and S. Takeuchi.11 Most of this work has been conducted using relatively pure crystals with minimal amounts of precipi-tate-forming elements such as carbon, oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen. Recently, however, S. Taguchi and A. Sakakura have observed that AIN precipitates can alter the recrystallization textures of rolled (100)[001] crystals.12 The present studies were initiated to determine effects of MnS and Fe3C precipitates on recrystalli-zation and grain growth behavior of rolled single-crystals of 3 pct Si-Fe. Both of these types of inclusions play significant roles in the recrystallization behavior leading to the formation of the (110)[001] or cube-on-edge texture in commercial grain-oriented silicon iron. It is well known that (110)[001] primary grains are formed by recrystallization of (110)[001] or (11 l)[ 112] crystals after cold reduction of about 60 pct or more. Crystals of these orientations, therefore, were selected for study of the effect of MnS in-clusions on grain growth. On the other hand, a major component of the texture of cold-rolled, polycrystal-line 3 pct Si-Fe is the (100)[011] orientation. The function of Fe3,C inclusions is of interest for this orientation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The single crystals used are listed in Table I and were obtained from commercial Si-Fe alloy processed to produce (110)[001] and (100)[001] texture by secondary growth. The cube-on-edge material was 0.59 mm thick. Suitably large (110)[001] crystals 25 mm wide were selected and their orientations were determined using an optical goniometer. Etch pits for texture determination were formed by a ferric sulfate solution. The other crystals used in the study with (100)[001], (100)[011], and (111)[112] orientations were obtained from sheet which contained large grains developed from secondary recrystallization by a surface-energy driving force.13 Most crystals had a (100) plane very nearly parallel to the sheet surface and the rolling direction could be selected readily. The same sheet also contained a few crystals with (111) planes parallel to the sheet surface, these also being a result of growth by surface energy. The crystals selected from the sheet were about 25 mm wide and 0.25 to 0.28 mm thick. As shown in Table 11, the crystals already contained about 0.070 to 0.10 pct Mn. DOWN in Washington an army of individuals constituting the government of a so-called "&apos;democratic" nation is trying to manage the conduct, in its rnultifold phases, of the greatest war in history for the country that is potentially, at least, the strongest in the world and on which, consequently, the major responsibility rests. The enterprise is one of unprecedented magnitude and complexity. That individuals and groups have made and are making serious blunders, both as to the establishment and execution of policy, is to be expected.

Recent economic and environmental setbacks have not slowed Occidental Oil Shale, Inc.&apos;s program aimed at the commercialization of oil shale. In fact, the firm expects to have a 795 MI (500C) bbl) per day production unit working by the end of 1976. The key to Occidental&apos;s ambitious program is an in situ method that extracts the valuable oil by retorting the shale in place. The process will require practically no water and will leave the spent shale in place underground. Additionally, all plant operations are to be located within the mine. These factors thus serve to make the operation attractive from an environmental viewpoint, in contrast to proposed conventional schemes which call for extensive underground mining, crushing and grinding at the surface, and construction of a massive surface retorting facility.

Production of oil in Oklahoma during 1927 amounted to 273,256,900 bbl. (Table l), an increase of nearly 100,000,000 bbl. over the previous year. All of the major fields declined with the exception of those of the Seminole district which produced 136,105,000 bbl., almost one-half of the total production of the state. Because of this large new production, most of the development in the state during the year took place in that district. The Seminole City pool located in T.-9-N., R.-6-E., was the first of these pools to be developed. The Indian Territory Illuminating Oil Co. brought in the first well in this field in March, 1926, for 1100 bbl. This well is located in Sec. 24-T.-9-N., R-6-E., and produced from the Hunton lime reached at depth of 3900 ft. The first Wilcox production was developed by the Independent Oil & Gas Co. and R. S. Garland in Sec. 26, T.-9-N, R-6-E. This well was being drilled for production in the Hunton lime but was dry in this horizon and was deepened to the Wilcox sand in July, 1926, and at the total depth of 4069 ft. developed a maximum production of 8000 bbl. daily. It held up in wonderful manner and was the cause of not only the development of this pool but the prospecting of the whole district for the Wilcox sand. This led to the discovery of the other major pools in that district. Seminole City pool reached a peak production of 264,500 bbl. on February 22, 1927, and slowly declined so that by December it had a daily average of 56,200 bbl. from 321 wells. The second pool in this district to be discovered was the Searight pool which was discovered by F. J. Searight et al. in Sec. 33, T-10, R-6, in April, 1926. The first well was drilled to the Hunton lime encountered at 4115 ft., and came in for 1300 bbl. daily. During August, 1926, the second well was drilled on the same farm through the Hunton lime to the Wilcox sand which was encountered at 4360 ft. It came in for an initial production of 4000 bbl. daily. This started active drilling in this field for the Wilcox sand. The field had a peak production of 40,621 bbl. on June 15, 1927, and declined to a daily average of 22,300 bbl. from 73 wells during December.

A systematic study has been made of the application of the real gas pseudo-pressure m(p) to short-time gas well testing. The m(p) function can be used in real gas flow problems to account for the variation of viscosity and z-factor with pressure. A mathematical model was solved numerically to generate solutions of various real gas flow problems. The effects of turbulence, formation damage and wellbore storage were included in the model. The analysis of simulated well tests showed that the interpretation methods normally used for liquid flow are generally accurate when the m(p) is used. For practical rates without turbulence, the solutions are not rate-sensifive, and the flow capacity.. kh and skin effect can be determined accurately from either a buildup or a drawdown test. However, the kh calculated from a drawdown test can be significantly low when turbulence is present. A case was simulated in which this error wa.s 36 percent. Turbulence does not affect the determination of kh from buildup tests. The proper determination of kh from p and pa buildup and drawdown plots is developed by analyzing their relationship to the m(p) method. A simple equation is given that can be used for long-range gas well performance forecasting. This expression is compared with a method pre-sended by Russell et al." Introduction The formation flow capacity and wellbore damage condition can be determined for liquid-producing tests by means of buildup and drawdown tests. These tests make use of short-time pressure transient data rather than stabilized flow tests that are often used for gas well testing. Tracy&apos; presented a method of gas well testing that was based on ideal gas equations and utilized p2 buildup plots. This method was shown to be good for low pressure wells. MatthewsZ suggested plotting p and using an average slope and average gas properties. This method was more successful on high pressure wells. Al-Hussainy, Ramey and Crawfordh howed that variation in gas properties could be simplified by using the real gas pseu do-pressure m(p). Because the work of Al-Hussainy et al. included only a few actual cases, there was a need to explore the use of the m(p) method for a greater variety of flow conditions. The occurrence of turbulent flow around the wellbore often is an important factor in gas well testing. Swift and Kiel,&apos; and Carter et a1.&apos; treated turbulence in gas well testing, but did not consider the variation of viscosity and z-factor with pressure. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the application of the m(p) method to buildup and drawdown testing. Vhe investigation included the effects of turbulence, formation damage and wellbore storage. Gas Flow Equations To formulate the mathematical model, many of the assumptions usually used in well testing theory are applied. The system has radial geometry with a closed outer boundary and is composed of a horizontal porous formation that has uniform and isotropic rock properties and uniform thickness. Allowance is made, however, for a radial region of reduced permeability near the wellbore. This region represents formation damage. The geometry of the system is shown in Fig. 1. Darcy&apos;s law does not always apply to gas flow. 1. Healthy and active Local Section organizations are vital factors in promoting the vigor and growth of the Institute. 2. Activity on the part of Local Sections should be recognized and stim¬ulated by appropriation of funds from the Institute&apos;s treasury; and these appropriations should be as large as is consistent with the relative needs for other activities. 3. As between different Sections, the amount of such appropriations should be based primarily on the extent of activities as reflected in the number and character of meetings .held and the attendance of the members at such meetings. 4. In making a request for funds for any year, the officers of a Local. Section should submit: (a) a report showing in reasonable detail its income, and expenditures for the preceding calendar year; (b) a statement of the number of. members to whom announcements of each meeting had .been mailed; (c) a record of meetings held, the character of the program, and _ attendance of members at each; and (d) any further facts having a bear¬ing on its financial requirements for the coming year.

It was deemed desirable to obtain an understanding of the vacuum desulfurization process. McKechnie1 has reported that the sulfur content of nickel- and cobalt-base alloys is reduced in vacuo. Keverian and Taylor2 have observed that vacuum melting causes desulfurization of iron-carbon-silicon alloys. Garnyk and samarin3 have desulfurized transformer steel by vacuum treatment. Experiments were conducted in order to investigate the desulfurization of liquid iron under reduced pressures, and to establish the effect of some alloying elements, and various crucible materials. A vacuum-induction furnace of 50-lb capacity was used. The charge was Armco iron. Silicon was added as 90 pct ferrosilicon, carbon as electrode graphite, and aluminum as high-purity aluminum metal. Magnesia and silica crucibles were used, their inside diameters were 5 1/2 and 5 3/8 in., respectively. The temperature was measured with an optical pyrometer and it was held at 1600 1 15°C. Samples were withdrawn with quartz tubes of 6 mm ID, without disturbing the furnace atmosphere. Pressures were measured with an alphatron gage. The experimental results are shown in Fig. 1. They indicate that: 1) Sulfur can be removed from liquid iron alloys by vacuum treatment; 2) The desulfurization is enhanced by the presence of silicon, carbon, and aluminum, all these elements increase the activity of sulfur dissolved in liquid iron;4 3) The pronounced effect of silicon indicates that probably a volatile silicon sulfide is formed, Alcock and Richardson5 have observed a similar phenomenon; 4) The same rate of desulfurization was obtained when the metal was contained in either magnesia or silica crucibles. The sums given in the accompanying table are those actually paid for material and labor up to about August, 1875; but, as some parts of the machinery were not wholly completed at the starting of the works in September, 1875, the statement cannot be taken as an absolutely correct note of the total cost. A complete description, with engravings of the building and machinery, was given in Engineering, April 26th, 1878, in a paper by Messrs. A. L. Holley and Lenox Smith, to which convenient reference may be made. A detailed list of the construction accounts has been given in a paper, by the present writer, in vol. vi, Transactions of the Institute. A summary is given in the table of the items in each class which enter into the total cost, and also a note of the proportion which each of these items forms of the whole. A concise view may thus he obtained of the facts embodied in the statement as a whole, even though it cannot lay claim to completeness in showing the entire or final cost. An urgent suggestion has reached the writer from a distant country that such statements of cost to be really most serviceable should give the details in days of labor, in weight of iron, and in number of brick, and to this an assent is most cordially yielded. It is true, however, that the mere labor of copying arid compiling these details to such a degree of minuteness, would be very great, and, in any event, the probable difference between the plans of an existing establishment and one projected, would be so wide as to render even so complete a statement of cost of little more real service than the approximate notes given herewith.

Monte Carlo methods have been used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms dissolved in tetrahedral sites in bcc lattices. It is assumed that the presence of an interstitial atom "blocks " a certain number of neighboring sites and prevents their occupancy. Sites "blocked" by more than one filled site are allowed for. The computed values of. the mean occupation number (defined as the ratio of the total number of sites blocked to the number of solute atoms are used to calculate the configurational entropies of the solutions. These entropies are compared with those resulting from previous theoretical studies of this problem and also with available experin~ental data for the p Zr-H, Nb-H, V-H, and Ta-H systems. Evidence is also given that the "blocking" explanation of low limiting compositions in these systems, rather than this being due to initial limitations on the number of sites available, is probably correct. THE ideal partial configurational entropy of mixing of an interstitial solute in a metal is given by: where p is the number of interstitial sites per metal atom and Xi is the atomic fraction of the interstitial. For the bcc lattice. which we shall be concerned with in this paper, the interstitial positions are shown in Fig. 1. It can be seen that for the tetrahedral sites, p=6. whereas for the octahedral sites, p = 3. Different emphasis has been placed on the relative importance of energy and entropy effects in determining deviations from ideality in interstitial solid solutions. In some cases the same system, e.g., Fe-C, has been described by the contradictory regular and athermal solution models indicating that the enthalpy and entropy functions, derived from equilibrium data, are frequently not accu.rate enough to differentiate between these treatments. However, for certain metal-hydrogen solutions the equilibrium data is available over sufficiently wide ranges of temperature and composition to permit a reasonably accurate determination of the compositional variation of the heats and entropies. Hoch&apos; has attempted to interpret the results of interstitial solid solutions in terms of a regular solution model. In the case of the Ta-H system where 13 = 6, this model entails fitting the experimental relative partial entropies of solution, asH, to the equation: where ASgs is the relative partial excess entropy of solution of hydrogen. Hoch found that the results of Mallett and Koeh1 could be fitted to this equation with an approximately constant value of AF up to XH = 0.25. However, it is apparent from the solubility isotherms in this system which become asymptotic to the composition TaH that, since (Xh /6 - ~Xh ) becomes infinite only at TaH6, it is necessary that AS<&apos; tends to infinity at TaH. In other words, the low saturation composition of TaH, instead of the anticipated TaH,, eliminates the possibility of applying regular solution theory to such systems. Rather large negative excess configurational entropies must exist at higher hydrogen concentrations in order to explain the lower saturation values. To account for these low limiting compositions and excess entropies two distinctly different approaches have been followed. Rees and many others1-l2 have assumed that not all interstitial sites are crystallographically equivalent with respect to the interstitial addition; that is, in Eq. [I] p is less than the value anticipated from geometrical considerations. To describe, say, a bcc metal-hydrogen system with a limiting composition of MH by this approach one would consider that p = 1 in the first instance instead of p = 6.&apos;j3 In some cases, nonintegral values of B have been taken in order to improve the fit with the experimental data over limited ranges of composition. The other approach which has been used to explain the low saturation compositions is to assume that, although all sites are available for occupancy, strong repulsive interactions exist between the neighboring interstitial atoms, and hence occupancy of any site excludes or blocks a certain number of neighboring sites from being occupied. Earliest treatments of this concept considered the exclusion of an integral number, of nearest-neighbor sites from being occupied at all concentrations. In this case, the partial configurational entropy is given by: These early treatments failed to allow for the overlap of the blocked sites which will arise at all but the very lowest concentrations. More recently attempts have been made to calculate the effect of this decrease in the number of blocked sites on the configurational entropy. Using the quasichemical treatment of interstitial solid solutions as given by Lacher and assuming that an infinite repulsive interaction energy existed between the solute atoms. atom obtained an approximate configurational entropy applicable to the blocking with overlap case:

An Engineers&apos; Symposium was held Wednesday evening, Mar. 26, in the auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building, 29 West. 39th St., under the general auspices of the Local Sections of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society. of Mechanical Engineers, and the Society of Automotive Engineers. It was participated in by members of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Chemical Society, American Electrochemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Society of Heating and Ventilating Engineers, American. Society of Refrigerating Engineers, New York Electrical Society, Brooklyn Engineers&apos; Club, Illuminating Engineering Society, Institute of Radio Engineers, Municipal Engineers of the City of New York, Society de Chemie. Industrielle, Society of Chemical Industry, and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. In opening the meeting the chairman, Gano Dunn,* said: The program calls this an engineers&apos; symposium, which means a putting, together of things, and these things tonight are ideas of fundamental relations to the engineering profession and the engineering societies. Not only engineers, but all men nowadays are examining their views in respect to their relation to what we call Society. My conception of Society is that there is no such thing in the concrete sense of the word. It is an abstraction, and just in proportion as it is a generalization and broader in scope than the particulars from which it is drawn, so is it emptier of content. That does not mean that it is not important, but it does mean that we should be careful and not be led astray into a zeal for doing things for Society that we would not do for our fellow engineers and our brothers. The man who is unwilling to do something for his brother or fellow engineer and yet urges that same thing for Society-is thoroughly inconsistent and, in my opinion, wrong.

AS always when metallurgical operations are conducted within or close to agricultural and stock-raising regions, the question of damage due to fume and smoke presented itself when the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation&apos;s new smelter commenced to operate in La Oroya in 1922, For more than twenty years the Corporation had operated its old plant close to Cerro de Pasco without encountering difficulties from smoke claims, owing to the fact that it was in an open plain where more or less constant air currents carried and dissipated the smoke over large areas, affording ample dilution. But Oroya is in a deep canyon formed by four contributing valleys up and down which the smoke travels for long distances in a more or less concentrated form. Though the altitude of Oroya is more than 12,000 ft., and the surrounding country rises to much greater elevations, nevertheless there exists there a large and important stock-raising industry and also a considerable development in agriculture, consisting of the cultivation of potatoes, barley, etc.

BORN on Sept. 9, 1855, in the city of Spalato, Dalmatia. Austria, Antonio Francisco Luchich was the son of Francis Stephen Luchich, a prosperous shipbuilder and ship-owner of Lesina. His mother, Johanna Giovanizio, was known to the people of Trieste as a woman of unusual learning and piety. After receiving his high school training in Trieste, Antonio Luchich entered the Polytechnic Institute at Gratz in the year 1875, graduating two years later as an engineer. He then entered the Naval Academy of Fiume and Pola as a Midshipman, receiving his commission as a Lieutenant in 1878. In 1879, then 24, Antonio Luchich obtained a leave of absence from the Austrian Navy and came to Saginaw, Mich., to visit an uncle. He remained in this country and on May 4. 1885 at Norfolk, Va.. he became Anthony Francis Lucas. an American citizen.

MARKETWISE the year 1935 was rather a good one for most of the rare and minor metals; as a class they climbed out of the depression much faster than the common metals. The diamond market, too, was better than it had been for years, attributable only in part to investment buying, as there was a genuine pick-up in consumer demand. Wars and rumors of war tended to speed up purchases of certain metals, but consumption for peaceful purposes was the principal factor. Significant was the important role played by new industrial uses. New discoveries during the year were disappointingly few, considering the broad extent of this research frontier. Scientific developments were far from being at a stand-still, of course, but the dominant note was the cashing in on research consummated in former years. With even a moderate upturn in general business a surprising number of laboratory ideas donned overalls and found jobs in industry.
