The following table shows the shipments from the four Lake Superior iron-ore districts during the year 1887, and their total outputs from their beginning until the close of 1887.* It will be noted that the Menominee district is second in importance in its total output tonnage to the close of the year 1887. These ore deposits are found in jasper-slates and in the horizon between these and their associated clay-slates; in the latter they are true contact-deposits. They are found in this jasper- and clay-slate formation under varied conditions, yet, in all, certain characteristic laws are preserved. The angle of dip varies from 15° to 20°, and up to 85° and even 90°, with the horizon. The ore is rather soft, bluish-black in color, and is a hematite. It varies in thickness from a few inches to one hundred feet, or more. It is mainly "Bessemer" ore, containing 57 to 63 per cent, of metallic iron, and .03 to .07 per cent, of phosphorus. In the mining nomenclature of this range two conditions of the ore-lens are described by the terms "dip" and "pitch." The former is in common use in defining the relation of the ore-plane to the horizon ; the latter indicates the posture of the ore-body as it inclines east or west from its position at the opening of the mine. IN a communication to this Institute at the Baltimore meeting, February, 1879,* on the "Determination of Silicon in Pig Iron and Steel," the method recommended was the treatment of the metal with nitric acid until action had ceased, and then evaporating with sulphuric acid until the nitric acid was nearly or quite driven off After filtration of the siliceous and carbonaceous residue, and washing with hot water and hydrochloric acid, a silica was obtained, on ignition, which was quite pure. ASARCO's copper smelter at Hayden, Arizona has been upgraded to meet the increasing Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) environmental standards. Fortunately, means were found to accomplish these standards and provide for more efficient operations. With the adaptation of oxygen flash smelting and other related operations at Hayden, ASARCO has turned to the use of minicomputers and microprocessors for inter-plant communications and local area process control. The applications of distributive and computer controls to the plant operations at the Hayden smelter are discussed in this paper.

Abstract-Lead cake, a zinc smelter flue dust residue, consists primarily of lead sulfate. Characteristic properties of lead cake were determined in order to aid the understanding of reaction mechanisms involved in bismuth removal from lead cake by sulfuric acid digestion. Sp gr (specific gravity) measurements, surface area measurements, and photomicrographs revealed that the particles of lead cake are quite porous and seem to consist of an agglomeration of submicron grains (0.4 pm) fused together in a manner similar to cement clinker. Analysis of experimental rate data, which was independent of particle size, indicates that the dissolution reaction involves two distinct, rate limiting steps. The initial stage of reaction appears to be limited mainly by intergranular diffusion of the reactant, hydrogen ion, while the latter stage of reaction appears to be controlled by diffusion of soluble reaction products through the reaction product layer of the individual grains.

Consolidation Coal Co. is solving the abrasion problem and cutting maintenance costs at its Georgetown preparation plant by using ceramic alumina tiles from The Carborundum Co. The Georgetown complex handles the output of four deep mines and three strip mines in the Cadiz, Ohio, area-washing about 73 000 tons (80,000 st) weekly. Plant superintendent Duke Zinko is using wear-resistant Dura-frax® tiles in several applications, replacing wear plates, profile rubber, and other materials he has tried over the years.

Albert Ludwig Serlo was born February 14, 1824, at Crossen-on-the-Oder. After completing his school-studies and his training as a mining official, he received in 1851 an appointment as Royal Manager of salt-works (Salinenfactor) and member of the Administratioll of Salines at Konigsborn, near Unna, Westphalia. The issue of new regulations for the training of higher State officials in the Department of Mining, Metallurgy and Salines, led him to pass in 1856 a special examination for the rank of Assessor, in consequence of which he was called to Berlin, to serve for a few months as an assistant in the Ministry of Commerce, which had charge of mining, etc. In the same year he became Bergmeister and member of the mining administration at Bochum, Westphalia, and in 1858 Oberbergrath and member of the provincial administration, called the Oberbergamt, having its headquarters located at Dortmund. C. B. POST*—Just what are you showing that has not been shown by fixing the attention on molecular species and choosing the molecular species to give you a perfect solution? J. CHIPMAN (authors' reply)—In general a fairly satisfactory thermody-uamic treatment of slag-metal equilibria can be worked out on the basis of assumed molecular species in the slag. This has been the method used by Shenck and more recently by White. Winkler and I also used it in studying dephosphoriza-tion. Darken and Gurry found that it did not fit satisfactorily in the case of their data on iron oxides. The ionic formulas used here conform to the data much better and probably correspond somewhat more closely with the actual structure of the slags. C. B. POST—It does seem to be similar to you? J. CHIPMAN—It is alternative, and may lead to a more complete understanding. C. B. POST—Have you had a chance to talk to glass technologists on this? Have they been using this type of set-up for glass solutions? J. CHIPMAN—Yes, and the ionic formulas have given them a little better understanding of what liquid glass is like. C. B. POST—Nelson Taylor always said we were going- about slag reactions from the wrong viewpoint when using molecular species. Evidently the glass technologists use ionic species exclusively when dealing with liquid glass reactions. J. CHIPMAN—I agree that it seems more rational and more accurate to use ionic rather than molecular formulas. We should be cautious, however, and not suppose that we really understand the structure of a slag just because we are able to fit its reactions by ionic equations.
