W. E. Horst—In regard to the flotation rate being described as "first orcler" for flotation of quartz particles below 65 p in size (or any size studied in this work) in this paper, it appears that the authors' conception of rate equations is not in agreement with cited references. A first order rate equation has as one of its forms the following: a In.=a/a-x=kt where a = initial concentration, a—x = concentration at time t, t = time, and k = constant. The constant, k, has the dimension of reciprocal time which is similar to the specific flotation rate, Q. described by Eq. 2 in the authors' article, as has been previously discussed by Schumann (Ref. 1 of original article). The plotted data presented in Fig. 4 of the article utilizes the specific flotation rate, Q (min.'); however, there is not adequate data given to indicate the order of the rate equation which describes the flotation behavior of the quartz system studied. Results from the experimental work indicate that the relationship between rate of flotation (grams per minute) and cell concentration (provided the percent solids in the flotation cell is less than 5.2 pct and the particle size is less than 65 p) is described by an equation of the first order (R, = k c+", n being equal to 1 in this size range) and the use of the first order rate equation does not apply. Similarly the relationship for other particle size ranges studied is expressed by equations of the second or third order depending on the magnitude of n. T. M. Morris—The authors are to be commended for the experiments which they performed. As they state in their discussion the concentration of collector ion In solution did change with change in concentration of solids in the flotation cell. Since for a given slze of particle, flotation rate increases with concentration of collector until a maximum is reached, the effect of concentration of particles in their experiments was to vary the concentration of collector ions. A collector concentration which insures maximum supporting angle for all particles eliminates the unequal effect of collector concentration on various sized particles and the effect of size of particles and concentration of particles upon flotation rate could be more clearly assessed. I believe that if the authors had increased the concentration of collector to an amount sufficient to attain a maximum supporting angle for all particles they would find that the specific flotation rate of particles coarser than 65 p would be constant with change in the concentration of solids in the flotation cell, and that a first order rate would apply to the + 65 as well as to the —65 p sizes. It might also be discovered when this change in collector concentration was made that the maximum specific rate constant would be shifted toward a coarser fraction than when starvation quantities of collector are used since this practice favors the fine particles and penalizes the coarse particles. P. L. de Bruyn and H. J. Modi (authors' reply)—The authors wish to thank Professor Morris for his kind remarks and for mentioning the influence of equilibrium collector concentration on flotation rate. With a collector concentration sufficient to insure maximum supporting angle for all particles, a first order rate equation may indeed be found to be generally applicable irrespective of size. Such a concentration would, however, lead to 100 pct recovery of the fine particles and consequently defeat the essential objective of the investigation to derive the maximum information on flotation kinetics. To establish absolutely the validity of any single rate equation for a given size range, the ideal method would be to work with a feed consisting solely of particles of that size range. Use of such a closely sized feed would also eliminate the possibility of the interfering effect of different sizes upon one another. The authors do not believe that increasing the collector concentration would shift the maximum specific flotation rate (Q) towards a coarser fraction. Experimentation showed Q to be independent of solids concentration for all particles up to 65 µ in size, whereas the maximum value of Q was obtained in the range 37 to 10 p. Professor Morris contends that the addition of starvation quantities of collector favors fine particles at the expense of coarse particles, but the reason for this is not entirely clear to the authors. The comments by Mr. W. E. Horst are concerned only with the concept of the term "first order rate equation." According to the usage of this term in chemical kinetics, time is an important variable, as is shown in the equation quoted by Mr. Horst. All the experimental results reported by the authors were obtained under steady state continuous operations when the rate of flotation is independent of time. To be consistent with the common usage of the "first order rate equation," it would be more satisfactory to state that under certain conditions the experimental results show that the relation between flotation rate and pulp density is an equation of the first order.

International Minerals & Chemical Corp. (Canada) Ltd. is presently exploiting by underground mining a potash-rich zone in the middle Devonian Prairie Evaporite formation near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. Of the three main potash-bearing horizons denoted by Goudie as zones 1, 2 and 3 only the 1ower. two are present at Esterhazy and mining is confined to the lower or zone 1 horizon. The area in which the evaporites were deposited, although flanked on the west by a zone of geosynclinal deposition and tectonic activity, has been subjected to only very gentle epeirogenic activity. The sylvinite ore is coarsely crystalline and occurs in well-defined beds. The halite, sylvite and insoluble content of the ore bears a direct relationship to the lithological units, but the carnallite cuts across the beds. Local concentrations of salt produce blank spots in the ore horizon. Some of these appear to be salt-filled, post-ore channels and cracks while others have been formed by brines emanating upward from below the ore. INTRODUCTION International Minerals & Chemical Corporation (Canada) Ltd. is operating an underground potash mine near the town of Esterhazy in eastern Saskatchewan. The deposit was discovered by IMC in 1955. Subsequent drilling outlined extensive high-grade reserves, and in 1957 shaft sinking and plant construction began. Production from Yarbo No. 1 Shaft commenced in September, 1962 and quickly reached the initial capacity of one million tons of muriate product per year. Production is currently being expanded to 1.6 million tpy. The single mining level is 3140 ft below the surface at No. 1 Shaft. GENERAL GEOLOGY The Esterhazy district lies within the Interior Plains region of Canada and on the northeast rim of the Williston Basin (Fig. 1). Average dip of the rock formations in this area is about 40 ft per mile to the southwest. The potash ore occurs in the Prairie Evaporite formation of the Middle-Devonian Elk Point Group. The Prairie Evaporites are overlain by 3000 ft of Paleozoic shales and limestones and by Jurassic and Cretaceous sandstones and shales (Fig. 2).

Measurements have been made of the rate of capture of single particles of strongly hydrophobic, surface-methylated, quartz, of sizes ranging from 12 to 40 µm diam., by single rising bubbles of diam. 0.5 to 1.1mm. The results agree closely with the theoretically calculated hydrodynamic collision rates, indicating that, in this system, every collision results in capture and retention of a particle.

Although prediction of failure of rocks may be ultimately possible without knowing in detail how failure occurs, understanding of this process is certainly of fundamental interest in rock mechanics. Of the various failure mechanisms, probably brittle fracture is of greatest interest. Recent reviews have brought this subject nearly up to date (Hock,1 Price,2 and Jaeger 3) and here, we summarize certain recent developments. As our understanding of brittle fracture is derived almost solely from laboratory studies this will amount to a review of certain laboratory experiments. New studies in four areas are pertinent; these concern 1) the volume changes which accompany brittle fracture, 2) the propagation of cracks in compression, 3) certain frictional characteristics of rocks and minerals at high pressure, and 4) the law of effective stress for crystalline rocks. Our objective here is less to present an entirely consistent, complete picture of how a rock fractures than it is to emphasize gaps in our understanding and, thus, suggest areas that need further study. Progress is still painfully slow in this field and perhaps this approach will stimulate new work. OBSERVATIONS Although the behavior of large rock masses is most often the concern in rock mechanics, the number of large-scale experimental tests is still vanishingly small. Our experimental observations arc, by and large, still made on small, relatively flaw-free, rock samples. Here also we report the behavior of small samples.

C.)—This excellent article on an ingenious and successful installation of wooden rock bolts loses much of its effectiveness through an attempt by the authors to establish the general adaptability of this type of support. Possibly because they have only local experience as a guide, they imply erroneously in the first paragraph that the Bureau of Mines has been opposed to wooden bolting, although later in the article reference is made to a Bureau publication on the subject. In 1947 the Bureau of Mines decided to sponsor experiments in roof bolting in coal mines because the experience of the St. Joseph Lead Co. had indicated that this type of roof support appeared to be a roof-fall accident-prevention measure that might be adopted and also effect economies in operating cost. Justification for this belief has been borne out, particularly in coal mining. This program has been carried out under the following general program: 1—The Roof Control Section of the Bureau of Mines has advocated and initiated underground experiments under controlled conditions with many different ideas related to rock bolting since 1947. In no instance has cooperation in developing an idea been refused, no matter how ridiculous it may have seemed at first glance, if it has been requested by a mining company. 2—The Bureau of Mines has no police powers over the selection of roof-support devices and seeks none. 3—At the request of an operator, the Bureau of Mines will make comparative tests on various types of bolts underground and will submit resultant data for the operator's consideration. 4—Wherever possible, the Bureau publicizes successful installations, so that others may benefit from this experience; however, it is careful not to discriminate between manufacturers of bolts or bolt-installation equipment. Unsuccessful experiments probably should also be publicized, but from a practical standpoint it is usually not feasible. In other words, the role of the Roof Control Section of the Bureau is in line with the original purpose for which the Bureau was first organized: to serve industry through gathering, analyzing, and disseminating factual data. It would seem to be logical that the starting point for any experimentation on roof bolts in coal mines should be the time-proved practice of the

CHARLES H. FULTON (author's reply to discussion*).-Mr. E. E. Thum is kind enough to point out an apparent discrepancy between the conclusions drawn from experiments and the results of those experiments. It is stated on page 1383 that carbon dioxide in excess of 1 per cent. is not found in the gases above the carbon reduction temperature (of zinc oxide). This statement refers to such temperatures as occur in ordinary zinc distillation and is not meant to include temperatures above 1350° C., and it should have been so stated in the original paper. When the temperature of the distilling chamber reached 1400° and above, it was noted that the amount of carbon dioxide in the gases increased. This cannot be explained by the equilibrium of the reaction 2CO?CO2 + C, and in seeking reasons for the discrepancy, the experiments of Meyer

A series of as -quenched 4340 bars were drawn through a carbide die to various reductions. The X-ray diffraction technique of Lopata and Kula was employed to detect preferred orientation in drawn martensitic steel bars with low amounts of deformation, as lord as 0.8 pct The specimen face of each bar examined was cut at a 45-deg angle to the bar axis. The reflecting planes in the 45-deg face were varied by appropriate rotation of the sample using a spectrogonionzeter. TIE X-ray bean of a diffractometer was reflected from the center of the bar and the diffracted intensity was delected with a proportional counter and recorded. Intensity peaks were developed by cold working for 110 planes oriented at 0 and 60 deg to the bar axis. The intensity peaks increased with increasing defortnalion us a preferred orientation with a 110 texture developed parallel to the drawing direction. The intensity peaks for deformed as-quenched specimens remain unchanged after tempering at temperatures as high as 1000°F. The same amount of preferred orienlalion was observed both inferritic (hot-rolled) and martensitic (as-quenched) structures after an equivalent amount of deformation. THE deformation of martensite with medium carbon content. less than 0.5 pct, has been studied by Breyer et a1.1,2 It was reported that changes in properties such as resistivity, carbide precipitation, and the introduction of a yield point phenomenon were produced after cold reduction of as-quenched AISI 4340 steel bars. Later, Breyer and Nachtman3 studied the effect of cold reduction upon X-ray line intensity. They showed that the integrated 110 line intensity increased with increasing deformation when the planes examined were perpendicular to the die drawing direction. The integrated 110 line intensity for planes oriented at 45 deg to the die drawing direction, in contrast, were found to slightly decrease. These changes were proposed to be consistent with the previously proposed model of a stress-induced ordering of carbon atoms in the vicinity of dislocations.1,2 Objections can be raised to the above interpretation of the X-ray results on two grounds: a) Rough structure factor calculations indicate that the intensity changes are too large (50 pct observed vs 2 pct calculated4,5) to be the result of changes in the location of iron atoms produced by the stress-induced ordering of the carbon atoms. b) The results might be explained in terms of preferred orientations, although X-ray evidence of the development of texture has not been reported in the literature for deformations as slight as 1 or 2 pct. The aim of the present work was to determine if preferred orientation was present in such cold-drawn martensitic steel bars. In drawn rod or wire there is generally a certain crystallographic direction which is aligned in the direction of the wire axis, and the crystallographic planes are distributed symmetrically around this "fiber axis".6-8 This type of cylindrical specimen, with the fiber axis located at the center, will show rotational symmetry. Lopata and Kula9 proposed an experimental method utilizing a specimen cut at 45 deg, see Fig. 1. The X-ray beam is diffracted from the center of this bar cross section. The specimen is rotated around an axis perpendicular to the bar axis and lying in the 45-deg cut face. This permits the angle between the normals to the reflecting planes and the bar axis to be varied from 0 to 90 deg.9 With this arrangement the errors due to absorption and irradiated volume compensate each other.' This greatly simplifies analysis of the data and is of considerable advantage for quantitative measurements. If there is preferred orientation in the specimen, more planes are oriented in a particular direction in the bar. When the bar is rotated to the favorable Bragg condition for that particular orientation, the intensity will be higher than that for some other angle. This technique was adopted for the present investigation.

In measuvements of the solubility of nitrogen in fer-rilic Fe-P alloys, tile nitrogen solubility is found to be Less in pIrospliorus-bearing alloys than in pure iron. The reduction in solubility is about 20 pct in a 1.0 wt pct P alloy at 1300°C and about 30 pct in a 0.23 wt pct P alloy at 440°C. Diffusion coefficient measurements at 1150 and 585°C show that phosphorus also decreases the nitrogen diffusivity in iron. In previous work on the Fe-P-N system, phosphorus was found to reduce the nitrogen solubility in liquid iron slightly.&apos; Indirect evidence for similar behavior in a Fe at low temperature was obtained by Dickenscheid and Brauner.&apos; These authors found that phosphorus reduces the height of the internal-friction peak due to dissolved nitrogen. The results of Dickenscheid and Brauner were confirmed by J. C. Swartz of this Laboratory in a single internal-friction experiment using the same specimen stock as in the solubility measurements described below. In the present investigation, the solubility of nitrogen in a fer rite-stabilized Fe-1.0 wt pct P alloy was measured in the temperature range from 800" to 1300°C. Additional experiments were performed in the temperature range from 440° to 585°C, using an Fe-0.23 wt pct P alloy and NH3-H2 gas mixtures. EXPERIMENTAL The experiments were performed in a vertical tube furnace wound with platinum wire. For experimental temperatures of 800°C and above, a mixture of 5 pct Hz in N2 was used as the reacting gas. The gas mixture was prepurified from oxygen by passage over platinized asbestos at 450°C, and subsequently over anhydrone to remove water. Flow rates of the gases were measured with capillary flow meters. The temperature was measured before and after each experiment with a Pt/Pt-10 pct Rh thermocouple. The specimens used for the high-temperature solubility measurements were in the form of rectangular plates, 0.534 by 1.6 by 3.8 cm. The specimens were cleaned in trichloroethylene and annealed for 2 hr in hydrogen at the beginning of each experiment. In measuring the nitrogen solubility, the specimens were held in the reacting gas until equilibrated, then cooled in a water-cooled copper block at the bottom of the furnace. The time needed for equilibration at 1150°C was determined by measuring the average nitrogen content of the 1.0 pct P alloy as a function of reaction time. As will be described, the nitrogen diffusivity in the alloy at 1150°C is only slightly less than its calculated diffusivity in pure iron. At temperatures other than 1150°C, the reaction time used in measuring the nitrogen solubility was about twice the calculated equilibration time for pure iron at the same temperature. With a few exceptions, the procedure for the low-temperature solubility measurements was the same as that described above. The compositions of the NH3-H2 gas mixtures were determined by collecting gas samples from the gas train and analyzing them for NH3 by titration with HC1. The specimen thicknesses were less than those used for the high-temperature experiments, eg., 0.124 and 0.051 cm for measurements at 585° and 440°C, respectively. Nitrogen concentrations were obtained by chemical analysis, using the Kjeldahl method. The Fe-P alloys were made by adding ferrophos-phorus to electrolytic Plastiron (Type 104 A). Commercial ferrophosphorus, containing 3 pct Mn and 0.35 pct Si as the major impurities, was first purified by melting under an FeO slag. In a separate heat, the electrolytic iron was melted and vacuum-carbon-deoxidized prior to making the ferrophosphorus addition. The principal impurities and their concentrations in weight percent in the 1.0 pct P alloy are as follows: Mn, 0.01; Si, <0.01; C, 0.01; 0, 0.003; and N, 0.0012. The effects of sulfur (up to 0.1 pet) on the deformation and fracture characteristics of iron, in cast form, were studied at strain rates up to 100 pct pcr sec and at temperatures of 1600o to -3300 oF. The effects of oxygen and manganese additions on the behavior of Fe-S alloys were studied under comparable test conditions. Brittle fracture characteristics, evident at all strain rates, resulted from the presence of the liquid iron sulfide phase at grain boundaries. Ductility could be restored in three ways: solution of the sulfide in solid y iron at higher temperatures, spheroid-zzation of the liquid sulfide, and increase. in the melting point ot the sulfide. THE literature shows that most previous studies of deformation and fracture at hot working temperatures have been based on measurements of energy absorption, reduction of height in forging upset tests, torsion tests of bar or wire samples, and so forth,&apos; but that relatively few tension tests have been used at high temperatures and strain rates. The present work was initiated to study the ef- fects of temperature, strain rate, composition, and structure on the deformation and fracture characteristics of iron, utilizing cast specimens tested in tension. As in a previous study,&apos; strain rates up to 100 pct per sec were chosen for the temperature range 1600° to 2400° to provide data which might be useful in the interpretation of the deformation and fracture behavior of steels under hot working conditions. The previous work was with Fe-P solid solution al10ys;2 this work is concerned with Fe-S alloys, and with the effects of oxygen and manganese additions. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE Cast tes! specimens were employed throughout, since most of the difficulty during hot working occurs in the initial breakdown of the ingot. Alloy Systems. Ten 25 lb. heats containing sulphur were prepared. Of these, three had manganese additions, and two had oxygen additions. The sulfur content varied from 0.023 to 0.10 pct. Manganese contents were intended to be ten to twenty times the sulfur content of the particular alloy. Oxygen, being more difficult to control in small melts, was varied by the amount of solid deoxidizer added, but poor control of the oxygen content was experienced in most instances. Table I shows the chemical analyses of the heats. Melting and Casting. Electrolytic-iron chips were melted by high frequency induction in a prefired, clay-graphite crucible lined with rammed magnesite.

The boundaries of the (a +ß) field in the Al-Li system were determined between 150°and 550°C utilizing quantitative metallography and lattice-parameter measurements. The solubility of lithium in aluminum decreases from 12.0at. pct Li at 550°C to 5.5 at. pct Li at 150°C. P Al-Li is saturated with aluminum at 45.8 at. pct Li and has this boundary value constant over the temperature range 150°to 550°C. THE solid solubility of lithium in aluminum has been determined by several investigators, 1-6 but, as shown in Fig. 1, there is little agreement among the various determinations. The earliest investiga-tions&apos;-&apos; are suspect because of the use of impure materials. Although high-purity materials were employed in more recent work,4&apos;5 the experimental techniques may have led to contamination of the specimens. Probably the best work has been that of Costas and Marshall,6 who obtained close agreement between results obtained by two independent phase-boundary techniques: electrical resistivity and mi-crohardness. No detailed studies of the solubility of aluminum in the bcc ß phase, Al-Li, have been reported. Cursory investigations1,2,6 have indicated only that the (a+ß) -p boundary lies between 40 and 50 at. pct Li and is relatively independent of temperature. The present work was undertaken in order to provide an independent check on Costas and Marshall&apos;s determination of the solubility of lithium in aluminum, to extend knowledge of this solubility limit to temperatures below 225°C, and to make an accurate determination of the solubility of aluminum in Al-Li. EXPEFUMENTAL Alloy Preparation. In view of the difficulties encountered in previous investigations of the A1-Li system, close attention was paid to the use of methods of alloy preparation and treatment that would minimize contamination. Aluminum sheet (99.99 + pct Al) was vacuum-induction melted in a beryllia crucible to remove hydrogen. Lithium (99.9 pct Li) was charged with pre-melted aluminum into a beryllia crucible, in a helium-filled drybox. The crucible was sealed in a Vycor tube and transferred from the drybox to an induction furnace. Melting of alloys was performed by induction heating in a helium atmosphere. Solidification was accomplished by means of a suction apparatus, shown in Fig. 2, in which the alloy was forced by changes of pressure into a 3/16-in. inside diam closed-end beryllia tube. This technique produced rapid solidification of a small portion of the melt, resulting in alloys with a high degree of homogeneity. Typical lithium distributions are presented in Table I. Transverse sections 1/8 in. long were cut from the alloy rods, and each section was split in half longitudinally. One half of each section was analyzed for lithium, and the opposing halves were employed for phase-boundary determinations. Lithium contents were determined by flame photometry with an accuracy of 1 pct of the amount of lithium present. Thermal Treatments. Homogenization and equilibration heat treatments were performed in electrical-resistance furnaces with temperatures controlled to ± 2OC. Calibrated chromel-alumel thermocouples were employed to measure temperature. Homogenization was performed in helium-filled l?yrex tubes for 1 hr at 565°C. The encapsulated specimens were then transferred directly to furnaces maintained at lower temperatures for equilibration. Equilibration times were 2 hr at 550°C, 8 hr at 450°C, 27 hr at 350°c, 90 hr at 250°c, and 285 hr at 150"~. These times were chosen on the basis of conditions employed by previous investigators. Alloys were quenched from the equilibration temperatures by breaking the capsules into a silicone oil bath. By performing all possible operations either in sealed capsules or in a helium-filled drybox, the specimens were given minimum exposure to the atmosphere. Quantitative Metallography. Metallography of Al-Li alloys is difficult because of the atmospheric reactivity of the ß phase. It was found possible, however, to prepare surfaces of good metallographic quality by preventing contact with moisture during preparation. Grinding through 4/0 paper was performed in the drybox. The specimens were then transferred under kerosene to the polishing wheel. Three polishing stages were employed: 25-p alundum with kerosene lubricant on billiard cloth, 1-µ diamond paste on Microcloth, and 1/4-p diamond paste on Microcloth. Between stages the samples were cleaned by rinsing in trichloroethylene and buffing

This paper describes experimental procedures for the calibration of capillary tubes to be employed as comparison standards in gas flow-rate measurements and considers several types of flow which were observed in the calibration of seven capillaries of varying diameter. It is shown that under certain experimental conditions deviations from Poiseuille flow are observed which may not be attributed to turbulence, and that this flow behavior may be described empirically by introducing the classical kinetic energy correction into the Poiseuille equation. INTRODUCTION Techniques have been developed for the measurement of the volume rate of flow of nitrogen through glass capillary tubes as a function both of the differential pressure applied and of the absolute gas pressure. Capillary tubes thus calibrated are frequently used to determine the rate of gas flow through a porous sample in the measurement of slip-corrected permeability. The purpose of this note is to describe the calibration procedure and to discuss some observed deviations from the ideal flow behavior predicted by the Poiseuille equation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The volume flow rate of nitrogen as a function of the differential pressure was determined experimentally for a series of seven glass capillary tubes of varying diameter. As is shown in Table 1, the capillary radii in the series ranged from 0.004 cm for K1 to 0.07 cm for K7. The capillary tubes were cut from capillary tubing purchased on special order from several manufacturers and the bore radii were determined by microscopic measurement. The gas volume flow rate was measured for each capillary tube at a series of differential pressures in the range from 0 to 3 cm of mercury and at average absolute pressures of 1.0, 2.5, 4.0, and 6.0 atm. Experimental Procedure for Small Capillaries A schematic diagram of the apparatus used to calibrate the three smallest capillaries, Kl, K2, and K3, is shown in Fig. 1. By means of a standard Ruska Instrument Corp. volumetric pump (equipped with a synchronous motor drive, two stages of gear reduction, and a quick-change lathe gear box), nitrogen was displaced by mercury from a metal cell immersed in a constant-temperature bath. The pump, the line to the cell, and a part of the cell were filled with mercury. As mercury was forced into the cell, it displaced nitrogen which passed through the capillary tube being calibrated and into a large container with a volume of approximately 30 liters. Since the volume of this container was very large compared to the total volume change of the gas resulting from the action of the displacement pump, the absolute pressure of the system was essentially constant throughout any one run. Prior to any determination this pressure could be set at any desired level by means of an auxiliary nitrogen cylinder. The differential pressure across the capillary was measured with a Meriam Red Oil manometer and recorded together with the corresponding pump displacement rate which was equal to the gas flow rate. By repeating this process for a series of different displacement rates at each of the absolute pressures of interest, the data necessary for plotting the calibration curves for capillaries K1, K2, and K3 were obtained. All calibration measurements were made in a constant temperature room to minimize errors due to temperature fluctuations. In each run. the flow was maintained until equilibrium was established. Experimental Procedures for Large Capillaries The flow rates through Capillaries K4, K5, K6, and K7 required to obtain the pressure drops desired were larger than could be obtained from available constant displacement pumps, and it was thus necessary to employ an alternative calibration procedure. The arrangement of apparatus used in calibrating these capillaries at an average pressure of one atmosphere is shown in Fig. 2. Each capillary was calibrated by flowing nitrogen through the capillary and recording the differential pressure as a function of the flow rate. &apos;The differential pressure was measured with a Meriam Red Oil manometer and the flow rate was determined by collecting the effluent gas over water at constant pressure and recording the increase in volume per unit time after an equilibrium had been established. The annual production and productivity of underground coal mines in recent years declined from 334 Mt (368 million st) and 14.5 t (16 st) per man per shift in 1969 to approximately 254 Mt (280 million st) and less than 8 t (9 st) per man per shift in 1977. Productivity is still hovering at about 7.25 t (8 st) per man per shift. According to US Bureau of Mines, the estimated US coal reserve is about 396 Gt (437 billion st), 68.65% of which is obtainable by underground mining methods. Approximately 153 Gt (169 billion st), or about 85.2% of the high Btu premium coking coal of the eastern US, would need to be extracted by underground mining methods. It is thus apparent that under- ground mining will continue to play a major role in total US coal production, which is expected to rapidly increase to about 1.1 Gt (1.2 billion st) by 1985, with about 606 Mt (668 million st) being contributed by underground mines. Production Potential of Continuous Mining The production potential of a continuous mining section depends primarily on the producing ability of the miner, transporting ability of the face haulage, and the matching of the two systems. The producing ability of the continuous miner depends on its actual cutting ability and the time available for cutting coal. The performance of 10 continuous miners operating in coal seams of various thicknesses were monitored in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, using continuous electrical power analyzers and time studies. The recordings on current and power strip charts yielded an accurate analysis of the cutting, trimming, and idle times of the machines on a full shift basis. Continuous miners of various models and sizes from 112-298 kW (150-400 hp) were monitored. Based on actual cutting time, the average cutting ability of the machines, as shown in [Fig. 1], ranged from

Methods previously developed for the study of air-liquid displacements in microscopic capillaries (inner diameters of 3 to 40 microns) have been used to investigate oil-water displacements in capillaries initially filled with water. Displacement calculations assuming perfect displacement and no capillary pressure hysteresis yielded oil effective viscosities smaller than the macroscopic viscosities. For a given liquid pair, the oil effective viscosity decreased both with decreasing capillary size and with increasing oil-water viscosity ratio. This behavior can be explained by the existence of an annular water film (20 A to 260 A thick) on the capillary wall. When the capillary was first filled with oil, the ratio of the oil effective viscosity to the normal oil vircosity was highest for the first water displacement and decreased with subsequent displacements. Sometimes the oil effective viscosity ratio during the initial water displacement was greater than unity. INTRODUCTION In a previous paper1 a technique was described for studying air-liquid and liquid-liquid displacements in very small capillaries of uniform diameter, in the hope that such microscopic data would further the understanding of the nature of multiphase fluid flow through porous media. That paper contained comprehensive data for air-liquid displacements in Pyrex capillaries, with a few data for oil-water displacements in capillaries initially filled with water. The purpose of this paper is to present more complete results for oil-water displacements in capillaries initially filled with water, and to describe for the first time such observations in capillaries initially filled with oil. In this way the effect of the wetting history of the system upon the displacement process may be studied. METHODS The basic techniques employed were described in the previous paper.1 The measuring procedure and the working equations will be briefly summarized here and a few modilications will be pointed out. For the present study, temperature control within 0.l °C was obtained by placing the microscope and its immediate accessories in a thermostated air bath made of a steel frame covered with plexiglas. The water and oils used in this work were the same as in the previous paper,1 with the addition of "Medium Mineral Oil, U.S.P. supplied by the Harshaw Scientific Co. When the first liquid was introduced into the horizontal capillary, the air-liquid static capillary pressure Poc was measured along the observable length of the capillary. From the relation Poc = 4y cos 0/d, the capillary diameter d could be calculated from Poc if the "microscopic" air-liquid boundary tension, To = y cos On, was taken as equal to its known "macroscopic" value. This calculation involves assuming that cos 6 = 1 and that capillary size or the resulting high interfa-cial curvature has no effect on surface tension, or y cos 6, as was verified by our work, and also by that of Cohan and Meyers on air-liquid-solid systems. For several capillaries these calculated diameter values were compared with values measured visually with a filar micrometer eyepiece. For a given capillary the average values for the two methods agreed within 1 or 2 per cent, but the visual values were less reproducible than the calculated values. Further the calculated values were much less subject to personal bias and took into account any slight ellipticity that might be present. Hence diameters calculated from air-liquid Poc data were used throughout this paper. The second liquid was introduced in such a way that a single spherical interface separated the two liquids. A laboratory investigation of the behavior of casing subjected to salt loading indicates that it is not economically feasible to design casing for the most severe situations of nonuniform loading. When the annulus is completely filled with cement, casing is subjected to a nearly uniform loading approximately equal to the overburden pressure, and, although the modes of failure may be different, the design of casing to withstand uniform salt pressure can be computed on the same basis as the design of casing to withstand fluid pressure. Failure of casing by nonuniform loading in inadequately cemented washed-out salt sections should be considered a cementing problem rather than a casing design problem. INTRODUCTION Casing failures in salt zones have created an interest in understanding the behavior of casing subjected to salt loading. The designer must know the magnitudes and types of loading to be expected from salt flow and he must be able to calculate the reaction of the casing to these loads. In the laboratory study reported in this paper, short-time experimental measurements of the load required to force steel cylinders into rock salt are used as a basis for computing the salt loading on casing. These results must be considered to be qualitative only since rock salt behaves differently under down-hole and atmospheric conditions and also may vary in strength at different locations. The beneficial effects of (1) cement around casing, (2) a liner cemented inside of casing, and (3) fluid pressure inside of casing in resisting casing failure are considered. ROCK SALT BEHAVIOR UNDER STRESS The effects of such factors as overburden loading, internal fluid pressure, and temperature on the flow of salt around cavities have been studied extensively at The U. of Texas. Brown, et al.1 have concluded that an opening in rock salt can reach a stable equilibrium if the formation stress is less than 3,000 psi and the temperature is less than 300°F. At higher temperatures and pressures an opening in salt can close completely. These results indicate that calculations based upon elastic and plastic equilibrium for an open hole in salt should be applied only at depths less than 3,000 ft. In most oil wells the tem- perature will be less than 300F in the salt sections, therefore no appreciable temperature effects are anticipated. Serata and Gloyna2 have reported an investigation of the structural stability of salt. .They assume that the major principal stress is due to the overburden. Other stresses can be superimposed if additional lateral pressures are known to be acting in a particular region. In the present analysis an isotropic state of stress is assumed to exist in the salt before the hole is drilled, since salt regions are generally at rest. This assumption is partially verified from formation breakdown pressure data taken during squeeze-cementing operations in salt. Experimental measurements of the elastic properties of rock salt indicate a value of 150,000 psi for Young&apos;s modulus and a value of approximately 0.5 for Poisson&apos;s ratio. A value of % for Poison&apos;s ratio with finite Young&apos;s modulus would indicate that the material was incompressible. Values ranging from 2,300 to 5,000 psi have been reporteda for the unconfined compressive strength of salt. These variations may be due to differences in the properties of the salt from different locations or at least partially to differences in testing techniques. Salt is very ductile, even under relatively low confining pressures. For example, in triaxial tests reported by Handin3 strains in excess of 20 to 30 per cent were obtained without fracture. When casing is cemented in a hole through a salt section, the casing must withstand a load from the formation if plastic flow of the salt is prevented. To determine the forces which salt can impose on casing, circular steel rods were forced into Hockley rocksalt with the longitudinal axis of the rods parallel to the surface of the salt. The force required to embed rods 0.2 to I in. in diameter and 1/2 to 1 in. long to a depth equal to the radius of the rods was found to be F/DL =28,700 psi (± 3,700 psi) , .... (1) where D is the diameter, and L is the length of the rod. CASING STRESSES Since an open borehole through salt at depths greater than 3,000 ft will tend to close, cemented casing which prevents closure of the hole will be subjected to a pressure approximately equal to the horizontal formation stress after a sufficiently long time. As a first approximation the horizontal stress can be assumed to be equal to the overburden pressure. This is in agreement with the suggestion by Texter4 that an adequate cement job can prevent plastic flow of salt and result in a pressure on the casing approximately equal to the overburden pressure. A flotation plant was placed in operation in 1945 at the Tamaqua colliery of the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. Inc., to recover fine anthracite which is discharged from the cleaning plant with the washery water.‡ In addition to the recovery plant, facilities were provided for the complete clarification of the washery water, recirculation of this clarified water for breaker use, and disposal of the refuse solids in a waste impounding dam. Fig I shows a view of the settling tanks and the flotation plant. Flow Diagram The flow diagram for the complete recovery project is given in Fig 2. All the waste water from the cleaning plant is collected in a sump A outside the breaker structure, from which a 7000 gpm pump B delivers it through a 16 in. line to a 75-ft diam hydroseparator C. The hydroseparator, acting as a classifier, is set to give a separation at approximately 200-mesh. The minus 200-mesh overflow is discharged by gravity into the 180-ft thickener D for final settling of the solids. The classifier underflow sludge is pumped to the flotation plant by a 6-in. quadruplex diaphragm pump E. A 10-ft diam hydroseparator F is used to make a second classification on the sludge solids at approximately 28-mesh. The underflow from this classifier containing the coarse particles is elevated by a 6-in. diaphragm pump G and is discharged on two 4- by 6-ft vibrating screens II. These screens are dressed with approximately 28-mesh cloth. Screen oversize product flows directly to the centrifuge that dewaters the cleaned froth. The screen underflow and the overflow from the 10-ft classifier flow to the flotation circuit. The flotation feed is conditioned in a 12 by 12-ft agitator tank J at a pulp density of I:2.33 (30 pct solids). Reagents are fed to the circuit by reagent feeder I. The conditioned pulp is then diluted to a pulp density of approximately I: 5 (18 pct solids) and is fed to two banks of four 100-cu ft froth flotation cells K for primary coal recovery and cleaning. Additional reagents from reagent distributor L are added to the feed weir-box of Nos. 2, 3, and 4 cells of each bank of flotation machines. Clean coal removed from these cells flows directly to the clean-coal sump. Dilute tailings from the primary cells is re-thickened in a 30-ft diam thickener M and is then retreated in a scavenger circuit for final recovery of coal. The scavenger circuit consists of a 6- by 6-ft agitator tank N and two banks of four 24-cu ft froth flotation cells 0. Coal froth from these cells flows to the dewatering equipment and the tailings flows to a vertical refuse pump which delivers it to the 180-ft diam waste thickener D. Dewatering of the coal products is accomplished in a 54- by 72-in Bird centrifugal filter P. The cake product is dropped onto a conveyor and is loaded

The paper describes a cyclic method for processing manganese ores using sodium sulphate as the basic reagent. Sodium sulphate is electrolyzed in a diaphragm cell to give an anolyte sodium sulphate acid and a catholyte containing caustic soda, a part of which is carbonated in a cyclic manner to Form ash. and reduced ore is leached with the anolyte to dissolve the manganese and the impurities are precipitated by addition of catholyte. Manganese in the pregnant solution is precipitated as synthetic rhodochrosite with a carbonated catholyte, and sodium sulphate is regenerated. Calcining the manganese carbonate site a high-grade product and the carbon dioxide is returned to the carbonation step. the results of laboratory tests using cells equipped with synthetic fiber diaphragms and permselective membranes which permit transfer of using or cations during electrolysis are described.
