It is desired to call the attention of young men who have had technical training and experience to the fact that their abilities can best be put at the service of the country by selecting a branch of service in which their special qualifications will be of the greatest use. The submarine force of the United States Navy requires the services, as officers on board submarines, of young men who have had technical training in mechanical and electrical engineering and who have had experience in these professions. It is intended to enroll a number of such men as provisional ensigns in the Naval Reserve Force, give then a course of instruction in deck duties at Annapolis and a course in submarine work at New London. Those who successfully pass these courses will then be sent on hoard submarines for regular duty. It is requested that any men who desire this duty and who are qualified as below outlined send their names and addresses to the Commander Submarine Force, U. S. S. Chicago, care of Postmaster, New York. Qualifications required: Desire to serve in submarines. Degree of M. E. E. E., or E. M. Two and one-half years' practical experience in profession. The terms "cable bolting," "extended ground support," and "grouted cable" are synonymous, and they have been popping up with much more regularity in the mining engineer s vocabulary. In simplest terms, lengths of u itensioned cable up to 18.3 m (60 ft) are grouted in drill holes prior to mining. This permits radical departures from mining practices that rely on conventional rock reinforcement. For example, by placing a pattern of cable bolts in the back of an open stope, ore can be mined in successive slices. After each slice is taken the protruding cable; are simply cut off and mining proceeds. When about 4.6 m (15 ft) of reinforced back remains, a crew places a new par tern of cable bolts in the ore.

The Carlin gold deposit is located in northeastern Nevada about thirty-five miles by road from the town of Elko. Following the staking of six square miles 'of ground, a drilling program outlined a fine ore body mineable by open pitting. The resulting mine turned out to be the largest open-pit gold operation in the world, until the Rosario Pueblo Viejo operation was started in 1975. Because of the high profitability forecast at the then $35 gold price, construction of a 2000 stpd mill was commenced on a crash program and was completed for Newmont Mining Corporation by Bechtel Corporation in ten months. Production was started in early 1965. The gold mineralization occurs in marine-type sediments, chiefly silt- stones and limey shales, and the ore characteristics make for a difficult materials-handling problem. At 5% to 6% moisture the ore is dusty during crushing, but even a light rain or snowfall virtually turns the material into a slurry. Crushing this sticky ore below 314 in. (19 mm) in the dry season and 1 in. (25.4 m) during the winter is extremely difficult and leads to problems with conveyors, chutes, and fine ore storage. The initial flowsheet for Carlin's crushing plant used a 5 ft by 22 ft (1.52 m by 6. 7 m) vibrating feeder -grizzly under the 60 -ton dump pocket for feeding the 42 in. by 48 in. (1067 mm by 1220 mm) single toggle jaw crusher and a 5 ½ ft (1.52 m) standard cone crusher in closed circuit with a 6 ft by 12 ft (1.83 m by 3.66 m) vibrating double - deck screen. Because continual packing of fines in the vibrating feeder pan would cause frequent plant shut-downs to remove the fines with jack hammers, the decision was made to replace the vibrating unit with an apron feeder and stationary grizzly ahead of the jaw crusher. A dribble belt was also installed under the apron feeder. This installation has greatly improved the feeding of the pit run ore to the .primary jaw crusher. Mining at Carlin is done by a 5 yd shovel and 7 ½ and 10 yd front-end loaders, and ore transport is by several sizes of trucks from 30 to 75 tons capacity. These pit haulage trucks dump onto stockpiles adjacent to the primary crusher. Ore is then fed to the dump hopper by front- end loaders only when the crushing plant is operating. This extra handling procedure is necessary because plant delays caused by problems with wet ore in the secondary crusher resulted in the ore setting up or packing in the dump pocket. The great Bingham Canyon mine and mill complex of Magna, Arthur, and Bonneville had their beginning in a 300 ton per day operation which was commenced by Daniel C. Jackling and his associates in 1904 as the Utah Copper Company. This small plant was quickly expanded to 500 tons per day and eventually Kennecott, the Utah Copper successor, was processing about 45,000 tons per day of ore in each of its mills, Magna and Arthur. Finally, in 1966, the Bonneville crushing and grinding plant was added to produce a slurry of ground ore for flotation concentration at the expanded Magna and Arthur mills. Bonneville is one of the few railroad dump primary gyratory crushing plants constructed in recent years; another which is described in this Monograph is Cuajone in Peru, started in 1976. Two others are the Climax Henderson unit and the Phelps Dodge Tyrone crusher, which has been fed by trucks since it commenced operation. The Bonneville, Henderson, and Cuajone crushers are all located considerable distances from their mines, hence the use of rail haulage. Shovels in the Bingham pit are 8 to 15 yd capacity; and ore is sent to the Bonneville crusher in 100 ton rail cars, where they are dumped, two at a time, by a hydraulically driven rotary dumper. Ahead of the 54 in. by 74 in. Allis-Chalmers gyratory are two grizzlies, each 27 ft 9 in. (8.46 m) long with bar spacings of 4 ½ in. (114 mm) at the feed end and 6 in. (152 mm) at the discharge end. Grizzlies are sloped at 38. Oversize rocks are re- moved from the crusher pocket by an overhead crane, and the crusher produces a nominal 6 in. (152 mm) product. Rail cars are dumped in the direction away from the crusher, and water sprays at the dumper level and in the rock boxes are used for dust suppression. There are two 72 in. by 19 ft (1.83 m by 5. 8 m) apron feeders under the 500 st cr'ushed ore pocket and two more under the grizzly undersize pocket. Feeder speeds are variable up to 72 fpm. Grizzly undersize is dropped to the feeder pocket by three shelves forming a rock ladder attached to the pocket walls. Each pair of apron feeders, one for crushed ore and one for grizzly undersize, discharge to a 72 in. (1. 83 m) picking belt for tramp removal; this belt feeds one of two 54 in. (1.37 m) feeder conveyors which in turn discharge to a 60 in. (1. 52 m) takeaway belt operating at 175-300 fpm (53.3 - 97.4 mpm). Both picking belts are equipped with metal detectors and tramp iron magnets, and a separate 30 in. (760 mm) conveyor is used to remove tramp material.

In principle, productiorl of salt from sea water is a simple operation. The sun and wind cause evaporation of sea water trapped in ponds, and what is left is principally salt. Commercial production, however, requires consideration of many factors. First is a high consistent annual rate of evaporation, as well as large areas of suitable low-lying ground close to economical shipping facilities. The south end of San Francisco Bay has these requisites. Large ponds are built, by using clamshell dredges to build up levees to a height of approximately 3 ft. on ground usually lower than sea level, so that the water may be taken in through tide gates without pumping. Ponds are divided into extremely large concentrating ponds and smeller crystallizing ponds. Approximately ten times more area is required for concentrating than for crystallizing. The concentrating ponds are irregular in shape and size but the crystallizing ponds are rectangular and fairly regular in size, to aid in harvesting. The ocean water is taken into the first of a series of concentrating ponds and gradually moved forward from pond to pond as it increase:: in density, reaehing the crystallizing area as a saturated brine. This brine is pumped into the crystallizer at the beginning of the net evaporating season, usually in May, and further evaporation causes its sodium chloride content to deposit on the bottoms of the ponds. The brine must be drawn off and a fresh supply added from time to time to prevent other undesirable salts from depositing with the sodium chloride. Harvesting usually begins near the end of August and now is accomplished almost entirely by mechanical means. After harvesting, the salt is stored in large sbockpiles until required for shipping or refining. The greatest amount is used for industrial purposes and is shipped without any processing other than screening, but all salt for domestic use produced by the Leslie Salt Co. is refined by the racuum process, giving a produet consistently testing over 09.9 per cent sodium chloride.

The effect of hydrogen peroxide (H202) on growth and respiration of Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, organisms involved in acid leaching of copper sulfide minerals and uarnium oxides, was examined. Oxygen uptake and growth by T. thiooxidans were totally inhibited after contact with 0.82 mM H202. Complete inhibition of oxygen uptake by T. ferrooxidans occurred at 8.75 mM H202, and growth was inhibited after 6 hr exposure to 2.06 mM H202. Higher concentration of H202 can be used without detriment to thiobacilli if it is dissipated prior to reaching the oxidation pond or dump surface.

at temperatures of 1150°, 1250°, and 1350°C for liquid copper sulphides ranging in composition from saturation with Cu to about 21.5 pct S. From the experimental data, activities of Cu, S, and Cu2S in the melts were calculated. Also, the results furnish a new determination of the location of the curve showing the compositions of Cu-saturoted sulphide melts in the CU-S constitution diagram. THE "white metal" made as an intermediate L product in converting copper matte to blister copper is a matte approximating Cu2S in composition. It has long been known that liquid Cu-S mattes can exist at a given temperature over an appreciable composition range, with S:Cu ratios ranging up from a lower limit corresponding to equilibrium of the matte with a liquid Cu phase. The Cu-saturated matte has somewhat less S than Cu2S, although previous measurements of the compositions of Cu-saturated mattes are not in good agreement.'" As the S:Cu ratio approaches and slightly exceeds that for Cu2S, the partial pressure of sulphur gas over the liquid matte rapidly approaches atmospheric pressure,5 so that Cu-S melts with much more S than Cu2S can be made and handled only in pressure apparatus. Accordingly, the liquid copper sulphides of interest in copper smelting and readily studied experimentally fall in a relatively narrow composi- tion range about Cu2S. The freezing points of Cu-S mattes show a maximum of 1129°C near the composition Cu, dropping to 1105oC for Cu-saturated mattes having less S and dropping under 1100°C for higher S mattes.' Estimates of the sulphur pressure and other thermodynamic properties of liquid Cu,S were made by Kelley; based on extrapolations from equilibrium measurements on solid Cu,S. More recently, Cox and coworkers' studied equilibria in the reaction: Cu,S + H, e 2Cu + H,S over the temperature range 700" to 1250°C. They measured equilibrium H2S:H2 ratios presumably with both the sulphide and the metal phase present, so that their data above the melting point of Cu,S should measure the S pressure of Cu-saturated sulphide melts. The sulphur pressures of liquid copper sulphides of several S:Cu ratios at their freezing points can be estimated from data given by Posnjak, Allen, and Merwin." However, beyond these few data, no systematic study seems to have been made of the relations of sulphur pressure and other chemical properties of liquid copper sulphides to composition and temperature. The measurements of the sulphur pressures of liquid copper sulphides reported in this paper represent a first step in the quantitative study of the chemistry of mattes. Similar work is planned on

THE first attempt to establish an equilibrium diagram of the lead-antimony series was made by Roland-Gosselin1 in 1896. This investigation classified the system as a purely eutectiferous one, with the eutectic at 12.5 per cent. antimony and 228° C. In the next year, Stead2 placed the eutectic temperature at 247° C. The error in temperature made by Roland-Gosselin, however, has been perpetuated in the literature with a remarkable degree of persistency; this value was accepted by Campbell (1902), and Ewen (1910),3 and will be found in the last edition of Desch's3 Metallography (1922). Gonterman's investigation, made in 1907, was the most complete one available at the time the present investigation was started. He concluded' that the system was a simple eutectiferous one and placed the eutectic at 13 per cent. antimony and 247°C. Other investigations by Tammann (1907),5 Garbow (1909),6 Rudolfi (1910),7 Loebe (1911),8 and Leroux (1913)9 added little, if any-thing, to Gonterman's diagram. When an alloy solidifies and the composition of the solid differs from the composition of the liquid, atoms of the alloying elements rejected at the solid-liquid interface have to diffuse toward the bulk liquid. Diffusion may be supported by convection. Theoretical calculations have been made for a liquid without convection, for a liquid involving natural convection, and for solidification of a liquid alloy at the surface of a rotating disk as an example of forced convection. WHEN an alloy solidifies, the equilibrium composition of the originating solid phase differs in general from the composition of the liquid phase. Thus, segregation may take place, i.e., the composition of the solid phase formed at different times differs from the bulk composition. The degree of segregation depends on several factors such as the partition ratio of the alloying elements between the liquid and the solid phase, the rate of solidification, and convection. To clarify, a theoretical analysis has been worked out. The following presuppositions are made: 1—Calculations are confined to the solidification of binary alloys in which the concentration of component A (solvent) is much greater than that of component B (solute). 2—The equilibrium concentration of the alloying element B is assumed to be lower in the solid phase than in the coexisting liquid phase. 3—At the solid-liquid interface, partition equilibrium is assumed. 4—The dependence of the partition ratio of the solute between the liquid and the solid phase on concentration and temperature is disregarded since only small concentrations of the solute are considered. 5—The concentration of the alloying element B in the solid phase is supposed to be lower than the saturation concentration for the formation of a second solid phase. 6—diffusion in the solid phase is disregarded, since diffusion rates in the solid state are comparatively low. When the partition ratio of the solute between the liquid and the solid phase is greater than unity, a part of the solute is rejected at the solid-liquid inter- face and has to diffuse toward the bulk liquid. Thus there is necessarily a concentration difference in the liquid between the solid-liquid interface and the bulk liquid as has been pointed out by Hayes and Chipman,' Rutter and Chalmers,' Tiller, Jackson, Rutter, and Chalmers, and others (see Fig. 1). In view of the concentration gradient in the liquid phase, the ratio of the concentration of the solute in the solid phase to that in the bulk liquid differs from the equilibrium ratio, although at the solid-liquid interface, partition equilibrium is assumed. Under certain limiting conditions, the solid may even have virtually the composition of the bulk liquid as is shown below. Between 6 and 8 million cars are shredded annually in the U.S. This shredded material is magnetically separated leaving a mixture of nonmetallics and nonferrous metals which can be further separated into its metallic and nonmetallic constituents. The metallic portion is a mixture of metalr; and alloys containing predominately zinc, and some aluminum, copper, and residual iron. Hydrometallurgical strategies are proposed for recovering the aluminum, copper, and zinc. The thermodynamic and kinetic behavior of the most promising alternatives to separation are discussed.

Introduction Computer simulation is a technique that has been around for many years. Its applications include designing steel mills, planning space shots, or even developing ways to beat the casinos in Las Vegas. However, the use of computer simulation in surface coal mining is fairly recent. To promote its use, several government agencies, including the US Bureau of Mines, Forest Service, and Department of Energy, contracted with universities and private companies to develop computer simulation programs for surface coal mining. The Phosphate Recovery Corporation operates three flotation plants, NOS. 1 and 2 concentrators about three miles northeast of Mulberry, Florida, and No. 3 plant at Wales, Tennessee. These plants represent the first commercial phosphate flotation operation and are also believed to be the largest nonmetallic flotation operation in the world at the present time. The details of this paper will be confined to plant No. 2, this being the newest and largest concentrator in Florida, and the flow sheet being practically the same as at plant No. 1. The No. 3 plant has been operated but a short time and has been shut down since December, 1932, on account of the decrease in phosphate rock production. The phosphate washers usually are located centrally on a known deposit so that about two hundred acres of ground can be mined economically to each washer location. The washers are moved to new areas when the distance becomes too great for economical pumping. The flotation plants are built either adjacent to a washer, so that current debris may be utilized, or on the site of a former washer where there is sufficient accumulated debris available for mining, and the flotation plants must also be moved from time to time. Most of the water used in the Florida flotation plants is recovered after passing through a circulating system where most of the fine SUSpended matter is settled out, but some make-up water is obtained from deep wells near the plant. Power is obtained from the Tampa Electric Co. through the distribution facilities of the International Agricultural Corporation. Flotation concentrate is hauled from the plant by trolley over the International Agricultural Corporation's trolley system, to the drying plant at Prairie, one mile northwest of Mulberry. Byproducts are more important to the copper mining companies than to the copper market. Copper ores frequently contain gold, silver, molybdenum, lead, zinc, and cobalt. With the increase in the prices of these metals copper mining has become more profitable. If byproduct prices remain high, additional firms will be attracted to the copper industry; the increased supply of copper will reduce the long-run copper price. However, this is unlikely to happen because the markets for the copper byproducts, especially molybdenum and cobalt, are small. Increased recovery from copper and other sources will depress the prices of these byproducts before the copper price is significantly affected. Should byproduct prices remain high, the copper market will both settle at a lower long-run price and be more unstable in the short run. Since changes in the copper price do not affect the entire earnings of a multi-metal mine, the copper price must fall further before such mines reduce output in the short run. Higher byproduct revenues will make copper supply less responsive to copper prices; shifts in copper demand will result in greater copper price fluctuations in the short run than they did before.

THAT colleges and technical schools constitute a vital factor in our industrial system is being realized more and more of late years. Consequently it is desirable that there should be a constant interchange of ideas between the 'school and the industries and that there should be a more intimate contact between the student and his future employer. Business and industry demand certain proficiencies and qualifications of the student and he, in turn, sees certain rewards and advantages in the industry. . In a meeting of this kind, whose primary purpose is to promote a greater intimacy between the students and those men who are active in the mining profession, it is quite fitting that each state his demnds upon the other in order to establish a common understanding. It is probable that a student, not being conversant with actual conditions in the industry, may be unfair in what he asks of his employer. Therefore criticism, constructive or other- wise, is not only accepted, but is invited.

Problems related to strip and auger coal mining have grown with the development of the industry and the economy. New technology has produced equipment that has made mining by surface methods not only highly productive, but potentially highly destructive of water resources and natural environments. On the other hand, growth of the economy has produced an increased demand for clean water and created new demands for amenity values that natural environments provide. Thus, opposing forces have created conflicts in resource use. And these conflicts have made surface mining highly controversial. Resolving the controversy will require the solving of complex economic and social problems. The essence of the economic problem created by surface mining is that, in the absence of proper regulation, substantial costs resulting from the process are borne by the public rather than the mine operator. The major goal for the regulation of the surface mining industry is to provide controls which will promote the attainment of maximum social welfare. Deciding upon the type of controls required, and how to apply them to attain a social optimum, however, poses some very difficult problems. In a comprehensive article on this subject, David B. Brooks defined the problem and suggested that benefit- cost analysis might be helpful in providing guidelines for making decisions about surface mining regulations.1
