NO slackening of research and development in the physical metallurgy of iron and steel was evident in 1943-our second year since Pearl Harbor. Of course, many of the achievements were of a military nature, and could not be reviewed here even if they were known to the authors. It is an open secret that far-reaching investi¬gations have been undertaken in governmental, industrial, and university laboratories, and it is strongly hoped that much of this work will be brought to light when peace comes. However, despite the metallurgist's wartime assignments and the necessary restrictions on his reports he has still managed to publish substantial contributions to the knowledge of iron and steel. This has been particularly true in the United States; foreign papers have been too uncertain in their arrival to permit a comprehensive appraisal of developments abroad.

Use of clay-working machinery in the metallurgical industry is by no means new. Extrusion- agglomeration as a basic operation in the non-ferrous field has a history of more than 50 years. This article advocates using the technique in the ferrous field where it might serve a useful purpose in today's operations. Many of the processes involved in production of iron ores result in fine powders, with a considerable percentage running finer than 200 mesh. In many instances, mining and related processing operations are located far from furnace operations. Shipping the powdered ore is impractical since handling losses and furnace losses from dusting would be excessive and powdered material must be agglomerated. The agglomerate must withstand the handling involved in transportation and here the continuous pugmill-extruder can be used to form a strong dense product.

Discussion of the paper of W. G. MATTESON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1918, and printed in Bulletin No. 134, February, 1915, pp. 429 to 468. WILLIAM KENNEDY, Fort Worth, Tex. (written discussion*). -In his discussion of this paper, Mr. Sherburne Rogers offers voluminous figures to show that the salt forming the. cores of the various domes could not have been derived from sea water, and gives as an illustration the immense quantity of water required to form the salt found in the Humble dome. He refers to the theory advanced by Van der Gracht apparently in support of this contention, and claims to have disposed of the views held by some that the domes were, in a great measure, formed by lateral secretion. Van der Gracht says the immense salt plugs found throughout North Germany and other countries in that region were apparently formed by orogenic movements acting upon what he calls the Mother Bed of Salt, which he gives a thickness of about 1000 ft., and an extent of several thousand square miles. The age of this "mother bed" is given as Permian. Harris, in addition to his growing-crystal theory, also says probably a great portion of the salt found in the Coastal dories may have been derived from the salt water of Permian time. Both of these theories require an abundance of water, and consequently oppose Mr. Rogers' idea that the immensity of water required disproves the formation of the salt from that source. I do not suppose, however, that either Van der Gracht or Harris absolutely limits his view to the Permian as being the only source from which the salt could have come, but would probably agree to consider any other age as being the beginning. Although the Permian is very strongly represented throughout North Texas, we have none anywhere throughout the region from which the salt may be considered as having been derived. Many deep wells have been drilled along the eastern outcropping of the Carboniferous and each has passed directly from Cretaceous to Carboniferous formations. Thus we may eliminate the Permian as a source of salt in this region. But, although the Permian may be absent, we have with us the Carboniferous with probably a thickness of 3000 to 4000 ft., and something like 3000 ft. of Cretaceous, to say nothing of approximately 8000 ft. of Tertiary and later beds, all of which, if we may judge by the quantity and density of the waters obtained from the numerous wells drilled, carry immense quantities

E. L. Howard (Chief Testing Engineer, Pacific Cement & Aggregates, Inc., San Francisco, Calif.) We have made concrete with all the materials mentioned by Mr. Barneyback, including sawdust. He has highlighted the principal problems and effects found when these light materials are used as concrete aggregate. We can only agree with the inter-relationship he has emphasized between grading, specific gravity and unit weight. Uniformity in these characteristics helps to assure good concrete. Mr. Barneyback says the design of lightweight concrete mixtures "is a complete mystery to most engineers". He is wholly right in his evaluation of our ability generally to put together a concrete using lightweight aggregate. A study of the references he has appended will yield little comfort in the matter of proportioning. Much remains to be done in this area of concrete. We believe Mr. Barneyback has treated the subject, though briefly, in an excellent manner.

I DESIRE to put on record a fact in relation to the effect of manganese on pig iron which I have never seen in print, and which may, perhaps, not have been observed by anyone except myself. In 1875, while experimenting on the production of ferromanganese in a blast furnace, I had burdened the furnace with a charge which I calculated would produce a 15-per cent spiegel. The furnace was very hot, having been running for a couple of days on a very light burden, and making a burnt iron, preparatory to the experiment I proposed to make to produce a high grade of spiegel. I calculated that the charge would begin to work in the furnace in about twelve hours after it was put on. After the lapse of that time I commenced to watch the furnace carefully, but found little or no. change in the appearance of the metal, although there was a very decided change in the cinder, showing that the manganese ore had come in work. The iron was quite gray and very tough. The character of the cinder was good for a spiegel cinder, and I could not imagine where the manganese was going to, as it (lid not appear to be in either metal or cinder in anything like the quantity indicated by the charge. The next morning things were still in, the same condition. The furnace was very hot, the cinder good, and the iron very gray. I was then sorely puzzled. I had never heard of a gray iron with over 4 or 5 per cent, of manganese, and had no notion that an iron with more manganese could be gray and tough. With great difficulty a piece for chemical test was broken from a pig. Not less than a hundred blows from a heavy sledge were required to break it off I took the specimen to the shop and directed that some borings from it should be brought to the laboratory, as soon as possible, whither I myself at once repaired -to put things in readiness for a rapid manganese determination. In about half an hour the machinist came in with the iron specimen in one hand and about, a dozen blunted and broken steel drills in the other, saying that it was impossible to drill the iron. There were several little depressions in the iron, which was malleable enough to be indented by the point of the drill, but not a chip had been cut from it. The death of Privy Councilor Bruno Kerl, on March 25, 1905, terminated a distinguished and useful career. Bruno Kerl was born March 24, 1824, at St. Andreasberg in the Harz, and entered in 1840 the mining school of Claus-thal, where he studied for three years, working at the same time in the mines and stamp-mills. After an additional year of practice in the silver-reduction and iron-works of the Upper Harz, he passed his examination as a metallurgical graduate, and studied for a gear at Göttingen under Wöhler in chemistry, Hausmann in mineralogy, and eminent teachers in other branches. In 1846 he was employed at the Oker works, but very soon left this post, to become a tutor in chemistry, metallurgy, etc., at Clausthal, where he continued to labor until 1867. During this period the Clausthal school became a completely equipped Mining Academy, and Kerl was made in 1862 a full professor. Meanwhile, in addition to the work of instruction, he discharged, simultaneously or successively, the duties of many responsible official positions in the Royal Hanoverian administra-

George Ellery Hale, Director of the Mount Wilson Observatory and Foreign Secretary of the National Academy of Sciences, who has been for the last ten years a Correspondent of the Academie des Sciences, Institut de France, has received the unusual honor of election as Associe Etranger, taking the place of Adolph von Baeyer, declared vacant by the Academy. The Foreign Associates are limited to twelve, and the high distinction has been held by only two Americans-Simon Newcomb and Alexander Agassiz. The National Research Council upon the presentation and acceptance of. Dr. Hale's resignation as its Chairman and the election of James R. Angell as his successor, created and bestowed in perpetuity upon Dr. Hale the title of Honorary Chairman in recognition of his services to the National Research Council and to Science and Research by indefatigable efforts that have contributed so largely to the organization of science for the assistance of the Government during the war, and the augmentation of the resources of the United States through the newly intensive cultivation of research in the reconstruction and peace periods that follow.

Engineering Council has been elected to membership in the Chamber of Commerce of the United States. Its representative will be Mr. Harold W. Buck, of Viele, Blackwell & Buck, Consulting Engineers, New York City, Past-president of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, his alternate being Mr. Irving E. Moultrop, of the Edison Electric Illum-inating Co., Boston, member of American Society of Mechanical Engin-eers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers. The Chamber of Commerce of the United States was formed in 1912 and now consists of more than 1100 organizations in every state of the union, in the out-lying possessions, and of all the principal American chambers of commerce abroad. One of the chief aims is to obtain the best business thought on national questions that concern business. Members of the National Chamber have the privilege of using all the facilities of the Chamber's offices in Washington when information is desired.
