JUST as the mineralogical name bauxite has come to include several minerals not known at the time the name was first applied, so the concept of bauxite as the one source of alumina must be enlarged during the war period to include the production of alumina from other, low-grade sources. Speaking in a narrow mineral logical sense, there is no such thing as bauxite, and similarly there is now no one source of alumina, and no one process for its extraction.

Although blister copper has been produced at the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's works since 1896, it is only during the past five years that electrolytic refining has been undertaken locally, this having been done previously at customs refineries, at first in the United States, and afterwards at Port Kembla, New South Wales. Plate loading tests which use surficial loading of a rock mass are employed quite extensively for the determination of in situ deformability characteristics of rock masses. The cable jacking method is essentially a surficial plate load test in which the test load is provided by reaction against a cable anchored at some depth below the rock surface. The results of the test are usually evaluated within the framework of the classical theory of elasticity to generate estimates for the bulk deformability properties of the rock mass. In the conventional evaluation of this test it is assumed that the test plate is rigid and that the embedded anchor load has no influence on the test plate settlement. The purpose of this paper is to examine the possible influences of the plate flexibility and the anchor load location on the effective settlement of the test plate. The variational estimates presented in the paper are valid for moderately flexible test plates which are characterized by a relative rigidity parameter Numerical results are developed in the form of correction factors that should be applied to the cable jacking results to arrive at the deformability characteristics of the tested rock mass.

The purpose of this paper is to guide in the selection of sampling equipment and outline design parameters for the cutters used in dry and wet sampling without adding redundant mathematical probability formulas. Special attention will also be given to the equipment used in conjunction with samplers and sampling system, such as feeders, crushers, chutes, launders, and controls.

The slip and twinning planes have been determined in deformed crystalsof titanium by an X-ray method of analysis. The slip planes are of the type {1010} and {1011}, while the twinning planes are of the type {1072}, {1121}, and (1122). In the case of the predominant (1010) slip, a type I digonal axis of indices <1120> was the effective slip direction. Microscopic observations on the appearance of the three twin types disclosed a distinct difference in their shapes, and an attempt was made to correlate this difference with the amount of twinning shear. The slip mechanism was discussed on the basis of the difference in c/a ratios for the common hexagonal close-packed metals. IT is a general rule that slip in metals occurs most easily on the planes of greatest atomic density and of the largest interplanar spacing, and that the direction of slip is a close-packed direction. Thus, of the hexagonal close-packed metals which have been investigated by the German school in the decade 1925 to 1935 (cadmium, zinc, and magnesium), it has been found that slip occurs on the basal plane (0001) and in a <1120> direction.&apos; In the case of magnesium above 225oC, slip occurs on a first-order pyramidal plane (1011) as well as on the basal plane.&apos; The hexagonal metals, moreover, deform in part by twinning, and, again with the exception of magnesium at elevated temperatures, the twinning plane has always been reported to be a second-order pyramidal plane {1012).&apos; In view of this consistency in the plastic behavior of these metals, it has been supposed that the same slip and twinning elements would be operative in the other important hexagonal close-packed metals (titanium, zirconium, and beryllium), although there are some reasons why this may not be so. Referring to the tabulation in Table I of the axial ratios of the important metals in this structural class, it may be seen that they can be categorized into three distinct groups depending on the value of their c/a ratios. In the first group are cadmium and zinc with large positive deviations from the ideal ratio for closest packing. This expansion in the direction of the c-axis would be such as to accentuate the basal plane as the slip plane, because it increases the interplanar spacing. The second group includes cobalt and magnesium, which closely approximate the ideal ratio. In the third group are zirconium, titanium, and beryllium whose axial ratios are decidedly less than the ideal. The lattice of the elements in this group is compressed along the c-axis which, in effect, tends to make the basal plane less favorable for slip inasmuch as it reduces the interplanar spacing and the atomic density of this plane. Thus, for metals in the third group, it may be said that there is a certain indefiniteness about the glide plane, in that planes other than the basal plane may be expected to operate. The fact that magnesium begins to exhibit planes other than the normal slip and twinning planes at elevated temperatures may indicate that this behavior will become more pronounced in metals of lower axial ratios. For this reason it might be expected that the slip and twinning behavior of zirconium, titanium, and beryllium would be different from that found in cadmium and zinc. One indication that there is a difference is reflected in the recent work which has been done on the deformation textures of these metals."&apos; As will be shown later, there is a significant difference between the rolling textures of cadmium, zinc, and magnesium on the one hand, and zirconium, titanium, and beryllium on the other, and this difference suggests that the mechanism of plastic flow is not the same in these two groups of metals. From these considerations, therefore, it may be seen that there are good reasons why it cannot be concluded that titanium will have the same crystal-lographic elements of slip and twinning as those exhibited by zinc and cadmium. For the complete determination of these elements it would be most advantageous to have single crystals. However, much valuable information can be obtained by using coarse grained polycrystalline specimens, provided the grains are sufficiently large to permit X-ray

DURING the course of a lubrication study in relation to the compacting of metal powders, it became desirable to measure the thickness of sprayed graphite coatings on steel dies for hot pressing. The thickness of these lubricant coatings ranged between 0.0001 and 0.002 in. In their particular case, the authors were interested in a method for measuring the lubricant thickness on tapered die inserts having curved surfaces. The lubricant was sprayed on the inserts at an elevated temperature and it was desirable to measure the thickness as soon as possible after application. Various standard types of commercial equipment were tried. Most of the available devices operated on either a mechanical or magnetic principle. Extraction of minerals from Searles Lake brines has taken place since 1873. Early operations for borax and raw trona found on the surface were expanded after 1914 to include potash, salt cake, and soda ash. A new soda ash plant now in operation will double area production. The evaporite beds were formed by desiccation of eastern Sierra runoff. The resulting series of brine-bearing salt beds supply the fluids necessary to feed the area chemical plants. Production methods include evaporation and crystallization for potash, borax, and salt cake; carbonation of brine to recover soda ash; and organic extraction of borax.

Exploration targets and results in the mining industry are commonly summarized in terms of tonnage and grade. Business appraisals require, as additional information, the expected profit or loss implied by the physical summary. The early incorporation of knowledge gained through financial analysis computations can provide a means for economically resolving many common exploration and development problems. Examples of such applications from the activities of exploration planning, reconnaissance, land acquisition, and development planning are presented in this paper.

DRILLING through caving formations in diamond drill holes at depths greater than 2000 ft has long been a serious problem. These caving formations are normally passed only by casing the hole or by cementing the hole. Casing the hole is possible only when a resulting smaller hole is acceptable. In as much as only a limited number of reductions are economically practical, cementing is frequently considered the only method suitable for solving these problems. Cementing either by pumping a slurry into the hole or by dropping cylinders containing cement has proved satisfactory on holes under 2000 ft. In holes substantially deeper than 2000 ft these methods are not satisfactory, since during the pumping process cement separates out, whereas cylinders usually break before the bottom of the hole is reached. A new procedure, the injector method, apparently solves these problems.* With this method, cement is lowered in the hole in a cylinder, the cement being

The symposium on production for the year 1942 contains no papers on the foreign situation except those on Argentina and Mexico. It has always been the policy of officers in charge of the symposium to refrain from publishing information that might possibly injure national or private interests. At the close of the war we hope again to publish full and accurate records of production abroad. Excerpts From Circular to Authors In order to facilitate interpretation of the data in this chapter, we print the following excerpts from the Circular to Authors. The field is the unit in this tabulation. In cases of fields extending across State boundaries, such as Rodessa, it is suggested that each State author treat the section of the field in his State as a unit, and by a footnote indicate that the field extends into an adjacent State. Each space in Table I may represent one of four possibilities; either it is not applicable to the particular field, or the proper entry is not determinable, or the proper entry may be determinable but is not determinable from data available to the author, or the proper entry is determinable. When spaces are not applicable, leave blank; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable but not determinable from data available to the author, please insert y; in spaces where the proper entries are determinable by the author, make such entries. y implies a Rope that in some future year a definite figure will be available. The entry of a zero is a positive declaration, and it is an important declaration where it is in order. Inability to determine precisely the correct entry for a particular space should not lead the author to insert merely y. Contributions of great value may be made by the author in many cases where entries are not subject to precise determination. In such cases the author should use his good judgment and make the best entry possible under the circumstances. For many spaces the correct entries represent the opinion of the author (for example, "Area Proved") and in such cases the entry need not be hedged to such extent as when the quantities are definite yet can be ascertained only approximately by the author. In cases under definite headings but where figures are only approximate, the author may use x. It is thought that the nearest whole numbers are sufficiently accurate for our purposes except as to percentage of sulphur in oil. If an author desires to report any other figures to tenths, he may do so. The quantity of gas produced should include, where possible, gas sold or otherwise marketed, and gas blown into the air, burned as flares or otherwise wasted. Segregation of these figures would be interesting if the authors can make such segregation. In any event, the figures should represent as nearly as possible the total quantity of gas removed from the reservoir. Under the columns on "Depth," the average depth to the top of the productive zones and to the bottom of the productive wells, when subtracted, should give the approximate thickness of the productive zone. For fields where this is not true because of unusually high dip or for some other reasons, it is suggested that the authors indicate in their text the approximate average thickness of the productive zone.

Technical and financial feasibility studies conducted at the Middle East Technical University, in Ankara, Turkey, have revealed that a 400 km long prospective slurry pipeline between Hasançelebi and Iskenderun could efficiently and economically transport iron concentrates, with a size of 55%-325 mesh and of amounts varying between 0.25 and 8.0 million tonslyear. Particularly for annual throughputs above 500,000 tons, favorable results have been obtained regarding the processing of the ore, the applicability, the transport cost, and the foreign ex- change currency savings.

A few months ago I had the honor of addressing the Society of Mining Engineers annual banquet in Sun Francisco. I have since been asked to amplify some of the remarks I made at that time concerning the management policies of the Kaiser organization and various aspects of our corporate thinking. This is a difficult task for an insider like myself. I look at the different companies, and the men who run them, and it is hard to think of these men in terms of policy or procedure. Actually I prefer the term management philosophy to either policy or procedure. My father, Henry J. Kaiser, is not only the founder but the guiding spirit of our organization. His philosophy, and in turn that of the organization, centers around two concepts, service and accomplishment.

BEFORE I go any farther, I wish to show you the different kinds of guns, as I have been able to understand them from the finished works, for no one is found to have written or spoken of this. " If you could only get that motion into a machine," said a gentleman, as he watched the process of making a " van " on a shovel, and saw the copper roll up to the highest point, "it would beat the world for slime-dressing." This idea has led to many an effort to get into a machine that peculiar motion, called the " vanning motion;" and so cams, eccentrics, eccentric gears, levers, bell-cranks, togglejoints, links, springs, etc., have been brought into requisition, while a contribution has been laid upon all the conceivable motions, rolling, tumbling, swinging, jerking, tossing, dropping, tripping, intermittent, regular and irregular, or a combination of some of them, to which have been added percussion, concussion, and more discussion —all in a vain attempt to combine in a single machine the consecutive motions of the shovel, in washing, flowing, and tossing the van. The Patent Office Reports, and the various mills of the country, show, as a result of this, a lot of gimeracks, most of which never went beyond a first trial, finding their way to the scrap-heap. Others still running might as well be there; while some have considerable merit for dressing other and richer sands than copper. It does look tempting to see that clean edge of copper climbing up the shovel-blade; but those who have seen in it such visions of large fortunes have not considered the time it takes to make a van, compared with the small quantity treated upon the shovel; and this points to the reason for the failure of all that class of machines called " vanning machines," when used for dressing copper slimes, namely, a lack of capacity. The writer has come to this conclusion through an experience with the Rittinger side percussion-table of the most improved make, sent from Germany to the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, and with the Ellenbecker tables, used by the same company, both of which are good types of that class of machines. In both of these machines, the tables are suspendetl by rods which allow them to swing, and they can also be adjusted for the purpose of varying the inclination of the table. In the Rittinger machine, the motion of the table is at a right angle to the flow of the slime, being produced by a wiper-cam which throws the table against a spring, which throws it quickly back against a stop, the percussion throwing up the mineral. AT THE beginning of October, the outstanding feature in the world&apos;s affairs was the Turkish question. The Turks, victorious over the Greeks, repudiated the treaty of Sévres with the Allies and demanded their reestablishment at Con-stantinople and in Thrace. The British resisted, but deserted by the French and Italians, at a military conference at Mudania the Turks obtained about everything that they wanted. Great Britain suffered a loss of prestige that may bear evil fruit in the future. The possession of the Dardanelles by the Turks pro-duced the ruin of Russia and Rumania in the great war, prolonged it two years and made it necessary for America to go in. Disruption of the entente puts the Turks back where they were. In America a strong and spontaneous reaction developed against this, not for any diplomatic reasons, but purely out of the sentiment that the atrocious Turks should be confined to Anatolia. Some strong leadership would have aligned the United States with Great Britain in this matter. As it is, the French have had their way but have alienated much of their American friendship. The temporary composition of Turkish affairs at the Mudania conference had momentous consequences. The Greeks, having expelled King Constantine, in their distress and despair reverted to the guidance of Venizelos. Evacuation of the Grecian military forces and the entire Grecian population from Eastern Thrace began, the people not venturing to remain there. From all accounts their withdrawal, attended by great hardships, was reminiscent of folk movements in the Middle Ages. The vanguard of the Angora Govern-ment set foot in Constantinople, marking the return of the Turks to Europe, while the Allied forces remain-ing there temporarily stood in chagrin. In Great Britain an important element of the Con-servatives withdrew their support from the Coalition Government, thus leading to the resignation of Lloyd George, the installation of Andrew Bonar Law as premier and a general election with a tri-party contest among the Conservatives, Liberals and Labor, called for Nov. 15. Civil war continued in Ireland, but attention was diverted from it by the more important events in the Near East.

INDEX TO TRANSACTIONS After a delay of many months, which is very much regretted, but which, it is hoped, will be one means of insuring a volume of accuracy where accuracy is very important, the Institute now has for distribution copies of the index of Volumes XXXVI to LV, inclusive. This is more than a mere index off names of authors and titles of papers. Every important topic under consideration by author or discusser is introduced under such key-word as will enable an engineer to locate the desired information with the minimum expenditure of time. This index sells for $5* in half morocco binding and $4*. in paper covers. With the index of Volumes II to XXXV (which sells for $5 in half morocco and $4 in paper covers), it forms a complete index of the first fifty-five volumes of the Institute&apos;s Transactions. These collective indexes are very valuable to members of the Institute, enabling them to look up matters in their own library; if they have the volumes to which the indexes refer, they can get the information at once, and, if not, they can readily determine whether or not a visit to a nearby public library is desirable.
