FRENCH steel makers are ready to support the Schuman plan. Pierre Ricard, vice-president of the French Steel Chamber syndicate, announced the industry's readiness to cooperate with the plan, which is aimed toward giving Europe an integrated steel industry. Steel men appear to have decided in favor of the plan because of its promise to unify the continent. Behind approval is the emphasis placed by French steel plant operators on continuation of the Franco Saar economic union. The French have an, abiding fear of German steel production potential. France is currently producing at an annual rate of 11 million tons, while Western Germany is producing 15.5 million tons of steel. The Saar output is placed at 3 million tons. French industrialists feel that as long as the marriage of French and Saar steel production continues, France can compete reasonably well with Germany. If Saar production should suddenly become part of the Western Germany total, it could result in an unequal competitive situation, giving Germany a production level of 18.5 million tons of steel annually, or 60 pct more than France.

CHARLES WILLIAM HENRY KIRCHHOFF was born March 28, 1853, at San Francisco, Cal., where his father, Charles Kirchhoff, was at that time employed in the consular service of his native country, Germany. A few years later, the family moved to Hoboken, N. J., in the public schools of which city the son received his preliminary education, proceeding later to Germany, where he was graduated in 1874 as mining engineer and metallurgist at the Prussian Royal Mining Academy of Clausthal, in the Harz. Upon his return to the United States, he became chemist of the Delaware Lead Refinery at Philadelphia, and retained that position for three years. But in 1877 he began what was to be an almost uninterrupted life-long association with David Williams, the publisher of The Iron Age, of New York, who established in that year, and continued for a brief period, a journal entitled the Metallurgical Review, on the editorial staff of which Mr. Kirchhoff received a place. The enterprise was doubtless an attempt to cover a wide metallurgical field outside of that which properly belonged to The Iron Age. But it was soon abandoned, and Mr. Williams wisely concentrated his energies upon the older journal, which, under his vigorous and skillful management, and the labors of the able editors and correspondents whom lie selected, became one of the greatest institutions off its class in the world. From 1878 to 1881, Mr. Kirchhoff was assistant editor of The Iron Age. From 1881 to 1884, he was managing editor of the Engineering and Mining Journal; in 1884 he returned to The Iron Age, to become for five years its associate editor, and in 1889, on the retirement of James C. Bayles, editor-in-chief. This list of dates and employments, without further comment, sufficiently indicates, at least to the eye of an expert, that Mr. Kirchhoff had found his congenial career in trade journalism. His qualifications for this profession were somewhat exceptional. He possessed the scientific training, the knowledge of foreign languages and literatures, and the power of making and keeping friends, which enabled him to get early notice of technical novelties; he had the taste for statistics which made him both industrious and intelligent in their collection and use; and to these traits he added a mastery of the meaning of such accumulated data, and a

The results of two studies into the effects of undermining offshore room and pillar workings by longwall faces are presented. The first study indicated no potential instability from undermining one level of room and pillar workings. On the basis of this it was decided to undermine two levels of room and pillar workings, again monitoring pillar stability. The results showed no signs of increased instability.

The importance to the growing steel industry of the United States of a domestic supply of ferro-manganese or "spiegel" of a high grade, induces me to bring to your notice some details of the method by which a superior article is produced in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. At Reschitza, Hungary, and probably at Laibach also (the Krainische Industrie Gesellschaft), ferro-manganese is made in a blastfurnace, with charcoal as fuel, and limestone as the flux. The ore is a ferruginous mixture, containing about 37 per cent. of sesquioxide of manganese. It is silicious, and somewhat, resembles, in its appearance, the manganese ore from Red Island, in the Bay of San Francisco, California. It contains about 29 per cent. of silica and some alumina, shown by the subjoined analysis:

During the recent great depression in iron, little has been done in the magnetic separation of iron-ores; and previous to the present decade the art was in its infancy, so that there were few, if any, successful separators on the market, and but scanty practical data could be obtained as to the industry itself. Moreover, the recent development of the great Mesabi Bessemer beds, coincident with the intense depression in business, has discouraged active attempts to solve the problems presented in the crushing and separation of the refractory magnetites of the South. Experiments have been carried on, however, upon a practical scale in separating these ores magnetically, at the well-known Cranberry mines, in Mitchell county, N. C., with results which are encouraging. The magnetites of the Blue Ridge, in the South, have been known, and the soft ores of the region have been used in Catalan forges, since very early times. The original settlements in East Tennessee were made along the Watauga river by Daniel Boone, William Bean, John Sevier, and other stalwart pioneers; and this valley lies parallel with the " Cranberry " lead, which is undoubtedly the most celebrated and the most extensive deposit of workable magnetic ore in the Southern States. EARLY studies by Gough and sopwith' have shown that the fatigue resistance of certain metals increased when the test was carried out in a partial vacuum; lead showed this effect to a marked degree. This communication describes surface deformation differences between high-purity lead fatigued in air and in a vacuum of approximately 5 X l0-3 mm Hg. Both air and vacuum tests were carried out by the same alternating flexure machine at a frequency of 500 cpm. Flat cantilever-bend specimens with tapered sides were cut from strip, annealed at 100°C, and chemically polished.

MORE and more hydrocyclones are being installed in beneficiation plants. This recent rapid increase is of special interest in the history of beneficiation, since development of the hydro- cyclone appears to have swung in a circle. To avoid any chance of confusion, it would be well first to review the accepted definitions. The size of a cyclone is expressed as the diameter of the cylindrical section. Size of the inlet orifice- which may be circular, square, or rectangular- is expressed as a diameter, or as width and length, or as an area (in square inches). The angle of a cyclone is expressed as the total included angle. The overflow or finest classification fraction leaves the cyclone through the vortex finder. The underflow or coarsest classification fraction leaves through the apex opening.

his volume records the "clay symposium" that featured the geology side of the Annual Meeting of the Institute at St. Louis, February 19-22, 1951. The symposium consisted of four sessions held under the joint sponsorship of the Geology Subdivision and the Industrial Minerals Division AIME and the Society of Economic Geologists. Its main purpose was to define or outline certain problems of clay and laterite genesis, and the papers herein, which were presented at the first three sessions, deal for the most part with individual deposits or special problems. The fourth session was a seminar concerned almost wholly with a discussion of "problems." The discussion follows the papers in the volume. The clay symposium was not the work of an appointed committee. It was thought up and inspired by John J. Collins, who so ably supervised and co- ordinated the mining, geology, and geophysics program for the 1950 annual meeting of the Institute. After requesting Dr. A. F. Frederickson to get material together on clay and laterites for the St. Louis meeting, Mr. Collins visited Dr. Frederickson and discussed this project with him in greater detail. By that time their interest and enthusiasm had spread to others in the field. The Geology Subdivision, the Industrial Minerals Division, and the Society of Economic Geologists by common consent turned over the organization of the program to Dr. Frederickson. Mr. Collins continued in active touch with Dr. Frederickson and gave him every assistance. Dr. E. C. Harder and Dr. W. D. Keller read all the material comprising the symposium, and their comment was made available to Dr. Frederickson, who did much to put papers and discussion in final shape for publication. To the Karl Eilers Memorial Fund--one of the Funds that enables the Institute to publish books of this kind, to the authors of the various papers, to the contributors to the discussion, and to Messrs. Collins and Frederickson the Institute and readers of this book are indebted.

Nearly all men are too busy with their own affairs to keep informed of the progress in other lines. From time to time we read statistics showing the development in some industry that astonish us; but the feeling of surprise soon fades: to be followed by others that likewise pass away. A short resume of what has been done in one line may be of interest. Down to late in the fifties the ore-product of Lake Superior mas handled over a mule-tram-road to Marquette; now the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic, the Chicago and Northwestern, the Wisconsin Central, the Duluth, Superior and Western, the Duluth, Mesabi and Northern, the Duluth and Iron Range and the Lake Superior and Ishpeming railroads serve the shippers. Down to nearly 1870 a 700-ton ship was an enormous craft, the loading of which required two days; the unloading being seldom accomplished in that time. In 1871 the largest ore-barge carried 1050 toils and made twelve trips per season. Now the cargoes reach 5000 tons, the loading requiring less than three hours, and the unloading ten hours. Now the mines cover more land than was familiar to even the " timber-cruiser " when the Jackson mine was opened. The annual shipments have grown from a few thousand to 10,000,000 tons, and the ability of the mines to produce is not taxed. Lake-freights are at one-eighth, and rail-freights at one-quarter, of early prices. The deeper waterways, commodious locks and large ships of to-day are in a greater measure due to the movement of ore than to any other cause. Great savings have been made in each detail of each department. The only item of cost that has not been lessened, I am glad to say, is the money paid to men. SINCE slag is a necessary product of the reactive oxygen additions necessary to the present-clay quality steelmaking, the study of the control of its volume is being attempted. With other varying factors that may affect the volume of slag kept as nearly constant as possible, the object of this investigation is to determine what effect the one factor of varying the amounts of iron-ore additions and the time of the additions may have upon the volume of slag in producing an acid electric steel heat.
