S. J. SINDEBAND*—(1) Discussing the properties of the powders used, Mr. Rostoker mentioned a silicon powder as being between 150 and 325 mesh. We always had much difficulty in measuring particle size of silicon powder by screen analysis, because of its tendency to agglomerate. I would be interested in the method used to measure these particle sizes. (2) Mr. Rostoker maintains that the measurement of magnetic properties is more accurate in determining complete homogenization of an alloy, than is the X ray diffraction technique. I wonder whether this is really true. Even when diffusion is complete, magnetic properties will change during continuation of the heat treatment, due to change in density and pore shapes, as has been demonstrated by Mr. Rostoker himself. Which effect is faster, the diffusion of the alloy components or the attainment of final density, will, in my opinion, depend very much on initial material and sintering conditions used. For magnetic applications, of course, the magnetic measurements are most suited for determining the point at which equilibrium conditions are reached. (3) I was glad to see that Mr. Rostoker had used sample sizes which are similar to those I had used previously, and I believe that ring samples of about 2 in. od will become more or less standard samples for the determination of magnetic properties of powder metallurgy products. I should like to ask how the density was changed for the samples on which the effect of porosity was investi- gated, and, further, why the sintering temperature used for this series of experiments was so low. It is somewhat surprising that a 24-hr treatment at 850°C acts so much more to spheroidize the pores than a treatment for 1 hr at 1100°C. But the effect seems to be indisputable. I have made an investigation of the influence of sintering temperature for longer times on the maximum permeabilities of iron powder compacts which was presented at the International Powder Metallurgy Conference in Graz, in 1948, and I hope that these results will be published here within a short time. The results of this investigation are confirmed by Mr. Rostoker's findings that the change of time from 1 to 24 hr changes the permeability behavior considerably in the direction as indicated by Polder and Van Santen for spheroidiza-tion of pores. THE PROPERTY AND LOCATION THE Ray Consolidated Copper Co.'s mining property is located on Mineral Creek 6 miles north of Kelvin, at Ray, Pinal County, Ariz. (Fig.. 1) . The mining claims now owned by the company consist of 126 lode claims, comprising 2,144.9 acres, containing at the beginning of operations 82,904,368 tons of 2.19 per cent. copper ore. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE OREBODY The main orebody is a disseminated deposit in schist and porphyry formed by secondary enrichment. Its existence was proved by churn drilling, and it is at present one of the largest proved copper deposits in the world. The orebody itself covers .205 acres with an average thickness of 121 ft., and occupies a definite belt which has a northwest direction. Its length is approximately 5,000 ft. The width varies, being about 2,000 ft. at the west end and 2,500 ft. at the east, narrowing down irregularly front both ends to a few feet in the center. The thickness of the body varies greatly along the line of lode, ranging from a few feet up to 470 ft. thick. The ore horizon is not constant, but varies, following in a broad sense the topography The body in general dips slightly to the northeast, and is broken up by numerous small faults and fractures. The ore-bearing formations, consisting of mineralized schist and mineralized granite porphyry, stand fairly well and offer no difficulty in mining operations.

To comply with the California Mine Safety Orders pertaining to transportation of mine workers over mine railroads, the management of the New Idria mine in San Benito County, Calif., designed special man-cars. The new regulations, dated October 1958, make it mandatory for mine man-cars to be designed for carrying five or more men to and from the mine workings. At the New Idria mine, largest single producer of mercury in the U.S., each shift normally employs about 70 men. However, with the possibility of a future increase in the work force, seven man-cars were constructed with a total carrying capacity of 84 men. The general design of the mine man-cars was dictated by safety regulations plus the physical characteristics of the mine-low headroom, limited side clearance in haulageways, and track irregularities due to ground swells. The cars measure 10 ft long, 44 in. wide, and 50 in. high and were built at an average cost of $450 per car. All assembly work was done at the mine site.

Within the last ten years Kentucky has become celebrated for its low-sulfur bituminous coals. Prior to this time, many investigators had discnvered the abundance of this coal but the fact was unknown to the general public until the last extension of Kentucky's mountain railroads' was completed. The coals of. Kentucky are, broadly, separated into two geographic units—the eastern and the western coal fields. On a basis of their sulfur content these coal fields fall into three units, which are indicated on the accompanying map, by numbers, 1, 2, and 3. The area marked 1, the very southeastern part of the state, shows the lowest sulfur, all coals being averaged. In this field the maximum is 1.04 per cent. and the minimum as low as 0.68 per cent.—both averages and not individual analyses, which would of course show much greater variation. Included in this group are the following counties: Lawrence, 0.87 per cent.; Martin, 0.75 per cent.; Johnson, 0.73 per cent.; Magoffin, 0.87 per cent.; Floyd, 0.88 per cent.; Pike, 0.68 per cent.; Knott, 1.04 per cent.; Perry, 0.77 per cent.; Letcher, 0.80 per cent.; Leslie, 0.70 per cent.; Harlan, 0.79 per cent.; Knox, 0.86 per cent.; and Bell, 0.92 per cent. The total average sulfur content for these thirteen counties is 0.82 per cent. Bordering the restricted low-sulfur field of eastern Kentucky is the No. 2 belt (slightly darker), 'which is commonly known as the western border of the eastern coal field. Here the maximum sulfur is 2.91 per cent. and the minimum 1.05 per cent. Again these are averages and not individual analyses. The counties in this group are: Greenup, 2.60 per • cent.; Boyd, 1.67 per cent.; Carter, 1.07 per cent.; Morgan, 1.40 per cent.; Wolfe, 1.83 per cent.; Lee, 2.93 per cent.; Breathitt, 1.85 per cent.; Owsley, 1.09 per cent.; Jackson, 1.06 per cent.; Rockcastle, 2.30 per cent.; Clay, 1.09 per cent.; Laurel, 1.08 per cent.; Pulaski, 2.24 per cent.; Whitley, 1.05 per cent.; McCreary, 1.50 per cent.; and Wayne. The sulfur percentage average for this area including fifteen important counties is 1.65 per cent. In the western Kentucky field, the great increase in the percentage of sulfur is at once apparent. Ohio County with 3.78 per cent. is the highest and Hancock with 2.87 per cent. is the lowest. Boyer, Morgan and Muskat,' with improvements by Morgan, McDowell, and Doty,l and Laird and Putnam,' have described a scheme for the determination of fluid saturatic in porous media by measuring the x-ray linear absorbing power of particular fluids in the media. This method is one of several which depend on the linear absorbing power of the fluids in the porous medium. Other examples of linear absorption methods involve measurement of dielectric constant, gamma ray absorption, and ultrasonic attenuation. It is the purpose of this note to demonstrate by theortical considerations that the absorption versus saturation curve for a linear absorption method is not necessarily a single valued function of the saturation. Such non-unique behavior must be considered and evaluated before suitable saturation determinations can be made by a linear absorption method. To illustrate the discussion, examples will be given only for the simplest cases of combinations of two different dielectrics. The dielectric constant method was chosen for illustration because it was thought to demonstrate most graphically the point in question. According to Argue and Maass,4 the resultant dielectric constant of a combination of two different dielectrics depends on the orientation of the dielectrics in the electric field of the test condenser used to measure the dielectric constant. One ease involves alternate slabs of dielectrics E1 and E2 perpendicular to the electric field of the test condenser, as shown in Fig. 1A. For this case: l/'E, = A/E, + B/E,.......(1) where E,,, is the dielectric constant of the combination, A is the ratio of the path length through dielectric E, to the distance between the plates of the condenser (assuming the dielectrics have the same cross sectional area as the condenser), and B is the ratio of the path length through dielectric E2 to the distance between the plates of the condenser. It will be noted that the constants A and B are numerically equal to the fractional "saturation" of the region between the test plates of the condenser by the two dielectrics E1 and E2, respectively. Another case involves alternate columns of the two dielectrics parallel to the electric field and forming a continuous path between the condenser plates, as shown in Fig. 1B. For this case: E., = AE1 + BE2.........(2) where E., is the dielectric constant of the combination, A is the ratio of the cross sectional area of dielectric E, to the cross sectional area of the condenser plates (assuming the lengths of the dielectrics equal the distance between the condenser plates) and B is the ratio of the cross sectional area of dielectric E2 to the cross sectional area of the condenser plates. As before the constants A and B are the effective "saturation" of the condenser by the two dielectrics. Still another case is described by Lichtenecker5 where dielectric E2 is shown in the form of small particles distributed at random in dielectric E1. This is shown in Fig. 1C. For this case: log Em = A log E1 + B log E2.....(3) where Em is the dielectric constant of the combination. A is the ratio of the volume of dielectric E1 to the volume of the condenser, i.e., the effective "saturation" of the condenser by dielectric E,. B is the ratio of the volume of dielectric E2 to the volume of the condenser, i.e., "saturation" of dielectric El. Equations (l), (2) and (3) are plotted in Fig. 2 for E1 = 2.5 (oil) and E2 = 80 (water). At the Director's dinner of the A.I.M.E. on. April 22, Mr. Sengier of the Union Minière du Haut Katanga was a guest. Though a member of the Institute for sev-eral years this was the first occasion on which he had had opportunity to meet with it, and in response to an invitation from President DeGolyer, after expressing his pleasure at being present, he told informally of the present development of the Congo with which he has been so closely related. From his remarks the follow-ing has been prepared.-EDITOR. AS you know, the Belgian Congo, a fairly large colony compared with the territory of Belgium, is in the center of Africa. Natural waterways, railroads now built and new railroads under construc-tion, give increasing means of transportation and are helping toward development. The mining industry is by far the most important part of our colonial activity. Considering that we are all engineers, I will confine my figures to mining enterprise. First I will show you the relative importance of the mining industry com-pared with the total exports of the Belgian Congo. During 1925 there was exported 100,000 tons of cop-per, valued at about $25,000,000; 900,000 carats of diamonds, 8000 lb. of gold, 1700 tons of cassiterite, 300 .tons of cobalt, and 20 grams of radium, of a total value of about $35,000,000. Other products to a value of about $12,000,000 and consisting mainly of palm nuts, palm oil, cotton, ivory, copal, rubber, were also exported. From this you will see that mineral products account for about 72 per cent of the total exported value. Copper alone amounts to 52 per cent of the total and 72 per cent of the mineral exports. All minerals, with the exception of gold, which is mined by the government, belong practically toy two mining companies in which American and British capi-tal is interested with Belgian. These two companies (one called Forminière, interested in the diamond busi-ness, and the other called the Union Minière, interested in copper, cobalt, tin and radium) were formed twenty-five years ago. They started producing in 1911, but the war prevented normal operations, and active de-velopment could only be carried on after the Armistice.

The martensite reaction in single crystals and polycrystals of 70 pct Fe-30 pct Ni alloys is shown to be autocatalytic in nature, producing bursts of transformation during cooling. The temperature of the first burst of transformation, called Mb, occurs below M, in these alloys. Experiments were devised to test the athermal embryo and strain embryo theories of martensite nucleation. The results indicate that internal strains, either within the virgin austenite or around existing martensitic plates, control the nucleation process in these alloys. Furthermore, the growth of martensitic plates is not limited by the attainment of an elastic balance with the austenitic matrix, but by the occurrence of plastic deformation at the martensite boundaries which interferes with the propagation mechanism. IN an investigation of the martensitic habit in single crystals of a 69 pct Fe-31 pct Ni alloy,' it was observed that about 25 pct of the austenite transformed during subatmospheric cooling within the time-interval of an audible click. This event proved quite spectacular: The shock wave sent out from the specimen freely suspended on a thread in the refrigerating liquid was occasionally sufficiently intense to shatter the Dewar container and to separate the toluene column in the immersed thermometer. The Present investigation was undertaken to determine- the kinetics and mechanism of this "burst" type of martensitic reaction. The analyses of the alloys studied are given in Table I. The composition of the single crystal specimens is designated by alloy A, while the polycrystal-line specimens were made of alloys B and C as noted in the text. The single crystals were prepared in a vacuum furnace, using a modified Bridgman technique. Most of these crystals were homogenized by holding for 24 hr at about 1300°C just after solidification. However, it may be emphasized here that the degree of homogenization was not a controlling factor in the subsequent experiments, inasmuch as specimens having different degrees of homogenization yielded the same results. All of the single crystals were fully austenitic as slowly cooled to room temperature. An illustration of the burst phenomenon is given in Fig. 1, which shows oscillograms of electrical resistivity and temperature vs. time during the continuous quenching of 1/16 in. wire specimens (alloy B) in a dry ice and acetone bath at —77°C. There are at least two observable bursts in this case, as indicated by the sharp decreases of resistance accompanying the sudden formation of substantial quantities of martensite. The thermal arrest during the quench probably corresponds to the larger burst. Usually the bursts are followed by more or less progressive transformation during continuous cooling. It will also be noted that the resistance continues to decrease after the specimen has reached the bath temperature. This isothermal change denotes the formation of martensite at constant temperature, and will be the subject of another paper. Examination of fiducial scratches on the surface of a transformed single crystal has shown2 that the scratches in adjoining nonparallel martensitic plates are usually bent in opposite directions, as though one plate forms in such a way as to relieve the matrix stresses set up by the adjacent plate. This, together with some of the results described in ref. 1, Table I. The following series of experiments were performed in order to test this idea. Cooperative Nature of the Burst Two adjacent disks, Va in. thick x % in. diam, were cut from a single austenite crystal of alloy A using a jeweler's saw. One of the disks was then cut into 15 parts. Then 12 of the latter pieces and the second disk were austenitized (stress relieved) at 600°C for 30 min and water quenched to room temperature. In the past, other authors.1, 2 have studied the influence of a skin effect on the productivity of a well. This skin effect, expressed by the skin factor S, is considered to be caused by a thin layer of impaired permeability immediately around the wellbore and extending vertically over the whole productive interval penetrated by the well. The skin factor S is defined as follows. Based on this, the impairment in productivity caused by a skin can be expressed by the fractional loss in productivity I, which is the loss in productivity divided by the total unimpaired productivity. For compressible flow in a stabilized well which drains a circular area of radius re, 1 is given by The present paper deals with a different kind of productivity impairment. Consider a well in which part of the productive formation is blocked off completely, either by incomplete penetration or by exclusion of parts of the productive zone by blank casing. In Fig. 1 (A, B and C), three examples are shown. Fig. 1(A) shows the situation where a well only partially penetrates the formation. This often is done to combat the actual or imagined danger of bottom-water coning. Fig. 1(B) shows a well producing from only the central portion of a productive interval. This type of completion is sometimes used where both water and gas coning are a problem. Although the case of a well producing through perforated casing cannot be treated in a manner similar to the previous two cases (where radial flow in the horizontal plane is assumed), Fig. 1(C) shows several intervals open to production and qualitatively describes this case (as will be discussed later). To study the loss in productivity in all these cases, two parameters are introduced which fully determine the impairment. The first is the penetration ratio "b," i.e., the total interval open to fluid entry divided by the total thickness of the productive zone. The second is the ratio hlrw. In this ratio, rw is the wellbore radius. The definition of h is more cumbersome. In Fig. 1(A), h is the thickness of the total productive interval. The streamline configuration for this case of partial penetration is basic to the other two cases considered (Views B and C of Fig. 1). It will be obvious from Fig. i (A) that the flow lines in the uppermost portion of the formation will be essentially horizontal, while those in the lower portion will curve upward toward the well. In Fig. 1(B), with only the middle portion of the zone open to production, the streamline configuration. of the upper half will be an exact mirror image of that in the lower half of the zone. Hence, for the case illustrated in Fig. 1(B), h is defined as one-half the total sand thickness. It follows, then, that in Fig. 1(C) h is one-half the distance between corresponding points in adjacent intervals. (In gun-perforated casing, h would be one-half the distance between perforations.) In a paper by Nisle4 and a paper given by the present authors5, the mathematical theory was developed for the cases under consideration. In the present publication, the emphasis is put on the results of these studies; consequently, the equations derived in Refs. 4 and 5 will be omitted, for the most part. The pressure drop p in a well producing from only a portion of the total formation thickness can, in analogy with Eq. 1, be expressed by Numerical solution of Eq. 5 by use of the IBM 650 leads to the following important conclusions. Fume nucleation sufficiently close to vaporizing suvfaces can augment net vaporization rates into cooler environments. Environmental conditions favoring large vaporization rate enhancements are briefly discussed and a previous theoretical treatment of this nucleation phenomenon is generalized to account for the self-regulating effect of condensalion-heat release within the boundary layer. Despite kinetic limitations on homogeneous nucleation, and latent heat release, non-diffusive condensate removal processes appear to make possible large enhancements in steady-state vaporization rates, provided surface temperatures are well below the boiling point. When condensed phases vaporize (or dissolve) into cooler media, the diffusion-limited mass loss rate can be strongly influenced by the process of nucleation/con-densation (or precipitation) within the thermal boundary layer. This condensation process (which typically leads to mists or fumes in the case of evaporation into cooler gases) has the effect of steepening the vapor pressure profiles near the evaporating surface, since the condensation zone acts as a vapor sink. However. the resulting enhancement in the diffusion-limited evaporation rate can be estimated (as first done by Turkdogan1 for the case of molten iron/nickel alloys evaporating into helium) only if one has independent knowledge of the critical supersaturation, sCrit(T), required to homogeneously nucleate the vapor.* In a recent reformulation and generalization of the theoretical model of Ref. 1 it has been shown that, when log sCrit is approximately linear in reciprocal temperature, rather simple expressions can be derived4 for the ratio of the actual rate of vaporization j" to either the minimum (no condensation) rate j"min, or the maximum (equilibrium condensation) rate j"max In the present communication we wish to briefly report on further developments and implications of the formulation of Ref. 4, with emphasis on i) environmental conditions favoring large enhancements in vaporization rate, and ii) the self-regulatory influence of condensation heat release (neglected in Refs. 1 to 4) on predicted vaporization rates. Additionally, we take this opportunity to correct several misprints appear- ing in Ref. 4, and comment on Elenbaas's recent criticism5 of Ref. 1. MAXIMUM POSSIBLE VAPORIZATION RATE IN PRESENCE OF CONDENSATION A nonequilibrium theory is of interest because of the very large difference between the minimum (no condensation) and maximum (equilibrium condensation) vaporization rate. The magnitude of this maximum possible enhancement can be shown quite clearly by combining a result of Refs. 3 and 4 with the fact that for most liquids there is a simple relationship between the molar heat of evaporation, A, and its boiling point, i.e., A/(RTBp) = C, where the constant C, often called the Trouton ratio, takes on values not very different from 11.* More generally, for any substance (including The Trouton ratio (which for water is 13, for methane, 10, and so forth) will be recognized as the ratio of the molar entropy change upon vaporization (at TBP or Ttransf) to the unlversal gas constant R. Its near constancy reflects the fact that the change in atomic order upon vaporization depends only weakly on the kinds of molecules involved. those that sublime under ordinary conditions) we can define a characteristic transformation temperature. Ttransf, by a relation of the form Ttransf =A/(CR), and then examine the maximum possible evaporation rates as a function of how far removed from Ttransf are the surface temperature, Tw, and ambient temperature, T. CONSTRUCTION of a ground-water supply includes many operations, which do not end with completion of facilities. Evaluations must be made of the quality of water in various areas and the history of production. Following an analysis of geologic, hydrologic, and chemical data there must be an exploratory drilling program and a study of resulting information. When the well is completed a continuous survey of operating records and basic data is necessary, since designs for future wells are varied as more data becomes available for those already completed. As the following discussion must be limited to a single undertaking, the customary procedure will be outlined for development and construction of a ground-water supply in which more than three wells are involved. Parts of this procedure are applicable for all ground-water supplies. Three possible sites were selected for construction of a paper mill. The problem was that the industry daily required approximately 15 million gallons of water of the best quality available; however, if water of the best quality were not available in the desired amount, water of a poorer quality could be used up to half the required amount, about 7 million gallons. In the preliminary survey approximately 1500 to 2000 square miles were covered for each site. Collected data consisted of several hundred electric logs of oil and gas wells; reports by the U. S. Geological Survey on ground-water resources of localities in and near the area; unpublished records of several hundred water wells including chemical analyses of the water produced and drillers' logs of the wells; records of periodic water-level measurements made in observation wells by the USGS; topographic maps drawn up by USGS and by army engineers; and highway and county road maps. A preliminary report based on study and evaluation of these data was presented to the client, recommending the site with the most favorable and economical ground-water conditions. The study indicated that water of the quality and quantity desired could be developed. In this particular area there were indications that the aquifer could be separated into two zones con- taining water of different chemical character. This chemical character varied somewhat with area, but principally with depth, a factor which later proved an economic advantage in design of the well field. After studying the preliminary report, the client weighed other economic factors as well as ground-water advantages and selected a plant site. Authority was given to proceed with detailed study of the chosen area. Evaluation of preliminary data concerning the area indicated that it should be supplemented with additional information derived from actual exploratory drilling and testing. A flexible plan of exploratory drilling was devised so that data obtained as each test hole was drilled could be correlated with existing data and additional test holes could be located and drilled accordingly. Specific data to be obtained from each test hole were: samples of all formations penetrated; the driller's descriptive log of formations; electric logging surveys; one or more samples of water from selected water-bearing formations; temperature; and water levels and their recovery after periods of production. The area studied in such detail was approximately 400 square miles. Choice of location for the original test holes was based on the preliminary study. The pattern for these test holes was designed to require a minimum number of holes and to allow for interpolation of data between two, three, and four holes. Geologic, hydrologic, and chemical data gathered after completion of the first four test holes showed that the north section was the most desirable in the area, which was then reduced from the original 400 square miles to about 150 square miles for more detailed and intensive study. On the basis of findings from the current test a tentative well field was laid out and a drilling program devised. One test hole was located on the actual plant site and later developed into a small pilot production well equipped with a deep well turbine pump. Water from this well was used for general construction requirements. Another test hole drilled near the pilot production well and adjacent to the proposed route of the well-collection system was used during the pumping test of the pilot production well to determine the degree of interference. From the data thus obtained, calculations were made to determine the coefficients of transmissibility and storage. Three additional holes

GEORGE F. COMSTOCK (author's reply to discussion*).-Mr. Thum's description of the effects of butt welding and spot welding on the micro-structure of steel are interesting and timely. The speed with which the changes noted by Mr. Thum must take place is indeed remarkable, but the writer has noted a similar very rapid diffusion of carbide in annealing a t a rather high temperature certain samples of soft sheet steel containing massive cementite segregated on a small scale. The massive cementite in such steel can be dissolved and distributed very quickly if the proper temperature is attained. Mr. Thum's explanation of the structure he found in the spot welds seems entirely reasonable, but the mystery of the decarburized material in the butt weld is one that might well be the subject of further research. The possibility of decarburization by air ,might perhaps be worthy of a little more consideration than he gives it, for the oxides formed would be gaseous on account of the presence of carbon, and hence not visible in the microscope, and the effect of the pressure might be to squeeze the carbon oxides, which would normally form blow-holes, out of the metal or possibly into such small volumes as not to be noticed The removal of carbon by liquation and squeezing into the fin would be an effect similar to the "bleeding" of a steel ingot that is rolled while the center is still liquid, giving a soft low-carbon interior in the finished section while the segregate was removed in cropping the pipe. This effect in Mr. Thum's butt welds could, however, only be obtained if the weld was heated to near the melting point of the steel, and if the carbon was considerably segregated in the bars at the start, for the first effect of the high temperature would be to promote diffusion rather than the contrary segregation and Equation. It is gratifying to learn from Dr. Ruder's remarks that his researches have resulted in no disagreement with the few points brought out by the writer's experiments. In addition to the three forms in which nitrogen may occur in iron that he mentions, it would seem that a fourth form is often found; This is apparently a eutectoid, like pearlite, and sometimes almost as coarse as the massive cementite seen in soft steel sheets that have been annealed for a long time. One of the things needed in the metallographic study of steel is an etching reagent that will distinguish definitely between nitride in this form and the more common pearlite or cementite.

The high-temperature Strength oF TD nickel has been observed to be dependent upon the previons thermal and mechanical history of the material. Variations in both the level and the anisotropy of strength have been observed. 01 this paper- these variations are correlated with the storing of annealing resistant elastic strain energy in the matrix of the TD nickel. An x-vay line -broadening tecknique is used to measure the maLrTis elastie strain. THE inclusion of a finely dispersed second phase into a ductile matrix has long been recognized as an extremely effective method of strengthening the matrix both at high and at low homologous temperatures. It has been found, however, that the factors which determine the high-temperature strength are not the same as those which are important at low temperatures. Below 0.5 Tm the size and distribution of the second phase particles are of prime importance in determining the strength,')' while above this temperature the strength is mainly dependent upon the previous thermal and mechanical history of the alloy,3-7 This paper is primarily concerned with explaining the response of the high-temperature mechanical strength of one of these alloys (DuPont's TD nickel) to various thermo-mechanical treatments. It will be shown that this response is not associated with the occurrence of any form of dislocation substructure within the matrix of the alloy. It has been found, however, that a correlation does exist between the elastic strain level in the matrix and the previous thermomechanical history of the alloy and that the observed changes in elastic strain level parallel the measured changes in high-temperature strength. It therefore must be concluded that variations in high-temperature strength are a direct result of the variations in elastic strain level. MATERIAL TD nickel contains approximately 2 vol pct of Tho2 in an unalloyed nickel matrix. It is formed, as a powder, by a chemical technique and this powder is compacted to form ingots which are then extruded to give 21/2-in.-diam rod. Rod of smaller diameter is prepared from the as-extruded rod by swaging. In the studies reported in this paper, 1/2-in.-diam rod was used. This rod received an anneal of 1 hr at 1100°C prior to being used in any of these studies. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Two methods were used to examine the structure of the nickel matrix of the TD nickel. These were: 1) transmission electron microscopy; 2) the analysis of the position and profile of X-ray diffraction lines obtained using the nickel matrix as the diffracting media. To prepare thin foils for electron-microscopical examination, slices of TD nickel approximately 0.050 in. thick were cut from the as-received 1/2-in.-diam rod. These were then chemically polished down to 0.045 in., rolled to 0.009 in., given a predetermined heat treatment, and thinned, using a modified Bollman technique, to provide the foils for observation. All observations were carried out at 100 kv, using a Hitachi HU-11 electron microscope. Specimens of the undeformed rod were prepared by grinding down the 0.050-in.-thick slices to approximately 0.015 in. and then thinning chemically and electrolytically to give the thin foils. The X-ray specimens were prepared by rolling 0.375-in.-thick rectangular blocks down to 0.075 in. The surfaces of the rolled material were ground flat, chemically polished to remove the layer disturbed by the grinding, and given a predetermined anneal in an inert atmosphere. They were then ground lightly to check their flatness and given a final chemical polish prior to being examined. The X-ray diffraction line profiles were measured using an automated Picker biplane diffractometer. A special specimen holder was built to allow a more accurate and reproducible positioning of the specimen. The line profiles were determined by carrying out intensity measurements at intervals of either 1/30 deg or 1/60 deg over a range of 3 deg on either side of the nickel peaks of interest. A piece of pure nickel which had been recrystallized to give a large grain size was used as a standard to give the X-ray line profile generated by a strain-free matrix. The analysis of the X-ray diffraction line profiles is a modification of that due initially to Warren and Aver-bach8and has been described elsewhere.3 This analysis gives a measurement of two parameters associated with the structure of the nickel matrix. These parameters are: 1) the size of the coherently diffracting domains within the nickel matrix; 2) the magnitude of the elastic strains in these domains. Both of these parameters are first determined in terms of a Fourier series. These series are obtained from other Fourier series which describe the measured profile of the X-ray diffraction lines. Thus, for both the coherently diffracting domain size and the elastic strain level, it is possible to plot Ft (the Fourier coefficient) against t (the term in the Fourier series), where t can be expressed in terms of a distance L and the Fourier coefficient Ft(S) (associated with elastic strain level) can be expressed in terms of the root mean square strain (e2)1/2. Thus a plot of (F 2)1/2 vs L can be obtained. Plots of this type are shown graphically in Figs. 6 and 8. Interpretation

At the present time all the larger and better chemical works of Europe and the United States have introduced, as essential factors in the economical manufacture of sulphuric acid, both Glover towers and Gay-Lussac absorbing columns. The clear exposition of facts given by Bode and Lunge in their very valuable technical contributions since 1870 has slowly but surely brought about radical changes from the old methods of manufacture ; but while the Gay-Lussac column has been known since 1827 and the Glover tower was originated in 1869, yet no theoretical treatise covering the subject fully was given to the world until 1876, when the various contrivances for demonstrating nitrous vitriol were described and criticized by Fr, Bode in a paper "On the Glover Tower" which obtained the great prize of the Berlin Society for the Promotion of Industry.*

An open pit rock structure usually contains geological planes of weakness. They are formed by joints, faults, bedding planes, fractures, and cleavages. Rock slope failures often occur in the form of sliding of rock blocks along a plane or several planes. Such a rock block has three- dimensional geometry, and consequently a vector method of analysis has been found useful in evaluating its stability. Rock blocks of a tetrahedral shape with one free surface have been analyzed by Londe. Rock blocks formed by sets of parallel joints have been analyzed by Wittke. The present chapter presents the analysis of rock blocks formed by planes of weakness of arbitrary orientation, and of three-dimensional geometry.

A year ago the authors published a paper on the solubility of sulphur dioxide in molten copper.l The data in that paper agreed closely with that obtained by previous investigators, which, however, did not agree with the theoretical predictions for solubility of triatomic gases of this type. It has generally been assumed that the reaction of solution is: 6Cu(l) + SO2(g) = Cu2S (in Cu) + 2 Cu2O (in Cu) [I] _ (CU2S)(CU2O)2 K = (Cu)6(Pso2) [2] Neglecting the slight change in copper concentration and considering that the concentrations of sulphur and oxygen are both proportional to the volume of gas absorbed, it follows that this volume should be proportional to the cube root of the pressure. It was found that a plot of the volume absorbed versus the cube root of the pressure gave a straight line, but that this line did not pass through the origin. Calculations of the equilibrium constant for the reaction showed that it was fairly constant for pressures above 100 mm. but that actually it approached zero at lower pressures. The conclusion was made therefore that the solubility as determined could not be expressed by Eq. I or by any other simple equation, particularly at low pressures. Other investigators have concluded that the solubility of sulphur dioxide in copper as well as in several copper alloys is more nearly proportional to the square root of the pressure.* Such a conclusion, however, does not satisfactorily account for the results, even when rather complicated mechanisms for the solution are assumed. The highly improbable speculations of Lepp2 and of Schneider and Esch3 based upon hypothetical dissociation pressures of Cu2O and CU2S dissolved in copper illustrate the type of reasoning that has been used to account for the discrepancy. In the discussion of the previous paper, the authors pointed out that the discrepancy might possibly be due to impurities in the copper, although the purest form available was used. Further consideration of the problem suggested that the impurities likely to have the greatest effect on the solubility of so2 in copper were oxygen, sulphur and carbon. Accordingly, further experiments have been made to show the effects of these elements. Experimental Methods The apparatus used for measuring solubility was essentially the same as that shown in the previous paper. However, since it was desired to make measurements at low pressures, a McLeod gauge was added and 6-mm. glass tubing was substituted for the capillary. This increased the "hot volume" considerably but was necessary in order to obtain good vacuums in a reasonable length of time. A mercury diffusion pump was also installed.

THE Piceance Creek Basin in northwestern Colorado is believed to contain the richest large deposit of oil shale in North America. The major portion, about 1650 sq miles, is bounded by the White River on the north, the Grand Hogback, which runs from Meeker to Rifle, on the east, the Colorado River to the south, and the drainage basin of Salt and Douglas Creeks on the west. The Basin is a plateau 7000 to 9000 ft high, composed of 3000 ft of the Green River series of Eocene age and surrounded by a steep escarpment of 1000 to 3000 ft. From the escarpment the beds dip gently toward the center. Although oil shale is found in all members of the Green River series, the rich thick beds are found chiefly in the Parachute Creek member. This is normally capped by 100 to 200 ft of the Evacuation Creek, the youngest member of the Green River series. Actually the Piceance Creek Basin oil shale is not a shale, nor does it contain oil. It is magnesium marlstone holding solid organic matter capable of being broken down by heat into gases, some of which can be condensed into oil. The marlstone is resilient nonporous rock, difficult to sample by pick or hammer and moil. Many companies and individuals prospected the Colorado oil shale shortly after the first World War,1 see Fig. 1, but because of the discovery of large quantities of petroleum in the late 1920's in California, Oklahoma, and East Texas, interest in oil shale development waned and did not revive until World War II. In 1944 the writer, employed by the Bureau of Mines, prospected the high grade oil shale in numerous places along the southern outcrop of the Piceance Creek Basin. Several channel samples about 100 ft in length were cut, see Fig. 2. An eightman crew needed a week to cut a satisfactory channel 80 ft long in the cliff face. The Phillips Petroleum Co., the Union Oil Co. of California and others also prospected the oil shale outcrop. In 1945 the Bureau of Mines initiated a core drilling program for the purpose of obtaining accurate samples from the Piceance Creek Basin. The U. S. Geological Survey set up a program for the geological study of the Basin that is still going on.2 Until the end of 1951 a total of 31 holes was drilled for core with diamond drills, and, in addition, cuttings through the oil shale have been obtained from 4 gas wells drilled by standard rotary oil well rigs.
