The use of the centrifuge for dewaxing lubricating oils grew out of the effort to secure better results than had been attained by the common "cold settling" process. This process was the only known method for dewaxing steam refined cylinder stock (600" F. fire test), the product known as "bright stock" being commonlyused for building up "pressed," i.e., dewaxed neutrals of, say, 200-sec. viscosity [to a higher value. The process consisted of mixing the cylinder stock with approximately one and one-half times its volume of naphtha, heating, to dissolve completely all the oil and wax and then slowly chilling to about 15" F. in large insulated tanks. This caused the wax to precipitate. It was allowed to settle out by gravity. The supernatant liquid was then drawn off and the naphtha distilled off, leaving a still residue of bright stock. The sediment from the settling, of a slushy nature, was withdrawn. After removing the naphtha by distillation the residue was petrolatum. At some point in the process, preferably after the dilution but before chilling, the mixture was decolored by percolation through fuller's earth. The finished bright stock produced by this process had a cold test of about 50" F. Efforts to improve this by chilling to a lower temperature resulted in a considerable reduction in yield, and increased uncertainty of settling. Even when chilling to 15" F. it was not uncommon to find that after a week's waiting a tank had not settled. It was then necessary to heat and rechill. This uncertainty was a serious problem; in one case a refinery superintendent had men riveters hold pneumatic hammers against the tank for hours, hoping thus to cause agglomeration and settling of the wax. Yields of bright stock above 70 per cent, were uncommon. THE earlier struggles in petroleum geology were directed to solving the origin and method of accumulation of petroleum. We are now fairly well agreed on those subjects. Most of us think that the great mass of petroleum commercially produced comes from plants or animals, or possibly from both. We are confident that the oil was not produced where it is now found but has accumulated in reservoirs of various kinds. The types of reservoirs are certainly variable but they just as certainly follow definite geologic laws. Some of these types of reservoirs can be determined from surface study; others cannot. We know, too, that these types of reservoirs (largely structures such as anticlines, domes, and terraces) are much more widespread than the oil pools. In other words, there are many places where good sands and good structures exist but where oil is not found. It is the purpose of this paper, therefore; to attempt to analyze, from a regional standpoint, some of the conditions that control the presence or absence of oil pools and to group them in a regional way, hence the term "Petroliferous Provinces." The paper lays no claim to presenting new facts but attempts to group and classify the information that so many have expressed again and again. The essential factors for an oil field are petroleum, a reservoir material, and conditions under which the petroleum can enter the reservoir but cannot escape except through the drill holes. The paper will first discuss the source of petroleum as it occurs in definite regions, then the regional arrangement of reservoir strata, and finally the areal arrangement of structures. To have petroleum, there must be a source. Since living matter is considered the source of the petroleum, geological conditions must, have been such that living organisms were abundant. Arid regions on the earth's surface have not given rise to living things-in sufficient abundance to produce oil; similarly, too cold regions and saline inland lakes. C. E. Murphey, Jr., has presented a relevant, simplified comparison of drill string response when drilling with and without bumper subs. His point that drilling without bumper subs gives conditions further from resonance is valid. Thus, drilling from a floating vessel without bumper subs is undoubtedly feasible, especially when the heave motions of the drilling vessel are small. When these heave motions become large, an evaluation of the magnitude of the change of bit weight is a requirement for a realistic comparison between using and not using bumper subs. As Murphey states, this evaluation should include the effects of damping and presence of drill collars. The analysis would be similar to that presented in our Appendix, but is far beyond the scope of this Reply. ***

It is of common knowledge that loading within a grinding mill, whether ball, rod, pebble, or autogenous, is directly related to the lubrication back pressure developed between the mill journal and bearing shoe during mill operation. The merits of both forced-feed and gravitational-feed bearing lubrication methods are discussed with particular emphasis directed toward their applicability to continuous grinding mill inventory control. Data obtained from wet grinding mill applications in the cement and mining industries is presented to more clearly define the influence of such variables as feed consistency, slurry viscosity, mill retention, bearing oil temperature, grind fineness, and grinding media wear on the measured journal lubrication back pressure during automatic mill feed control. Finally, various grinding mill control schemes for maintaining constant mill loading and consequently optimizing mill operating efficiency are discussed and evaluated as to their advantages and/or disadvantages.

CHAIRMAN DOUGHTON of the House Ways and Means Committee announced on September 23 that the committee has scheduled public hearings on an excess-profits tax, beginning on November 15, 1950. In the meantime, the staff of the Joint Committee on Internal Revenue Taxation and the staff of the Treasury Department are to confer jointly on this question in the hope that such conferences may result in the preparation of a report on excess-profits tax proposals which could be used as a basis for testimony before the committee. It is thought that this procedure may aid in the draft of an excess-profits tax bill for introduction in the House when Congress reconvenes on November 27.

DURING the years 1875 to 1879 I had charge of the Rockwood furnaces and mines, situated forty miles from the nearest railway communication at that time, and one hundred miles north of Chap tanooga, Tenn., by the Tennessee River. The small furnace with old-fashioned stoves, then in blast, was built under great difficulties by General Wilder. The early conditions were somewhat as follows: The ore was fossil ore of the Clinton group ; very fine and generally wet, without other admixture. The coke had a large amount of ash, and the fur" nace appeared to be badly scaffolded at times. On many days only a few tons of iron could be obtained. The founder generally id creased the revolutions of the engine when signs of chilling appeared,. The cinder at such times was black, very scoriatious, often closely resembling mill cinder. When the pressure was increased (the joints being the old-fashioned rust joints), leaks in the blast-pipe occurred It was noted that when the blast was stopped, and the leak bolt imperfectly remedied, the furnace improved a little. This set me thinking on the right track; and I took the responsibility of be coming my own founder for a time. A scaffolded condition had existed, and the situation was a trying one. Strange to say the negroes proved excellent furnace-men. Conceiving the hearth of the furnace to be similar to the grate area of a steam-boiler, capable of disposing of but so much fuel per hour, and requiring only a corresponding amount of air, it follows that an excess of air will burn the fuel not yet arrived at the hearth!, and raise the melting-point far above the tuyeres. This might pro duce scaffolding or at any rate choke the boshes, and leave less fuel to be consumed in the hearth. Thus for the time being less ail;. would be needed, as the continued burning of fuel in and above the boshes, would only aggravate the trouble. This condition of affairs accounted for the black cinder; the heat above having melted ore not yet perfectly reduced. This view decided me to reduce the revolutions of the engine; thefurnace finally became gray, as might have been expected. Any attempt to increase the speed produced black cinder and hard iron ;

Alfred E. Hunt, Pittsburgh, Pa. (communication to the Secretary): My experience has been similar to that described by Mr. Sperry, regarding a 50 per cent. alloy of nickel and aluminum. Moreover, the same phenomena occur with a 50 per cent. alloy of iron and aluminum, manganese and aluminum, chromium and aluminum, or tin and aluminum. It seems that there is a narrow limit of composition of these metals, within which, when they are alloyed, they crumble down into a powder after standing for any considerable time. The resulting powder does not seem to be a separation or disintegration into the elements composing the alloy, but simply a powdering down of the alloy itself. The physical properties and utility of any of these alloys in pondered form have not been carefully investigated as yet, and offer a field worthy of further investigation. THE State of Ohio is among the pioneers in the production of oil and gas. Numerous anticlinals, such as the Macksburg, Cow Run and Newport, have been thoroughly developed, and the pools found in connection with them are quite in accord with the structural theory. Numerous oil and gas pools found in the Berea sand, however, demand a different explanation. The study of these pools belongs to the sub-surface geologist, as it is possible to understand the factors controlling "off-structure" accumulations only after a careful study of well records. By carefully analyzing the various 'conditions over a large territory, it is possible to understand the otherwise meaningless mass of data that one may have at hand, and put it into tangible shape, from which various conclusions may be drawn. The territory here discussed includes Belmont, Guernsey, Muskingum, Noble, Monroe, Morgan, Washington, Athens and Meigs counties, containing the majority of the prolific oil and gas pools of the Carboniferous system in southeastern Ohio. The general dip of the strata is to the southeast, the entire territory lying on the northwestern flank of the Appalachian geosyncline. The best known oil- and gas-producing horizon in the territory is the Berea sand, which lies near the lower part of the Mississippian, with the Sunburry shales (the coffee-shales of the driller) above, and the Bedford shales below it. The Bedford is underlain by the thick Ohio shales. The Ohio and Bedford contact is considered to be the dividing line between the Carboniferous and Devonian systems. The Berea is one of the most persistent of recognizable oil and gas horizons; its outcrop has always been found in its expected place, and it has always been penetrated whenever the drill went deep enough. It is not expected, however, even of the most uniform formations, that no lithological variations should occur, and the Berea is no exception. Nevertheless, there appears to be a certain regularity in its variation, the main features of which directly affect the accumulation of petroleum.
