This chapter describes the rock mechanics studies performed for a high cut at a nuclear power station in Pennsylvania. Two units presently are being constructed on the Susquehanna River. When these units are completed, they will generate approximately 2100 MW of electricity. It was necessary to excavate about 1 million cu yd of rock to prepare the site. This excavation resulted in a high cut on the west and north sides of the station area with a maximum height of about 200 ft. The location of the high cut with respect to the plant facilities is shown on Fig. 1. The recommended slope angles ranged from 1 ½ (horizontal) to 1 (vertical) for the upper residual soil to ½ to 1 for the deeper competent rock. Because of the significant height of this cut and the fact that the slope is immediately adjacent to the proposed nuclear facilities, extensive stability analyses were performed prior to, during, and after excavation to evaluate the steepest angle at which the slopes could be safely cut. The studies consisted of evaluating both qualitatively and quantitatively all apparent factors which could affect the stability of the slopes. These factors include the strength of the material, the zones of weak material which are present along the planes of schistosity, the prominent joint systems, the ground water, and postulated seismic effects. FOR a number of years up to the economic setback of the 1929-1931 period, the greatest proportional advances in the mineral industries in California were made among the substances in the nonmetallic groupings, particularly among the so-called industrial minerals and the salines. During the past year or two, although these have not regained the stride that marked their progress in the preceding decade, we can still record, -some new developments. California produces annually between 55 and' 60 different minerals on a commercial scale. Of these, some 40 to 45 comprise the "structural," "industrial," and "salines" materials as grouped in the reports of the State's Division of Mines. WHILE the recrystallization properties of most of the practically important metals are known in considerable detail, those of lead are still relatively little known in spite of some valuable contributions in recent years. This condition probably is due to the difficulties involved in applying the usual methods of investigation. The microscopic method of discriminating between the elongated deformed grains of the familiar lenticular shape and the equiaxed recrys-tallized grains is not successful with fully refined lead: lenticular grains cannot be seen under the microscope with any amount of deformation whatever. The probable cause of this phenomenon was recognized long ago. With large deformation the time of recrystallization at room tem-perature is shorter than the period of preparation of the specimen for microscopic examination; with small deformation the deformed grains are not noticeably elongated in the first place. However, with small deformation the migration of the grain boundaries can be observed. The only systematic investigations yet published on the recrystallization of lead, those by R. S. Russell,1-3 make use of the conditions just described. Russell considered recrystallization completed when no further migration of boundaries could be observed. A serious objection to this method arises from the fact that there is no evidence to support the view that grain-boundary migration results only from recrystallization. If such migration does result from other sources after recrystallization is com-pleted-after the deformed grains have been replaced by new unde-formed grains-the "time of recrystallization" as determined by Russell may be too long. Furthermore, the method is subject to the above-mentioned limitation because of the unavoidable period of preparation of the sample. According to Russell, even with the fastest technique 5 min. elapsed before the deformed samples were ready for examination, and consequently no recrystallization time shorter than 5 min. could be measured.

Blast-furnace practice in France is determined more or less by the character of the ores used. Some French ores are siliceous and others are calcareous, therefore by proper burdening a self-fluxing mix can be used. This is not always done, as, for instance, at the Caen furnaces of the Société Métallurgique de Normandie, where the Soumont ore of Normandy is used, which is a carbonate. This ore is crushed and calcined at the mines, yielding a product that is porous and well sized for blast-furnace consumption. The lines of the Caen furnaces are given in Fig. 1. Originally these furnaces had 16 tuyeres; six are plucked and these tuyeres are set in the lower part of the bosh. Operating data on these furnaces are given in Table 1. The taking of proper samples of crude ores seems to he less thoroughly understood, or less carefully practiced, than its impor tance requires. We all know how often we encounter the reports of very accurate assays and analyses, the weight of which as evidence wholly depends on the method of obtaining the sample, and is very probably nil, because there has been no proper sampling. Pissages might be cited from technical books, and from current technical literature (all the work of writers whom we delight to honor) to show that even among high scientific authorities there is too little acquaintance with the practical art of the sampler. There is no metallurgical or chemical establishment which does not frequently receive samples truly representing nothing. They consist usually of bits of ore, or what not, selected because they are worse or better than the average of what they are meant to represent. And they are worthless, no matter who made the selection. Where conscious choice is permitted to enter into the operation, a fair sample will not result, unless by a miracle. The work of sampling is often looked upon as within the realm of boys and of pensioners only. At least, though the manual labor be left to subordinates, the principles on which it is conducted and the safeguards with which it is surrounded are not unworthy of the study of experts; and experts should he ready to teach these principles and enforce them in practice. For exact sampling is the indispensable first step towards learning the value of any boxful, carload or shipload of ore. I propose to give a simple account of the method of sampling by hand, such as I have always pursued. There is nothing new about it. So far as I know, it is the immemorial old method, as old at least as Cornish copper-mining. Perhaps my fellow-members in the Institute may suggest improvements in it. If not, it will constitute a record in our Transactions to which laymen and beginners may be referred.

THE Seventh International Petroleum Exposition and Congress to be held in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 4 to 11, inclusive, in true western spirit promises to be bigger and better than ever. The Exposition has become an established institution. It gives opportunity to petroleum engineers, technologists, and operators to see each year at one place what the tool makers and machinery manufacturers have to offer which is new or better. It has truly become a place "where men, methods and machinery meet." It is also a convenient focus for technical meetings of various kinds devoted to petroleum and natural gas problems. 'The Petroleum Division of the A. I. M. E. has for several years held its chief fall meeting at Tulsa just preceding the opening of the Es- position. This year our meeting will be on Oct. 2 and 3 and it will be held as usual at Hotel Mayo. The Mid- Continent Oil and Gas Association will, as usual, hold a meeting during the Exposition and this year the Petroleum Division of the A. S. M. E. will hold a three- day session, Oct. 6-8, in the auditorium on the Esposition grounds. In all, six technical sessions are planned by this Society, and aside from reports of committees some 20 technical papers are to be presented. Members of the Institute should attend its own meeting and stay over for as many days as possible for the other meeting at which they will hear and see much of helpful interest.

T HE Mining Methods Committee held its initial meeting* on Tuesday afternoon, with F. W. Bradley in the chair and W. Y. Westervelt as vice- chairman. The first paper to be presented was "A Plea for a U. S. Court of Patent Appeals," for which Kenneth W. Greenawalt ably pleaded. The paper (which was published in full in last month's issue) is so carefully prepared that no synopsis can do it justice. It discusses the opposed views of some patent lawyers and other lawyers and members of the judiciary as, for example, Chief Justice Taft who is quoted as saying in 1921: "I think it is a great deal better to take a first class lawyer and a first-class judge and make him a good patent expert than it is to take a patent expert and try to make him a first-class lawyer and a good judge." Mr. Greenawalt argued the need for specialized scientific and engineering interest and understanding to enable a lawyer or judge to prepare or interpret patent specifications and decide the originality necessary for a valid invention. He proposed the special U. S. Court of Patent Appeals to also counteract the costly confusion and injustice now ruling where a patent may be declared valid in the courts of certain States and invalid by the courts of other States.

THIS test was described in a privately circulated First Progress Report on Slacking Characteristics of Coal, by A. C. Fieldner and W. A. Selvig, May 1, 1928. The test was described in detail in U. S. Bureau of Mines Report of Investigation 3055, in November, 1930.1 The test, in brief, is conducted as follows: A sample of freshly mined coal consisting of 18 to 25 pieces approximating 1 ¼ cubes, and weighing 500 to 600 grams, is taken for the test. The sample is subjected to a "blank sieving" of carefully regulated degree, on an 8-in. circular sieve with 0.263-in. square openings; and the undersize and oversize weighed. The oversize is placed on a sheet-iron pan and dried for about 24 hr. in an A.S.T.M. air-drying oven maintained at 30° to 35° C. through which a current of warm air is drawn. The sample is then cooled to room temperature and immersed for one hour in water at the same temperature. The water is then drained off, the sample dried for 24 hr. as before, cooled, sieved as before, and the oversize and undersize weighed. The percentage weight of the undersize, is calculated and reported as the first cycle loss. This loss, corrected by subtracting the percentage loss in the blank sieving, is termed the slacking index. The sample may be subjected to further cycles of wetting, draining, air-drying, sieving and weighing. In a letter (August, 1932) W. A. Selvig approved making the blank sieving on a duplicate sample, rather than on the sample used for the test, where sufficient coal was available. This method is now employed in these laboratories. The accelerated weathering test has been employed in the labora-tories of the Research Council of Alberta, at Edmonton, since 1928, but not found entirely satisfactory as repeat determinations with samples taken from the same or adjacent mines frequently showed serious differ-ences. Differences must be expected as the coal may vary in the seam, and the selection of a typical set of lumps approximating 1 ¼ -in. cubes

Electron microscope evidence which indicates that TaC may precipitate at random sites in the matrix is presented. Initially the particles are almost spherical and coherent with the matrix. However, as they grow in conditions in which there are insufficient vacancies to relieve lattice strain, the particles rapidly lose coherency in two directions and continue to grow as plates with approximately the full lattice mismatch strain present perpendicular to the plane of the plate. The necessary relief of strain comes from dislocations loops which do not become visible until the later stages of aging. The rapid decrease of apparent strain to low values of appoximately 1 pct at small particle sizes arises not from a complete incoherency but from applying a model wrong for the particle shape and strain distribution. PREVIOUS work has shown that MC-type carbides may precipitate intragranularly in austenitic stainless steel on dislocations,1&apos;2 in association with stacking faults,3&apos;4 and randomly through the matrix,5-7 In investigations of the matrix precipitate by thin-foil electron microscopy, considerable lattice strain has been found to occur around the precipitating phase.7&apos;8 Attempts have been made to evaluate the amount of lattice strain by using the methods developed by Ashby and brown.9,10 Values of the linear strain, much less than the 17 pct theoretical mismatch (for TaC), have been reported; it has been suggested that this is due to either a loss of coherency1&apos; or vacancy absorption which occurs during either the initial nucleation or growth of the precipitate." This report is an extension of earlier work7 that dealt with the precipitation of TaC from an 18Cr/12Ni/ 2Ta/O.lC alloy after it had been quenched from 1300°C and aged between 600" and 840°C. In particular, the shape of the precipitate particles and the amount of strain in the matrix, due to the precipitate, have been studied. The work described here is part of a wider investigation of factors that affect carbide precipitation in austenitic stainless steel," details of which are to appear elsewhere. RESULTS The present investigation can be conveniently split into two aspects of the strain-fields surrounding the matrix particles: 1) information derived from the strain-field which indicates the shape and habit plane of the precipitate particles and 2) the magnitude and sign of the strain-field. The Shape and Habit Plane of the TaC Precipitate. In the early stages of aging twin lobes (normally black F. H. FROES, formerly at the University of Sheffield, Sheffield, England, is Staff Scientist, Colt Industries, Crucible Materials Research Center, Pittsburgh, Pa. D. H. WARRINGTON is Lecturer, Department of Metallurgy, University of Sheffield. Manuscript submitted November 1, 1968. IMD on white background, i.e., for the deviation parameter, S > 0) that indicate the strained region of the matrix define the position of the particles by bright field transmission electron microscopy. The actual particles were not detected until they were approximately 120Å diam; below this size they were too small to be imaged in the electron microscope. This meant that particle growth that had occurred before this stage had to be inferred from the matrix strain-field contrast. In all cases when diffraction effects were observed from the precipitate particles, a cube-cube orientation relationship (i.e., (llO)ppt Il<llO>matrix and {1ll }ppt {III} matrix) existed between the precipitate and the matrix. From the matrix precipitate particles lying along edge-on {111} planes (e.g., at A, Fig. I), the precipitates are seen to be plate-like with their diameter being roughly 18 times their thickness after 5000 hr at 650°C. However, the exact shape of the particles cannot be determined because of the masking effect of the strain-field contrast. If a dark-field micrograph, using a precipitate reflection, is studied, Fig. 2, a number of the projected images of the TaC particles [on the (110) foil surface] apear to have straight edges parallel to projected f111) planes. Thus, it appears that in the later stages of aging the TaC particles are plate-like with some tendency for the edges of the plate to be bounded by the matrix close-packed {ill} planes (though the general shape of the particles in the plane of the plate is circular and thus the "diameter" of the particles has a real physical significance). It should be noted that the bands of fine discrete particles observed in Figs. 1 and 2 are not the matrix precipitate discussed in this paper but are precipitates associated with extrinsic stacking faults3j4 occurring on (111) matrix planes. **£** ****** \ *x 23 Fig. 1—18/12/2~a/0.1~ alloy. The production of lightweight aggregates in Oregon is a new industry, and, like all new enterprises, it is suffering from growing pains characterized by numerous, small operations some of which flourish for a short time and then cease altogether. Normally all industrial mineral products are produced in a highly competitive atmosphere. At the present time this condition does not exist to a very marked degree in the state because as yet producers have not saturated the constantly expanding market. This paper has been prepared with the intention of outlining very briefly the current status of the various products now being used as lightweight aggregates in Oregon. The present picture will surely change, perhaps quite radically within even a short space of time.

John Duer Irving, who left his post as Professor of Economic Geology at the Sheffield Scientific School, New Haven, Conn., to join the Eleventh Regiment of Engineers shortly after the declaration of war, died in France, July 26, 1918, from an attack of pneumonia. Through the initiative of Mr. Benjamin B. Lawrence, a memorial service to Captain Irving was held at St. Paul&apos;s Chapel, Columbia University, on Sunday afternoon, August 4, which was&apos; attended by members of Captain Irving&apos;s family, and about four hundred of his friends from Columbia, Yale, the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the Association of the 11th Regiment of Engineers. Professor James F. Kemp delivered the memorial address, and has prepared for the Institute the following account of Captain Irving&apos;s life, Professor Kemp and Captain Irving having been associated on the most intimate terms for a number of years. , The war has brought home to friends and kin in the western shores of thc Atlantic many losses whose suddenness has the shock of a blow. Many more will follow, but none can leave a sharper sense of regret than the news that the keen and productive mind; the inspiring teacher; the successful and considerate editor, the fine, true man and friend had all passed away when John Duer Irving made the final great gift to the service of his country, in the cause of decency and right. In the closing days of July, the cable brought the tidings that toward midnight on the twentieth of the month pneumonia had proved too great a tax upon one already worn by excessive labors. John Duer Irving was born in Madison, Wis., August 18, 1874. His father, Roland Duer Irving, was at the time professor of geology, mineralogy and metallurgy in the State University of Wisconsin.&apos; Roland . Irving, the father, had entered Columbia College in 1863, but trouble with his eyes compelled him to suspend his studies in the classical course in his sophomore year, and to replace study with some months of life and travel in England. Ultimately his eyes became stronger, and he entered the School of Mincs, completing the course for the degree of Engineer of Mines in 1869, with the third class graduated. The class of eleven contained other future geologists. It numbered on its roll Henry Newton and Walter P. Jenney of the early survey of the Black Hills, where John, future son of Roland, was in the course of years to make his doctor&apos;s dissertation, and with its publication his really serious entrance into the profession. Roland Irving was a favorite student of Professor J. S. Newberry, affectionately known to all of his students as "Uncle John," and after some experience in mining and smelting in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, joined the Ohio Survey under Dr. Newberry. The work in Ohio was largely performed during the vacations of the University of Wisconsin, to whose chair Roland Irving was called in 1870. Later, his residence in Wisconsin led to two events of prime importance in the history of American geology. He began the study of the Gogebic iron range and caught the clue to the origin and stratigraphy of the iron ores of all the Lake Superior ranges; and he later undertook the mapping and description of the copper-bearing rocks of the Lake Superior basin. The formative years of the son, John, were passed in a home where the father.

THE physical properties of uranium have been reviewed by Katz and Rabinowitch.1 Their review includes thermal conductivity data for ternperatures above 375°K. Recently, Mendelssohn and Rosenberg&apos; have published data on the thermal conductivity of uranium from 2" to 20°K. Our measuremerits indicate the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity in the temperature interval from 20" to 300°K. Electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power were measured on the same sample. The material studied was normal uranium which had been heated at 700°C in a lead bath for 10 min and then quenched in a water bath held at 50°C. From this material a rod M in. in diameter and 2 1/2 in. long was machined. Two 0.040 in. holes were drilled into the rod 1 3/4 in. apart. Copper-constantan thermocouples for temperature and potential measurements were soldered to copper pins which were pressed tightly into these holes. Details of the equipment and experimental techniques used in making the measurements have been described elsewhere." Fig. 1 shows micrographs of a section of the sample studied. Fig. la was taken with unpolarized light and shows impurity inclusions, probably uranium carbide. Fig. lb, showing the same field, was taken with polarized light and gives some indication of the grain size and twinning within the grains. The evolution of the oil business is one of the great industrial romances of modern times. First used as a medicine, then as a lubricant, then as an illuminant, and finally as a motor fuel, each change in its principal usage caused large increases in consumption. Producing Successes The producing branch of the industry responded ably to the demands made upon it. Never was there a famine, rarely any threat of scarcity, and stored inventories were gradually accumulated to form comfortable working stocks. Originally an erratic and hazardous undertaking, the discovery and development of oil fields has made such strides as to classify now as a science. When storage stocks were low, production in close balance with consumption, and demand trending sharply upward, considerable concern was expressed over future needs. Price was very responsive to fluctuations in supply under those conditions, and quotations for crude and refined oils exhibited wide swings. A very different situation exists today. Consideration of the statistics only since the war will show how recent has been this change. In the 10-year period from 1918 to 1927 inclusive, we produced in the United States 6,100,000,000 bbl. of crude and imported 900,000,000 bbl., our total supply being 7,000,000,000 bbl. The consumption was 6,600,000,000 bbl., thus adding to stocks 400,000,000 bbl., an accumulation of somewhat less than 6 per cent. of the total supply. During that period virtually every field was promptly developed as soon as discovered and nearly every well in the country was producing at full capacity. With the maximum production of the wells required to take care of the rapid increases in consumption, with storage stocks moderate and proven reserves very slight, the producing division of the industry acquired a tempo not needed now. Potential Surplus Today the situation is vastly different. The economic consumption is about 2,700,000 bbl., with current production slightly in excess of that.

THE education of adolescents to perform the duties and assume the responsibilities of maturity has been a characteristic of human society since the dawn of history. In the beginning the members of the immediate family performed this function, and in modern life they still have an important part in it. Possibly religion was the first field in which education began to be functional; young people were sent for instruction to a teacher who had a broader and deeper knowledge of the subject than was possessed by the family. It does not seem necessary for our purpose to attempt to determine how, when, or where instruction in the practical arts first began to become functional, and the brief outline which follows must suffice. The discovery and utilization of mineral substances to improve and maintain the conditions of human living is a practical art, which must have had an almost accidental origin and have been developed by empirical experiments. We do not know, nor would it be useful to try to fancy, how men first learned that they could make use of mineral substances to their benefit, but however that knowledge was initially gained it was certainly trans- mitted through instruction in the family. At fist such activities must have been merely a minor part of the making of a living, bit in time those who excelled found it better to devote them-

THE recently discovered occurrence of diamonds near Murfreesboro, Pike county, Ark., was brought to. our attention by Mr. Samuel W. Reyburn (Trustee for Messrs. C. S. Stifft, A. D. Cohn, August Zinsser, Jr., and himself, owners of the property), through whose courtesy we investigated the locality of the deposit. Prospecting with the diamond-drill is now in active progress ; but mining operations on a large scale have not yet been ordered. Geology.-The geology as well as the petrography of this interesting locality has been well described by Messrs. J. C. Branner and R. N. Brackett.1 Briefly summarized, the igneous rock in which the diamonds are found is a vitreous peridotite, forming a stock or volcanic neck, which has broken up through the Carboniferous and Cretaceous quartzites and sandstones. After an extensive period of erosion, during which an unknown portion of the neck and presumably a previously existent volcanic cone have been removed, the surface was covered with thin beds of Post-Tertiary conglomerate. The volcanic intrusion was accompanied by the formation of several small dikes of a rock much like that of the main body. One of these dikes cuts across the stock, while another cuts the Cretaceous sandstone, but is overlain by the conglomerate, thus giving a datum for the period of intrusion. So far as known, there was little, if any, metamorphism of the country-rock by the igneous magna, which probably followed an approximately vertical course, so that a more or less vertical extension downward of the igneous body to indefinite depths may be expected.

AT Grand Saline, some 65 miles east of Dallas, the Morton Salt Co. of Chicago has for some years operated a brine pumping and evaporation plant on a salt dome. They recently drilled trial holes to obtain data on the dome, preparatory to opening, a new mine, with the following results: The dome is in the form of a truncated cone, with an average of 210 ft. of cover. The top of the dome is approximately one mile in diameter, with the town of Grand Saline lying over the northern rim, and the sides slope off at an angle of 50" to 80" from the horizontal. The deepest holes were drilled to 900 ft. without penetrating beyond the salt, and indications are that the salt deposit is several thousand feet thick. As the deposit increases in area with the depth, there is undoubtedly enough salt to supply a mining operation for an almost unlimited period of years.

INTRODUCTION For heterogeneous non-catalytic solid-gas reactions carried out in fluidized bed reactors, nominal bed temperature is an average value between gas and solid. For highly exothermic reactions, actual particle temperature can be up to hundred degrees above termocouple temperature, since heat dissipate at slower rate than heat generation during some steps of transformation. These micro instabilities at particle level can displace thermodynamic equilibrium from the desired phase to others. This effect is important when relatively narrow range of phase stability exists, like in sulphation roasting of sulphides, where bed discharge contains, in addition to the desired sulphate others metastable phases such as basic sulphate and ferrite. For example, for copper-iron sulphide concentration roasted below 680°C, no cupric ferrite is formed, as shown by Jakob et al., therefore the separate Kellogg&apos;s stability phase diagrams Cu-S-O represent the roasting (Fig.l). At temperature above this one, like 760°C for example, phase stability changes from CuSO4 to the basic sulphate Cu0•CuSO4. Solid state reaction between Cu0•CuSO4 and Fe203 also occurs to form cupric ferrite, Cu0•Fe2O3, therefore the Cu-Fe-S-O Kellogg&apos;s phase diagram of Fig. 1 (continuous line) represents this condition of roasting. Although both Cu0•CuSO4 and Cu0•Fe2O3 are metastable phases under normal operating conditions of sulphation roasting(1-10% SO2, 1-10% 02 and 680°C, points A and B,Fig. 1) sulphation of these species and particularly ferrite are slow and limited due to diffusional control. This explain why reactors discharge contains several phases: CuSO4, Cu0•CuSO4, CuO•Fe203 plus small amounts of CuS and FeS due to the baclonixed conditions of fluidized bed reactors. The presence of cuprous ferrite due to reducing conditions inside individual particles also occurs, but in very limited extent at the reaction interface, as it is demonstrated by the low soluble iron levels of calcines. On the other hand, the presence of cupric ferrites can be explained only due to the higher temperature achieved by particles, since below 680°C cupric ferrite formation does not take place. [ ] This phenomena also occurs for others non-ferrous metal sulphides concentrates roasted under sulphation conditions, such as 7n, Co and Ni. Therefore the prediction of discharge composition of fluidized beds is not possible based only on kinetics and mechanistics models alone or purely thermodynamical considerations, since all factors should be integrated to describe the overall phenomena. FULLY a decade ago, demand for ground mica began to exceed supplies of scrap mica from manufacturing operations and of waste block from feldspar and sheet mica mining in the United States, with the result that in recent years the market has absorbed larger and larger quantities of mica recovered as a by-product from clay washing,1 as a joint product with kyanite,2 and by grinding schists. So far, only schists that contain a large percentage of mica have been utilized for making ground mica, but already there has been a good deal of wishful thinking with regard to recovering mica as an aid to the prospective working of low-grade gold ores and ores of certain base metals. With wet-ground mica selling at $60 to $100 a ton and even dry-ground mica worth over $20 a ton, many ores that could not be considered as otherwise workable under present conditions will show commercial possibilities if they can be made to yield even a relatively small percentage of salable mica. An interesting paper might be written on the coming role of industrial minerals as joint products of metal mines, It is largely a matter of mar-kets. Many years ago I watched the mess left behind the gold dredges in the mountains of Colorado and thought of the Denver sand and gravel operators who prided themselves upon their canniness in providing devices for catching gold merely as an incident to their regular business of selling what we miners classed as "tailings." Nowadays almost every milling or mining operation near settled communities finds use for at least part of its waste for road material or concrete aggregate and several eastern iron mines have gone into the crushed-stone business. Promoters now mention fertilizer "filler" as potentially salable at all the way from $1 to $10 a ton, or whatever is needed to cover costs of mining and treating the "ore" and leave the metal values as "clear profit."
