It is generally realized and very often admitted by both producers and consumers of coal that there is great need for a revision of existing commercial classifications, and this will involve, of course, determination of a standard classification and a constant revision of marketing practices as they are affected by coal classification. I recently sent out some 200 letters to producers and consumers with a request for their views on the subject of commercial classification. Nearly all of the replies from both sides were that there was needed some change in the present method. There were three or four dissenting voices but the great majority of opinion was in favor of the formulation of some standard commercial classification. The classifications in commercial use today can best be described as a hodgepodge. They are made upon different bases, have different names and have different ways. There are, for instance, about 11 single bases of classifications as used commercially and some 17 or 18 combination bases. Then there were the Tidewater Pool Exchanges. The classification which they put in force is still used in the tidewater markets and has several different bases of its own. It will be considerable of an undertaking to bring about a change in marketing methods as affected by coal classification but it is well worth doing and I think the committee which has been appointed under the auspices of the American Society for Testing Materials realizes the importance of the subject and is on the way to at least bring about some provision for adjusting matters. By way of starting, each member of the Committee on Commercial Classification has been assigned to a general market district and each member is now engaged in collecting the commercial market practice data for submission at the next meeting of the Committee. About a year ago I made up a list of the commercial classifications in the different markets and the total was 171. The 11 single bases I found used in commercial practice were:

Mining companies are unique in that they extract mineral resources and must therefore deal with ecological disturbances and other special problems. Like most enterprises, however, their primary motive must be to make money. The problem of mining investment starts with the question of what "make money" means. This article proposes an answer consistent with what economists call the theory of the firm and then applies it to two of the common, and perhaps unrecognized, problems connected with min¬ing investment. In essence, the concepts presented here call for thinking to terms of the income change associated with a given change it outlays or operating procedures To illustrate. ABC Distributing Co. has just discovered the power of advertising. It has raised its annual advertising budget from $25,000 to $50,000, and sales have, zoomed from 250.000 to 350,000 units. The company buy, for 50e per unit and sells at $l. This move has produced $50,000 of operating income for $25.000 in additional advertising expense. This looks great, so the next year the advertising budget goes up to $100,000. Sales go to 440,000 units. With 90,000 more units at 50[c] per unit, ABC sales are up by $45.000. Its advertising costs, however, went up $50,000.

A borehole sonde using a 252Cf neutron source and a Ge(Li) gamma-ray detector was field tested in a coal bed in Belmont County, Ohio, to ascertain whether such a device could be useful as a coal-exploration tool. As the sonde was lowered into the borehole, successive spectra were accumulated over short time intervals. The intensities of the capture gamma rays from hydrogen and of decay gamma rays from aluminum were determined simultaneously in each spectrum. A log of the intensities versus depth shows the depth and thickness of the coal bed. With the sonde stationary at points above, in, and below the coal bed, capture gamma rays were measured to show the variation in concentration of certain elements. From the spectrum recorded in the bed, a complete ultimate analysis, the percent ash content, and the heat content were determined without recourse to an external standard. Delayed gamma-ray analyses of the core were also made on the surface in the vicinity of the borehole in a fixed-geometry irradiation facility wing the detector in the borehole sonde. The concentrations of 10 elements were determined by this method on a coal split from the drill core. These experiments show that it is feasible to use a 252Cf- Ge(Li) borehole sonde as an aid in coal exploration.

THE application of hydrocarbon equilibrium data to various problems encountered in refining and in natural gasoline recovery is an old and well established practice. Both generalized data and data on specific hydro-carbon systems have been made available by a number of investigators. More recently such data have been applied to the relations governing the separation of oil and gas both in the reservoir and at the surface. Most of the applications to production problems, however, have been based upon examinations of surface samples of oil and gas. This paper describes a technique that has been used satisfactorily in a number of cases to calculate directly from the hydrocarbon analysis of and auxiliary laboratory data on a subsurface sample of the reservoir fluid the behavior of the oil and gas during the various stages of separation at the surface incident to production.

The large quantities of iron-bearing materials, including taconite, semi-taconite," and other low-grade ferruginous materials occurring in Minnesota and elsewhere, constitute an important potential source of iron. Satisfactory grade and recovery of iron ore concentrate cannot ordinarily be obtained from these ferruginous materials by simple methods of beneficiation. Iron is distinctive in that the free metal and two of its oxides [magnetite (Fe,O,) and maghemite (gamma-Fe,O,) ] are strongly ferromagnetic. The successful magnetic separation of natural magnetite from taconite has already been established on a commercial scale. The iron in semi-taconite, how- ever, occurs largely as goethite (Fe,Os.H,O) and hematite (Fe90,) which do not respond to ordinary magnetic separation methods. Magnetic roasting converts these iron oxides to magnetite, which can, after liberation, be magnetically concentrated.

By 1968, Cyprus Pima was milling 34.5 kt /d (38,000 tpd) of copper ore using a conventional flowsheet consisting of three stages of crushing, rod milk and ball, mills. A 13.6 kt /d (15,000 tpd) expansion was put onstream late in 1971 using primary crushing, semiautogenous milk, and ball mills. Identical ore is treated in both concentrators. This paper shows the weight and life of each liner for each crusher and each mill over a four year period from 1974-1977. Media consumption is shown for the same period and a comparison is made between the two reduction methods.

Prior to 1939 the bulk of the magnesium metal produced outside of the united Stater was extracted directly from the ore and ifi the United States from magnesium chloride obtained as a by-product from the treatment of natural brines. A typical brine is one containing about 0.25 to 0.75 per cent bromine, 11 to 14 per cent sodium chloride, 9 to 11 per cent calcium chloride and 3 to 10 per cent magnesium chloride. The state of Nevada was known to possess large deposits of magnesite ore (MgCOs, the carbonate of magnesium), in Gabbs Valley, near Luning, approximately 350 miles north of Boulder Dam. Deposits mined in Europe were supplying magnesite giving 97 per cent MgCOs with about I per cent each of silica, lime and oxides of iron and aluminum. parts of the Luning de-posits Were almost equally rich, and the general average was of sufficiently high grade for production of magnesium. power to the amount of 200,000 kw. was available immediately from Boulder Dam, and water from Lake Mead, and it was this combination of available power, water, and ore that led to the initial proposal to erect a magnesium reduction plant in southern Nevada to reduce the magnesite ores from Gabbs. The extraction of magnesium metal from these magnesite deposits had been considered by the I. G. Farbenindustrie of Germany as far back as 1929. Mine and Oxide Plant The mine and oxide plant of Basic Magnesium Incorporated are perched upon the oride slope of the Paradise Range, at an altitude of 5000 ft., overlooking the 30 mile desert panorama of Gabbs Valley, Nevada. , Ore Occurrence The Gabbs magnesite ores occur in a thick series of flat, westerly dipping dolomites of Upper Triassic age. The mag-"esite bodies are exposed in steep canyon "areas encircling the north and east edges of a northerly projecting tongue of a roughly elliptical stock of granodiorite, which intrudes the dolomite. The magnesite mineralization is considered to be a a of calcium by magnesium through the agency of hydro-thermal solutions associated with the intrusion of the granodiorite. The ore bodies are of very irregular shape and distribution. Incomplete evidence points to deep pipelike replacement shapes that mushroom out erratically at various elevations. A wide latitude in the degree of magnesium replacement is reflected in a variance of quality from pure magnesite to magnesitic dolomite. The, ore is a massive crystalline mag-nesite. Though some differences in characteristics occur between ore bodies, in general the ore is a medium-grained carbonate varying in color from white, through all shades of gray, to black. ROUNDING out a year of improved organization, substantial accomplishment and strengthened purpose, the American Engineering Council of the Federated American Engineering Societies held its first annual meeting at the Cosmos Club, Washing-ton, Jan. 5 and 6, Dean Mortimer E. Cooley of the University of Michigan, president of, the Council, presiding. Officers were-chosen, the work of the past year was reviewed and discussed, action was taken on important matters of public and technical service, new financial arrangements were put into effect, committees were named, new policies were sanctioned and old ones reshaped, and a broad and definite program was out-lined for the next twelve months. A leading event of the meeting was a dinner in honor of Herbert Hoover, who, addressing the members of the Council and their guests at the University Club, praised the work of the Committee on Elimination of Waste in Industry as a great and lasting public service, pointed the way for new engineering effort in the public interest, and expressed renewed devotion to the ideals of the Council. Resolutions of appreciation of the service of the Secretary of Commerce were presented to Mr. Hoover.

UNDERGRADUATES in mining engineering may be prepared for work by giving them sound instruction in the courses generally considered essential to the profession. The industry is not deeply concerned about the details of those courses. The average man in the coal industry does not wish to insist upon a rigid program. Therefore, he differs little from those in the teaching profession who evidently are not unanimous in their opinions, or all college catalogs would be alike. For the good of the profession, it is just as well that there should be differences in regard to details. It appears that students graduating in mining engineering from the accredited institutions receive similar instruction. It is taken for granted that the graduate will have a good understanding of English, mathematics, mechanics, electricity, chemistry, physics, geology, and surveying, in addition to his major courses in mining. Somewhat belatedly, industry hopes he will have had at least an introduction to the subject of labor relations, the importance of which is only too clear at present. The coal industry expects, of course, that students in mining engineering will be taught the strictly mining subjects by men who have had practical experience in the mines and who keep themselves well informed in regard to current methods. While the undergraduate is subject to the control of members of the teaching profession, industry expects him to be trained in certain ways that are not a part of his textbooks, but can be made an inseparable part of his development by the skillful supervision of his teachers. Of the desired characteristics, dependability is of the utmost importance. Probably most employers would overlook certain short-comings if the young graduate demonstrated that he was thoroughly dependable. If he always appeared at the right place at the right time with the proper equipment, he would soon be well established as a welcome member of his organization. The graduate who gets a reputation for being undependable will have little opportunity for advancement. Closely allied to dependability is loyalty. Athletic teams and social groups in college tend to develop loyalty which may well be carried over into industry. This does not mean that the graduate has to be satisfied with customary practices. The average manager is glad to see the graduate make constructive criticism as long as he demonstrates his loyalty at the same time. It is important that his loyalty keeps him alert arid ready to take helpful action for the benefit of his organization, and especially to stand with it during times of stress. With or without an introduction to labor relations in college, the graduate is expected to develop ability in this most important field. Beginning with himself, he will find it essential to deal agreeably with his immediate associates. Getting along in friendly fashion with his own small group will be a great help as his responsibilities increase and he is required to deal with larger numbers of persons. On a higher scale, his interest in his community may grow at the same time by voluntary work in any one of a great number of useful activities. Industry expects the graduate engineer to be a mature man at the time he gets his first job. Supposing that he has better than average intelligence, industry expects him to continue to grow intellectually and to fit himself for responsible jobs when they are offered to him. For this reason, employers are apt to look over his college record to see what he did that would indicate his fitness for leadership. There is interest in knowing what he did beyond the requirements. As evidence of his mental growth, it is expected that the graduate will do independent thinking; that he will not take too much for granted. When he reads a report, he should develop the ability to see whether the subject is new or whether it is just a description of an old method that has been superseded by something better. For the same reason, the graduate should be able to accept conditions that have been arrived at by sound experience rather than cling to something else that seems better in theory. In this connection, it may be remarked that the ability to operate successfully a personal budget will be noteworthy, as it may be assumed that a man who knows how to conduct his own affairs will be prepared to assume the larger responsibilities of industry. Membership in AIME will indicate to the employer that the graduate is interested in the mining industry as a whole. Therefore, it is good evidence of something more than a local outlook. Quite apart from college training and mental ability, the newly employed graduate will be expected to be willing to do hard manual labor for a time. This will give him an understanding of the actual conditions of work done by those he supervises later. He will gain their confidence and be able to see that the work is carried on in a safe and efficient manner. Part of this experience may be acquired in his summer vacations during his undergraduate career. Such work would make a favorable impression on a prospective employer, especially if the graduate showed a willingness to continue it until he was prepared for something better. To summarize, the man in authority in the coal industry will not quarrel with the professor of mining engineering over details of curriculum. He will be pleased if the school sends him graduates who possess a good foundation in the courses studied, and who may be depended upon to do their work faithfully and intelligently. Such men will be ready when the time comes to assume their places as leaders of an essential industry.

Since the discovery of the first-known rare earth elements more than a century ago, these metals have always been of academic interest. It is not so well known, however, that a rather stable, respectably large industry based on rare earths and their related materials has been in operation for more than 60 years. Rare earths, of course, are the elements having atomic numbers 57 through 71--lanthanum through lutetium in the periodic table. The most important commercial members of this group are mixtures of the lower atomic-numbered rare earths, and cerium. Although yttrium is not a rare earth, it occurs with rare earths and its properties are so similar to them that. it must be included in a discussion of these elements. In addition, thorium is important to most producers of rare earths because their ores generally contain this element. Thorium extractive metallurgy and technology is closely related to rare earth chemistry due to the frequent similarity of properties.

There are two distinct methods of combating corrosive conditions. The first and most popular method is to choose a surface or material which will give adequate service under the specific and general conditions which are present. The second is a control or modification of the corrosive conditions to the end that metals and materials which would be attacked and corroded without such control or modification may be used. Under the first method of attack of the corrosion problem may be grouped such devices as the selection of metals or alloys which offer great resistance or the use of protective coatings such as paints, lacquers or metallic coatings. Such procedures are exceedingly useful. It is undoubtedly true that most of the problems of corrosion will be solved by recourse to this first method of attack. However, it must be remembered that there are many conditions in which metals are used where the choice of the particular metal to be used must depend upon other factors than corrosion behavior. Some of the factors which may govern the selection of metals for specific use are the physical and mechanical properties of the metals. But there is another factor which is of prime importance and that is relative price. It is the pressure of these factors of mechanical properties, physical characteristics, and relative price that has acted as the stimulus for the second methhod of combating corrosion. The producer and user of various metals is confronted with the fact that because of mechanical properties, physical characteristics, or price, the use of a particular metal is desirable even though the corrosion conditions are adverse to the use of the metal. In many cases, the successful use of the metal may be made even though it is impossible to protect the metal by coatings. This is rendered possible by control or modification of the corrosive media. Use of Sodium Silicate to Prevent Attack by Alkali Solutions This idea of controlling or modifying corrosive media is well illustrated by some recent experiences with aluminum. In the marketing of mineral products, it is always highly desirable for both the producer and the consumer to be able to discuss things in a common language, and this can only be done if there are standard methods for expressing the properties of the raw materials. Having developed such a form of expression, the next step would be the making of specifications, which may serve as a basis for selecting raw materials. Considering the large number of non-metallic minerals that are used, there are not a few for which there are no standard laboratory tests to be used in determining their properties, or even standard specifications on which grades or market price may be based. Indeed in many cases the consumer simply requests the producer to submit samples, and rejects or accepts them without any explanation. Could the producer know in advance just what the consumer needed, time and money might often be saved. It appears to the writer that it is of the highest importance to devise standard laboratory tests wherever possible, as this enables the consumer to state definitely what he needs, and is of great assistance to the producer. It should also work to reduce misunderstandings and disputes. In the case of sands, we find that they show a wide variation in their character, ranging from those that are so coarse as to be of gravelly nature to those that are so fine that they might be classed as silt; and from very clayey ones to those that are practically free from clay. For this wide range of sands, we have a corresponding variety of uses, which are based mainly on the physical properties of the sand, although these are not always very definitely stated. The chemical composition need rarely be considered, if the sand is of siliceous nature. To determine and express these properties there should be standard tests, which are to be followed in all cases where the material is tested in the laboratory. Two samples of drilling mud from the Hastings oil field, Texas, were tested, and the solids in each were separated into small fractions of a limited range in particle size. The mineral composition of each fraction by X-ray analysis is reported, and the results are interpreted in relation to other measured quantities, such as the physical properties of the original samples and the density of the various fractions. It was found that only 7 to 8 per cent by weight of the solids was of colloidal dimensions and that neither of the samples contained montmorillonite but did contain illite. Considerable calcite was also found. These data should be useful to the geologist interested in the origin and history of sedimentary strata as well as to the petroleum engineer.

W ill the location of the world&apos;s largest reserve of rutile, a titanium oxide mineral, in Sierra Leone, Africa, put an end to the worldwide shortage of this important mineral? According to officials of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. and the British Titan Products Co. Ltd., the answer is yes. These two firms have formed Sherbro Minerals Ltd., a new company that will recover and refine the relatively rare mineral near Africa&apos;s West Coast. PPG owns 80% of Sherbro, and British Titan 20%.
