THE Hog Mountain mine is a pyritic-gold property in the north central part of Tallapoosa County, Alabama, at an elevation of 800 ft. in the southern Appalachian region. It is 13 miles by a good secondary road from Alexander City, a station on the Central of Georgia Railroad. Since its discovery in 1839, the mine has been worked intermittently. The records of past operations are few and are scattered over a long period of time; however, available information indicates a production of approximately 12,000 oz. of gold prior to the present company's activities, which started in 1933. Additional 7844 oz. has been produced under the direction of the present management. The ore from stopes has averaged 0.200 oz. gold per ton; the ore from development, 0.136 oz. gold per ton. Silver, copper, iron and sulphur are also present but to date are of minor importance. The grade of ore in comparatively narrow veins makes necessary extreme vigilance in the methods of mining. Geology Wall Rock.-Hog Mountain consists of a quartz-diorite intrusion approximately 5000 ft. long by 1200 ft. wide. Its resistance to weathering, as compared to the surrounding schists, has led to the formation of a conspicuous ridge rising 400 ft. above the adjacent country. All the mining operations are confined within the limits of this quartz-diorite formation. . Except where there is excessive shearing, either parallel or at flat angles to the quartz veins, all the walls of the stopes within the limits of the veins are strong enough to make timbering unnecessary. Where shearing exists, there may be a sloughing off of the walls, especially in the process of drawing the ore. When this occurs, stulls are placed in the stope, either while the stope is advancing, or while ore is being drawn from a completed stope. In general, very little timber is required. Veins.-The quartz veins have been deposited along fracture planes in the quartz diorite. There are 20 principal veins, all of which are roughly parallel and strike at right angles to the long axis of the formation.

Density data are reported on 15 saturated hydrocarbon liquids in the range of 35° to 250°F. and 1000 to 8220 lb. per sq. in. The apparent liquid densities of methane and ethane are shown to vary with the density of the system in which they are present. A method is proposed whereby the densities of liquid hydro- carbon mixtures containing both methane and ethane in solution may be computed at elevated temperature and pressures within the accuracy of usual engineering computations. A method of computing the shrinkage of crude oils based upon the gas-oil ratio, gas analysis, and crude gravity is outlined. Introduction The densities of naturally occurring liquid hydrocarbon mixtures are important in many petroleum engineering computations. Calculation of the shrinkage of a subsurface sample of crude oil as the natural gas is evolved is one example of the use of liquid-density data. Sage, Hicks, and Lacey5 have presented a method of computing the density of hydrocarbon liquid mixtures based on partial molal volumes. Discovery is the first step in the location of the claim. The provision of the Revised Statutes (2320) is, " No location of a mining claim shall be made until the discovery of the vein or lode within the limits of the claim located." Strictly speaking, discovery may be defined as the finding of ore or metalliferous rock in place in a well-defined vein. This definition was too strict, so discovery extended later to cover such indications of the pregence of ore, within rock in place, as would justify an experienced miner in spending his time and money with a reasonable expectation of finding ore in paying quantities. According to Colorado statutes a discovery must show a well-defined crevice; in Arizona, a lode, deposit, or mineral in place; in Montana, a well-defined crevice or valuable depositi; in Nevada, a lode or deposit of mineral in place. It is wrong to require a discovery. An honest prospector, wishing to obey the law, finds himself compelled, in most cases, to evade this point. In Clear Creek district, Colorado, a quartz seam will constitute a discovery; in Butte, a red capping; in Leadville or Ely, it is any place where a man can find a piece of vacant ground big enough upon which to sink a . 10-ft. hole. If the vein or deposit outcrops a man can show a discovery, but if it does not outcrop it is foolish to compel him to show one; and this point has been gently side-stepped. Any hole 10 ft. deep now constitutes a discovery. It is no use having laws that the people cannot consistently ob_ey. No sane man will dig unless he expects to find mineral, and he should be protected while digging. He should be required to show that he has mineral ground only when he comes to patent.

The substance known as carbonite, or natural coke, has been several times the subject of comment before the Institute. The most important contribution hitherto made to the discussion is that of Dr. Henry Wurtz, of Hoboken,* who states, upon the strength of a chemical analysis, that carbonite is not a coke, but contains 14.08 per cent. of volatile combustible matter. In 1882 a mine was opened upon a carbonite seam, near Midlothian, Chesterfield County, Va., by Messrs. Jewett & Brother, of that place. The seam, which dips westerly at an angle of about 30 degrees, was struck at the depth of 137 feet with a vertical shaft, and followed on the dip 325 feet, at which depth gangways were opened north and sooth. For these statements (having made no personal examination of the locality), I am indebted to Mr. Albert Blair, of Richmond, and for the following section, to Mr. John Bladon, engineer at the mine. The section was taken in the face of the gangway, February 17th, 1883. It shows an aggregate thickness of 15 feet of "coke," of which about 5 feet were extracted by the system employed last winter. It is reported that under the "coke" seam there is a thick seam of highly bituminous coal, which has been extensively worked on a neighboring property, a little south of the Jewett colliery, the coal being sold for gas-waking. URANIUM is commonly recovered by either column ion exchange (IX) or basket ion exchange (RIP) from solutions resulting from sulfuric acid leaching of uranium-bearing ores. In both operations a solid state ion exchanging resin is used, the major difference being that practically clear uranium pregnant solutions are required for passage through resin columns whereas in RIP, leach slurries from which only the sands have been removed are caused to flow through ion exchanging resins contained in baskets. The solvent extraction process as used for recovering uranium from acid leach solutions is also an ion exchanging process, but one in which the ion exchanging medium is a liquid rather than a solid state resin. For this reason, SX is often referred to as liquid ion exchange, although liquid- liquid extraction is probably more accurate. Uranium in its sulfuric acid leach solutions exists in an equilibrium that may be visualized as follows: [ ] Because of an equilibrium of this nature, uranium may be recovered on either cation exchanging or anion exchanging resins and then concentrated during the resin eluting operation. Similarly, solvent extraction processes may utilize either anion ex- changing or cation exchanging liquid organic phases, which capture the uranium and permit its subsequent concentration when the organic phase is stripped.

SUMPEARY OF CURRENT PRACTICES History The outcrop and surrounding area of Comincots Sullivan Mine was originally mined by small open cuts on surface and small open stopes underground to which shafts and adits were driven for access. When it was established that a commercial grade of ore was available, an adit was driven on the 4600 level (feet above sea level), and OM was extracted by larger scale open stoping leaving supporting pillars where necessary. After the depth of the ore body was proven to the 3900 level and an adit driven at this level, many miles of drifts, crosscuts, raises and sublevels were driven for the extraction of the ore above this level. Larger open stopea were extended from this development. The mining method was, and to a very limited degree still is, a benching method. Due to the strong hanging wall in this area of the mine, stopes with a width of 100 feet or more were opened. In 1931, because the orebody was proven to extend below the 3900 level, a winze was sunk from the 3900 level to the 3350 level. From this winze three intermediate levels were opened. Following a plan of development well in advance of production requirements, further sinking was done by winzes and eventually a large shaft was raised to surface. Prior to 1958 the 2850 level was bottom which since that time has been extended to the 2500 level. Open stopes were developed and mined as this area was opened up.

Roof bolts are the primary means of supplemental support in coal mines and are widely used in other mines. Presently, post installation loads are measured infrequently on only about 10% of the bolts by using standard torque wrenches that limit accuracy to about ± 30%. Because mine roof bolts are long, slender, non-uniformly sized, roughly forged, placed in a difficult environment, and subject to severe bending on installation, researchers have been unable to use ultrasonic reflection techniques to measure strain. A complete measurement system has now been assembled by the US Bureau of Mines, Denver Research Center. Obstacles such as bolt preparation, transducer mounting, reliable reflection, and calibration have been dealt with. The seemingly simple concept of measuring the time of flight of an ultrasonic pulse to a reflector is actually complex due to the need to measure to 0.0025 mm (0.0001 in.) accuracy, the sensitivity of velocity to temperature, and stress, and the stability required to make measurements over several years.

PRIOR to the World War most of the barite used in the United States for manufacturing lithopone and barium chemicals was imported. Germany, by virtue of an abundance of high-grade ore and low labor costs, was in a position to dominate the world market. With the cessa-tion of imports and with the war demand for barium chemicals, the barium chemical industry and the mining of barite became well; estab-lished in the United States. This industry has continued to expand because of the increasing use of lithopone. In 1914 the sales of domestic crude barite was 52,919 tons and in 1934 it was 209,850 tons. Barite deposits of economic importance occur in at least 20 states, but the principal producers in 1934 were Missouri, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia, California and Arizona. The main mining centers are located near the crude barite markets of the three principal marketing districts-the Pacific Coast, the Midwestern area, and the Eastern area. The Pacific Coast is supplied entirely by California, Nevada, and Arizona. The Midwestern area uses most of the Missouri crude and a small amount from the southern states. The eastern market is the chief competitive area. Practically all of the imported crude is marketed there; also the bulk of the southern crude and ground barite. In addition, this area absorbs a small part of the Missouri crude and 80 per cent of the ground barite. Besides the advantage of low delivered costs and purity of product, the imported barite has commanded a price differential because it is soft rather than hard, like many of the domestic ores. The inherent physical properties of the southern ores remain, but the purity can be controlled to a great extent by beneficiation. Simple washing or gravity concentra-tion has sufficed in the past, but in many cases a more efficient process now becomes imperative to remove impurities not amenable to these methods. Certain deposits now being opened are of lower, grade and require more precise milling conditions. In some ores, the kind of impurities has changed as the mining advanced.

Mineral exploration programs have often experienced mismanagement in the decision-making process, and these errors have consequently resulted in stockholder losses. Unfortunately, the events leading to these errors are little known and rarely studied, since managers aren't prone to publicizing their mistakes. However, a bit of magnified hindsight may serve to identify some of the problems. It is interesting to note that there does not seem to be a generally agreed-upon definition of the role and function of exploration management. Several articles have addressed this subject, written by both academic and industry exploration personnel. Two apparent thought trends can be observed: First, the theoreticians insist that modern scientific management principles can be directly applied, without modification, to mineral exploration. However, when one searches for the rules, the proponents rapidly retreat behind the computers and talk learnedly of management information systems and game theory.

JAY A. CARPENTER, Tonopah, Nev: (communication to the Secretary*).-This description of the Santa Gertrudis mill is of great interest to the operators of similar silver mills in Nevada. At the San Francisco meeting last September there were two excellent papers presented on Nevada silver mills; one by A. H. Jones on The Tonopah Plant of the Belmont Milling Co., and the other by E. E. Carpenter on Cyaniding Practice of the Churchill Milling Co., Wonder, Nev. At the same meeting, I presented a paper on-Slime Agitation and Solution Replacement Methods at the West End Mill, Tonopah, Nev., covering this .particular feature of our milling practice. A comparison of the data presented in these four papers is interesting in that, while the general design and practice is much the same in all cases, there is a wide difference in the design and practice in the various departments of 'the mills. It is to be regretted that Mr. Rose did not round out. this excellent article by following Mr. Jones's and Mr. Carpenter's' lead in giving the average gold and silver content of the ore milled and the resulting tailing, with the consumption of chemicals and the? cost of milling. The practice of the Santa Gertrudis mill in the use of ?cyanide and zinc offers an interesting comparison with that of the Nevada mills, and a discussion of this point may bring out the reasons for the differences that exist.

It is often necessary to calculate the size of a hoisting-plant required to raise a given quantity of material, either as a preliminary to the detail design of the machinery, or to decide whether machinery on hand or offered by a manufacturer is adapted to the work to be done. The first element of the problem to be determined is the load to be raised. In a mine that is already developed, this is limited by the size of car that can be hoisted out of the mine and that will pass through the underground gangways. If these place no limits on the design, the size of the load will depend on the output desired per day, and on the number of hoists that call be made per day. The latter are fixed by the time required per hoist and the number of hours available for hoisting, after deducting from the working-day the time required for raising and lowering men, sending down supplies, and for the many small delays in handling cars. It must also be decided whether the hoisting is to be done in one shift or in all of them.

As a result of the 1972 Buffalo Creek disaster, the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), now the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) initiated the draft of new federal regulations to deal with the mine waste impoundment and refuse pile problems. Public hearings were held and finally promulgated in October, 1976. As stated in 30 Code of Federal Regulations 77.214-216, the complete engineering design plan which is mandated by the regulations has to be approved by a coal mine health and safety district manager. During the past 18 months MSHA has gained considerable experience through the submission, review, and approval process. This report indicates the procedures, general design criteria and inspection requirements for submission of engineering plans to be approved. In particular, problem areas encountered most frequently by both operators and MSHA will be discussed. Only through diligent efforts by the operators, consultants and government, can we hope to accomplish the common goal to improve the safety of operations.

There is nothing more important in petroleum engineering than a definite knowledge of the pressure at the bottom of an oil well at any existing operating condition, and the relation of this pressure to the pressure within the producing formation. A knowledge of bottom-hole pressures is fundamental in determining the most efficient methods of recovery and the most efficient lifting procedure, yet there is less information about these pressures than about any other part of the general problem of producing oil. Determination of Bottom-hole Pressures Bottom-hole pressure may be calculated or determined by several methods. On an inactive well it may be calculated from the fluid head or, if the well is shut in, by adding the casinghead pressure, the static head of the gas and the fluid head. In wells flowing naturally through tubing the pressure at the bottom of the tubing may be calculated by adding the pressure at the casinghead between the tubing and the casing and the pressure due to the weight of the column of gas, but there is always possibility of error caused by fluid being in the annular space above the bottom of the tubing. If a well with tubing is flowing through either the annular space or the tubing, sufficient gas may be injected through the static space to insure that it is free of fluid but not sufficient to establish an appreciable friction loss. The pressure at the bottom of the tubing can then be calculated by adding to the pressure at the tubing head the pressure due to the weight of the column of gas. This is probably the most accurate method of calculating bottom-hole pressures. In wells flowing by gas-lift, the pressure at the point the gas enters the flow may be calculated by a gas-flow formula. Several types of pressure bombs have been used to measure the pressure at the bottom of wells. It would be a quite congenial task to attempt to describe all that extraordinary mineral wealth which is now giving such prominence to the region from the James River to the Tennessee line: adjacent to the great lines of the Shenandoah Valley and the Norfolk and Western railways; but such a task would be impossible within the limits of any ordinary paper. Hence, in advance of the fifth edition of my book and map on the Resources of Southwest Virginia, I must restrict myself to a limited but most interesting subdivision of this remarkable mineral belt.
