AT present the manufacture of metallic zinc, or spelter, in Missouri, is carried on only at the establishments located at Carondelet, or South St. Louis. Although the development of the industry has not yet reached that fulness which it has attained elsewhere in the United States, still the commanding advantages of position of these establishments are so evident that the prospective importance and magnitude of spelter manufacture in this State, and especially at this locality, can hardly be doubted. A study of the chemical and technical aspects of the business of these points cannot be without interest to the metallurgist as well as to the capitalist. I have endeavored to investigate, as far as was practicable, within the limits of a paper of this character, some of the problems connected with this industry, at the same time making a few comparisons of the results attained at some of the Carondelet works with those of other establishments with regard to which information could be obtained. In the prosecution of these studies I have been kindly aided by the managers of Carondelet establishments, and by Prof. Charles P. Williams, Director of Rolla School of Mines. To the latter I am especially indebted for assistance in regard to methods of analysis. To all these gentlemen I return my thanks for their valuable aid. Can the mining industry in the United States accept the change and challenge of the "Now Generation" of an entirely new high-performance automated transportation system? Advanced transportation systems for the mining industry can be defined as those which lend themselves to automation and meet definite performance and cost objectives. The term automation shall mean that control of transportation system is accomplished by a closed loop electronic circuit which, when started on command, will continue to cycle as programmed until such time as an intelligent feed-back causes the system to shut down.

The dynamic simulation of a gravity separation vessel (a high throughput classifier) has been developed. The feed slurry was assumed to contain light (oil droplets) and heavy (mineral solids) particulates of various size. The feed slurry was characterized by the particle size distribution of both the light and the heavy particles. The equations describing the slip velocity for each specie and those defining the time variation of each specie concentration were solved implicitly using Runge-Kutta algorithm. The dynamic simulation was capable of predicting the movement of the froth layer and the density variation of the under- flow. Field data are in agreement with the simulation model and it is shown how this model could be used to develop a control strategy.

DURING 1910, crude-oil production in the United States reached a record level averaging about 3.700,000 barrels daily. Export declined sharply while imports increased with the result that large quantities of crude oil were run to storage during the year. Imports consisted largely of residual fuel oil brought in from South America bit because of a shortage of that product in this country and of Mexican crude. The price of petroleum products followed the declining trend of the last three year resulting in serious disparity between crude and product prices. This condition was aggravated in some areas by the increasing production of distillate by recycling operations and by the high tanker rates prevalent in the last two months of the year. As a result two small purchasers found it necessary to reduce crude-oil price in the Corpus Christie area of Texas.

During the year 1934 there were no new or extraordinary developments in the proven fields. With few exceptions all companies operating in these fields continued intensive exploitation programs on their old properties in an attempt to maintain the normal production of former years. In one or two instances these exploitation activities have had such marked success that the total production for 1934 slightly surpassed that of 1933. The most striking increase in production is that shown by the Kilometer 27 pool of the Comodoro Rivadavia field. However, this increase cannot be attributed to intensive drilling, since it is the result of a more uniform daily withdrawal distributed among all the productive wells. The Province of Salta also showed another increase, so that, judging from the statistics of the past three years and in view of proposed exploration projects, the future may reveal some interesting developments in this province. One of the most interesting occurrences in Salta is the discovery, though not yet considered commercial, made at Macueta, near the boundary line between the Argentine and Bolivia. This exploration well was drilled by the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey and is the northernmost exploratory well in the republic. The oil from this well is of the same type and commercial value as that produced in the San Pedro and Lomitas fields. The producing horizon is also the same as that in the other Salta fields; that is, the Paleozoic Permo-Carboniferous.

In situ mining offers a new and proven method of exploiting sedimentary uranium deposits. The feasibility and economic evaluation of exploiting a uranium reserve by either open pit or underground mining should also include a similar study for in situ mining. This report compares the economics of mining several hypothetical uranium deposits at various depths, grades and reserve sizes by open pit and in situ mining. The evaluation process evolved establishing, where possible, common geological and logistical parameters to both methods of mining. The various assumptions that are unique to either open pit or in situ mining were also drafted, where possible, as equal and common functions to be used in each economic evaluation of the reserve models. After the various parameters were defined, they were programmed to an economic analysis of the various hypothetical uranium deposits by the selected mining method. From the vast array of cost evaluations, total capital and operating cost per pound U308 produced, DCF-ROI, and total net profits before State and Federal taxes were selected as the most meaningful results to compare. From the various geologic parameters used, it was determined that the economic viability of a mining venture is most sensitive to a depth-grade thickness ratio. The three selected evaluation products were plotted against the various depth-grade thickness ratios of the hypothetical uranium deposits. The results of the economic cost analyses show in situ mining generally to be a better method to maximize total net profits and to maximize return on investment.

NUMEROUS brands of virgin pig lead are used in the manufacture of lead and lead-alloy cable sheath for commercial cables. In changing from one brand of pig lead to another a readjustment of press operating conditions is nearly always necessary. This is due largely to different flow characteristics, and some brands extrude at a much lower pressure than others; for example, copper-bearing lead requires much more pressure than a low-bismuth lead under the same operating conditions. With the modern type of lead press the extrusion practice in general differs very little. Molten lead at a temperature of 375° to 400° C. (710° to 750° F.) is cast in a water-cooled cylinder and allowed to cool or solidify into a slug for six to nine minutes. . This slug is forced into the die block and around the core tube through which the cable runs. The die block is held at an optimum temperature by means of gas flames, usually 175° to 225° C. (350° to 4.35° F.). Measurements of the tem¬perature of the cable sheath taken at the time of extrusion have covered a range of 190° to 225° C. (375° to 435° F.). According to Tammann, the rate of extrusion for a metal under constant pressure through a simple orifice is almost doubled for each 10° C. rise in temperature. Because of the irregularity of die-block construction, such a great increase is not obtained in lead-cable extrusion practice. To obtain more" definite information about the effect of small per¬centages of metals usually present as impurities in virgin pig lead, a series of compression tests were made covering several different brands of lead and various alloys. Since the usual temperature of the sheath is approxi¬mately 200.° C. as it emerges from the die block, these compression tests were all performed at 200° C. Five different brands of virgin pig lead were selected, as follows: Brand A: A desilverized western lead of very high purity. This lead contains neither copper nor bismuth. Brand B: A bismuth-free southeastern Missouri lead, usually con¬taining 0.05 to 0.08 per cent copper. Brand C: A copper-free mid-western desilverized lead of very good grade, usually containing around 0.06 to 0.10 per cent bismuth.

There is mitigation for the sorrow of friends and the tragedy of sudden death when that death comes at the height of a successful career. It is not everyone's privilege to die, as has been the wish of many, in the harness—toiling, accomplishing, still necessary to the scheme of things. Nor is it everyone's privilege to leave a monument to his work. Dr. Fred Walter McNair died thus—in the midst of his work of educating, leaving along the path down the quarter century of his presidency of the Michigan College of Mines hundreds of men who, having come under his influence, have been successful in life.

ONE of the most important subjects to the blast-furnace engineer is a thorough knowledge of the conditions affecting the temperature in the different portions of the furnace. All efforts to decrease the consumption of fuel and improve the working of the furnace must be based upon it, and I may, therefore, be permitted to place before you the results of my observations, and detail the conclusions to which they have led me. Tracing the thermic conditions from below upwards we have at the bottom of a blast furnace making No. 3 iron a temperature of 2900' F., which increases slightly to a point a little below the tuyeres. In the immediate vicinity of the tuyeres the temperature is somewhat lower, owing to the entering blast; but a short distance above the tuyeres, where all the oxygen of the blast has been converted into carbonic acid, the highest temperature in the furnace must be attained. This carbonic acid is, however, almost as soon as formed, converted by the glowing coal into carbonic oxide, a process which absorb, heat, reduces the temperature, and provides the active agent for the reduction of the iron ores. In its ascent the hot carbonic oxide gradually parts with its heat, first melting the descending iron and earthy materials, which drop down to the hearth of the furnace. The limit of this zone of fusion is rather sharply defined, and the temperature above this zone suddenly decreases. In its further ascent the hot gas drives off the carbonic acid from the limestone, which causes a further absorption of heat, and finally the gas escapes at the top, at a ternperature of about 250' F. if the furnace is working well. The district around Bag bay in Shoal lake, meat of Lake of the Woods, in the Ontario western gold-fields, is attracting considerable attention at the present time as a gold-producer. A large number of gold-bearing veins have been prospected and mined to a considerable extent in the locality. The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. 'An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization.

A description of the geometrical characteristics of spherical reservoir systems, a discussion of unsteady-state flow of such systems and examples of engineering applications are presented as backgmund material. The fundamental differential equation, a description of average spherical permeability and the introduction of the Laplace transformation serve as theoretical foundations. Engineering concepts are investigated to indicate particular solutions of interest, which are analytically obtained with the aid of the Laplace transform. These are numerically evaluated by computer, and presented in tabular form. INTRODUCTION A tractable mathematical analysis of unsteady fluid flow through porous media generally requires incorporation of a geometrical symmetry. The simplest forms include the linear, cylindrical (radial) and spherical. Most analytical endeavors have concentrated on cylindrical symmetry because it occurs more often in petroleum reservoirs. Nevertheless, some reservoir systems do exist that are better approximated by spherical geometry. Review of technical literature revealed but a single reference to unsteady spherical flow in petroleum reservoirs.l The motive and purpose of the present work was to remove this gap in technical information, and to provide the practicing engineer with some useful analytical tools. The mathematical details associated with the particular solutions of interest involved use of the Laplace transformation. Hurst and van Everdingen previously demonstrated the efficacy of this operational technique, and in many respects the present treatment was patterned after their earlier work.2 PRELIMINARY CONSIDERATIONS GEOMETRICAL CHARACTERISTICS Geometrically, a spherical reservoir system is defined at any instant of time by two concentric hemispheres whose physical properties of interest vary only with the radial distance. Every physical property is thus restricted to be a space function of only one variable: the distance along a radius vector emanating from the center. Such a system is composed of an outer region and an inner region, separated by a defined internal boundary. The inner region simply extends inward from this boundary, whereas the outer region extends outward from it to an external boundary. The position of the internal boundary is presumed fixed, so that the size of the inner region remains constant. On the other hand, the position of the external boundary at any given instant of time is determined by the distance into the system that a sensible pressure reaction has occurred, Thus, the external boundary may change position with time. It initially emerges from the inner region and advances outward to its ultimate position. When this ultimate position coincides with a geometric limit, the reservoir system is said to be limited. When it coincides with points subject to pressure gradients furthest removed from the internal boundary, yet short of a geometric limit, the system is said to be unlimited. In this investigation two different boundary conditions are imposed at the ultimate boundaries of limited systems. The first requires that no fluid flow occur across this boundary; the second that the pressure remain fixed at this boundary.3-5 UNSTEADY-STATE FLOW In a strict sense virtually all flow phenomena associated with a reservoir system are unsteady-state. The transient behavior of these phenomena requires accounting, however, only when time must be introduced as an explicit variable. Otherwise, steady-state mechanics may be used. Analytically, steady-state conditions prevail in a reservoir system only over that portion of its history when this relation is satisfied:

WITHIN the last twenty-five or thirty years the actual operations of the great mining industry have passed almost wholly under the charge of men trained in the technical colleges. It follows that the industry is profoundly influenced for good or ill by the character of the training which the college graduate receives, and the relations existing between the industry and the colleges. This fact seems to be generally recognized, as evidenced, for example, by the existence of a Committee on Technical Education created some two or three years ago by the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America. In 1921 this committee rendered a very able and. extremely well poised reports of technical education as applied to the prospective mining engineer. It deserves the attention of every one interested in the effectiveness of engineering training. That the importance of the relation between the mining industry and the engineering colleges is recog-nized is evidenced also by the mass of criticism, usually adverse, which is proffered to and often hurled at the colleges by those in the industry. The man inn the field sometimes goes so far as to say that engineering educa-tion is hopelessly inefficient and its product worthless, while the college worker sometimes complains that the demands of the industrialist are too numerous and conflicting to be met, and adds that they would' best be ignored. Between these extremes, there seems to be a general consensus of opinion that the training of the would-be engineer can be, and. ought to be, made much better than it now is.

The Whale Lode occurs in the main range of the Rocky Mountains, Park County, Colorado Territory, at Hall Valley. It has been opened up and worked to some extent by the Whale Mine, situated some 11,300 feet above the level of the sea. The mine, with 700 feet of the lode on either side of the discovery shaft, is the property of the Hall Valley Silver-Lead Mining and Smelting Company. The adjacent country rock is a compact, fine-grained gneiss; its general strike is about north and south, dipping steeply to the west. In the immediate vicinity of the mine, the strata are very nearly vertical. The gneiss incloses numberless veins of a reddish granite, in which the feldspar largely predominates over the quartz and mica, the latter oftentimes being scarcely perceptible. As a general rule these granitic veins seem to more frequently follow the lines of stratification of the gneiss than otherwise. They are of varying width, some large, some small; the larger are from 5 to 6 feet wide. Gash veins of feldspar and quartz are also of very frequent occurrence. The general trend of the lode is about northeast. and southwest, intersecting the country rock at about an angle of 45 to its stratification. It dips to the northwest at an angle of 65. I am unable to state accurately how far this lode has been traced upon the surface, but it is at least well known to extend entirely through the mountain upon which the mine is situated, and is traceable over the ridge by a hollow extending for some distance along the surface, in which the lode crops out. This hollow in the surface rock has probably been formed through decomposition of the vein matter by atmospherical influences. The width of the crevice is variable, generally between 5 and 10 feet; the pay vein varies from an inch, or less, to 36 inches. The vein is generally accompanied both on foot and hanging walls by a whitish, semi-decomposed fock, composed of quartz and decomposed feldspar, and in some places—where the process of decomposition has not reached as advanced a stage—a lightgreenish or black mica. This rock, therefore, is in places composed of all the constituents of gneiss, and is undoubtedly nothing more or less than the same in a decomposed condition. IT IS doubtful whether anything new can be said upon this subject and, therefore, it is with considerable hesitation that l prepare this paper. On account of my recent connection with the Department of State as its law- officer, perhaps I will be pardoned if I discuss this subject briefly from the point of view of that branch of the Government. , I cannot, of course, speak for that department, since I have-no connection with it at-present, but it may be helpful if I set down certain* of the factors which in my opinion and from my experience have a bearing on this international problem. With oil-burning ships, motor vessels, motor vehicles, airplanes-all consuming, astonishing quantities of petroleum or petroleum products; with the United States having within its borders only 12 per cent. of the petroleum resources of the world, and consuming about 70 per cent. of the world's output; with the more enterprising nations wide awake to the necessity ; of obtaining and preserving as large a share as possible of the oil resources extant ; the 'problem is peculiarly and in a, very practical sense an international one.

It is now three years ago that I wrote a paper on the fire which broke out in October, 1880, at the Chrysolite mine, Leadville, Col orado, of which I was at that time manager. The paper was read by title at the Harrisburg meeting in 1881, and was accompanied by plans and sections fully illustrating it. It was written to invite a general discussion of the course pursued in the management of that fire, since the various fragmentary and sometimes prejudiced or inaccurate newspaper accounts were not suitable to base judg ment on. The paper I offered, gave the facts as they appeared in the contemporaneous record which I had kept. At that time, a dif ference of opinion had arisen with an adjoining mine, as to possible damages entailed through the fire; and a law suit was talked of. In view of these circumstances, the President of the Chrysolite Company advised a temporary withdrawal of my paper. Somewhat later, I withdrew it entirely, because of the unlooked-for delay in * arranging the controversy referred to. It. has now, indeed, been amicably settled; but the lapse of time has deprived the matter of much of its immediate professional interest. To the urgent request of some of the members, that I should, at least, give a description of the fire- and gas-proof bulkheads employed, I yield with some hesitation, since I lay no claim whatsoever to orig inality in these devices, and therefore question the value of such a paper. The fire originated by accident, in the Chrysolite, a mine comprising extensive and more or less irregular workings, containing immense quantities of timbering, but partially packed with waste rock or earth. Knut L. Sandvik (Mining Engineer, Mineral Dressing Laboratory, Technical University of Norway, Trond-heim, Norway) — The discovery that adsorption at solid-liquid interfaces is influenced by adsorption at other interfaces may prove very fruitful in the further development of flotation theory. Having reached the same conclusions as P. Somasundaran in some experiments with amine hydrochlorides, I would like to offer more direct evidence of the interfacial adsorption mechanism based on surface tension measurements and adsorption studies.' This evidence was derived from flotation tests carried out in a Hallimond tube at neutral pH and 60°C.
