Originally round tensile specimens of a eutectic Zn-A1 alloy develop elliptical cross sections during superplastic deformation. This observation, coupled with a detailed study of the microstructure and preferred orieniation, suggests that crystallographic slip and continuous grain boundary migration or re-crystallization are important processes during super-plastic deformation. In spite of the extensive activity in superplasticity1-15 and the numerous explanations proposed, no single model has had universal acceptance. It has been established, however, that the general requirements for superplastic extension of two-phase alloys include an extremely fine, stabilized grain size of the order of a few microns, a temperature about equal to or greater than one-half the melting point, a critical range of strain rate, and a similarity in the mechanical strength of the major phases. The proposed models can perhaps best be characterized in terms of the important phenomena associated with them. These phenomena include: phase instability,1 diffusional creep by volume diffusion3 or grain boundary diffusion4,5 slip and continuous grain boundary migration or recrystalliza-tion,= grain boundary Sliding,7-9,13,14 and dislocation glide.'5 In this paper, experimental observations will be reported which support a model involving slip and continuous grain boundary migration or recrystalliza-tion. Specifically, a correlation will be made between this model and the development of elliptical cross sections as originally round specimens are superplas-tically deformed. For the most part, superplasticity studies have been conducted with eutectic or eutectoid alloys. Probably the most thoroughly studied material has been the monotectoid Zn-A1 alloy.1,2,6,12,13,15 No attention to the eutectic Zn-A1 alloy has previously been reported, and the results discussed in this paper represent part of a general study of the superplastic properties of this alloy. MATERIALS The alloys used in this investigation were prepared by melting appropriate quantities of 99.99+ pct A1 and 99.999 pct Zn in air, mixing, and pouring into a water- cooled stainless-steel mold. Wet-chemical analysis was conducted with each heat of alloy prepared, using the procedure of Fish and smith.16 The composition of the eutectic alloy was 95.1 wt pct Zn. Ingots about 2 in. thick were rolled to 0.4-in. plate at about 300°C with a reduction of 5 to 10 pct per pass. Specimens were machined from the plate with the tensile axis parallel to the rolling direction. The specimens were round, with 0.150-in.-diam, 1.25-in.-long gage length, and 0.25-in.-diam threaded grip sections. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens were mounted inside a uniform-temperature quartz tube which was surrounded by a double elliptical radiant furnace with a 12-in.-long uniform-temperature hot zone and a low thermal capacity. The tube extended through the top and bottom of the furnace and permitted rapid quenching of the loaded specimens when quickly filled with cold water at the conclusion of the test. The quench precluded any effects on specimen microstructure from a normal, slow cool. Constant stress was applied to test specimens by suspending a load on a constant stress cam of the type described by Hopkin.17 The design of this cam permitted application of a constant stress for elongations up to 200 pct. For greater elongation, approximately constant stress conditions were maintained by systematically reducing the load manually. RESULTS As part of an investigation of the superplastic properties of the eutectic Zn-A1 alloy, evidence was obtained for the development of elliptically shaped cross sections as originally round specimens were extended. For example, after an elongation of about 100 pct, a round specimen with an initial diameter of 0.150 in. became elliptical with major and minor axis of 0.128 and 0.88 in., respectively. Photographs are presented to illustrate the ellipticity developed during superplastic deformation, Fig. 1. The specimen shown was deformed at a stress of 500 psi, at a temperature of 285°C, and a strain rate of 2.28 x 10-2 min-1. This value is typical of those observed with superplastic materials. In the summer of 1917 it was decided to fireproof the main Tramway hoisting shaft of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Butte, Mont. The shaft has three hoisting compartments and one pump compartment; it is timbered with 12 by 12-in. (30.5 by 30.5-cm.) fir timber, and is 2475 ft. (754 m.) deep. Subsidence and displacement of the surrounding country rock had produced exceedingly heavy ground, and had carried the shaft out of line, in several places, by as much as 2 ft. (0.6 m.) displacement. Constant repairing and realigning of the timbers had been necessary in order to maintain clearance for the cages. The most feasible method of fireproofing, therefore, seemed to be to cover the timbers with a coat of concrete applied with the cement gun. The cement gun, which is operated by compressed air at ordinary mine pressures, feeds a mixture of sand and cement through a hose to a nozzle having a water connection. The mortar in fluid form is thus sprayed upon the prepared surface in thin layers, which can be built up to any desired thickness. The cement gun can be set up at any convenient point; satisfactory results have been obtained with the nozzle a distance of 500 ft. (152 m.) from the gun. The shaft was thoroughly overhauled and the timbers put in the best possible state of repair. Between the 1000 and the 1400 levels, much loose ground lay against the shaft timbers on the north side; this was breast-boarded back and a 30-in. (76-cm.) reinforced-concrete retaining wall was erected, leaving a space of 12 in. (30.5 cm.) outside the shaft timbers to allow for future movements of the ground. For convenience in handling men and materials, it was arranged to concrete the auxiliary hoisting-cage compartment and the pump compartment first, using the cages of the main hoist to serve the cementing crews. The auxiliary cage was then available while the remainder of the shaft was being concreted. A tight partition of 2-in. (5.08-cm.) plank was erected between the auxiliary and the adjoining hoisting compartments, for better protection of men riding on the cages. The application of concrete made this

This report summarizes the work that has been done during the past several years in adapting resins for use as auxiliaries in mine roof support. The resins were applied in two ways: 1) by injection into the strata, and 2) as a bonding agent for roof bolts and reinforcing bar. The Explosives and Mining Chemicals Department of the American Cyanamid Co. has worked during this period in cooperation with the Roof Control Research Group of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the Pattin Manufacturing Co., the J. H. Fletcher Co., the Homestake Mining Co., the U.S. Steel Corp., the National Mines Corp. and the Pocahontas Land Corp. in an effort to create resin formulations and methods for applying them as a practical and sate type of roof support for mining areas particularly where conventional support is inadequate, yet expensive. This, work has involved much pioneering in a field where theory, speculation, and pure mythology predominates, and little basic engineering data is available. It is strange butt true that, despite the importance of roof control both from an operational and safely standpoint, there is scarcely a mining' company in this country that has an engineer, or anyone, assigned to the study of roof support problem, except temporarily--after a bad roof fall. The responsibility for improving roof control methods seems to have been placed entirely upon the shoulder, of the USBM, various State departments of mines, and individual roof bolt manufacturing; companies. It was in cooperation with the USBM that Cyanamid first developed resins for mining use.

LouisiaNa ranks fifth among the oil-producing states. In 1941 the state-wide production was slightly in excess of 118,000,000 bbl. of crude oil and conden-sate—an increase of 15,000,000 bbl. over the total production for the year 1940. During 1941, south Louisiana produced approximately 90,900,000 bbl. of oil, while north Louisiana produced approximately 27,000,000. South Louisiana, therefore, produced about 3¼ times more oil than north Louisiana. During the past year, 574,800,000 M cu. ft. of natural and casinghead gas were produced in Louisiana; thus 1941 gas production exceeded the 1940 production by 104,900,000 M cu. feet. Completion records for the year 1941 show that 1512 wells were completed in or adjoining producing fields. These wells, which were drilled to extend known producing areas or were located within producing areas, are not considered as wildcat wells. Of the total number of field wells drilled, 1152 wells found production; the remaining 360 were junked or dry and abandoned. This means that 76 per cent of the wells drilled were successful. Considering the precarious nature of oil-field development, this percentage of new producing wells is exceedingly satisfactory. Of the total number of field welis com-pleted as producers, approximately 86 wells found new and distinct producing sands. During the past year, 30 new fields were found. Four parishes—namely, Caldwell, Catahoula, Orleans, and Natchitoches— entered the ranks of oil-and-gas-producing parishes in the state during that period. This brings the total number of oil-and-gas-producing parishes in the state up to 48. Thus, 75 per cent of the parishes in Louisiana now contain one or more oil and/or gas fields. Although sufficient data are not available to list the addition reserves found in Louisiana during 1941, it is felt that such reserves undoubtedly exceed twice the total production for that year, or at least 200 million barrels. In reserves, therefore, Louisiana ranks third among the various oil-producing states. South Louisiana Although 16 new fields were found in south Louisiana, the outstanding developments in that part of the state were not limited to new discoveries. In fact, most of the increase in reserve in that area has been most consistently accumulated through extensions of known producing sands and through the finding of new sands in already productive fields, especially at depths below the presently producing sands. Since data concerning most of the new extensions and sands are too extensive for discussion here, the more important developments arc briefly outlined below: Abbeville, Vermilion Parish.—Production extended ½ mile to the west. Anse La Butte, St. Martin Parish.—New oil sand discovered at 9400 ft., thus extending production to east flank. West flank defined by dry holes. Barataria, Jefferson Parish.—New oil sand discovered on east side of field at 7620 ft. New

IN western Argentina, in the Province of Mendoza and the Territory of Neuquén, there is a series of solid bitumen deposits which are claimed to be the most extensive in the world. In a linear belt 500 km (311 miles) long, roughly paralleling the axis of the Andes but occupying a variety of positions with respect to the orogenic structures, more than 100 outcrops have been reported. Approximately 70 of these have been prospected, and some mining has been planned or attempted for about half this number. Limited tonnage, high sulphur content, inaccessibility, labor shortages, and disastrous fires have taken a heavy toll among these operations, and in 1947, only 4 deposits were being actively mined, but 8 more were being explored and developed with a view to placing them in production. Inasmuch as these deposits are currently yielding a substantial fraction of Argentina's limited domestic supply of solid fuels, a brief account of the deposits and of the small industry based upon them will provide a commentary on Argentina's fuel problem. CHARACTER OF SOLID BITUMENS The solid bitumens of Mendoza and Neuquén are petroleum derivatives, as is indicated by the following ultimate analysis: [CONSTITUENTS PER CENT Hydrogen6.8 Carbon82.4 Nit.rogenI.6 Oxygen2.7 Sulphur2.2 Ash4.3 100.0] In physical appearance they bear a close resemblance to coal and are commonly called carbón. Their specific gravity has an extreme range of 1.10 to 1.777 in 36 samples weighed, but the average is between 1.14 and 1.24. The material is black, lustrous to dull, with blocky to sub-conchoidal fracture. Though brittle, the purest material is softer than anthracite and exhibits slightly more cohesion. This bituminous material is generally known as asfaltita or asphaltite, but definitive chemical studies indicate that the term asphaltite or grahamite can be applied correctly only to the exceptionally pure material of the Auca Mahuida district in Neuquén. Some other name should be used for the chemically variable bitumens found in all other districts, and the designation "asphaltitic pyrobitumen" has been proposed by Carlos A. S. Piscione.1 At the present time these bitumens, are finding favor as solid fuel and as a gas-producing medium. They yield heat values of 8650 to 9750 cal,2 or 14,500 to 16,750 Btu per pound, and in consequence of their excellent heating qualities and the scarcity of imported coal, they are marketed as far away as Buenos Aires at a price of go to 95 pesos, or approximately $22 to 23, per metric ton. In burning, the material swells and decomposes into solid, fluid, and gaseous fractions which burn violently though nonexplosively. Its combustibility has been responsible for disasters and virtually complete destruction at Mina La Esperanza and Mina Santa Marta, and for minor mishaps elsewhere, as at Mina Escondida in August 1947.

IDENTIFICATION Of the kinds of orientation relationships that may exist among crystals is an important problem in the metallurgical field. As an aid to its solution standard orientations of several orders of twins would be very useful for rapid analyses to discover high-order as well as low-order twin relationships. Although data have been published that give orientations for three generations of twins, these data are not readily useful in the form presented; i.e., in a stereographic projection with one pole per orientation.1 However, accurate data based on calculations of the positions of all {100} planes for such groups would be very useful when presented in tabular form. Therefore, calculations have been made for a group of four orders of twins and the data are listed in Table 3. Illustrative applications are considered briefly, with the idea of pointing out what may be done with large groups of orientations. METHOD OF COMPUTING ORIENTATION OF A TWIN It is common practice to describe the orientation of a crystal in terms of the positions on a stereographic net of the poles of certain planes of the crystal. A single position on a net may be given it terms of two angle variables, two sets of which appear in the following equations: [Polar NetWalff Net x=rsinOocos4pyx=rcos0. y=rsinB,sin4,ny-rsin0.cos¢,, z=rcos0,,z=rsin0.sin4,,] The three numbers x, y and z determine a length r as well as a direction [(0, 0)] in an X, Y, Z coordinate system. In the present case, r will be set equal to (h2 + k2 +12)1/3, where h, k and 1 are the usual Miller indices for a crystallographic plane, a restriction that facilitates determination of the positions of poles of new planes from those of old or known ones,2 as will become evident later. Furthermore, since twinned lattices have certain planes in common, it is an easy matter to determine the orientation of a twin of a crystal if the orientation of the crystal itself is known. We start therefore with a crystal of known orientation (positions of three {100} poles given) and determine where the cube poles occur in first, second, third and fourth-order twins. Methods for identifying twinned lattices and for making the calculations to find the orientation of a twin have been published.3 4 Reference 4 will be illustrated in the calculation of the orientation of a twin, even though this method differs from the one used by the writer in obtaining the following data on four orders of twins. It has been stated, by Sir James M. Barrie, that "the man of science appears to be the only man who has something to say, just now-and the only man who does not know how to say it". The friendly jibe of the novelist contains enough exaggeration to make it humorous to the followers of Huxley and Spencer; but could any litterateur poke similar fun at the exponents of the avowedly utilitarian branches of science-the men of technology-without suggesting an unpleasant truth? Indeed the engineer does bungle language deplorably. He makes a fetish of efficiency, yet he shows no regard for the effective use of one of his most important tools-the pen; he believes devoutly in accuracy, yet he employs an instrument of precision as carelessly as a small boy handles a gun. This inconsistency may be due to causes such as were indicated by the Academic Senate when it undertook to explain the defective writing of the; students in this university.* The Senate suggested that the student is "constantly subjected by his environment to the unedifying influence of myriad examples of poor English", and that he is also affected by "a certain public prejudice against correctness of expression ". With these statements most of us will agree. Our local newspapers, for instance, tend to spoil the student's taste for good English; later in life, as an engineer, his daily contact with illiterate men inclines him to careless speech and slovenly writing. A simple model has been developed which describes the steady-state solute distribution in Ti-H type systems above the eutectoid temperature in the presence of a temperature gradient. The solute distribution is dependent on the shape of the phase boundaries. An interesting result, and one that is not observed at steady state in thermal diffusion below the eutectoid temperature, is the existence of a two-phase region. The heat of transport for hydrogen in a titanium, Q*a, over the temperature range 275" to 650.C is determined to be 4500 * 230 cal per mole. The heat of transport for hydrogen in B titanium, QB* over the temperature range 320" to 590.C is found to be 630 ± 200 cal per mole. It is also shown that thermal diffusion provides a method by which phase bounduries above the eutectoid may be determined in Ti-H type systems. IN modern technology materials are being used at constantly increasing temperatures under greater temperature gradients. Thus atomic migration in metal alloys due to a temperature gradient (thermal diffusion) may in some cases occur to an observable extent. The thermal diffusion of hydrogen in zirconium has in recent years received considerable attention1-' because of the use of zirconium alloys in nuclear power reactors. The thermal diffusion kinetics below the eutectoid (547°C) are fairly well understood. At steady state the solid solution, a, and hydride, 6, phases are completely separated with the hydride precipitating at the lower temperatures. No experimental work has been carried out in the a + B region although Droege4 suggested that a complete separation of the two phases, as observed at temperatures below the eutectoid, might not always occur. In the present investigation a simple model has been used to determine the steady-state solute distribution under a temperature gradient in Zr-H type systems heated above the eutectoid temperature. The solute distribution is shown to be dependent on the shape of the phase boundaries in the constitutional diagrams and several typical cases are discussed. The model has been applied to Ti-H. This system was chosen in preference to Zr-H because of its much lower eutectoid temperature (-300°C as compared with 547.C), thereby reducing experimental errors due to oxidation and hydriding. The heats of transport for hydrogen in the a and B phases of titanium also have been determined since they were required to compare the proposed thermal diffusion model with experiment. THEORY In the presence of a temperature gradient the atomic flux in a single-phase region of a two-com-ponent system of which the atoms of only one component are diffusing is given by:' J = - U\dx + RT3 dx) which can be written as: j-D(dn/dt +Q*n/RT2)dt/dx [11 J - -D\dT + RT2)dx [1] where D = diffusion coefficient, n = solute concentration, T = absolute temperature, R = gas constant, dT/dx = temperature gradient, and Q* = heat of transport. At steady state (J = 0) Eq. [I] leads to the solute distribution: n = noexp Q*/RT where no = a constant depending on total solute content. The heat of transport Q* can be experimentally determined from the steady-state distribution. In the present paper we shall determine the solute distribution in systems having the constitutional diagram exemplified by Ti-H shown in Fig. l.' As shown, N,(T) and NB(T) are the equilibrium solute concentrations in the a and 0 phases at temperature T. Lines AA' and CC' define the region of interest to us. The following assumptions are made: 1) Steady-state conditions prevail. 2) In a single-phase region all points on an isotherm have the same thermodynamic potential so that the composition over an isotherm is uniform. If a two-phase region exists, thermodynamic equilibrium is found only at phase interfaces. However, we assume the component of the concentration gradient along an isotherm to be small so that the composition in each phase is approximately the same as at the interface and is given by the constitutional diagram, Fig. 1. 3) There is appreciable diffusion of only one component. 4) We shall consider only the case where Qa*, QB*, and Qg*, the heats of transport for solute diffusion in the a, B, and 6 phases, respectively, are positive. This has been observed for the thermal diffusion of hydrogen in zirconium3 and titanium.10 We will show that the steady-state solute distribution above the eutectoid is primarily determined by the heats of transport and the temperature dependence of Na(T) and Np(T). It may be quite different from the steady-state distribution below the eutectoid. For example, we will see that, under certain conditions,

The existing data on precipitation in Cu-Be alloys have been reconciled with some new data to present a more complete and rational analysis of the atomic rearrangements involved in the process. Two different coherent precipitates were proposed. Each is responsible for a type of diffuse X-ray diffraction effect. THE nature of the atomic rearrangement involved in the precipitation of the compound y-Cu-Be from supersaturated solid solutions of the copper-base alloys has been the subject of two extensive investigations.'-" he precipitate in this alloy system has a rather simple structure; at equilibrium it has a body-centered cubic unit cell with copper atoms on the corner sites and beryllium atoms on the center site. While a simple mechanism would be expected to obtain for the precipitation process, those which have been proposed do not adequately explain all of the reported data. The purpose of the present report is to rationalize some of the previous observations and to contribute new data on the subject obtained by the usual techniques of structure analyses. The Cu-Be system of alloys represents one of the most extensively investigated precipitation systems, so a detailed review of the pertinent literature on structure is in order. Striations: Since one of the important features of the mechanism—the habit plane—is determined by microscopic examination, microstructural features that have been observed should be considered at this time in order to assess their role in the precipitation process in Cu-Be alloys. One of the most prominent features appears as regularly oriented markings or stripings (ripples or striations) across the crystals on a suitably polished and etched sample of the aged alloy. These have been observed and interpreted by many workers. Masing and Dah14 observed striations in both the a and /3 phases of a 2.5 pct Be alloy, and attributed them to the beginning of the precipitation of very fine y crystals along favored planes of the a matrix and to the local decomposition of the £ crystals into a plus y. These markings were apparent in both the a and /3 phases of the micrographs given by Smith5 for a 2.75 pct Be alloy, while Moore" detected them in the a matrix phase using polarized light. Desch7 attributed the markings to fine precipitate particles lined up on a family of matrix planes like Masing and Dahl had done, and he identified the planes as those of the (111) family, the slip planes of the matrix. The striations were presumably the structure which Northcott- eferred to as "martensitic." He found that this structure was present in samples that had been aged under widely different conditions with hardness values ranging from 160 to 400 VHN. Later Guinier and Jacquet' also found striations in both the a matrix and secondary /3 phase. Their analyses showed that the striations were along (110) planes of the matrix phase, apparently in contradiction of the results of Desch. They found that the striations were developed during aging on the surface of a specimen that had been polished prior to aging.' On this basis they concluded that the striations represented mechanical deformation by slip along (110) planes of the matrix resulting from precipitation stresses.'" Similar but fainter striations were observed in the same manner on an A1-Cu alloy sample, in which the change in volume was much less than for Cu-Be alloys and

Some information has been published on the sulphur dioxide concentration of gases from D wight-Lloyd machines sintering lead ores but most of this relates to the customary practice in which the charge is relatively high in lead and is sintered in two passes Over the machine. It is thought, therefore, that the following observations on sintering in one pass a low-lead, low-sulphur charge may be of interest. The data were obtained in sintering lead sulphide notation concentrates mixed with minus 20.mesh oxide ore, the mixture carrying 16,8 per cent Pb and 5.3 per cent S. No returns were used because of the limited amount of sulphur available as fuel, but the mixture pelletized readily. to make a satisfactorily permeable bed on the sintering machine. As there was a possibility that the SO z might be utilized, a series of runs was made to determine the concentration ofSO2 in the gases at different points along the wind box, and the effect on this concentration of changes in the wind-box vacuum. Several runs each were made with vacuums (as measured in inches of water at the wind box) of (1 2 to 1 in., ('1 4 to 3% in. and (3) 6 to 5% in. The averages of the determinations from each series are platted On the graph (Fig, 1). The vertical scale shows the percentage by volume of SOz (as determined by the Reich method), and the horizontal scale shows the time e~pressed as percentage of the total sintering time. Sintering was considered to be complete when no SOz could be detected in the gases. In all cases the depth of bed was 4 1/2 in. and the weight of dry charge per square foot of hearth area was 45.2 lb. Other data are given in the table. The volume of gases corresponding to the several points along the wind box at which SO2 determinations were made could not be measured, but has been calculated from the SO2 Content and sulphur elimination on the assumption that the volume is uniform throughout the sintering period. This is not strictly true, as with a given vacuum the volume usually will drop slightly toward the middle of the period and increase toward the end. However, this made is a reasonable approximation. several interesting features are brought out by these data. In general, the published data on SO 2 concentration in sintering under ordinary conditions show a high SO2 concentration in the early stages followed by a rapid decrease in concentration and with relatively little SOz in the gases from the last half or third of the operation. In other words, the greater part of the sulphur elimination is obtained in the first third or half of the period. In these runs, the 6-in. vacuum, which approximates the usual operating condition, gives a curve that follows this customary pattern. Maximum SO2 concentration is obtained 234 min. after

The flotability of crushed zinc oxide pellets which were doped to produce more n-type or less n-type (more p-type) properties was studied with a Halli-mond tube. Flotation data are presented to show that the pH at which 50% recovery occurs and the collector concentration for 50% recovery depends upon the concentration of doping agent added substitu-tionally for zinc in zinc oxide. The time of sintering of pellets has a slight effect on flotation behavior. A speculative model is proposed to explain the observed behavior in light of the fact that zinc oxide is a semiconductor and has a space charge region at the surface. Experimental verification is necessary before the proposed model can be established as correct. In recent years, the attachment of flotation reagents to minerals has been shown to depend upon the behavior of an electrical double layer which exists in the liquid near the mineral-liquid interface.' Thus, a mineral placed in water will undergo a surface re-arrangement, most likely be preferential dissociation of lattice atoms or by surface adsorp-tion-desorption reactions, to form a dissociation electrical double layer with the solution. Among the many factors which influence adsorption processes, the past history of the mineral itself is one of the most important. Because of trace impurities, minerals from different localities may exhibit marked differences in flotation behavior. This is not unexpected, since investigators who have studied the detailed structure of the double layer's3 have known for some time that the impurity content of many minerals may exert strong influence on double layer variables. For this reason, their studies were usually made with minerals of high purity. The precise relationship between impurities in a mineral and double layer parameters such as capacity and electrostatic potential has been obscure. However, impurities in a semiconductor type mineral which is in contact with a solution have been recently shown to produce changes in the properties of a space charge layer which extends into the bulk of the semiconductor to a distance of one micron or more.4 The double layer is influenced by the space charge layer, whose origin is best discussed in terms of the band theory of solids. A qualitative description of the behavior of impurities in the bulk of a semiconductor, from a chemical point of view, is useful at this point. Briefly, impurities or defects (lattice vacancies, interstitials, etc.) in semiconductors such as PbS, ZnS, FeS2, Cu2S, NiS, NiO, Fe2O3, ZnO, CdS, MnO2 and many others, behave somewhat like acids or bases in water. SMITH*-Mr. Rockwood has presented a very interesting paper on problems of the mineral aggregate industry in meeting specification requirements, which apparently are ever decreasing in tolerance. May I call attention to a method of mineral separation that may be of value in separating the flat aggregate particles from the more angular ones and possibly the soft particles from the hard. The method is the old Pardee spiral coal separator, extensively used many years ago in the anthracite region for separating rock and bone from anthracite coal.1 The success of the process depends on the relative coefficient of friction of the aggregate particles to be separated rather than on their relative specific gravity. The flat and the soft particles normally will slide more slowly and stay on the inner spiral until they reach the delivery spout at the bottom whereas the round and the angular pieces will work to the outer edge and fall off into a spiral of larger diameter. The capacity of the separator is increased materially by having three inner spirals, with a separate feed for each, on which the particles travel more slowly, and one outer spiral from which the more rapidly traveling pieces slide to the bottom. IRVING WARNER*-I have long been convinced that much of the equipment and methods developed for mineral dressing might be advantageously employed in the mineral aggregates industry, and more particularly in the production of sand and gravel. The two industries are not well acquainted with each other or their problems. They have separate trade publications. The difficulty with the situation is that there are few large sand and gravel plants and few provided with technical services in their own organization or by retainer. This does not refer to engineering organizations but rather to improvement of plant technic in processing.

E. M. Fitchett (Johnstown, Pa.)—The fact stated by the authors that: "In the laboratory, without marked efficiency decreases, the authors have deposited zinc successfully from solutions containing as high as 1 g per liter of germanium," (p. 465, paragraph 3) is most unusual. A similar statement is made in the summary and conclusions: "Germanium alone, within normal operating limits does not cause large efficiency losses." The limits are not defined. These facts are directly contrary to much of the published history on the effect of germanium in zinc electrolysis. A description of the conditions leading to such a successful electrolysis would be of interest to all engaged in the production of electrolytic zinc. It is unfortunate that the authors of this paper did not determine the actual concentration of germanium and cadmium in the solutions which they electrolyzed after a zinc dust purification. This purification will take out a variable amount of these impurities, depending upon the composition of the dust, type of agitation, presence of activating agents, etc. Probably every electrolytic zinc plant in this country has accurate methods, both wet and spectrographic, for determining germanium and cadmium. These specific methods, adopted from the standard analytical literature, are often available to educational institutions for the asking. The headings of Fig. 2 and of the two tables, with their definite concentrations of germanium and cadmium (which are not so definite according to the footnotes) could possibly be somewhat misleading, since the actual amounts of germanium and cadmium present during electrolysis are not known. Even the 1 hr electrolysis time might be too short for a study of this type; 12 or 24 hr tests might be much better. Commercial solutions have been known that gave over 90 pct ampere efficiency during the first hour of electrolysis, but no metal at all after 24 hr.
