THE Washington magnesite deposits, located in the hilly and mountainous northeastern part of Washington, occur as massive lenses in a sedimentary series made up of dolomite, shale, and quartzite, into which basic dikes have intruded. The ore pattern resembles a series of disconnected chain links extending approximately 25 miles in a south-west direction. Magnesite in this district is all crystalline and closely associated with dolomite, talc, serpentine, and basic dike rock. All deposits which have been developed are near the surface so that quarry-bench mining has been possible. For over twenty years hand sorting magnesite ore at the quarry face was standard practice. Ore cars were hand trammed on 30-lb rail systems which led from the face to ore passes or raises for the magnesite ore and to the waste dumps for disposal of the rejected waste material. This system was somewhat modified by the use of Dempster Dumpster trucks. The ore was, however, still sorted by hand from the calcium and silica bearing waste rock. The Pitch mine of Pinnacle Exploration, Inc. is in the Marshall Pass district, thirty miles east of Gunnison, Colorado. This is a new mining district, having come into existence as recently as 1955, when uranium mineralization was discovered rather late in the days of the uranium boom. There have been three other mines in the district, all of them now inactive. Two of these produced a few hundred tons of very high-grade uranium ore, and the third, Pinnacle's Little Indian 36 mine, produced a few thou- sand tons of lower grade ore. Pinnacle was one of the first companies in the district, and was able to acquire a large acreage. The first two years of exploration were essentially wasted in looking for Plateau-type deposits in a mineralized sandstone bed, but this "wasted" work produced two specific items that paid off. One was an ore-grade outcrop that ultimately became the Little Indian 36 mine, and the other was a boulder of very high-grade uranium ore that eventually led to the discovery of the Pitch mine; however, the actual source of the boulder still has not been found.

A general method-of-lines numerical approach for modeling gas driven fractures has been developed and tested. The numerical solutions agree very well with known similarity solutions for laminar and turbulent flow. Acceptable accuracy is obtained with a very few numerical grid points and with modest execution times. The model has also been checked against the results of several field tests, in which air was used to drive axisymmetric fractures into permeable tunnel-bed tuff.

In order to explore the possibility of predicting reservoir performance from laboratory data, behavior of a hypothetical low-permeability reservoir has been estimated by applying data and methods currently available in the literature. A method of calculating decline in productivity index is discussed, and recoveries by internal gas drive, external gas drive and water drive are estimated. Introduction During the life of a producing oil property an operator is faced with many perplexing problems. Any attempt to determine proper well spacing, optimum rate of production, or the desirability of pressure maintenance requires the evaluation not only of a host of economic and practical operating factors but also of the future performance of the reservoir. Although in some cases economic or operating con-siderations may be of primary importance in planning a development or production program, the anticipated effect on ultimate recovery is more likely to be the decisive factor. The soundest basis for evaluating reservoir performance is past experience with oil fields, but pertinent data are difficult to obtain or apply under conditions normally encountered in California fields. Many of these fields are characterized by thick sections of alternating sands and shales complicated by faulting and rapidly changing lithologic conditions. Further compli- cations are introduced by haphazard development and production practices resulting from competitive conditions, changing demand for oil, and insufficient knowledge of structural conditions during early development. Even in the rare cases where development has been systematic and adequate, production policy has usually been controlled by economic and competitive factors rather than a desire to obtain information for use in future operations. In other words, comparable reservoirs in which development and production practices have been systematically varied are seldom found. In the light of these conditions, conclusions based on experiences usually lack the certainty required for decisions involving large sums of money. Some other method of attacking these problems is needed to supplement and orient field experience. Progress in laboratory investigations of the flow of oil, gas, and water through sands has been so rapid in recent years that these data may furnish such a supplementary approach in the near future. In order to explore this possibility the author has attempted to predict the behavior of one type of reservoir by applying published data and methods. Basic Data and Assumptions Calculations outlined in this paper are dependent upon a detailed knowledge of the properties of oil, gas, and water present in the reservoir and the portion of the total pore space originally filled by each. It is also necessary to know how the permeability of the sand to oil, gas, and water varies with the saturations of these fluids 20

To determine the applicubility of stainless steels fov equipment items which would be exposed only to zinc vapor, the corvosion resistance of several stainless steels to zinc vapor was investigated in 500-hr- exposuves at 900° C. Two austenilic stainless steels, Types 304 and 3-17, suffered severe intergranular attack. Loss of nickel from these steels and micro-probe crnalyses indicated the probable formation of low-melting zinc-rich phases. Good vesistance to attack by zinc vapor, as determined by metallo-9-rpaphic excr)rtination and physical testing, Loas exhibited by Type 405 stainless steel, a jevvitic steel. Type 440C stainless steel, a tnartensitic steel, although suffering considevable loss in weight, was not structurally weakened. At Argonne National Laboratory liquid zinc and zinc-rich alloys are being employed as solvent media in pyrometallurgical processes under development for recovering and purifying discharged reactor-fuel materials.' Because of the high solubility of most metals in liquid zinc,' there are few metals which can serve as container materials for liquid zinc at temperatures much above the melting point. The poor corrosion resistance of the common metals and alloys to molten zinc has been discussed by Eldred.3 DeKany, Lavendel, and Burris4 tested some of the less-common alloys of the nonrefractory metals and found that they also have poor resistance to attack by liquid zinc and Zn-Mg solutions. Of the metallic materials, only some of the refractory metals such as tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum and their alloys have shown resistance to attack by liquid zinc.4-7 In the process-development work at Argonne National Laboratory, tantalum and tungsten vessels have been used to hold liquid-zinc alloys. These vessels are housed in stainless-steel equipment, principally to permit maintenance of an inert atmosphere and operation at various pressures. In this experimental work, it has often been observed that Type 304 stainless steel suffers little attack by zinc vapor at temperatures up to about 800 °C. In contrast, severe attack occurs in areas where zinc condenses as a liquid. The extent of attack by zinc vapor on several stainless steels was investigated because there are possible useful applications of stainless steel for equipment items which would be exposed only to attack by zinc vapor. These applications include, for example, housings around processing equipment as indicated above and vapor lines leading from zinc stillpots or retorts to condensers. EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURE The experimental procedure consisted in exposing stainless-steel test coupons to static zinc vapor for 500 hr at a temperature of about 900°C. The apparatus, shown in Fig. 1, consisted of a 12-in.-long closed tantalum tube jacketed in Type 304 stainless steel to prevent oxidation of the tantalum. The paper read by Mr. George J. Snelus, in 1894, before the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain* so fully and ably described the Walrand-Leghisel process that there remains very little to add beyond recording some changes in practice, made since that date, and observed by the writer last summer, at several continental works, and the further fact that the process has now been for some time in successful operation in this country. Briefiy stated, the Walrand-LegBnisel process is an addition to the Bessemer operation, with the object of obtaining quiet and more fluid steel, and consequently sound castings and ingots. This is achieved by adding ferro-silicon at approximately the time of flame-drop in the ordinary Bessemer operation, and making an after-blow. One who has been trained in belief in the law of supply and demand and its effect upon prices finds it difficult to adjust himself to the minute regulations imposed by the New Deal, and also to the bewildering changes of government policy as expressed within a short period of time between the antitrust laws and the N.R.A., and later by the Bituminous Coal Conservation Act of 1935. A survey of the coal industry since the World War, both in this country and Great Britain, however, shows that regulation of some sort is needed if any stabilization is to be achieved and if the wage structure and economic welfare of the many communities dependent solely upon coal are to be maintained. Let us look at what has happened to the industry since 1920, which can be considered as the end of the period affected by the war influence. This discussion will be confined solely to bituminous coal, although many of the general conditions are equally applicable to anthracite, the position of which now is at least as bad as that of the softer variety. Since 1920—to the end of 1934—the production of coal has decreased from 568.7 million to 358.4 million tons, or 37 per cent; the number of mines from 14,766 to 6,258, or 58 per cent; the average annual production per mine has changed from 38,512 to 57,425 tons, or 50 per cent. The number of large mines has increased considerably, and the number of men employed has decreased from 639,547 to 458,011, a reduction of 28 per cent, while the average output per employee has changed from 4.0 to 4.4 tons, or an increase of 10 per cent. The average price per ton of coal at the mine has varied from $3.75 to $1.75. During that time wages decreased largely until 1933 and since that time have increased, until now the rates paid are considerably above those in other occupations, although the actual yearly earnings are low, because of part-time work. From 1920 to the signing of the Jacksonville wage agreement in 1924, about two-thirds of the men were union members and practically all of the nonunion mines were south of the Ohio River; with the fixing of the high wage scale of that agreement, which soon proved to be an uneconomic one, many of the mines found that they could not retain their business, so gradually changed to nonunion. During the last year I had occasion, on behalf of our New York copper works, to send to various chemists samples, intended to he accurate, of material which we were buying and selling, and I was astonished to find what differences were reported. The oil industry can prosper only if crude production is not excessive. This is true for several reasons. In the first place, the marketing branch of the business is so highly competitive that there is little room for profits in it. There are too many service stations, too many middle men or jobbers, too many refiners eager to press their products upon the market. And the battle is between the strong. If any money is being made in oil today it is by small marketers who buy products from the refining companies and sell on guaranteed margins. In the second place, refineries are overbuilt. There is a large surplus refining capacity. If refined stocks were drawn down they could and would be replenished in short time on short notice. This excessive refining capacity is not serious, however, if the supply of crude is limited to trade requirements. True, it may reflect upon the intelligence of the industry, but if there were a shortage of crude for a few years refining capacities would be readjusted. In the meantime no great harm could result from some idle capacity. It requires no computation to see that refiners could not produce surplus stocks of products from a short supply of crude. I have in mind, of course, the increased yields from cracking. Allowance must be made for that. Still, the picture is the same; less crude is required. I think we can have prosperity in the oil business if too much crude is not produced. A proper limit at this point would be felt all the way down the line. It would slow the refiner and slow the marketer inevitably. Once this constant pressure to make more and sell more is off, operations will be normal and there will be some return on investments. Peices in Relation to Production Potential production at this time is very large, and this condition has existed for many months. As a result the price of crude is low. It is below the average cost of production. Nevertheless, if restraints were withdrawn actual production would immediately increase and the situation would become even worse than it is now. THE results of a series of analyses extending over a period of three weeks at the Cedar Point Iron Company's furnace, Port Henry, New York, are given in Tables I and II. This furnace uses a very pure magnetite and Lehigh and Lackawanna anthracite. The flue leading the gas from the "down-comer" to the boilers was tapped by a a inch gas pipe, which carried the gas to the Orsat apparatus. The pressure of the gas not always being sufficient, owing to the small amount made, to force it into the apparatus, I omitted taking samples several days, and with the exception of the last three days of the campaign, made the analyses whenever opportunity offered. I find the Orsat apparatus, as described by Prof. Egleston,* to work very well, with one exception. The CO is not absorbed as readily in the ammonia-copper solution as he states in his description of the apparatus, as many as 50, and sometimes 60, passes being necessary to absorb all the CO. The power of absorbing rapidly increases as the solution is used, and this would indicate that the more oxygen it contains the quicker will it do the work. Probably the addition of a small amount of some oxidizing agent would remedy this. When the furnace was working in its normal condition, I had no occasion for using the filter, the amount of fume being so small as not to cause any inconvenience. The gas burned with the flame peculiar to CO, and contained just enough solid particles to give it a slight reddish tinge. * See Transactions, II, 226; V, 487, 621.

A study of the Chapman zone in the Richfield field, Orange County, California, indicates that the quantity of oil recovered by present methods will be only a small portion of the oil originally in place. Since the volume of residual oil is believed to be of large magnitude, an experimental water-flooding operation has been initiated in order to determine whether water-flooding offers promise as an economical method of recovering some of this residual oil. A single injection well was drilled between old producing wells, and a water-treating plant using alum flocculation and chlorination was designed and built. Water has been injected into the input well for six months at rates in excess of 100 bbl. per day. Production from one of the neighboring wells has increased materially, the oil production having risen from 7 to 30 bbl. and the water From I to 40 bbl. per day. While definite conclusions regarding the economic success of water-flooding in the Chapman zone are not justified at this time, it has been demonstrated that water can be injected into the zone on a sustained basis and that this water will displace appreciable quantities of oil from the sand. Introduction As a result of an investigation of subsurface conditions in the Chapman zone of the Richfield field, it was concluded that ultimate oil recovery from this zone would probably be low and that natural water encroachment was so localized as to be of little importance from a recovery stand- point. Furthermore, it was found that in many portions of the zone the wells were approaching an unprofitable level of production. When these data were presented to the management of the Union Oil Co.; their reaction was that an attempt should be made to develop methods of recovering at least a portion of the large quantity of oil remaining in this zone. After some investigation, it was decided that wafer-flooding offered the most likely means of accomplishing this end, but reservoir conditions in the Chapman zone differ so widely from those encountered in any of the flooding projects described in the literature that it was difficult to evaluate the probability of success. Despite encouraging results from laboratory tests, it was not even certain that water would displace an appreciable volume of oil from the Chapman sand under reservoir conditions. Therefore, it was decided to initiate a small-scale project, for two purposes: first, to determine whether water would displace oil from the Chapmall sand and, second, to obtain information and experience for future operations if water-flooding appeared to be a promising method of secondary recovery. Reservoir Data The Chapman zone is the upper of the two producing zones in the Richfield field, being found at depths from 3000 to 3700 fi.. THE New River coal-field embraces that portion of the Appalachian coal formation which lies on the waters of the New River, principally in Fayette and Raleigh counties, West Virginia, covering a strip of territory about forty miles in length along the line of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad from Quinnimont to Kanawha Falls, where the New River empties into the Kanawha, the railroad following the banks of the river the whole distance. (See map.) Between Kanawha Falls and the Valley of the Ohio lies the great Kanawha region, and these two coal-fields possess a greater variety of coal than can be found in any other portion of the country, enabling them to furnish the best fuels for any of the various demands of manufacture or domestic use, the Kanawha region possessing many varieties of gas, hard splint, and cannel coal, and the New River region bituminous and semi-bituminous, steam and coking coal. The New River, in its westward course towards the Kanawha, has cut its way entirely through the Seral conglomerate or No. XII of the Pennsylvania Reports, the Umbral red shales of No. XI appearing at the foot of the mountains at the eastern end of the region at Quinnimont, one of the upper ledges of the Conglomerate forming the summits; while at the western end, at Kanawha Falls, the top of the Conglomerate is nearly down to the level of the river, a portion of the " Lower Productive Measures" forming the greater portion of the mountains. These mountains rise abruptly from the banks of the river to a height of from 800 to 1200 feet, leaving only here and there narrow strips of bottom land, a few acres in extent; and as the measures consist principally of hard sandstones, shales, and conglomerates lying in a nearly horizontal position, the mountain-sides are very precipitous, with many long and high cliffs, which, with the great height of the mountains, give the country a very rugged appearance. THE insoluble residue method for the examination and correlation of limestones and dolomites, or other sedimentary rocks containing calcium and magnesium carbonates, originated and was developed in the laboratory of the Missouri Geological Survey. The numerous and ever-increasing problems in the field of applied geology, and the need for a tool or aid in the solution of them, led to experimental work with samples collected from deep wells, in the early part of 1924. The success attained, almost at the outset, with this method was so great that the method has now been developed from the state of the experimental to the realm of large-scale, every-day routine. In a previous paper the writer' described the procedure in detail and the characteristics of the residues obtained from certain Paleozoic forma-tions in Missouri. The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the economic application of the insoluble residue method.

PREVIOUS study' of simple impact systems indicated that energy required for fracture and size reduction of brittle materials is greatly dependent on the type of loading that is employed. In this regard it was postulated that fracture and size reduction of a brittle specimen might be accomplished by a high velocity impact at an energy level at which a low velocity impact would leave the specimen relatively undamaged. The finite time required to propagate energy away from the point of loading of an impacted object to other parts of the object and to its supports may permit a concentration of energy at the point of impact if the rate of loading is high. Localizing of energy at the point of impact could quickly initiate fractures that would propagate through the impacted material along with the traveling stress waves. As the cracks form, the initially absorbed strain energy would be released and portions of it travel ahead of the wack tips as stress waves. These secondary stress waves, combined with the initial stress waves derived from the impact, would produce high localized strain conditions in front of the fracture zone. The fracture zone would propagate and the specimen shatter. High rates of loading are brought about by short impact times, in turn obtained by employing high velocity projectiles that are of small mass compared to the impacted object. IN the geophysical exploration program of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. on the Marquette Range of Northern Michigan, the vertical intensity magnetometer has been used to obtain magnetic anomaly maps of large areas. A network of magnetic base stations has been established and the relative vertical intensity at each station measured carefully with respect to a prime base. In the search for the relatively nonmagnetic soft red hematite ore, the magnetic exploration is indirect, involving the study of dikes, faults, contacts, and other structural features. It was found that the magnetometer, adjusted to a scale value of approximately 40 ? per scale division, was satisfactory for this type of exploration, although many magnetic anomalies were encountered that required the use of auxiliary magnets.

The number of large mines has increased considerably, and the number of men employed has decreased from 639,547 to 458,011, a reduction of 28 per cent, while the average output per employee has changed from 4.0 to 4.4 tons, or an increase of 10 per cent. The average price per ton of coal at the mine has varied from $3.75 to $1.75. During that time wages decreased largely until 1933 and since that time have increased, until now the rates paid are- considerably above those in other occupations, although the actual yearly earnings are low, because of part-time work. From 1920 to the signing of the Jacksonville wage agreement in 1924, about two-thirds of the men were union members and practically all of the nonunion mines were south of the Ohio River; with the fixing., of the high wage scale of that agreement, which soon proved to be an uneco-nomic one, many of the mines found that they could not retain their business, so gradually changed to nonunion.
