THE John Fritz Medal Board of Award, at its regu¬lar annual meeting Oct. 19, awarded its gold medal to Herbert Clark Hoover. Thus ended a process of selection begun a few years ago. The award was tentatively made a year ago by the Board, which is composed of sixteen recent past-presidents of the four national societies of Civil, Mining and Metallurgical, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers, having together a membership of nearly 60,000. The sixteen members of the Board are: American Society of Civil Engineers : C. E. Grunsky, Robert Ridgway, George S. Davison and John F. The hydrostatic tensions in pure metals and long freezing range alloys are evaluated theoretically considering the viscous flow of residual liquid and the general plastic collapse of the casting. The former mechanism operates until the radii of the remaining liquid channels are of the order of 10-3 cm radius, after which the second process limits the attainable negative pressures which range from —1500 to -4200 atm for nickel, aluminum, copper, and iron. In previous reports1'2 the maximum possible hydrostatic tensions developed during solidification have been evaluated employing spherical symmetry. This inevitably involves the concept of totally confined liquid regions, the reality of which has recently been brought into serious doubt3 following observations of the freezing of various transparent materials. Regions of interdendritic liquid which are apparently about to be isolated by the growth of dendrite arms are observed not to be cut off because the advance of the dendrite tips is arrested until the region has completely solidified. Although this may be the result of the very low melting point liquid available at this late stage in freezing, or the result of a higher rate of heat transfer to the dendrite tips because of the acceleration in liquid flow rate near the completion of solidification, this point need not concern us. In this paper an attempt is made to approximate more closely to real conditions; thus the assumption of confined liquid regions is abandoned and cylindrical symmetry adopted. It has also been necessary, therefore, to consider the viscous flow of residual liquid through the remaining channels in the pasty zone. Furthermore, the rather special conditions of spherically symmetric solidification led to extremely high solidification rates and hence unusually high tensile stresses as solidification neared completion; the cylindrical Symmetry appears to yield solidification rates and stresses which are more typical of real castings. The rate of solidification is first considered since this critically affects both the flow of the liquid and the creep of the solid.

While professiorlally engaged in the oil- and gas-fields of Kansas, in measuring the pressure and flow of gas-wells, and studying the phenomena attendant upon the production of both oil and gas, I noticed in the flow of gas a peculiar and interesting feature. That there are actual lines of flow in liquids (non-compressible fluids) discharged through an orifice, or a short section of pipe, is shown by the external shape of the discharge—the vena contracts. Such lines of flow are not observable in the discharge of gas from an orifice. It can hardly be questioned that they exist. That they are not apparent is probably due to the very small weight of the gaseous particles, which climinishes the momentum of their movement in a given direction, acquired before they issue from the orifice, and also to the expansion of the gases, which would exert a powerful influence in overcoming any such tendency in their flow. Gas flowing from an orifice, supplied by a large reservoir or blowing-engine, exhibits almost the reverse of what is noticed with liquids. Namely, the gas assumes the form of an inverted truncated cone, of large angle: with its apex-end at the orifice. (See BB, Fig. 1.) This external ahape assunled by the flow of gas shows, however, marked differences under varying conditions of volume and pressure. For instance, a large volume of gas under high pressure, flowing through a 2- or 3-in. pipe, as in the case of a natural gas-well, assumes a more definite conical form, the angle of which increases as the pressure falls. A NEW LINE of specialists has arisen as a result of the trend toward labor socialization and collectivism in all branches of industry. These men are the ones who will govern the destiny of many companies and the labor policy of our government in coming years. They must be men of integrity and of rather exceptional qualifications; men who can foresee the trend of labor relations with business, and who are willing to sacrifice the immediate fruits of technical training for manual labor and study. They must take their place in industry, not with the idea of following the orthodox line of advancement, but knowing that they must stay at the bottom until they have learned to understand the viewpoints, the work, the advantages and the disadvantages of each classification of labor. They must not be of a radical nature or become easily biased, and they must study. You will say I am looking for a superman and in one sense that is true, but the business man and our government are both in the market even now for this type of man, and with the proper training and background, many of our young technicians can readily enter this field of work.

HE State of Utah has an area of 84,990 sq. mi., and like other inland states in the West its population, although steadily increasing, is relatively small. The fact that it is a state possessing vast mineral resources is attested by a careful study of statistics which have been compiled by Federal and State investigators. Some idea of the extent of these resources and the degree of development of a particular state or region may be gained by such a study, but in the case of Utah statistics and other available information fail to portray completely the true extent and value of its existing metallic and non-metallic resources. The State is probably more widely known for its production of metallic ores which has placed it in an eminent position among the metal mining states of the Nation.

MUCH progress has been made in recent years in the theory and practice of making stainless steel. By effective utilization of oxygen for decar-burization and more suitable alloying agents, it has been possible to attain consistent production of very low-carbon stainless steel. In order to facilitate economical production of stainless steels, the Electro Metallurgical Co. has carried out an extended experimental program that has clarified some of the complex interrelations of temperature and composition under decarburizing and reducing conditions. These results'-:' have been founded in large part on small experimental heats, and in order to confirm their validity and significance under commercial conditions, a survey of stainless steel melting practice has been made with the cooperation of stainless steel producers. Conditions required for decarburization and associated oxidation of chromium, manganese, and iron have been fairly well established in relation to the beneficial effect of the highest practicable temperature. The recovery of chromium and manganese from highly oxidized slags by reduction with silicon has been indicated with somewhat less precision and this study has shown significant deviation in large commercial heats from the small experimental heats. In spite of an unsatisfactory degree of accuracy in estimating the conditions affecting reduction of metallic values, it has been possible to calculate a slag weight in reasonably good agreement with the results observed in large heats. While there still is much to be learned about both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of stainless steel melting, this survey has indicated the manner by which the efficiency of the production process may be measured. Oxidation Period In order to establish practices for the recovery of chromium and manganese from the slag the amounts of these metals oxidized should be known. Moreover, since reduction of oxidized chromium and manganese must necessarily be accompanied by similar reduction of iron, knowledge of the total quantity of metallics oxidized is essential. The relations between carbon, chromium, and temperature under oxidizing conditions were developed by Hilty in 1948.' While it had been realized previously that retention of chromium in the metal during carbon oxidation is favored by high temperatures, the Hilty relation provided quantitative information useful for evaluating melting procedures. For example, it was shown that decarburization to moderate carbon levels can be achieved while retaining substantial amounts of chromium. However, in decarburizing to the low-carbon level necessary for producing 0.03 pct maximum carbon stainless steel, very little chromium remains in the bath at the temperatures generally employed. For this reason, Hilty, Healy, and Crafts' later projected an extension of the chromium-carbon relation to the low-chromium region. Although this chromium-carbon-temperature relation defined the composition of a chromium steel bath at the end of the oxidizing period, it did not provide a direct means for estimating the total amount of metallic oxidation occurring during decarburization of a stainless steel heat. This subject was investigated by Crafts and Rassbach³ and, later, by Hilty, Healy, and Crafts" who demonstrated that metallic oxidation is a function of the chromium content of the initial furnace charge, the minimum carbon content attained, and the temperature. It was further demonstrated from data on 1-ton heats that an empirical relationship exists between the ratio of chromium plus manganese to iron in the slag (S) to the corresponding ratio of these components present in the metal bath. The following expression was derived to permit the calculation of the amount of metallics oxidized during decarburization of a given charge: W-2000 (Cr1 + Mn1)-(Cr2 + Mn2) 1 100s/s+1-(Cr3 + Mn2) where W is the pounds of chromium, manganese, and iron oxidized per ton of charge; Cr1, the percentage of chromium in the charge; Mn1, the percentage of manganese in the charge; Cr2, the percentage of chromium in the bath after oxidation; Mn2, the percentage of manganese in the bath after % Cr + % Mn oxidation; and S =%cr+ % Mn/%Fe in the slag after %Fe oxidation. In order to establish whether the slag ratios of commercial heats are consistent with those found in the experimental heats, the slag and metal analyses shown in Table I were evaluated. These data represent samples taken after the oxidation of two 1-ton and seven 15 to 25-ton heats of types 303, 304, and 304L stainless steel made in chromite, acid, and basic hearths. Fig. 1 illustrates that the results for the commercial heats correlate reasonably well with the relationship originally established for experimental 1-ton heats. The detailed study of barium activation led to an interpretation based on ideal Langmuirian chemisorption.

The temperature has been measured ahead of stationary solid-liquid interfaces under conditions approximating luzidirectional heat flow and therefore unidirectional solidification. Natural convection flow patterns may be deduced from the temperature distributions , temperature fluctuations, and shape of the interface. Fluid flow increases with the height and the rate of heat transfev through the interface and this is further manifested by a deviation of the interface from aflat vertical plane. The influence of fluid flow on solute inhomogeneity during alloy crystal growth can be inferred from the observed temperature distributions. A buoyancy force exists in the liquid ahead of a vertical solid-liquid interface, caused by a difference in density between cold fluid near the interface and warmer fluid in the bulk liquid. When the viscous and inertia forces in the melt exceed this buoyancy force, a flow of fluid takes place, termed natural or free thermal convection. Natural convection in purely liquid systems has been extensively studied for many years. 1"u On the other hand, fluid flow during horizontal crystal growth has oniy recently been the subject of experimental investigation."-25 The requirements for horizontal crystal growth differ from other heat flow systems. The small aspect ratio (ratio of height of cold wall to length of fluid) has never been considered. The uniform furnace gradient which supplies heat radially (and not necessarily symmetrically) differs from previous boundary conditions of uniform heat flux at the cold and hot ends. And most important of all an isothermal s/l interface is present which can adjust its shape and position to conform to heat and fluid flow. All of these boundary conditions involve complexities which cannot be readily solved analytically. Preliminary observation has demonstrated the penera1 shape of the natural convective flow pattern in transparent media.20'24'25 The flow is circulatory, directed toward the interface at the surface of the liquid, down and away from the interface at the bottom, and then up at the hot end of the melt. During crystal growth such a flow may interact with the solute boundary layer at the s/l interface to affect solute incorporation.M'1B|28'i!T Evidence has also been presented recently to show that thermal convective flow will affect the structure of ca~tin~s.~~-~~ The rate of heat transfer (conduction plus convection) in a given fluid system is a function of the temperature difference between the hot end of the liquid and the s/l interface and the height of the interface. When the temperature difference or interface height are increased, laminar fluid flow commences and heat transport takes place by laminar convection as well as by conduction; turbulent heat transfer takes place at higher values of these variables. In the transition region between laminar and turbulent flow, boundary layer separation takes place; fluctuations in temperature are also noted and increase in amplitude and frequency as turbulence becomes dominant. In this paper, fluid flow patterns in the melt ahead of a stationary interface are deduced from observations of temperature distribution and fluctuations, heat flow rate, and interface shape. The fluid flow ahead of advancing interfaces and the effect of such flow on solute incorporation may be inferred from these measurements on stationary interfaces. Observations during enforced fluid motion will also be considered. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The metal was contained in a lava boat 10 cm in length, 1+ cm in width, and 2 cm in height, as shown in Fig. 1. A water-cooled, molybdenum block heat-sink is at one end of the boat; surrounding this assembly is a slotted stainless-steel tube noninductively wound with a nichrome heating element. Temperature was measured by 38-gage Chrome1 vs Alumel thermocouples sheathed in 0.05-cm-diam graphite-coated stainless-steel tubing, which were moved longitudinally and vertically through the melt by means of a two-dimensional motorized micrometer stage. In some experiments the thermocouple junction was exposed, but in the majority of experiments the junction was welded to the sheath tip; no significant difference

THE Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (Public Law 552, 82nd Congress) was approved on July 16, 1952. It incorporates, as Title I, the Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of May 7, 1941 (Public Law 49, 77th Congress), which gave Federal inspectors only the right to enter coal mines for inspection and investigation purposes but no power to require compliance with their recommendations. Title II contains the enforcement provisions of the act; its purpose is to prevent major disasters in coal mines from explosions, fires, inundations, and man-trip or man-hoist accidents. At this point a brief account of events that pre- ceded the enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act seems appropriate. The hazardous nature of coal mining was recognized by the Federal Government as long ago as 1865, when a bill to create a Federal Mining Bureau was introduced in Congress. Little was done, however, until a series of appalling coal- mine disasters during the first decade of this century provoked a demand for Federal action. As a result an act of Congress established a Bureau of Mines in the Department of the Interior on July 1, 1910. The act made it clear that one of the foremost activities of the Bureau should be to improve health and safety in the mineral industries. One of the first projects selected by the small force of engineers and technicians then employed was to determine the causes of coal-mine explosions and the means to prevent them. By investigations after mine disasters the fundamental causes and means of prevention were soon discovered, and the coal mining industry was informed accordingly. However, despite this knowledge and the enactment of State laws and the Federal Coal Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of 1941, mine disasters continued to occur with disheartening frequency and staggering loss of life. The devastating explosion at the Orient No. 2 mine on December 21, 1951, resulted in the death of 119 men. The Orient disaster rekindled the memory of the Centralia, I11., disaster of March 25, 1947, which caused the death of 111 coal miners. These two tragedies ultimately brought about enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act.

THE CHAIRMAN (G. H. CLEVENGER, Stanford University, Cal.).¬I would like to ask Mr. Pyne if he has had any experience inn the use of chromite as refractory under conditions that are highly reducing? I am reminded of an experience I once had with an electric furnace. I imagined that chromite would form a splendid lining, but it soon disappeared; hence it seems probable that, under highly reducing conditions at a high temperature, chromite is a very poor refractory. F. R. PYNE.-In copper smelting the atmosphere is generally neutral, or slightly oxidizing; we do not use highly reducing atmospheres at all, not even in the matting furnace. You can take the chromite brick and treat it as you would an iron ore, obtaining ferro-chrome very readily, from which the copper will separate. We have done this; in fact, at one time we considered installing a small electric furnace for the production of ferro-chrome. FOREST RUTHERFORD, New York, N. Y.-During the time I was general superintendent at the smelter of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co., at Douglas, Ariz., a great many experiments were made on the furnaces and settlers with different kinds of brick, and I agree with Mr. Pyne's statements about chrome brick. Their power to absorb metals is very great, and as they cannot be smelted at any temperatures obtainable in a copper furnace, to get rid of the bats and extract the metal from them is quite a problem. We finally got down to using chrome brick only for lining the settlers, out of which we often got a life of upwards of 2 years, and for lining the blast-furnace bottoms, for the reason that chrome brick can be heated and wet, or wet after being heated, without going to pieces, whereas under these conditions magnesite brick will break down very rapidly. We also used a layer of chrome brick above and below an 18-in. band of magnesite brick put on the slag line of the reverberatories, in order to separate the magnesite from the silica brick, fearing that they would slag each other and let the wall drop. The idea worked, but became unnecessary on account of a change made in the method of feeding the furnaces. Chronic brick will not stand up under pressure so well as a good Grecian or Austrian magnesite brick, on account of the poorer bonding properties of the materials from which the chrome brick is made.

Resistant Tape A new oil-resistant tape for rapid insulation build-up on splices in large power cables has been announced by Minnesota Mining & Mfg. Co. Designated Scotch brand electrical tape No. 25 is made of synthetic rubber providing greater dielectric strength and resistance to high temperatures. The chemical-resistant qualities of the tape make it suitable for use in oil drilling, mining and underground [ ] cable operations, while the 40-mil thickness and extreme stretch (1500 pct breaking point) make possible smooth insulation wraps on irregular surfaces. Dielectric strength is 15,000 v and 10,000 v at 500 pct elongation. It has an electrolytic corrosion factor of 1.0 and an insulation resistance of 100,000 megohms. Circle No. 1 Hydra-Lift The Pitman Mfg. Co. announces that is now has in production a new model of the Pitman hydra-lift, recently-developed crane with hydraulically-powered boom that can be mounted on the frame of any truck, 1 ½ tons or larger. According to the manufacturer, the new model hydralift model B features a variety of improvements over the original production model, introduced late in 1950. Changes incorporated in the new model, according to officials, not only have resulted in improved crane, but also have given the unit a new profile which distinguishes it sharply from the original model. The two chief improvements in the new model are: a big increase in the unit's safety margin and the fact that it is now shipped almost completely preassembled, cutting the time and cost of installation. Rated capacities of the hydra-lift are based on the tipping factor of a 1 1/2 ton truck, with outriggers down, and thus have not been increased. Circle No. 2

D.G. Wilder I found the suggestion that the amount of displacement of a fault can be numerically related to the thickness of gouge or breccia to be both intuitively satisfying and intriguing. I have long agreed that there is some type of relationship between the amount of gouge and the amount of displacement of faults. I congratulate the author for developing a numerical relationship between them. However, I am concerned that the limits for applying this relationship be fully understood. An underlying assumption in this approach is that there is either a uniform thickness of gouge or breccia along a given fault or the thickness does not vary widely. Since it is not always possible to confirm this, the displacements derived by this method should be viewed with caution unless significant fault extent can be observed. At the Nevada Test Site, in drifts constructed in granite for test emplacement of spent nuclear reactor fuel, we found a fault with 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) of clay gouge. Within a few meters of this location, the fault had no clay gouge, but rather consisted of a highly fractured zone with significantly altered rock and some slickensides. Based on Fig. 1, the 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) thickness of gouge would indicate a displacement in excess of 30 m (98 ft). However, no gouge thickness would indicate essentially no displacement. Based on a quartz vein that terminated on the fault, and is not identified nearby, an estimated displacement of more than a few meters was made. This estimate is consistent with that obtained using the regression line proposed in the paper if the 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) thickness for the gouge is used. However, using the regression curves with zero thickness would not yield results consistent with what was observed in the field. Therefore, it is important to recognize that the suggested procedure would properly yield a range of probable displacements. ? *Work performed under the auspices of the US Department of Energy by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under Contract W-7405-Eng-48. Reply by E.C. Robertson It is certainly true that the t (thickness) of gg-bx (gouge and breccia) on a fault does vary along the fault. My observations have been that near the termination of a fault, the displacement d is small and the t is also small, whereas the maximum d and t will usually be found in the central part of the fault. The information on gg-bx and t of the fault found in granite in the NTS tunnel by Mr. Wilder could be interpreted somewhat differently than he does. He speaks of the fault changing within a few meters from 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) of clay gg to "a highly fractured zone with significantly altered rock and some slickensides," but no gg. The highly fractured rock may be taken to be bx, rock not so finely ground as gg but still crushed by the fault movement, equivalent to the gg in my usage, and probably occupying about the same t. Mr. Wilder's estimates for the fault in the NTS tunnel for t of 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) and for d of a quartz vein, in excess of "a few meters," would place the point on the low side of the central trend line in my Fig. 1, at the lower limit. There is, of course, a problem with determining d using displacement of only one planar surface. It would be greater or lesser depending on the rake of the movement. Finally, estimating the d of a fault from its t should be made with awareness of our present uncertainties, as pointed out by Mr. Wilder. Although the central trend line in my Fig. 1 has a ratio of d/t of 100, I have put the limiting ratios at 10 and 1000. Understanding of the values of the ratio will be improved only with collection of more data, for which the discussion of Mr. Wilder is much appreciated. ? G.C. Waterman E.C. Robertson's paper provides significant information to a geologist attempting to deduce fault offset by noting the products of structural dislocation. However, considerable mapping in underground and open-pit mines, and examination of structures produced in different geological settings, have convinced me that gouge and breccia thickness are controlled by geological conditions and fault movement. The following paragraphs suggest geological variables that control them. 1. Depth of Loading A near-surface fault resulting from tensional stress has more breccia/gouge than is produced by a similar stress at considerable depth. A deep-loaded compressional stress may produce a linear zone of schist, or structural dislocation may occur along an earlier formed belt of schist. Such "shear zones" are common in Canadian mines in precambrian rocks. In neither case can offset be directly deduced by an analysis of the minimal gouge/breccia in the shistose rocks. At greater depth, stress may be partially to wholly relieved by flowage. I vividly recall first noting the regional "Midas Thrust" in the Lark mine, Bingham Mining District, UT (where we called the structure the North Fault). My recorded notes, as I remember them, showed a narrow gouge streak separated the "Jordan" and "Commercial" limestone units from impure, muddy limestone beds of uncertain stratigraphic position. The visible structure did not indicate the great importance of this premineral fault

The term Boulder batholith was first applied in 1897 by W. H. Weed2 to the extensive mass of granite in western Montana within whose borders occur the ore deposits of Butte. In a general way this was known to extend from Helena on the north to the Highland Mountains near Butte on the south, and to be relatively narrow in its east-west diameter. Its intrusive relations to the surrounding sedimentary rocks, and its probable Tertiary age, were described by Weed, but in many ways his statements, based upon incomplete data, have required revision. Most notable of the errors of this description of the batholith were the failure,3 since corrected, to recognize the intrusive contact of the granite with the capping of andesite, and the complete absence of any reference to the many extensions of the granite beyond the somewhat narrow limits of its largest exposure.

The electrical resistivity of rocks has been studied quite extensively, in particular, the effects of temperature and confining pressure on resistivity. References 1 through 6 at the end of this chapter pertain to electrical resistivity of rock and contain further references on the same topic. The present study is motivated by an interest in determining the in-situ properties of rock as well as the stress state of the rock and how these quantities are changing with time. Most of the previous work on the electrical resistivity of rocks has been directed toward saturated rocks at relatively high confining pressures and temperatures. The present study was oriented towards air-dry surface rock that might occur in mine pillars. The mean stress and temperature under such conditions are comparatively low. It has been demonstrated that the resistivity of rock is highly dependent upon the porosity. In fact, for saturated rocks, a relationship referred to as Archie's law has been established between porosity and electrical resistivity. In the case of saturated rock, the property that is actually being measured is the resistivity of the solid/fluid system. Since the resistivity of the fluid alone is usually much lower than that of the dry rock, it is understandable that the resistivity of a saturated rock is in general several orders of magnitude lower than the resistivity of a relatively dry rocli. For dry rock, it seems reasonable that the electrical resistivity should increase as microcracks open within the material. Since microcracks open as material is stressed closer and closer to its failure point, it appears that there should be a correlation between electrical resistivity

THE physical properties of oil-producing sands, such as grain size, porosity, and permeability, are becoming more and more important in petroleum production engineering as oil fields are being repressured and rejuvenated. A number of excellent papers have been published recently on all three of these properties. Faucher, Lewis and Barnes1 give a com-plete survey of the work done through 1932 and contribute also much information on sands that they themselves have examined. Muskat and Botset,2 Wykoff, Botset, Muskat and Reed,3 Hurst,4 and Muskat5 have contributed a great deal to the theory and actual measurement of flow of liquids and gases through porous media. Muskat and Botset have measured the permeabilities of different sands with gases and liquids. They find that the radial is always slightly under the linear permeability. However, in most of the previous experiments small samples of the sand were used, and the method of production of fluid or gas through the sands has not been very close to actual oil-field conditions. In addition, so far as the authors are aware, no measurements of linear and radial permeabilities have been made simultaneously under exactly the same conditions. The multiple permeability apparatus described here is a part of the equipment being acquired by this laboratory for thorough investigation of the physical properties of producing sands. It possesses certain advantages for comparative studies of liquid flow. Additional data and descriptions of other instruments will follow in papers to be written later on. During the past few years considerable interest has been shown in the study of fiber, and its effect, in wrought metals. Fiber has recently been defined as a "condition of parallelism of important lines or details in the structure."' Briefly stated, two distinct types of fiber are commonly encountered. One results from the alignment in the direction of working of constituents, more or less segregated, such as slag, oxides, carbides and dendritic formations. The second, and least understood, type is produced by working the metal below the recrystallization temperature in such a way as to develop a parallelism of the grains. This condition is readily recognized by the pronounced elongation of the grains in the direction of working. Under certain deformational treatments the grain fragments produced by cold working tend to orient in certain definite directions with respect to the axis of extension. Furthermore, even in metals that have been annealed after cold working preferred orientations may be present. It is perhaps logical to assume that such marked parallelism of structural elements would be manifested by directional properties in the metal. As a matter of fact, tests on many kinds of materials have shown differences in varying degrees. In recognition of this condition, proper design, for many purposes, places the fiber axis in such a way as to present the direction of maximum strength to the greatest applied stress. Earlier Investigations Howe2 has written at considerable length regarding the causes and practical significance of fiber in steel and wrought iron. His studies showed that wrought iron and the puddled steel sheets (materials of plastic origin) were weaker transversely than longitudinally. The transverse deficit ranged from 5 to 29 per cent. One of the principal factors that have contributed to the hesitancy of design engineers to use metal-powder parts is the difficulty experienced in the determination of the mechanical properties of compacted components. Because standard test methods cannot usually be applied in the inspection of such parts, and because adequate special test methods have not been developed, it has been considered desirable to investigate the methods that are applicable. These may then be included in specifications for metal-powder materials and components in order that the design engineer may be assured that the subject parts possess the desired mechanical properties for satisfactory performance. It is known that direct relationships exist between usually nonmeasurable properties as tensile strength and elongation and shear strength and the angle through which compacts may be plastically deformed before fracturing. These correlations are valuable in the inspection of specific parts, but it is necessary to set up standards before they may be satisfactorily employed. Apart from the use of correlations, the number and character of the inspection methods that are applicable to almost all powder parts is limited to three—chemical analysis, density, and hardness. The last of these may or may not be a pertinent characteristic, since the indentation hardness of many powdeied-metal materials is so low as to have little significance. It is, however, occasionally desirable to use hardness measurements as an indication of the uniformity of the structure of pieces of a given type. Chemical analysis reveals very little about the physical properties of metal-powder compacts, since the unpressed powder is usually of a composition almost identical with that of the finished pieces. Density determinations are simple to perform and have the advantage of being nondestructive in character. If the dimensions of a machine part are known (and usually they are), the average density may be determined by weighing a given number of pieces and dividing by the calculated volume of the parts. More accurate measurements may be made by the water-displacement method. It is recognized that mechanical properties of metal-powder materials are related to their density, but usually these relations are determined for only one type of powder, processed under a given set of conditions. Comparisons of the pioperties of compacts formed from different types of powders are made on the basis of compacting pressures instead of density, and for this reason the results obtained by using powders of different types appear widely variant.
