Sooner or later the potential miner of industrial minerals reaches the conclusion that of the various factors he must consider, the marketing of his product is. the most important. The sooner he realizes this the better, as successful industrial mineral producers .will confirm. Herein lies a difference between i.ndustria1 mineral mining and metal mining. Often in the latter, technical problems of mining or concentrating are equal to or even surpass those of marketing. This is not meant to imply that there are no problems in mining and beneficiation of industrial minerals, but these usually are outweighed by the problem of marketing. Recentlv. an official of a nationally known corporation :i the elecl.ro-metallurgical industry made an industrial mineral survey in the Pacific Northwest. In the course of his investigation he interviewed producers and potential producers of the various industrial minerals scheduled for use in the plant now being constructed in this area. He stated that he was interested in only three factors: namely, (1) Can your product meet our specifications? (2) Are you able to supply our tonnage requirements? and (3) What will be the delivered price? If there are several sources of supply of sufficient grade and tonnage, as is often the case in the Northwest, then the third factor becomes the important and deciding one. While industrial minerals are usually sold f.0.b. cars with the freight being paid by the buyer, it is the delivered and riot the f.0.b. price that determines the competitive position of the producer and his industrial mineral product. Unfortunately for both the consumers and producers of industrial minerals in the Northwest, the sources are generally a considerable distance from the markets. This necessitates long rail hauls, for which transportation charges make up the largest share of the delivered cost and the delivered price of the product. Is it any wonder then, that rail rates play such an important part in the marketing of industrial minerals? In order to sell his product, the producer must be able to deliver to the market at a competitive price. It must be remembered that his largest cost factor is rail transportation, and that he is limited to markets that he can reach competitively. Since the cost of rail transportation is so important, let us compare various freight rates in the Northwest and attempt to determine their influence on marketing. A study of all rates on all industrial minerals transported in this area, is beyond the scope of this paper. For the purposes of comparison, let us consider limestone (broken, crushed, or ground), and silica rock. These are widely used industrial minerals, and are carried by several different rail routes from.the sources of supply to the centers of consumption in the Pacific Northwest. Markets and Sources of Supply: Limestone has a number of uses in western Oregon and Washington. Among them are agricultural lime for the soils of the Willamette Valley and southwestern Washington; paper rock for the mills in such cities as West Linn, Oregon City, Newberg, St. Helens, and Salem, Oregon, and Camas and Everett, Wash.; chemical and metallurgical-grade limestone for the metallurgical plants centering around Portland, and the Tacoma-Seattle areas'; and sugar rock for the sugar refineries at Toppenish, Wash., and Nyssa, Oregon. ORDINARILY secondary copper, unless electrolytically refined, is reclaimed directly as foundry ingots used in the manufacture of copper-rich alloy castings. This use does not require the elimination of the impurities to the degree required if the recovered metal is to be used for electrical purposes where a high electrical conductivity is of prime importance. However, as a part of the general policy of reusing its own scrap and by-products wherever possible, the Western Electric Co. at its Hawthorne Works is recovering its secondary copper as wire bars which are delivered to its own rod and wire mill and there processed into wire of high electrical conductivity. This departure from the usual recovery scheme has been accomplished through the careful classification and sorting of the material entering the furnace charges and the careful control of the subsequent melting and refining in a reverberatory furnace. Tests conducted over a period of approximately four years have shown that the quality of wire bars produced from selected secondary copper is equal to that of wire bars produced by the electrolytic refineries. The interest which has been exhibited in the process by those who have seen it has prompted the following general description. It is the authors' opinion that the recovery of secondary copper will become more and more an important factor in the copper production industry. The description is largely of the refining furnace and its operation, but it must be remembered that careful classification and sorting of the scrap materials to eliminate impurities are just as important as the furnace operation toward obtaining a satisfactory final product. Classification and sorting do not lend themselves easily to description; they must just be done. It should also be recognized at the outset that constant intelligent supervision is requisite to the success of the process because there are so many ways in which impurities can find their way into the final product.

TURBO blowers for blast-furnace blowing have now been in use for some years, and a review of the experience gained and the present state of progress may be interesting. The first blast-furnace blowing engine of this type to be installed in America was built by the General Electric Co. and is installed at the oxford Furnace of the Empire Iron & Steel Co. This machine was put into operation March 8, 191.0. A duplicate unit is situated at the furnace of the Northern Iron Co. at Port Henry, N. Y., which unit was put into opera ion June 30, 1910 (Fig. 1).

In the solvent extraction process, also referred to as liquid-liquid extraction, the clarified uranium-pregnant sulfuric acid leach solution is contacted with an organic extractant dispersed in kerosene; the uranium enters the organic phase and associates itself with the organic extractants. Simultaneously an-ions or cations, as the case may be, leave the organic extractant phase and enter the aqueous phase. The two phases are then allowed to separate by virtue of their immiscibility. Based on the data available, a generalized procedure for the recovery of molybdenum from the sodium carbonate scrub liquor of acid leach uranium mills using secondary and tertiary amine extractants is presented, as is another generalized procedure for the recovery of molybdenum from the bleed stream of alkaline leach uranium mill circuits. Such economic appraisal as can be made at this stage of the development is also indicated. Molybdenum occurs in most uranium ores. Whether the uranium is solubilized by the acid leach route or by the alkaline leach process, some of the molybdenum present in the ore is solubilized along with the uranium. Molybdenum in uranium mill pregant solutions may cause processing difficulties, among which may be mentioned the poisoning of resins, the precipitation of organo-molybdenum complexes, or the build-up of molybdenum in recycle streams. While the uranium milling industry has been successful in applying measures to overcome the problems arising from the presence of molybdenum in the circuits, such measures nevertheless add to the cost of producing uranium yellow cake concentrate. Table I shows the analysis of typical uranium pregnant leach solutions. Uranium recovery by solvent extraction is presently practiced only in conjunction with acid leach circuits, and it may be noted that of about 16,000 tons of uranium ore daily processed by sulfuric acid leach, more than half of this tonnage follows the solvent extraction route. Uranium mills leaching ore with sodium carbonate-sodium bicarbonate solution (the so-called alkaline leach circuit) do not use solvent extraction. In this case the uranium pregnant solution is sufficiently pure to permit the direct precipitation of uranium concentrate with subsequent recycle of the alkaline leach solution. While solvent extraction procedures may be developed which are economically attractive for the alkaline leach uranium process, this has so far not been the case. The earlier uranium mill solvent extraction circuits used organo-phosphate extraction reagents, among which di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid was popular. It should be borne in mind that uranium in its sulfuric acid leach solution exists in an equilibrium involving uranium in both anion and cation forms: uo + 2S0 = [uo2(so4)2] For this reason uranium may be extracted by either cation extractors or anion extractors and this is likewise true of molybdenum. However, the organo-phosphate extractants also load ferric iron which is usually present in the uranium acid leach solution. For this reason, it is necessary to reduce this solution substantially to the ferrous state ahead of solvent extraction using organo-phosphate reagents. The amines, being anion extractors, selectively reject iron and thus render the iron reduction step unnecessary. INTRODUCTION. IN considering the magnificent success of Mr. Gayley's Bold experiment of applying dry blast to the blast-furnace, whereby , saving of 20 per cent. of fuel per ton of iron is effected, the question arises whether, still further economy in fuel is possible, and, if so, how it is to be attained? The manner in which the heat generated in the furnace is utilized in the production of pig-iron may be determined, by the method of Bell and Gruner, for any furnace for which the necessary data are obtainable ; and the study of the operation,. tinder various conditions, of a number of furnaces, for which such information has been worked out., should enable us to form some conclusion on the subject. The tables and calculations given below cover the operations of several furnaces reported in our Transactions; also the two furnaces using natural and dry blast in ,Mr. Gayley's experiment, for which the heat-equation has been worked out by Prof. Joseph W. Richards in his admirable discussion' of Mr. Gayley's paper, The Application of Dry Air Blast to the Manufacture of Iron, and, finally, various hypothetical furnaces.. The full list is as follows : A. Isabella furnace, with natural blast. B. Isabella furnace, with dry blast. The data stated. for A and B in Table III. are those given by Professor Richards; except that the heat-units are given for one unit of iron instead of 100 units, and some items of heat supplied, as stated by Richards, have been subdivided, the total being the same as given by Richards. In Part I of this work,1 equations of elasticity were formulated for transversely isotropic, axisymmetric, homogeneous, porous media exhibiting pore fluid pressure. Equations of elasticity and the thermal analogy method were used to determine transient horizontal, tangential, and vertical stresses and radial displacement in a semi-infinite cylindrical region when either a constant rate of pressure or a constant rate of flow is maintained at the wellbore. In this paper, the approach presented earlier is extended to finite reservoirs for the cases of (1) steady-state flow, (2) constant pressures at the well bore and outer boundary and (3) constant pressure at the wellbore and no flow at the outer boundary. Results of this work show that radial and tangential stress gradients are high near the wellbore but diminish rapidt; away from the well; the vertical stress gradient behaves in the same way but is less severe. Radial stresses are compressive or neutral, whereas tangential and vertical stresses may be tensile, neutral or com-pressive, depending upon the boundary conditions, the physical Properties of the system and the radial distance involved (vertical stresses are always compressive in an unbounded system1. For constant boundary pressures, both radial and tangential stresses increase with time whereas they both decrease for a closed outer boundary and constant pressure at the wellbore. The vertical stress decreases with time for both systems. For steady-state systems, radial displacement may be positive or negative, depending upon the dimensions of the system, the pressure differential and the porosity. Radial displacement may be positive or negative for a closed outer boundary but is positive for constant pressures at both boundaries. INTRODUCTION The importance, utility and complexity of a realistic appraisal of the stress state at and local to a wellbore were indicated in Part I. In this paper the analytical approach presented earlier is extended to finite, cylindrical reservoir geometry for the cases of (1) steady-state flow, (2) constant pressures at wellbore and outer boundary and (3) constant pressure at the wellbore and no flow at the outer boundary. Other than the outer boundary of the reservoir being finite, the physical system and assumptions pertinent thereto are the same as before. The reader may wish to review the mathematical development through Eq. 49 of Part I before proceeding here. In the commercial annealing of cartridge brass there are four points regarding which definite data are essential. They have to do with the correct interpretation of grain count in its relation to annealing temperature and, incidentally, to Brinell hardness. These points are: 1. The comparison of the grain sizes of two cartridge-brass mixtures: 69 copper, 31 zinc, 0.376-in. (9.5-mm.) gage; and 68 copper, 32 zinc, 0.130-in. (3.3-mm.) gage 2. The comparison of the grain sizes of annealed metal that had previously been reduced by rolling varying amounts; for instance, 20.0, 36.6, 50.9, and 59.1 per cent. 3. The determination of standards for grain sizes on annealed brass of the composition 68 per cent. copper, 32 per cent. zinc and 69 copper, 31 zinc. 4. The comparison of grain size with Brinell hardness on identical samples of annealed metal. In their comprehensive and thorough investigation of the recrystal-lization of cold-worked alpha brass on annealing,l Mathewson and Phillips have discussed the relations between temperature of anneal, degree of deformation, and structural alteration in alpha brass. They have also shown certain comparisons between the ordinary physical properties and the grain size of annealed brass. The purpose of the present investigation is mainly concerned with the grain size of cartridge brass, its relation to Brinell hardness, and the publication of sufficient data to enable those engaged in the inspection of such material to have a correct foundation upon which to work. The first alloy was taken from regular mill stock that had been rolled from 0.580 in. to 0.376 in. (14.7 mm. to 9.5 mm.) gage, a reduction of 35.1 per cent. This bar (No. 1) had the following composition: Copper, 69.20 per cent.; zinc, 30.76 per cent.; lead, 0.02 per cent.; iron, 0.02 per cent. The second alloy was also taken from mill stock of 0.325 in. (8.25 mm.) gage and was rolled as shown in Table 1, in order to get four bars reduced two, four, six, and eight B. & 5. numbers respectively. This second alloy

THIS paper is a discussion of the extremely valuable one of Mathewson and Phillips, The Recrystallization of Cold-Worked Alpha Brass on Annealing,1 which not only gives us a wealth of important data reached with great intelligence, but also shows both uncommon powers of imagination and a perfectly fair spirit. Let me try to analyze some of their results, and to enunciate some of the laws to which these results point. For brevity I refer to them as "The Authors." The page numbers in parentheses refer to their paper. 1. The Visible Aspects of Recrystallization.-Plastic deformation in a single direction, as in cold-rolling, draws the grains out in that direction, that is, inequiaxes them, without destroying their apparent individuality. Each grain seems to endure the drawing out without changing either its volume or its orientation materially, for the etching tint of each grain seems to be as uniform after as before the drawing out, save for the "etch bands,"2 shown in Figs. A to D of the Authors' Plate I. As the drawn-out metal is heated progressively, on reaching a certain "disintegration temperature" these old grains seem to break up, probably into submicroscopic fragments, and this apparent disintegration is followed by a coalescence of these fragments, so that their number decreases and their size increases, till they may become very much coarser than before the drawing out. Ruder3 coarsened the grains of silicon steel in this way till single grains reached an area of 50 cm. (7.75 sq. in.). The deformation itself probably breaks each grain up into many very small fragments, but the fact that each grain continues to have a uniform etching tint different from that of its neighbors indicates that these fragments retain the initial common orientation of the grain. The apparent disintegration which we observe, then, is rather an abandonment of community of orientation for individuality of orientation, by the fragments formed earlier during the deformation. The authors are to be congratulated for presenting the first comprehensive paper on the theory and practice of threshold pressure determination in connection with underground gas storage. It is of particular value since most previous experimental work on this subject has been proprietary to the commercial laboratories engaged in such testing and to their clients. This dlscussion is presented in amplification of the subject paper, not in criticism, and is based upon our experience with approximately 5,000 threshold pressure determinations. Our comments are directed primarily to the experimental procedures as described by Thomas et al. It should be noted that, while clay mineral-rich lithologies are the most common caprock materials, the samples used (Table 1) include low permeability sandstones and carbonates, but do not include shales or other formations in which clav minerals exert a dominant effect. While our experience on samples analogous to those investigated by the authors generally confirms their findings, we have found that even more rigorous experimental conditions must be imposed where clay minerals are the controlling factor. These additional conditions result from the well-known molecular character of the clay minerals themselves in which water is interlaminated with, and bonded to, silicate sheets, thus becoming an essential component of the molecule. In many clay minerals the character of the intersheet bonding, and thus the dimension of the lattice, is strongly affected by variations in the identity and concentration of cations present in the intersilicate water. On a supermolecular scale, adsorbed water films on particle or "flakes" of shale provide much of the cohesive force necessary to maintain mechanical strength. The thickness of these films is variable and inversely proportional to intergranular pressure within the dimensional limits involved in caprock investigation. The thickness of the intersilicate water layers may also be subject to pressure under some conditions. These considerations are reflected in several necessary modifications of the experimental procedures described by the authors. Two of these are, in our judgment and experience, of such importance that they cast real doubt on the validity of data obtained on argillaceous materials without their application. The very careful resaturation procedures proposed by the authors should give good results in connection with the relatively "inert" lithologies used in their experiments. Our experience suggests, however, that they would create more problems than they would eliminate if applied to argillaceous materials. 1. Drying of the sample at the temperature and for the duration indicated by the authors not only will dessicate the sample with consequent shrinkage cracking, parting along bedding planes, and even total disassociation in the case of fissile shales, but it may also alter the character of the clay minerals themselves — in some cases irreversibly. 2. Prolonged evacuation to 2 microns Hg further dessicates the sample and is even more effective in reducing the intersilicate water content. 3. Resaturation with water differing in pH or chemical content from that existing originally in the sample also serves to alter the nature of the sample, particularly its structure and strength. 4. Our experience has been that, even with the thorough precautions proposed by the authors, complete resaturation of very fine grained materials is rarely obtained. Yet our experience confirms the

The corrosion resistance of stainless steels can be strongly affected by surface treatments. Changes in corrosion resistance can relate to surface composition, integrity and stability of the passive film, and to surface profile (roughness). Operations producing oxidation at the surface, such as annealing, heat treating, and welding, can result in a chromium-rich scale and a chromium-depleted metal surface. In order to restore full corrosion resistance, chemical or mechanical clean-up techniques must remove not only the oxide, but also a very thin layer of metal. Laboratory and field test studies show that these factors are particularly significant in less highly alloyed steels. Annealing stainless in a reducing atmosphere (bright annealing) avoids chromium depletion, but as-bright-annealed material does not display optimum corrosion resistance in certain environments. Electro passiva-tion can be applied to improve pitting resistance without significantly changing bright surface appearance. Potentiometric studies show that electropassivated material also displays significantly greater resistance to breakdown of passivity in acid solutions. The application of special surface finishes for appearance purposes can affect corrosion resistance. Roughness is a key factor. Samples of related appearance but with different surface profiles can show significant differences in corrosion resistance. Thus nonreflec-tive stainless with a relatively smooth surface produced by a special rolling process is much superior to material chemically etched to a similar low reflectivity. THE corrosion resistance of a stainless steel is affected by other factors in addition to its bulk composition and metallurgical structure. These other factors include those relating to the specific chemical and physical condition of the steel's surface. This paper will consider certain aspects of surface condition in relation to corrosion resistance. In particular, studies will be described on the effects of oxidation encountered in heat treating or welding operations, of passivation after bright annealing, and of different surface finishes. EFFECTS DUE TO OXIDATION When stainless steels are exposed to high temperature in an oxidizing environment, as in annealing or welding, the oxides formed are relatively rich in chromium. As a consequence of oxidation, the metallic layer directly beneath the scale may be low in chromium to some very thin but finite depth.1"8 Such a change in chromium content could lower the corrosion resistance at the surface, whether or not the oxide layer is removed. Studies were performed relating to the effect of oxidation and chromium depletion produced during annealing and welding on the corrosion resistance of stainless steels. The nominal compositions of steels used in this study and others are given in Table I. A) Annealing Studies on 17 pet Cr Steels. 1) Effects of Pickling Treatments. Studies were performed to investigate the corrosion resistance of air annealed type 430 stainless as a function of the amount of electrolytic pickling after annealing. The material used in this study had been air annealed and electrolytically pickled in the mill. All scale had been removed, and yet the material showed unusually poor corrosion resistance. Laboratory electrolytic pickling studies were performed to determine whether additional metal removal from the surface would improve corrosion resistance. Electrolytic pickling was performed in a sulfuric acid bath using various conditions of bath acidity, temperature, time, and current density. The samples were then rated for corrosion resistance in a ferric chloride spot test. For this spot test, a solution was prepared by dissolving 10 g of FeCl3 . 6H2O, 5 g of NaCl, and 2.5 ml of concentrated HC1 in 200 ml of water. An area on a specimen was cleaned and a drop of test solution was placed on the prepared area. After 5 min, the drop was rinsed off and the area wiped dry. The spot was then rated between 1 and 5 by visual comparison with standard spots. The numerical rating of the standard spots can be described as follows: 1—No clouding of surface; 2—very slight clouding of surface; 3—slight clouding of surface; 4—moderate clouding of surface; 5—strong clouding of surface. A rating of 1 or 2 was considered to have passed the test, a rating of 4 or 5 represented failure, and a rating of 3 was considered borderline. The severity of etching in this test has been related to the actual chromium content at the surface.4 Etching (clouding) occurs on type 430 stainless (rating of 4 to 5) when the surface chromium content is 14 pct or less. The effects of current density and retention time when electrolytically repickling this material in 6 pct sulfuric acid are shown in Fig. 1. Increasing the cur-rent density or retention time improved corrosion resistance as measured by the spot test. Similarly, increasing acid concentration of the bath or bath tem-perature was found to improve corrosion resistance. The conditions making for improved spot ratings resulted in increased metal removal, regardless of specific pickling conditions used, Fig. 2.

CHUQUICAMATA open-pit mine is capable of producing a total of 105,000 tons daily. When the sulphide plant is operating to capacity the distribution of this quantity will be approximately 30,000 tons sulphide ore, 30,000 tons oxide ore and 45,000 tons of waste. At that time the combined capacity of the oxide and sulphide plants will be about 540 million lb of copper per year. Twenty one benches have been opened to date and all are still active except the three top ones at the northeastern limit of the pit. These have been pushed back to final slope line. The pit is 8850 ft long, 3540 ft wide and 980 ft deep. Benches are not all developed to a standard height as the large development shovels used in cutting new benches have been of different size and range. At this time new benches 521 ft high are being developed with an' 11-yd shovel. Ore haulage through the greater part of the pit operation has been on down grades to the crushing plant. With the opening of bench F-4 in April 1944 the first adverse-grade ore haul was encountered. Of the total tonnage now being mined, 35 pct comes from the four benches that are below the level of the crushing plant yard. Waste had been dumped on the same or nearly the same level as the bench from which it was removed up to the opening of bench F-4. Waste from this and lower levels is hauled to the level of the crusher, yard where it must cross the flow of ore traffic to reach the only available dumping space to the east of the mine. The average ore haul is 3.13 miles one way shovel to crusher, and the average waste haul from that portion handled by railroad is 3.32 miles one way from shovel to waste dump. Waste that is being removed by truck haulage from the upper part of the -mine is hauled an average of 1 mile. Ore loaded by trucks is hauled 3/4 mile to a car loading ramp and then by rail to the crushing plant. Drilling and Blasting There are two types of development for blasting being used: One for opening new benches and the other for bank shooting. The former consists of 9a in. diam churn-drill holes drilled 11.8 ft center to center in rows 10.2 ft apart with the holes staggered in the rows thus giving an equilateral-triangle pattern of 11.8 ft on a side. After the first block, 492 ft long by 71.5 ft wide, is shot in the pattern described above, the cut is advanced by smaller shots consisting of four rows of holes spaced 23 ft center to center with the rows 23 ft apart. These shots are fired in conjunction with side shots in which the holes are drilled 33 ft center to center and 29.5 ft back from the toe, thus squaring up the bank for subsequent shooting. The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerksdorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7988 acres or 12.5 sq miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26-ft diam down-cast shaft and a 22 ft-diam up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month. To exploit the Eastern zone of the property and assist in increasing production to 200,000 tons milled per month, it was decided to sink a further Twin Shaft System consisting of a 28-ft diam downcast shaft and a ventilation up-cast shaft -22-ft in diam, both monolithic concrete lined — 200 ft apart and 5300 ft deep. This paper deals with the sinking and commissioning of these Eastern Twin Shafts. This was achieved by one sinking crew within a period of 20 months. A) PLANNING 1) Siting: The Eastern Shaft System was sited in the north-east area of the property, 12,000 ft east on strike from the Pioneer System. (Fig. 1). Initially the system was sunk to the 5300 ft elevation to conform with the original Pioneer Shaft System. On completion a sub-vertical main shaft will be sunk to the 8000 ft elevation in the immediate vicinity, and subsequently the surface ventilation shaft will be deepened to this elevation by raising from level to level and sliping to full size. The exact positions of the shafts were chosen after: a) underground development had located certain known water bearing zones, and b) geophysical and topographical surveys had been carried out. The shafts passed through the following geological succession: Surface to 4430 ft - Dolomites of the Transvaal System 4430 to 4470 ft - Quartzites and conglomerates of the Black Reef Series of the Transvaal System. 4470 to 4470 ft - Diabasic Lava of the Venters-dorp System (Ventersdorp Contact Reef at base). 4470 to 5250 ft - Quartzites of the Elsburg Series of the Upper Witwaters-rand System. The shafts were sited to ensure that the least possible water would be encountered during sinking, and this contributed to the rapid rate of sinking. 2) Duties: a) The 22-ft diam ventilation shaft was designed to up-cast 1,400,000 cfm of air (0.060 density) against a resistance of 22 in. water gauge. b) The main shaft was designed to handle 160,000 tons hoisted per month as well as the men, material and down-cast ventilation to serve this tonnage. The 284 diam main shaft is equipped with streamlined buntons spaced at 15 ft centers set in pockets which were left during sinking. There are six compartments, four of which are sewed by two dual purpose hoists, hoisting either, twedeck man cages or 13-ton bottom discharge skips. The other two compartments are served by a single purpose winder hoisting double deck cages accommodating 60 men per deck. (Fig. 2). 3) Timing: Permanent equipment was ordered well in advance to insure continuity in the operation. Development underground reached the shaft positions before the start of sinking operations. From this development, boreholes were drilled into shaft positions to drain off water in the vicinity of the shafts. To ensure complete co-ordination of effort, all relevant data, as well as the allocation of responsibility, were made known to all persons and departments concerned. 4) Models: The extensive use of scale models during the preliminary planning stages proved most useful in deciding on design such as buntons, bunton pockets and guide cleats, and complex layouts concerning loading, spillage and pumping arrangements. Metallic copper of purity equal to commercial electrolytic copper is deposited during the anodic dissolution of technically available white metal, Cu2S, in m acidic solution of' copper(II) sulfate as electrolyte and copper sheets as cathodes. The process may be applied on commercial scale since it has the advantage of by passing the converting and poling steps, decreasing pollution problems due to SO, and recovering the sulfur of the white metal in the elemental form. The anodic dissolution is believed to take place in three steps: The working conditions that lead to 98 pct cathodic current efficiency are: 30 gpl Cu2+ and 100 gpl H2SO4 in electrolyte, current density 1.0 amp per sq dm, and tetnperature of bath 40°C'. DURING the smelting of copper, nickel, lead, and zinc sulfide ores, large amounts of sulfur dioxide are produced. Because the release of this gas in the atmosphere causes pollution problems, many attempts were made in the past for its recovery either in liquified form or processed to sulfuric acid. Although these two forms of sulfur are the usual forms that are consumed by the chemical and metallurgical industries, their storage and transport usually raise economic problems. It was realized, long ago, that a process by which sulfur can be recovered directly in the elemental form would be most attractive. Elemental sulfur is easily stored and transported, and is readily converted to SO2, H2S, or H2SO4 when needed. Processes aimed to recover the metals from their sulfide ores, and at the same time by-product sulfur in the elemental form, were recently reviewed.' As early as 1882, Marchese2 patented a process in which a matte having the composition: Cu 15, Pb 14, Fe 41, and S 25 pct was electrolyzed. According to cohen3 the process was applied on a pilot scale by the Aktiengesellschaft fur Bergbau-, Blei-, und Zinkhiitten-betriebe at Stolberg, Rheinland, Germany. The process was unsuccessful, however, owing to the contamination of the electrolyte during electrolysis. Studies in this field were reported by Bernfeld4 and Egli.5 Borchers et a1.6-8 developed the process further by using white metal (Cu 78.2 pct, S 19.6 pct) instead of the matte, and a pilot plant was operated by the Mansfeldschen Kupferschiefer Co. at Eisleben, German~.~ It appears, however, that the process never went into commercial operation. Further studies in this direction were carried out by Russian workers.10-23 The International Nickel Co. of Canada erected a pilot plant at Port Colborne in 1951 to apply the process to nickel matte which is essentially pure nickel sulfide."'- 26 Full-scale plant went into operation at the Thompson Refinery in Manitoba in 1964.27 In this method nickel sulfide matte is melted and cast into anodes analyzing 76 pct Ni and 20 pct S with small amounts of copper, cobalt, and iron. These anodes are then electrolyzed in an aqueous solution of NiS04 at pH 4. Further work on this method was reported in the literature.28-31 In this paper, experiments on the anodic dissolution of white metal in aqueous copper sulfate solution are reported. EXPERIMENTAL White metal, Table I, obtained from The Anaconda Co., was cast in form of anodes 10 by 7.5 by 1 cm, Fig. 1. The anodes are mechanically strong and do not break easily; when polished they gave a shiny gray metallic appearance. From the chemical composition shown in Table I, it can be seen that the atomic ratio Cu:S corresponds approximately to the formula CU2.06S. The copper in excess to the formula Cu2S is most probably present as a separate phase since metallic copper could be seen under the microscope, Fig. 2. Fig. 3 shows the X-ray diffraction pattern of white metal which matches fairly well with that of reagent-grade Cu2S.

A method is derived for obtaining the distribution of sphere diameters and plate thicknesses (or pearlite spacings) from size distribution functions obtained along randomly oriented lines. The method described offers several advantages over existing methods. IT is often of interest to measure not only the average particle size but also the distribution in sizes of particles dispersed in an opaque material, such as an alloy. Particles of a single size will exhibit a range of apparent sizes on the plane of polish. If the sample contains a distribution of particle sizes, the distribution of observed sizes on the plane of polish is related to the distribution of actual particle sizes by an integral equation, For example, a distribution of sphere sizes, N(r),

The direction of the optic or "C" axis of a uniaxial metal crystal can be found with the metallurgical polarizing microscope by examining two planes of section on the crystal. Complete orientation of the crystal can be determined if a twin crystal is common to both surfaces of section. Examination of Uniaxial Metals in Polarized Light-Rotation of a uniaxial crystal surface, properly prepared,' shows four extinction positions 90 deg apart, provided that the surface is not close to a basal section. One of these two extinction directions corresponds with the projection of the optic axis on the surface of section. This direction can be found if the 'sign of the rotationr2 for the metal is known. To find the direction of the optic axis, the crystal is rotated on the stage 45 deg from an extinction position. With a crystal of negative sign, to produce extinction the analyser must be rotated towards the optic axial direction and vice versa. All sections, other than basal, of a uniaxial crystal have the same sign of rotation and, since there is no change in sign with wave length, white light can be used for these measurements. U the sign of the rotation is not known the presumed direction of the optic axis can be determined assuming a positive sign. A third section cut normal to the presumed optic axis will show basal extinction if the assumption is correct. It is convenient to use the edge between the two planes of section as a fiducial direction common to both surfaces. The optic axis can be related to this direction. If the above measurements are repeated on the other plane of section and the angle between the two section planes measured, stereographic projection can be used to determine the orientation of the crystal optic axis. Determination of Complete Orientation—The complete orientation of a uniaxial crystal can be determined provided that a twin crystal is common to both surfaces of section, and the twin law is known. The orientation of the twin crystal optic axis can be determined in the same way as for the main crystal

These iron mines of Spain are located on the mountain ridge forming the boundary between the Teruel and Guadalajara provinces, called Sierra Menera. They form a property of 25 mines extending over an area of 1,677 hectares (4,140 acres) situated at a height varying from 1,200 m. (3,940 ft.) to 1,500 m. (4,920 ft.) above sea level. The deposit follows the direction north to south; huge masses of ore are being found both on the slopes and at the summit of the Sierra. The ore occurs among quartzites and magnesite limestone, in some places overlaid by quartzite 15 m. (50 ft.) thick; in some others (and this is more general) the ore is overlaid by earth and boulders of quartzite origin; this layer is about 8 m. (26 ft.) thick. The ore beds occupy the geological horizon of the Superior Trias or Muschelkask, which are here in direct contact with the Silurian quartzites. The lime-stones have been more or less transformed. There is ample evidence to show that these mines were worked in very ancient times—objects and tools employed in mining by the ancient Romans and Arabs are to be found plentifully in old workinigs which extend down into the deposits. It has been estimated that more than 10,000,000 tons of ore were mined in the old days in this district and carried to the primitive forges in the vicinity where iron of much renown in Spain was extracted. Remains of more than 20 of these forges are found in the neighborhood of Sierra Menera and are usually situated near waterfalls and forests. Much investigation has been carried on for the purpose of determining the quantity of ore to be found in these mines, but no exact calculations can be made at present. When the investigation is completed it will surely be found that the deposit contains a much larger quantity than the 100,000,000 tons indicated by the present workings. The mines are now worked as open quarries and this method can and will be followed for a long time, probably until the deposit is worked out. Figs. 1 and 2 give some idea of the quarries in operation and the reserves, the iron-ore stocks, screening installation and general arrangement. THE mines operated by the South American Development Co. are located in the Zaruma mining district of southwestern Ecuador. They are near the old mining town of Zaruma, which is the only important city in the canton of the same name. The district is situated in the upper end of a valley lying between two spurs of the Cordillera, one of which may be considered the Coast Range and the other an intermediate range. The mining camp proper, known as Portovelo, and the plant are 2.4 km. south of Zaruma, on the north bank of the Amarillo River, a tributary of the Tumbes River, which flows southwestward through Peru to the Pacific. Portovelo is difficult of access; it is reached from Guayaquil by means of river steamers and muleback. Embarking at Guayaquil, the route is down the Guayas River, across the Jambeli Canal, and up the Santa Rosa River to Santa Rosa, a distance of 177 km. From Santa Rosa, the road or trail follows the Santa Rosa River, then across the summit of the Coast Range into Portovelo, a distance of 74 km.-a two-day trip on muleback. The mining property of the South American Development Co. comprises 297 lode claims and 142 placer claims. The combined lode claims cover an area, roughly rectangular in shape, 9000 m. long from north to south by 4000 m. wide; the northern edge of the rectangle is about 3000 m. north of the central plaza of Zaruma. Mineral lands in Ecuador are held by virtue of an annual tax per claim paid to the central government, no surface rights being included.

Several years ago, we used an electric analogue computer to study the effect of vertical fractures on the productivity of wells in expanding fluid-drive reservoirs. The results of this work were used both as a guide to research and as a basis for the design of actual fracturing operations. In 1958, Dyes, Kemp and Caudle' published portions of the data from this study. The results were released in 1959 to service companies for use in fracturing guides. The purpose of this note is to discuss the experimental conditions and assumptions which were made to derive the information which is already partially a matter of public record. ASSUMPTIONS This study applies to fractures which extend in a vertical plane symmetrically from the well. For simplicity, we chose to study the case of a well in a square drainage area with its fractures extending toward two of its nearest neighbors. We have assumed no migration of fluid across the boundary of this area. The quadrant shown in Fig. 1 models this system. We made the usual assumptions that the reservoir is homogeneous and isotropic, that the fluid is homogeneous and that production is effected by fluid-expansion drive. We also assumed that the fracture extends from top to bottom of the reservoir. Of more practical interest is our assumption that the fracture does not change the size of the drainage area. This premise is appropriate if all the wells in the reservoir are fractured in the same way. But where a single well is fractured, its drainage area may be enlarged at the expense of its neighbors. This could be of economic importance. The assumption that the fracture will not extend beyond the established drainage area of the well also limits the application of the results. Such long frac- tures will yield benefits in excess of those predicted here. When we assume homogeneity, we disregard the frequently observed zone of damage in the vicinity of the well. Where damage is severe, the benefits resulting from by-passing it will far exceed those predicted by this study. All comparisons were made of systems producing in the semi-steady state. By this we mean that equal volumes contributed equally to flow (pressure was dropping at a uniform rate throughout the system) when the rate of flow was observed.
