(written discussion ?).-There are few mine officials who will not say that there is, great need of vocational schools in mining communities, but the absence of success of so many of these ventures makes them wary about establishing such schools. They have neither the time nor the facilities to study the systems and to analyze the factors that have made certain schools a success and others a failure. In the first place, it is difficult to secure the proper instructors. Educators cannot make the appeal to the workmen, because of their lack of experience, and experienced men who are capable of the appeal are not usually educators, knowing nothing about the presentation of the subject. Then, too, there is ordinarily no objective in a mine school. The workman is not reached by a school that makes him merely a more valuable man to his employer, unless he can participate in the gain. An objective, as promotion or financial gain, would appeal to the man and would make for regular attendance. Usually vocational schools are run like all others-a number of subjects at a time, continued from one day to another. This is impractical for the workman, whose mind cannot work like the mind of a school boy. The school boy is spending most of his time in school work, while the man is doing it as a side issue, and he cannot be expected to pick up tonight's lesson where last night's left off. The workman is accustomed to the idea of completing a job and doing one thing at a time; his mind is trained that way, and for this reason a school that works on the principal that each lesson is a complete job, with no reference to the previous or following lesson, will go a long way toward removing one of the things that has caused many failures. The usual vocational schools .in mining communities are either very elementary, or are run by the engineering staff and, consequently, are too advanced. There is no plan between. It is believed that there is a possibility of a halfway type, but this is a subject that is large enough for a paper by itself and is entirely, too broad to be presented as a discussion.

THE term oil property, in this discussion, includes any type of easement or grant under which petroleum might be produced; it ranges from the mere right to drill on undeveloped wildcat acreage up to a fully developed oil property. The values of an oil property, as thus defined, vary widely according to the use for which it is intended, whether it is from the viewpoint of the speculator, the fraudulent stock promoter, the refiner and pipe-line owner, or the oil producer. The market value of a property is usually a combination of some two or more of these influences, and occasionally a combination of all of them, but we prefer to treat each viewpoint as distinct from the others, allowing the reader to make his own combination in such proportions as his inclination and property seem to require. This paper will treat the subject from the viewpoint of the oil producer. However, the other influences have such bearing on the cost of property to the producer and on the price he might obtain by its sale as to warrant brief discussion of them. Speculation, particularly lease speculation, is a parasitic growth on the oil industry, healthy enough, but of no economic value. The class of property usually dealt in for this purpose is the undeveloped lease. Its speculative value may have some relation to its probable productive value, but most frequently this value is the product of temporary excitement due to local development. The lease speculator, seeking out the trend of development or securing early information regarding a proposed test or a new discovery, immediately secures leases whose market value will be increased when the existence of such development becomes more widely known. His profits are purely unearned increment. Not proposing to spend money in exploration, he can afford to compete in purchase with the operator, who, in addition to bonus paid, must spend large sums in testing out his own acreage and that of the nearby speculator as well. It has a tendency to compel unduly high bonuses.

The commercial neutron-gamma log measures the intensity of gamma-rays produced by the interaction of neutrons with nuclei in the formation and in the bore hole. This measurement gives information concerning the distribution of neutrons around the neutron source, and in particular gives information on porosity or fluid content. Another type of information is contained in the frequency or energy spectrum of the neutron capture gamma-rays. The capture gamma-rays of each element, in fact of each isotope, have only those energies characteristic of that isotope.'" The neutron capture gamma-ray spectrum, if obtainable, would permit the identification of the elements producing the spectrum. Such information would have considerable value in oilfield exploration work if it could be applied practically in well logging. Experiments have been carried out at the La Habra Laboratory of California Research Cop. to determine the feasibility of a method of well logging in which neutron capture gamma-ray spectra are measured down hole. In these experiments, spectra were obtained for artificial formations under simulated borehole conditions, using actual borehole geometry. This paper will describe the experimental apparatus and methods and will present the spectrum curves for several formations. THEORY Basic Formulas The neutron capture cross section of an element is a measure of its tendency to capture neutrons. The macroscopic cross section, or cross section per cubic centimeter, of a material composed of several elements is the sum of the cross sections of the nuclei making up 1 cc of the material. This is expressed in the equation SB = Sn1s2, ..........(1) where SB is the macroscopic cross section, s, is the cross section of a nucleus of type i, and ni is the number of nuclei of type i/cu cm. If N is the number of neutrons absorbed per second by the composite material, then the number captured by element j is Ni = N nisi/SB = N nisi/Si ni si ......(2) When the nucleus captures a neutron, a new nucleus is formed, which is usually in an excited state and falls to its ground or unexcited state by emitting one or more gamma-ray quanta.* The emission spectrum has been measured for many elements (see Table 1). The intensity of gamma-rays produced by an element is proportional to the number of neutrons captured per unit time by the element, which in turn depends on the capture cross section of that element and the capture cross sections of the other elements present which are competing with the first element for thermal neutrons. In a small sample of material the number of neutrons, N, captured per second is N = ?SB, ..........(3) where $ is the thermal neutron flux and SB is the macro-scopic cross section defined above. The number of neutrons captured by element j is N1 = ?ni si = N ni si/SB . ......(4) The number of gamma-ray quanta of energy, E, pro-duced per unit time by element, j, is I(E)=Nni si/SB P(E) .......(5) where P(E) is the emission probability of element, j, for this gamma-ray energy. Borehole Effects The capture gamma-ray spectra of many elements have been measured accurately in academic and government laboratories. These measurements are made on small samples, and from these measurements the emission spectra of the elements are obtained.

Colloidal silica dissolved in aqueous suspensions of high surface area thoria was permitted to adsorb on the thoria surface. Silica in three forms was identified by means of infrared spectroscopy and characterized by Si-O vibrational modes in the 9.0 to 10.5 region. A band at 9. 1 was attributed to free unad-sorbed silica, while adsorbed silica resulted in bands of greatest absorbency at 9.4 or 10.3p, depending upon the character of the surface bonding. Size considerations, the amount of silica adsorbed, and the character of the infrared spectrum for strongly adsorbed silica has been interpreted as evidence of formation of chain or layer silica linkages on the thoria surface. Infrared spectroscopy has been used successfully in recent years for the identification of minerals and synthetic inorganic substances. Unfortunately, infrared studies of silicate minerals have not proceeded to the point that unambiguous assignments may be made for Si-O vibrational modes as affected by lattice substitutions and structures. Several investigators have presented infrared spectra of silicate minerals, 1,7 and their work has pointed to the potential value of infrared to identify minerals as well as to note the sensitivity of various Si-O modes to structural and substitutional environments. The strong infrared absorption of various Si-O vibrational modes makes the infrared method a very useful tool for the study of silica adsorbed on the surface of solids of high surface area. Spaepen et a18 studied the adsorption of silica on thoria surfaces from aqueous solutions of silicic acid up to 300°C. A general review of the application of the infrared method to the study of surface adsorption has been presented by Pliskin and Eischens.9 EXPERIMENTAL Du Pont colloidal silica, Ludox SM (16.36% SiO2) and Ludox HS (30.25% SiO2) in aqueous suspensions were used as the sources of silica for the adsorption studies. The thoria used for this study was supplied by Union Carbide Nuclear Co.* under the preparation *Chemical Technology Div., Union Carbide Nuclear Co., Oak Ridge, Tenn. . number D-16-650. It was fired from the oxalate at 650°C and had a surface area of 32.4 ± 0.6 m2 per g measured by nitrogen adsorption. The chemical analysis of the D-16 thoria in ppm was: CO3= (5500), NO3- (< 4), so4±PO4 (100), and Si (20). The Ludox silica was placed in contact with the thoria in a two-liter autoclave10 between room temperature and 250°C. Slurries were made by placing 1 g of thoria in one liter of distilled water containing various additions of the silica sol. Samples were removed from the autoclave by opening a small stainless steel valve. Extracted samples were centrifuged for 10 min and excess solution was decanted. The sample was then dried for several hours at 80°C. Infrared samples were prepared by thoroughly mixing 10 mg of the thoria with 400 mg KBr in polystyrene vials on a "Wig-L-Bug" amalgamator. (communication to the Secretary, February, 1897): I have read Mr. Austin&apos;s paper with considerable interest, more especially as the designing and study of such works have been an attractive occupation for me during the last twenty-five years. Mr. Austin says that a " plant on a terraced site has generally been considered the most advantageous," and also that " many advocate a level site," while he himself " is disposed to advocate a modification of the latter plan, utilizing an extended surface with a moderate slope."* Among the advocates of the terraced sites as against level ones, I do not recollect ever meeting a metallurgist who had even made an attempt to plan his works for level ground, or who had, in a lucid interval, figured how much he gained or lost by one or the other method. The average metallurgist starts with the assumption that it is rational to conduct his material down hill because its movement is aided by gravity, while to elevate ore or furnace-material by machinery he vaguely believes to be not alone wrong in principle, but also unnecessarily expensive. A DETAILED description of the many variations in iron mining and transportation practice in Minnesota would require much space. Since a fairly detailed description of the practices then in use was published in the guidebook issued in connection with the meeting of the Institute on the iron ranges in I920, and subsequent developments have been described by E. E. Hunner,1 M. H. Barber,2 and A. E. Anderson, J. M. Riddell and G. J. Holt,3 it will not be necessary here to do more than review the highlights of current practice. Details on any points of interest can be obtained through correspondence with the operators involved. [T] The iron ores of Minnesota, which have been formed through enrichment of the iron formation in which they occur, largely by the removal of silica, are usually covered by a blanket of glacial drift known locally as "surface." Surface material, including sand, clay, hardpan and boulders, makes up the greater portion of the stripping in open-pit operations. In some instances, stripping also includes taconite and "paint rock," directly below the surface material and overlying the ore. Taconite is the iron formation, a ferruginous chert with interbedded slate layers. "Paint rock" is a local term for oxidized slate layers interbedded in the iron formation, high in phosphorus, alumina and moisture. The iron ores fall into two classes: (I) direct shipping (merchantable ores or ores requiring no treatment except possibly crushing or screening to make an acceptable sized product), and (2) ores requiring beneficiation (such as sintering, drying, washing, jigging, high-density treatment, or magnetic separation in the case of magnetite). The Mesabi Range produces chiefly soft Bessemer and non-Bessemer ores. The Cuyuna Range produces mainly low-manganese brown ore and high-manganese black ores, with some iron ore. The Vermilion Range yields mainly Besse¬mer and non-Bessemer iron ore, with some hard or lump ore that finds use in the open hearth. Open-pit mining is limited to the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges but underground mining is done on all three. The choice of mining methods is determined by the relative economics of overburden¬-removal and shaft-mining costs. STRIPPING PRACTICE Common practice has been to remove the bulk of the overburden during the winter season and to mine during the summer. In the present emergency many operators are forced to forego the economies attained by year-round utilization of equipment and to equip for, and carry on, stripping and mining simultaneously. In the normal years or lean years to come, most properties probably will be over-equipped and high depreciation charges will have to be absorbed.

INTRODUCTION General IT is general practice to evaluate the strength properties of a particular metal from its stress-strain [(S1 - E1]) curve obtained by means of a conventional tension test. Such a stress-strain curve, Fig I, illustrates two important properties of a metal, its ability to strain harden, and its ability to withstand a certain limiting stress, the "fracture stress,"[ (s&apos;r)], and a certain limiting strain, the "ductility" [(e1)], before it fails by separation. These two fracturing characteristics are the coordinates of the point of fracture in Fig I. In the case of a metal which necks in a tension test, both the fracture stress and the ductility (measured in a tension test) are dependent upon (a) the shape of the neck and (b) average values of the stresses and strains over the cross section at the moment of fracture. However, for the purpose of this investigation, these average quantities, rather than the actual values, may be considered for reasons of simplicity. It appears that the conclusions also hold true if the analysis were carried out for actual values of fracture stress and ductility at the locus of failure. In this paper, the effects of straining (at room temperature) by various methods on [ ] the above metal characteristics, which were determined by subsequent tension tests will be discussed. According to our present knowledge, any such prestraining results in a stress-strain curve (in subsequent testing by tension), Fig 2, the general shape, or flow characteristics, of which can be derived from the original stress-strain curve of the unstrained metal minus a certain portion exhausted by the initial straining. This phenomenon is called strain hardening, and may be measured by the magnitude of the cut-off, or the "effective strain," from which the new curve must start in order to coincide in its plastic branch with the original stress-strain curve.

Nason thinks I could not have studied Mr. Witherbee&apos;s paper and doubts the arithmetic used, but in his discussion arrives at practically the same conclusion. He says 10 ft. thickness of ore over a square mile should give 27,878,400 tons, allowing 10 cu. ft. per ton of ore. This is correct, but if he reads carefully he will see that this depth of ore was figured as covering one-tenth of the surface, which reduces the figures to those used by Mr. Nason. I did not say, however, that there were 2,300,000,000 tons of ore in New Jersey, but that applying the same method of computation as used by Mr. Nason, to the area of the iron ore-bearing gneisses in New Jersey, we would get a total of 2,300,000,000. I did say, "In this area are located 366 magnetite mines that have been worked more or less. These lenses may easily be capable of producing (on an average) 1,000,000 tons each, and there are probably double the number listed not opened up." Thus my estimate for New Jersey, as far as any was made, would be: Probable ore 366,000,000 Possible ore in addition 732,000,000 1,098,000,000 Mr. Nason&apos;s final conclusion of his personal estimate was one-half of what he erroneously read to be the estimate given in the paper, or half of 2,300,000,000, which equals 1,150,000,000. So the two estimates seem to differ less than 5 per cent., and we have the two sister States of New York and New Jersey on an equal footing of productive possibilities in magnetic ore.

My original intention was to give a full account of Southern furnaces, ores and cokes; but, owing to the difficulty of getting reliable information, I confine this paper to a general description of the ores used in, and immediately around, Chattanooga. Mr. L. S. Colyar, Manager of the Rising Fawn furnace, wrote me in answer to an inquiry as to what ores they were using, " Below I give you analyses of the mixture of ore we have been using for the past seven or eight years. IT has long been recognized that it would be highly desirable to be able to predict the temperatures at various points in a burning fuel bed and their variations with changes of the properties of the fuel and the rate of air supply. Experimental investigations of fuel-bed tempera-tures1-4 have not been lacking, but the absence of any theoretical back-ground has made it impossible to use the results of these tests as a basis for prediction, except in a very general way. A mathematical analysis5, based on a somewhat simplified theory of the distribution of heat in a, fuel bed, has recently been completed by the author. Even though numerical values of some of the coefficients are not. known, the calcula-tions result in some conclusions of general significance. Thus, for example, it appears that when the temperatures throughout the fuel bed can be calculated, the rate at which ignition of the fuel by underfeed action can be maintained can also be calculated. The uncertainty concerning the values of the coefficients referred to above is a serious limitation on the use of that method. The following paper presents a discussion of these coefficients and includes estimates of their values based on the data now available. A brief description of the theory on which the analysis is based, and some results of the calculations showing their degree of agreement with experimental results, are presented by way of introduction to the discussion of, the coefficients. Attempts were made in 1908, at the Great Falls Works, to produce ingots direct from the Butte precipitate by smelting the material in a reverberatory refining furnace. The ingots produced in this manner averaged 99.4 per cent. of copper and 0.40 per cent. of arsenic and antimony. The copper content being considered too low, it was decided to cast the copper into anodes and to treat the anodes in the electrolytic plant. No. 1 Furnace, in which the precipitate was treated, was a regular cathode refining furnace previously employed in making wire bar, cake, and ingot from electrolytic cathodes. The hearth of the furnace was 24 by 12 ft., having a capacity of 100,000 lb. of cathodes. The furnace was coal fired, and the copper was dipped by means of trolley ladles. IN addition to the humanitarian aspects of a dust-control program, certain economic benefits are becoming more fully recognized and now furnish a greater incentive to the mill operator to eliminate the dust from his plant. It is well known that a favorable working environment promotes increased efficiency and improves the morale of em-ployees, with a consequent decrease in labor turnover rates. One progressive mining company estimates its direct and indirect labor turnover costs at from $40 to $50 per man; for skilled labor, such as machine operators, the cost may approach $100 per man. While these figures may not be typical of every plant, they do indicate a potential savings in operating costs. Dust signifies waste; its elimination de-creases maintenance costs of mechanical and electrical equipment; its recovery is often justified from the standpoint of values contained in the collected material, although in large-scale milling operations handling low-grade ore this may not be an important factor. Perhaps the most significant trend in industrial sanitation is that dust-control equipment and procedures are becoming recognized as integral parts of the mill flow-sheet. Exhaust ventilating systems are now afforded equal care in design and mainte-nance to that given other machinery more closely related to the process,

Metal chlorides were formed by reacting metal oxides and calcium chloride; the effect of additions to the reaction mixture was studied. It was found that by use of proper additions, metal chlorides could be prepared from mixtures that were not reactive under ordinary conditions. ManY recent metallurgical developments involve the use of chlorine or chlorides as primary reagents; good examples are found in the production of ductile zirconium and titanium by reduction of their chlorides with magnesium. Various methods of preparing metal chlorides are used and many others have been proposed. Some chlorides are formed by the direct combination of a metal or alloy with chlorine. Other processes react chlorine and metallic oxides; carbon or other reducing agents are usually employed to reduce the metal oxides and so promote chlorination. Metallic chlorides have also been produced by the exchange of chlorine between metal oxides and a chloride, such as sodium chloride. This type of reaction was the basis for the old process of chloride roasting in which metal ores were roasted in the presence of salt. Soluble chlorides thus formed
