JOHN LIVERMORE CHRISTIE belongs to that group of metallurgists who entered the industrial field during World War I and have been responsible for many of the important metallurgical developments since that time. He was born in Montclair, N. J., on Jan. 31, 1894. After graduating from Montclair High School he attended Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, received his Ph.B. degree in chemistry in 1915 and that same year was employed by the Bridgeport Brass Co. in its laboratory. Among his first duties was the return to Sheffield Scientific School for two years of graduate work in metallography under C. H. Mathewson; receiving his M.S. degree in 1917. Thus we see him becoming one of that group of eminent physical metallurgists who, with Dr. Mathewson's teaching as a foundation, have done outstanding work in metallurgy.

A review of the physical and chemical aspects of the direct leaching of metal oxides has been given and com- pared to recent data of the authors and co-workers. The physical aspects, including the anisotropy of the dissolution, the hydration and the zero point of charge of some metal oxides are discussed first and then the kinetics of the dissolution of metal oxides are considered. A general mechanism of the leaching of oxides which describes most of the observed results is proposed.

During an investigation of high-strength manganese bronze by til Engineering Division of the Air Service, at McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio, particles of a "blue constituent" were noted in the microstructure of most of the bronzes examined. The constitution of the simple copper-zinc base alloy is still a matter of dispute in spite of the fact that the copper-zinc series is one of the oldest industrially important groups of alloys, and has received thc carly co~l+itlcl-ntio11 of scirntific rcsc:trch. Relative wetting phase permeabilities calculated from capillary pressure-saturation data are compared with measured relative permeability data. The equation relating relative permeability to capillary pressure-saturation data is derived by assuming that a porous medium is analogous to a bundle of capillary tubes. The equation includes a term to correct for the difference between fluid path length and length of core. Relative oil permeability data in the water-oil-gas system are presented, and it is shown that if the water is considered part of he rock matrix, the relative oil permeability curve is typical of a wetting phase relative permeability curve. Apparatus for measuring two and three-phase relative permeabilities are described. INTRODUCTION The difficulty in measuring relative permeability of cores has made it desirable to have a correlation between relative permeability and some more easily measured property of porous media. Such an easily measured property is the capillary preisure-saturation relation. In the past there has been a tendency to separate the capillary pressure concept from the very complex pore geometry and to consider that the capillary pressure-saturation curve give? only some characteristic distribution of interfacial curvature between two fluids.' Recently, however, it has been realized that if capillary pressure data are to yield information concerning pore size distribution2 and fluid flow in porous media. the pore must be assumed to have a simple shape such as a cylinder or a sphere. Childs and George' showed that relative water permeability could be calculated from the capillary pressure-water saturation curve by assuming that the pores are cylinders in which the fluid flowing obeys Poiseuille's Law, and that the capillary preisure curve indicated the size and number of pores. Purcell5 derived an equation relating the permeability of a porous medium to the capillary pressure curve by assuming the porous medium to he analogous to a bundle of capillary tubes. Gates and Lietz6 calculated relative permeability by an equa-tion derived from Purcell's equation. In this paper an equation is derived giving the relative water permeability as a function of water saturation by as-sulning that the core sample can be represented by a bundle of capillary tubes in which the fluid path length is not the same as the bulk length, and in which the fluid path length varies with saturation. THIS paper presents an experimental verification of some of the predictions made by one of us' concerning 'the influence of certain conditions of casting upon the size and position of the pipe', and the position of the segregate, in steel ingots. The predictions which we have been able to verify are the following A. That the pipe is shortened and the segregate raised 1. By slow casting; 2. By casting with the large end up instead of down; 3. By retarding the cooling of the top, e.g., by means of a sinking-head. B. That the pipe is shortened by slow cooling. C. That the pipe and segregate lie in the last freezing-part. Our procedure was to cast ingots of wax (commercially pure stearic acid) containing a little bright green copper oleate (usually 1.5 per cent.) under varying conditions; to saw each ingot open along a longitudinal plane passing through its axis ; and to examine the longitudinal section thus laid bare. In order to make the segregate or enriched part more distinct in color from the impoverished part, a very little red cerasine was added. An experiment which will be described later showed that the cerasine itself does not segregate markedly, if at all. Hence we may assume that the strong contrasts between the green and red shown in so many of our ingots are due, not to segregation of cerasine, but to that of the green oleate, in the wax which in itself is uniformly reddened with cerasine.

Geologic studies for the Federal and State governments in the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa zinc-lead district were begun in 1835, and subse¬quent surveys were made in the three states at in¬tervals until 1916, see Table I. The current study of the district, Fig. 1, by the U. S. Geological Survey was begun in 1942 in the hope that a systematic investigation would help in¬crease production of zinc and lead, then in ex¬tremely short supply. Major emphasis of the USGS program was on detailed mapping of the geologic structure and ore deposits. Preliminary maps and reports covering localities of intensive mining ac¬tivity have been published during the course of this study, Fig. 2. By 1950 the objectives of the study by the USGS were revised; 7Y2-min quadrangles of relatively unprospected localities as well as inten¬sively mined localities are now being mapped in Wisconsin. Since 1945 the investigation in Wiscon¬sin has been made in cooperation with the Wiscon¬sin Geological and Natural History Survey, and since 1951 the geologic mapping of areas of particu¬lar interest in Iowa has been performed in coopera¬tion with the Iowa Geological Survey. At intervals since 1943 the Illinois State Geological Survey has mapped the geologic structure and ore deposits of localities in the Illinois part of the mining district, see Fig. 2.

The w transformation in the Zr-Nb system was studied using X-ray diffraction, dilatometric, re-sistornetric, hardness, and metallographic techniques. w forms in a diffusionless, completely reaersible manner on quenching and in a diffusion-controlled manner- on aging. The temperature at which w begins to form on quenching was determined as a Junction of composition and was found to decrease with increasing solute content. w formed bv aging establishes a metastable equilibrium with an enriched ß phase. The ß/w + ß transus has been determined for this metastable equilibrium and employed to rationalize retrogression and reversion phenomena observed in these alloys. The decomposition mechanism is discussed in terms of a gradual or continuous transformation from ß to the w state. BETA- stabilizing alloying elements lower the MS temperature of the martensitic bcc (ß) to hcp (a') transformation in zirconium and titanium alloys. In certain titanium alloys, a lower symmetry modification of the martensitic structure, termed (a"), also has been reported.1,2 These martensitic transformations are suppressed when the amount of the ß-stabilizing element exceeds a critical level. However, the high-temperature ß phase cannot be quenched to room temperature without change. At alloy contents just above the critical level, |ß trans-forms to the w phase when cooled rapidly.3-6 The amount of w in quenched alloys is reduced by increasing alloy content, and this phase virtually disappears above a critical composition.5 In addition to the transformation during cooling, w also can be formed by aging ß at temperatures below approximately 500°C, and significant alloy enrichment of retained 13 accompanies the isothermal transformation.1-8 The structure of LC is closely related to that of the ß from which it forms.9-15 The bcc (ß) lattice can be generated using a hexagonal cell with three atoms located at (000) and ±(2/3, 1/3, 1/3). This cell has an axial ratio of 0.612 and is oriented with respect to the cubic cell such that (0001)H (111)C and [1120]H [101]C. Consequently, there are four possible orientations of the hexagonal cell, associated with the four (111) planes of the bee lattice. Formally w can be obtained from 0 by allowing the two atoms at the ±(2/3, 1/3, 1/3) positions to approach the coordinates ±(2/3, 1/3, 1/2) and there are four equally probable orientations of w for each 0 grain. In titanium alloys w retains the cubic axial ratio of 0.612" and hence also can be indexed as triply cubic, but this is not the case for aged Zr-Nb alloys where w is clearly hexagonal with an axial ratio of 0.622." The lattice parameters and atomic positions of w depend on thermal history and alloy content. The atomic positions (000), ±(2/3, 1/3, 1/2) provide reasonable agreement between calculated and observed diffracted intensities for w in the fully aged condition.10,14 In the quenched condition, on the other hand, the atoms appear to be displaced from the central plane12,13,15 and assume positions ±(2/3, 1/3, Z = 0.42-0.48) rather than ±(2/3, 1/3, 1/2). This results in a structure with trigonal rather than hexagonal symmetry. The readily detectable parameter and axial-ratio changes of w in Zr-Nb alloys make this system especially attractive for studying the structural changes that occur in the formation and aging of w. Particular attention in this investigation has been directed to the relationship between the structure of w in the quenched and aged conditions, and to certain aspects of the reaction kinetics. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE Zr-5, 12, 17.5, and 25 pct Nb alloys were prepared by a double arc-melting practice, encased in stainless-steel cans and hot-rolled to 1/8-in.-thick sheet.* Charged weights have been employed for the niobium contents and interstitial analyses are reported in Table I. Dilatometric, X-ray diffraction (filtered CuK, and MoK, radiation), metallographic, and hardness techniques have been employed to follow the transformations during isothermal and quench-aging heat treatments. MAGNESIUM and its alloys have long been characterized as possessing limited capacity for mechanical forming at atmospheric temperatures prior to rupturing despite their outstanding performances in this respect at elevated temperatures. Responsible for this behavior are the fundamental facts that these hexagonal-type metals have comparatively few slip elements at low temperatures for any extensive deformation and that, at high temperatures, additional slip elements become operative, thus enhancing greater plasticity under strain. The transitional point has been set at 225°C by Schmid1 for single crystals, and at 250°°C by Morell and Hanawalt2 for extruded magnesium metal. In a recent X-ray investigation on polycrystalline magnesium-alloy sheets, Barrett and Haller3 have revealed that, below the transitional temperature, the initial plastic deformation proceeds mostly by a twinning action; that, above such a temperature, the action is mostly by slip. The deep-drawing performance of the magnesium + 1.5 pct alloy sheett over a wide range of temperatures has been investigated by Weber and Vanden Berg,' and their results are presented in Fig r. It should be noted from this work that a maximum drawability of about 25 pct at room temperature has been obtained on this alloy under the conventional deep-drawing operations. For the same alloy, it is now possible to augment the cold drawability to about 40 pct by a process to be disclosed. Hitherto, this value has been obtained only by deep-drawing the alloy at around 230°C. That greater plastic flow is attainable at atmospheric temperatures on magnesium under certain deformational techniques was discovered by the authors6 in their analyses of plastic-deformational behaviors of pure magnesium. This fact is best illustrated in Fig 2 from the Hargreaves analysis6 performed by the authors under two different modes of loading. For direct test, a separate unstrained specimen was used for each load duration, whereas for the integrated test the same specimen was employed for all the five intermittent loadings so that the load duration was made additive throughout the investigation. The higher plastic flow-rate at room temperature, as designated by the Hargreaves constant S, was obtained by the integrated or intermittent loading procedure. The authors5 in further tests showed that, under such a procedure greater plastic flow was also realized with a progressive increase in deformational loads. These findings have been applied

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been experimenting with flotation processes to separate the spodumene-beryl ores mined at Kings Mountain, N.C. The success to date as well as the present status of the process is discussed. Further experimentation is underway and studies will be made on the milling costs involved in the flotation process. The pegmatites of the Kings Mountain-Lincoln ton, N.C., area constitute the largest known domestic reserve of beryl and spodumene. The reserve is estimated to contain 90 million tons of pegmatic material with 1,280,000 tons of recoverable Li,O(lithia) as spodurnene.' The pegmatites also contain 0.4 to 0.5 pct beryl disseminated throughout the orebodies. The pegmatites may contain a potential reserve of 240,-000 tons beryl, equivalent to approximately 34,000 tons of BeO. Different flotation methods for separating beryl from feldspar or quartz, or both, have been developed by various investigators.2-7 On the other hand, published information is limited on concentration of spodumene-beryl ores. As the response of beryl and spodumene to flotation is essentially the same, a successful separation of the two minerals depends upon use of a selective depressant or a selective collector for one of the minerals. Several years ago, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, recognizing the need for developing a large domestic supply of strategic beryl, undertook studies to develop improved methods of recovering this mineral. Because of the low beryl content of the pegmatites, economic production of the beryl entails its recovery as a byproduct of spodumene flotation. Thus, the development of procedures that would provide for maximum recoveries of the spodumene, as well as the beryl, was a primary objective of the studies. Tests were made on run-of-mine ore and spodumene flotation tailing from the Foote Mineral Co.'s spodumene concentrator at Kings Mountain (Fig. 1). Pet-rographic analyses of the ore and flotation tailing are given in Table I. Detailed analyses and examinations of the ore and tailings revealed that the beryllium was present in the form of a low-alkali beryl. The crystals were small, rarely larger than 14-mesh diam, and were clear and colorless. About 10 pct of the Li20 content of the ore was present in the mica and feldspar components of the pegmatite. In some weathered ores the associated clays also contained small amounts of lithia. This is typical of pegmatites in the Kings Mountain area. LABORATORY TESTS In the past, a vigorous chemical treatment of the spodumene surfaces with acid or caustic soda has been considered essential for satisfactory selective flotation of the spodumene from the other minerals in pegmatites. Many tests were made during this investigation to determine if chemical treatment of the spodumene could be eliminated in favor of a reagent combination that would depress the other minerals while selectively floating the spodumene. A simple reagent combination and process was developed that gave better spodumene recovery and grade of concentrate than the more elaborate acid or caustic treatment methods previously used. The finely ground ore pulps were conditioned with either an ammonium, alkali, or alkaline earth lignin sulfonate and sodium fluoride, and the spodumene was floated and cleaned using oleic acid as the collector. The spodumene tailing was deslimed, conditioned with sulfuric acid and coco amine acetate, and floated to reject mica. The mica tailing was thickened and conditioned with hydrofluoric acid, then washed to remove the acid. The washed pulp was conditioned with sodium hydroxide for pH control, and the beryl was floated and cleaned with oleic acid as the collector. Table II summarizes the results of the laboratory test work. About 77 pct of the spodumene and 75 pct of the beryl were recovered from the pegmatitic material. The spodumene concentrate assayed 6.1 pct Li20 and 0.01 pct BeO, and the beryl product assayed 3.0 pct Li20 and 1.57 pct BeO. Similar results were ob-

SUMMARY Statistics on roof falls indicate that the cost of just removing the unwanted waste from roof falls in US coal mines amounts to about $20 M per year. Almost 40 percent of fatal accidents occur under permanently supported roofs, indicating that the assessment of roof stability is still a very difficult task. In an effort to obtain a better understanding of roof fall occurrences, rock strength and ground stresses were determined in the roof of one mine each in Western Kentucky, northern West Virginia, and Eastern Kentucky. Triaxial ground stress determinations clearly show that horizontal stresses were higher than vertical stresses, and that maximum stresses in the horizontal plane were concentrated between the NE-SW to E-W direction, with the exception of the Eastern Kentucky site which was above the drainage. Magnitudes of stress components may vary considerably in one drlll hole. Strength tests of roof strata materials were done on core samples. Mapping of roof falls showed that the geometry of an opening or maximum span were not the overruling factor because in the same general area, a roof fall was observed in a room (entry) which connected two stable four-way intersections. It should be noted that, in very wet areas, the roof can break up to the bed where water is carried, and a very low ratio between extent of roof fall to height of roof, fall is observed. Geometry is, however, a contributing factor because nearly 70 percent of roof falls are intersection falls. The frequency of fractures parallel to bedding in failed roof strata is much higher than that observed in the original strata, indicating a significant amount of working in the roof before failure.

Geological investigation and research have contributed greatly in making industrial minerals the basis of an important industry in the state. North Carolina contains a wide variety of industrial minerals and rock. Mica, feldspar, kaolin, halloysite, talc, pyrophyllite, silli-manite, and spodumene are used to illustrate the progress being made. IN a previous paper1 an attempt was made to indicate the importance of industrial minerals in North Carolina and the wide variety of such materials present. The present paper is concerned with geological investigation and research which have made industrial minerals the basis of an important industry in the state. Geological mapping has gone through three stages in North Carolina during the present century. The first stage is represented by excellent reports of which Corundum and the Peridotites of Western North Carolina,2 Volume I, now a classic, is representative. In this report, a geologic map of the western third of the state is shown on a scale of 10 miles to the inch. The next stage is represented by folios" of the U. S. Geological Survey published between 1902 and 1932. Most of these contained 30 min quadrangle maps on a scale of 2 miles to the inch. The third step is represented by reports prepared during the past 10 years which contain geological maps4 on scales varying from 500 ft to 1 mile to the inch, while many mine maps have been prepared on scales varying from 20 to 150 ft to the inch. As the scale on which geological mapping has been done has decreased, the amount of information secured has increased. A quarter of a century of service of steel rails on our oldest railroads, many of which have changed their standard sections three or four times, has furnished, and is furnishing, excellent opportunities to study their wear and behavior in the track. Such experience is valuable for the design of new sections, now required to meet the constantly increasing severity of railroad service. Before presenting the new sections for consideration, I will briefly call attention to some features of past experience. For convenience of study, rails may be separated according to their weight and height into four groups, viz.: 1. Hails weighing per yard from 52 to 60 pounds, and 34 to 4 inches high. 2. " " " " " 60 " 72 " " 46 to 44 " " 3. " " " " " 72 " 90 ' 41/8 to 5 4. " " " " " 85 or more " " over 5 " I Experience in this country is confined mainly to sections in groups Nos. 1, 2 and 3. • During the past few years I have had the opportunity to run my car over many thousands of miles of railway laid with the principal sections in use, and to obtain diagrams showing their deflections, permanent set, and, in a great measure, their manner of wear. The First Group.—The first steel rails imported, and those manufactured here, were light sections—included in the first group—and many of them, being rolled in rolls used for rolling iron sections, have pear-shaped heads, 2 3/8 to 2 1/2 inches wide, the base being heavy and from 1/4 to 1/2 inch narrower than the height. These rails were laid upon ties of solid timber, at least 8 inches face, spaced 2 feet from center to center. The moments of inertia of these rails were low, only ranging from 8 for the lightest sections to 12 for the heaviest. The subject article is an excellent comparison between two potential oxidants, molecular oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, as used in the Palangana field at the time of the trials. The tests showed no advantage to using hydrogen peroxide; however, it would be unwise to generalize that the experience in these trials was universally true. During the time of the work cited, extremely high levels of an unusual impurity were recycling in the lixiviant, which substance was a catastrophically destructive catalyst for peroxide. Since this material was not removed before recycle, it was not surprising that much of the peroxide fed was decomposing in the feed piping and never made contact with the uranium mineralization. Under these conditions, indeed, peroxide showed no improvement over oxygen. This is, however, perhaps the most adverse environment encountered to date in US in-situ uranium leaching. In other operations, peroxide has proved advantageous where two factors have been exploited: 1.Despite the tendency for Hz02 to decompose to water and oxygen in the in-situ leach environment, its higher redox potential before decomposition has provided higher leach rates. In some formulations, overloading beyond the O2 saturation equivalent with peroxide has allowed higher oxidant levels, and higher leaching rates, when overloading with molecular O2, led to vapor-locking.
