DISCUSSION Fred C. Bond (Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Milwaukee)—This is a very complete description of the screened ore fine grinding installation at Lake Shore. The only important data which might be desired are the operating screen analyses and power consumption in each stage. The statement that the energy consumption, or kw-hr per ton, remains constant for all mill diameters is of great interest, but the opinion is widely held that the kw-hr per ton decreases as the mill diameter increases. More definite test work is needed to establish this point. Screened ore fine minding has been successful on hard Lake Shore ore &d on about equally hard South African Rand ore. However, it is still not determined whether it would be successful on ores of average or less than average hardness. It is possible that with softer ores the consumption of ore pebbles might be exceedingly high, or might even exceed the available supply. Also, the softer feed might result in a rapid buildup of harmful intermediate sizes in the mill circuit. These factors can be determined only by a full scale or long pilot mill test. In any case the Lake Shore staff is to be congratulated for this pioneering work. Bunting. S. Crocker (author's reply)—As requested, the operating screen analyses and Bower consumption for each of the four stages of pebble milling are given, see Table XII. The fist three stages are in series circuit; the last stage is in closed circuit. The primary circuit had rock feed averaging 124 g per piece and the final stages rock feed weighing 63 g. The intermediate stages had mixtures of the two. Regarding Mr. Bond's statement that "the opinion is widely held that the kw-hr per ton decreases as the mill diameter increases," I would say that I have frequently been told this but have never yet been shown any evidence or seen any evidence published that would prove this statement. It may be true that some of the big mills recently installed have mechanical power savers such as micarta bearings and better lubrication, but as far as the power consumed inside the mill is concerned, we at Lake Shore think that it varies as D2 .", and that is all. We published extensive information on this point in our 1939 paper. Recently Mr. Banks at Consolidated published the figures on his 10 ft 8 in. x 12 ft 0 in. rod mill. As reported in this discussion by the writer: we calculated the power necessary to run this mill based on our 7x6-ft rod mill to within 1 pct of the actual power reported by Mr.

LESTER GUTTMAN* The question of whether classical thermodynamics alone imposes any lower limit to solid solubilities was raised during a discussion among various members of the Institute for the Study of Metals. Although our conclusions are not new,1 they may be worth reiterating, since confusion on this subject seems to persist. In a binary system (A,B), the conditions for equilibrium, at constant pressure and temperature, between a solid solution and a liquid solution are µAs = µAl [la] µBs = µbl [lb] Here µ denotes the chemical potential either of component A or B, as shown by the subscripts, and the superscripts s and l refer to the solid and liquid solutions, respectively. These two conditions are just sufficient to determine the compositions of both phases. Suppose, however, that the solid phase is found experimentally not to contain any of component B; then we cannot evaluate µbs, which is defined by Here nAs and nBs are the number of mols of A and B, respectively, in the solid, whose free energy is Fs. Eq lb cannot be used, but it is no longer needed: we stated at the outset that the solid has the composition "pure A," and only the liquid composition need now be determined, from Eq la. All the equilibrium properties of the system can be derived from Eq la rigorously and simply. Hence there is no purely thermodynamic reason to exclude phase diagrams which show precisely zero solid solubility. Marsh2 has objected to such diagrams as implying that even the transformation of pure A begins at the eutectic temperature. In any case, the user of the diagram must have a certain minimum knowledge of how to interpret it, and it would seem simpler to remember the general rule that eutectic temperatures have no significance for pure components, rather than to show, say, by broken lines, on a scale which will often be exaggerated, a hypothetical solid-solubility about which we know only that it is less than a certain amount. The case of an intermetallic compound in equilibrium with a binary liquid solution does not require a separate treatment since nothing in the foregoing was dependent on the nature of the components. Therefore, thermodynamics alone does not exclude the possibility that (intermetallic) compounds may exist with compositions always precisely those given by their chemical formulas. With the aid of extra-thermodynamic methods, one may conclude that the solubility of one solid in another is never exactly zero. On the other hand, one would generally expect that the solubility will be small unless the components resemble one another (as do the metals), or form weakly-bound crystals. Therefore, it is useful to know that when there is no direct evidence for solid-solubility, one may neglect it without violating thermodynamic principles.

ARE we a "have" or a "have-not" nation in our domestic supply of metals and minerals? Impinging on the ears of a people weary of war and faced with the problems of reconversion to peace, the import of this question has built up with the momentum of an avalanche. Stemming from statistics cited by Pehrson and accelerated by the pessimistic and possibly biased statements of Ickes, hardly an issue of any technical periodical dealing with mining has appeared during the past year but within whose pages was to be found some comment, some discussion of the question: Are we a "have" or a "have-not" nation? We have proved commercial reserves of high-grade iron ore in the Lake Superior region sufficient for 22 years, based upon the prewar rate of consumption; commercial copper reserves to last only 34 years, one fourth being inferred ore; zinc sufficient for nineteen years, over half being inferred; lead for twelve years, two thirds of which is inferred; mercury for only three years. So read the figures. Although admitting that these figures may be extended by new discoveries, by the use of marginal and submarginal ore, and by further technological advances, are we nevertheless to assume complete pessimism in the acceptance of the meaning of these statistics; are we to expect a rapidly increasing dependence upon foreign sources of mineral supply; are we to believe that we are at or near the peak of the "metal age" as has been held by Theodore J. Hoover? Or is some more optimistic viewpoint possible?

Internal friction characteristics and temperature dependence of the torsion modulus for iodide zirconium containing 2.4 pct Hf were investigated, using a low frequency pendulum technique. The internal friction curve consists of a background which increases as the temperature increases, a maximum at 860°C apparently a background due to the al-lotropic transformation, a maximum due to grain boundary relaxation with an associated heat of activation of 58,000 cal per mol, and an anomaly below 350°C which may be associated with a precipitation perphenomenon, Oxygen in below small amounts reduces the grain boundary maximum substantially. The variation of the torsion modulus at 20°C was found to be 3450 Kg per mm2 for the zirconium used in the present work. IT is well known that small amounts of certain solutes materially affect the ductility of zirconium. Lely and Hamburger,&apos; as early as 1914, found that high purity zirconium exhibited a remarkable ductility, while Fast&apos; has shown that oxygen and nitrogen can cause substantia1 embrittlement. Treco" has recently demonstrated that the ductility decreases sharply with the oxygen content, and that 2 atomic pct O2 embrittles zirconium to such an extent that cold working is impossible. The marked decrease in ductility is difficult to understand in view of the fact that Domagala and McPherson4 report the solid solubility of oxygen in zirconium to be 29 atomic pct at 500 °C. Another metal which behaves much the same as zirconium in this respect is titanium. Pratt et al." investigated the internal friction characteristics of titanium and the effect of oxygen on the internal friction values. It is evident that internal friction measurements are of value for studying grain boundary segregation, as shown by Pratt et al. for oxygen in titanium, by Pearson for oxygen in copper, and by Maringer and Schwope for oxygen in molybdenum. With this in view, the internal friction characteristics of zirconium and the qualitative effect of oxygen on the grain boundary relaxation phenomenon were investigated. Materials and Experimental Procedure The zirconium used in the present work was supplied by the Foote Mineral Co. in the form of wire 0.05 in. diam. The analysis supplied by the manufacturer indicates the amount of hafnium as 2.4 pct, less than 0.01 pct O less than 0.01 pct N,, less than 0.02 pct H,, and less than 0.001 pct C. Additional spectro-graphic analysis indicates the other main impurities as follows: 0.01 pct Fe, 0.05 pct Si, 0.008 pct Cu, <0.005 pct W, <0.001 pct Al, <0.05 pct Mg, <0.001 pct Ni, <0.02 pct Ca, and <0.01 pct Ti. Microscopic examination of the material in the as received condition revealed very fine grains with numerous twins. Specimens were annealed either in situ in the internal friction apparatus or in evacuated silica tubes in an auxiliary furnace. When the specimens were annealed in the auxiliary furnace, they were wrapped in identical zirconium wire to prevent contamination by the container. Metallographic sections were taken in all cases. Some were taken from the specimens used for internal friction measurements after completion of the experiments, while others were taken from control specimens at intermediate stages of the experiments. lnternal friction values were obtained by measuring the free decay of a low frequency torsion pendulum (1 cycle per sec), the suspension of which was

The actice slip plane in InSb is found to be of the {111} type by using the method of two-tmce anulysis. Measurements of the rotation of the tensile axis with increasing plastic shear strain indicate that the tnacroscopic slip direction is a <110>. Recrystal-lization is first observed at a sheav strain of about 70 pct for a crystal deformed at a temperatzcre of 473° C and at a shear strain rate of 2.90 times 10- %ecc-I; the dislocation density corresponding to this value of the strain is 1 x 108 em-&apos;. At a shear strain of about 170 pct, the recrystallization process is complete. This appears to be the fimt time re-crystallization has heen observed in a semiconductor. V HE operation of the {Hi} glide plane in Ge was first noted by Gallagher.&apos; This finding was confirmed by Treuting who also extended the result to Si. Using X-ray techniques, Treuting3 demonstrated that the macroscopic slip direction in Ge was of the <110> type. The choice of the (111) <110> slip system in Ge is exected since in the diamond-type structure the {Ill7 plane is the plane of highest density and the <110> direction is the direction of closest packing.4 There is little reason to expect that the glide elements of InSb are different from those of Ge, since the zinc-blende structure characteristic of InSb is quite similar to the structure of Ge. With regard to InSb, Allen5 has indicated that the glide plane is the {111} type. There appears to be no quantitative determination of the glide direction, however. The present work was undertaken to establish both the glide plane and glide direction in InSb and also to see if recrystallization occurs at large shear strains. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Mechanical Deformation. The single crystals of InSb used in this investigation were deformed in uni-axial tension. The tensile axis of the specimens was [145] and the periphery was bounded by (111) and (321) planes as shown in Fig. 1. The metallographi-cally polished specimens were deformed in a dynamic atmosphere of He, using an Instron machine. The tensile tests were performed at temperatures in the range of 300°C to the melting point (525OC) and at shear strain-rates varying between 1.94 X 104 sec-&apos; to 1.94 x 103 sec-&apos;. Additional details concerning the preparation and deformation of the specimens have been presented previously.&apos; Analysis of the Glide Elements. The traces of the active slip plane in both (111) and (321) planes were analyzed according to the usual method of two-trace analysis." The macroscopic slip direction was determined by measuring the rotation of the tensile axis as a function of plastic strain,8 These measurements were made from Laue back-reflection X-ray photographs. The X-ray beam was perpendicular to the (111) plane. A given crystal was used for only one measurement of the rotation of the tensile axis after it had been strained to a predetermined value. Therefore, care was taken at all times to insure that the X-ray beam was parallel to the [Ill ] direction of all the samples. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Glide Plane. After 3.4 pct plastic shear-strain, at a temperature of 369°C and a shear strain-rate of 1.94 x 104 sec-&apos;, the slip traces on the (111) and (3.21) planes appear as in Figs. 2(a) and 2(b), respectively. The results of an analysis of these glide markings demonstrate that the slip plane is (111). The methodology employed to develop a digital simulation of the Brenda Mines Ltd., Peachland, B. C., secondary crushing plant is described. Methodology includes data acquisition, data adjustment, model building, and the construction of a simulator structure. The simulator was utilized to study the effects of secondary and tertiary crusher close side settings, secondary screen opening, plant feed rate, and percent + 1 in. in the feed on the following responses: percent - 1/2 in. in the final product, plant reduction ratio, circulating load ratio, and screen efficiency. Results are presented in graphical form.

At the meeting of this Institute in February 1933,I presented a paper on potash development in southeastern New Mexico1, which contained a brief review of the Geological Survey&apos;s 20-year search for commercial sources of soluble potash minerals and of the events that led to the discovery, exploration, and first development of the deposits in that state. AS a more comprehensive review of the subject was published in December2, the present paper is intended only to discuss recent developments in the domestic potash industry, particularly in New Mexico. A summary of the findings of potash in the Permian Basin, by G. R. Mansfield and W. B. Lang, geologists of the United States Geological Survey, is now in process of publication by the University of Texas and will be omitted from this paper. In New Mexico prospecting for potassium salts during the past two years has increased materially the known area of commercial deposits; development has resulted in an increase from one to three in the number of shafts and the starting of a fourth; an increase of annual productive capacity to 1,000,000 tons of crude salts, or 250,000 tons of K2O; and an increase in annual refining capacity to 140,000 tons of muriate of 62.5 per cent grade. Construction has been completed to increase still further the production of high-grade salts. In California the American Potash & Chemical Co., operating on Searles Lake brines, has increased its plant capacity from about 100,000 tons to 180,000 tons of muriate a year and is now producing soda ash and salt cake in addition to potash and borax. Potash production from cement-plant and industrial-alcohol wastes remains unimportant.

MOST of the roofing granules produced in Pennsylvania are made by two companies at three plants. The Advance Industrial Supply Co. has three quarries and a mill at Gladhill Station, in southern Adams County. The Funkhouser Company is actively engaged in mining, quarrying and milling at Charmian, about one mile west of Gladhill Station, and at Delta, in southern York County. These three plants produced approximately 100,000 short tons of granules in 1943. The production of roofing granules in 1937 for the whole country was only about 500,000 tons, generally indicating the large growth of the industry since that time. The fundamentals of producing roofing granules were discussed comprehensively by G. W. Josephson in a paper before the Industrial Minerals Division in October 1943 (Mining Technology, March 1944). The purpose of this paper is to describe the actual methods of mining the rock and milling it to make roofing granules, as practiced by the three Pennsylvania plants. MINING AND MILLING Funkhouser Company (Delta) The Funkhouser Company, near Delta, in southern York County, Pennsylvania, operates three joined quarries and a mine in the Peach Bottom slate. The joined quarries extend 1200 ft. in a northeast southwest direction along the strike of the slate cleavage and are about 200 ft. wide. The working face is about 45 ft. high. The quarrying operation is rather simple: Ingersoll-Rand Jackhamers, 1-in. and 1 1/4-in., with hollow drill steel, are used to undercut the quarry face with10-ft. holes. The face is "blown" and allowed to slump on the quarry floor. Loaded by a Marion electric shovel into trucks, the shattered rock is taken to the primary crusher 2500 ft. away. In addition to the normal quarrying operations, a drift into the northeast wall of the middle quarry was begun about 1935 and has advanced about 2000 ft. since then. Rooms have been driven at angles to the drift along choice beds of slate. The drifts and rooms have a roof more than 35 ft. high and the main drift and rooms are all more than 40 ft. wide. There is no cribbing at any place in the mine. Several of the rooms were driven upward on a 5º slope and in some of them there was stoping. Ingersoll-Rand Jackhamers are used, and only wet drilling is practiced. When visited in January 1940, an electric shovel was operating at the head of the drift, scooping up the slate blasted out of the working face. This, too, is trucked to the primary crusher. Some of the better quality slate is saved for making slate shingles. The primary crusher, which is a No. 30 McCulley gyratory, receives the slate from the trucks and crushes it to about 2-in. size (Fig. I). This product travels by a 30-in. belt conveyor to Niagara vibrating screens with 2-in. holes. The minus 2-in. product moves to a storage silo by bucket

The movement of hydrogen in two-phase Zircaloy-2 under the influence of a thermal gradient was studied in specimens of cylindrical geometry. A gross displacement of hydrogen toward the cooler regions of the specimen was observed with consequent copious precipitation of 6-ztrconium (ZrH) there. The kinetics of the diffusion are analyzed and discussed. X HE temperature-gradient redistribution of hydrogen in a-Zircaloy-2 has been treated both theoretically and experimentally Hydrogen moves toward the cold side of the temperature gradient until a steady state has been established; tendency for further hydrogen movement because of temperature differences is nullified by the tendency to move in the reverse direction because of the concentration gradient. The steady state condition is described by the equation in which iV is the concentration of hydrogen at a point in the specimen corresponding to absolute temperature T, R is the gas constant,k is a constant of integration, and Q is a parameter called the heat of transport, characteristic Of the particular system. The value of Q has been determined for hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 by several investigators, using Eq. [11. There is considerable variation in the results, the cause of which has not been resolved; reported values lie in the range 3 to 6 kcal per mole. The physical situation for two-phase thermal migration is much more complex. The -phase boundary for the solubility of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 ranges from a concentration of 25 ppm at 200°C to a maximum of about 600 ppm at 550°C.4a Thus, if the concentration of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 is sufficiently great (>600 ppm), the specimen will be entirely two-phase, consisting of a matrix of a-Zircaloy-2 surrounding particles of zirconium hydride. At time zero, with a temperature gradient imposed, the relative amounts of hydride and a-phase in each infinite-simally thin isothermal section of the specimen can be determined from the phase diagram by the lever rule. Moreover, the concentration of hydrogen in the matrix phase varies from point to point, following the a solubility line. Over most of this temperature range (<450°C) 6 phase, Fig. 3, has a constant concentration.5 The diffusion rate toward the cold side should be governed by 1) the slope of the a solubility line and 2) the temperature gradient, The extra complication of two-phase thermal diffusion lies in the fact that migration of hydrogen would leave the a-phase concentration gradient unaffected, since it is fixed at any temperature only by the solubility; gross concentration changes would reflect only the relative amounts of matrix and hydride, which could vary continuously at every point. IN an investigation of the rolling and recrystalliz-ing textures obtained from single crystals of Si-Fe, Koh and Dunn included specimens in the (111) [lie] orientation.1,2 This note reports some additional results obtained on samples of this orientation set aside for further study. After, primary recrystallization longer annealing treatments at 980°C produced only normal grain growth; after 16 hr at 980°C the largest grains were approximately 0.010 to 0.020 in. in diam. The orientations of 13 of the larger grains were found by the transmission Laue method. The unidentified (110) poles of these grains have been added to the (110) pole figure obtained after primary recrystallization2 to give the plot shown in Fig. 1. When grain identifications are also included, such a plot reveals the following. Two orientations agree almost exactly with the peak pole ,density positions of component B of the primary recrystallization texture, one with component A, and one with component C. All the remaining orientations except one have (110) poles near weaker and unidentified pole density peaks. In fact, the correlation is good enough for an identification of eight components. Previously only components A, B, and C were certain. The results are perhaps even more informative when combined with the (110) pole figure of the cold-rolled crystal to give the plot shown in Fig. 2. Each of the 13 orientations is identified and uniquely determined by selecting two (110) poles per crystal, which are 90" apart. The plot shows that every grain of the 13, except grain 6, has a (110) pole in common with a (110) pole concentration of the cold-rolled crystal. The orientation relationship with the cold-rolled orientation may be expressed as approximately 25" rotations about <110> axes, which is in agreement with the results found for coarse-grained primary recrystallization.2 If primary recrystallization had occurred according to the <110> rule without preference, there would have been 12 components. Actually our limited data reveals nine of the possible 12. The integrated pole figure also shows preferences among them, since three are considerably stronger than the rest. In addition to the above direct information, the following conclusions may be drawn. Primary recrystallization of the (111) [110] cold-rolled crystal produces a limited number of weak and strong components with the larger than average primary grains from these components related to the cold-rolled crystal by 25° <110> relationships. In arriving at this conclusion of limited orientations the (111) [110] orientation has to be ruled out as a source of large primaries for two reasons. First, growth in this orientation was not observed, despite an expected high grain boundary mobility (due to its 25" <110> relationship with every component of the texture). Secondly, primary recrystallization usually produces grains in new orientations, particularly in a single orientation matrix; but (111) [110] is not new. Other orientations besides those of the <110> type may be considered unlikely, of course, because the <110> relationship holds quite well for primary recrystallization2 and should produce the large primaries. There are exceptions to this rule, but probably not enough to provide large

IT is only in recent years that substantial progress has been made in developing a physico-chemical picture of the solid state. The molecular concept, so useful in dealing with gases, was naturally carried over to the field of crystalline solids; it has resulted in the firm implanting of erroneous concepts that only now are being eradicated successfully. Two simply written and effective books on the subject are Crystal Chemistry by Stillwell1 and An Introduction to Crystal Chemistry by Evans.&apos; A more complete treatment of the subject is available in a book by Wells.&apos; The monograph by Hückel4 also touches on a subject most easily perceived by reference to the brief introduction by Bragg,5 that master of the field. These texts make it clear that while some solids are built of molecules, many are built of ions, others of atoms connected in the form of giant molecules, and still others of cations and electrons. The various lattices in which these entities are systematically arranged, the joint use of several of these entities, and the transitional character of some of the bonds make for the great variety of crystalline solids. The purpose of this paper is to point out a most important corollary of present views on the structure of solids. In this connection the classification of solids in Table I is helpful. Atomic crystals are those formed by the noble gases, e.g., helium and argon. They are soft, sublime at very low temperature, of very low specific gravities, and not encountered in ores. Molecular crystals are uncommon among inorganic materials, common among organic materials. Typical examples from both inorganic and organic fields are sulphur, iodine, naphthalene, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride. These crystals are soft and have low specific gravities; where the molecules are small, the sublimation temperature is low. Filament and sheet crystals are rare. They are typified by elemental selenium and elemental arsenic, respectively. Graphite and molybdenite come near being sheet crystals. These crystals are soft in some directions, tough in others, sublime at various temperatures. Diamantine crystals, typified by diamond, are very few in number, stable at high temperatures, and extremely hard. Ionic crystals are common. Most salts, acids, and alkalies belong in the two classes of ionic crystals; examples are rock salt, fluorite, calcite, and angle-site. The salts, acids, and alkalies that do not belong in these classes are more properly regarded as transitional between ionic crystals, framework crystals, and diamantine crystals, e.g., ice and quartz. Fiber crystals are relatively uncommon mineral-ogically speaking, but common in the fields of living processes. Examples are asbestos, silk, cellulose, and wool. Many fiber crystals are so little known even now that their crystallinity may be doubted. Layer crystals, among the more interesting and useful of solids, include a wide variety of substances

IT may be taken for granted that a mine official knows his duties, as outlined by the bituminous mining laws of the State, he knows how coal should be mined and transported, and he has judgment on any possibly unsafe condition in his mine. Certainly, if he is weak on any of these points, there are definite ways in which he can acquire the needed knowledge. If with this knowledge the mine official has the necessary practical experience to bring self-confidence, he stands before the world as a man who knows his job. There is, however, another side to his work, one not found in hooks, a side even that may not be learned at the face even though one spends a lifetime there. The actual duties a mine official knows and performs are the tangible and definite things about his work. There are other things which may be termed intangible, because they are hard to pin down and see, and. which appear to be of equal importance in successfully handling a job and which in time determine the very success of the company itself.

Transition in the underground coal industry, begun with the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, should be completed midway in the 1972-80 period. Surprisingly, many of the far reaching effects of this act have been, for the most part, beneficial to the industry from the standpoint of health, safety and basic operating standards. Production has dwindled, but the next few years will see production declines level out. Average declines of approximately 27% have been recorded since passage of the 1969 act, with costs increasing an average of $1.50 per ton throughout the industry. Nationwide averages presently are in the range of 14 tons per man-shift, and by 1980 this may be further reduced to a 10-ton per man-shift average for the industry. But in spite of the many temporary set-backs affecting the industry, the marketing opportunities are clearly visible. Due primarily to the energy squeeze facing the U.S. over the near term, the &apos;underground coal operator is and will be enjoying unusual leverage in selling his product.

THE success of various operations in the manufacture of optical glass depends, in a large measure, on the ability to maintain proper heat control. A good pyrometer system is, therefore, a very necessary part of the equipment needed. Men of long experience in dealing with high temperatures, who have acquired through constant practice the ability of judging approximate temperatures by means of color, are undoubtedly valuable, but even the most competent are not as reliable as a good pyrometer system. They admit that their ability to judge accurately varies from day to day and that their judgment is affected considerably by the condition of the sky, whether it is clear or cloudy. Besides, where it is a matter of only a few weeks to train a man to operate a pyrometer system, it takes about as many years to train him to judge temperatures by the state of incandescence. The pyrometer outfit in use in the glass plant of the Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. consists of the following: Platinum elements, optical pyrometers; base-metal elements, indicators, potentiometers, and recording pyrometers. Platinum Elements and Optical Pyrometers.-Temperature control in - the melting operation is of such great importance that it is very desirable to know the exact temperatures, relative temperatures being of little value. The use of the platinum element is to determine the rate of heating or cooling of the furnace. The platinum couple is installed in either the crown or the wall of the furnace. It is placed first in a porcelain protecting tube and this is placed in a permanently fixed fireclay tube projecting from 1 1/2 to 2 in. into the fire-chamber. It has been found impractical to use the platinum couple for determining exact temperatures of the melting furnace, for the platinum element deteriorates rather rapidly at the high temperatures used, 2500° to 2700° F. Definition of Ae 1-Just as we call A 1 of rising temperature Ac 1, and that of falling temperature Ar 1, so we may give the symbol Ae 1 to the equilibrium position of A 1. Preliminary Assumptions.-In deciding what weight to assign the various data, and indeed what data are to count, three assumptions should be made. These are: 1. The corollary from the phase rule, that the temperature of Ae 1 is constant and independent of the carbon content, though, of course, it may be changed by the presence of other elements. 2. That because neither in heating nor in cooling can the transformation begin before the temperature reaches Ae 1, though it may be delayed by lag till after the temperature has passed beyond Ae 1, therefore Ae 1 should be at or below the observed beginning of Ac 1 and at or above the observed beginning of Ar 1, and, a fortiori, it should be at or below the observed maximum of Ac 1, and at or above the observed maximum of Ar 1. It may be necessary to take these maxima into consideration in view of the experimental difficulty of detecting these beginnings.

THE particular field of application of machines utilizing air currents as the primary separating medium is in the cleaning of fine sizes of bituminous coal. Approximately 18,000,000 tons of bituminous coal was cleaned by air machines in 1947, but such machines have not yet been applied in the cleaning of anthracite. This chapter is limited to a description of the processes in which the separation between coal and refuse depends mainly on a difference in specific gravity. Dry processes depending on differences in coefficient of friction, shape, or other property, are described in chapter 17. The possibility of using air for the separation of coal from refuse was recognized early by mining men and many attempts were made to develop commercial machines. Some of these early machines are described by Berrisford,1 Chapman and Mott,2 and Mitchell.3 Only two machines are extensively used today in the United States, the Stump air-flow jig and the American oscillating table. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF AIR CLEANING MACHINES The principles of gravity concentration and the properties of air as a medium for separation were explained in chapter 9. It was pointed out that because of the low density of air a medium of sufficient density has to be built with the material itself. Hence there must be some device to impart to the bed the necessary mobility for proper classification. It was also noted that the compressibility of the air may cause "geysering" of the bed and disturbance of the hindered-settling classification if the correct balance of conditions is not maintained. Most devices use a vertical upward current of air through the bed of material. They differ by the method of imparting mobility to the bed and the method of removing the refuse. In general terms, the air machines can be divided into three types: 1. Pneumatic jigs where the air current is pulsated. 2. Pneumatic tables where the refuse is diverted from the direction of flow of the clean coal by a system of riffles fixed to the deck.

The first Rodpeb mill ever built and placed in full scale successful operation went onstream in mid- 1960 at Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co.&apos;s newly modernized portland cement production plant at Nashville, Tenn. It replaced a third stage of fine crushing and two 7x22-ft Compeb mills in the wet raw slurry grinding department. The Rodpeb mill at Nashville is similar in appearance to a Compeb mill but is larger. The mill, which operates in open circuit, is 9 ft in diameter and 38 ft long. The rod compartment is 12 ft long, with the rods being 11.5 ft in length and ranging in diameter from 4 in. down to about 1 in. The weight of the rod charge is 100,000 lb. The liners of the rod compartment are of the Lorain design.

COPPER ore from Kennecott Copper&apos;s Ray mine, about 60 miles southeast of Phoenix, Ariz., is concentrated at the company&apos;s mill at Hayden, some 18 miles south of the mine. The Hayden mill is currently treating 16,000 tons of ore per day by flotation, using raconite, a crude butyl xanthate, as a collector for the sulfide copper minerals and lime as a pyrite depressant.1 The ore contains significant amounts of nonsulfide copper minerals, but recovery of these values has been low. The Hayden mill is now being modified to provide for treatment of future ores by leach- precipitation-flotation (L-P-F). This modification, costing about $5 million, is expected to reduce the loss of nonsulfide copper values and improve overall copper recovery by an additional 2 lb per ton of ore.

FOLLOWING the deformation 01 zinc monocrys-tals, sharply bent basal planes are observed near several types of inhomogeneities. Three of these in-homogeneities have characteristics which are quite regular so that they can be studied and analyzed. These are compressive kink bands, "deformation bands," and the inhomogeneities near end restraints. The present paper describes experiments in which "deformation bands" were artificially produced, and bend plane phenomena are discussed in terms of dislocation theory. Also, two new bend plane phenomena are described. The importance of bend plane phenomena in the deformation of crystals is not widely recognized. Many phenomena may be explained in a manner similar to the discussion in this paper. Jillson1 has pointed out that the "punching effect" in zinc is a bend plane phenomenon and is not caused by prismatic slip.&apos; Bowles3 has suggested that they may be involved in diffusionless phase changes. Cahn4 has discussed the role of bend plane formation in the polygonization of zinc. Experimental Work Tensile Kink Bands: Because of the geometrical similarity between "deformation bands" and "kink bands" (compare Fig. 1 of this paper with Fig. 1 of the paper by Hess and Barrett"), the band shown in Fig. 1 of this paper will be called a "tensile kink band," and that shown by Hess and Barrett will be called a "compressive kink band." It is felt that the term "deformation band" should be reserved for banded structures in polycrystalline materials such as iron." Tensile kink bands seem to form spontaneously in aluminum crystals deformed by tensile loading.7-10 In zinc and cadmium crystals they do not form in good, carefully loaded specimens.&apos;." However, tensile kink bands can be produced artificially in zinc crystals. The present authors did this by scratching one of the flat surfaces of triangular crystals transversely with a sharp needle. Natural tensile kink bands caused by inhomogeneities sometimes appeared in deformed crystals which were identical in appearance with the artificially produced ones. Zinc monocrystals were grown by the Bridgman method in graphite molds. Chemically pure zinc (99.999+ pct Zn) was used and the molds were sealed inside evacuated pyrex tubes during growth. The crystal cross sections were equilateral triangles with a typical base of 0.210 in. The artificial kink band shown in Fig. 1 is typical of tensile kink bands in zinc. The band lies between two bend planes which run from upper right to lower left and is inclined oppositely to the slip bands which are sharply bent at the two bend planes. The general form of the artificial tensile kink bands was independent of the scratch depth (1 to 5 mils deep) and also independent of which side was scratched. These variables did cause variations, however. Deep scratches produced more localized kink bands than light scratches. Also, if the angle between the slip plane traces and a transverse scratch varied appreciably among the three sides, then localization of the resulting kink bands also varied. Furthermore, if the slip direction lay nearly parallel to the scratched side, the band was more developed near the scratched side than at the opposite edge. Scratches produced tensile kink bands for crystal orientations from xo = 15" to x, = 75". Fig. 2 shows a scratched crystal after deformation. One triangular side lies in the plane of the photograph. The right hand tensile kink band was produced by a transverse scratch on the upper right side. The next two kink bands were the result of scratches on the front surface. The kink band at the left was caused by a scratch on the lower back side. All four bands have the same general form. A longitudinal scratch was also made on the crystal shown in Fig. 2 to determine the effect of a scratch on the critical shear stress. The critical shear stress of the scratched region was 33.9 g per sq mm compared to 24.4 g per sq mm for the un-scratched region above it. Fig. 3 shows Laue patterns of the crystal shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 3a shows the pattern of the undeformed crystal. The orientation was x, = 21°, A, = 31". After deformation, Fig. 3b was made of the homogeneously deformed portion of the crystal. The spots are compact but split into two halves. This region was elongated 45 pct and its orientation was x = 14", X = 20"; the sine law predicts x = 14", A = 20.5". Fig. 3c was taken near the center of the middle tensile kink band of Fig. 2. The pattern shows a range of orientations and polygonization in this region. The spread in orientation was due to the fact that the basal planes were curved (see Fig. 1) rather than flat as in the ideal case. Some may also have been the result of elastic distortions and "local curvatures." The orientation range was x = 23" to 32", A = 30" to 42". It is apparent from Fig. 3 that the material inside and outside the kink band rotated in opposite directions with respect to the tension axis during deformation. The orientation calculated from the ideal configuration of Fig. 9,
