SMITH*-Mr. Rockwood has presented a very interesting paper on problems of the mineral aggregate industry in meeting specification requirements, which apparently are ever decreasing in tolerance. May I call attention to a method of mineral separation that may be of value in separating the flat aggregate particles from the more angular ones and possibly the soft particles from the hard. The method is the old Pardee spiral coal separator, extensively used many years ago in the anthracite region for separating rock and bone from anthracite coal.1 The success of the process depends on the relative coefficient of friction of the aggregate particles to be separated rather than on their relative specific gravity. The flat and the soft particles normally will slide more slowly and stay on the inner spiral until they reach the delivery spout at the bottom whereas the round and the angular pieces will work to the outer edge and fall off into a spiral of larger diameter. The capacity of the separator is increased materially by having three inner spirals, with a separate feed for each, on which the particles travel more slowly, and one outer spiral from which the more rapidly traveling pieces slide to the bottom. IRVING WARNER*-I have long been convinced that much of the equipment and methods developed for mineral dressing might be advantageously employed in the mineral aggregates industry, and more particularly in the production of sand and gravel. The two industries are not well acquainted with each other or their problems. They have separate trade publications. The difficulty with the situation is that there are few large sand and gravel plants and few provided with technical services in their own organization or by retainer. This does not refer to engineering organizations but rather to improvement of plant technic in processing.

IN the mining and handling of sulphide ores, some degree of oxidation takes place on the sulphide surfaces, which are exposed to the atmosphere. It is, moreover, well known that the oxidation compounds formed are a factor when such ores are subsequently treated by flotation. Modern operating technique and reagents are capable of contending with this condition to a major degree, provided that the proportions of the reagents used are varied correctly. This is particularly true at the Tennessee Copper Co., where the ore treated contains pyrrhotite in addition to other sulphides. A number of soluble salts, some of which are unstable, can be formed during the oxidation of the sulphide ores. Those unstable salts, whose oxygen requirements are unsatisfied, are constantly changing to more stable forms because oxygen reacts with them during the crushing, grinding and other operations of ore preparation. We add no chemicals of any kind to the ore pulp in its preparation for flotation feed. Consequently the only compounds that are present in the flotation feed are those produced by the natural oxidation of the ore in the presence of air and water. The Tennessee Copper Co. ore is composed of from 60 to 70 per cent sulphides and from 40 to 30 per cent nonsulphide material. It is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the nature of these various oxygensulphur compounds nor their effect on flotation, but to describe a method for [ ] correcting the effect. Suffice it to say that we have found that the reducing sulphur and oxygen salts have a depressing action on our bulk flotation process.1 From long experience we find that the best means of correcting for this variation in our work is to increase or decrease the quantity of xanthate, the promoting agent, as the quantity of the reducing salts increases or decreases. REGULAR production of chrome in Turkey started in 1860 with the operation of the Bursa deposits (5, Fig. I). Others were discovered at Makri, near Fethiye (3, Fig. I). For 33 years Turkey remained the principal source of this mineral. While new discoveries were coming in elsewhere, Turkey's output declined until 1921, as a result of four successive wars, which ruined the economics of the country. In 1927 a revival came with the production of 18,000 tons. In that year the Société Minière de Fethiye was formed. This company now operates mines in the Vilayets of Aydin, Denizli, Burdur and Mentese, and it has reached a maximum production of between 80,000 and 90,000 tons annually. The Turkish output therefore increased from 29,000 tons in 1930 to 55,000 tons in 1931; and to 119,009 tons in 1934. The second phase in the increase in chrome production in Turkey came about in 1935, when the Government decided to reorganize and control the mineral industry of the country according to the principles of "government control" of the present regime. Up to that time the mineral resources of the country had been exploited by private concerns. In 1935, the M.T.A. (Maden Tetkik ve Arama) Institute (Institute of Mining Research and Geological Survey) was established by the Government to do the geological and geophysical survey work and discover new mineral resources for the country. Before the establishment of the M.T.A. Institute, the chief chrome-producing region was Fethiye (3 and 4, Fig. I). As a result of the extensive work of this bureau, many new chrome deposits have been discovered and are now in production. The operational field of the mineral industry was given to Eti Bank, another Government-sponsored and Government-controlled establishment. Eti Bank gradually took over the exploitation of existing mines by purchasing them from privately operated companies. Attention was first given to the Zonguldak collieries and to the different chrome deposits scattered over the country. The Guleman mines (14, Fig. 1) were developed and put in operation in 1936. Since then the bulk of Turkish chrome output has come from this mine, which yields the highest grade ore in the world (averaging 52 per cent Cr2O3). In 1939, the recently discovered chrome deposits to the north of Eskisehir went into production, yielding ore having a Cr2O3 content of 51 to 52 per cent. Today, more than ever, the efforts of both the M.T.A. Institute and the Eti Bank are concentrated on finding new deposits and placing them in operation. There are still many promising regions of the country that merit systematic surveying and prospecting for chrome ores. Thus it is probable that Turkey will continue to make noteworthy progress in chrome output. As the annual chrome production of

Desulphurization of liquid iron by reducing slags of the electric-furnace type was studied from 65 heats. Variations were made in basicity over a wide range and in FeO up to about 5 pct for their effects on desulphurization. The role of FeO in desulphurization from the blast furnace, to the electric furnace, to the oxidizing conditions of the open hearth is shown to fit a relatively simple pattern of behavior. THE mechanism which controls the desulphurization of molten iron by basic slags has been the object of several investigations. In particular, equilibrium determinations have been made both in the field of basic open-hearth slags, which have a high iron-oxide concentration, and in the field of blast-furnace slags which have a very low iron-oxide concentration. In both cases the desulphurization ratio has been found to increase with increasing basicity of the slags; however, the mechanism of desulphurization differs in the two cases. In basic open-hearth slags desulphurization occurs mainly as a partition of iron sulphide:&apos; FeS * (FeS) and the desulphurization ratio is approximately independent of iron-oxide concentration in the slag. In blast-furnace slags the concentration of iron oxide is very low as a result of the highly reducing conditions in which they are formed. The controlling reaction for desulphurization is then:2,3 FeS + (CaO) <=* (CaS) + (FeO) The slags of the reducing stage in the electric furnace have an iron-oxide concentration which is intermediate between blast-furnace and open-hearth slags. The study of the mechanism of desulphurization for these slags has been the object of this investigation. The importance of low (FeO) in the slag for desulphurization was first verified by Bardenheuer and Geller,& who found that high desulphurization ratios were obtained in highly reduced slags. It was recognized" hat iron oxide in the slag becomes a controlling factor in desulphurization only at FeO concentrations approximately under 5 pct. A recent investigation conducted by Buehl,7 upon the suggestion of one of the authors, confirmed this opinion from the results obtained from a heat conducted in a small arc furnace. In the present investigation, slags of very high basicity, such as often are encountered in the basic electric furnace, could not be studied, but equilibrium data have been obtained for slags in a wide basicity range. The iron-oxide concentration in these slags ranged from 0.08 to 15 pct and was controlled by the addition of silicon to the metal. Other constituents of the slags were mainly CaO, MgO, SiO2, A120,, and CaF,. The experimental technique was essentially the same as that of previous investigations.1 8-lo In an open magnesia-lined induction furnace, 65 lb of Armco ingot iron was melted. An atmosphere of hydrogen was maintained over the melt for 1 hr to bring the carbon content down to approximately 0.010 pct maximum. The bath then was exposed to air for 25 min to remove hydrogen. The electrodes were put in place, and the furnace was operated from this point on in an atmosphere of nitrogen. A synthetic slag was added to which additions of silicon and iron sulphide were made. Introduction Oil shale deposits have been exploited in various countries throughout the world, but generally with government aid. The oil-shale industry of Scotland perhaps is the oldest and best-known; the largest was conducted in Manchuria by the Japanese during World war 11 as a source of liquid fuels for military uses. In general, foreign oil-shale deposits that have been exploited are much lower grade than those in the western United States. Considerable interest began to be shown in western oil shales in 1916; the peak of activities was in 1923. The catlin operation, near Elko, Nevada, perhaps was the nearest approach in this country to an oil-shale enterprise on a commercial scale. Over 100 companies were formed, ostensibly for exploiting the oil shale; a large number of them, however, proved to be stock promotions only, which gave the embryo industry a black eye. The Bureau of Mines operated an experi-mental oil-shale retort plant near Rifle, Colorado, from September 1926 to June 1927 and again from April 1928 to July 1929, after which the plant was dismantled. By this time the East Texas oil fields had come ill and the country lost interest in substitute liquid fuels. During World War II the Nation again became concerned about the magnitude of its petroleum reserves. Congress (April 1944) directed the Bureau of Mines to build and operate demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shales, and agricultural and other products; a five-year Program was authorized. *&apos; a part of this program the Bureau of Mines has built, at Anvil Points near Rifle, Colorado, a retort plant and develOped an experimental mine to supply the plant with oil shale. An important part of the mining work at Rifle is to devise methods and select practices for mining the oil shale on a commercial scale at the lowest practicable cost. The product to be mined has a relatively low value, a fact that must be kept in in mind. The combined aim of those in charge of the mining and those in charge of retorting is to demonstrate that the shale oil can be produced at a cost per barrel corresponding to the current quotation for crude petroleum —or at least very close to it. Plans call for an uninterrupted flow of broken oil shale from the lace in the mine, through crushers, through the retorts and thence to the disposal dump. The disposal of the spent shale in the Ride area should present no unusual problem. Many factors govern the value of dredging-ground, and much capital can be wasted by the mistaken policy of contracting for the purchase of property arid the installation of machinery before a thorough examination has been made. To the uninitiated investor the presence of gold is generally the criterion, and very superficial evidence is necessary to satisfy him as to this point. he couuiclers the comprehensive report of a competent engineer as a wasteful extravagance, aild cannot understand why the engineer requires so much time and money to ascertain the information on which to base his conalusions, when the promoter can furnish him such pleaaing and satisfactory data with but little expenditure of time aud money. A shear wave velocity laboratory apparatus and techniques for testing rock samples under simulated subsurface conditions have been developed. In the apparatus, two electromechanical transducers operating in the frequency range 0.5 to 5.0 megahertz (MHz: megacycles per second) are mounted in contact with each end of the sample. Liquid-solid interfaces of Drakeol-aluminum are used as mode converters. In the generator transducer, there is total mode conversion from P-wave energy to plain S-wave energy. S-wave energy is converted back to P-wave energy in the motor transducer. Similar transducers without mode converters are used to measure P-wave velocities. The apparatus is designed for testing rock samples under axial or uniform loading in the pressure range 0 to 12,000 psi. The transducers have certain advantages over those used by King, 1 and the measurement techniques are influenced less by subjective elements than other methods previously reported. An electronic counter-timer having a resolution of 10 nanoseconds measures the transit time of ultrasonic pulses through the sample; elastic wave velocities of most homogeneous materials can be measured with errors of less than 1 percent. 5- and P-wave velocity measurements on Bandera sandstone and Solenholen limestone are reported for the axial pressure range 0 to 6,000 psi and for the uniform pressure range 0 to 10,000 psi. The influence of liquid pore saturants on P- and S-wave velocity is investigated and found to be in broad agreement with Biot&apos;s theory. In specific areas, the measurements do not conform to theory. Velocities of samples measured under axial and uniform loading are compared and, in general, velocities measured under uniform stress are higher than those measured under axial stress. Liquid pore fluids cause increases in Poisson&apos;s ratio and the bulk modulus but reduce the rigidity modulus, Young&apos;s modulus and the bulk compressibility. INTRODUCTION Ultrasonic pulse methods for measuring the shear wave velocity of rock samples in the laboratory have been gradually improved during the last few years. Early experimental pulse techniques reported by Hughes et al.2 and by Gregory 3 were beset by uncertainties in determining the first arrival of the shear wave (S-wave) energy. Much of this ambiguity was caused by the multiple modes propagated by piezoelectric crystals and by boundary conversions in the rock specimens. Shear wave velocity data obtained from the critical angle method, described by Schneider and Burton4 and used later by King and Fate sand by Gregory, 3,6 are of limited accuracy, and interpreting results is too complicated for routine laboratory work. The mode conversion method described by Jamieson and Hoskins7 was recently used by King 1 for measuring the S-wave velocities of dry and liquid-saturated rock samples. Glass-air interfaces acted as mode converters in the apparatus, and much of the compressional (P-wave) energy apparently was eliminated from the desired pure shear mode. A more detailed discussion of the current status of laboratory pulse methods applied to geological specimens is given in a review by Simmons.8 A new shear wave velocity laboratory apparatus has been developed for testing rock samples under elevated pressures. This apparatus employs liquid-solid interfaces as mode converters. The technique for generating pure shear waves at liquid-solid interfaces was developed from studies of critical angle methods.6 Two identical transducers are placed in contact with opposite ends of the rock sample, one transducer acting as an ultrasonic energy emitter or generator and the other acting as an ultrasonic energy receiver or motor. Introduction In Europe, longwall mining accounts for over 95% of coal produced from deep mines, whereas in the U.S.A., longwall accounts for less than 5% of deep mine coal production. There are many reasons for the difference, but in general: a. U.S. mine operators have invested heavily in continuous mining or conventional equipment which continues to produce acceptable results; b. There 1s a reluctance to change from, a familiar (and proven) mining method to an unfamiliar one, despite promises of huge production increases,; c. Multi-seam mining in Europe has made longwall the only really viable mining method, whereas In the U.S.A. multi-seam mining (particularly in "below-drainage" mines), is relatively rare; d. Although some spectacular results have been achieved by longwall in the U.S.A.(I), the general performance of longwall in this country has not been good enough to generate much enthusiasm for its wide application; e. The much higher level of investment in face equipment required for longwall when compared to alternative methods (approximately $7.5 million for a medium seam longwall installation and $1 million to $1.5 million for a continuous miner section). However, declining productivity, national energy requirements and safety legislation are creating a situation in which longwall as a viable mining method is being examined more closely and in more places than hitherto. This paper, therefore, attempts to identify some of the principal criteria needing examination in any assessment of the feasibility of longwall application, the limitations of information for those criteria in the decision making process and the need for further research and development to assist the mine operators make the decisions.

THE object of this experiment was to obtain a usable set of field curves for determining the susceptibility of rocks with the vertical magnetometer. The need often arises for determining the susceptibility of rocks in the field in order to interpret magnetic anomalies obtained. This is particularly true when diamond drilling has been done and the relation to the surface rocks of the samples taken is desired. Many methods of measuring rock susceptibility have been developed, but in general they require careful shaping of the sample or pulverizing it in addition to delicate laboratory measuring instruments designed for the purpose. The requirements for a practical method for the determination of susceptibilities are as follows: I. There should be as little alteration as possible of the specimen. 2.
