In the study described here, flotation tests were conducted on pure CaF2, on CaF2 doped at several concentration levels with either NaF or YF3, and on natural fluorite samples containing various amounts of impurities in an effort to extend previous knowledge of the influence of crystalline point imperfections on the flotation properties of solids. The results of these tests showed that although recoveries generally decreased as impurities increased, the differences in recovery were not nearly as striking as those detected in earlier experiments. A number of experimentalists have shown an interest in the way in which crystalline point imperfections affect the flotation properties of solids. As long ago as 1953, Welch hypothesized that it might be possible to control surface imperfections and thereby also control the flotation of solids.' A few years later, in some rather extensive work, Plaksin and his coworkers varied the surface imperfections of a number of compounds by oxidation or reduction processes and found that significant variations in flotation properties resulted.2-4 More recently, Simkovich showed that the recovery of both AgCl and PbS could be markedly varied by adding solid-solution impurities, which acted as doping agents, to these compounds.5 Then Mular studied the flotation of ZnO as a function of the doping agents Al2O3 and Li2O.6 Once again, it was found that these impurities, even in very low concentrations, had profound effects upon flotation recoveries. From an imperfection point of view, the defect structures of the compounds tested previously are as follows:7 PbS — amphoteric semiconductor with a Frenkel-type defect structure in the cation sub-lattice.8 AgCl - ionic conductor-Frenkel type defect structure? ZnO — n-type semiconductor, zinc ion interstitials and quasi-free electrons.10 All of these works undoubtedly bear some relation to the findings that the flotation properties of seemingly identical minerals from different ore deposits often exhibit extreme variation in flotation behavior, i.e., that small amounts of analytically undetectable impurities often have a great influence upon flotation

THESE observations of the metal-working industries of Europe are based on a three months' tour of eight countries of Europe, in which 75 industrial establishments were visited in England, France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Austria and Switzerland during the summer of 1927. Since the Western Electric Co. is a large consumer of copper and brass, these industries were of particular interest and differences in practices were of keen interest to us.

During the course of an investigation into the drawability of automobile-body sheet steel, it became apparent that certain advantages would be possessed by a deep-drawing steel with a very low yield strength, but almost normal tensile strength, provided a reduction in yield strength could be accomplished without sacrifice of ductility and fine grain size. It would also be desirable to have this steel free from strainaging; that is, free from the tendency for the yield point to return after it had been eliminated by straining. It was known that wet hydrogen treatment acted to eliminate aging, but as carried out by other investigators, at relatively high temperatures, this treatment resulted in grain coarsening. It has been established by some of the experiments reported in this paper that all of these objectives can be accomplished by treatment in wet hydrogen at a low temperature, in the neighborhood of 720°C. The time of treatment is relatively short (about 3 hr. to completion with 20-gauge sheet) if the water content of the hydrogen atmosphere is made fairly high, say almost 30 per cent by volume. At this temperature, the grain size remains fine in the time required. After this treatment sheet reduced the usual amount by cold-rolling has a grain size of about A.S.T.M. No. 7. The yield point is completely eliminated, and the yield strength is reduced to a very low value, in the neighborhood of 15,000 lb. per sq. in. The stress-strain curve departs gradually from the straight-line elastic part after the fashion of nonferrous deep-drawing alloys. This elimination of the yield point is accompanied by a very low indentation hardness; for example, 32 Rockwell B or even lower. There is no aging as measured by increase in the yield strength upon aging at room temperature or for 3 hr. at 200°C., after stretching about 10 per cent in tension. Tensile strength is only slightly less than the box-annealed sheet, seldom dropping much below 40,000 lb. per sq. in. Elongation is practically unchanged, or increased slightly. The term yield point, as here used, refers to the phenomenon of heterogeneous deformation occurring at a substantially constant load, observed principally in annealed low-carbon steels. If such a steel is loaded in tension, the load increases steadily with elastic strain, suddenly falls, fluctuates slightly about some constant value for a time and then begins to rise again as deformation proceeds. In the 1st part of this paper a comparassion of the different methods for determining the modules of elasticity and deformation of hard rock is made. It is found that the plate bearing method has a serious shortcoming. The slit flat-jack method seems to be a mare reasonable technique, which is recommended as a desirable method for in situ testing. In the 2nd part, a new test method to determine the properties of deformation and strength of weak plane in rock mass is recommended. Then the relation of weak plane character to the character of stress-strain curve, the relation of normal stress to the character of shear displacement curve and the yielding criterion of weak plane are discussed.

FLASH roasting of iron concentrate is in the experimental stage at Copperhill. The problem is peculiar in that the iron concentrate is predominantly pyrrhotite; the ratio of that mineral to pyrite being 5 to 1. Results so far indicate that the heat, generated in roasting a material containing 52.0 per cent iron and 38.0 per cent sulfur, requires special handling and for this reason the installation costs per ton of roaster feed may be too great to compete with hearth roasting. Interesting features of flash roasting at Copperhill are: 1. The sulfur dioxide content of the roaster exit gas can be varied between wide limits. Eight per cent sulfur dioxide gas, with 1.30 per cent sulfur in the calcine, has been common practice and gas up to 13.0 per cent sulfur dioxide has been possible. 2. Temperatures of the exit gases are very high. When roasting 60 tons or more of iron concentrate per 24 hr. in a modified Wedge roaster, the temperature in the roaster rises to 2000° F. and the calcine is lowered to 0.20 per cent sulfur. If the entire roaster system could be constructed to withstand such temperatures, ideal roasting conditions would obtain as regards sulfur elimination and tonnage roasted.

DURING the past decade the writer has studied and mapped certain ore deposits and their structural associations in the states of Chihuahua, Durango, New Mexico and Arizona, and he believes that these deposits, with the exception of the manto-chimney, are representative of the principal types in the area of the states named. In this paper the deposits are described; then generalizations are drawn so far as seems appropriate. HANOVER, NEW MEXICO The Hanover; New Mexico, zinc deposits were briefly described by Lindgren and others,1 Paige2 and recently in more detail by Schmitt.3 These, the kind ordinarily called contact metamorphic, border the southern end of an oval area of granodiorite intrusive 3/4 mile wide and 2 1/2 miles long (Fig. 1). The granodiorite has intruded, folded, and metamorphosed sedimentary and igneous rocks, which range in age from pre-Cambrian to Upper Cretaceous. About 90 per cent of the ore has replaced coarse, recrystallized, pure, fossiliferous, lower Mississippian, nonmagnesian limestone (Hanover limestone) 110 ft. thick;4 about 75 per cent of it occurs in the upper 50 ft. of this horizon just below an 18-ft. lower Pennsylvanian shale bed, which lies on a locally inconspicuous unconformity representing upper Mississippian time. The orebodies show five shapes or attitudes, each dependent on a special structural situation: 1. Most of the ore occurs as podlike; thick lenslike or other "three-dimensional" shoots extending from top to bottom of the Hanover limestone and lying adjacent to the outer contact of a silicate zone largely of andradite, which follows the intrusive contact (Figs. 1 and 2).

During 1932 no important changes occurred in the position of Africa as a producer of petroleum. The progress of development and production in each of the areas of interest is described below. Egypt The producing fields of Egypt are Hurghada and Gemsa, located on the west short of the Red Sea, and Abu Durba in the Sinai Peninsula. Most of the production is obtained from the Hurghada field, chiefly from beds of Cretaceous age. To the end of 1930 the Hurghada field had produced 2,831,751 tons of petroleum. The Gemsa field, discovered in 1909, reached its peak of production in 1914, when 88,000 tons were produced. Of late years the production has greatly declined. Total production of the field to the end of 1930 is 182,870 tons. The total production of Abu Durba to the end of 1930 is 7069 tons. The production of Egypt for recent years is as follows: 1928, 269,324 tons; 1929, 271,520; 1930, 281,997 (1,996,000 bbl.); 1931, 288,260 (2,038,000 bbl.); 1932, 253,182 (approximately 1,790,000 bbl.). Mozambique The operations of Inyaminga Petroleum Ltd., which was engaged in drilling in the colony, have been suspended. Angola Drilling operations in this colony, conducted by Companhia de Petroleo de Angola under a concession from the Portuguese Government, were continued. A test well drilled at Cacoba, about 60 miles southeast of Luanda, to a depth of 5651 ft. was not a commercial producer. A second well was being drilled in the vicinity at the end of 1932. Morocco Until last year the search for petroleum in Morocco was in the hands of several private companies but during 1932 the National Office of Liquid Fuels of the French Government took an active interest in the develop-

For the third consecutive year, predicted increases in coal production and consumption failed to materialize. Production of bituminous, sub-bituminous and lignite coal for 1961 was estimated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at 400 million tons, a drop of 15,- 512,000 tons from the 1960 figure. Anthracite production for the year was 17.8 million tons compared to 18.8 million tons produced in 1960. Consumption figures are expected to show a proportionate decline. Of coal's major markets, only electric utilities showed an increase-and even here the increase of approximately 2% was smaller than had been expected. Major cause of relatively low consumption was a decrease of more than 20% in the use of metallurgical coal for making coke. Reductions of lesser importance were registered in general industrial, retail, and export markets.

THE early methods of mining anthracite in the steep pitching Mammoth bed consisted in driving breasts up the pitch from the gangways and airways driven in the bed along the strike (Plate 2, Fig. 1). Breasts are simply rooms driven up the pitch the full thickness of the bed (Plate 2, Fig. 2), having a width of from 18 to 30 ft., and a manway or traveling way on one or both sides. (For detail of breast method see Whildin, Trans., vol. 50, p. 704). Many difficulties were encountered, and the maintenance cost of the timbered gangways was so great as to be practically prohibitive. To reduce this .expense, the gangways were driven in the thin Skidmore bed underlying the Mammoth, and the coal mined through rock holes. (Plate 2, Fig. 2;-A.) It was found that after the breasts were driven up 80 to 100 ft., the coal almost invariably rushed or "ran away," making good ventilation almost impossible and the extraction of coal from the upper portion of the lift very difficult. The economic length of a lift is from 200 to 250 ft., and the percentage of extraction by the old method above mentioned was often under 50 per cent., while the coal recovered was so badly broken up as to reduce materially the percentage of large sizes.

Manganese nodules are essentially a surficial resource-there are four times as many nodules on the surface of the deep ocean floor as in the next 3 ft of underlying sediment. Target mine sites in the North Pacific occur in water 12,000 to 18,000 ft deep. VIBRATION, both ultrasonic and sonic, can affect the course of a variety of metallurgical processes. Reports of work on this subject have appeared at intervals over the last twenty years and a thorough review has been made by Hiedemann,' who gives a full list of references. It has been established that both refinement of structure and outgassing of the melt can be produced in most metals with sufficiently intense vibration. Many of the experiments in this field have been carried out using alloys of direct commercial interest in production- type casting equipment. Here a different approach is adopted, and simple binary alloys which exhibit different types of structure are used to facilitate examination of the effects produced under well-controlled conditions. Results from this kind of experiment should enable the basis of larger scale experiments with similar types of materials to be better substantiated. The alloys selected for this work are: 1) aluminum of 99.2 pct purity, the principal impurity being iron, near 0.4 pct; 2) A1-1.8 pct Fe, which is near eutectic composition; 3) A1-4 pct Fe—the second phase, of composition FeAl3, forms distinct acicular crystals; and 4) A1-12 pct Si—although this is of eutectic composition, the silicon normally appears in the form of large plates. Experimental Method There are three practicable methods by which acoustic vibration can be transferred to liquid metals: a) vibration of the whole of the container; b) electromagnetic induction; and c) insertion of a vibrating probe into the liquid. Method c is chosen here, and a frequency of 8 kc per sec is used. The end of the probe is electrically heated so that the metal near it will be the last to solidify. This ensures that vibration is transmitted directly to the liquid metal without passing through any solidifying and pasty intermediate region, which would attenuate acoustic waves severely. In addition, the heating prevents solid metal adhering to the probe, with consequent detuning. The transducer assembly is shown in Fig. 1. A stack of Permendur laminations 30 cm long acts as a half-wave vibrator and a winding along its length carries polarizing and energizing currents. It is joined by a half-wave coupling bar to a mild steel exponential horn, which tapers from 3.8 to 1.1 cm diam. A stainless steel stub 3 cm in length is welded on the free end. The assembly is supported by a plate located at the node of the coupling bar. Acoustic radiation losses are minimized by allowing the free end of the transducer to protrude above the surface of the cooling water. The exponential horn serves the function of matching the acoustic output impedance of the transducer to the radiation resistance of the probe into the melt. Electrical drive is provided by a 1 kw generator. Measurements of probe vibration amplitude during melt treatment are obtained from a gramophone pick-up with the needle attached to the wide end of the horn. This device is calibrated with a microscope before use. Liquid aluminum is very actively erosive and solution of materials with which the molten metal comes into contactcauses difficulties. THE property at which this work was done consists of a large deposit of potash salts occurring in massive beds of rock salt, overlain by 600 ft. of salt-impregnated shales and marls. It is in the Province of Cataluiia, Spain, about 45 miles from the railway station of Mauresa and about a mile south of Suria. In addition to sinking the shaft, the program of construction work laid out by the European owners (not Spaniards) included a single-track narrow-gage railroad from Mauresa to the mine; one large office building and several large shop buildings, all of brick and concrete with steel truss roofs; two extensive benches for the future recovery plant; and a large village of stone dwellings for employees. The pay-roll showed approximately 1200 to 1500 men employed. After two years' operation, ending early in the autumn of 1920, the shaft had been sunk 325 ft. and still had an equal distance to go to reach the potash; all tunnels for the railroad were done and the road-bed $0 per cent completed; only a little more than the foundations were completed for all the large buildings, and the excavations of the benches were about 75 per cent done-while only a fair start had been made upon the employees' village. This was the state of affairs when the European owners decided to offer this property under a one-year option to an American syndicate, providing that they agreed to carry on the entire building program and to sink the shaft as fast as was consistent with the quality of work which they demanded, for they wished the shaft to endure at least 200 years.

Membership.-For the second year in Succession membership reached a new high level for all time, as indicated in the accompanying tabulation in which "Members" includes all categories except Student Associates. [END 1938 END 1939 NET GAIN Members9, 57 610, 163 587 Student Associates 2,898 3,760 862 12,474 13,923 1,449] Net gain in membership (aside from Student Associates) was 587 compared with 744 in 1938, despite the fact that applications received in 1939 exceeded those received in 1938 (1271 against 1162). The smaller net gain is accounted for in three ways: (1) A greater lag in enrollment of those elected in the last quarter of the year; (2) an increase in the number of applications involving change of status from Junior Member to Member; and (3) an increase of 167 in the loss by death by resignation and by suspension in 1939 as compared with 1938. Experience shows that at the end of a year of less prosperous conditions in the mineral industries, and, therefore, among engineers engaged in these industries, resignations and suspensions are more numerous. Business and industrial indexes all show 1938 to have been somewhat less prosperous than 1937; but the improvement in 1939 should be reflected in the record for 1940.

IN the course of a series of measurements of the rate of diffusion of carbon in austenite at about 960°C. (1760°F.) and 1110°C. (2030°F.), it became necessary to determine carbon concentration when austenite is saturated with graphite, because of indications that the hitherto accepted value of the solubility of graphite in this temperature range is too low. Specimens of carbonyl iron were saturated at temperature in a hydrogen-toluene atmosphere which was in equilibrium with graphite. The carbon content of the steel was measured either by combustion or by the loss of weight after substantially complete decarburization in an atmosphere of hydrogen saturated at room temperature with water vapor. The absence of carbide or graphite as a phase at temperature was demonstrated by microscopic examination of saturated specimens that had been drastically quenched. The mean result of concordant measurements is that gamma iron saturated with respect to graphite contains 1.39 per cent carbon at 957°C. (1755°F.) and 1.89 per cent at 1110°C. (2030°°F.). These two values, plotted along with what appears from the literature to be the best value (0.69 per cent) at the iron-graphite eutectoid temperature (738°C. or 1360°F.), yield a curve that is almost linear, and which, continued upward through a short interval, leads to a limiting solubility of 1.98 per cent at the iron-graphite eutectic temperature1135°C. (2095°F.) instead of the commonly accepted value of about 1.7 per cent. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The samples of carbonyl iron, with the exception of those for microscopic examination, were cylinders 3.8 cm. long, 0.475 cm. in diameter. They were placed in a graphite holder and suspended in a vertical furnace, the temperature of which was controlled precisely by means of the resistance of the platinum winding.1 In the empty furnace the range of temperature over a distance of 4 cm, at the heat center was 9°C. (16°F.) but at a given location the temperature remained within ±0.5°C. (0.9°F.); it was measured by inserting a platinum-rhodium couple calibrated at the melting point of palladium, 1555°C. Since the presence of the sample probably improved the uniformity of temperature, it was decided to consider the average temperature of the sample to be 3°C. lower than the maximum measured in the empty furnace with the same setting of the controller. Data were obtained in the vicinity of two temperatures, 960°C. (1760°F.) and 1110°C. (2030°F.). The samples for microscopic examination, 2.2 cm. long, 0.475 cm. in diameter, were suspended individually on pure iron wire; for these no temperature correction was applied. Stabilization Committee was named in 1932 to ascer-tain whether some practical substitute could be devised for the Rule of Capture, which was generally credited with being the major cause of instability in the Petroleum Industry. After considerable intercommittee correspondence a letter was received from. E. DeGolyer under date of Jan. 25, 1935, in which he discussed the possibility of modifying rather than discarding the Rule of Capture. He summarized his proposal as follows:
