Experiments have shown12 that the formula -S = St - (St - Se')e ne [1] expresses very well the relation between the true stress S and the true form monotonic deformation of plastic metals in single tension and compression (Fig 1). St (asymptotic or final stress), Se' (threshold stress) and ne (characteristic or specific strain) are constants, the significance of which immediately follows from Fig 1. Only at the initial stages of deformation the experimental curve runs below the theoretical curve. This may be due, at least partly, to the uneven stress distribution caused by the anisotropy of the crystals. It is now obvious that a similar formula H = Ht- (Ht- He)e ne' [2] might be valid for the relation between the hardness and the strain. The hardness can be only a function of the strain and must therefore be independent on the hydrostatic tension present in the neck during straining. Hence, if Eq 2 is correct it will also represent the relation between hardness and strain in the middle section of the neck, the strain of which is generally assumed to be almost or fully homogeneous. For aluminum, copper, and several copper alloys it is indeed observed that Eq 2 agrees very well with the experimental Vickers hardness-strain relation from zero strain on up to the strain at fracture. Moreover nc' is, for several metals fairly equal to nc- Hence H = C1 + C2S [3] C1 and C2 are constants during uniform uniaxial tension. Eq 3 was also obtained for copper by Voce.3 According to Hencky's theory4 the ratio of the Brinell or Vickers hardness and the yieldstress (expressed in kg per mm2) of a non-strainhardening metal is approximately equal to 2.8. If Eq 1, 2 and 3 are correct the ratio Ht/S, must accordingly be the same for all plastic metals and be equal to 2.8. It is now experimentally established that this ratio varies between 2.7 and 3.1 with a mean value of 2.9. Taking into account that Ht and especially St can be obtained only by extrapolation from the range of rather low strains, the agreement with the theory is very satisfactory. References 1. J. H. The Jeffrey operation of Canadian Johns -Manville Co. , Ltd., at Asbestos, Quebec, is considered to be the world's largest asbestos mine. It accounts for approximately 37% of Canadian production of chysotile asbestos and about 13% of world production. Rated capacity is over 600,000 stpy (540,000 mtpy) of fiber, of which well over 90% is exported to the United States and seventy other countries. During the early 1970's the company completed a five-year modernization and expansion program which included the installation of a unique 72 in. by 93 in. gyratory crusher to handle the extremely blocky serpentinized peridotite ore. Because of the large diameter of this crusher the top ring of the shell was made in two halves which were bolted together. Hundred-ton trucks dump from two sides of the crusher into the 200 st (180 mt) dump pocket which is equipped with dust collecting ducts in the walls of the other two sides. The installation was designed to accommodate the eventual use of 200 -ton trucks. Crushed ore at a. size of 7 ½ in. (191 mm) falls into a uniquely designed crushed ore pocket equipped with three sloping steel sides and one vertical side, which make it totally live. Infrared heaters installed in back of the hopper sides prevent the ore from sticking to the steel. Another interesting feature is an eccentric removal bridge which is permanently mounted inside the crushed ore pocket. The two halves of the bridge are let down by electric winches to form a platform on which the eccentric cart travels and from where maintenance is done. Level indications in the crushed ore pocket are by radioactive indicators. Under the crushed ore pocket is a 72 in. by 28 ft (1.83 m by 8.5 m) apron feeder which operates at 7. 2 to 50 fpm (2. 3 to 15. 3 mpm). Crushed ore is discharged to a picking belt for tramp removal. A crossbelt magnetic separator is also mounted over this belt. Permanently mounted belt reels are also situated over the picking belt to facilitate the changing of this unit. A 60 in. (1. 52 m) wide takeaway belt then elevates the crushed ore to t.he surface facilities. Instead of discharging to a crushed ore stockpile, the takeaway conveyor delivers the ore to a 300-ton distribution bin. The ore is then screened and secondary crushed; and the plus ¾ in. (19 m) is "stored in a 3,000 ton bin while the minus ¾ in. is dried and then sent to storage. This system of directly screening primary crushed ore is similar to that used at both the Endako molybdenum and Gibraltar copper operations in British Columbia. The use of electrical well logs for the quantitative determination of such reservoir parameters as connate water saturation, formation permeability and connate water salinity has recently been attracting the attention of a number of workers1,2,3,4,5. While the theory of the determination of connate water salinity from the self potential S.P. log has received rather detailed treatment, relatively little attention has been paid to the theoretical aspects involved in the quantitative interpretation of resistivity data. It is clear that if electrical well logs can be used for the quantitative evaluation of physical characteristics of reservoir rock, they will provide a valuable tool to supplement cheaply information obtained by more laborious core analysis. In certain cases it is conceivable that the coring program could be considerably curtailed if the electric log could be relied upon to give reasonably accurate quantitative information. It is our object in this paper to examine the theoretical basis of quantitative log interpretation as expressed in such well-established logging concepts as formation factor and cementation factor. It is also our object to investigate the physical aspects of the rela- tionship which is presumed to exist between resistivity index and brine saturation in reservoir rock. In particular, we will endeavor to draw attention to the fact that it is possible to express these logging concepts in terms of capillary pressure-saturation relationships, permeability and tortuosity, parameters which we will consider in this paper to be fundamentally indicative of rock texture. The probability of being able to obtain from log recordings alone the data theoretically essential to permit quantitative log interpretatiou will be examined, and consideration will also be given to the problem of formulating simple semi-empirical relationships for use in the field. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The concept of formation resistivity factor, or as it is now commonly called, formation factor, appears to have been introduced by G. E. Archie",". Formation resistivity factor as defined by Archie is the resistivity of a rock 100 per cent brine-saturated divided by the resistivity of the brine. This relationship had previously been used by physical chemists and the concept is, for example, implicit in an early treatment by Fricke7 of the conductivity of aqueous slurries. Archie was able to establish the fact that although the relationship between formation factor and porosity did not change too greatly for different rock textures, the relationship between formation factor and permeability was markedly dependent on rock texture. The relationship found by Archie between formation factor and porosity was expanded by H. Guyod8. Archie had suggested that the formation factor, F, could be expressed in terms of the porosity, F, as follows: F =F-m .... (11 where, F = effective porosity fraction of the sand, and, m = an exponent greater than about 1.3. Guyod introduced the term cementation factor for the exponent, m, since it may be qualitatively shown that formation factor for any given porosity tends to increase as the sand becomes more cemented. It would appear that the concept of m as an exponent representing the cementation in a sand is strictly only of qualitative value, since the quantitative estimation of m by means other than the determination of F and F has not been possible. Guyod suggests that m can be estimated from a visual examination of a sample of rock, but this method appears to be both arbitrary and unreliable. It can be said, however, that in intergranular reservoirs of practical interest, the range of m is from about 1.4 to 3.0. When mining operations of The Eagle-Picher Co. began in the Illinois-Wisconsin zinc mining field in 1949, all underground loading of broken ore and waste was by caterpillar-tracked machines. Beginning in 1956 rubber-tired end-loaders were brought in; ultimately they completely supplanted the tracked units. End-loaders proved to have the mobility needed for the mining conditions and additional merit in auxiliary capacities. Eagle-Picher operates five mines in this area; two are entered by shafts and three by inclined adits. Several ore zones, some of which are attenuated over a considerable distance, are worked from the same entry. Consequently underground haulage roads connecting or following these orebodies have attained great length. In addition, working places are often widely separated because of the character of the mining operations which include pillar recovery and extending haulage connections into old workings. At one mine, the haulage distance is 5000 ft on either side of the shaft, at another the maximum one-way distance is 8400 ft, and at another the present road system of 6800 ft is expected to reach 10,000 to 12,000 ft.

THE present organization of Copper Queen employ-ees, known as the Employees' Conference Com-mittee, is really an outgrowth of the former Grievance Committee, which, in turn, had developed from the original Hospital Committee. The relatively small membership of these older organizations, the practical limitation of their activities to the presenting of grievances, and their lack of initiating powers, were the principal defects which the plan now in operation seeks to overcome. A somewhat parallel scheme was instituted in our Sacramento Hill division about four years ago; this gradually developed into the Ways and Means Committee, which, in addition to providing a forum for the discussion of operating problems, was instrumental in establishing an excellent and mutually satisfactory bonus system. Before recommending adoption of the plan now in force, we made extensive inquiries among those who have had any experience in such matters, and ended by proposing a modification of a scheme developed by John Leitch,1 which was characterized by its similarity to the constitution of the Federal Government. As finally remodeled, the. plan was submitted to vote of the entire working forces at the Copper Queen mines, and was adopted by them in May, 1920. Mining opera-tions since that date have been so interrupted that it is scarcely possible to state exactly what the results have been. The following quotations are from a printed pamphlet containing the constitution of the organization, as finally adopted. The first extract is from a letter addressed by the management to the employees: The plan submitted for your approval and adoption is modeled after the constitution of our own country, under which every individual is given an opportunity for advancement, according to his ability and determination, and every citizen is given a voice in the laws that shall govern him. So it is to encourage the individual employee in advancement, and to give him a voice in making the rules that shall govern his conduct, that we favor the adoption of the proposed constitution.

The Tuscarora mining district, which has been highly productive of gold and silver ores in past years, is situated about 50 miles north- west of Elko, Nevada. The town of Tuscarora lies at an altitude of about 6,000 ft on the west side of the Independence Valley. Precipitation, particularly the winter snowfall, is considerably greater than in many other parts of Nevada, and temperatures are lower. From Tuscarora can be seen-across Independence Valley in the mountains to the east, a distance of about 12 miles, the Freeport Minerals Jerritt Canyon mine, which seems to be-destined to become one of the great gold mines in the western hemisphere. Tuscarora, a gold and silver camp, was active from the early 1870s to 1903 and produced about $10 million in those 30 years. Ten major mines and several smaller ones were operated in an area of about 1.45 square kilometers (one-half squaremile). The deepest shafts were only 230 m (750 ft) but most of the ore came from about the 105 m (350 ft) levels. Mineralization above the water table, at about 30 m (100 ft), was mostly native silver and cerargerite with free gold. Below the water table the ore was rich in sulfides including argentite, stephanite, proustite, pyrargyrite, enargite, arsenopyrite, bornite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite and galena. A number of the properties contain sizeable dumps of what was con- sidered waste rock when it was mined. These dumps aggregate over 408,000 mt (450,000 st) with one dump, the Navajo, containing over one-third of the total. A few grab samples taken in the summer of 1978 from some of the dumps indicated interesting silver values with minor gold content. AgAu Exploration Ltd., was organized to explore and develop these dumps into a heap leaching operation. In the fall of 1978 a campaign was started to lease, with front money payments on a royalty basis, three groups of claims on which were located a few hundred thousand tons of dumps. In September and October of 1978, a systematic program of sampling was started on the Navajo dump which was most favorably situated in that it was near to an area which would furnish good sites for heap leaching pads. At the time it was fully recognized that sampling of dumps was a most difficult problem. Because of the topography on which they were situated and the manner in which they were formed, each dump required its own special sampling technique.

THIS investigation is a part of the United States Bureau of Mines work in conserving the Nation's resources. The isothermal sections presented were developed as a guide to a comprehensive investigation of the properties and fabricating characteristics of copper-base alloys containing manganese and tin. These alloys are being investigated as possible replacements for the commercial bronzes containing substantial quantities of tin. Development of the isothermal sections has, therefore, been limited to the area between 0 to 20 pct Mn and 0 to 25 pct Sn. Since Heusler1 reported the ferromagnetic properties of the Cu-Mn-Sn alloys in 1903, the system has been the subject of several investigations. These studies were largely concerned with correlation of magnetic properties and crystal structure.2-6 Vero,' however, established the solidus surface of the system, between 20 pct Mn and 40 pct Sn, by thermal and microscopic methods. The a, ß, and y solid solutions were also observed by Vero and reported to extend into the interior of the ternary system. For the present study, the annotated diagram of the Cu-Sn system prepared by Raynor' and the Cu-Mn diagram by Dean and coworkers9 were used as the binary borders of the ternary system. Procedure The metals used in this investigation were electrolytic manganese, washed cathode copper, and three-star tin. The manganese, produced at the Boulder City pilot plant of the Bureau of Mines, had a purity of 99.9 pct; the copper contained less than 0.004 pct Bi and 0.001 pct S; the tin contained 0.070 pct Pb, 0.070 pct Sb, 0.050 pct Fe, and 0.065 pct Si. Heats of 1 lb were melted in alundum crucibles with a 3-kw induction furnace. The heats were chill-cast in iron or copper molds to form 6-in. ingots 3/4 in. in diameter. Molds were washed with graphite or zirconia, depending on the manganese content, and preheated to 150°C. The maximum impurity content of any alloy was 0.03 pct Fe, 0.02 pct Si, and 0.02 pct Al; in most cases, they contained less than half this quantity of any of these impurities. Composition of the alloys and their treatment prior to homogenizing are shown in Fig. 1. Designations adjacent to each composition refer to the heat numbers. With a few exceptions, ingots containing 20 pct Sn or less were hot-swaged. These ingots were swaged, after a 24-hr preheat at 650°C, to obtain a total reduction of 70 pct in cross section. Intermittent reheating was necessary, and reductions were limited to either 0.025 or 0.050 in. in diameter per pass. Selection of a 200-hr homogenizing treatment was based on extensive experiments which indicated that virtual equilibrium was reached after 150 hr. Structures were retained by quenching in water. Grain sizes in the specimens homogenized at 350" and 450°C were generally small. These homogenizing treatments were preceded by a 50-hr anneal at 650°C to facilitate phase identification by increasing the grain size in these specimens. The specimens were furnace-cooled from this temperature to the homogenizing temperature, and the heat treatment was continued for the standard 200-hr period. The homogenized samples were bisected to provide an internal section for metallographic examination. Optimum definition of the microstructure was obtained by successive polishing and etching. Quarter-strength ASTM copper reagent No. 13 gave the most satisfactory results.10 Filings from interior sections of the samples were used for diffraction studies. These filings were annealed in evacuated glass tubes at homogenizing temperatures for periods exceeding 50 hr and quenched in water. During this treatment the manganese content was reduced by significant amounts, probably by vaporization. This change in composition was considered in applying the diffraction data, which were used only as a means of identifying phases where the data were consistent with the metallographic evidence. Phase Identification The a solid solution is readily distinguished by the copper-colored, twinned, polyhedral grains, as shown in Fig. 2, and a face-centered cubic X-ray pattern. Tukon indentations, using a 25-g load, indicate a Knoop hardness of 155 for a quenched from 650°C. Using white light developed by a Wratten 78 A filter, the ß grains in etched specimens have a dark brown tint in contrast to the lighter copper-colored grains of the a phase. Knoop hardness values of 284 were obtained for the ß structure in specimens quenched from 650°C. The ß structure was also distinguished from the a phase by its body-centered cubic lattice. The acicular structure appearing in Fig. 3 was evident in several alloys of higher tin content after quenching from either 750' or 650°C. Since a trans-

A sudden change from one constant strain rate to another during a tensile test causes an unusual transient in aluminum alloy 61ST. A sudden change from one constant stress to another during a creep test does not produce an unusual transient in this material. A specially devised test shows that the nature of the previous steady-state conditions, which the sudden change disturbs, is one of the factors affecting the transient behavior. Some of the observations may be explained in terms of strain aging. USUALLY a sudden change during a tensile test from one constant strain rate to another causes a small, abrupt vertical shift from one stress-strain curve to another, parallel one. This behavior is apparently characteristic of all metals at very low temperatures and of many metals for wide ranges of temperature. It is illustrated in Fig. 1 for some early data on 61ST tested at — 195oC, and in Fig. 2 for some recent data on copper at room temperature. The greater accuracy of the results of Fig. 2 over previous ones' is due to the equipment shown in Fig. 3. Three levers apply the bulk of the load, while the changes in the small remainder load are indicated sensitively by a low capacity load scale. Refs. 2 and 3 describe the recording equipment. A test like those in Figs. 1 and 2 provides the information necessary to determine the rate sensitizrity, n,4 of the metal. Normally, the rate sensitivity, n, is positive, which means that an increase in stress causes an increase in rate. However, certain exceptions, attributed to strain aging,5 have been observed. Fig. 2 indicates how rate sensitivity values are derived from the measurements. Table I summarizes the rate sensitivity values derivable from Fig. 1. In contrast to the behavior of copper in Fig. 2, the aluminum alloy 61ST, which strain ages when tested near room temperature, exhibits an unusual transient when the strain rate is suddenly changed,' as shown in Fig. 4. Initially, there is a comparatively sudden vertical shift of the stress-strain curve in a direction corresponding to the rate change, but then the curve gradually shifts back again. The initial shift is not as sudden as might be expected, because the testing machine is unable to achieve the impressed rate change instantaneously, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The behavior shown in Fig. 4 will be referred to as a tensile transient, the word tensile implying that the behavior was observed in a tension type of test. The corresponding test, where the strain rate is maintained constant except for the sudden change, will be called a tensile transient test. A creep transient, by contrast, will be defined as a temporarily abnormal behavior in a creep transient test, where there is a sudden change from one constant load to another.' Does mine-sampling show the commercial value of a coal, and if so, how should it be done? This question is often asked, but seldom answered. During the past summer, while engaged in securing coal for the Government coal-testing plant at St. Louis, I had an excellent opportunity to obtain information on this subject, and the results seem to furnish an answer to the questions propounded above. Sampling for the Geological Survey Coal-Testing Plant. In organizing the work of the testing-plant, it was decided that coal in car-load lots only would be accepted for testing, also that this coal should be loaded under the immediate supervision of a representative of the plant, so as to be certain that the car-load sample would be representative. As an additional check on the work, two mine-samples were to be collected from each mine visited, and these samples, as well as the sam¬ple from the car when it was received at the testing-plant, were to be carefully analyzed at the chemical laboratory, which was established in connection with the plant and operated under the direction of Prof. N. W. Lord, of the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Mine-Sanmhling:-Mine-samples were collected with great care by me and my assistants, Messrs. J. Shober Burrows, John W. Groves and Frank W. De Wolf. The dominant idea in the regulations which were adopted for mine-sampling was that it should be done in such a manner that the sample would have the same composition as the commercial output of the mine. .

Deformation studies were performed on tuffaceous rocks fran Yucca Mountain, Nevada Test Site to determine the strengths and coefficients of friction under confining pressures from 10-50 MPa at room temperature. Frictional strengths of 30ºsawcut samples increased with pressure and reached values of around 150 MPa at the higher confining pressures. However, the failure strengths of the intact samples were quite unpredictable. The coefficients of friction ranged between 0.7 and 0.9 for all specimens. These data can be used in conjunction with in situ stress measurements at Yucca Mountain, to evaluate the potential for earthquake activity in the region.

.I. S. Huckaba (Western Machinery Co., Spokane, Wash.)—It has been my pleasure and privilege to be able to follow this work with the H.M.S. pilot plant very closely. This has been a very thorough and painstaking piece of work and will be of great value to the dense-media operators and manufacturers. Unfortunately time was not available to make an accurate comparison between this pilot plant and the commercial plant at Bellingham Coal Mines, both plants having Wemco drum separators. Briefly I would like to point out what I consider the most interesting finding of this work. Capacity: Very good results were obtained at a feed mte of 5.2 tons per hr in a 30-in diam by 24-in. long drum separator. The maximum capacity of this drum is not known but it is something over 5.2 tons per hr for the available area of 2.08 sq ft. Much has been said and written recently about the manpower problem in the mining industry. The coal segment of the industry has been scrambling to staff and man its companies and operations in order to accommodate the current boom, and there are some interesting side- lights and developments which deserve further attention from coal mining people. This column will deal with the manpower problem in general and the plight of the professional-the mining engineer-in particular. At this point in the game, it is desirable and perhaps necessary to ask ourselves if there really is a manpower problem and, if so, how serious it is. Suprisingly, there are varying and conflicting answers to this question. If we are talking about warm bodies, then in most mining areas there is no problem. If, however, we are talking about skilled or trained people-at all levels-there are apparently serious shortages, especially in the coal industry and in the U. S. Bureau of Mines. To define quantitatively the present and future need for mining professionals is a formidable task, to say the least. Without pretending that these figures are anything but an educated guess, we feel there is an immediate need for about 1000 mining engineers right now and a continuing need for about 300 mining school graduates per year (double last year's number) for the next ten years in order to take up the slack, provide for attrition and maintain a normal growth rate. Mining companies, large and small, are just now beginning to realize that the industry is undergoing a revolution, It is no longer possible to design, build and operate coal mines by the "seat of the pants." Production demands, the new health and safety law and the inevitable new legislation on surface mining will require more engineering, more planning and new technology. There are mine operators who need mining engineers and don't even know that they need them. This could mean rough going for the small operator. It surely means that there will be a trend toward increasing the ratio of technical to nontechnical employees and the ratio of technical employees to dollars of capital towards levels comparable with other highly mechanized industries.

Borates have been mined in the desert areas of California and Nevada for more than 100 years. To about 1890, playa surface mining provided the chief sources of boron minerals. Underground mining of colemanite and later of borax and kernite was predominate until about twenty years ago. Open pit mining of the large deposits of borax and kernite near Boron, California has been most significant for the past twenty years. Mining of colemanite in the Ryan, California area, near Death Valley, began in 1907. Following the discovery of the large deposits in the Boron area (about 1957), mining in the Death Valley area became nearly nonexistent. Only small tonnages were mined for special uses. Little mining was done in the Boraxo area near Ryan. The first claim was made in about 1915. In 1960 the area became the property of the Kern County Land Company, which was acquired by Tenneco Oil Company in 1967. In 1976 the various boiate properties and claims in this region were acquired by American Borate Corporation. The open pit mine is now approximately 122 m (400 ft) deep, 910 m (3000 ft) long and 305 m (1000 ft wide). The borates in the Boraxo pit consist primarily of three minerals. These are about 50% colemanite (CB6011 5H20), about 40% probertite (NaCaB50g 5H20), and 10% ulexite (NaCaBgOg 5H20). The colemanite, along with boric acid and high-grade colemanite ore from Turkey provide the only sodium-free borates for production of textile grade fiberglas. When heated to its decomposition temperature, colemanite decrepitates to a fine powder, which is the basis for the concentration process. The gangue minerals in this deposit are primarily calcite and clays, including bentonite. The ore body has a very low arsenic content, which is a desirable feature. Test work had been done with samples prior to the results discussed herein. This paper will discuss results of test work which were the basis for erection of a plant, and the subsequent plant operations. Laboratory Calcination and Air Tabling Tests Laboratory calcination tests showed that substantial upgrading of the borate could be accomplished by calcining followed by screening of the calcined material. Removal of the + 28 mesh calcine resulted in borate losses of less than 10% with a rejection of 40 weight % or more of the calcine. The minus 65 mesh calcine generally met the requirement of containing 48%, or more, B203. The minus 28 plus 65 mesh material contained an intermediate quantity of borate and would require additional treatment. Testing demonstrated that ore would not have to be reduced to a size finer than 19 mm (3/4 in.) prior to calcination. A temperature range from 400 to 455OC (750 to 850°F) was apparently satisfactory. Calcination at a temperature of 48Z°C (900°F), or higher, was unsatisfactory due to fusion. All laboratory calcination tests were static tests conducted by placing small covered charges in a laboratory furnace for 40 min. In all tests vapor issues from the furnace for 5 to 7 min. Following this period the ore could be heard "popping," due to decrepitation of the colemanite. The reaction generally continued for approximately one-half hour. Various size fractions of the calcination products from laboratory tests were subjected to laboratory air tabling tests, usually after removing the plus 28 mesh material. Laboratory air tabling tests were conducted employing a Whippet V-80 model air table manufactured by Sutton, Steele and Steele Co. now known as Tripple S Dynamics. Variables include both end and side-tilt, speed of vibration, and quantity of air rising through the deck. In addition to the variables in the machine itself, the feed rate is also a rather critical variable. Testing demonstrated that all - 28 mesh size fractions of the calcine could be successfully concentrated to 48% F2O3 or greater. For the finer material recoveries into the concentrate were between 85 and 90% of the borate. With the coarser material a substantial amount of middling was produced which required cleaner tabling. Laboratory calcination and air tabling tests indicated a process whereby the borate could be concentrated to about 50% B203 with borate recoveries approaching 90%. Moreover, the iron content of the concentrate was well below the required specification of 0.3% Fe2O3. Pilot Plant Calcination Following the laboratory test work described above, pilot plant testing was conducted to prove the process, provide data for engineering studies, and provide product for a prospective purchaser. The kiln used was 0.9 m-diam (3 ft) by 9.0 m (30 ft) long and had a belly section 1.2 m-diam (4 ft) by 2.74 m (9 ft) long near the discharge end. The kiln was operated at a speed of 0.7 rpm. Gas was fired into the kiln at an average rate of 27.1 m3/hr (958.4 cu ft per hr). The air to gas ratio used was 10:1. The ore was fed to the kiln countercurrent to the flame and discharged through a hopper into a screw conveyor which discharged to a 1.2 m (48 in.) Sweco separator. The separator had 28, 65, and 150 mesh screen cloths, with the plus 28 mesh fraction being discarded. The minus 28 mesh fractions were later subjected to air tabling. The exit gases, containing some calcine dust, were swept through two cyclones to recover the dust. The gases then were scrubbed in a Ducon scrubber; very little dust reported past the first cyclone. THIS gold problem is full of complications and can hardly be handled adequately or comprehensively in any short period of time. Perhaps I might begin by mentioning a few aspects of the subject about which I suppose there will be no disagreement. The first of these is that we already have a stock of monetary gold in the United States far in excess of what is needed to support any desirable increase in the present volume of currency and credit. The second is that this already superabundant gold stock is certain to be considerably enlarged during the course of the war, and presumably during the months of readjustment following its conclusion. Some billions of additional gold, we may reasonably presume, will come into the country during these next few years, thus increasing the aggregate monetary gold stock from the present eighteen billions to perhaps twenty- two or even twenty-five billion dollars.

The question as to the proper amount of total carbon that the malleable founder would prefer to have in pig iron for use in the production of air-furnace, white iron castings, must be considered from different angles, that is, whether it is desirable or advantageous from an economic standpoint to use some kind of low-carbon scrap on his mixture, or make use of pig and sprue only. Whereas silicon is the acknowledged scrap carrier in the case of cupola gray iron castings, carbon performs this role for the most part in malleable iron practice, irrespective of the character of furnace used for the production of the white iron castings. In this particular, the advantage lies with the maker of gray iron castings in that the silicon content in pig iron through a regulation of furnace temperature is under very easy control by the blast-furnace manager, whereas he has little or no control over the resultant percentage of carbon, as this is dependent on the quantity of coke in the hearth, and hearth temperature, coupled with the amount of hearth slag and its particular composition. As perhaps more than 95 per cent. of white iron castings are made in air furnaces the following statements are intended to cover that situation particularly: In the malleable process the composition of the hard iron castings (that is determined upon as best suited for the work in hand) is the one factor that must control the composition of the mixture to be used; because if the elements are not between certain definite limits individually and collectively the annealed or finished product will be unsoitable, due, perhaps, to lack of sufficient strength or because it is too hard, to machine easily. The annealed product can be divided into two classes, one of which greatly predominates, that is, by far the largest tonnage is used for machine parts where high strength and ductility are essential requisites, while a far smaller amount, light in weight and thin in section, is used for other manufactured products in which castings of any reasonable degree of strength and ductility have proved satisfactory.

The industry of producing and processing boron compounds is called the borax industry because the chief product is borax, the decahydrate of disodium tetraborate. For the same reason, it is common to speak of borax mining. Reference to borate mining also is common, and while appropriate where it emphasizes the diversity of borate minerals that are mined in various countries, it is rather unsatisfactory where used in a general sense, because it seems to exclude the important production of borax from brine at Searles Lake, California, and of boric acid from steam vents in Tuscany, Italy. The terms "boron industry" and "boron mining" might seem more comprehensive, but are little used, and this is fortunate because they would be misleading-the element boron is manufactured only in small amounts for special uses, and it is not found free in nature. In most occurrences, boron is combined with oxygen and is in a borate or borosilicate material. The history of the modem borax industry starts with the introduction into Europe of borax from Tibet in the 13th century, about the time of Marco Polo, if not actually by him. The discovery that borax has unique value as a flux in metal soldering and ceramic glazing must have been made at some unknown time much earlier. As a rule, any mineral that has been used so long that its early history is lost must occur in deposits that are easily recognized and worked, and this is undoubtedly true of borax in Tibet. According to meager accounts,9 the borax occurs there in arid mountain basins as surficial crusts that coat the ground about thermal springs and seeps of mineralized water, and as coarser crystals in the bottom muds of shallow pools and lakes. Much the same essential features of surface exposures and minerals easy to recognize and recover characterize most of the deposits later found and worked elsewhere. The borax industry at the present time is faced with rising demands for its products, and consequently is increasing its productive capacity and appraising its borate resources.18 The areas that contain the known borate deposits are most likely to yield additional production, hence their distribution in the world is of interest, and is summarized later in this chapter. Mineralogy The mineral raw materials used by the borax industry include various borates mined in several countries, borax extracted from brines at Searles Lake in California, and boric acid extracted from the steam of vents in Tuscany in Italy. The hydrated borates[$] of chief commercial importance are listed in Table 1, which also shows their chemical composition. The properties of only the four most important borates are summarized here, but detailed descriptions of the borates and the minerals commonly found with them can be found in mineralogy textbooks.41 Ulexite generally forms clusters of silky fibers rather than large individual crystals.
