IN discussing the influence of a content of gases on metals and alloys we should probably first consider the physical and chemical conditions under which these gases may be present. By a chemical analysis, such as the total extraction of gases from the liquid metal by melting in a graphite crucible in vacuo, we find only the sum of gaseous chemical elements contained in the metal in any form and no reference is made to the special form under which they have been present previously. CONDITION OF GASES IN METALS In considering. gases in metals we may first turn our attention to gases simply dissolved. Because the solubility of almost, any gas decreases suddenly at the freezing point, most of them are released during solidification, developing rise of ingots and blowholes. If only a little gas is dissolved in the molten metal the size of such blowholes may be miscroscopical, or even submicroscopical, resulting in, a certain reduction of the notched-bar impact test values. Hydrogen is believed to become less soluble as the temperature is lowered and therefore increasing quantities of this gas may be evolved during cooling between the freezing point and room temperature, leading to unsoundness of the ingot at weak spots; i.e., at the grain boundaries. This gas at the grain boundaries probably is present at high pressure and therefore impairs the mechanical properties to a degree similar to that found in the hydrogen embrittlement of copper. Usually we may trace such gases by observing rising ingots, or at least by the formation of a characteristic pattern of small grooves upon etching. Another condition of gases present within metals is that of chemical compounds, the most common being oxides and mostly present as slag inclusions of various kinds. If such oxides are insoluble in the liquid metal and emulsify with it, we find microscopical or submicroscopical slag inclusions distributed homogeneously throughout the metal and spread through the whole mass of the crystals. During the last 15 years, the bucket wheel has become increasingly popular as a mining tool. Being a large-capacity continuous mining excavator, the machine offers low actual operating costs and low unit costs. Of German origin, the bucket wheel has now appeared on the American mining scene as well as in such other places as Australia, Northern Rhodesia, South Africa, Congo, Indonesia, and India. Patented in 1913, the first practical application waited until 1920 when a bucket wheel excavator was placed in operation at an open pit lignite mine in central Germany. This initial experiment met with little success due to difficulties in solving the technical problems of the machine's construction rather than to the design of the wheel itself.

The Oregon School of Mines Society held its regular monthly meeting on the evening of October 23. This meeting was an informal reunion at which members gave accounts of personal experiences during the last three months. Many members of both junior and senior classes answered their country's call to arms and so did not return to college. The senior class is particularly well represented in the Army, as two men hold lieutenant's commissions and a third is already in France with a hospital unit. The junior class has also contributed men to various branches of the service. Plans for the regular meetings include discussions by members and lectures by outside authorities oil mining and allied topics. These meetings are open to the lower classes and all others interested. The Oregon School of Mines Society, composed of members of the junior and senior classes, has, joined with the sophomore and freshman relining students in purchasing a Liberty Bond under the name of the Miners' Club of 0. The effect of small additions of oxygen on the hardness, density, and lattice parameters of high purity zirconium has been investigated. Precision parameter values and density of oxygen-free zirconium are given as: a,, - 3.2258 kX units, C = 5.1373 kX units, O23 = 6.507 g per cc. THE effect of oxygen on the hexagonal-phase lattice constants of pure zirconium is of interest for several reasons. The extensive hardening effect of oxygen noted by previous investigators' must be due in part to the lattice distortion accompanying its introduction and possibly to the preferred position of the oxygen atoms. De Boer and Fast' have shown that oxygen is taken into solid solution in large amounts, appearing to occupy an interstitial position. These authors also found that expansion of the lattice was not uniform since the a axis attained a constant value after the addition of 10 atomic pct while the c axis continued to expand. One of the most interesting of all the subjects required of persons studying the different facets of coal mining is coal mine gases. Some mine gases have been a real problem since the very beginning of underground mining and in the early days there was insufficient knowledge to really cope with them. The history of mining shows that until the last 50 years, work was done primarily by the hand methods which are primitive by today's standards. Miners had to contend with gases without the aid of enclosed lighting, permissible mine machinery, sophisticated testing devices, and high pressure ventilating fans. In early days the miners were not educated as to the different mine gases nor did they have the technical equipment to determine the actual composition of the deadly atmospheres they encountered. They simply applied a descriptive term to each gas or mixture of gases depending on its effect on a person or the surrounding atmosphere. The gases or mixtures of gases were then referred to as "damps" which was probably derived from the German word "dampf," meaning vapors or gases. The more common damps encountered were as follows: Blackdamp A condition of the atmosphere where a miner's light would be extinguished and in which breathing would be difficult, sometimes even resulting in suffocation. An atmosphere deficient in oxygen and which could contain a combination of any of the mine gases. Firedamp Flammable mixtures of methane and air which would either burn or explode when ignited. White Damp A mixture of gases containing carbon monoxide.

In 1892 I tested an ore, which was peculiarly difficult to treat, on several concentrators then in general use, including t,he Frue-vanner, the Luhrig table and the Cornish buddle. During 1972, Asarco's Silver Bell Unit embarked upon a project to test a digital computer-controlled grinding circuit against the performance of its other five grinding lines. The planning, implementation, and subsequent outcome of that project has been previously reported in a paper by Pittsl, et al. This paper will describe the solutions to major problems incurred during the implementation of this control strategy on the remaining five primary grinding lines. Changes made in operating philosophy and methods during the expansion will also be discussed.

Coal operators have been justified in spending most of their efforts and capital expenditures on improvements in productivity at the working face, on better transportation facilities, and on surface plants for improvement of the product by means of modern cleaning and drying equipment. Although the above subjects will continue to receive close study for further technological advances, there are other operations involved in the production of coal, which can be improved by the application of ingenuity and modern equipment.

Design methods for foundation anchors and sockets constructed in rock are based largely on empirical correlations which yield a reasonable estimate for initial capacity, but do not address the general concerns of failure mode and load-displacement behavior. This paper focuses on the behavior of foundation-rock interfaces and shows that interface behavior under increasing load results in a progression from an elastic response to secondary behavior, in which interface failure occurs, and finally to a residual stage at large deformations. Procedures to follow this progression are outlined to provide a more fundamental understanding of the problem.
