The following outline has been prepared by request with the help of leading professors, business men, and social workers. It is arranged to cover 64 or preferably 96 class periods-four to eight month's work at the rate of two or three periods a week. More time would be desirable, but less time would be better than nothing. Certain topics must be omitted, especially if the assigned number of periods are lessened, where time is lacking. Many subjects are suggested in order to permit of choice and adaptation to local conditions; this is merely a suggestive outline. The course should be supplemented y engineering trips to study certain industrial conditions and the betterment work of selected companies-and social agencies. It should also be accompanied by brief surveys and practical service by students along the lines indicated. Reports and essays should be written. This is not a regular course in sociology and economics. It is a course in "human engineering" and should probably be directed by an engineering professor of large practical experience. Other members of the faculty, sociologists, economists, selected engineers, employers, labor leaders or others may be requested to lead certain periods, as desired. Care has been taken to avoid biased judgment in selection of topics and references.* * The authors of this outline have compiled an exhaustive list of references to books and periodicals relating to each group of topics. Lack of space prevents the publication of these lists in the BULLETIN, but they will gladly be supplied on request.-Ed.

No symposium on die casting could be complete without consideration of the methods of formula and impurity control. No consideration of control would be complete without discussion of that new tool of the analytical chemist and inspector, the quartz spectrograph. Just as there is an increased appreciation of the possible applications of the die-casting process and of die castings, so too is there, slowly but surely, of the spectrograph. At present the role of the instrument might well be compared with that of brass or magnesium die castings. Neither is as widely understood or known as they will be. Product specifications are increasing and are getting more explicit and often more rigid. The designer, metallurgist and production engineer or superintendent will be forced to depend more and more on the chemical laboratory. Sampling, as well as analyses, testing and inspection problems will grow. The chemical laboratory must meet its increased responsibility and use of the spectrograph will become more common. Advantages of increased precision, greater speed, lessened labor and often lower costs cannot be ignored. It will be the purpose of this paper in part to outline the respective fields of chemical and spectrographic analyses and to indicate where one may overlap the other and in part to indicate certain possible sources of contamination of zinc-base die-cast alloys in particular.

This machine is an improvement on the well-known endless travelling belt used for dressing slimes in many mills; the chief point of difference, and constituting the essential advantage of the present over the old form, is the application to the machine of a secondary agitating or shaking motion, in addition to the ordinary progressive motion of- the belt. In the machine as heretofore made, the inclined belt or apron moved slowly up against a thin stream of water and ore, depositing the concentrations carried over in a tank placed below, through which the belt travelled, of course, in a reversed position. By reference to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that in this main principle the new modification does not differ materially; but the means by which it is carried out are essentially different. If a bar of wrought iron or steel is suddenly cooled from a bright red-heat, the contraction which then occurs is considerably greater than the expansion previously caused by heating the bar, so that its final length is considerably less than its initial length. Mr. Thomas Wrightson has investigated this phenomenon,* and has shown that not only does this permanent contraction occur on sudden cooling, but, if the heating and cooling be repeated, say fifty times, a further permanent contraction occurs at each successive cooling. In Mr. Wrightson's opinion, this contraction cannot be explained on mechanical grounds, and he ascribes it to some molecular change caused by sudden cooling; but I think that we need not invoke mysterious molecular changes to explain this phenomenon, which appears to me to be due to very simple and purely mechanical action. Let us consider the cooling as divided into two periods, in the first of which the exterior or skin of the bar becomes almost completely cooled, and hence tends to contract almost to its initial dimensions, while the still hot arid plastic interior contracts but little; in the second period the already cool skin remains nearly constant in temperature, and hence tends to contract but little, while the interior cools from a comparatively high temperature to the ordinary temperature, and hence undergoes great contraction. The excess of the contraction of the skin over that of the interior during the first period tends to make the bar bulge in the middle of its length. This, as well as the decrease of density which occurs, Mr. Wrightson correctly explains. The interior of the bar just sufficed to fill the skin when both were in their initial condition, before being heated at all. At the end of the first period, the volume of the still hot interior is more than the now contracted skin can hold while maintaining its initial shape; and the effect is much the same as when we powerfully blom into a soft India-rubher Lag of the shape of the skin of the bar—it bulges, and tends to approach the spherical shape, in which the ratio of surface to

IT is not my intention in this article to consider this subject in the light of the geographer or geologist, but rather in that of the mining engineer, and to endeavor to show the necessity and value to him of studying the minor details of the field or district in which he may be engaged. I t has been said by a distinguished geologist that "the natural boundaries of the geographer are rarely described by right lines. Whenever they occur, however, the geologist may look for something remarkable." And again : " Physiognomy is no idle or doubtful science in connection with geology. The physiognomy of a country indicates almost invariably its geological character." Our country furnishes examples enough of the truth of these remarks, and in no part of it is it so beautifully illustrated as in our own State, which has been so ably described by Prof. Lesley in his admirable little work on the "Topography of Coal." As the great mountain lines become guides to the geologist in determining and mapping out the geography of the formations, so do the minor details of topography become guides to the mining engineer in conducting his explorations, discovering of dislocations, and determining the character of the deposits which are the object of his search. I t is therefore requisite that he should, whilst making his surveys, pay the strictest attention to every variation of the landscape and surface of the ground. The recovery of copper by various combinations of processes centered around liquid ion exchange has certainly been accepted as a technically superior entity when compared to the widely applied classical method of cementation. While the technical aspect of liquid ion exchange processes has received much attention and acclaim through actual operating data, in particular the ease of handling solutions, percentage recovery, reduction of pollution, etc., the corresponding economic data has either gone unpublished or has been held confidential. Much of this economic data has now been made available for publication; and with this data, we at General Mills Chemicals, Inc., will attempt to present an accurate economic analysis of some liquid ion exchange plants and an economic comparison between these plants and the typical cementation facility.

To obtain a negative determination for prime farmlands in its approved lignite surface mine permit application, Phillips Coal Co. conducted a soils mapping effort and a historic land use survey. In addressing the justification for topsoil substitute materials, the company relied on results of a geochemical evaluation to demonstrate improved drainage, trafficability, and fertility. It also relied on results of field test plots. Post-mining land use was determined through the use of overlay maps considering existing land use, vegetation, and historic prime farmland. The reclamation plan incorporated these elements plus indicator species, existing vegetation, and wildlife needs.

Characterization of the rock mass in which deep underground structures are to be located is of critical importance to the feasibility and design of the structures. The process involves areal studies, subsurface exploration and extensive testing to obtain comprehensive data on the rock units which will enclose the excavated structures. The Illinois Deep Hole Project provides an example of characterization of rock at great depth describing the types and variety of tests and studies which were utilized and the results obtained.

A great deal is known, in a qualitative sense, about the performance of CMI EB-36 centrifuges. The manufacturer can give reliable guidance for the proper operation of its centrifuges and can give general estimates of expected product moisture and recovery. Quantitative estimates of the effects of changes in the various operating parameters are more difficult to find. The engineer faced with designing a preparation plant may be without the specific data needed to make decisions. For example, to obtain optimum product moisture when drying 9.5 mm X 595 µm (0.4 in. x 28 mesh) coal the centrifuge manufacturer recommends having no more than 5% -595 µm (-28 mesh) material in the centrifuge feed. They know that more -595 µm (-28 mesh)material in the feed will cause higher product moistures, but they usually cannot quantify the increased moisture or describe the shape of the product moisture versus -595 µm (-28 mesh) in the feed curve. This study was conceived to provide quantitative information on the EB-36 centrifuges, focusing on product moisture, recovery, and size degradation. All of the centrifuges tested were Model EB-36 dryers from Centrifugal and Mechanical Industries Inc. (CMI), with feeds in the nominal 9.5 mm x 595 pm (0.4 in. x 28 mesh) range. These are typical centrifugal dryers in this application, and many were available for testing.

DURING my stay at Raposos, State of Minas Geraes, Brdzil, I had the opportunity of making some observations, which, in the shape in which I am able to lay them before the Institute, are only to be considered as an experience which may possibly have important consequences. The ore-bodies worked there for gold are exclusively chimneys, mostly cylindrical, following the dip of the argillaceous slates (about 45° E.), without any visible connection with each other, without veins, and only exceptionally with some small stringers along the stratification, pinching out at short distances from the chimneys. They are composed of quartz with about 8 to 10 per cent. of pyrite and pyrrhotite, and different iron oxides.
