The solubility of sulfur in Si-Fe was determined by the metallographic examination of heat-treated and quenched samples. In the absence of manganese, the solubility in 3.1 pct Si-Fe was found to be about 0.010 pct at 1000o C, 0.015 pct at 11000C, and 0.020 pct at 1150°C, which is substatntially less than hitherto reported. Increasing the silicon content was found to decrease the solubility of sulfur, which is consistent with the increase in the activity coefficient of sulfur with increasing silicon content that has been reported for Fe-Si alloys. Manganese additions were studied in alloys containing 3.1 pct Si and between 0.013 and 0.015 pct S. At low manganese levels the solubility product of manganese sulfide was found to be lower than previously reported. THE solubility of sulfur in pure polycrystalline iron has been reported by Rosenquist and Dunicz1 and by Turkdogan et al.2 Samples were equilibrated in atmospheres containing different ratios of H2S/H2. Both groups of investigators found a solubility limit in y iron of 0.013 pct at 1000oC and 0.031 pct at 1200°C. In addition, Rosenquist and Dunicz1 found a solubility limit in a iron of 0.020 pct at 900°C. Ainslie, Hoffman, and seybolt3 found significantly higher sulfur contents in polycrystalline iron samples than in single-crystal samples after heating at 890°C in a sealed tube containing a mixture of powdered iron and FeS made with s35. Whereas the single crystals contained 0.013 and 0.016 pct S (± 0.005 pct), the polycrystalline samples contained between 0.016 and 0.026 pct S. Autoradiographs suggested that the excess sulfur in the polycrystalline samples was due to the segregation of sulfur in solution at grain boundaries. Ainslie and seybolt4 have reported on the solubility of sulfur in 3 pct Si-Fe. Their samples were sealed in capsules containing hydrogen and sufficient sulfur as cobalt sulfide to saturate the sample. After heat treating, the sulfur-rich phase on the surface was removed by abrading, and the sulfur content of the sample was taken as the equilibrium value for that temperature. Before the equilibrating heat treatment, the samples were heated to 1300°C to coarsen the grains. The resulting grain size, which was about 3/18 in. in diam, was considered sufficiently large to preclude a sensible increase in sulfur solubility due to grain boundary segregation. They reported the solubility to be 0.029 pct at 900oC, 0.063 pct at 1000oC, 0.076 pct at 1100°C, 0.122 pct at 1200°C, and 0.098 pct at 1300°C.

AT most smelting plants, forced draft, induced by high stacks or fans, is used to carry the gases away from the furnaces, roasters, or sintering plants. Gases moving under forced draft carry varying amounts of solids in the form of dust and fume. Where the weight of the solids is material, and the metal content high, it is usually profitable to treat the gases to recover these solids. Baghouses, Cottrell treaters, and settling chambers are the common forms of plants used to recover solids from gases. To check on the efficiency of these plants it is necessary to know the volume of gas leaving the plant and the amount of solids carried by the gas. As the volume of gas is equal to the product of the velocity of that gas and the cross-sectional area of the flue, the determination of the volume includes the measurement of the area of the cross section and the determination of the velocity. The velocity is generally measured by means of the Pitot tube and Ellison differential pressure gage, although low velocities are best determined by means of an anemometer. The dust concentration is determined by passing a measured volume of sample through a filter and weighing the dust caught. From this the dust concentration per unit of volume may be calculated. It is necessary to assume that the gas is homogeneous or that each cubic foot of the gas contains the same weight of dust as every other cubic foot. Having the volume of gas passing through a flue per unit of time, and the dust concentration of the gas per unit of volume, the amount of solids may easily be calculated.

Strong's equation for calculating bottom-hole pressure reduction due to gas cutting of drilling mud is corrected, resulting in a simpler equation which is easier to use. Use of the equation is illustrated by examples. It is shown that reduction of weight of a 10 lb/gal mud by 50 per cent at the surface due to gas cutting produces only n 3 per cent decrease in hydrostatic head at the bottom of a 5,000-ft well. It is also shown that at the surface 5 volumes of air per volume of mud are required to reduce the apparent mud weight from 8.5 to 6.5 lh/gal in a 3,000-ft well. Illustrative graphs are included to show the effect of various degrees of gas cutting on apparent mud weight at depths of 2,000, .5,000 and 10,000 ft and to show variation of apparent mud weight, with depth for a 100 lb/cu ft (13.37 lb/gal) mud gas cut to 90 lb/cu ft (12.03 lb/gal) at the surface. INTRODUCTION In 1938, Strong' published the following equation for calculating reduction in bottom-hole pressure due to gas cutting of drilling mud h = 1/D [p + pn/100 In p + p(1-n/100)/p(1- n-100)] where: h = depth in feet P = pressure in atmospheres at depth h due to mud column only D = hydrostatic pressure in atmospheres of a col-umn of uncut mud 1 ft high p = back pressure at well-head (in atmospheres) n/100 = fraction by volume of gas in mud at well-head at back pres-sure p This equation was recently found to contain an error due to an incor-rect expression for variation of vol-ume fraction of gas with pressure. Values calculated by the original equation are close to the correct values for small percentages of gas for which it was derived but become increasingly erroneous as the gas content increases and are completely unusable at the very high gas con-tents employed in aerated mud. DERIVATION The nomenclature used is the same as in Strong's paper. The pres-sure dP exerted by a lamina of thickness dh at a depth h ft is ex-pressed by Eq. 1 where x = volume fraction of gas at depth h dP = D (l - x)dh . . . (1) When we express x in terms of the wellhead per cent gas n, the well-head pressure p and the pressure P at depth h, the result is Eq. 2. x = (np/p+p)/(100-n) + (np/P + p) When this is substituted in Eq. 1 and rearranged to separate the var-iables the result is dh = 1/D [dp + np/100-n dp/(P + p]. Integration between appropriate lim-its results in or if the wellhead is open so that p = 1 atm and we rearrange Eq. 4, the result is loss in head = hD — P = n/100-n In (P + 1) ...(5) Eq. 5 can be solved easily by successive approximation using hD as a first approximation for P on the right-hand side and calculating a first value for loss in head. This can then be used to get a new value of P using the left-hand side of the equation. Values converge very rap-idly even for quite large values of per cent by volume gas n. EXAMPLES The effect on bottom-hole pressure of 50 per cent gas cutting of the mud in a 5,000-ft well using 10 Ib/ gal mud will be calculated, we have: h = 5,000 ft 10 X 7.48 144 X 14.7 = 0.0353 atm/ft hD = 176.5 atm n = 50 Substituting these values in Eq. 5 and using hD as a first approxima-tion of P on the right, we have, approximate loss in head = 50/50 In (176.5 + 1) = 2.30 log 177.5 = 5.17 atm. INTRODUCTION Since 1975, Union Carbide Corporation has been conducting uranium exploration in southwestern South Dakota. This program has resulted in the discovery of an ore body about eight miles north of Edgemont in Fall River County. The site which was previously mined for uranium in the 1950's and 1960's consists of 950 lode claims (approximately 20,000 acres) and is within the Black Hills National Forest. Preliminary development plans indicate that fewer than 200 surface acres will be involved in the mining and heap leaching of the ore. The ore occurs in both the Fall River and Lakota formations. The exploration to date has developed something in excess of two million tons of ore averaging -0.1% U308. About 75% of the ore is expected to be mined from underground with 25% coming from five to seven small pits. The surface mining will be extensions of previously mined areas with a disturbance of 35-40 new acres near 35-40 previously disturbed acres requiring a total reclamation of 70-80 acres. Several options for processing the ore including conventional milling by UCC, conventional milling in joint venture with another producer, and heap leaching are under consideration. This paper is concerned with the preliminary assessment of the heap leaching option based on the limited test work conducted on surface samples and on available cores from the deeper ones. The final design for a commercial operation will not be available until an underground bulk sample has been obtained and evaluated. Union Carbide has been operating heap leach facilities commercially since 1973 at Gas Hills, Wyoming and Maybell, Colorado. LAST YEAR (1934) saw the completion of a ten-year program of reconstruction and modernization of the world's largest lead- smelting plant, that of the ' Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary, at Port Pirie, South Australia, which has a capacity for smelting and refining 220,000 (short) tons of lead per year. It deals with the entire output of lead concentrates from the famous Broken Hill district in Australia, being owned .jointly by the three leading companies: North Broken Hill, Broken Hill South, and the Zinc Corporation. These companies, together with the Sulphide Corporation, are credited with a production of 198,000 tons of lead in 1934. When one says regarding any metallurgical plant that modernization is "completed" he should add "for the moment." Development in the art of metallurgy and in the equipment used never ceases; that which seems close to the last word today is likely to be obsolete in a few years even in a process so well standardized as smelting and refining lead. AN extensive study of German underground manufacturing experience is being undertaken by the Air Materiel Command. Headquarters officials consider completely underground facilities one of the most effective means of protecting aircraft production against air attacks of the strength and type employed in World War II. Advantages accruing to underground manufacturing installations other than protection are, perhaps, a smaller maintenance problem and the possibility of using gravity flow on some production lines. Offsetting these advantages are the high cost of construction, problems of ventilation, and poor acoustics. Excavation costs might well be less than the cost of enclosing the same area on the surface, as new and better methods of rock drilling and transportation are developed. Certainly the amount of building materials used would be far less than in constructing a surface plant of the same dimensions. D. C. Hilty (Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Niagara Falls, N. Y.)—This paper is a very nicely detailed analysis of a difficult problem. I would like to point out that the results that Mr. Crafts and I published a few years ago had no reference to activity, or anything else of a similar nature; our results were strictly empirical. It is quite gratifying that we now have a case where results involving activity coefficients and results derived from direct observations on actual steel melts are practically identical. When two different laboratories, working from two entirely different approaches, come out with results in such good agreement in their major significance, that is an achievement. It is something that was not possible 15 or 20 years ago. There is one question I would like to ask Dr. Chip-man. It has to do with a very minor point of disagreement in these results. When we reported the kink in the Si-O solubility curve I think you may recall that it came at the different temperature levels at about the order of 0.015 to 0.03 pct 0 and 0.03 to 0.07 pct Si—we also pointed out that we had difficulty in obtaining data at that level, although we finally did get some. I note in going through the data for the present paper, that there are no samples in those particular silicon and oxygen ranges. I wonder if that was purely accidental or was there a reason for it. D. E. Babcock (Republic Steel Corp., Youngstown, Ohio)—Mr. Hilty, do you have any explanation for that discrepancy between Dr. Chipman's curve and your own Mr. Hilty—Our explanation for it at that time was that for some reason our system probably was not in true equilibrium with SiO, that is, in equilibrium with the silica crucible at that level. We did observe, however, that that was the level at which both the metal and the slag became saturated with SiO,. On the average, in studying inclusion formation in small ingots permitted to solidify normally from the molten state, we observed pure silica inclusions at silicon contents over about 0.05 pct and FeO type inclusions at silicon

During 1966, crushed stone production in the United States totaled just over 811 million tons valued at almost $1.2 billion. This represented in- creases of 4 % in tonnage and 5 % in value over that for 1965. Excluding the crushed stone used for agricultural and certain industrial purposes (cement, lime and flux), crushed stone mineral aggregate production totaled 616.3 million tons valued at almost $910 million, also up roughly 4% in tonnage and 5% in value over the 1965 figures. Limestone was by far the most widely used rock variety, followed by basalt, granite and sandstone in that order. Concrete aggregate and roadstone continued as the main uses for stone, accounting for 63% of all tonnage produced in 1966 and 60% of total stone value. Sand and gravel production in 1966 increased 3% over that for 1965. Total 1966 output was just in excess of 934 million tons valued at almost $985 million as compared with 908 million tons at $957 million for the previous year. Excluding the higher valued industrial sands, 903.2 million tons of sand and gravel valued at $891.6 million were used directly as mineral aggregates, representing a 2.9% increase in tonnage and a 2.4% increase in value over 1965.

OPERATIONS at the cement plant of the Permanente Corporation, in the hills about 45 miles south of San Francisco and 12 miles west of San Jose, are interesting to the members because of the adoption of modern hydrometallurgical methods for handling and beneficiating raw materials. Closed-circuit grinding, classification, hydroseparation, flotation, agitation, and thickening are familiar terms at this cement plant. These methods make it possible to process refractory limestone into suitable materials for the manufacture of modern cements. Construction of the plant, having originally a design capacity of 7000 bbl. of cement per day, was started in June 1939, and the first clinker was ground on the following Christmas Day. At present the capacity is about 12,000 bbl. of finished cement per 24 hr., most of the production being low-heat cement. [t] About 3130 tons of limestone, 620 tons of clay and 100 tons of gypsum are required daily for this output. Occasionally iron oxide is added to the clay to obtain the desired composition. This, together with the gypsum, is purchased from outside sources. Up to the present time, the corporation has produced low-heat, normal, moderate-heat, moderate-sulphate-resisting, high-early-strength, oil-well, modified-oil-well, and plastic cements. Most of the present production is for Shasta Dam, near Redding, Calif., the total demand being 5.800,000 bbl. of cement. On August 4, 1844, J. C. Fremont made the first record found of coal in Wyoming. On the North Fork of the Platte River, beyond Medicine Butte, in Carbon County, he noted: "in the precipitous bluffs were displayed a succession of strata containing fossil, vegetable remains, and several beds of coal. In some of the beds, the coal did not appear to be perfectly mineralized; and in some of the seams, it was compact and remarkably lustrous." A little later he noted, "longitude 111°, latitude 4 1/2°-Muddy R.--coal."1 In 1848, Clayton reported coal on Sulphur Creek near the site of old Bear River City, in Uinta County.2 Maj. Osborne Cross in his journal, on July 1, 1849, records seeing coal on Deer Creek and in one of the hills near Crooked Muddy Creek, in Converse County; on July 7, he records that the country from Deer Creek to the Sweetwater River abounds in coal, probably in Natrona and Carbon Counties.3 A letter from Asst. Quartermaster Van Vliet to General Jessup dated July 25, 1850, asked an appropriation for building shops at Fort Laramie for making repairs for the emigrants, and mentions "coal and timber," but undoubtedly meant charcoal, as no other mention of stone coal is made in the records of the fort.4 Stansbury, in 1852, placed on his map of this section the words: "Great Coal Basin," extending from the west bank of Bear River, near the present Evanston, to Point of Rocks in Sweetwater County. In 1859, a military coal reservation was established near here, but the coal was never worked to any great extent, although probably some was hauled to Fort Bridger for smithing purposes. When the fort was abandoned this reservation returned to the public lands .2 In the same year (1859), Hayden traced the lignite formation uninterruptedly from the upper Missouri Valley to a point on the North Platte River, about 80 miles northwest of Fort Laramie.5 On August 25, 1865,

This paper. was written in conjunction with the work being undertaken by the Technical Committees on Classification of Coal, and an effort has been made to compile information relative to the use of coal for stationary steam generation in order to use this information to assist the Committee on Classification of Coal for the ultimate purpose of elimination of losses both by the' reduction of indivi-dual effort and waste in the consumption of material. Under the auspices of the National Association of Purchasing Agents, a questionnaire was drawn up to develop this information from stationary steam plants throughout the United States. in order to consolidate the information de-veloped from the many hundreds of boiler tests on coals consumed by various coal¬burning equipment. These questionnaires covered: 1. The company reporting, location and method of delivery to the plant. 2. Complete coal date, including description of coals used (with. sufficient space to- include first, second and third, preference) on--source of coal used,- complete-analysis and factors affecting choice of, coal used. 3. Plant data, divided into - A. Hand fired, B. Overfeed stokers,. . C. Underfeed stokers, D. Traveling grate stokers, E. Pulverized coal, and included complete description of furnace data, draft data, coal-burning rate, type of stoker, type of pulverizer, efficiency date and remarks.

WHEN an Fe-C alloy, partially reacted to pearl-ite, is quenched rapidly enough to suddenly stop the growth process, it may be expected that any carbon concentration gradients will freeze in situ in the newly formed martensite. A short tempering treatment should precipitate finely dispersed iron carbide particles in approximately the same distribution in which carbon existed during the growth process. Examination with the electron microscope of areas of tempered martensite adjacent to the pearlite-martensite interface should reveal the existence of preferred areas of precipitation. Fig. 1 is an example of an electron micrograph used in this study. Small sections of a commercial steel (0.9 pct C, 1.6 pct Mn, 0.25 pct Si) were austenitized at 945°C in air for 45 min, furnace-cooled to 697°C, iso-thermally reacted to pearlite for 30 min, and quenched into iced brine. Two samples were tempered 5 and 20 min, respectively, in air at 498°C and were subsequently quenched in water. The samples were mechanically polished and etched in 1 pct picral. Collodion replicas were made by the conventional technique; these were shadowed with chromium at about 650' from the horizontal, and electron micrographs were taken at a linear magnification of 14,200X. Prints were made at a magnification of 44,100X. Lineal analysis of the prints was made as a function of the interlamellar spacing and volume percent of iron carbide. Straight lines were drawn into tempered martensite between adjacent lamellae at a distance S/4 or S/6 apart, where S is defined as the interlamellar spacing measured at the pearlite-martensite interface. The volume percent of iron carbide was measured along each of these traces with a "gage length" of S/10. The results of analyses of two samples are shown in Table I. The area included between the S/2 and S distance from the interface could be considered homogeneous within the sensitivity of the measuring technique. This value was used as a proportionality factor to evaluate an arbitrary carbon content of homogeneous austenite, and also as a parameter by which error in measurements could be evaluated. The John Fritz Medal is awarded from time to time for notable scientific or industrial achievement by a board composed of representatives from the four engineering Societies. The John Fritz Medal was awarded in January, 1917, to Dr. Henry Marion Howe, for his "investigations in metallurgy, especially in the metallography of Iron and Steel." The presentation ceremonies were held in the Auditorium of the United Engineering Societies' Building, New York, on Thursday evening, May 10. Mr. Ambrose Swasey, Chairman of the John Fritz Medal Board of Award, presided, and addresses were delivered by Dr. Rossiter W. Raymond, Secretary Emeritus of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and Dr. Ira N. Hollis, President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Professor Albert Sauveur, Chairman of the Board at the time the award was made, presented the medal, and the ceremonies concluded with the response of Dr. Howe.

Erwin S. SperRy, Bridgeport, Conn.: The analysis of refined copper is a subject of great importance, and has not received the attention it deserves. Copper metallurgists, therefore, will welcome the paper of Mr. Heath with satisfaction. The state of the art of the chemical analysis of copper has been such that consumers, if they could not afford to run any risk, have been obliged to buy copper from the smelter having the best reputation, and a specification for copper to meet certain requirements could not be drawn up by the mere giving of the chemical constituents. Mr. Heath has brought the analysis of the copper to such a state that when a specification calls for copper " equal to Lake copper " one will know immediately what percentage of the pure metal to expect. It seems to be a pretty well established fact that the copper of Lake Superior is practically free from antimony and bitmuth ; and, with the exception of arsenic, the other elements are easily separated from copper by electro-deposition in an acid solution. The authorities differ in regard to the question whether antimony is deposited with the copper in an acid solution. Classen* recommends the employment of a solution containing 10 per cent. of free nitric acid, sp.gr.1.21, and the strength of the current from 0.3 to 0.4 ampere, in order to prevent the other metals from being deposited with the copper; and for this reason, I presume, the method has been generally used. I, myself, have been accustomed to use such a solution for the analysis of copper-alloys, but have found that for such alloys only a small quantity of nitric acid is necessary, if sulphuric acid is present in sufficient amount to give the solution the required conductivity.

During the last quarter of 1948, two new machines, which may revolutionize the coal mining industry, made their first public appearance within two months of each other. Both are designed to mine and load coal continuously. On Oct. 27, the "Colmol," invented by C. H. Snyder and A. E. Lamm, president and executive vice-president, respectively, of the Sunnyhill Coal Co., was demonstrated at the No. 8 mine of that Company at New Lexington, Ohio. The "Joy Continuous Miner," invented by H. F. Silver, president of the Silver Engineering Works, Denver, and developed and manufactured by the Joy Manufacturing Co., was demonstrated at the Mathies mine, near Finleyville, Pa., in the Pittsburgh coal seam.

SCHMIDT, Salt Lake City, Utah.-Any furnace that can make a chloridizing roast to yield an extraction of 92 to 93 per cent. and do this at a cost of less than 24c. per ton in a 10-ton unit opens great possibilities for the treatment of certain classes of ores. This cost does not include the salt and will be reduced to about 16 1/2c. per ton in the 35-ton furnace which are now being designed. On a trial run the roaster treated 9.6 ton: of Ontario stope fillings crushed to pass a ¼ -in. opening. The ore is well adapted to chlorination with the exception of insufficient sulphur and occasional days of high lime, but is not adapted to any other process The following is an analysis of the crude ore: Ag, 9.52; Au, 0.029 oz. Pb, 0.71; Cu, 0.11; SiO, 79.4; Zn, 0.57; S, 1.00; Fe, 7.9; Mn, 0.89 CaO, 1.20 per cent. The composition of the mix was: Per Cent. EXPLORATION for deep-seated orebodies in the Silver Belt area of the Coeur d'Alene mining district is complicated by meager surface expressions of diagnostic criteria, lack of knowledge of the significance of specific alteration phenomena, and the great expense involved in the exploration for ore shoots, the tops of which often occur near sea level elevation or below and as much as 4000 ft or more below the surface. Except for the early studies of Ransome and Calkins in 1903 and 1904,' little geological work was done in the Coeur d'Alene district for many years, and it is only during the last 15 to 20 years that complete and careful geological mapping has been applied to most of the mines in the area. Much early information, which now would prove invaluable, is lost in hundreds of miles of caved and inaccessible mine openings not mapped by mining geologists. In more recent years mining geology has become a tool of greater use in the district, and some measurable progress is being made in the accumulation of observations that are adding gradually to the knowledge of ore deposits in the district. The recognition of alteration phenomena and related features by Hoyt S. Gale3 in 1935, followed by the work of Shenon and McConnel in 1936-37,4 changed many of the concepts formerly held and opened the way for more critical study and mapping of alteration effects. Mapping of these effects has been in progress for several years but no well-organized, careful, and complete laboratory study of the alteration has been made by mining companies or by government agencies. Recently, Thomas Mitcham of Columbia University has been occupied in the collection and study of specimens carefully selected from several producing mines in the Silver Belt as well as from several prospects exhibiting alteration effects. Mr. Mitcham and the writer have discussed some of the preliminary results of his investigations, which indicate that definite and interesting material is forthcoming from his studies. Work of this kind, aided by careful observation by district geologists, should advance the knowledge of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots and establish additional criteria for recognizing meager shallow expressions of deep-lying orebodies. Structural details in the Silver Belt area are extremely difficult to decipher on the surface because the area is almost completely covered by a deep mantle of surface debris and soil. A dense growth of small trees and buck brush adds to a geologist's difficulties. Often large areas reveal only scattered small outcrops with great intervening areas where the underlying formations must be deduced from small altered rock fragments. Some considerable success in obtaining surface information has come from bulldozer roads and cuts in selected areas. As this type of work receives more attention, knowledge of the surface expressions of formations, alterations, faulting, and veining is expanding and giving more reliable information to guide deeper development. Lack of diagnostic marker beds in the district contributes to a geologist's difficulties in determining fault displacements. In the Silver Belt, known commercally important sulphide orebodies commonly are associated with siderite and quartz gangue. Some of the veins at shallow horizons above productive ore shoots are composed of quartz with light-colored carbonate minerals such as calcite, ferrocalcite, ferrodolomite, ankerite, and carbonates with variable amounts of manganese. The relation of these carbonates to commercial orebodies is a problem offering possibilities for research. Shallow exposures of veins composed of quartz and the light-colored carbonates, often with some associated barite, grade into quartz and siderite veins at deeper horizons. The vertical range of these carbonates has been partially established for some veins, but no reliable method has been devised for predicting where the change in a vein may take place. Careful observation and analysis of carbonates may make it possible to predict more closely where the change to siderite may be expected. In 1926 Shannon5 pointed out some of the characteristics of the carbonate veins of the district and included a few chemical analyses. Some of the Silver Belt ore shoots have small commercial outcrops, and very shallow development of some properties has led to the opening of small ore shoots." Several small ore shoots developed at shallow depths have not been explored at deep horizons, and some important ore shoots with no commercially significant exposures at shallow horizons have been developed. The greatest problem of the mining geologist working in the Silver Belt area is to find the all-important link between the very meager shallow expressions of mineralization and the rich ore shoots that may be found below. To develop criteria for use in the recognition of the weak upper expression of ore shoots, the experience of past development programs must be relied upon heavily. The investment of more than a million dollars in the exploration for such ore shoots requires some reliable criteria if these ore shoots are to be found. Management needs some assurance that the risk involved is justified by well-developed and acceptable geological inference. The richness of some of the ore shoots found thus far has contributed greatly to the justification for a bold approach, but many negative results of blind exploration programs would lead eventually to extreme caution on the part of management. Fortunately, recent experiences of development programs have been quite successful. It is hoped that added knowledge. of the environment of Silver Belt ore shoots will contribute greatly to the sureness of approach toward their development. This chapter is concerned with the uses, geology, exploration, evaluation, preparation for markets, and future of 90thorium and 39yttrium, along with 14 rare-earth elements. The rare-earth metals or lanthanides were divided into three categories by Berzelius. The cerium subgroup is comprised of 57lanthanum, 58cerium, 59praseodymium, 60neodymium, and 62samarium. 61Promethium does not occur naturally. The terbium subgroup includes 63europium, 64gadolinium, and 65terbium. The remaining lanthanides are placed in the yttrium subgroup. Strictly speaking, yttrium is not a rare earth. Because the properties of yttrium resemble those of heavy rare earths, its name has been used as a designating adjective. The yttrium subgroup includes 66dysprosium, 67holmium, 68erbium, 69thulium, 70ytterbium, and 67lutetium. Rare-earth elements, especially those of the same subgroup, tend to occur together rather than in discrete minerals.
