The Umgal a section of the We1gedacht Exploration Company Ltd., a member of the Rand Mines Group, is situated near Utrecht in the province of Natal, South Africa. Two coal seams, the Alfred and Gus, are mined to fulfill commitments to both inland and export markets. To increase extraction in the high quality Alfred Seam, pillar extraction, known locally as stooping, was introduced to the mine in September, 1980. Mining is a conventional cut-drill -blast operation and takes place under a unique set of geological conditions viz. moderately thick seam at 3.5 m; rapidly varying cover from 25m to 120 m; an overburden containing competent sandstone and dolerite horizons. In order to improve the understanding of the manner in which the pillar and overburden interact during pillar extraction, a largely visual system of monitoring backed up by roof-floor convergence measurements was employed. Preliminary analysis of the observations suggests that roof collapse or goafing occurs in three phases but is only initiated once a critical amount of convergence has taken place.

In June, 1911, the writer spent a few days in studying the economic geology of the vicinity of Park City. During this rather hurried visit a number of specimens of ore were collected, which have since been examind. The results of these investigations show that bournonite (PbCu-SbSa) is present in the ores in greater or less quantity. This fact has never before been reported, as far as can be learned. The failure to recognize this mineral is due to its similarity to tetrahedrite, with which it has probably been confused during a long period of years. Jamesonite (Pb2sb2s6) has been reported from the region in a rather doubtful manner, but the writer has seen it in notable amounts from several mines, and can offer the first analysis of this mineral from the district. Calamine (HzZn2SiO5) was found at one mine and has never been ecognized and reported from the district. Geogbaphy and Geology Park City, Utah, is located at an elevation of about 7,000 ft. above sea level on the eastern slope of the Wasatch mountains. It is situated approximately 25 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. ' The geology and ore deposits have been described in detail by Bout well and Woolsey.' The mines visited are situated south-southeast from the town. The Silver King Coalition mine is located in Woodside gulch about 1 mile southeast of Park City, at an altitude of about 8,100 ft. The other mines visited were the Daly West and Quincy, which are in Empire canyon about 2 miles sontheast of the town, at elevations of 8,300 to 8,500 ft. respectively. The Daly Judge tunnel goes into the mountain from Empire canyon about 1 mile south of the city, at an altitude of 7,700ft.

This report by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, presents several practical and inexpensive types of rock mechanics instrumentation for ground control around longwall panels. Application of these critical parameters, determined by this instrumentation, to the design and modification of rational longwall-mining systems is also discussed. In order to design or select an optimum mine structure or system, realistic and precise values of the design parameters must be determined in operating mines by measuring (1) existing ground stresses, (2) mining induced load transfer, and (3) strata movements as well as deformation moduli and rock strengths. Based on these parameters, rational and realistic criteria for mine design can be established by conducting case studies. It was found that several basic design parameters can be easily measured or determined in situ with simple, inexpensive, and practical instruments such as hydraulic borehole pressure cells, automatic recording convergence meters, automatic recording multiple-anchor-point extensometers, and hydraulic pressure recorders.

In endeavoring to put the art of the steelmaker on a more scientific basis, as a means of securing closer control of the product, we must be severely critical of the basis of any theory we use. In particular, we must be careful to distinguish between factors that are primary and those of only secondary impartance. The concentration relations that determine the slag-metal equilibria, which are usually more or less closely attained, are of course of primary significance, but a, dear picture of the whole process requires that the actual rates of the several reactions be taken properly into account. At the high temperature of the steelmaking furnace, all reactions might be thought to be very rapid, but some of them in fact are not; the essential causes of this condition are important to a proper understanding of the process. This paper aims to present, and to justify, the viewpoint that the most significant reaction is the oxidation of carhon in the metal, the progress of which determines the oxygen pressure levels in slag and metal and produces stirring effects, all of which influence the course of the process as a whole. Reaction Rates at Steelmaking Temperatures General experience in reaction rates makes it almost certain that at steelmaking temperatures equilibrium is attained practically instantaneously when the reactants are well distributed in a single liquid phase —that is, in the so-called homogeneous reactions. The actual slowness of some of the reactions in the open-hearth furnace must therefore be attributed to a relatively slow rate of diffusion within the slag or metal phase, which limits the rate at which the reactants can meet each other in the liquid steel or at its surface. That the reactions can be made to go with great rapidity, by proper mixing and stirring of the reacting phases, is indicated by the following illustrations: 1. In the Bessemer process there is intimate contact between air and the whole mass of metal, and the reactions are complete in a few minutes. 2. Perrinl has demonstrated that by pouring liquid steel into slag contained in a deep ladle, and thereby producing almost a slag-metal emulsion, the phosphorus or oxygen content of the steel is adjustcd immediately. 3. Barret, Holbrook and Wood2 observed a quite rapid rate of desulphurization when powdered calcium carbide was stirred vigorously into liquid iron. 4. When a spoonful of liquid steel is poured into a. mold containing aluminum wire, the formation and precipitation of alumina occurs in the fraction of a second required to freeze the surface layer of the tiny ingot. The first three examples all show that any means of increasing the effective surface between slag and metal and promoting intimate mixture of the reacting phases, thereby obviating the limitation imposed by diffusion, will enhance the speed of the steelmaking process.

The Bauschinger effect, or rounding of the corner of the stress-strain curve upon reloading, represents a temporary apparent softness that is more pronounced at large strains than small and for complete unloading than for partial unloading. Interrupted creep tests on copper exhibit a similar temporary softness (high creep rate) upon reloading. The fact that the strainwise dying-out time of these effects is the same in both tensile and creep tests shows that they are related. Thus, the term Bauschinger effect appears to embrace behavior following partial or complete unloading and reloading in addition to behavior following reversed loading. It is suggested that the term may properly apply also to certain creep behaviors following a small load decrement. INTERRUPTED tensile tests at low temperatures show1 a rounding of the corner of the stress-strain curve for reloading, which indicates a temporarily low deformation resistance. In the absence of recovery, the curve soon rises to the value that would have prevailed if the test had not been interrupted. The rounding of the reloading tensile curve has sometimes been referred to1 as the Bauschinger effect, although the term is more commonly applied to low deformation resistance in compression following tensile prestrain. The unusually broad usage of the term Bauschinger eflect in ref. 1 seems justified by the obvious interconnection of the various behaviors to which it has been applied.' In fact, the following discussion will indicate that still broader usage might be desirable. The Bauschinger effect is common at room temperature but apparently disappears at higher temperatures.2 Interrupted creep tests and tensile tests were made on certified OFHC copper (nongaseous impurities exclusive of silver were 0.004 pct), cold drawn 84 pct to ½ in. diam, and annealed at 600" (about 0.025 mm grains) or 850°C (about 0.2 mm grains). The tests were made in standard creep or tensile machines, using an O.S. Peters microformer-type extensometer or, for the small plastic strains, a special arrangement employing General Electric magnetic gage heads.' Interrupted creep tests at room temperature show3,4 an initial softness after reloading, manifested by an initial creep rate that is higher than that which would have prevailed if the test had not been interrupted. Fig. 1 shows some typical examples. This effect is apparently temporary (as is that in tensile tests): in four of the five tests shown, the log rate vs strain curve becomes parallel to an

The United States has never been a large coal exporting nation, and normally such shipments, aside from those to Canada, have been relatively small. Since the first railroad was built across the Allegheny Mountains, the imports have been quite small also, although fairly large tonnages of Canadian coal have moved into the extreme northeastern and northwestern states at times. In Table 21 are shown all data available about these shipments from 1790 to 1939, inclusive.

HE present paper has its origin in an attempt A by the author, extending over the last several years, to understand the influence of the magnetic properties of the constituent atoms upon the various properties of metals and alloys. During this study the author has been impressed by the important role which magnetism plays in the many facets of metallurgy. In writing this paper he has attempted to convey to his colleagues some concept as to the role magnetism will play in the future development of metallurgy. In some of the subjects herein discussed, such as the influence of magnetism upon phase boundaries and upon mechanical properties, only general thermodynamical properties associated with ferromagnetism are introduced. For these subjects, it is not anticipated that any serious differences of opinion will be encountered. A discussion of the other subjects requires the adoption of a quite specific model of the magnetic structure of the metal. This model is discussed under "Magnetic Shells and Their Interactions." The simple model adopted in this paper has been criticized' as being mathematically inconsistent. This criticism has been ably silenced by Dr. W. J. Carr' of this laboratory. The simple model adopted in this paper has been criticized as being inconsistent with observations on magnetic structure using neutron diffraction. This apparent discrepancy has been resolved by Bader3 who has shown that the finite velocity of neutrons prevents neutron beams from detecting the anti-ferromagnetic structure of the type predicted by the simple model adopted in this paper. Magnetic Shells and Their Interactions An electronic shell of an atom is specified by two symbols.' The first symbol is a number and denotes the total quantum number of the shell. The second symbol is a letter and denotes the orbital angular momentum of each electron within the shell. The letters s, p, d, f are used to denote an orbital angular momentum of 0, 1, 2, 3, respectively, in units of h/2a, where h is Planck's constant. As we pass from scandium to nickel in the first transition period, we eraduallv fill the 3d shell. This shell is responsible for ferromagnetism and hence may be called the magnetic shell. The component of the orbital angular momentum along some specified direction must be an integral multiple of h/2~. Thus, for a d electron this component can have any one of the values —2, —1, 0, 1, 2 times h/2a. In addition to its orbital angular momentum, each electron has an intrinsic angular momentum, hereafter called spin, due to a rotation about its own axis. This spin can have either of two components + Yz (h/2a) or — Yz (h/2~) along the specified direction. A fundamental principle of atomic structure, known as Pauli's exclusion principle, is that no two electrons in a given shell may have identical components of orbital angular momentum simultaneous with identical components of spin. The 3d shell thus may have at most ten electrons. Since an intrinsic angular momentum of a charged particle is necessarily associated with a magnetic moment, the spin of an electron may be thought of as referring to either this angular momentum or to the associated magnetic moment. The electron configuration of the ground state of the isolated atoms in the first transition row is reproduced in Table I. The superscript represents the number of electrons in each shell. For the purpose of this paper, the most important principle of atomic structure relates to the manner in which electrons are added to a shell as the atomic number is increased. This principle, commonly known as the principle of highest multiplicity or more simply as Hund's rule, states that within a given shell the maximum number of electrons have spins pointing in the same direction as is consistent with Pauli's exclusion principle. An application of this principle to the d shell is illustrated in Fig. 1, where the spin structure is given for shells containing from 1 to 10 electrons. The physical basis of Hund's rule is the exchange energy discussed first by Heisenberg in 1928. ABSTRACTED AND REVIEWED BY E. W. DAVIS,* MEMBER A.I.M.E. THE January-February number of the Journal of the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa is made up entirely of a discussion of Ball Wear in Cylindrical Mills. Following the principal paper by T. K. Prentice are several remarkably pertinent and carefully prepared discussions. Few persons in this country would be likely to see this publication, and since the information presented is new and of current interest, it seems desirable to abstract and review this publication for the benefit of the members of the A.I.M.E. The purpose of the investigation is stated in the first two paragraphs of Prentice's paper, as follows: Early in 1941, The Chamber of Mines Steel Products, Limited, initiated a series of tests under semi-working scale conditions to determine, if possible, those physical and chemical properties of a ball which make it resistant to wear when used in a cylindrical mill as a grinding medium, with the primary object of incorporating those beneficial qualities in the balls being produced at their works. This paper describes the tests carried out and discusses the results obtained. From these results it was possible to formulate a new theory relating to ball wear in cylindrical mills. This theory is presented in the second portion of this paper. PRACTICAL BALL-MILL TESTS IN A CYLINDRICAL MILL Part I of the paper begins with a discussion of the methods used for the manufacture of grinding balls in South Africa. The following paragraph is of particular interest. The cast steel ingots, 4 ¼ - in. square by 3 ft. 6 in. long, are re-heated in a gas-fired sloping stationary-hearth furnace and then rolled in a six-pass continuous mill into 2 5/8 in. round billets. Some of these billets are then removed and cut into suitable lengths for forging into 4 in., 3 ½ in., 3 in. or 2 ½ in. balls by means of three Drop and two Beché hammers, but the greater number, whilst still at about 1,000 ºC., pass directly into a set of scroll rolls which produce, in an ingenious manner, finished 3 in. balls direct from the 2 5/8 in. billets. Except in special cases, all balls are allowed to cool in the atmosphere and are not water quenched. Details of the Tests In order to enable the reader to evaluate properly the results and conclusions in the rest of the paper and in the discussions following the paper, most of the information presented by the author under this heading is quoted: ….. The testing unit was a nominal 30 in. diameter and 18 in. long centre discharge Denver Ball Mill. The ore pulp to the ball mill comprised a small portion of the normal feed to one of the fourteen City Deep 5 ft. 6 in. X 22 ft. tube mills, and the grinding media consisted of the balls under test plus other balls to give the desired load. The running time of the test-mill was divided into approximately equal periods of five days 13 ½ hours each. The usual procedure was to examine and make up the load

Senator Henry M. Jackson t D. Wash.) recently tossed a live grenade into the hardrock mining industry with proposed legislation to change provisions of the law governing Federally owned mineral values. Title Two of the measure would place hardrock mining agreements on a leasing basis similar to that which has applied to oil and gas since 1920. Known as the "Public Domain Lands Organic Act 01 1971" or S.921, the bill would monitor exploration by heavy machinery which ran destroy fragile ecology without any requirement for restoration or rehabilitation." Jackson said. Abandoned mining claims, lie continued, dot the public domain, "casting clouds upon the title to property which belongs to all the people.” and a minerals leasing system is "the most practical way of achieving the proper balance."

Experimental evidence is presented which confirnis the epitaxial relationship between the deposited silicon and the sapphire substrate. Four distinct modes of orientation relationships have been established. Both full-circle goniometer X-ray techniques and replica electron microscopy have indicated varying amounts of microtwinning in the silicon. film, which may he caused by the mode of silicon formation. Parameters have been found where twin density is less than I pct. The early stages of' epitaxy of silicon m sapphire have been examined by electron-microscope techniques... and mechanisms have been proposed. THE first report of the deposition of single-crystal silicon on sapphire (single-crystal aluminum oxide) was made at the American Physical Society Meeting in Canada' by one of us and was subsequently published in the Journal of Applied physics.* This paper summarizes some of the work carried on in this area since that time, in addition to reviewing some of our earlier observations. The initial single-crystal deposits of silicon on sapphire reported were obtained on sapphire planes produced by cutting a sapphire rod perpendicular to its fastest growth direction, which is approximately 60 deg from the C axis. Direct correlations between the microstructure and X-ray data as to the single crystallinity as shown in Fig. 1 are evident. These deposits were identified as (111) silicon on the substrate oriented near the (1123) of sapphire. (Sapphire notations are designated according to the c over a ratio of 2.73.) THIS is a day of surpluses, some good and some not so good. One can hardly pick up a newspaper, magazine, review or economic treatise without confronting the fact that we have or are threatened with more .of certain goods than we have use for, whether it be corn, wheat, cotton, coal or oil, -lumber, 'leather, newsprint, automobiles, zinc, lead, copper or what not. How did this unprecedented state of affairs arise? Who is to blame? How shall we avoid smothering ourselves in our own production? The voice of the farmer is raised in appeal to the Government to relieve him from the dilemma of his own fertility. In answer the Government employs thousands of experts and spends millions of dollars to aid the farmer. But to what end? To make him still more efficient so that he may produce even greater surpluses? Not satisfied with the result, it spends other millions to prepare vast areas of the arid land of the West for more farmers to cultivate and insure yet larger surpluses. Then what? The solvent extraction of chromium 111 has been studied for the system Cr 111, H,SO., H,O/RNH/RNH., xylene, where the primary amine used was Primene JMT. Rate studies have shown that extremely long equilibrium times are required, ranging from 1 hr at 80°C to 20 days at room temperature. Heating the solution prior to extraction increases the rate of extraction. The variation in the amount of Cr 111 extracted is an inverse function of the acidity of the aqueous phase. Thus, the slow rates of extraction appear to be connected with the hydrolysis of the Cr I11 species. Extraction isotherms for the extraction of Cr 111 have been obtained for two sets of experimental conditions, namely at 60°C and for a heat-treated solution cooled to room temperature. The separation of Fe 111 from Cr 111 and Cr 111 from Cu 11 in sulfate solution by extraction with Primene JMT has been studied and shown to be feasible. A survey of the literature relating to the solvent extraction of chromium showed that, although many systems exist for extraction of Cr VI, only a very few reagents have been found to extract Cr 111. The extraction of Cr III by di-(2-ethyl hexyl) phosphoric acid has been reported by Kimura.' A straight-line dependence of slope —2 was observed between log D,, and the log mineral acid concentration at constant extractant concentration. Since the slope of this plot reflects the charge on the ion extracted, it must be concluded that a hydrolyzed species of Cr III is being extracted. Carboxylic acids generally do not form extractable complexes with Cr III but di-isopropyl salicylic acie does extract Cr 111. Simple acid backwashing of the organic phase, however, failed to remove the chromium. Similar difficulty in backwashing was found by Hellwege and Schweitzer8 in the extraction of Cr I11 with acetyl-acetone in chloroform. The extraction of Cr 111 from chloride solutions by alkyl amines has been reported4-' but the maximum amount of extraction achieved in these studies did not exceed 10%: From sulfate solutions, however, Ishimori" has shown that appreciable amounts of Cr I11 were extracted by amines. The amines used were tri-iso-octyl amine, Amberlite LA-1 (a secondary amine, Rohm & Haas) and Primene JMT (primary amine, Rohm & Haas). The efficiency of extraction with regard to amine type was primary>secondary> tertiary. Appreciable extraction of Cr I11 was recorded for Primene JMT as the aqueous phase acidity tended to zero. The major difficulty with Cr I11 in solvent extraction systems stems from the nonlabile nature of the ion in complex formation. This accounts for the slow rate of extraction generally experienced and the difficulty encountered in backwashing the Cr I11 from the organic phase in the case of liquid cation exchangers. Consequently, the possibility of extraction of Cr I11 as a complex anion is attractive since the backwashing problems should be minimized in this way. From published data, it appeared that the extraction of chromium from sulfate solutions of low acidity by primary amines afforded the best chance of success for a useful solvent extraction system for Cr iii This paper presents the results of a study of the extraction of Cr I11 from sulfate solution by Primene JMT and examines the application of such an extraction procedure for the recovery of chromium from liquors containing iron and copper. Experimental Chromium solutions were prepared from chrome alum in sulfuric acid and sodium sulfate so as to maintain a constant concentration of sulfate ion of 1.5 molar. Solutions of Primene JMT were prepared in xylene and the amine equilibrated with sulfuric acid/sodium sul-fate solutions, of the same acidity as the chromium solution, until there was no change in acidity between the initial and final aqueous phases. The solutions of Primene JMT conditioned in this way were then used for the equilibration experiments. Equilibrations at 25°C were carried out in stoppered conical flasks shaken in a thermostat; equilibrations at all other temperatures were carried out in stirred flasks in a thermostat. After equilibration, the phases were separated and analyzed for chromium. In the tests on the rate of extraction, small samples of equal volume of both phases were withdrawn from time to time and the chromium distribution determined. The chromium analyses were carried out either coloi-imetrically using diphenyl carbazide, or volu-metrically using addition of excess standard ferrous ammonium sulfate and back titration of the excess iron with potassium dichromate. The oxidation of Cr 111 to Cr VI in the case of the raffinate solution was effected by boiling with potassium persulfate in the presence of silver nitrate and, for the backwash solution, by boiling with sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide. Results Preliminary experiments indicated that extraction results were effected by the age of the chromium solution, higher distribution coefficients being obtained with solutions which had been allowed to stand for some time. Undoubtedly other members have given their lives in the Service of the United States and the Allies during the past four years, but the following biographical notices are all that have reached us as yet. Lewis Newton Bailey Lewis Newton Bailey died of pneumonia at Camp Merritt, N. J., Apr. 30, 1918, at the age of 34 years. He was Master Engineer, Senior Grade, in the Fourth Regiment, U. S. Engineers, and although he was offered a commission as First Lieutenant shortly after enlisting, he preferred not to accept it until he had reached France. By those who knew him well, this lack of eagerness for promotion will be recognized as consistent with his whole character. Mr. Bailey was born at San Diego, Cal., May 28,1884, and graduated from the University of California, College of Mines, in 1906. He joined the American Institute of Mining Engineers in 1916. During 1904 he was employed at the cyanide plant of the Buckeye mines, Forest Hills, Cal. In the autumn of 1909 he went to the Coeur d'Alene District, Idaho, and was first employed on construction work of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co'., with a short intermission at the Hercules mill, after which. he was sampler and assayer for the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co. until May, 1910, when he was obliged to return to California to attend to family interests. Returning to the Coeur d'Alene district in November, 1911, he was given charge of remodelling and operating the mill of the Coeur d'Alene Development Co., treating the output of the Ontario mine; this work he performed with credit and complete success. In December, 1914, he returned to the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co., as assistant metallurgist and mill superintendent, his work consisting mainly in the testing and improvement of concentrator practice, which he continued with great credit until August, 1915, when family considerations required that he again return to the home of his parents at San Diego. Mr. Bailey was characterized by energy, both physical and mental, by devotion to his friends, associates and employer. He was particularly successful in his relations with the men under him and, in fact, was thoroughly well likcd by everybody with whom he came in contact.

With a mine output as high as 5000 tpd and mill capacity of 7000 tpd, the uranium mining and milling complex owned and operated by Kerr-McGee Nuclear Corp. in the Ambrosia Lake area is the largest in the U.S. and is likely to remain so for some time. Next year, Kerr- McGee expects to have in production another mine in Section 19 of the Ambrosia area-and will begin ore production in 1976 at its new $15-million mine at Church Rock, located northeast of Gallup, N. M., where the company has already completed the shaft work and is in the early stages of project development. Ore from Church Rock will be transported to the company's facilities at Ambrosia Lake for processing. Kerr-McGee's existing eight mines in Ambrosia Lake go to depths of about 800 to 1500 ft to tap the various horizons of uranium-bearing sands in the Westwater Canyon of the Morrison formation.

We will reply to Dr. Pitsch's discussion by 1) presenting in greater detail the single surface trace analysis which we performed on the reversed austenite plates in a single parent plate of martensite of known orientation, 2) relating the results of our analysis to the conclusions which Dr. Pitsch makes on the basis of our data, and 3) examining the validity of our selection of twenty-nine individual traces from the over 200 austenite plates which were observed in a surface of this single martensite plate. Fig. 7 shows a standard (001) projection of the martensite plate from which the austenite-martensite interface traces were taken. The traces are plotted on the projection as the small solid circles, and the great circles corresponding to the loci of plane normals which could contain each trace or could intersect the surface plane along the measured directions are also plotted. It can be seen that these great circles intersect at a point which corresponds to the normal of the surface plane on which the traces were observed. Also rate which occurred only at particularly low heating rates, see Figs. 1 and 3 in the paper.2 Since in this case the interpretation of Jana and Wayman is plausible and since we have no alternative to this interpretation, we would like to state only that the existence of a diffusion-controlled reversal at low temperatures seems to be not yet proved beyond any doubt. HAVING been associated with the operation of the de Vooys process for coal, which has treated 13,000,000 tons per annum, and recognizing the process as of value in ore sorting, Huntington, Heberlein and Co. Ltd. (Great Britain) in 1936 made an examination of all other existing methods. In none of the pioneer applications had recognition been given to the necessity for maintaining certain conditions that are essential for sorting certain ores if a truly efficient separation by gravity alone is to be assured. Consequently, in 1936-1937 Huntington, Heberlein and Co. Ltd., with Pearson, employing certain ideas connected with the de Vooys application, commenced the development of a separator that would allow conformance with optimum conditions in the zone where separation is effected. Later, Holt and Wade added to the value of the original application by Wuensch, Rakowsky and others, whose conceptions are being successfully operated today. Meantime, Trostler had enhanced the value of the original H-H. process by improvements that are now embodied in operating plants, and today the process incorporates an improved apparatus and a stable medium that produce the optimum conditions for separation. These conditions are: 1. Elimination of disturbing currents in the separating zone; 2. Reduction to a minimum of medium-density differences throughout. the separating zone; 3. Stable medium of minimum viscosity to permit the unretarded fall of mineralized particles; 4. Removal of products of separation with minimum disturbance to the separating zone. DESIGN OF SEPARATOR The H-H. sink-and-float separator consists of a pyramidal tank in which the separation actually takes place, connected at the bottom with an inclined bucket elevator. The tank and the elevator are filled with medium to within a few inches of the top of the tank. Medium is fed into the separator at a variety of points, according to the type of ore being treated, and it is withdrawn from the separator at two points: (1) together with the float product, by means of a variable-speed paddle, at the surface of the medium, and (2) by flowing over an adjustable weir cut in the side of the elevator casing. The prepared ore is fed onto the surface of the medium. The intermediate paddles, which revolve at a slow speed of 2 to 5 r.p.m., move the floating ore across the bath from feed end to float-discharge end. The ore, which is heavier than the medium, sinks below the sweep of the paddles and reaches the boot of the bucket elevator, which discharges it without disturbance of the separating zone. These arrangements for withdrawing medium from the separator allow the use of minimum flows, which connote minimum

The outstanding developments of the year in southwestern Pennsylvania were the establishment of the Summit Fayette County gas pool and the gas pool in Nicholson township, Fayette County, and Monongahela township, Greene County, as major producing areas, and the indication of four new shallow gas pools. Curtailment of drilling for shallow gas is expected to follow order M68 of the Office of Production Management. Gas completions were approximately 70 per cent higher, oil completions nearly 25 per cent lower, dry holes were unchanged and drilling wells as of Dec. 31, 1941, nearly loo per cent higher than last year. Shallow Development Oil.—Outside Butler County, only 11 producers were drilled, with a total initial of 221 bbl. The best of these was in a portion of Gilmore township, Greene County, which ordinarily produces gas. This well flowed 77 bbl. in 11 hr., along with about one million cubic feet of gas from the Fourth (U.Dev.) sand. Washington County had a 10.20 and a 25-bbl. well in Morris township and a 20-bbl. well in South Franklin township. These were all in the Fifth Sand. The price of oil to Jan. 27 was $1.80 per barrel, when a 15¢ increase was made. This was followed by a raise of 20¢ on Apr. 23, 15¢ on May 21, 20¢ on June 18 and 25¢ on Aug. 14. The last increase was canceled on Aug. 23 by the Office of Price Administration, which pegged southwestern Pennsylvania crude at $2.40 per barrel. Gas.—An almost doubled initial production of natural gas is the result of the large increase in number of wells drilled. The outstanding discovery of the year was in the vicinity of Armbrust, Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, where a well drilled to what at first was considered the Bayard sand, but what is now known to be the Fifth (U.Dev.) sand, at 2100 ft. found nearly 5 million cu. ft. of gas. Since this completion 14 wells have been finished, only one of which was dry, giving a combined total open flow of approximately 15 million cu. ft. The sand is 35 to 40 ft. thick and the saturation extends through most of that thickness. Rock pressure, which is 1040 lb. per sq. in., is abnormally high. An area of only about one square mile has been proven but some of the 24 new wells drilling as of Dec. 31 will no doubt extend it considerably. This development has taken place in an area heretofore considered to have had little prospect. There were three good wells in other parts of Westmoreland County. One well in Franklin township, which had 12 million cu. ft, of gas in the Fifth sand, was entirely surrounded by dry holes but is still pro- . ducing at a high rate. In Bell township a 1.6 million cu. ft. well was found in the Speechley (U.Dev.) sand and in Washington township the same sand produced 2.7 million cu. ft. with shut-in pressure of 970 Ib. at 2820 ft. This well is offset by two dry holes and one well with a capacity of only 10 M cubic feet.
