THE figures on enrollment in the engineering schools of the United States and Canada indicate that the total number of students in these schools for the current year, 1949-50, is about 10% less than it was a year ago. This year, 226 - 533 undergraduates and graduate students are studying engineering in the United States and Canada as compared with. 249,913 students last year. These figures are taken from advance data in the Journal of Engineering Education for February 1950.

Petroleum engineers generally are of the opinion that the flow conditions and, therefore, the formulas that apply to the flow of oil and gas in long pipe lines differ in many ways from flow conditions in oil wells. One of the reasons why the formulas in common use for pipe-line flow do not correctly apply to oil wells is that the flow lines are vertical and not horizontal. Another factor to be considered is that the fluid is a mixture of oil and gas and that the physical characteristics of these two components are affected differently by changing conditions of pressure and temperature during upward flour. Realizing the need for accurate data on flow in vertical pipes under conditions caused both by natural flow and the gas-lift, the U. S: Bureau of Mines has installed equipment at the Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla., for the purpose of studying this problem. In additon a study will be made of the comparative effects of different natural-flow and gas-lift methods of producing oil on ultimate production from reservoir sands. Experimental Equipment The experimental equipment consists of a regular oil-field steel derrick, a large pressure tank installed in a concrete pit beneath the derrick floor, compressors and pumps, gas separators and absorbers, metering and control devices, and the necessary pipe connections. The crown-block level represents the derrick floor at an oil well, and the "producing sand" is the pressure tank below the derrick floor. The difference in elevation between the crown-block level and the tank is 90 ft. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show the construction and exterior arrangement of the equipment. The success of the experiment will of course depend largely upon the accuracy of the oil and gas measurements and the temperature and pressure determinations. This paper is the third of a series treating of the relations of ores of the metals to igneous rocks. The first' outlined the general problem; the second2 proposed a classification of lode ores, and showed how the distribution of the deposits is in a certain measure controlled by the contour of the roof of the parent batholith. A number of mining districts were discussed, the examples being selected chiefly from group 2 of the classification. The proposed classification of lode deposits, briefly stated, is as follows: 1. Cryptobatholithic: near hidden batholiths which have not yet been exhumed by erosion. 2. Acrobatholithic: in and near cupolas or domes of batholiths—the high points of larger underlying masses. 3. Epibatholithic: on batholiths, near their rims, but below eroded cupolas, or below the highest points of the roofs. 4. Embatholithic: among closely-spaced outcrops which probably are parts of a single bathohth. The outcrops of invaded rocks predominate. 5. Endobatholithic. in and near roof pendants of large batholiths. The invading rocks predominate. 6. Hypobatholithic: in deeply-eroded batholiths, where even roof pendants have been eroded. Deposits of certain metals on the roofs of the batholiths are much more numerous in some positions than deposits of other metals, and the horizontal zonal arrangements of lodes of different metals are shown characteristically only in certain groups. In a large measure, also, the character of the fracturing and metallization is determined by the position on the roof of the batholith. The disseminated copper ores in porphyry constitute a clearly-defined type. All the deposits of these ores, as far as known, are in group 2. They appear to have been formed only in and around small upward projections of the parent granitic masses, and not low on the walls of the

ONE Of the most significant developments in the iron industry in recent years has been the discovery and opening of enormous reserves of low-grade ore in eastern and northeastern Cuba. The two principal fields are the Mayari and the Moa, situated on Nipe bay, in the Province of Oriente. A less well-known district of the same type is that of Baracoa, at the east of the island, and another is in Camaguey province in central Cuba. In the comprehensive estimates of the iron-ore reserves of the world, published during the summer of 1910 by the International Geological Congress in Sweden,' these Cuban deposits are estimated at about 2,000,000,000 tons. Certain it is that the reserve is a large one. The Spanish-American Iron Co., the Juragua Iron Co. (Bethlehem Steel Co.), the U. S. Steel Corporation, and others have been active in this exploration.. The Spanish-American Iron Co. has established a port for the handling of these ores at Felton, has built a railway 16 miles to the ore-fields, and has opened up deposits for steam-shovel mining. Its expenditures have reached an aggregate of about $6,000,000 in preparation for the handling of these ores. Shipment of the ore to Sparrow's Point, Md., has begun and may be expected to rise to a considerable amount in the near future. The ore reaches this point at a cost per unit of iron considerably lower than Lake Superior ores, and the presence of a low percentage of nickel gives a desirable steel. It is not the purpose of this article to consider these ores from a commercial stand-point, but rather to discuss their-origin. THE late Walter Herd1 in 1929 gave a full description of past and present conditions in No. 2 mine, Springhill, Nova Scotia, developed theories regarding the cause of these bumps and made certain suggestions regarding possible methods of future development. Recapitulating briefly from Mr. Herd's paper, the seam is bituminous coal, averages 9 ft. in thickness and has a well defined parting containing fusain about 14 in. from the roof. This roof coal is somewhat stronger than the rest of the seam and has a tendency to cling to the roof. The pitch of the seam where it is now being worked is about 20°. The first manifestations of bumps began when the room and pillar workings had reached a depth of cover of 1900 ft. and under continuously increasing depth of cover these bumps increased to such an extent, both in number and severity, that in the year 1924 it became apparent that some change in the system of extraction was necessary. After closely studying all the factors involved and benefiting largely by valuable out-side advice obtained by the Provincial Department of Mines of Nova Scotia,2 the system of working was changed from room and pillar to longwall retreating. Mr. Herd's paper described in detail three remarkable bumps in the year 1928 in April, July and October that affected the 5700-ft. and 5900-ft. East levels, the last bump being so severe both in intensity and in extent of damage done that this district was abandoned. The longwall workings to the west of the slope had been stopped in the year 1926 owing to an inbreak of water, coming from the flooded waste of No. 3 seam lying some 400 ft. vertically overhead. This inflow was not excessive, but a large quantity of water being impounded in the old workings it was considered advisable to take the prudent course and not incur the risk of possibly increasing the flow by further working. This district has remained idle ever since.

The activity coefficient of sulfur in Cr-Fe-S melts was determined by measuring the values of Ph3Rh,in equilibrium with such melts. The results showed that chromium has a pronounced negative effect on the activity coefficient of sulfur, which up to about 20 pct Cr may be represented by the equation: log f; = - 0.019 pct Cr It was also found that the influence of chromium was not altered by the presence of appreciable amounts of carbon or silicon. The influence of alloying elements on the activity of sulfur in molten iron has been the subject of many investigations; however the effect of one important alloying element, chromium, has not been reported, and the object of the present investigation was to determine its effect on the activity coefficient of sulfur in liquid Fe-Cr-S alloys both in the absence and in the presence of carbon and/or silicon. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The general method employed consisted of passing mixtures of hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide over the sulfur-containing melt of interest and analyzing the outgoing gas to determine the equilibrium value of which resulted from the reaction shown in Eq. 111. H, (gas) + S (dissolved in melt) = H,S (gas) 111 The activity coefficient of sulfur, fs, was then calculated with Eq. [2] in which K, is the known equilibrium constant of Eq. [I] for dilute solutions of sulfur in iron. Raw materials used in the preparation of the charges included commercial grades of electrolytic iron and chromium and carbon-reduced, acid-treated silicon of 99.9 pct purity. Oxygen in the former presented no problem since it was removed by hydrogen in the normal course of an experiment. Carbon was added in the form of premelted iron-carbon and chromium-carbon master alloys. Sulfur was charged as iron sulfide prepared by first heating powdered iron and sulfur in air in an alumina dish until reaction occurred, and then deoxidizing by melting in a hydrogen atmosphere. Commercially bottled hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide were used after being passed through purification systems containing palladium, "Drierite," and magnesium perchlorate in the case of hydrogen, and "Drierite" alone in the case of hydrogen sulfide. Lamp-grade cylinder argon served as a flushing agent without further purification. Charges weighing from 300 to 500 g were placed in a high-purity alumina crucible of 0250-ml capacity and heated in an argon atmosphere in the induction-heated carbon-tube furnace illustrated in Fig. 1. During heating, a dry hydrogen atmosphere was substituted for argon in order that deoxidation of the charge and flushing out of argon would be accomplished sooner. After the charge melted, a Pt-Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple contained in an alumina protection tube was immersed in the melt, and the desired melt temperature (usually 1600°C) was established. Higher temperatures up to 1760°C were required for some chromium-rich alloys because of their higher melting points, and in these cases a Pt 6 pct Rh-Pt 30 pct Rh thermocouple was used. A laboratory scale cell (approximately 50 amps current) equipped with a fluidized bed cathode was used in a study of the electrodeposition of cobalt from acidified aqueous sulfate solutions The effect of current density (in the range 0.1 to 1 amp/cm2 of diaphragm), cobalt concentration (4 8 to 100 glliter) and catholyte pH (1 35 to 6 2) on current efficiency and energy consumption were determined. This paper deals with equimolar solutions of xanthate and alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromide adsorption on copper, nickel and sphalerite powders. After an exposition of the experimental methods used and the results obtained, a thorough discussion leads to the conclusion that some molecular association between xanthates and CnTAB's does take place in the bulk of the solution as well as at the air/liquid interface. A spectrophotometric study of xanthate solutions alone and their mixtures with equimolar amounts of alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CnTAB) has established the additivity of ultraviolet spectra (190 to 400 mµ) for potassium ethyl xanthate (KEtX) and C12TAB. No obvious effect of C12TAB addition on the decomposition rate of KEtX was observed, the half life of which was established as 29±3 days at 22°C and pH ~ 6. In mixed solutions of longer xanthate homologues (e.g. hexyl and nonyl) and equimolar CnTAB, colloidal precipitates are gradually formed which contain primarily the corresponding xanthate molecules. The kinetics of collector abstraction by copper, nickel and sphalerite powders were studied in 10-5 to 10"3 M solutions of KEtX alone and in equimolar mixtures of KEtX and CI2TAB. Presence of C12TAB caused a two to three fold increase in the amounts of xanthate (equivalent to many monolayers) abstracted by copper and nickel powders (and in their rates of abstraction) but had no effect on the abstraction of xanthate by unactivated sphalerite (equivalent to less than a monolayer). The adsorption of C12TAB itself from the mixed solutions was very low, at most one monolayer only, and was not influenced by the nature of the solid powder used. A change in the rates of abstraction, observed with copper powder, was interpreted as a completion of a multilayer coating (completely enveloping the grains of powder) following which the rate of reaction between solution and substrate becomes controlled by diffusion through this coating. Work of Buckenham and Schulmanl on molecular associations between different collectors has shown unusual synergistic effects in flotation of individual minerals using mixtures of xanthates and alkyl trimethyl ammonium bromides. The objectives of the present work were: 1) to determine whether these molecular associations between the two types of collectors (indicated by strong surface tension lowering in Buckenham and Schulman's work) take place at the air/liquid interface only or in the bulk of solution as well 2) to establish whether different solids adsorb any species from the mixture of these amphipatic molecules preferentially or as molecular complexes 3) to establish whether there are any differences in the kinetics of adsorption. Metallic copper and sphalerite powder were chosen as adsorbents since they represent two extremes since copper readily adsorbs multilayers of xanthate (and is easily floated with ethyl xanthate) while unactivated sphalerite does not appreciably adsorb xanthate but is known to be readily floated by the amine type collectors. PREVIOUS workers1,2 have found evidence of exaggerated grain growth or secondary recrystallization on annealing sponge zirconium at temperatures high in the a, phase field, but no details of the orientation relationship between the secondary grains and "as-recrystallized" matrix were reported. In other hexagonal metals, namely dilute Mg-A13 and Cd-zn4 alloys, secondary recrystallization has been observed in which the secondary grains are related to the primary recrystallized structure by rotations about the c axis. These rotations are thus comparable with the rotations about the (111) axis observed in the secondary recrystallization of fcc metals. In the current work secondary recrystallization has been observed on annealing iodide zirconium at 800°C and the associated changes in crystallographic texture have been examined. The material employed was arc-melted iodide zirconium of the following composition: Impurity O H Fe Hf Pb I Ni C1 A1 ppm by wt 130 5 230 98 23 28 200 39 30 This was received as 0.25-in. plate, and, prior to the annealing studies, was cold-rolled to 0.040 in. Specimens 1 in. sq were chemically polished and annealed for various times at 800°C in a vacuum better than 5x 10-6 Torr. For metallographic examination specimens were first chemically polished and then anodized8 to enhance contrast between the grains when examined under polarized light. Changes in crystallographic orientation associated with the development of secondary grains were followed by (1011) and (0002) pole-figure determinations using a conventional Schulz goniometer in reflection. Filtered Cr Ka radiation was employed and great care was taken to avoid spurious re- sults due to the close proximity of the Bragg angles for the (1011) and (0002) reflections. Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate the change in grain structure on annealing at 800°C. After 24 hr the structure has ceased to be equiaxed due to the development of certain grains in preference to others. It is notable that the secondary grains do not grow to the extent observed in sponge zirconium.1,2 This appears to be due in part to the fact that normal grain growth is inhibited in the less pure sponge zirconium, with the result that the driving force for secondary recrystallization remains high, while at the same time the number of grains able to develop in the presence of the impurities is also smaller. As a consequence, in sponge zirconium those grains that do develop preferentially are able to grow into the fine -grained matrix without impingement, while in iodide zirconium the preferential growth of many grains leads to early impingement. The pole figures determined for specimens annealed for 5 min and 24 hr at 800°C are illustrated respectively in Figs. 3 and 4. These indicate that the dominant feature of the initial recrystallized texture consists of basal planes at an angle of 321/2 deg to the sheet surface, with a (1120) axis lying parallel to the

IT is well known that particles of different sizes are not distributed evenly throughout the average charge in an iron blast furnace. Just how great the disparity in particle size in different parts of a single plane in a furnace may be is indicated by the results of some recent investigations1 conducted by the Bureau of Mines on a furnace operating on Lake ores. The wide variations found in gas velocity, gas composition, and temperature from the periphery to the center of the upper charge column were caused by the great variation in particle size of the raw materials used and were also greatly influenced by the methods of charging. This paper summarizes the results of an investigation of the influence of different methods of charging and of the treatment of raw materials upon the size distribution of the solid particles in the blast furnace. A more complete report will appear later as a Bureau of Mines technical paper.

No one who has visited our Western mining districts, and studied the economical part of the beneficiation of the ores occurring all over that vast extent of country, can underrate the high importance of the above subject. By far the larger number of the districts which contain smelting ores, i.e., argentiferous and auriferous lead, or copper ores, are situated in the Great Basin, that great plateau between the Rocky Mountains on the east, and the Sierra Nevada on the west, almost the whole of which is comprised at present in the boundaries of Nevada, Utah, and part of Arizona. This region is essentially a barren country. The extreme dryness of the atmosphere permits but a scanty vegetation in the plains ; and even in the detached mountain-chains running through it-generally from N. to S., or from N. W. to S. E.-there are no trees found except dwarfed pines and mahogany, at the head of sheltered ravines, and a few cottonwoods and willows, which fringe the insignificant streams, before the water sinks in the arid plains. Nearly all the mountain-chains in this region are rich in silver ores. That class of these ores which is adapted to amalgamation, and rich in silver, has been worked with profit for more than ten years. But before the advent of the transcontinental railways, mining was restricted to these ores alone, and the consumption of fuel could be met with the scanty supply of forest trees in the immediate vicinity of the mining districts. Since, however, the Union and Central Pacific Railroads have brought the Great Basin nearer to the commercial centres of the East and the Pacific coast, thus reducing the expenses of freight and labor materially, other silver deposits, containing poorer ores in greater abundance, have been rapidly taken

OUTSTANDING among the year's events in copper has been the reimposition of an import duty of 4r. per pound in this country which became effective June 21. In consequence of this action by Congress, the Ottawa Empire conference recommended a duty of 2d. per pound equivalent at normal rate of exchange to our 4c. duty, on all copper originating outside of the Empire. Lip to the middle of this year only Russia and Japan had a closed market; the import duty on copper in Russia is 30 per cent ad valoremm and in Japan about 2c. Russia's consumption has always been in excess of production and she has imported from 2(1,000 to 40,000 ton, of copper per annum. Japan, with a production of 6,000 to 7,000 tons per month, has absorbed, in normal times, its production, but during recent: sears has exported varyiug quantities in 1929. 2,200 ton-: in 1930, 2,700 tons, and in 1931. 3,600 ton-. Aside from the-e two countries, the international market has heretofore been free. It and when the British Empire duty become, effective the world's markets will be divided into four unit: 1. Russia and Japan, 2. United States. 3. British Empire. 4. Rest of the world. The world's production at present is rennin it the rate of 930.000 tons per annum. This year's production will be over 1,000,000 tons because the several curtailment did not become effective until the second quarter. consumption will be slightly in excess. Deducting from 30,000 tons Russia's and Japan's production of 121.000 tons, 806,000 tons is left divided a, follows:

At the Philadelphia meeting of the Institute, held in February, 1881,I had the honor of reading a paper on "A New Method of Mapping the Anthracite Coal Fields of Pennsylvania."* At that time the State appropriation for the Second Geological Survey had just expired, and, as a new appropriation was not assured, no detailed plan had been adopted by Professor Lesley, State Geologist, for the practical examination of the mines, and the solution of the geological structure of special localities, or the representation in sections, vertical and columnar, of the general structure of the coal basins and coal beds. I had merely proposed a plan of mapping, as the material for the construction of maps was most available, and it was at that time uncertain what money the Survey would have to enable it to extend the surface and underground explorations, in order to make the examinations complete. After a continuation of the Survey was authorized until January, 1884, by the legislature, in May, 1881, the Anthracite Survey was regularly organized, and a plan adopted for a systematic and exhaustive geological and mine examination of the region. This plan provided for such work, other than that of mapping, as was necessary for a complete and practical geological and mining survey of a coal field. To do any geological work, of however general a character, it was absolutely. necessary that the members of the Survey Corps should obtain unrestricted access to all the mining records of the operators, which have been made with great care and accuracy and at an enormous expense during the past thirty years and more. The unanimous and generous support of the individual and corporate coal operators, of the plan of carrying on the Survey, was promptly assured, on condition that the results should be of such a character as to render them of practical utility to the property-owners and those directly interested. THE etched microstructures of cold-worked alpha brasses, after reduc-tions in excess of about 20 per cent, exhibit dark lines or markings, which have been termed "deformation bands," "etch bands," and "strain markings." The terms will be used synonomously in this report. The markings are similar in their general appearance to etch figures found in cold-worked iron, aluminum and other cubic metals but in certain respects may differ noticeably. At reductions of from about 20 to 50 per cent in brass, they appear as straight dark lines of irregular spacing and at random directions in different grains, but apparently intimately associated with definite crystallographic planes, usually {111}, in each crystal. At higher reductions, the markings on the rolling plane tend to appear in a direction transverse to the rolling direction in all crystals but may bend away at considerable angles, particularly near grain boundaries. Samans,1 on the basis of X-ray and micrographic studies of two single crystals of brass, rolled to a 50 per cent reduction, showed that the lines of deformation were the edges of thin mechanical twins parallel to octahedral planes. Barrett and Levenson2-4 have made comprehensive studies of the deformation of iron and of aluminum. They show that in these two metals the deformation markings originate by division of the original homogeneous crystal into banded areas differing in orientation by an amount that increases with the degree of deformation. The markings thus cannot be twin bands, and Barrett, in a review of this subject,2 attributed Samans' results on brass to an accidental choice of deformation that left the bands in approximately a twinned relationship. On the other hand, Mathewson5 has suggested that in some cases mechanical twinning offers a better rationalization of the coverage of some (111) pole figures of worked brass than the assumption of band rotation into sym-metry positions. Considering next a deformed and annealed alpha brass, the most striking aspect of its microstructure is the multiplicity of twin bands.

Synthetic polycrystals of wustite were reduced ilz H2-H2O mixtures over limited roncentration ranges wiltun the wustite. field and the weight changes were continuously followed with a McBain quartz spiral balance. The reduction was. found to be controlled by a combined surface plus solid-state diffusion reaction. The solid-state diffusion had an activation energy of 38 kcal. Self--diflusioities of iron decreased with itzcreasing vacancy concentration. The activation energy of. the surface reaction runs different tor- different samples. The surface reaction-rate constan increased with increasirzg vacancy concentration. THE reduction of the oxides of iron has been studied for many years. Edstroem' has summarized the early work and has provided much information on the reduction of magnetite and hematite by hydrogen and carbon monoxide. More recent summaries are those by smeltzer2 and Themelis and Gauvin.3 Most investigators have reported that the iron metal which forms the outer layer during gaseous reduction is rather porous. According to Kohl and Engel14 the formation of such a porous iron layer depends on the properties of the underlying wiistite layer, on the reaction of the gas with the wustite surface, and on the transport of matter through the wustite layer. McKewan, Quets, Wadsworth, and Lewis, and Knacke 10 have found that, if a porous iron layer is formed, a surface reaction between gas and wustite at the bottom of the pores controls the rate of reaction. Seth and ROSS 11 and Warner 12 have pointed out that the influence of the gaseous pore diffusion through the porous iron layer cannot be neglected. It has further been shown that the wiistite layer formed during reduction is dense and that transport of matter across the layer occurs only by solid-state diffusion of iron ions.13,14 The solid-state diffusion rates observed by Edstroem and Bitsianis 14 and the surface reaction rates observed by Quets eta1.' show that an interaction of the two steps in controlling the reaction rate has to be considered. In this investigation the reduction of wustite was studied with respect to the interaction of the two steps, isolated from any other effects, by reducing wustite within the wustite field from higher to lower oxygen concentrations with H2-H2O gas mixtures. A similar study with CO-CO2 mixtures has been performed by Levin and wagner.15 Fused synthetic wustite polycrystals were reduced in steps of 0.4 wt pct from 24.4 to 23.2 wt pct 0 and over a temperature range from 700" to 1050°C. A few tests were also conducted with reduction steps from 24.4 to 23.6 wt pct 0 and 24.5 to 23.2 wtpct0. The Fe-O phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1 where the composition of the gas phase in equilibrium with the condensed phases is plotted as pct H2 vs the temperature. A careful study of the literature led to the conclusion that the fully drawn equicomposition curves (in wt pct O) in the wustite field used by Edstroem 1,16 and other authors needed some correction. Based on results by Darken and Gurry17 (shown as open circles) and on some of our own data, four corrected curves for 23.2, 23.6, 24.0, and 24.4 wt pct O were calculated (drawn as dashed lines in Fig. 1) which should replace the fully drawn equicomposition curves. MATERIALS AND APPARATUS Materials and Specimen Preparation. Wustite was prepared from iron sulfate (Fisher Scientific Co., New York) which had a purity of over 99.92 pct, with small amounts of manganese, copper, and zinc adding up to 0.03 pct. From the aqueous solution iron oxalate was precipitated and decomposed to magnetite according to Economos. 18 The magnetite powder was pressed into cylinders and sintered in vacuum at 900°C for several hours. The sintered compacts were placed in a platinum crucible of 2.5 cm diam which was fitted into a high-purity alumina crucible and then inserted into the center of the graphite heating element of an electric resistance furnace.lg The furnace was evacuated to below 1 p Hg and the magnetite sample was slowly heated. THERE are a number of different types of power plants. Some use coal to generate steam, others use oil or gas either in the form of steam or internal combustion equipment, while still others avail themselves of water power as a source of energy. A general comparison of the relative power production with different sources of energy in the United States, for several different years is set up in Table 1. This table shows that coal was used to generate 85.6 per cent of the total heat power requirements of 1909, and only 59.2 per cent of the 1930 requirements. The increasing proportion of modern heat energy generated by the use of fuel other than coal is apparent. If coal is to maintain its importance as a source of heat energy, the necessity for its improved perform-ance, in which preparation plays an -important part, cannot be stressed too strongly.

In the Carlsbad area potash is dry-mined and wet-concentrated. Wet concentration involves recircu-lation of saturated brines, with resultant difficulties of brine disposal and inherent losses in recovery through solution of the KCl. A dry beneficiation process for potash minerals would offer many advantages over present methods. International Minerals & Chemical Corp. has been working on development of a dry process for some time. This article is a progress report. Potash ores available in this country are largely mixtures of halite and sylvite contaminated with slimes and often with many sulfate and magnesium minerals. Electrostatic concentration of KCl when the contaminating minerals are in low percentage has been accomplished. Continuous production of better than 60 pct K2O concentrate from high potassium sulfate ores has not been demonstrated at the present time. Laboratory Procedure: Laboratory work on electrostatic beneficiation of potash minerals has been carried out using both pure crystals and mined ore. Electrostatic separation of the two main components of potash ore, sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), is accomplished by first heat-treating the ore to allow for electric charging of the particles. Preferential exchange of' electrical charges between different mineral particles through surface contact is the principal mechanism involved. After proper conditioning of the particle surfaces, the oppositely charged minerals are dropped vertically into a horizontal electric field having a field gradient from about 5000 to 15,000 v per in. The particles are free-falling in the field. A suitable power supply is used to produce the proper total voltage for the electric field. Total required voltage is, of course, a function of electrode spacing. A typical electrode arrangement with power supply is shown in Fig. 1. In general, the total voltage on any system is 75,000 to 90,000 v. Power consumption is negligible, as leakage at insulators and corona discharge are the main losses in the system. Optimum preheat temperatures for pure material components generally are not the same as for mined minerals. Fig. 2 shows clearly that maximum recovery on a 50 pct pure KCl, 50 pct pure NaCl mixture occurs at a preheat temperature of about 600°F. In this test the preheat mixture was allowed to cool to about 225°F before dropping through the electric field. The optimum temperature for sep- aration is practically never the optimum temperature of preheat. Optimum separation for mined Carlsbad potash ores occurs when a preheat temperature closer to 900°F is used, as shown by Fig. 3, which plots percent sylvite (KCl) in the concentrate and tails as a function of preheat temperatures. Here again the ore was allowed to cool to about 225°F before separation. It should be noted that efficiency of separation increases continuously with increasing preheat temperatures until incipient fusion of the ore takes place at about 950°F. The increase in optimum preheat temperature for Carlsbad ores over the pure minerals can be traced to the effect of the clay slimes intimately associated with the mined potash. If the slimes associated with the ore are removed by washing with alcohol or other non-aqueous material, the necessity of preheating to the high temperature is removed. This temperature range has been proved critical within these limits during continuous pilot plant operation. Concentrate and tailings grade and optimum recovery also are functions of the temperature of the potash mineral particles during separation in the electric field. Fig. 4 presents data indicating that feed to the rougher pass should range between 150°F and 275°F for best results. It has been found by subsequent pilot plant work that these temperatures can be maintained in actual operation.

THERMAL expansion of rhenium data have been reported by Agte et al.,&apos; and Medoff and cadoff,&apos; respectively, while the linear expansion coefficient was determined by Sims et Al.3 Denoting expansion coefficients parallel and at right angle to c axis by all and Al respectively, their weighted mean should be equal to dilatometric linear coefficient of a random polycrystalline specimen. The values reported for these coefficients are tabulated below: Since these values are in poor agreement, and because of anomalous expansion behavior observed in titanium 4 and chromium, a rede termination of the axial expansion was carried out. A Unicam 19-cm-diam high-temperature camera was used, with unfiltered CuK radiation. Camera calibration was carried out using at Pt wire standarde at temperatures up to 1100oC, the variation between indicated and true temperature being within the experimental error (estimated at <3oC) above 750o C. Rhenium Johnson Matthey spectrographic standard) was vacuum annealed at 1000 oC prior to X-ray diffraction experiments. Lattice parameters were obtained by least-squares solution using the reflec- tions (1232), (1015), (2024), and (3030) for all the patterns, and the additional reflection (2133) for higher temperature (400°C and above) patterns. The relative expansion data obtained are shown in Fig. 1, lengths of the vertical bars indicating the spread in the parameter values obtained by using various combinations of three spacings from the four or five measured. The data calculated from the equation of Ref. 2 are included for comparison purposes. Several specimens were used to obtain the above data, neither of them showing a significant parameter change after completion of the high temperature runs. Some parameter data and the corresponding expansion coefficients between 25 oC and the measurement temperature are tabulated below. The comparison of the present data with those previously reported shows reasonable agreement with the results of Medoff and cadoff2 within the temperature range covered by them (up to 1000 oC). The a values are appreciably higher throughout most of the investigated temperature range. The basal expansion is—in agreement with their findings—appreciably higher than that in the direction of hexagonal axis. The expansion coefficient, al, however, decreases rather more slowly with temperature than previously reported. The expansion along the c axis up to nearly 1000°C appears in excellent agreement. However, at higher temperatures there is a marked deviation towards higher expansion, reproducible between different specimens. Furthermore, there seems to be some irregularity in the variation of all with temperature, the apparent local minimum and maximum values at 510o and 1024o C, Table II, being well outside the experimental error limits. It must be stressed that the apparent discontinuity in the c parameter expansion is still insufficient to account for the expansion value reported by Agte et al.&apos; since a total expansion of close to 2 pct would

ONE of the earliest problems in the life of any community is the provision of an adequate supply of water sufficiently free from all types of contamination to be suitable for domestic purposes. Generally speaking, the location of most communities is determined to a great extent by the availability of an adequate supply of satisfactory water. For a mining camp, that consideration cannot be foremost. Here, the ore takes first place, and the men who mine it must do the best they can under the existing conditions. If there is no local source of water, it must be brought from some distant source or must be found by sinking shafts or drilling wells. Fortunate indeed is the mining company that discovers a commercially valuable ore deposit beside a never failing creek full of pure water, with sufficient water rights available, because the acquisition of water in any other manner nearly always involves not only a considerable period of time but the expenditure of considerable money. The experience of Climax Molybdenum Co. demonstrates the measures that sometimes are necessary in order to provide a suitable supply of water. The Climax mine and mill are on the Continental Divide, about 13 miles northeast of Leadville. The elevation of the domestic part of the camp varies from a minimum of 11,320 ft. to a maximum of approximately 11,550 ft. above sea level, and, as is common at such altitudes, the near-by streams that might be suitable for a water supply are small and intermittent, usually flowing only during the summer months. The only streams of any size in the immediate vicinity of Climax are the Ten Mile and Arkansas Rivers. The headwaters of Ten Mile River are on the Company&apos;s property, and its water has been used for the domestic supply. The headwaters of the Arkansas River are about 2 miles distant and have not been used as a source of supply by the company. During the past 11 years of the production of molybdenum at-Climax, the number of families living there has increased from about 45 to 283, and the population has increased from about 200 to 1200 persons. Consequently, the capacity of the water-treatment facilities, and the amount of water available, had to be increased to meet the requirements of the camp. As early as 1932 it was recognized that the water in Ten Mile River would not continue to be adequate for domestic purposes and after considerable discussion it was decided to drive a drift through the major fault in an effort to find additional water. This drift was completed in 1935 and tapped sufficient water to make the supply adequate. This water was treated in a tank underground, where lime was added, and was then piped into the domestic supply lines. At about the time this line was completed, the presence of fluorine in harmful concentrations was discovered in the water. This problem was submitted to the International Filter Co. and in November 1937 a plant of its design was put in operation for treating the water to remove the fluorine. This plant proved entirely successful,
