We have seen that the first coal development in Pennsylvania was in the Pittsburgh bed in the southwestern corner of the state. The next mining, in point of time, was done in Clearfield County along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, but the amount of mining done was quite small for a number of years and was soon exceeded by that from the area north of the Susquehanna River in Tioga, Bradford and Lycoming Counties, which will be considered now. It is claimed that coal was first noticed in Tioga County, in 1792, by Robert and Benjamin Patterson who were leading a party of settlers from Williamsport to southern New York, and while clearing a road near the site of Blossburg, found coal, which was said to be good. About 1815 David Clemons made an arrangement with Aaron Bloss, owner of the land, to work some of the coal and hauled the first load down the river to Painted Post, N. Y., as there were no available markets in his own state. Smiths found it an excellent fuel and apparently he found a ready market for the small amount he could transport by wagons and sleighs. As wood began to become scarce around the towns in New York State, the knowledge of the coal deposits in the mountains at the head of the Tioga River attracted attention to the field and the necessity, for means of transportation from it. Some coal had been floated down the river, but navigation was uncertain and dangerous. In 1827 an iron plant was built, and to ship its product and coal, it was proposed to build a canal along the river to reach Corning, N. Y. A company had been chartered in 1826 in Pennsylvania to "make a navigable canal or slack-water navigation" to the state line and coal was shipped on rafts of logs, both being sold, during highwater. In 1828 the company was authorized to build a railroad instead of a canal, and in September 1840, the railroad was completed from Corning to Blossburg.1 That some coal from Pennsylvania had been reaching southern New York towns prior to the improved means of transport is shown by the report of a committee to the New York Assembly: "the bituminous coal has been brought to us either from Great Britain or from that part of our own country which borders on, and lies west and south of the Susquehan-

Generalizations therefore are made whenever possible and not always is the source of the information meticulously cited. The United Nations regularly publishes trade data on mineral commodities. E. J. Gealy, and C. L Kimbell, of the U S Bureau of Mines (USBM), work with these data and estimate that they cover approximately 78% of total mineral commodities traded. In addition the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) publishes analyses of certain trade data The most complete report of production and trade in minerals 1s probably the international volume of the U.S. Bureau of Mines Yearbook The latest available edition is for 1968, and some of the data in this edition cover only as late as 1967. THE NATURE AND SCOPE OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE The two and a half decades since World War II have witnessed an unprecedented growth international commerce The end of the war found the world economy seriously crippled. Many countries had suffered severe war damage; international trade was disrupted and nations had to resort to exchange controls and bilateral trading arrangements. The postwar recovery, however, was remarkably rapid Within two decades, world Income more than doubled, and world trade which was less than $60 billion in 1948 exceeded $200 billion in 1968, 8 and reached $278 billion in 1970.18 The growing world trade contributed to world prosperity which in turn fostered growth of trade. This dramatic growth of international commerce was made possible by the progressive liberalization of trade and capital movements by the major trading nations of the world which began immediately after the War and has not yet completely lost its steam. The anelastic behavior of Ni-C alloys of nominal 0.5 wt pct C has been determined over a wide temperature range. The most prominent damping effect, that due to the presence of C-C pairs, was measured both above and below the Curie temperature. The effect on diffusion of the C-C pairs by magnetic spin ordering is deduced to be very small. The diffusion coefficient for C-C pairs in nickel is given by the expression ThE solid-state diffusion of both interstitial and sub-stitutional solutes in ferromagnetic solvents has been the subject of a number of investigations. Measurements of the self-diffusion of iron,"' the diffusion of nickel1,4 gold,"1 and cobalt4 into iron, the diffusion of vanadium in an Fe-V alloy,' and the diffusion of cobalt and nickel in Co-Ni alloys9 show an unusual behavior. In both the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic regions, far removed from the Curie temperature, the diffusion coefficient, D, obeys an Arrhenius relation. However, in the ferromagnetic region D is markedly lower than would be expected from an extrapolation of D from the paramagnetic region; this results in an increase in the activation energy in the ferromagnetic region. The cause of this effect for self- and substitutional diffusion is uncertain. Since substitutional diffusion is presumed to proceed by the vacancy mechanism, it has been variously suggested that the increase in activation energy below the Curie temperature is due to one of the following causes: 1) an increase in the energy of formation of a vacancy because of local demagnetization around the vacancy,2,3 2) a decrease in vacancy mobility in the ferromagnetic state,' or 3) an effect on the entropy of motion of a vacancy in the ferromagnetic state.5 Quite another explanation for the observed effect has been proposed by Borg.7 The diffusion coefficient is a function of the elastic constants of a metal. Since the temperature dependence of the elastic constants often changes at the Curie temperature, the temperature dependence of D might be expected to undergo a universal change in the vicinity of the Curie temperature. The magnitude of the change in D would, of course, depend on the magnitude of the change in the elastic constants. One might attempt to differentiate between vacancy effects and elastic effects by making measurements on interstitial alloys, in which vacancy effects play no role. Some measurements of this type have been made; this paper reports additional observations. Measurements of the diffusion of carbon in a Fe by a tracer technique8 and of the diffusion of carbon in a Co and in Co-Fe alloys by a decarburization method9 reveal a small effect, if any, on D of the magnetic change at the Curie temperature. If the effect of spin ordering is only to alter the parameters controlling formation or mobility of a vacancy, interstitial diffusion should indeed remain unchanged through the magnetic transition, as these measurements imply.

IN 1923, when the writer began his studies in metallurgy, he came upon an article by Professor Honda on the, Equilibrium Diagram of the Iron-carbon System, 1 which made a profound impression on him. What interested him most was this sentence: "In the recent diagram of the iron-carbon system, the solidus is usually shown as a curve bending considerably downward. But it can be shown by thermodynamics that if the liquidus is straight or slightly curved, the same must also be true for the solidus. Hence, in my constitutional diagram, the lower portion of the solidus is slightly bent upward." Ever since then the writer has been interested in thermodynamics, especially chemical thermodynamics. The applications of thermo-dynamics to the metallic systems have been, in the writer's opinion, sadly neglected, although we continually use the phase rule in our study of equilibria in the liquid and solid states of metallic alloys. Many investigators, among whom may be mentioned Heycock and Neville, and s Honda and his coworkers, have applied the simple Raoult-van't Hoff law of depression of freezing point, mainly to determine the heat of fusion, but no attempt has been made to investigate the applicability of the thermo-dynamic laws of solution (as opposed to the laws of solution derived from other sources) to metallic systems" showing either limited or complete solid solutions. Perhaps the reason for this neglect is that until recently there have been so few reliable data on the solidus, which is much more difficult to determine than the liquidus. The writer has under way at the present time an investigation of a number of systems, the solidi of which have been more or less reliably determined. Recently, the writer has not only shown the valid applicability of the thermodynamic laws of solution as applied to the system antimony-bismuth but has also suggested a method of attacking problems involving complete and incomplete equilibria.2 In the present paper, the same method of approach is employed. U. S. mining trends for 1956 continued steadily U+ S. uphill, technique and equipment advanced with the pull, and exploration and development of once mined districts attracted more attention than new areas. Expansion of the Ambrosia Lake district in New Mexico more than doubled known uranium ore reserves, and production began from several of the large new ore discoveries. In Canada the up trend was more spectacular, especially in exploration and development. To combat increasing problems arising from high labor costs, taxes, low grade orebodies, and dwindling discoveries, manufacturers and mining companies have continued to introduce new techniques and new products-reamer bits for enlarging small holes drilled by jacklegs, whup d'whups for drift mucking, Cryderman machines and over-the-head small crawler-type machines for shaft mucking, the 20-ton TL 220 four-wheeled tractor trailer unit for underground haulage, inertia-type dust collectors, roof bolting in conjunction with chain link fencing for wall support, wooden roof bolting using compression support of ground for wall support, and new one-use carbide bits.

[ ] DISCUSSION F A LORIA*-The method of testing gun steel for resistance to surface cracking described in this paper was restricted to the examination of small, rod-shaped specimens The writer would like to point out the importance of other factors in producing defects in forged and bored gun tubes which would not be apparent in this investigation because of the nature of )he test Actual section size would accentuate the possibility of internal wall (bore) defects arising from unequal expansion between the internal and external wall surfaces on firing, resulting in internal tearing Checks and tears on the inside walls arise from internal tensions and nonuniformity on cooling, but the internal tearing can be reduced by using alloys of low expansion and of good thermal conductivity so as to reduce the difference between the outer and inner wall surfaces Also, the possibility of the location of inclusion segregates within a machined gun tube becomes more likely than in a small test specimen The effect of these nonmetallics on gun life and performance is evident when one realizes that the inclusions are soft yet brittle They reduce the amount of plastic deformation which can take place before cohesive failure occurs Once localized fracture has occurred at the position of a chain of these inclusions, a sharp notch (crack) is formed which produces stress conditions more favorable to cohesive failure than to plastic deformation These cracks aid erosion by providing channelways for the explosive gases, eventually leading to the tearing out or spalling of blocks of metal Oxidation of the surface may be partly responsible for the change in the surface of gun steel during firing observed by the author The appearance of burn on the surface is an indication that high temperatures were reached on firing, resulting in a slight oxidation of the surface Since the color of the oxidized film depends on both temperature and time, a higher temperature is required for a given color to form when it is caused by explosive heat, which acts for only an extremely short time at a given spot, than when it is caused by ordinary tempering The cross section of the gun steel specimen, Fig 16, illustrates that the repeated firing temperatures were high enough to cause

The creep properties of metals have assumed increasing importance in recent years and many investigations have been made on various phases of the problem. In the past year the annual lectures of the Institute of Metals Division1 and the Iron and Steel Division2 were concerned with this subject, and are excellent reviews. For many years the creep properties of lead and lead alloys have been investigated at the Central Research Laboratories of the American Smelting and Refining Co., and it is hoped that the present paper will contribute knowledge of some of the factors that influence creep. Lead, being a metal that recrys-tallizes readily at room temperature, is an excellent material upon which to investigate creep phenomena because of the simplicity of the apparatus needed, and it might be expected that results would apply to some extent to elevated-temperature tests of other metals. Material The creep tests of this investigation were all made on high-purity lead (99.9998+ Pb) in which the only impurity that could be detected by spectrographic and chemical means was approximately 0.0001 per cent Fe. Flat strips, 0.750 in. wide by 0. 100 in. thick, were prepared by extruding 2-in. dia. cast billets at a temperature of 250°C. This gave a material of 2 to 3 mm. average grain size with a tensile strength of j.400 lb. per sq. in. when tested at a straining rate of 5 per cent per minute. With this extremely soft material, great care was necessary in handling the specimens, to avoid distortion and subsequent recrystallization. The creep tests at 30°C. were conducted in a constant-temperature room, specially built for the purpose in the basement of an office building in which there was no moving machinery, and no vibration was detectable under the most severe conditions of shock in the adjacent surroundings. The room was well insulated and heated electrically, control being by means of a de Khotinsky regulator operating a relay. Maximum temperature variation over a period of several years has been ± 1/2°C. Specimens of the extruded strip, 16 in. long, were used for test purposes with no reduced gauge section, thus eliminating any distortion due to machining. The method of clamping and supporting the specimens is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. The gauge marker for the measurement of extension consisted of an aluminum strip, 0.050 in. thick by 0.75 in. wide, one end of which was ground and sanded to a precise knife-edge and fastened to the specimen by suitable pins. After the strip was fastened in place a fine scratch was inscribed just below the knife-edge by means of a sharp teasing needle. Just below this gauge scratch a short vertical mark was made so that the same point could be located and read each time. Several hundred specimens have been prepared by this method, and it was found that with experi-

The influence of austenite grain size upon the hardenability of steel is now fairly well understood; for a given austenite, increasing the grain size increases the depth of hardening, and, since the latter is related to the fundamental transformation behavior of austenite, it follows that austenite decomposition must, in general, be retarded by increasing grain size. To date, very little quantitative information bearing directly on the effect of austenite grain size upon the progress and result of isothermal transformation has been published. Davenport and Bain,' and Zimmerman, Aborn and Bain2 have shown that the transformation is definitely relarded in hypereutectoid plain carbon steels at temperatures near and above the upper region of rapid transformation (Ar') when the austenite grains are increased in size. More recently, Griffiths. Pfeil and Allen3 investigated the effect of a series of different heating (austenitizing) temperatures upon the progress of isothermal transformation at 1245°F. (675°C.) and 745ºF. (395°C.) in a medium carbon, low-alloy steel; while they reported no measurements of the austenite grain size, their results suggest that increase in grain size retards austenite transformation at 1245ºF. (675°C), but has no appreciable effect at 745°F (395°C.). The present paper deals with the results of a study of the isothermal transformation of austenite in a single commercial alloy steel in which a fine-grained or a coarsegrained state was induced by appropriate selection of austenitizing temperature. The data are presented in the form of isothermal transformation diagrams, which clearly show that coarsening the grains lessens the rate of transformation of austenite to proeutectoid ferrite and pearlite—that is, at temperature levels above about 1000°F. (540°C.)—but is without significant effect at lower temperatures where the transformation product is bainite or martensite. It is to he presumed that the foregoing statement would be valid, at least in principle, for many other grades of steel; it confirms again that the mechanism of transformation to a pearlitic structure is fundamentally different from that to an acicular structure. A number of related observations were made, which seem to throw some light on the transformation process as it takes place in alloy steels, particularly at temperature levels in the vicinity of 1000ºF. (540°C.), where the transition from lamellar to acicular structures occurs. These data are discussed briefly in the belief that they may lead to a clearer understanding of this aspect of the subject. Material and Experimental Procedure The material investigated was a cornmercial grade of S.A.E. 4140 steel, the composition of which was as follows: 0.37 per cent C, 0.77 per cent Mn, 0.98 per cent Cr and 0.21 per cent Mo. It was hot-rolled to a 1 1/8-in. round bar and normalized by air-cooling from 1800°F. (980°C.).

Structural similarities between the E, X, and iron carbides are illustrated. Experimental evidence regarding phase transformations occurring during ternpering reactions in finely divided carbides, thin-film carbides, and carbides which occur in steels is considered and possible mechanisms for the E — x and x — 9 transformations proposed. HOFER1 has shown that within the appropriate temperature ranges carbon monoxide will react with finely divided a iron to form either iron carbide or x iron carbide. He has shown that at an elevated temperature the E iron carbide will transform to the x iron carbide (Hagg carbide) which, upon further elevation of temperature, will transform to 9 iron carbide (cementite). Jack,2,3 using X-ray diffraction methods, has observed that during the tempering reactions occurring in steel the E iron carbide formed in the first stage of tempering passes into two-dimensional platelets of 0 iron carbide during the second stage of tempering. The three-dimensional form of the 0 carbide is formed during the third stage of tempering. Jack suggested2 that the two-dimensional platelets of 0 carbide could be related to the faulted x iron carbide. Okada and Arata4 investigated a Swedish steel containing 1.05 wt pct C and approximately 1.0 wt pct Mn using permeability measurements at low field strength. A Curie point of 360°C was observed in the quenched steel, which indicated the presence of E iron carbide. On tempering at 400°C the specimen developed a Curie point at 230°C, indicating the presence of x iron carbide, and on tempering at 700°C the specimen developed a Curie point at 190°C which was assigned to 0 iron carbide. The carbides were extracted electro-lytically and the use of X-ray diffraction techniques4r5 indicated the carbide with a Curie point of 230°C to be x iron carbide. The Curie points of the carbides are 10 to 22°C lower than the accepted values which is probably due to the presence of manganese in the carbides, since it has often been observed (e.g., Ref, 6) that a partial substitution of manganese for iron in cementite will lower the Curie point of this carbide. Hofer' summarizes additional evidence of the tempering reactions in steel in which E iron carbide, formed during the first stage of tempering, transforms to x iron carbide during the second stage of tempering. During the third stage of tempering, the x carbide disappears as the 0 carbide is formed. By carburizing thin iron films in a CO gas stream, ~a~akura' has been able to produce the E, X, and 0 iron carbides. He found that below 250°C the E iron carbide was formed; between 250" and 350°C the x iron carbide was formed and above 350°C the 0 iron carbide was formed. He has shown that the E iron carbide transforms to form x iron carbide at 380" to 400°C and that the x ir°n carbide transforms to form the 0 iron carbide at approximately 550" C; both of these phase transformations are irreversible. Hofer' presents a review of evidence to show that the sequence of reactions occurring during tempering processes subsequent to the formation of E iron carbide formed by the direct carburization of finely divided a iron is the same as the sequence of reactions which occur during the tempering processes subsequent to the formation of E iron carbide in steel during the first stage of tempering. It is evident from Nagakura's work that identical tempering reactions are found in thin films of iron which have been carburized to form iron carbide. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the structural similarities between the E, X, and 0 carbides and to suggest a possible mechanism by which regions of the E carbide, formed during the first stage of tempering, may transform to the x carbide during the second stage of tempering. For the finely divided or thin film carbides a mechanism will be proposed for the transformation of the x carbide to the 0 carbide during the third stage of tempering, although it will be suggested that there is evidence that such a transformation may not occur in steels. STRUCTURAL DATA OF THE E, X, AND 0 IRON CARBIDES € Iron Carbide. It is evident from X-ray diffractions and electron diffraction', investigations that the metal atoms in the E iron carbide form an hcp structure with lattice constants ah = 2.752A, ch = 4.3534, using electron diffraction, reports the lattice paramet$rs of the superlattice cell to be a = 4.767A, c = 4.354, c/a = 0.9134. He finds that the carbon atoms occupy the octahedral voids in the metal atom structure so as to form a hexagonal stacking sequence with its basal plane parallel to that of the metal atoms. Considerable long-range disorder occurs in the positioning of the carbon atoms, however, which is in agreement with the possible range of composition Fe2C-Fe3C discussed by Hofer.' Barton and ale" have made X-ray diffraction measurements on a sample of E iron carbide extracted from a catalyst in an organic process. Although there were few reflections recorded on the obtained X-ray powder diffraction pattern, they have proposed that the structure could belong to one of the three possible space groups p3m1, P63/mmc, or Pbcn if one assumed the composition to be Fe2C. Nagakura, using electron diffraction data, suggests a space group of P 6322 for a specimen of c iron carbide of apparent composition Fez.&. x Iron Carbide. A comprehensive report on extensive experimentation in degasification of the Pittsburgh Coal seam is presented. Detailed accounts of the procedures and results are given for permeability tests, vertical bore hole tests, measurement of gas flow from sealed drainage areas, horizontal rib hole tests, and water infusion tests. The removal of methane gas from coal seams in advance of mining is not a new idea with mining men—much attention has been given to the possibility for many years. In other parts of the world, a principal concern has been in the recovery and utilization of the gas and a number of successful projects have been developed in Europe and elsewhere. In this country, the principal motivation has been related to the safety aspect with some possible side benefits concerning costs and efficiency in mining as secondary objectives. To date, experimental work in this country has been largely or entirely exploratory to determine bed characteristics with respect to the liberation of combustible gases to investigate or establish the possibility of degasification in advance of mining and as an aid in projecting mine ventilation systems to provide for safe, effective and economical handling of combustible gases liberated during mining. With these objectives in mind, the School of Mines and Engineering Experiment Station at West Virginia University, in cooperation with the Christopher Coal Co. of Osage, W. Va., initiated some experimental work in May 1952 and the project has been more or less continuous since that time. The work has been centered entirely in mines of the cooperating company in Monongalia County, W. Va., and Greene County, Pa. LOCATION AND GENERAL CONDITIONS OF THE AREA The principal mining in the area involved is in the Pittsburgh coal seam which lies at the bottom of the Monongahela series of the Pennsylvanian. The Pittsburgh coal in the area is generally uniform in its structure and physical characteristics. The bed thickness averages about 7 to 8 ft and the coal has a characteristic blocky structure as the result of pronounced face cleats and definite, but somewhat less pronounced, butt cleavage. It is a medium volatile coal, averaging about 37 pct, and is marketed principally as a steam fuel and for metallurgical purposes. The Pittsburgh coal outcrops along the Monongahela River and dips gradually, but not uniformly, slightly north of west (about N75°W). The westward extensions of the bed, from the areas contiguous to the Monongahela River which have been heavily mined, constitute the principal reserves and are all well below drainage with the depth of cover increasing with the distance from the river. In general, with deeper cover, it may be expected that methane liberation will be more of a problem in future mining as compared to areas mined previously; therein lies the interest in possible de-gasification in advance of mining. Fig. 1 shows the Pittsburgh coal area in the vicinity of Morgantown in Monongalia County, W. Va., and Greene County, Pa., in which the experimental work discussed is located. Fig. 2 shows the contours on the Pittsburgh coal in the test area. It will be noted that the first two bore holes for the experiments were at the edge of a bench or terrace with considerable change in the gradient in the immediate vicinity of the test holes and that the same general condition applies to later test areas. Mining is intensively mechanized in the area and in the mines involved in the experimental work with corresponding rapid advance of working faces a typical characteristic. In the areas now mined the total methane liberation ranges from moderate to relatively heavy, but the actual face liberation is extremely variable and may range from practically

Wollastonite, named after William H. Wollaston, an English chemist, is a calcium metasilicate, CaSiO3; CaO: 48.30%, SiO2: 51.70%. It has a short history as an industrial mineral. The earliest production of wollastonite is reported to be from a deposit near Code Siding, located north of Randsburg, CA. At this locality small tonnages of wollastonite were quarried during 1933-34 and 1938-41, and processed into mineral wool. This operation was largely experimental and virtually no United States production was again reported until the 1950s when a large deposit near Willsboro, NY, was developed by the Cabot Corp. A processing plant was placed onstream in 1953, with nearly continuous production to date. It is currently operated by NYCO, a division of Processed Minerals, Inc. Since 1958, wollastonite deposits in the Little and Big Maria Mountains of Riverside County, and in the Panamint Range of Inyo County, both in California, have operated intermittently for production of both ornamental and commercial wollastonite. During 1980, the United States was the major producing country, furnishing about 75% of the world's output. Current production comes from Finland, Mexico, India, and Kenya. Small amounts have been shipped intermittently from the USSR, New Zealand, Republic of the Sudan, Republic of South Africa, and Namibia (South-West Africa). The principal use of wollastonite is in the manufacture of plastics. Other uses are for paints, ceramics, adhesives, fluxes, glazes, thermal insulation board, and refractory products. Mineralogy Pure wollastonite, CaSiO3, has the composition of 48.3% CaO and 51.7% SiO2. However, it is seldom found in the pure state due to the ease with which it takes into solution the metasilicates of manganese, magnesium, iron, and strontium. Predominantly, wollastonite occurs as a contact metamorphic deposit forming between limestones and igneous rocks. Commonly associated minerals are garnet, diopside, epidote, calcite, and quartz. It has a specific gravity of 2.8 to 3.0, and hardness of 4.5 to 5 on Mohs' scale. When pure, it has a brilliant white color, but with impurities it may be grayish or brownish. Luster is vitreous to pearly. Melting point of wollastonite is about 1540ºC. Wollastonite occurs in coarse-bladed masses, rarely showing good crystal form. It is usually acicular or fibrous, even in the smallest of particles. The most unique property of crushed and ground wollastonite is its cleavage. Fragments of crushed wollastonite tend to be needle-shaped, imparting a high strength, and this property is the basis for many of its uses. The fiber lengths are commonly in the ratio of 7 or 8 to 1, length to diameter. The average diameter of wollastonite is 3.5 µm. Some crystals of wollastonite fluoresce under short-wave or longwave ultraviolet light, or both, with colors ranging from yellow-orange to pink-orange. Specimens may also show phosphorescence. The acicularity of wollastonite is a property of considerable importance to the marketplace. The plastics industry makes utilization of high aspect ratio grades of wollastonite (20:1) for reinforcing thermoplastics and thermoset polymer compounds. The naturally high pH of 9.9 (10% water slurry) is a prime property to the coatings industry. The coatings industry uses milled grades of wollastonite as a pH stabilizer in interior and exterior PVA and acrylic latex systems. Processed wollastonite can have a G.E. brightness of 90 to 93. Chemically, wollastonite is inert and this property makes it useful as a filler and reinforcing agent. SINCE the first recognition of eutectic solidification as the simultaneous formation of 2 solids from one liquid,1 many complex structures thus produced have been observed. Despite many attempts to ascertain it, however, the detailed mechanism by which these structures develop remains obscure. In an attempt to clarify the origin of eutectic structures, the study described in this paper was undertaken. The broad objective of the study was to investigate the effect of different solidification conditions on the structure of single eutectic grains. It was expected that the eutectic structure would thereby be isolated for study, but preliminary experiments revealed another structure within each grain. When a literature surveye revealed only 1 previous mention of the subgrain structure,' it was decided to determine the origin of the structure and to study its response to various growth conditions. Before presenting the details of the investigation, it is apropos to distinguish carefully among the 3 structures produced during eutectic solidification. This is especially desirable in view of the apparent confusion existing in the literature concerning the structures in a eutectic specimen. The confusion is due largely to the existence of the subgrain structure noted above which is easily mistaken for the grain structure. In the following paragraphs, an effort is made to distinguish the 3 structures by briefly describing their origin during solidification, even though the results are thereby anticipated slightly. The 3 structures produced during eutectic solidification are the grain structure, the colony structure, and the eutectic structure, each one contained by the one preceding it. The grain structure is analogous to the polycrystalline structure of a metal or inle-phase alloy in that each grain grows from a single nucleus. A somewhat broader interpretation is needed here, however, because of the presence of 2 phases in each grain. Since in most eutec-tics particles of 1 phase are dispersed in a matrix of the other, a grain may be taken to be the region in which the matrix phase is monocrystalline.*

Adaptations, modifications and improvements have been made by several organizations or individuals and to complete the record I want to document a number of them. The Nicaro Nickel Co. operated a Government owned plant at Nicaro, Oriente, Cuba, during the past war. A report on the project was written for Reconstruction Finance Corp. and is in the document file collected by the Office of Technical Services, Commerce Department and filed with the Library of Congress, where it can be consulted or bibliofilm or photostat copies obtained by asking for copies of PB 97271. Nicaro Nickel Co. has obtained a series of U.S. Patents, my list (probably incomplete) of which bears the following numbers: 2,400,098; 2,400,114; 2,400,115; 2,400,461; 2,400,612; 2,458,902 and 2,473,795. International Nickel Co. has also studied the problem and U.S. Patent 2,478,942 shows that some of the complications involving occasional low extractions have been unraveled. Forward, Samis, and Kudryk, of the University of British Columbia, have also published a study of copper-nickel sulphide concentrate.' Others are interested and it is evident that this type of hydrometallurgy is likely to find a happy application in the not-too-far distant future. Caron's two papers practically amount to a summation of his life's work on the important subject of nickeliferous iron ores and the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is fortunate to have been chosen the medium of publication. M. Rey—The ammonia leaching process has been the subject of certain studies in New Caledonia, but at the present time, the conditions are not very favorable to its adoption. The process is a combination of a thermal and a hydrometallurgical process. As a result, the first costs and the operative costs are rather high. To counteract this unfavorable situation, it would be necessary to make a very high extraction. But unfortunately, the process is delicate and in spite of all of Caron's valuable work, there are still many unknown factors. It is difficult to obtain regularly a high extraction, exceeding 75 to 80 pct. It would be interesting to have the opinion of Inter-national Nickel on the process and to know what the Dutch are doing in Celebes. M. H. Caron (author's reply)—I am quite familiar with the different types of nickel and cobalt ores as found on New Caledonia, and it may be pointed out that the Celebes ores are quite the same in their properties. Their behavior when treating the ores by the ammonia-leaching process is also alike and in my opinion, there is no reason why a high extraction of the New Caledonian ores could not be obtained if the process is properly applied. For the sake of completeness I may add that one of my patents has not been discussed in the papers. This patent deals particularly with the treatment of serpentine nickel ores. The lattice parameters of zirconium and zirconium-oxygen solid solutions (hcp) were determined from measurements of back-reflection X-ray photograms obtained at 29°C using a symmetrical focussing camera. The following linear equations between parameters (c,a) in angstrom units (10-8 cm) and atom ratio (m) of oxygen to zirconium were obtained: c = 5.14764 + 0.2077m a =3.23168 + 0.1099m. The linear equations given are valid over the range 0 to 5 at. Pct 0. The accuracy of individual parameter measurements approaches the limiting accuracy determined by the spectral broadening of the incident characteristic radiation, and exceeds the accuracy of previously reported values. THE present work was undertaken in order to determine the lattice parameters of zirconium-oxygen solid solutions with an accuracy that allows quantitative determination of oxygen in zirconium. The results indicate that this is possible if very careful measurements are made, since the parameter change is only a few hundredths of a percent per at. pct 0.1, 2 In the present investigation the desired accuracy was achieved with large-grained samples using a back-reflection focussing camera and maintaining good temperature control during exposure. In addition a digital computer was used for calculation of the parameters by means of an analytical extrapolation.37 Suitable diffraction photograms were obtained from large-grained samples by using a modification of the technique described by Graf and Monteil.5 This consists of simultaneous rotation and oscillation of the specimen about two mutually perpendicular axes during exposure. Whereas, normally the upper limit of grain size is about 50 µ for useable diffraction photograms, this technique allows extending the upper limit of grain-size to exposure of a single crystal. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation of Alloys for X-ray Diffraction—Zir-conium, designated as hafnium-free, Westinghouse "Grade 1," was swaged from l/2-in.-diam crystal bar to 3/8-in.-diam rods. Substantially all of the hydrogen was removed from the zirconium by annealing at 1200°C in a high dynamic vacuum. The rods were then swaged to 0.2 in. diam without intermediate annealing, and 2 in. lengths were cut for alloying with oxygen. Samples for chemical analysis were taken from portions of the rods between each 2 in. length. Chemical analysis of the dehydroge-nated zirconium is given in Table I. Commercial tank oxygen (99.5 pct 0) was condensed in a liquid nitrogen-cooled trap, and part of the condensate was slowly reevaporated into 5-liter storage flasks. Nitrogen remained as a reactive impurity, and the calculated maximum increase in nitrogen content after a 5 at. pct 0 addition to zirconium was 50 ppm by weight. However, chemical analyses of several of the prepared alloys indicated that the maximum increase in nitrogen content was 10 ppm. The storage flasks, a Sieverts-type gas burette and manometer, and associated traps, pumps, and pressure gauges were connected through a glass high-vacuum manifold to comprise the gas addition system. THE Tri-State district, as outlined in this paper, refers to the entire mineralized area in southwestern Missouri, southeastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma (Fig. 1). The part of the district in Missouri and near Galena, Kans., is still sometimes referred to as the Joplin district (Fig. 2). The Picher-Miami area is that part of the Tri-State district located contiguously in Kansas and Oklahoma in the vicinity of Baxter Springs, Picher and Miami. This paper is confined almost wholly to the ore deposits of the Tri-State district and particularly to the Picher-Miami area. Our study of the ore deposits of this district dates from late in 1925 (by Fowler) and early in 1927 (by Lyden) to the present. Our work has been confined almost entirely to the search for ore for numerous companies and individuals. It was not possible for us to undertake numerous highly interesting investigations which presented themselves but which would not immediately help in finding ore. We particularly refer to the general structural geology of the Ozark uplift, the genesis of the ore, and other problems of a similar nature. The local and general structural problems of the district are being solved gradually as the work progresses. The factors that control the loci of the several orebodies are evident. This paper is based almost exclusively upon our own observations. Most of the important mines in the Picher-Miami area were studied in detail. A map (Fig. 5) is included which shows this area and the properties we have examined to date. When it was convenient we visited, studied and compared structural relations in numerous mines in states outside the district. Some of these observations are noted in this paper.

Considering the great advance in the development and application of electricity, it is not strange that eventually a big field for its use has been found in oil-field operations. So far as is known, the first electric drive in oil-field operations was in the Russian field of Baku in 1900. The first application in this country was made by the South Penn Oil Co. near Folsom, West Va. in 1903. In 1916, electric power was first used in the Burma fields of India for drilling and pumping. Between 1916 and 1922, The Empire Gas & Fuel Co. made the first large electrical installation in the Mid-Continent fields. But although the first application was made 27 years ago, it is only within the last 10 years that oil companies have begun to look upon its use with much favor. Within the last few years, there has been a steady increase in the use of electricity in the oil fields. The first application of electricity for oil-field operations in Wyoming was in the Lander field in 1919; the second was in 1924 in Salt Creek; and the third, and last to date, was made by the Continental Oil Co. in the Big Muddy field during 1926. Lander Field The electrification of oil-field operations in Wyoming was initiated by J. W. Steele, superintendent of the Producers & Refiners Oil Corpn., in the Lander field in 1919. At that time, 32 wells were being pumped from five band-wheel powers, with oil engines as the prime movers. Eight barrels of fuel oil were used for power per day and at the price of 90 c. per bbl. the fuel bill was $36 per day. It was decided to try a 15 to 35-hp. oil-field motor on one of these powers. Electric power was generated with steam at the old Wind River refinery station. This test was so successful that in 1920 all five powers were equipped with 15 to 35-hp. oil-field motors, the power being obtained from the Sinks Canyon hydroelectric station. Four of these powers pumped wells at an average depth of 1450 ft., and the fifth pumped wells at an average of 2100 ft. In 1920, the average production per day from the 32 wells was 325 bbl. The changes in superconducting properties with aging time have been studied ,for the pecipitation reaction in a Tc-30 at. pct V alloy. Superconducting critical temperature, upper critical field, and relative critical current density were determined by ac susceptibility techniques. Aging produces changes in critical temperature of both matrix and precipitate which can be rationalized by compositional effects. maximum flux pinning (critical current density) occurs at a time during aging when subgrain boundaries are completely decorated with precipitates and the subgrain centers remain precipitate -free. The particular effectiveness as barriers to flux motion of planar defects which enclose regions of low deject density is discussed. THE precipitation of a second phase can dramatically modify the superconducting properties of type I1 super-conductors. According to Livingston and Schadler1 one might expect changes in the primary, secondary, and tertiary superconducting properties of the material. Changes in matrix chemistry caused by precipitation can alter the fundamental superconducting parameters; critical temperature, Tc, and thermody-namic critical field, Hc. The concimitant changes in electron mean free path (reflected in normal state resistivity) can affect the critical fields Hc 1, IIc2, Hc3. Finally, the presence of precipitate particles may hinder the motion of flux lines and may considerably improve the current-carrying capacity in high-field superconductors. The influence of precipitation on superconducting properties has been studied in a number of systems.2 Magnetization measurements have been used to study the influence of precipitates on flux pinning in lead-base alloys by Livingston3 and Evetts et al4 In these alloys precipitates induced magnetic hysteresis and flux trapping. The amount of hysteresis increased with the volume fraction of precipitate and decreased with coarsening of the precipitate. Jn an Al-Zn alloy5 and an A1-Ag alloy6 the initial precipitate size was presumably smaller than a coherence length and coarsening increased magnetic hysteresis5 and critical current density.6 The influence of precipitation on superconducting properties has also been studied in several of the commercially interesting Ti-Nb7-10 and zr-Nb11 alloys. The maximum in critical current density for these alloys was confined to a narrow range of either isothermal aging time" or isochronal aging temperature7 during the precipitation reaction. Thus, experimental evidence and theoretical considerations suggest there is an optimum precipitate size, spacing, and density, and a critical composition with respect to the matrix for flux pinning. What these "optimum" values might be and the relative importance of each is still not clear, although a few generalizations can be made. It is generally accepted1' that particle sizes smaller than the coherence length or larger than the inter-flux line spacing are poor pinning centers. In high Hc2 materials, precipitate sizes for maximum values of critical current density lie in the range of 50 to 2000Å,9,7 and there are indications that increasing dissimilarity between precipitate and matrix produces increasing pinning force.13 Because of several interesting features of the aging reaction in a Tc-30 pct V alloy, we have chosen to study the influence of precipitation on the superconducting properties of this alloy. The physical metallurgy14 and a survey of the superconducting properties" of the Tc-V alloy system have been reported. The Tc-V phase diagram is presented in Fig. 1. At 1500°C the Tc-30 pct V alloy is in the single phase 6 field. Samples quenched from the 6-phase field have a CsCl structure X-ray diffraction pattern at room temperature and it has been proposed that the 6 structure is closely related to the bcc lattice.14 When held isothermally below the eutectoid temperature, 115O°C, the 6 phase decomposes into the CsCl and hcp phases.
