IN view of the immense amount of attention that silicosis has received in this country in the past few years, it is timely to review the status of the silicosis problem at present. Who gets silicosis? The individual exposed to the inhalation of free silica dust. The effects upon the individual depend upon the amount of silica inhaled or, in other words, the severity of exposure, rather than upon any special variation or susceptibility among those exposed. A considerable amount of study has been given to determine what may be the role of predisposing causes in the development of silicosis. To men-tion one instance, at the Picher Clinic careful records were kept of all previous illnesses of the men examined as well as abnormalities present at the time of examination. Examinations of over 27,000 miners were made during the years the clinic was conducted under governmental auspices-a very fair sized sample. The general conclusions from all this work were that the incidence of silicosis is not appreciably influenced by racial, structural, or other inherent qualities; it is influenced by acquired defects-particularly as these affect the lungs. That is to say, the average run of human beings respond similarly to similar exposures to silica dust and those whose lungs are already impaired by tuberculosis or other pulmonary disease acquire silicosis more readily than those with healthy lungs. It may well be, and there is some clinical evidence in support, that negroes acquire silicosis more readily than do whites, but the infection factor has not been so carefully studied among negroes exposed to silica as it has among whites. We know that tubercle infection is more prev-alent among negroes than among whites. There may be other factors concerned in the development of silicosis in negroes as compared to whites, but there is not available information upon which to base posi-tive statements.

There was a time in the early history of man's use of metals when ore could be directly reduced to usable form by the use of fire. In those days the term "milling," or its many synonyms signifying the concentration of an ore's metallic con- tents before smelting, was little known. Centuries later, even before Agricola, or even before the Greek and Roman civilizations, simple means were found to concentrate metallic minerals that possessed special characteristics such as high specific gravity, hardness, magnetic response, or simple appearance. In this way, the art of milling became valuable to civilization because it eliminated most of the cost and labor of transporting and melting the worthless nonmetallic part of an ore. As civilization became more dependent upon metals and solid fuels, the art of ore dressing (one of our synonyms) increased in importance and complexity, until today it has become a gigantic industry firmly based upon a mature but rapidly advancing technology. Technically trained people are needed in growing numbers to serve this industry.

When a furnace-manager is '(blowing in," he generally has no time to consider the composition of the waste gas, and does not bother with it, except to take care that he does not get " gassed." Moreover, the analysis of the gases while the wood is still burning has not much to do with the economy of the normal working of the furnace; yet, on account of the deadly effects of the " blowing-in " gas when inhaled, and of its high explosive qualities, it is interesting to know its composition. Waterflooding operations in the Langston-Kleiner field. Young County, Tex., are described. Widespread application of formation fracturing has been practiced in both producing and injection wells. Field performance data arc cited which indicate than no detrimental effect on sweep efficiencies and that probable benefits in imectivily have resulted from the fracture treatments. I N T R O D U C I O N This paper is a report on a waterflood operation which is being carried out in the Lanpston-Kleiner field located in Young County, Tex. The oil reservoir aflected by this flood operation occurs in a Strawn sand member at an approximate depth of 3.550 ft subsurl'ace. The operators of' the project are Kleiner Estate. Turncr. Fiske. and West who are hereinafter collectively referred to as the Operators. Although the operation is unusual in several respects, the distinctive feature of this flood has been the widespread application of hydraulic formation fracturing treatments as a means to improve productivity and injectivity of the wells. It shall he the purpose of this paper to present basic information regarding the reservoir characteristics. op- craling practices, and waterflood behavior so that conclusions may be drawn concerning the effects which the fracture treatments have had on the performance of this water flood to datc. DEVELOP MENT Development of the 3,550 ft Strawn sand reservoir occurred during 1951 and 1952. The early development occurred on the Langston and Davis leases which arc in the northern region of the Operators' holdings and the wells were drilled on 20-acre proration units according to the field rules. However, studies of the economics of this program. coupled with the decision to proceed with pressure maintenance by water injection. resulted in the adoption of wider spacing in the later stages of development. This variation in spacing is apparent upon inspection of Fig. I upon which only the 3,550-ft Strawn sand producing and injection wells have been located on the Operators' properties. The development to the north of the operators leases is Ihe Garvey Strawn field and that to the south is the Taylor Strawn field. It wits determined that unitization of the leases to he involved in the waterflood program was not feasihle. Consequently. a system of offset injection wells, or lease line injection wells, was adopted from place to place as required to protect correlative rights in the program. This resulted in a dispersed array of injection and producing wells with relatively close proximity of wells along lease line areas and wider spacing toward

THE relation between permeability and the size parameters of unconsolidated sand is approached by considering sands as logarithmic frequency distributions having the basic parameters mean size and standard deviation. Sieve separates were mixed in accordance with the normal logarithmic probability law, so that the mean and standard deviation could be varied at will. Experiments were conducted in which one parameter was kept fixed and the other varied; in this manner the dependence of permeability on the individual parameters was evaluated. It was found that permeability can be expressed as the product of a power function of the mean size and an exponential function of the standard deviation.

The Pachuca - Real del Monte district has produced about 46.6 kt (51,300 ton) Ag from subvolcanic vein deposits. Three types of wall rock alteration are spatially related to the veins: K-feldspar, propylitic, and phyllic. K-feldspar alteration occurs within veins; propylitic alteration occurs in fractured rocks between veins; and phyllic alteration occurs above veins. Concentrations of some trace elements in altered rocks relative to unaltered rocks are summarized below. [ ]

I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute to an interesting experiment, which may turn out to be an indication of a valuable improvement in the manufacture of steel. As the members are aware, the addition of ordinary spiegeleisen, in the open hearth or Bessemer converter, to a bath of decarbonized iron, has a twofold object,-the recarbonization of the bath to a desired degree, and the remedy of the red shortness otherwise found to be inevitable in the final product. This red shortness is ascribed to the presence of oxide of iron in the molten metal ; and it is supposed that the manganese of the spiegeleisen, uniting with the oxygen of such oxide, carries it into the slag. At the same time there is a small percentage of the manganese usually left in the cast steel, probably to the improvement of its quality. Whatever be the true explanation the effect of the manganese is acknowledged to be not only beneficial, but necessary. But the use of spiegeleisen containing high percentages of carbon limits the quantity that can be introduced, because the carbon must be limited if soft steel is desired. This inconvenience becomes so serious as to prevent the use of ordinary spiegeleisen in the manufacture of steel containing more than, say two-tenths per cent. of phosphorus; since the quality of the steel can be made tolerable only by reducing its contents of carbon in proportion as the

THIS paper describes the use of the magnetometer, under geological direction, in exploration of the Sudbury nickel district. The writer's experience at Falconbridge has led him to the belief that only through detailed work, and by careful correlation of both geological and geophysical results, can geophysical prospecting methods be applied successfully to mining exploration problems. It is hoped that the basic technique described in the paper will be found to have general application.

The eighth meeting of the St. Louis Section was held at the Mercantile Club on Apr. 15, 1918. ,, The meeting was preceded by a dinner, at which 51 members and guests were present, and at which T. T. Brewster presided. Bradley Stoughton, Secretary of the Institute, and Major J. R. Fordyce were the guests of the Section. A number' of the Joplin members were obliged to leave before the close of the dinner, in order to make train connections. The Vice, chairman, therefore, called on Victor Rakowsky, who brought a message of greeting from the Southwest district. At the close of the dinner, the Vice-chairman, T. T. Brewster, introduced Bradley Stoughton, who talked on various subjects of interest to members of the Institute, especially the affiliation of local sections with those of other national engineering societies. The minutes of previous meetings were read and approved-and-the Treasurer presented a financial report covering the previous year.

THAT the amount of deformation and annealing time influences the recrystallization temperature of cold-rolled copper has been well established. Evidence that the recrystallization temperature can be affected by the deformation texture has been reported by Brick and Williamson,% ho found that copper straight-cold-rolled to 99 pct reduction to produce one deformation texture and copper cross-cold-rolled to 99 pct reduction to produce a second and different deformation texture correspondingly recrystallized at different temperatures to different textures. The purpose of the present work was to study more thoroughly the effect of the deformation texture on the recrystallization of cold-rolled copper. Experimental Procedure The copper used in this investigation was commercial OFHC copper (nominally 99.985 pct Cu) in the form of 0.500-in. plate. Qualitative spectro-graphic analysis showed only a slight trace of iron and a trace of silver. No analysis was performed to determine the exact content of the iron and silver,

David H. Browne was born June 8, 1864; at Hollymount, County Mayo, Ireland. At the age of 16, after going through the Londonderry Academy; he came to this country, and entered the University of Michigan, where he was graduated in 1885. He began his scientific practice as chemist, under F. A. Emmerton, in the laboratory of the Joliet Steel Co., after which he served some time as chemist at the Ludington mine, Iron Mountain, Mich. But in 1888 he went back for a year to his alma mater as instructor in inorganic analysis. Those who knew him feel sure that he would have been an efficient and popular professor; but his ardent temperament could not brook the rnonotony and confinement of the class- room; and in 1899 he went to work at the Andrews and Hitchcock blast-furnaces, at Hubbard, Ohio, where he remained until 1891, when he entered as chemist the service of the newly organized Canadian Copper Co., operating in the Sudbury district, Canada. This was the beginning of his special professional life-work. For twenty-six years he devoted himself to the numerous and complex problems successively arising in connection with the metallurgical treatment of the nickel-copper ores of Sudbury. One of his notable achievements was the development of an electro-lytic process for the separation of nickel and copper in the ores referred to. This method was successfully employed for several years; but when the Canadian Copper Co. was absorbed by the International Nickel Co., the cheaper Orford process owned by the latter was substituted. . A still more permanently important piece of metallurgical progress credited to Mr. Browne was the successful firing of reverberatory smelting-furnaces with powdered coal-a measure which had been desired, dreamed and attempted by others, but which he was acknowledged as first to put in practice on a large scale. The Engineering and Mining Journal of April 7, 1917, says editorially of this improvement:
