At the time this investigation was initiated variations were observed in the quality of different heats of basic electric-furnace steels, although they had been made under purportedly similar conditions. This indicated that these variations were related to normally unobserved variations in the character of the bath, especially during the "refining" period. Although the slags used for this operation are commonly referred to as "reducing" slags, and are regarded as having a "deoxidizing" action on the bath, no reliable measurements of this action were available. It was decided, therefore, to study the behavior of oxygen in the metal for ' large enough number of heats to learn its normal variations and to relate these variations to regularly observed conditions of operation. The most important general conclusion reached was that the time a heat is held under a reducing 'lag should be reduced to a minimum, which was about an hour and a half under the conditions studied. Beyond this time no observable beneficial effects are obtained from the reducing slags, insofar as oxygen and sulphur content of the bath are concerned. It is likely that added time may increase hydrogen content as well as heat costs. The oxygen content of the bath is never reduced below the amount in equilibrium with the carbon. Concurrently with this work, J. S. Marsh1 presented data that supplement and support many of the results of this paper. Procedure The work was done in two different electric-furnace shops of the same plant. The selection of heats was made primarily with regard to the convenience of heat schedules. companion slag and metal samples were taken just prior to slag-ofi and throughout the refining period for an initial set of 17 heats, and before slag-off and near tap for an additional I3 heats. slag Sampling presented no particular problem; a spoonful of slag was poured onto a metal plate and when sufficiently cool was sealed in an airtight container. Sampling the metal for oxygen presented a more complex problem. Because of the lack of previous experience in sampling electric-furnace baths, a number of methods were compared. Chilled Wedge Samples2 An unkilled metal sample is removed from the furnace in a well-slagged car-bometer spoon and poured immediately into a heavy copper mold designed to provide rapid freezing. Three different types of molds were used to determine the optimum for electric-furnace hats. The Big wedge Mold (a) was a 4 by 4 by 4-in. split copper mold, yielding a wedge-shaped casting I in. wide, 1 1/2 in. long, and 34 in. maximum thickness, and was finally adopted as the most satisfactory design.

THERE is at least one concrete indication that Soviet Russia's two most important iron ore producing centers are seriously depleted. While keeping in mind Russia's penchant for reverse propaganda, one piece of evidence indicates that Magnitugorsk in the southern Urals and Krivoi Rog in the Ukraine have been mined to a point where lower grade ores are being recovered. An article in Pravda, Soviet newspaper, by I. P. Bardin. a Russian metallurgist, says that ore presently mined must undergo an expensive enriching cycle before it can be used in blast furnaces. Com- pounding Russian metallurgical troubles is the low quality of coking coals. High ash and sulphur content typifies the coal Badin talks about. Coal from the Ukraine, Eastern Siberia, Kazakhstan, and the Far East requires extensive treatment before it can be used, according to the article in Pravda.

In order to find an empirical relation between a quantity F and (m) independent variables or factors, each of which take (n) different values or levels, it is necessary to conduct nm different experiments (all possible combinations of the factors), each of which has to be repeated a few times (usually five) due to the scattering of the data. The total number of such experiments is very large, thus for example, when m = 4 and n = 5, it is equal to 5.54 = 3125; and very rarely is it possible to conduct such a number of experiments. Various possible methods of planning partial experiments are illustrated in Fig. 1. Each method shows a large combinative square consisting of five columns and five rows of middle squares, each of which, in turn, is further divided into five columns and five rows of cells. Such a partition corresponds to a plan of an experiment with four factors, each of which takes five different levels. The blackened cells indicate the combination of factors in a partial experiment. The total number of experiments is reduced on the basis of the following considerations: a) The effect of only a few levels of some factors is studied (Fig. la). Such an investigation gives no information on the effect of some factors, therefore it cannot be accepted as satisfactory; b) By reducing the number of levels of each factor; in such a case it is not possible to obtain an empirical relationship, but only whether some factors have an effect. This is evidently inadequate;

IN recent years considerable interest has been shown in surface-alloyed metals, particularly those of chromium (chromized steels), which have excellent corrosion [ ] resistance under a variety of severe conditions, and may undergo bending and flanging operations without spalling. An early method' employed to produce a high-chromium case on steel was developed by Kelley in 1921. It consisted of heating a low-carbon steel in intimate contact with powdered chromium in the presence of hydrogen at temperatures sufficiently high to permit diffusion of chromium into the steel. The usefulness of this process was limited because the extremely high temperatures of 1200° to 1400°C. (2200° to 2550 F.) caused excessive grain growth and warpage. Louenstein and Ulmer2 packed iron castings in ferrochromium and com- [ ] mon salt, and heated for approximately three hours at 930° to 1040°C. (1700° to 1900°F.). A recent and more practical method of depositing chromium on steel surfaces has been developed in Germany by Daeves, Becker and Steinberg3-8 and in Russia by Izgaryshev and Sarkisov.9 This process consists of passing gaseous chromium chloride over the steel to be chromized at temperatures of 900° to 1000°C., or packing them in a porous, ceramic material that previously had been saturated with chromium chloride. THERE are at least two effects of temperature on the stress required to produce plastic flow. 1) Metals plastically strained for the same amount at different temperatures possess different stress-strain curves and different internal structures (e.g., nature and density of imperfections). 2) There is both experimental and theoretical evidence that the stress necessary to produce plastic flow may vary with temperature even though the internal structure remains constant.1-5 Much of the data in the literature is difficult to interpret because these two effects are simultaneously present. In the work reported here, they are considered separately. Standard 0.505 in. tensile specimens were prepared from high-purity Mond nickel and OFHC copper. Nickel specimens were annealed in hydrogen at 1150°C for 30 min and furnace cooled. This produced an average grain diameter of 1.4 mm. Copper specimens were annealed in vacuum at 525°C for 6 hr and furnace cooled. This produced an average grain diameter of 0.11 mm. Nickel tensile specimens were prestrained in tension at 500°K, whereas copper tensile specimens were prestrained in tension at room temperature. All specimens were cooled to 74°K and heated to room temperature. After these treatments all of the tensile specimens of a given set possessed identical structures. All specimens were returned to the tensile machine and tested at various temperatures and constant cross-head speed. Many of the tensile curves showed well defined yields but, in order to minimize personal judgment, the yield was always chosen as the stress corresponding to 0.2 pct plastic deformation. Results are summarized in the graph of yield vs temperature of test, Fig. 1. All of the specimens corresponding to any one line have had identical treatments and, therefore, have identical internal structures. Thus, each line gives the relation between yield stress and temperature for one constant internal structure. The lowest line, which is for annealed nickel, shows no measurable variation of yield with temperature. This is similar to Blewitt's6 results on copper single crystals, but a variation in yield with temperature was found by Andrade and Henderson' in single crystals of nickel, and by Car-recker and Hibbard8 in annealed polycrystalline copper. The three other lines, which are for prestrained materials, show that there is a linear relation between yield stress and temperature when the internal structure remains constant. Such a relation might be expected from a rate equation such as that of Kauzmannl on the assump- tion that the activation energy is either independent of or linear with temperature. These results would also be expected if the shear moduli of copper and nickel are linear functions of temperature for, as Cottrell and Stokes have pointed out," in all dislocation theories of strength the flow stress appears proportional to the shear modulus of the material. In copper and nickel, since the modulus of elasticity decreases roughly linearly with increase in temperature," it is probable that the modulus of shear also decreases approximately linearly with increasing temperature. A detailed discussion of the effect of these and other factors on the temperature dependence of flow stress in face-centered-cubic metals has recently been given by Seeger.4

Results of investigation of corrosion-fatigue of metals at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station have been presented by the author in four papers.1, 2, 3, 4 In those papers references were given to the work of Haigh in 1917.5 The investigation at Annapolis included a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. The experiments showed that even slight corrosion simultaneous with fatigue may cause failure at stresses far below the ordinary endurance limit. The experiments also showed that, for most metals, severe stressless corrosion prior to fatigue is much less damaging than even slight corrosion simultaneous with fatigue. The term "corrosion-fatigue" was restricted to mean the simultaneous action of corrosion and fatigue. The combined effect of corrosion followed by fatigue was called "prior-corrosion fatigue." A stress-cycle graph representing corrosion-fatigue is a curve approaching a horizontal asymptote, the ordinate of which may be called a "corrosion-fatigue limit." To avoid confusion in later discussion, the term "endurance limit" will be restricted to mean the fatigue limit obtained by tests in air with specimens as free as possible from stress concentration and from corrosion. The cndursnce limit as thus obtained presumably represents an inherent property of the metal.

A great landslide occurred on June 23, 1925, in the valley of Gros Ventre River, about 35 miles south of Yellowstone National Park (Fig. 1). The relations of the north-easterly dipping rock formations of the slide scarp and of the dam formed by the slide are shown in the diagrammatic cross-section of the valley (Fig. 2). This generalized section is based on unpublished maps and notes by Eliot Rlackwelder, in the files of the IT. S. Geological Survey. Heavy rains and melting snow in the Gros Ventre Mountains had saturated clay layers in the Carboniferous strata, which dip toward the valley at angles of 18" to 21°, consequently an enormous mass of rock at the end of the north spur of Sheep Mountain became loosened and, on the afternoon of June 23, slid suddenly down into the valley. ReCENT work has indicated that the substantial decrease in the rate of fatigue crack propagation for aluminum observed below a critical vacuum level can be attributed to the depletion of oxygen or water vapor from the vicinity of the fatigue crack opening.' At reduced gas pressures, generally below 10-2 Torr with fatigue strain amplitudes in the range *1 to 2 x 10-3 and cyclic loading rates of 25 to 50 cps, estimated rates of oxide or hydroxide monolayer adsorption on newly formed crack surfaces can fall behind the actual rate of crack extension. Changes in the critical pressure required for the transition in fatigue behavior with changes in temperature, strain amplitude, and cyclic frequency can be interpreted from variations in the adsorption and crack growth rates.'" Although the adsorption model generally appears to explain the enhanced fatigue resistance of reactive metals in vacuum, the specific adsorbing gas species and nature of the adsorption mechanism are uncertain. In addition to the direct dissociation and adsorption of O2 on the metal surfaces,3 the dissociation of H20 and subsequent adsorption of H ions have been advanced for aluminum alloys.4 The present note describes some measurements of the fatigue behavior of 1100 aluminum in reduced partial pressures of specific gases including O2, H2O, and H2 in order to provide additional experimental data. Cantilever-type specimens of 1100-H14 aluminum were fatigued in cyclic reverse bending at constant strain amplitude using a multispecimen vacuum apparatus and procedure described previously.' After initial vacuum evacuation to 1 x 10-7 Torr, the appropriate gas species was bled into the system through a calibrated leak valve. The input rate was adjusted to maintain the desired pressure level under continuous evacuation, thus minimizing possible changes in gas composition during testing. High-purity input gases including 99.9 pct O2, 99.999 pct H 2, and water vapor from triply distilled H 2 O were used to provide residual pressures. Trace amounts of contaminant species were limited by passing the Oz and H 2 input gases through liquid-nitrogen-cooled copper coils prior to entry to the test chamber. Care was taken to repeatedly flush the gas lines and valves before testing to minimize the effect of adsorbed contaminants. Residual gas pressures in the range 10-6 to 5 x x3 Torr were monitored by an NRC ionization gage corrected for each gas species. In the higher-pressure range, 5 x 1CT3 to 5 x 10' Torr, an NRC alphatron gage was used. In operation, eight simultaneous fatigue tests were conducted at a constant strain amplitude of *1.2 x 10 at cyclic bending rates of 25 and 50 cps to give an average fatigue life of 6.5x 105 cycles-to-fracture at standard atmosphere and 3.3 x 106 cycles in 1 x 10"7 Torr vacuum. Representative results for the effect of residual O2, H2O, and H2 contents on the fatigue life are shown in Fig. 1 for tests performed at 50 cps. It is apparent that the presence of either O2 or H2O gas in the system at partial pressures greater than 10"3 Torr was noticeably detrimental to the fatigue life. In contrast, the enhanced fatigue resistance typical of high-vacuum environments was retained with pure H 2 through the pressure range up to 1 Torr. The objectives of the investigation herein reported were to determine: (I) the S-curves for certain selected cast steels, (2) whether or not the published S-curves for wrought steels are satisfactory for use on cast steels of similar composition, and (3) to prepare hardenability curves of the selected cast steels. In order to make the final comparisons between cast and wrought steel more completely tangible, it was deemed advisable not only to determine S-curves for the steels submitted in the cast condition but also to roll some of the cast-steel test bars and determine comparison S-curves on such wrought material. This procedure eliminates the composition variable and makes it possible to reveal the differences resulting from plastic deformation of the cast structure in addition to providing the comparison with published data on wrought steels. Cast Steels The cast steels selected for the preparation of S-curves, or time-temperature transformation curves, were similar to S.A.E. series 1030, 2330, 4130 and 4330. Of these the 1030 was supplied by The Crucible Steel Casting Co., Cleveland, Ohio, and the other three by The Sawbrook Steel Castings Co., Lockland, Ohio. The steels were furnished in the as-cast condition. The manufacturers supplied the chemical analyses and the properties that could be obtained in the heat-treated condition—all of which is summarized in Table I. THE measurement of the reading of a thermoelement is the measurement of an electromotive force extraordinarily small compared to those generally used in commercial work. Of the various possible methods of measuring such a quantity, the most advantageous is always a delicate galvanometer. Since a galvanometer measures current, it is necessary to adopt some scheme by which its current reading shall indicate electromotive force. There are two general methods of doing this. One is to use the delicate galvanometer as a "direct reader," that is, to let the electromotive force of the thermoelement furnish the power and produce the current measured. If the resistance is constant the reading will, after a suitable calibration, give the electromotive force of the thermoelement which, by means of a table or of a suitable scale in the galvanometer itself, will FIG. 1.-SIMPLIFIED POTENTIOMETER. The other method, that of the potentiometer, is to balance the electromotive force of the thermoelement by means of another electromotive force, using the galvanometer to tell when the balance is made. The usual way of getting this other electromotive force is to have a battery, the "bull" cell, send a current through a series of resistances, which 'may in a special case be the resistance of a single wire. The fall of potential along this circuit will then, by Ohm's Law, be proportional to the resistance; the potential difference between any two points, proportional to the resistance between the two points. Case studies of the behaviour of large open stopes at the New Broken Hill Consolidated Mine, Broken Hill and the CSA Mine, Cobar, N.S.W. are considered. Deformations were measured by multipoint rod extensometers in sufficient detail to note the phases of rock behaviour, from intact through to rock-fall. In one case readings were obtained from a zone of stress failure in which two bumps, felt as ground tremors, occurred. In this case noise and stress were also monitored. Deformations were analysed in relation to previously measured in situ rock stress, and conclusions drawn about the degree of conformity to, and the areas of departure from, elastic model behaviour. Attempts to describe the growth of instability utilize reduction factors of the apparent modulus, a magnification factor for the apparent Poisson's ratio, and a correlation between progressive noise count and displacement. Monitoring itself is seen as an aid in determiing the final dimensions of stopes and pillars. One large stope, of intermediate dimension 80 m, was mined essentially without change of plan, whereas a change in mining plan was necessary in other stopes. Aspects of interest to mine planners, and areas where futher research is needed, are indicated.

BECAUSE of the many conflicting opinions regarding the functioning of the ball load and the characteristics of ball wear in ball-mill grinding, the following resume of reports covering recent tests conducted at the Hayden plant of the Kennecott Copper Corporation is submitted with the view of pointing out certain salient features that should throw additional light on the subject. MILLS USED Cylindrical drum mills with trunnion feed and discharge were used. The discharge trunnion was I3 1/2 in. in diameter. Dimensions inside the lining were 6 ft. 6 in. in diameter and 9 ft. 6 in. long. The mills were Britannia-lined and nine lifter bars projected 2 in. from the lining. The mill speed was 16 2/3 r.p.m. Feed to the mill was 9 per cent on 10-mesh, 85 per cent on 100-mesh, 77 per cent solids. New balls measured 2 in. in diameter and the approximate weight of the ball load was 40,000 pounds. INITIAL TEST During a test that was being conducted to determine the relative economic value of standard cast balls vs. forged steel balls in the local grinding operation, certain observations were made in regard to the functioning of the various ball sizes and the characteristics of ball wear, which warranted a supplementary test for the purpose of confirming such observations. For the initial test, the necessity for developing a graduated load of the new forged balls before the test could be started was realized, but the time required to obtain a graduated load and the functioning of the various ball sizes was not clear. No advantage could be seen for starting out with a full load of forged balls, as this initial load, at the least, would have to be completely ground out and replaced by daily additions of balls before the graduation could be complete and a normal static condition of ball sizes reached. For a considerable period prior to exhaustion of this initial charge there would be an unusual quantity of worn balls of a certain size, which would not be typical of a normal charge and could influence the characteristics and functioning of the entire load. Therefore, it was decided to start by daily addition of the forged balls to a mill that contained a normal operating load of cast balls. After 88 days of operation the mill was shut down for inspection. By that time the load consisted of a mass of forged balls functioning around a large core of the residual material of the former cast-ball load. This core of cast slugs, locally referred to as "the kidney," was well defined from the forged-ball load.

S. T. Killian (Johnstown, Pa.)—This is one of the finest papers I have read. Tying in stoichiometric calculations with furnace performance and practice is a step which had to be taken sooner or later. The noteworthy difference between Dr. Joseph's type of calculations and regular blast furnace calculations is that the Ib mol system is used as a basis. With the Ib mol system, weights, volumes, and chemical reactions can all be expressed in the same equation. In the paper, wind, ore, flux, and fuel are all expressed as lb or lb mols. Probably Dr. Joseph does not realize it, but the vague word coke appears only twice in the entire paper. Lb of C and Ib mols of C are followed through reactions but the word coke appears only as 1560 lb coke per ton of pig and 1700 lb of coke per ton of iron. Obviously in order to understand furnace reactions, the coke should be expressed as lb or lb mols of C. Furnaces can also be compared more easily. In some respects the paper is too thorough and too complete. The effects of the metalloids reduced into the iron upon the top gases represents a difference of less than 3 pct of the CO formed in the bosh. Due to the completeness of the calculations in relation to the CO/CO2 ratio, this was included and was necessary. However, the exclusion might have enabled more furnace men to follow the lb mol system of calculations through the blast furnace to a better degree. By considering only irons of similar analysis, this part of the calculations might have been omitted. However, if this had been done, total rewriting of the paper later would have been necessary in order to make the work complete as it is now. It also would not have been nearly as authoritative. In the paper, there appears the reaction: H2O + CO ? CO2 + H2 [I] Dr. Joseph states that he did not take this reaction into consideration in any calculations pertaining directly to the paper. The piobable reason- for this is that although it contains all the main reacting top gases except N2, it is rather inflexible since it is monomolecular in relation to each of the reacting gases and does not tie in with the gasification of C. Actually the reactions: H2O + C ? CO + H2 [2] 2H2O + C ? CO2 + H2 [31 and the solution loss reaction: CO2 + c ? 2c0 [41 tend to assume an equilibrium through the reaction: H2O + CO ? CO2 + H2 [I] which should be considered a balancing or equilibrium reaction. Reactions 2, 3 and 4 permit furnace conditions to balance with the CO/CO2 ratio and H2 formation. They tie in with the solution loss. Reaction 1 unites them chemically. Probably the best calculation to make at this time would be to try to find the relative importance of the CO2 from the flux and the H2 in the dilution on an actual furnace gas analysis. For this purpose the Dob-scha-Carnegie-Illinois paper—"Effect of Sized and Sintered Mesabi Iron Ores On Blast Furnace Performance" is chosen. This paper was presented before the blast furnace section of the AIME in 1948. This represents the best large scale furnace operation available to me. Unfortunately the changes were brought about by beneficiation of the burden and not by changes on one burden. In choosing the basis for the calculation in relation to the furnace, 100 mols of dry top sgas is chosen. This leaves something to be desired inasmuch as the nitrogen basis is changing but I believe it will be better understood than any other type and it is the easiest to use.

Two distinct types of defects occur at times in copper wire as a result of the use of dies of improper design or undesirable wire-drawing practice. The conditions under which these defects may be produced, as well as precautions to be taken in order to prevent them, have been known to The American Brass Co. for many years. The quality of the copper wire bars and rods has too often and unjustly been held responsible for these particular defects and it is to correct any such belief that this paper is presented. An extremely high quality of electrolytic copper has been supplied to the trade by all refineries for the last 20 years at least. The purity of the copper would average well above 99.900 per cent. The casting of the wire bars has been handled in a generally satisfactory manner. The bars have been cast sound, with a flat to slightly crowning set and have been free from sloppy edges, cold sets, etc. In other words, the wire bars have met A. S. T. M. specifications and have been generally satisfactory. For the most part, they have been everything that could be desired from a quality standpoint yet most of the wire mills in this country and in Europe have at times held the quality of the copper responsible for the two types of defects described in this paper. As a matter of fact, these defects are produced entirely in the wire mills. The author has visited many of the large wire mills in the United States and in Europe to investigate these defects. In some cases the trouble has been so serious that the wire mill has ceased operations. At times the wire mills are reluctant to believe that they are responsible for the defective product. The effect of die design, wire-drawing practice, etc., upon the quality of copper wire has received little study on the part of wire mills, particularly those that have commenced operations in the last few years. Two Types of Defects One type of defect is generally known in this country as "check marks;" in Europe it is termed "crowfeet" (Fig. 1). The effect of Cr2O3 on melting relations of iron oxide at oxygen pressures slightly above those prevailing in contact with metallic iron has been determined. Liquidus and solidus temperatures of wüstite are raised by the addition of Cr2O3, from 1385°C for pure iron oxide to 1420°C at the peri-ledie point where wüstite, iron chromite, liquid, and gas coexist in equilibrium under the atmospheric conditions used in the present investigation (CO2/H2 = 1). It has been shown in a previous investigation1 that the liquidus and solidus temperatures of iron oxide are drastically increased by the addition of Cr2O3 under the relatively oxidizing conditions prevailing in air. This is to be expected in view of the easy substitution of cr3+ for Fe3+ in crystalline oxide structures which are stable at high oxygen pressures, as demonstrated for instance by the completeness of the solid solution series Fe2O3-Cr2O3 at high temperatures (>1000°C). The stable phase of iron oxide at oxygen pressures approximating those prevailing when metallic iron is present is wüstite. This phase, although commonly represented by the simplified formula FeO for sake of convenience, in reality has a defect structure in which a part of the iron ions are present as Fe3+. It is to be expected that at least a limited amount of cr3 ions will substitute for Fe in this structure when Cr2O3 is added to wüstite. Depending on the ease of this substitution in comparison with that of cr3 substitution for Fe in iron oxide-Cr2O3 liquids under the same atmos- pheric conditions, the liquidus and solidus temperatures of wüstite may increase or decrease upon addition of Cr2O3. The methods of establishing these melting relations and the results obtained are presented in the following. I) EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) General Procedure. The quenching technique was used in this study. Oxide mixtures were heated at chosen constant temperatures in an atmosphere consisting of equal parts of CO2 and H2 until equilibrium was established among gas and condensed phases. The samples were then quenched in mercury to room temperature, and the phases present were determined by microscopic and X-ray investigation. 2) Preparation of the Mixtures. Starting mixtures were prepared by weighing and thoroughly mixing Fe2O3 and Cr2O3, or wüstite and Cr2O3. The Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 used were "Baker Analyzed" reagent grades, whereas wüstite of composition was synthesized by reducing Fe203 at 1325°C in an atmosphere consisting of equal parts of CG andHz. In order to avoid contact with crucibles, the equilibration runs were made with small pellets suspended from thin (-0.004-in.) platinum wires. Mixtures made from FOs and Cr203 were readily pelletized at a pressure of 500 atm in a 9.5-mm die, whereas mixtures made from wüstite and Cr203 when treated identically were too weak for handling. In order to obtain a stronger product, these pellets were sintered by heating for 2 min at -1200°C in the same atmosphere as was subsequently used for the equilibration runs (CG/H2 = 1:1). During the sintering, these pellets were wrapped in thin (0.0004-in.) platinum foil, which was stripped off before the equilibration runs. In order to reduce the time needed for equilibrium to be attained, preliminary equilibration of relatively large pellets of each mixture was carried out at -1200°C for 4 to 12 hr. Smaller pellets
