(communication to the Secretary*):—On close examination I think it will be found that the evidence by which Mr. Corson claims to have shown the inaccuracy of a statement I made a few years ago, is far from convincing. This statement is: "Hot work as such has no influence upon the structure of the metal. Indirectly, however, by retarding crystallization until a lower temperature is reached, it may influence its structure most decidedly ; but the same results could be accomplished by heat treatment alone, i.e., by re-heating the unworked metal to the temperature from which the worked piece was allowed to cool undisturbedly." Of the two pieces of steel tested by Mr. Corson, one was worked and finished at a a cherry-red" and the other reheated to a cherry-red, and the assumption was made that in both cases the temperature was about 715' C., although no pyrometric device was used to record it. As far as rapid determination of oxygen in liquid steel by means of a galvanic cell is concerned, I should like to summarize in a few words the activities of Centre de Recherches Metallurgigues (CRM) in Belgium. This work has been conducted both in a laboratory (Tammann and Induction furnaces) as well as on an industrial scale (converter and ladle). The galvanic cells developed by CRM are of two kinds: one with an air reference and one with a solid reference. As far as galvanic cells with air reference are concerned, we have tested numerous solid electrolytes (zirconia, spinel, and alumina). We finally chose zirconia sheathed with quartz. In order to be in a position to accurately determine the time when thermal equilibrium is reached, it was deemed useful to fit the galvanic cell with a Pt/Pt, Rh thermocouple, so as to follow the temperature variations at the interface of the solid electrolyte, until the temperature becomes equal to that of the bath. In actual fact the solution is highly interesting since it is possible to determine both the oxygen activity and the temperature of the bath with a single cell.

The importance of the conservation of the waste heat contained in copper reverberatory furnace gases was realized very early by those in charge of operation at Anaconda. The first attempt to utilize it was in preheating the air used for combustion of the coal. This was done by forcing the air through ducts surrounding the flue-gas downtake and continued down beneath the furnace hearth to the firebox. Any small advantage gained by the heat transferred from the flue gases was more than offset by the losses sustained in cooling the hearth, therefore this process, after several trials, was soon discarded. It was first used at the Old Works as early as 1893 and again for a comparatively short time on the original furnaces at the Washoe smelter, or present works. Water-tube boilers came into general use very rapidly after 1890. Their adaptability for waste-heat steam generation, as well as the saving to be effected by the production of cheap steam from this source, was soon recognized. The first waste-heat boiler to be used in connection with a matte furnace at Anaconda was installed in September, 1900, at the "Old Lower Works." It consisted of a 100-hp. "Cook," vertical water-tube boiler. This boiler had 65 small perpendicular tubes arranged in concentric circles around a 10-in. tube in the center. These tubes were expanded into 4 ft. 4 in. inside diameter cylindrical steel top and bottom drums which served as the steam and mud drums respectively. This boiler was set in a cylindrical brick housing into which the furnace gases entered just above the mud drum and thence circulated upward around the tubes and steam drum to the stack. This installation proved unsatisfactory, presumably on account of difficulty with dust, and was soon abandoned. However, the possibilities for steam generation were undoubtedly encouraging for shortly afterwards (December, 1900) a 300-hp. Stirling boiler was installed, to be followed by two more in the spring of 1901. The choice of the Stirling type of boiler for application to copper reverberatory furnaces was particularly fortunate, as the arrangement of the tubes appears to combine to a great extent the maximum contact of the gases with the heating surfaces of the boiler and at the same time

A party of 15 students and, instructors is visiting the Bunker Hill and Sullivan mine, mill and smelter at Kellogg, and several mines and mills in the neighborhood of Wallace and Mullan.

F. McMillan Stanton was born in New York City on May 23, 1865, the son of an English father and of a mother whose family was linked with that of Peter Stuyvesant. Mr. Stanton took his degree from the School of Mines of Columbia University in 1887, worked for two years as an assayer and surveyor and then went into the mining field on his own account. After a few years, he was offered a position with the Atlantic Mining Co., and began the work which was to continue with marked success for twenty-three years. In 1910, Mr. Stanton retired and went to Europe for a rest. Upon his return in 1914, he was elected treasurer and director of the Mohawk Mining Co., the Wolverine Copper Mining Co. and the Michigan Copper Mining Co., to which group was later added the White Pine Extension, Copper Co., and continued to serve these companies until the time of his death, Sept. 12, 1916.

The oil shales located in the Appalachian Basin cover an eight-state area of the eastern US and are referred to as Devonian (black) shales. These shales have been exploited for their gas potential for several years. The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) has conducted research since 1972 on the production of shale oil from the Devonian shales. This resulted in the development of the HYTORT process. This process demonstrated that the yield from the Eastern oil shales can be greater than the value indicated by the Fischer assay method. IGT estimates that 67 Gm3 (423 billion bbl) of oil could be recovered by HYTORT processing of surface minable eastern US shales. Recently, American Syncrude Corp. and Southern Pacific Petroleum NL have proposed oil shale projects in Kentucky. This paper will describe the surface mining and retorting techniques that have been studied for exploitation of the Devonian shales, and enumerate the problems that have to be overcome before commercial production can be realized.

The 38 companies listed below are those substantially engaged in the mining of metals, non- metals, or coal which appeared among the country's top 500 (on the basis of sales volume) listed in the July 1966 issue of Fortune. General Motors, with $20.7 billion in sales, heads the entire list, and a prominent member of the mining industry, Island Creek Coal, occupies the 500th spot with sales of $109.6 million. The lists of "industry medians" following mining's "Top 38" reveal how well the mining industry fared in 1965 in various salient categories of business performance.

Frank Firmstone was born Aug. 29, 1846, at Glendon Iron Works, near Easton, Pa., the residence of his father, William Firmstone, one of the pioneers of the anthracite-iron business. After preliminary school education at Easton, Pa., he attended the Saunders Military Academy in Philadelphia and subsequently entered the Polytechnic College of Pennsylvania, where he was graduated as Mining Engineer in 1865, at the age of nineteen. In 1865 and 1866, he was employed in railroad surveying. In January, 1867, he became draftsman and in 1869, assistant manager of the Glendon Iron Works, of which his father was manager until his death in 1875, when the son practically succeeded to that position, becoming formally in January, 1877, and remaining until February, 1887, the manager of the works and business agent of the Glendon Iron Company. In February, 1889, he became President of the Cranberry Iron and Coal Company, and held that position until November, 1897. He was a director of the Longdale Iron Company, Longdale, Va., from its organizationin 1870 until its dissolution in 1911. With the termination of this official responsibility, Mr. Firmstone retired from active business, although he continued to maintain an intelligent interest, and to play a helpful part, in the scientific progress of the iron industry, in which he had been a leader.

Anticipating the increasing importance of establishing working conditions on a scientific basis, the Department of Labor created the Working Conditions Service. This service is distinct from that performed by the Mediation and Conciliation branch, which deals with working conditions and industrial relations as controversial issues between employers and employees. The work of the Service is conducted through three coordinated divisions; Division of Industrial Hygiene and Medicine, Division of Labor Administration, and Division of Safety Engineering. The Division of Industrial Hygiene and Medicine will develop standards of sanitation and medical practice in industries. The personnel of this Division is detailed from the United States Public Health Service. The Division of Labor Administration will advise employers as to employment systems and labor management policies, and assist in putting into operation standard policies.
