The torsional deformation of aluminum and magnesium crystals is investigated, with particular reference to the dependence of proportional limit on crystal orientation. The proportional limit is found to be governed by the average value of the resolved shear stress on the most highly stressed slip systems, but the proportional limit does not strictly obey a critical-resolved-shear-stress law. The behavior of a cylindrical single crystal stressed in tension is well known: plastic flow begins when the resolved shear stress on the most highly stressed slip system reaches a critical value. There is much less understanding of the effect of torsion on such a crystal and on the way in which the critical-resolved-shear-stress law should be applied to torsional deformation. In the present paper particular attention is paid to the dependence of plastic yielding on crystal orientation and lesser attention to the mechanism of flow after yielding has occurred. New work on aluminum and magnesium crystals is presented, and previous results obtained in this laboratory on magnesium1 are re-examined. STRESS DISTRIBUTION The problems involved in torsional deformation of single crystals are due entirely to the complexity of the stress distribution. In tension, if loading conditions are perfect, the shear stress on any particular slip plane is completely uniform over the entire area of that plane. In torsion, on the other hand, the stress on any selected plane in a particular direction varies not only from center to edge of the specimen but also around its perimeter. It is convenient to express the stress at any point in terms of t0, which is the shear stress acting at the surface of a cylindrical specimen on a plane normal to the axis and in a direction tangential to the cylinder. At point P of Fig. 1 this stress acts in the direction of axis 2 and is given by To = 2T/pr3 [1] where T is the applied torque and r the specimen radius. This stress can be resolved on any chosen slip system, and details are given in the Appendix. Let P be the point on the specimen surface where the stress is to be evaluated; P is defined by its angular distance A from an arbitrary reference line through 0 normal to the axis. his line is usually taken as the direction of incidence of the X-ray beam used to determine the crystal orientation.) Identified and utilized Arizona salt deposits are of two ages: 1) Permian in the Colorado Plateau, and 2) Tertiary in the Basin and Range country. Uses include: a) storage of energy fluids in man-made solution cavities in both Permian (Supai Formation) and Tertiary (Luke salt body) salt and b) production of marketable products by solution and evaporation of tertiary salt. The two liquid petroleum storage Projects have a combined storage capacity in excess of 380 million L (100 million gal). Current production of salt products approximates 32 kt/a (32,000 stpy). Increasing demand for both storage and salt products is anticipated.

Longwall coal mining is a growing mining technique in the United States. However, very little premining exploration data are collected presently by coal companies to 1) select coal winning equipment, 2) select and design face supports and supports in gate and tail entries, or 3) optimize operational parameters such as length, width, and orientation of face. The authors are of the opinion that much of the data needed for mine planning and design for longwall mining can be obtained during exploration. In this paper, the authors identify the data requirements, discuss how these data can be obtained during exploration, propose an exploration program and estimate the cost to obtain the necessary data.

The question of attainment of competitive nuclear electric power is of interest to uranium producers because the rate of attainment of this goal determines the date when there will be a solid, non-political, domestic uranium market. It is a burning question to those of us in the civilian nuclear power business, because our entire business future hinges on how well, and how soon, we can make electricity from nuclear reactions at prices comparable to electricity from coal. For an idea of the magnitudes involved, consider that the first fuel load of the Dresden (Illinois) nuclear power station, plus spares, will be about 90 tons of 1.5 pct UO2. This requires about two-and- a-half times as much natural uranium oxide feed to the diffusion plant, or 225 tons. This, in turn, represents about a month's production from the nearby Uranium Reduction Co. mill. Note also that the 180,000 kw electric output of the Dresden station will be about 0.1 pct of the national electric generating capacity in 1960.

CHROMIUM is but one hundred and thirty years of age-a mere youngster as related to many metals that' have speeded world progress. It was Vauquelin of France who proved conclusively that the so called red lead of. Siberia contained a new element. The variety and characteristic colors of the compounds suggested the name chromium. He also succeeded in reducing oxide of chromium to the metallic form and described the product as very brittle, infusible, needle- like crystals on which acids had very feeble action. His metal was not pure chromium, of course; it must have contained appreciable carbon in the combined form as a result of reducing the oxide by carbon at high temperatures. Vauquelin's description in 1798 of this work is a gem-indeed, literally, he went so far as to discover the presence of chromium oxide in the emerald. The metallic product did not seem to interest Vauquelin greatly, but a new chemical industry began shortly after his discoveries.

AMERICANS like engines, but more than anything they like powerful engines, and next to that they want them quiet, silent, smooth; perhaps a slight purr might be permitted, but they must not knock. To provide a gasoline to fit all these requirements, American petroleum technologists have experimented for years, and mounting octane numbers of the gasolines the refiners have produced both before and during the war bear witness to their success. The question on everyone's mind now is what may we expect in the way of engine fuel in the postwar period? The gasoline drouth during the war rationing, the inconvenience of doing without a car were major annoyances to all motorists, but they put up with them pretty cheerfully for the most part. However, now that the war is over, and the jalopies are all out and the better cars have been taken off the jacks and brought out on the road, the call is for "Some of that good gas-fill her up, if you please."

A. A. Holland, Consulting Engineer, Toronto, Ont.-I noticed in this discussion of locations in which radium is found, no mention is made of the recent deposits discovered in Ontario. While radium is not a subject with which I am very familiar, I took an interest in this deposit on account of its novel occurrence. It is found in Haliburton County, near Wilberforce, Ontario, associated with a quartz free pegmatite, in a "break" that I understand can be traced for two miles. This "break" marks the contact between the limestone and syenite and contains numerous cavities or vugs. The gangue, on account of its deep purple, appears to :be amethyst.

Shovel To further increase the efficiency in the production of their foundry sand, the American Silica Sand Co. has purchased a new and improved shovel that will be used for loading trucks at their Reynolds Pit. The [ ] new shovel will greatly facilitate winter mining operations and make possible larger winter shipments of the company's foundry sand. The Reynolds Pit is one of three sand pits in the Ottawa district owned by American Silica which produce sand that is refined for foundry use. Circle No. 1 Electric Switches The Crane Electric Co. has just announced the production of their R-1000, a new rotating limit switch designed to control the travel of any rotating device requiring interruption or establishment of electrical current after a predetermined number of revolutions. It is useful for machinery, lifts, and other power equipment. The switch is presented in a finished case, 16 gage, reinforced, with walls of sufficient strength to hold the entire mechanism and all the parts in accurate alignment. The worm gear combination has a 60 to 1 ratio, sufficient for most industrial uses. The number of revolutions can still be increased by using various combinations of driving sprockets, either on the shaft of the switch, or on the sprocket of the unit controlled by the switch itself. These unique copper-deposits occur on the top of the Kaibab Plateau, in Cocouino county, Arizona, and extend from the northern edge of the Grand Cañon of the Colorado river to near the Utah State line. The best-developed deposits are near Jacobs Lake, 30 miles south of the Utah line, where they are 16 ft. thick, of unknown width, and are more or less continuous for 5 miles. From Jacobs Lake to the edge of the Grand Cañon, a distance of 40 miles, outcrops of ore have been found, but no explorations have been made except those of wandering cowboys and hunters. The Kaibab Plateau, the highest of the Colorado river plateaus, is a great uplift, about 90 miles long from north to south, and from 10 to 20 miles wide from east to west. Its southern face is the Grand Cañon; its western boundary a N—S. fault plane, which separates it from the Eanab Plateau, lying 1,500 ft. below. Its eastern edge is a monocline which brings the horizontal beds of the high plateau to the level of the plateaucountry of eastern Utah. The elevation of the plateau near the Colorado river is over 8,000 ft., and about 6,000 ft. at the Utah line. Its structure, as shown by the western fault, consists of about 500 ft. of Aubrey limestones underlain by 1,000 ft. of red sandstones. The limestone is the upper member of the Carboniferous, and is overlaid by the marls and shales of the Permian, 25 miles to the north on the Kanab Plateau. At the town of Kanab, near the Utah line, the Permian strata pass under the magnificent redsandstone cliffs of the Triassic, that rise to heights of 1,000 ft. above the desert. The Grand Cañon exposes a section a mile deep at the southern end of the plateau, showing all the formations from the Archean to the top of the Carboniferous.

RHENIUM has a melting point of 5750°F, the second highest value among the metals.1 Its refractory nature should thus make it a useful material at high temperatures. The only available data on the high-temperature properties of bulk rhenium are from the work of Flagella and Tarr.2 These authors have shown that, over a wide range of temperatures and stresses, no appreciable linearity exists in a log-log plot of the minimum creep rate or rupture life vs stress. The purpose of the present letter is to describe some exploratory experiments designed to study the creep rate-stress-temperature relation and other facets of the creep of rhenium. The tests were carried out in vacuum in the temperature range 2200" to 4000°F (0.43 to 0.72 Tm,) at stresses ranging from 4 to 20 ksi. The powder metallurgy rhenium was purchased as 0.04-in.-thick sheet. The sheet is nominally 99.97 pct pure with the major impurities being iron (70 ppm) and molybdenum (25 ppm). The sheet was machined into specimens having a 1-in. gage length and a 0.25-in. gage width. The specimens were preannealed in hydrogen at 3000°F for 1 hr. This treatment produced

In estimating production gas/oil ratios and oil recoveries from reservoirs containing highly volatile oils it is highly important to include condensate that may be recovered from the gas produced from the reservoir. The volume of the hydrocarbon liquid condensed from the production of the solution gas that has been liberated. in some reservoirs may equal or even exceed the volume of recoverable stock-tank oil as estimated by present methods. The usual procedure1, 2, 3 in estimating future reservoir performance includes use of relative permeability data of the reservoir rock to gas and oil and includes material-balance calculations utilizing data on the volume of the reservoir fluids, oil and gas production and reservoir pressure decline, and data on the physical properties of the initial reservoir fluids. The inaccuracy in the procedure results from the false assumption that all of the free or liberated gas that enters the well bore of reservoirs containing highly volatile oils remains in the gaseous phase as it is produced. This paper presents a method for estimating future reservoir performance and oil recoveries based on special labora. tory analyses of reservoir-oil samples and recognition of the additional volume of hydrocarbon liquid that will be recovered at various stages of depletion from a solution.gas.drive reservoir. The method also includes calculations of the volume and composition of the hydrocarbon liquids that can be recovered by processing the produced gas in a natural-gasoline plant. The development of the method resulted from a study of laboratory analyses of reservoir samples and of field data obtained from two reservoirs containing oil of the highly velatile type. Relatively high pressures and temperatures prevail in oil reservoirs discovered at the greater depths of present-day drilling. The contained fluids may have high saturation -Dressures and large volumes of gas in solution. The oils and gases under these conditions may be almost identical in compositions and densities.4,5 Also, engineers have noted that, for a number of oil reservoirs and especially the deeper reservoirs, the API gravity of the stock-tank oil increaees as the production gas/oil ratios increase. They attributed this increase in API gravity of the stock-tank oil to the formation of condensate as the liberated gas in the reservoir is being produced. SOURCE OF DATA FOR CALCULATIONS Subsurface oil samples and well-test data were obtained from the E. Constantin-Lambert Well No. 1 in the Elk City Field, Okla., to demonstrate the need for and a method of calculating future reservoir performance when consideration is given to the recoverable hydrocarbon liquid from the production of solution gas that has been or will be liberated in a reservoir. The Lambert well is located in C, SW 1/4, SW 1/4, Set- 18, T-l0-N, R-20-W, Washita County, Okla. At the time of completion it was on the east edge of the development and Was producing from conglomerate through 30 perforations in the 5 1/2-in. casing at a depth of 9,859 to 9,864 ft. The well Was completed on July 9, 1949, and subsurface oil samples were obtained July 29 and August 1, 1949. Production gas/oil ratio data were obtained during the operation in series of two Separators at high and low-pressures of 314 and 44 psia, respectively, and at an average temperature of approximately 60°F. The flowing bottom-hole pressure at the time of sampling was 3,934 psis. The static bottom-hole pressure was not obtained at the time of sampling, as the well could not be shut in long enough for testing because gas produced from the well was used for fuel at an offset drilling well. However, the initial reservoir pressure was calculated to be 4,364 psia from knowledge of pressure gradients in other wells in the field and the depth of the casing perforations in the Lambert NO. 1 well.

IN 1923, Oklahoma took second place as an oil-producing state; whereas in 1922 it was the leader. California surpassed it, in 1923, by nearly 100,000,000 bbl. In 1923, Oklahoma produced, according to statistics of The Oil & Gas Journal, 165,013,685 bbl., or an increase of approximately 10 per cent. over the preceding year; the increase in California was approximately 90 per cent. The number of wells drilled in Oklahoma and the results of the two years are contrasted in the following table from data published in a preliminary bulletin by the U. S. It has been 32 years since oil development began in the state, last year being the largest in the amount of production. The production of the past year would have been considerably greater were it not for the shutdown order in the Burbank field and curtailment of production in the Hewitt and Tonkawa pools.

THE material available for mineralogic study, consisted of drill cores, 2 to 3 in. thick, supplemented by small well cuttings. Such study has added no essential new information regarding the minerals, though the refractive indices, used for determinative purposes, have been determined more accurately than before, permitting the development of a scheme for the rapid identification of these minerals. The essential points brought out by the investigation are two: (1) that certain mineral associations evidently point the way to an understanding of the geologic history and (2) that a definite sequence of mineral formation has taken place so that the original minerals formed have been in part-reacted on producing new compounds and associations; Twenty minerals have been found. THE WORK OF THE DRILLER and of the oil geologist is seriously handicapped by the impossibility of actually seeing what is going on inside a borehole as it is being drilled. Visual information of the position and condition of the casing, and of the characters and attitudes of strata passed through would be of inestimable benefit. The best substitute for putting a periscope down a hole is the taking of photographs of its interior at points where information is desired. An apparatus for this purpose has been constructed by Dr. Thomas Reinhold, of Heemstede, Holland, and one instrument of his design has been put into practical use by the Geological Survey of The Netherlands in searching for water. To the best of our knowledge, this instrument has not been applied to oilfield problems, although the possibility has been mentioned in the one or two brief notices of the camera which have appeared in the literature.' The purpose of presenting this description of the instrument, with some examples of its work, is to suggest that it might be adapted to serve a variety of useful purposes in American oilfields, and with the hope that discussion will bring out any modifications necessary to make the apparatus more valuable to drillers and geologists.

FINLAND'S recent mining history is both dramatic and pitiful in its shifting fortunes, dominated as it has been, by the country's proximity to the border zone of opposing dictatorships and social traditions; Fascism to the south, Communism to the east, and Democracy to the west. After 108 years under Russia's more or less harsh rule, Finland gained its democratic independence during the 1917 revolutionary strife in Russia with the official help of Germany and spontaneous help of other neighbors. The young nation was attacked by Russia in 1939 and again in 1941. It is common knowledge how the Finns fought with everything they had and everything they could get against their overwhelming adversary, and how by force of circumstances they landed in the Axis camp in 1941. Finland has never been known as a mining country in the same way as near-by Sweden, whose abundant iron and copper smelters during long periods so greatly contributed to the nation's welfare. Its largely barren, Archaean-granite geology long seemed forbidding. Some mining was done, to be sure; copper and tin at Pitkaranta near the Russian border, and lead and copper at Orijarvi. But towards the end of the last century the absence of a single producing mine cast a pessimistic shadow of truth over the Finnish poet Runeberg's words, that

While running certain float-and-sink tests, unit coal calorific values were determined for gravity fractions of a series of Illinois coals from several districts in the southern part of the state. When these values were plotted against specific gravity what appear to be characteristic curves of somewhat different shape were obtained for each district represented. This in itself seems noteworthy. The shape of the curves seems to indicate that the lightest fraction of the coal, which inspection shows to be largely vitrain, suffers the least deterioration in storage. It was also observed that on dilution curves established with dry ash and B.t.u. values the fractions of 1.35, 1.40 and 1.50 sp. gr., which constitute the greater weight per cent of a given coal sample, fall more frequently on a straight dilution line than do the lighter or heavier fractions of the same sample. In most instances there is a marked steepening between the 1.35 and the fraction of lighter gravity. In general the curve increases in steepness between the fractions of 1.50 and 1.70 specific gravity. The variations in the unit coal-specific gravity curves as well as those observed in dilution curves which appear to be pertinent to this problem are: (I) variation in coal substance with change in specific gravity, (2) variation in kind and quantity of mineral matter with the specific gravity of the fraction, (3) factors of analytical procedure which tend to introduce error in analysis, particularly in high-ash and high-sulfur fractions.
