The consideration of alloying elements for aluminum has led to a series of investigations of the equilibrium relations between aluminum and those alloying elements. Therefore, the aluminum end of the aluminum-antimony diagram has been studied. The general form of the aluminum-antimony equilibrium diagram has been worked out by Campbell and Mathewsi and by Tammann.2 Canlpbell and mathews described principally the beginning of solidification. They found the curve of beginning of solidification rising gradually from the melting point of pure alunlinum to a maximum at about 67 per cent. aluminum. After a slight lowering of the curve at a little greater antimony concentration the curve again rises to a maximum at 18.4 per cent. aluminum, which corresponds to the compound AISb. The curve then drops to the melting point of pure antimony. Tamrriarln explained the maximum occurring at about 67 per cent. aluminum as the result of the slow formation of the single compound AISb. The space lattice of the compound AISb, according to Owen and Preaton,³ is face-centered cubic, the antimony atoms being intermeshed with an identical aluminum lattice. Very little, if any, work has been done on aluminum alloys containing small amounts of antimony. The Present Investigation It has been the purpose of this investigation to determine the solid solubility of antimony in aluminum and also to investigate the eutectic temperature and concentration. The experimental work has been carried out in a manner similar to that described in a previous paper4 from this laboratory.

It has been shown that grain-boundary migration during high-temperature creep can reduce or even prevent the formation of intercrystalline voids, giving a considerable increase in ductility.' A similar observation has been made in a recent investigation of the creep properties of various grades of nickel and nickel alloys. The results can be illustrated by the observations made on: a) Pure vacuum-cast nickel (99.993 pct Ni) b) Impure vacuum-cast nickel (99.97 pct Ni) c) Pure nickel containing internal voids (produced by a process of intering). d) A substitutional solid solution alloy of pure nickel containing 1.16 pct Sn. All the materials were given a high-temperature anneal (>850°C) to produce a stable grain size of 7 to 10 grains per linear mm. The apparatus and techniques used to obtain the present results have been described elsewhere.' In this series, grain growth was observed only in the highest-purity, vacuum-cast metal. Thus we may consider that in the other materials grain-boundary migration was prevented by either preexisting voids or solute atoms. With the continued deep drilling of today, increasing numbers of high pressure and high temperature gas-condensate reservoirs are being discovered. Correspondingly, the ranges of properties of gas-condensate reservoir fluids are also being increased. The literature1*'." contains several excellent reviews of the property ranges in presently known condensate reservoirs. When one examines these property ranges, it becomes apparent that the need for reliable data is great if the engineer is to evaluate properly or appraise a gas-condensate reservoir. It is the purpose of this paper to present phase-behavior data that will point out some of the important variables that influence recovery from gas-condensate reservoirs produced by pressure depletion. All these variables may be resolved into two major categories: the hydroc:arbon composition of the reservoir fluid and the physical properties of the reservoir. But the variables which we will consider are those which are usually determined from well tests shortly after discovery and are, consequently, readily available to the engineer. They are as follows: (1) the producing separator gas-stock-tank liquid ratio, (2) stock-tank liquid gravity, and (3) reservoir temperature. Laboratory depletion studies have been performed on several reservoir fluids to illustrate the effect of changes in the cronsidered variables upon ultimate recoveries. The deviation factors, Z, of a series of reservoir fluids were determined experimentally to illustrate their order of magnitude and their effect upon the calculation of in-place reserves existing at high pressurcs and temperatures. The procedures followed in conjunction with the performance of these studies and their associated calculations are illustrated in Fig. 1. For the purpose of this paper, the depletion recoveries are expressed only in terms of pcr cent of initial stock-tank liquid, with the abandonment pressure assumed to be 500 psig. VARIATION OF RECOVERY WITH INITIAL PRODUCING SEPARATOR GAS-STOCK-TANK LIQUID RATIO The producing separator gas-stock-tank liquid ratio has long been one of the principal criteria in assumptions and generalized correlations' used for the estimation of ultimate recovery from gas-condensate reservoirs. Fig. 2 presents a plot of the cumulative recovery of stock-tank liquid at abandonment as a function of the initial producing separator gas-stock-tank liquid ratio. The graphical illustration represents the results of 44 laboratory depletion studies performed on actual gas-condensate fluids. These data are presented not only to illustrate the general trend of ultimate recovery increase with initial producing ratio increase but to emphasize the considerable variation in possible recovery at any given producing ratio. Table 1 presents the properties of two actual reservoir fluids chosen to illustrate the approximate extremities of producing ratios for gas-condensate systems. The fluids designated as A and B exhibited initial producing ratios of 3,400 and 114,000 scf/bbl, respectively. Fig. 3 presents a graphical comparison of the cumulative stock-tank liquid recoveries, calculated from the well-stream compositions and produced volumes for each fluid during depletion. It is to be noted that Fluid A exhibited a recovery of only 16.5 per cent when produced to an assumed abandonment pressure of 500 psig while the corresponding recovery for Fluid B was calculated to be 62.2 per cent. THE application of the cyanide process to complex sulphide ores for the extraction of their bold and silver is no longer a novelty, but, as an example showing modern tendencies in this direction, the following description of the new milling process at the Lucky-Tiger mine is offered: The extraordinary richness of the ore in the upper workings of this mine made any thought of milling in its early hays seen unnecessary. Its location in an almost inaccessible part of the rugged mountains just south of the Arizona boundary-line, and 60 miles from the town of Douglas, made the expense of bringing in machinery and supplies a very serious consideration. But, after the property had been shipping high-grade ore on mule-back for a few years, there remained in the mine a considerable tonnage of vein-matter that was too low in value to ship, but which it was thought could be milled near the mine at a profit. The first milling-experiment consisted in the installation of Nissen stamps in conjunction with concentrating-tables and Frue vanners, but, as the ore from the upper workings contained most of its silver in the form of cerargyrite, this type of mill was not successful. The proximity of the mine to the great copper-concentrating mills of Cananea and Moctezuma naturally made the influence of copper-milling, ideas felt in the company's next installation. At considerable expense a stage-crushing concentrating-mill, with a capacity of 100 tons per day, was built. This mill was modeled along the lines of the most approved practice in copper-concentrators at that time, the main idea being that crushing by stages in rolls was necessary in order to prevent losses from ?sliming." (Canal Zone Meeting, November, 1910.) THE death of Professor Blake removes the oldest of American economic geologists and mining engineers, and deprives this Institute of one of its, earliest and most illustrious members. To many of us it brings a personal loss also, the loss of a friend. William Phipps Blake was born June 21, 1826, in New York City. -His father, Elihu Blake, was a surgeon-dentist of eminence, a direct descendant of William Blake, who settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony about 1630. He was prepared for college at private schools in New York, and entered the Sheffield School of Yale, where he was graduated as Ph.B. in the chemical course, class of 1852, the first graduating-class of the institution. In the same year he became chemist and mineralogist of the New Jersey Zinc Co., and chemist of chemical works at Baltimore, Md. In 1853, lie started the Department of Mineralogy of the World's Fair at New York City. In 1854, 1855 and 1856, he was mineralogist and geologist of the United States Pacific Railroad Surveys of Williamson, Pope, and Whipple, and for the War Department at Washington. His writings, during this period comprise reports on the geology and mineralogy of California and other parts of the Southwest, and constitute well nigh the earliest scientific accounts of the regions described. One of them. was a translation of the Resume and Field Notes of Jules Marcou, of Whipple's expedition. From 1856 to 1859, he was engaged in explorations of the geology and mineral deposits of North Carolina, :and other parts of the country. In 1859, he became editor and proprietor of The Mining Magazine. This was a monthly periodical, founded in 1853 by W. J. Tenny, who conducted it until 1858, when it passed into the hands of Thomas McElrath, a New York publisher, and appeared in May of that year as The Mining and Statistic Magazine, with the name of

Drilling for oil and gas in Arkansas in 1934 showed more activity than in any year since 1929; with a total of 96 completions, including 36 oil wells, 1 gas well and 59 dry holes. Of the producers, the lone gas well and 35 oil wells were in old fields, and one wildcat producer opened a new pool. Of the dry holes, 16 were in or near fields and 43 were wildcats. The total reported initial daily production of the oil wells was 9013 bbl., averaging 252 bbl. per well. Active drilling operations numbered 65 at the close of the year, compared with 26 at the beginning.

A unique method of measuring weight loss as a function 3 of time, with a sensitivity of 10-5 grams, while leaching copper minerals with a flowing acid leach solution has been developed. Kinetic results obtained coupled with visual and microprobe analyses show topochemical reaction for the leaching of chrysocolla with sulfuric acid. The kinetics follow a shrinking core model and show ion diffusion through a product layer, chemical reaction at the unreacted core interface and mass transfer through the boundary layer as being important.

Carlisle: An old friend and good friend, Alan Bateman, is the Silliman Professor of Geology Emeritus at Yale and editor of the Journal of Economic Geology. Now, Alan, let's start off by telling us something about how you became interested in copper. Bateman: Well, after I left Yale in 1913, I was appointed one of the field members of the Secondary Enrichment Investigation. We spent three years in the field studying all the copper deposits of North America, trying to find out how secondary copper enrichment took place. As part of this investigation, I went up to Kennecott, Alaska, in 1916. After the trip I was asked by the president of the company to become consulting geologist to them. I accepted his offer, and to this day I'm still consulting geologist to the Kennecott Copper Corp. Up at Kennecott, there were both Henry Krumb and my good friend Henry DeWitt Smith, who was general superintendent. He and I had been together at Yale, and I had ushered at his wedding. Interestingly enough, Henry took his bride to Alaska and I took mine there two months later. My assistant was Don McLaughlin, and I think that was his first experience in a mining camp. We published a paper on Kennecott together and cemented a friendship lasting to this day.

THE several studies concerned with the annealing of thin nickel films have largely been restricted to films of a single thickness.1-4 It is well-known, however, that both physical and mechanical properties depend upon film thickness.5, 6 The strength-thickness relations found in vapor-deposited nickel films in the annealed and as-deposited states, as an example, are at least partially due to the density and arrangement of imperfections within the films.7, 8 For these reasons, the annealing characteristics of thin nickel films as a function of thickness were investigated. Electrical resistance was chosen to monitor annealing behavior since resistance changes are partially dependent upon defect structure. In addition, the equations predicting film resistivity as a function of thickness are already available.9, 10 Further advantages afforded by electrical-resistance measurements are its adaption to continuous readings during annealing and its relative simplicity. Nickel films were vapor-deposited, at average rates of 60Å per sec, on Vycor substrates held at room temperature in vacuums of about 10-5 torr. Afterwards, deposition-thickness measurements were made using a multiple-beam interferometric technique. A more detailed description of deposition procedures and the interferometer appear elsewhere.7, 8 The four-probe method was employed in measuring electrical resistance since this technique measures film resistance without contributions from lead wires and contacts. Resistance measurements were made before, during, and after annealing to temperatures of 700°C under vacuums of approximately 10-4 torr. Measurements were made every 25°C or more often when necessitated by unusual resistance changes. Cooling and heating rates were maintained at approximately 5°C per min. GENERAL GEOLOGY OF THE LAKE SUPERIOR IRON-BEARING AND COPPER-BEARING SERIES. THE geology of the Lake Superior region is of general interest, both from an economic and a scientific standpoint. The presence of large and rich iron- and copper-deposits has made a knowledge of the geology of the region necessary for purposes of exploitation and exploration. The ores of the region are contained in rocks of pre-Cambrian age, 'pith for most of the country up to recent years have usually been referred to as « crystalline schists " or " crystalline complex;" and regarded principally as metamorphosed basement-unit upon which the sedimentary rocks, beginning with the Paleozoic, were laid down. In the Lake Superior re¬gion this pre-Cambrian complex presents an unusual variety of rocks with determinable relations. It has been possible, with the large expenditures which-the magnitude of the iron-mining industry warrants, to work out their stratigraphy to a larger extent than has been possible in almost any other area of pre-Cambrian rocks. The real complexity of Lake Superior geology, the confusion of names and the multiplicity of reports covering small parts of the region, are such that interested persons, other than. geologists directly engaged in the work, may well hesitate to attempt to comprehend the geology of the region as a whole. The following paper is a somewhat elementary outline of the geology of the Lake Superior region with special reference to new developments not yet covered in published reports. Geological information concerning the region has been gath¬ered by mining companies, and by the geological surveys of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ontario, Canada, and the United States.. Perhaps in no other part of the country have the mining men themselves spent such large sums in purely geological work. This has made possible the publication of ,reports and maps by the State and Government surveys in much less time and at far less cost than would have been otherwise possible. The. U. S. AS a new departure the annual business meeting was held at 4 p. m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16, instead of in the morning, as previously. The retiring President, Robert E. Tally, called the meeting to order and briefly spoke of the large measure of success that had been attained in balancing the budget of the Institute in 1931, so that, although receipts had declined over $26,000 compared to the previous year, expenditures had come within $3,000 of income. He referred in complimentary ,terms to the work of the committees on Membership, Admissions, Papers and Publications, and MINING AND METALLURGY, from which more would be heard late:. He also announced that a large and important committee on economics has been under consideration, and will be announced later. As an evidence of growth it was noted that a new Division, Mineral Industry Education, had been organized just an hour previously.

Possible interactions of the perfect dislocations of six slip systems or the c dislocation with the (10i2f (ioii), {ioIi}(ioiZ), {1122}(1123), and {1121}(ii26) type twins in hcp metals have been analyzed from the crystallographic and the energetic points of view. Twenty-six distinct types of possible interactions were identified, and those selected based on crystallographic constraints were examined for their energetic feasibilities by use of the anisotropic energy factors. No long-range elastic interaction exists for a dislocation when its Burgers vector is parallel to the twin interface. Under a suitable applied stress, a screw dislocation can cross slip at the twin interface. For basal mixed dislocations in cadmium and zinc, the interaction with {1012} twins is found to be attractive, indicating that incorporation of these dislocations into the twins is energetically feasible and that twin growth will result. On the other hand, the interaction between both basal and Prism mixed dislocations and the {1012} and (1121) twins is found to be repulsive in Mg, Co, Re, Zr, Ti, Hf, and Be. This indicates that under an applied stress a local stress concentration will develop due to a dislocation pileup at the interface, which may result in a site for either the nucleation of other twins or the formation of a crack, depending on the cleavage strength. WHEN a metal undergoes plastic deformation, a certain configuration of slip dislocations will result in a state of dislocation pileup against an obstacle. The stress concentration thus developed may enhance the process of twin nucleation and also twin growth. Furthermore, once formed and dispersed in the crystal, twins can act as effective barriers against slip dislocations. The degree of such mutual influence or interrelation between slip and twinning is generally known to be pronounced in the case of hcp, metals. It is also known that deformation by twinning occurs more commonly in hexagonal metals than in cubic metals. In fact, under suitable stress states, all hexagonal metals exhibit {1012) <1011> type twinning.&apos; In addition to this common type, deformation by (1151) <1126> type twinning occurs in zirconium, titanium, and rhenium, which show remarkable ductility.&apos; The importance of twinning during general deformation to the ductility of hcp polycrystals has been briefly discussed in recent review works.2&apos;3 The purpose of this paper is to analyze the interaction between slip dislocations and twins in the hcp structure and to discuss the nucleation and growth processes of twinning and the role of twinning in the <"°" noil) o, 1/3[112O] (OOO2) 1/3[1123] Fig. l—-Slip systems in hcp structure. ductility of hexagonal metals. The problem will be discussed from the geometric and the energetic points of view in a manner similar to that of the previous work on zinc.4 Since hcp crystals deform by several slip and twin systems, numerous interactions result as possibilities. The Burgers vectors of six slip systems and the c dislocation shown in Fig. 1 and the four twin systems listed in Table I are considered here. A complete tabulation of the possible interactions is followed by discussion of those that are more likely to occur on the basis of crystallographic constraints and energetic considerations. 1) CRYSTALLOGRAPHY OF TWINNING The crystallographic elements, K1, K2, n1, and n2, for the four compound twin systems are now well established.= A unit cell with the base vectors n1, and n2 is shown in Fig. 2 for each twin system. The unit cell before twinning is shown in solid line, and the corresponding unit cell after twinning is shown in dashed line. Also shown in Fig. 2 are the following crystallographic parameters: S is the plane of shear, d the interspacing of the twin habit planes K1,Ø Iis the acute angle between n1, and n 2, e is a numerical factor, and q is the number of K, lattice planes intersected by 17&apos;. These parameters can be expressed in terms of the axial ratio, y = c/a, as listed in Table 11. The macroscopic shear strain of twinning, s, and the magnitude of a "unit twin dis-l~cation,"4 bt, are also expressed in terms of y and given in Table 11. In Table 11, K1 and q1 are given in both Miller-Bravais and Miller indices. In double lattice structures, shuffling of atoms in addition to a homogeneous shear of the lattice is generally required if the original crystal structure is to be restored after twinning. Preheating Feature of Leyner Oil Furnace for Heating Drill Steel The No. 3 Leyner oil-burning furnace, used for heating drill steel, is now made with a preheating chamber. By this addition it is claimed that the heating capacity and, effeciency of the furnace are increased about 50 per cent. This preheater is a section which fits between the body and cover of the furnace of the old design. It may be attached to an old furnace by simply changing a few bolts. Referring to the illustration, it will be seen that the lower chamber is used for the final heating and the upper one for preheating. The type of burner now furnished with this furnace is suitable for either high- or low-pressure air. It hats merely to be throttled for high pressures and when this is done, it, is as efficient as burners designed especially for high pressures and eliminates the noise common to such burners. This furnace burns petroleum or any of its oils, such a, gasoline, kerosene, distillate, etc. Oil heating has many advantages. The steel cannot be injured by absorbing injurious elements such as sulphur, phosphorus or other impurities which :ire present in nearly all coals, nor from unequal heating since the flame imparts a uniform temperature; further, o lie steel is in full view of the operator at all times.

IN reviewing the design of the ore haulage system for the Morenci project, the reader should bear in mind that the railroad and its equpiment cannot be considered as an independent railroad provided only for the purpose of transporting ore from one point to another, but as an integral part of the operation which begins at the electric shovels loading ore at the mine, and ends where the ore, after having been crushed in the primary crushing plant, is deposited in the bins at the secondary crushing plant. Obviously then, the problem consisted of designing a system that would function to the best possible advantage in complete co-ordination with the other units.

THE geologic structure of the Idaho phosphate field has an important bearing on the classifica-tion and the exploitation of the lands that contain phosphate. Maps and structure sections1 recently made available show that the phosphate is mainly preserved in downfolded or downfaulted areas. Since the phos- phate beds are generally rather soft and lie between harder and thicker formations they have been forced to adjust themselves to these formations during epochs of disturbance of the earth&apos;s crust, so that they are frequently affected by minor folds and by faults which may help exploitation by producing undue thickness at certain places or may hinder it by cutting out the phosphate at other places where according to expecta-tion it should be present. A particularly important structural feature which affects both the distribution and the exploitation of the phosphate beds is the great Bannock overthrust by which one or more slices or blocks of the earth&apos;s crust have been pushed over other blocks like ice cakes on a pond. Thus in this region a great flap of folded rocks lies across other rock structures for a distance of approximately 35 miles. Most of the commercially accessible phosphate deposits, shown in the maps that accompany the report cited, are in this flap, which con-stitutes the upper block of the overthrust. In some places, however, the phosphate in the lower block is also accessible. In both blocks post-phosphate rocks exposed at the surface here and there indicate that phos-phate beds may lie at greater or less depth below. The presence of the Bannock overthrust beneath much of the area reported is known by the occurrence of windows in the upper block both within the quadrangles mapped and in areas farther west. The portions of the lower block exposed in these windows show stratigraphic dis-cordance with the surrounding formations. The depth of the fault plane at most places, however, can be told only by drilling or actual mining. Some of the folds in the upper block are relatively deep and it seems fairly certain that the phosphate that may originally have been present in their deeper parts has been removed by thrust faulting. The estimates of phosphate reserves in folds liable to be affected by the Bannock overthrust may therefore need ultimate revision depending on the depth of this fault plane, as it may subsequently be ascertained.
