Sodium chloride crystals are brittle in the presence of surface microcracks. Water immersion leads to an enhancement of ductility which is retained indefinitely in dry air providing the crystal is dried without leaving a surface precipitate. Storage in a damp atmosphere results in a surface reaction and consequent rembrittlement. IT IS not necessary to travel hundreds of miles from New York City to see examples of modern mining methods applied in tunnel work. In the various subway jobs, for instance, underground work is done on so large a scale as to justify the oft-quoted remark that here is the world's greatest mining camp. In such cases, however, the size of the excavation makes wholly disproportionate comparison with the haulage drift or adit level of the West. But in West Orange, N. J., Antonio -DiMarco is driving a tunnel from two headings on opposite sides of First Mountain, under contract with the town of West Orange, which is similar in nearly every respect to the type of work that must be done at the mines, and merits description as an example of fast and economical tunnel driving under conditions commonly met with by the mining engineer in more inaccessible parts.

Petroleum development in Oklahoma during the year 1932 was rather colorless. The crude price structure, while it was relatively stable, was too low to encourage wildcat drilling and proration restrictions were such that producing wildcats were usually faced with the drab prospect of being limited to 50 bbl. per day. Proration in flush and semiflush areas was for the most part successfully accomplished. Military enforcement of proration rulings was deemed necessary at Oklahoma City. The trend toward cost cutting and abandonment of unprofitable wells continued through the year. It is estimated that 1500 wells were abandoned and it is not unlikely that as many more were shut down which will never produce again. Oklahoma crude oil stocks were reduced by approximately 11 million barrels in 1932. It is generally conceded that inventories of material have been appreciably reduced. Leasing activity was limited principally to rental reductions and to close scrutiny of all lease holdings. There were numerous "leasing plays" based on geophysical information but with few exceptions they were small. It is estimated that over 15 per cent of the acreage under lease at the beginning of 1932 was surrendered during the year. There was a tendency through the year to prospect shallow pay sands formerly passed by in the search for deeper production. This is especially true of the Seminole area, where the Calvin sand received considerable attention, and where some good wells were completed. Prices There were two price changes during the year that affected the majority of crude sales. Using 36 gravity A.P.I. as a basis of comparison, the price was increased on April 11 from $0.77 to $0.92. On Dec. 16, the price dropped to $0.69. During the fall months there were several postings higher than this schedule but all postings were at the same level at the end of the year.

WHEN scientific literature was lacking or meager, research necessarily meant laboratory investigation above all else. Today, scientific literature has attained tremendous proportions, and the volume increases at a much faster rate than it is digested and efficiently utilized. For that reason the present-day research worker should spend much more time in the library, and correspondingly less in the laboratory, than is the general custom. Library research would overcome two serious errors often made by scientists: duplication of work described completely and failure to appreciate inventions described almost verbatim in the literature. To emphasize these failings that often occur in present-day research, consider a hypothetical scientist as he conducts his search from inception to the stage where it is made available to the public by patent or other publication.

(communication to the Secretary*) :—The authors of this paper are to be commended for their industry and congratulated upon the many interesting results which were the fruit of their researches. While thoroughness has marked their work in general, yet on a few points in particular they have touched but lightly, for which reason, it would appear to me, they have hit wide of the mark in their respective conclusions. The work alluded to pertains chiefly to the occurrence of magnetic iron oxide (ferroseferric oxide) in copper-mattes. Because the authors find that the magnetic residue, left by the dissolved sulphides, varies largely in quantity according to the strength of nitric acid used (with potassium chlorate) in dissolving the mattes, they conclude :— "It appears, therefore, that the ferroso-ferric oxide is the result of precipitation by the oxidizing agent, rather than an original constituent of the matte." In this part of their investigation, Messrs. Gibb and Philp have ignored some well-established data,. In the first place, they have overlooked the fact that there are mattes which are strongly magnetic and others which scarcely show any magnetic property. There is nothing in their work tending to explain this variation. They Seem to have tested none of their products for magnetism. Secondly, they have overlooked the fact that magnetic iron oxide probably exists in all ore-charges in the copper-matting furnaces, and, under the given conditions, that this oxide is very difficult to reduce and to combine with silica to form slag. Thirdly, they pay no attention to the varying specific gravity of the several grades of copper-matte, which may exceed, equal, or fall below that of the magnetic oxide. Insoluble residues from three sequences of Paleozoic marine evaporates (Retsof salt bed in western New York, Salado Formation in southeastern New Mexico, and Paradox Member of the Hermosa Formation in southeastern Utah) are rich in trioctahedral clays. Chlorite (clinochlore), corrensite (mixed-layer chlorite-trioctahedral smectite), talc, and illite (the only dioctahedral clay) are the dominant clay minerals; serpentine, discrete trioctahedral smectite (saponite), and interstratified talc-trioctahedral smectite are sporadically abundant. These clay-mineral assemblages differ chemically and mineralogically from those observed in most continental and normal marine rocks, which commonly contain kaolinite, dioctahedral smectite (beidellite-montmorillonite), illite, mixed-layer illite-dioctahedral smectite, and, in most cases, no more than minor quantities of trioctahedral clay minerals. The distinctive clay mineralogy in these evaporate sequences suggests a largely authigenic origin. These clay minerals are thought to have formed during deposition and early diagenesis through interaction between argillaceous detritus and Mg-rich marine evaporate brines.

Discoveries in Michigan, which at the beginning of the year 1934 indicated possible new areas, did not develop into fields of market-breaking proportions. Hart, Oceana County, developed small production from the Traverse lime. Edmore, Montcalm County, proved a small area for oil from the Traverse. West Branch, Ogemaw County, previously reported as Ogemaw, had quite a drilling campaign but was somewhat disappointing because wells were small and erratic. During the year, 30 wells were completed at West Branch, and at the end of the year 15 others in and around this field were under way. At West Branch the Traverse lime, found at 1800 ft., has thin porous streaks near the top, which make small wells; the Dundee lime at 2800 ft. produces from a porous zone of varying thickness. Over the entire field the Dundee wells average 10 to 20 bbl. per day. Acid treatment has materially increased production from some Dundee wells in this field. About 3000 acres have been proved productive from the Traverse and Dundee. At the close of the year the well in Beaverton township, Gladwin County, is probably the most discussed of any in Michigan and may be opening a new field of some proportions. It had an initial production of 70 bbl. daily from the Dundee lime at 3830, which has decreased to 25 bbl. per day. Deeper drilling into the lime may increase production. During 1935 the area around this test will probably be the most active in the state. Structural conditions in Gladwin County, as in other parts of Central Michigan, are obscured by a thick mantle of glacial drift and it will take considerable drilling to outline subsurface conditions accurately. The most important new shallow gas area of the year is around Edmore in Mecosta and Montcalm counties. Eight wells have been drilled to the Michigan stray and the upper Marshall sand, having a combined initial production of 30 million cubic feet. These gas wells are scattered over so wide an area that an estimate of proven territory cannot be made until more drilling is done. At the present time no gas is being sold from Edmore.

The mechanism of blasting and the effect that blasting has on rock properties including the generation of new cracks and the opening of existing joints is discussed and compared with changes in seismic velocities. .Knowing the extent of blast induced damage and the overall stable slope angle it is shown that it is possible to design blasting so as not to induce any damage behind the toe of the blast area. Practical methods of blasting to meet this criterion and the results of these blasts are then discussed.

BUNKER Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co. has three major sources of ore at present: high grade square-set ore, low grade caving ore, and low grade reclaimed washed jig tailing. These three ores constitute the feed to the 3000-tpd concentrator that produces lead-silver, zinc, and pyrite concentrates. Each ore has different characteristics of grindability, mineral particle size, composition, and content, but all are amenable to the same mill circuit and reagents. The gangue is primarily quartzite. The Bunker Hill concentrator is now using a coarse primary grind followed by a regrind of sand fractions of lead rougher tailing, lead middling, and lead cleaner tailing, and further regrind of sand fractions of zinc middling and zinc cleaner tailing. This is done in order to recover all valuable minerals at the largest size possible. The tendency to overgrind the ore particles, which are more easily ground than the gangue particles, is thereby reduced-lessening their loss in the flotation tailings. The coarse primary grind and regrind method has the advantages of: providing more selective grinding, minimizing sliming, giving a cleaner lead-zinc separation, and reducing mill requirements for reagents and water. Improved lead-zinc separation raises overall recovery and also increases lead and zinc recovery in the respective concentrates by keeping middling particles out of concentrate and tailing.

VEINS of asphalt fill and seal vertical fault fissures at the surface of a large domal structure near Bejucal, Havana Province (about 19 miles south of Havana), so this structure was chosen, by Barnabas Bryan, for the drilling of a well on the theory that oil had risen from below the Cretaceous and had entered the porous sands of the Upper Cretaceous, which outcrop in three places within a radius of 12 miles. The asphalt in these fault fissures, he contended, had sealed them and thereby prevented further dissipation of the oil. Furthermore, he found, in the asphalt, specimens of sand and lime that were indications of its upward migratory character. Ralph Arnold, who discovered the Upper Cretaceous sand saturated with oil in the outcrop near Mariel, in Pinar del Rio Province, has compared the Bejucal structure with the Santa Maria field in California. The surface rock of the structure is Oligocene limestone and shales, thin, bedded and well stratified. This formation has, heretofore, been assigned to the Eocene with a thickness of 3000 ft. and locally called the Nazareno formation. Paleontologic examination of well cuttings, however, has disclosed Oligocene fossils at a depth of 1142 ft. and Upper Cretaceous fossils at a depth of 1541 ft., leaving approximately 400 ft. of very parenthetical Eocene. Whether there is any Eocene in this structure has not been determined.

It is to be hoped, and with much confidence, that by the rapid extension of the use of such instruments, the economy and efficiency of these processes may undergo an increase which, in the aggregate, will be of the greatest importance. But much remains to be done in the way of devising pyrometers suitable for manufacturing purposes. THE mining district of São Fidelis, in the northern part of the State of Rio de Janeiro, is situated on the Paraiba River, where it crosses the Serra do Mar (Mountain of the Sea), in the center of a mountainous country having numerous graphitic outcrops. For a long time, these outcrops were irregularly explored by local people, who had little means and no technical advice. A few years ago, the Cia. Brasileira de Mineração de Grafite took over the control of some of the more important outcrops and entrusted to me the task of studying the ores and establishing a flowsheet for a pilot plant to be situated in Sao Fidelis-the ore to be concentrated being mostly of a very high grade. MINERALIZATION AND ORES The rocks of the district are mostly gneiss and crystalline schists, with occasional interstratification of dolomitic limestone belonging to the Archean Brazilian Fundamental Complex. The general direction of the beds is roughly between 60° and 80°E., with variable dip, generally nearly vertical. Mostly, direction and dip of the graphitic outcrops is concordant with the embanking gneisses or schists. These outcrops seem to be aligned in two or three parallel zones (Pádua, São Fidelis, Macabú), the São Fidelis zone being the best known and the most important to date. Two outcrops of the São Fidelis zone, Saudade and São Benedito, are now being exploited. Mining has been carried out, so far, on a small scale. The mineralization consists of a vein of nearly massive graphite in a very compact, partially granitized gneiss, with vertical dip. The vein is most irregular, with nests and lenses irregularly distributed along the fracture plane. The ore consists chiefly (particularly in São Benedito) of massive graphite appearing and disappearing along the main direction of the vein, forming a succession of irregular lenses in a sort of rosary design. The average width is more or less one foot, with variations from zero to 6 feet. The lode minerals are quartz, a little feldspar and garnet (the latter having its origin perhaps in the embedding gneisses), with rare ferruginous clays on the outcrops. In Saudade a little pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite is found occasionally, as well as a carbonaceous mineral, very light, black and shiny, with conchoidal fracture, looking like a sort of jet. The composition of this mineral has not yet been established, but it seems to be very complex. The mineralization seems to be hydrothermal at a rather low temperature, perhaps mesothermal.
