Preliminary separation of precious metals by flotation can offer a simplification of the conventional method of treatment of anode slimes. Laboratory flotation experiments show that rich gold and silver concentrate can be obtained with excellent recoveries.

Sterry Hunt* was a student of chemistry who, by his investigations into the properties of the elementary bodies, had assisted emineiltly in the progress of the technical arts, and, more than any American of his generation, had helped to lay the foundations of chemical geology. ATER the preliminary registration at which approximately 380 members and guests were registered, the 138th meeting of the Institute was opened in the Concert Room of the Palace Hotel. E. A. Hersam, chairman of the San Francisco Section, voiced a brief welcome and introduced F. W. Bradley, president of the Institute, who presided over the remainder of the morning session. After expressing the welcome of the Institute to the members and guests, he read a telegram from Secretary H. Foster Bain, extending the best wishes of the eastern staff and members for a successful meeting. He next introduced Theodore J. Hoover, dean of the School of Engineering, Stanford University, who read an address by the Secretary of the Interior, Ray Lyman Wilbur, briefly outlining California's part in the mining industry and giving the welcome of California to this meeting of the Institute.

Foster Bain, Who has gone to London to assume the editorship of the Mining Magazine, was tendered a farewell dinner by the San Francisco Sections of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and the Engineers' Club, on the evening of Mar. 9, 1915, at the Hotel Bellevue, San Francisco, 85 members being present. George H. Clevenger acted as Toastmaster and the following toasts were responded to: Bain and the Mining Industry, E. H. Benjamin. Bain, the Geologist, A. C. Lawson. Bain, the Man, F. W. Bradley. Bain, the Friend, C. W. Merrill. Bain, the Schoolboy, C.. F. Tolman. The Frontispiece and Flow sheet from the souvenir program, designed by James C. Ray, Secretary of the Section, are reproduced herewith.
