The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on a11 week-days, except holidays, from Sept. 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by for- warding copies of mining reports, maps privately issued, and similar material, which will be classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

In a marked departure from conventional practice, the Power Plate process combines the two unit operations of leaching and electrowinning into a single continuous step for direct recovery of copper from sulfide concentrates, cement copper, copper scrap, and copper oxide slurries. Considering how environmental controls are pre- venting development of smelters for additional capacity or new construction, the Power Plate process provides a welcome pollution-free alternative to the smelting-electrorefining routes. And its low capital investment and low operating costs also recommend it to copper producers who are now using or investigating various hydrometallurgical methods.

The Joint Economic Committee's subcommittee on international payments and exchange has recommended that, following international monetary reforms, the law which prohibits private possession of gold by American citizens be repealed. The subcommittee recommendation called for reforms to enhance the role of special drawing rights in international monetary affairs and downgrade the role of gold. Special drawing rights, also known as "paper gold", are on artificial reserve with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which distributes them to member nations in proportion to their economic importance in the world economy. The special drawing rights are then used to settle debts between nations in the same manner as gold or currency. The subcommittee said that under the reforms now being discussed special drawing rights would be acceptable in lieu of gold among the member countries of the IMF.

Equipment has been developed to utilize natural 8 Hz electromagnetic fields to measure rock resistivities. Telluric and magnetotelluric surveys have detected resistivity variations associated with geological contacts and metallic sulfide deposits. The fundamenfa1 premises of these methods are illustrated by the results of surveys across a Pleistocene-Precambrian contact in the Ottawa Valley and a near-surface sulfide deposit in Northern Quebec. Such interfaces are characterized not only by variations in apparent resistivity, but also, unexpectedly by the spatial anisotropy of the electric fields and the presence of a strong vertical magnetic field component in their vicinity. Standard geophysical electrical and electromagnetic methods (Heiland, 1940) for the determination of the electrical properties of the ground and the search of good electrical conductors necessitate the use of a transmitter and receiver which are coupled galvanically or inductively through the ground. The electrical properties of the ground are deduced from either the transfer function, or the impulse response, of the transmitter — ground — receiver system. Where deep penetration is desired these methods require powerful transmitters whose weight and size increase the cost and reduce the speed of operation. It is possible however, to resort to another class of electrical prospecting methods which employ ambient, natural electromagnetic fields in place of a transmitter.'-' In the audio and subaudio frequency ranges, these fields are generated by thunderstorm activity. At some distance from the seat of the disturbance, the e.m. fields propagate as plane waves with a horizontal magnetic field component. The incident wave, of course, induces currents in the ground. Where the ground is homogeneous the relation between the horizontal magnetic and horizontal electric fields vectors is particularly simple:' /E/ = \[SpT/H/ (1) where: /E/ = magnitude of horizontal electric field in millivolts/kilometer (RMS) /H/ = magnitude of the orthogonal inducing magnetic field in milligammas (RMS) p = rock resistivity in ohm-meters i = frequency of measurement in c/s In practice, the ground is seldom an homogeneous half space, lateral conductivity variations exist, (in the case of base metal prospecting these are the features actually sought) and the two field vectors are no longer simply related. The ratio of E to H is still useful, however, for the determination of an "apparent" ground resistivity. From a theoretical view point, the general problem of a two dimensional fault or dyke anomaly can be separated into two distinct cases. In the first case, where the e.m. energy propagates in a direction normal to the strike, the horizontal magnetic field remains constant and is oriented along the strike of the formation.3 As shown by d'Erceville and Kunetz," all the information about the anomaly is contained in measurements of the electric field component. In fact, away from the interface, the electric fields are proportional to the square roots of the resistivities:

The fact that granite has been encountered by the drill by those in search of oil and gas in Kansas is becoming more and more a matter of interest, not only to the oil producer but to everyone directly and indirectly connected with the oil business. It is, therefore, time that someone should offer an explanation for its presence and form a definite opinion, based on all the data available, in regard to the effect it will have on the future prospects of the area affected as probable oil-and gas-producing territory. At present there seems to be no consensus of opinion. To the writer's knowledge, only one attempt has been made to explain ; by Erasmus Haworth, State Geologist of Kansas, in a paper entitled Bulletin Number Two on Crystalline Rocks in Kansas. The purpose of the present paper is to offer a theory for the presence of the granite, and to draw conclusions which will aid in determining the prospective oil and gas value of the area in question. In taking up this question it will be well to consider first the tests in which granite has been reported, with a general history of each. The accompanying map (Fig. 1) shows the location of all wells described. The first well in which granite was reported was that drilled just south of Zeandale in section 27, township 10 south, range 9 east, by a local company which had taken up a block of leases in that vicinity. At a depth of 958 ft. (291.99 m.) granite was encountered. Drilling was continued to a depth of 1093 ft. (333 m.) in the same formation, at which depth the hole was abandoned. Another well was started 1 mile east of the first well and the same rock was found at a depth of 945 ft. (288 m.). Drilling was continued to a depth of 1200 ft. (365.76 m.) with the bit in the same formation. Samples of the drill cuttings have been examined and they are undoubtedly crushed granite. The next well in which granite was found was that drilled by DeLaat and Shepard, independent wildcat operators, in section 34, township 19 south, range 7 east, near the town of Elmdale. Granite was struck at 1707 ft. (520 m.) and the hole was abandoned in the same formation at 2525 ft. (769 m.). With identical annealing heal treatment the development of major annealed texture component seems to depend primarily upon the degree of cold reduction. Cube texture was evident on annealing- 1/2-, 1,/4- , and 1/8-mil tapes at 760°C, but it dissap-)eared on 927°C annealing of 1/8-mil tape cold reduced 96.9 pct. Some cube texturee remained as tile strongest 927 °C annealed texture component in 1/4- and 1/2-mil tapes cold reduced 93.8 and 87.5 pet, respectively. The switching coefficient increases and the squareness ratio of the hysteresis loop decreases proportionally with increasing cube pole concentration. PREVIOUS studies 1,2 on the 1/8-mil ultra-thin molybdenum permalloy tape established cold rolled and annealed textures and their magnetic performance for switch-core and coincident-current memory applications, The major cold-rolled texture was found to be of {110}<335> which is quite similar to the cold-rolled texture of silver and 70-30 cartridge brass. The major annealed texture components were found to be of {120)-- <001> and {113)<785>. Although the direction for easy magnetization for this type of alloy by the single-crystal technique is not avaliable, knowledge from related studies indicated [Ill] as the easy magnetization direction, similar to that of nickel.&apos; Therefore, a cube orientation, if present in the tape core, would be most detrimental to its magnetic performance.3 In its cold-rolled state the tape had < 111 > directions in the rolling plane 14.5 deg from the rolling direction.&apos; But the coercive force of the tape in such condition will be excessive due to large amounts of internal stresses, and therefore makes its use impossible for memory applications due to long switching time. In lower nickel alloys, suchas 50-50 nickel-iron and 65 pct Ni-Fe sheets, previous investigators4"7 found the presence of cube texture on annealing at 900° to 1000°C. Although no cube texture was found in annealed 1/8-mil tape,"&apos; its presence in some annealed 1,/4-mil tape cores was firmly established a year ago as verified by significant differences in magnetic properties. The present investigation is devoted to the orientation study and related magnetic measurements on three thicknesses of the ultra-thin tape, namely, 1/8 mil, 1/4 mil, and 1/2 mil, cold rolled directly from annealed 4-mil stock in the cold-rolled state as well as after they were annealed at 760°C (1400° F) and 927°C (1700°F). The results obtained might serve to elucidate the development of annealed texture as well as to establish clearly the importance of preferred orientation on the magnetic performance of such memory tape core despite its well-known low magnetic anisotropy exchange energy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Samples were taken from one production heat (0.010 wt pct C, 0.004 P. 0.016 S, 0.80 Mn. 0.29 Si. 79.69 Ni. 4.42 Mo. 0.054 Co, 0.002 Ti, 0.12 Al, 0.04 Mg, 14.56 Fe). AS part of a research project sponsored by the Signal Corps Engineering Laboratories, which had the objective of obtaining a magnet wire of good conductivity and low temperature coefficient of resistance, a comprehensive literature survey, supplemented by experimental work, revealed that a linear relationship exists for solid-solution alloys between the electrical conductivity, K, and the temperature coefficient, a, as expressed by the equation: k = a/ß where ß is constant for the solvent metal and a - per°C. tR0 It has long been known that the electrical conductivity at a given temperature and the temperature coefficient of resistance of binary alloys are related to their constitution by the LeChatelier-Guertler rules, as illustrated by Figs. 1 and 2: Rule 1—In alloy systems consisting of a heterogeneous mixture of two phases, the electrical conductivity and temperature coefficient vary as a straight line, if the composition of the alloys is given in volume percentage, Fig. 1. Rule 2—In solid solutions, the electrical conductivity and temperature coefficient are always lower than those of the solvent metal, and usually a considerable decrease occurs with the first small percentage additions of the solute metal, Fig. 2b. If the two components form a continuous series of solid solutions, the electrical conductivity and temperature coefficient curves take the form of a U-curve, Fig. 2a. That some kind of proportionality exists between electrical conductivity and temperature coefficient of resistance is implied by the LeChatelier-Guertler rules and by study of data such as those given by Smith and Palmer,&apos; Fig. 3. Dellinger2 in 1910 first recognized this relationship in a number of commercial copper wires, ranging in conductivity from 94 to 100.7 pct I.A.C.S. He gave the ratio of temperature coefficient to the percentage of conductivity as a constant, C = 0.003939. A year later, Lindeck observed that the linear relationship was valid for a wider range of conductivity in "various sorts of copper," and concluded that the product of resistivity and temperature coefficient was 6.78x10-5 1.5 pct. Since then, this relationship seems to have been entirely ignored. Conductivity-Temperature Coefficient Relationship If the electrical conductivity of copper solid-solution alloys with phosphorus, silicon, arsenic, antimony, aluminum, nickel, manganese, and iron is plotted against the temperature coefficient of these alloys, the diagrams in Figs. 4 and 5 are obtained. Similar data were found with copper-rich solid solutions containing magnesium, cobalt, and titanium,&apos;" as shown in Fig. 6. In all cases, a linear relationship exists. SINCE boyhood I have had a keen interest in mining engineering. To see the prospector with his pack outfit and his pan, followed by the assayer and the trained engineer, has always had -something of the lure of romance for me. It is appropriate that the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers should hold a general meeting in California, since this State has long been a home of mining engineering. Here, after the early open methods of mining, it has been necessary for the universities to train men in geology and mining, so that the earth could be penetrated and the rich ledges opened. In the eighty years in which the mines of California have been offering experience to the miners of the world, we have seen mining engineering evolve from a comparatively simple art, covered largely by rule of thumb, into a complex group of specialties, each utilizing the very latest discoveries in the various fields of physical sciences. Mining, too, has become a great business requiring large financial support and the most careful handling. Those mining engineers who have applied new processes in special fields have thus been able to give a wide-flung range to their activities in all parts of the world. The hand of nature in distributing minerals over the surface of the earth has compelled the mining engineer to become a modern pioneer, facing the heat of the tropics as well as the frozen regions of the north. There has been a marked cosmopolitan aspect to mining engineering, since the engineer had to go wherever the prospector discovered favorable leads. This has meant dealing with the harshest of conditions, the handling of labor of all sorts, the control of sanitary conditions, and relations to all forms of transportation. Naturally this has called on some of the very best minds in all countries to unlock the stores of hidden wealth. To make them available for civilization has been the job of the mining engineer.

Vegetation on mine wastes was an important topic at the International Symposium on Ecology and Revegetation of Drastically Disturbed Areas held at Pennsylvania State University August 3-16, 1969. This article summarizes the Symposium papers that dealt with the nutritional and physical aspects of plant establishment on mine wastes. Surface Coal Mining Spoils Germany-In toxic spoil banks created by open-cast coal mining, the material was extremely acid and low in nutrients. It sometimes contained toxic quantities of minor elements and also had a water repellency that resulted in little leaching and high erosion. Consolidated Gold Fields Limited published annually an excellent reference, GOLD 1978, GOLD 1979, giving the Supply and Demand for Gold, Recent Developments and Prospects, Soviet Gold Production, etc. This outstanding reference is authored by Christopher Glynn, Investment Department, London, Great Britain. The 1978 Report marked the tenth anniversary of Gold Field&apos;s review of world gold market developments; and from it and the 1979 report, the following information was derived. The recovery of gold is widespread in the Soviet Union. Originally, gold was mined principally in the Urals, but in the last few years several major deposits have been discovered in the southwestern areas of the Soviet Union. One of the most dramatic discoveries has been the Muruntau deposit in Western Uzbekestan. This deposit, discovered in 1958, is reported to be the largest and among the lowest cost producers in the Soviet Union. It is located in Armenia, approximately 750 km (465 miles) northeast of the Iran-Afghanistan border, lying in the center of the Kyzylkurn (Red Sands) desert at the foot of Muruntau Mountain. Free gold occurs in both fine and coarse size in quartz veins up to 20 m (66 ft) thick associated with a small percentage of sulfides, mainly arsenopyrite. The ore zone constitutes a large gold-enriched stock work of about 4 sq krn (1.5 sq miles). The development of Muruntau was a major undertaking with open -pit development and construction of the mill and refinery complex started early in 1967, and the first gold bar poured in mid-1969. At the end of the first construction stage in 1970, the mill building was an imposing structure about 38 m (125 ft) high and 330 (1,080 ft) in length housing, probably, 11 parallel milling circuits. The first construction stage also included six 50 m (165 ft) diameter thickeners and 30 Pachuca tanks. The original mill complex was tripled in size after large additional gold reserves were discovered at a depth of 600 m (1,970 ft); and the deposit is now being exploited by both open- pit and underground workings. Ore is ground in semi-autogenous mills with the free gold being recovered into a high-grade concentrate on shaking tables. Table tailings are purnped to duplex spiral classifiers in closed circuit with the grinding mills. Classifier overflow is then thickened before being transferred to the Pachuca building where cyanidation takes place. An ion exchange resin is then added in a countercurrent

Cheep tests are normally constant load tests. Such tests approximate some types of service conditions and therefore are justified from the engineering point of view. Coupled with this consideration is the advantage of simplicity inherent in constant load tests, as contrasted with the comparatively complex requirements of a constant stress test. It is not surprising that the vast majority of creep tests reported are of the constant load type. Despite the enormous amount of accumulated creep test data, plastic flow is by no means completely understood. The widespread use of constant load tests is at least partly responsible for this lack of understanding. Any attempt to analyze deformation must involve the more fundamental quantity stress, rather than load. It is possible to predict constant load behavior from known constant stress data, but the reverse is much more difficult. When a metal specimen elongates, as in a creep test, the cross section decreases, maintaining constant volume. Thus For a constant stress test the force on the specimen must be decreased as the cross section decreases, that is, this force must be inversely proportional to the elongation of the specimen. An-drade has described three methods of obtaining the constant stress condition,l-3 each of which is relatively complex. The most recent proposal,³ suggests a major simplification which maintains the simplicity of the constant load test while approximating quite closely the desirable condition of constant stress. Andrade&apos;s device is admittedly more accurate but the method described below has definite advantages Consider a specimen in the form of a "V" supported at its ends. If a weight be applied at the vertex of the angle, the stress in each leg of the "V" If this stress causes an elongation ?1 in each leg of the "V," the angle decreases from a. to a smaller angle a1. The quantity sec — thus decreases with specimen elongation while the quantity 1/A increases. By selecting proper initial conditions it should be possible to hold S/So very nearly constant at unity. The proper initial conditions are realized when a0 is made equal to approximately 90°. Fig 1 compares the ratios of S/S0 for a0 = 85, 90, 95, 100°, with a0 = 0, that is, a straight speci- men, for true strains up to e = 0.10. It may prove convenient to measure X, the movement of the vertex, rather than the true elongation 1. Contour lines of X/lo are also plotted in Fig 1. The method for obtaining constant stress described above is especially suited to the testing of small wires, but may easily be extended to rods of any diameter through the use of a suitable grip which serves as the vertex joining two identical rods forming the legs of the "V." Richard Strong (Oliver Iron Mining Div., U. S. Steel Corp.)—Mr. Waterman states (p. 59, Trans., January 1954): "Core-sludge combining factors have been calculaied for any combination of core-sludge recovery on the basis of several logical assumptions: 1—The sludge sample loses reliability geometrically as sludge recovery drops. 2—The sludge sample should not be used if the percentage of sludge return is less than the percentage of core recovered. 3—A core sample should receive a weighting at least equal to the percentage of core recovery." Assumptions 1 and 2 seem justified at Chuquicamata and most geologists would agree to the validity of assumption 3. However, contrary to the statement quoted above, the core sample does not in general receive a weighting at least equal to the percentage of core recovery when the Chuquicamata methgd is used. Furthermore, the basic Chuquicamata method is identical to the Longyear or relative volume core-sludge assay combining method. Finally, the Chuquicamata method does not, in its present form, reflect true geometric loss in sludge sample reliability according to the relationship L = AR (N-1) The basic equations representing the two steps of the Chuquicamata method can be combined algebraically as follows (using the symbology of the original article except as noted): Vol A + B Assay 2 = ASA = Assay 1 Vol A VolB Core Assay [I] Vol A CA.F + ASA (100 —F) Combined grade =[21 100 Pct where F and (100 — F) are the core and adjusted sludge assay factors from Fig. 3. This quantity is real and positive for all values of F and core recovery less than 100. Therefore the true core factor is always less than F except when F is equal to 100. If sludge recovery is 100 pct, Eq. 3 can be further simplified as follows: Let F = percentage of core recovered. Let Vol A = Vdh (100 Pct — Pct CR) where Vdh is the total volume of the sampled interval and let Vol B = (Vdh — Vc.) Pct CR where V, is the core volume in the sampled interval at 100 pct core recovery. Then combined grade = Vo V. CA Pct CR- + Assay 1, 100 Pct — Pct CR Vdh Vdh [4] 100 Pct Eq. 4 shows that when sludge recovery is 100 pct the laboratory sludge assay receives significant weight in the Chuquicamata method, even at 100 pct core recovery. The maximum weight assigned to the laboratory sludge assay depends on drillhole size, as follows: Eq. 4, with suitable changes in symbology, is identical to Royce&apos;s formula 8,&apos; which is a statement of the Longyear or relative volume method of combining core and sludge assays. If Mr. Waterman&apos;s assumption 3 is of paramount concern to the geologist, the Royce method (for core recoveries of 60 pct and above) or a method employing the percentage of core recovered as a core weighting factor are the only recognized methods known to the writer which achieve the desired result. A modification of the latter method embodying Mr. Waterman&apos;s assumptions 1 and 2 would result from applying the factors from Fig. 3 directly to the laboratory core and sludge assays.

(written discussion*).-In connection with Mr. Waring&apos;s quotation of Urbain&apos;s work, attention may be drawn to a remark found in the report of the session of the Société de Chimie Physique,1 held in December, 1909, that, while all blendes contain gallium in larger or smaller quantities, those blendes carrying indium are generally free from germanium, and vice versa. Urbain, furthermore, . expresses his conviction that this behavior, being related to the condi-tions of deposition of the ore, should be an important factor in determining the origin and mode of formation of zinc blende deposits., In. searching the literature for the naturally expected sequel to these remarks, there is found a report on the extraction of germanium from blende, after many months&apos; work, on a commercial scale;2 then a paper3 on some Spanish blendes, all containing cadmium, examined by Urbain&apos;s &apos;method (this paper contains, also, very important work on the com-position and color of blendes, as well as on the occurrence of organic .matter and of inclusions in such blendes), and a second paper on Spanish blendes in general, in which this original point of Urbain&apos;s concerning the relative quantities of the three rare elements is taken up.4 Angel del Campo finds that of 68 specimens examined, four only were entirely free of germanium, gallium, and indium;. 38 had small proportions, while 19 were notably, and seven relatively rich in the three rare metals. He found the relative frequency to be: gallium in 60, germanium in, 50, and indium in 38; all three occurred in 29 cases; germanium and gallium together in 18; gallium and indium together in four; germanium and indium together without gallium, in none; four had gallium only, three had germanium only, and one had indium only; in 23 it appeared feasible to extract these elements. FRIENDS of the late Charles F. Rand presented in 1930 a sum of money from which the income is available to support various phases of the work of the Institute in which Mr. Rand was so deeply interested. At present the fund amounts to $10,000. The specific terms of the deed of gift are as follows: "The fund collected to establish a memorial to the late Charles F. Rand shall be placed in the custody of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, to be set up as a trust to be known as the `Charles F. Rand Foundation,&apos; the income of which shall each year be applied to a distinct purpose to be decided upon in that year by vote of the Board of Directors. This purpose shall be such as to promote the general welfare of the Institute and to constitute a permanent memorial of the usefulness of Mr. Rand, who for many years gave unstintingly of his time and talents in its service.

The North Texas district incorporated in this paper corresponds with the Railroad Commission&apos;s District No. 9, and includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Knox, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger, and Young.† Table I,Oil and Gas Production in North Texas District, has been changed to conform with the nomenclature of pools designated by the Commission in order to facilitate compilation of the data, since most of the companies operating in the area are coming more and more to recognize one central authority in the matter of naming each new oil pool. No effort is being made to discuss the structural characteristics of the region, since it is generally known by oil men that most of the oil and gas comes from Pennsyl-vanian, with some of less importance from the Mississippian and Ordovician. Development during 1944 There were 1550 wells drilled during 1944, an increase of 450. Of this number, 677 were completed as oil wells, and 11 as gassers. Production increased 1,505,025 bbl., making the year&apos;s total 43,172,005 bbl. of oil having an average gravity of 40". Development generally, however, was somewhat disappointing. The 47 new pools, extensions, or new pay horizons in old fields, had a combined initial production of only 19,146 bbl. It is estimated that these wells added approximately 10,000,000 bbl. to the reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was in the Caddo conglomerate in the Hildreth pool, Montague County. During the year, 66 wells were completed as the result of three extensions, I to 136 miles west, northwest and north of the field. Young, Archer, and Clay were the most active counties. Eleven new potential - oil fields were developed in Young County, nine in Archer and nine in Clay. Outlook for 1945 In spite of the fact that exploration as a whole was disappointing in 1944, prospects for increased development are bright for 1945. At the close of last year, 2.1 geophysical crews were operating in the district, which, together with the Ohio Oil Company&apos;s No. I W. R. Ross, a wildcat Strawn discovery in King County, 1 1/2 miles beyond the west boundary of district 9, stimulated a lease play extending over four counties. The Bureau of Mines investigated selective extraction of Au and Ag from a low-grade Au ore containing Hg. Gold and silver were extracted from the ore in cyanide slurries, and Hg extraction was suppressed with sodium or calcium sulfide. Maximum Au extraction and minimum Hg extraction were obtained using solutions containing 17 kg NaCN/t of solution (0.34 lb NaCN/st). Increasing the cyanide concentration increased Hg extraction without increasing Au extraction. Mercury extraction from the ore was suppressed with 0.5-2.9 kg CaS/kg Hg (0.5-2.9 lb/lb) in the ore. Gold-to-mercury ratios of 100:1 to 400:1 were obtained in the leach solution, and on the activated carbon in a CIP circuit.

NOTE BY THE EDITOR.-This resume of a Technologic Paper which is published in full by the U. S. Bureau of Standards, is brought before the membership of the Institute with the object of affording an opportunity for the open discussion of results of an investigation by the authors named above, of some phases of the manufacture of steel rails which are of great importance to manufacturer and consumer alike. This resume will be presented at the Pittsburg Meeting of the Institute. Discussion is invited, by either members or non-members of the Institute. The discussion may be sent in writing to the Editor, in advance of the meeting, or should preferably be presented in person at the meeting. Summary of Researches and Conclusions The main objects of this investigation were to determine, from measurements taken at representative rail mills, the present American practice regarding the temperatures at which rails are rolled; to demonstrate the ease and accuracy with which such temperatures may be measured, without interfering in any way with the manufacture of the product; to find out what the "shrinkage clause" in rail specifications really means; and, finally, to determine some of the physical properties of rail steels, particularly those of interest in manufacture, some of which seem to be insufficiently known as yet. 1. Ingot Temperatures.-Measurements made in four mills show that ingots for rails are rolled at temperatures ranging from 1,075° to 1,150° C. (1,965° to 2,100° F.), and that, in a series of 20 to 40 ingots, the variation in temperature from one ingot to another is only 10° to 20° C. 2. Finishing Temperatures.-Rails are finished at temperatures ranging broadly from 880° to-1,050° C. (1,615 to 1,922° F.), but usually ranging within 50° C. of 935° C., and occasionally above 1,100° C.
