AN equipment manufacturer swallows a bitter pill when he sees his machinery improperly in- stalled and not used to the full potential. This frequently happens with vibrating screens. Screens can be classified according to the path of vibration imparted to the screen surface. On this basis there are: 1) vertical circle or modified circle throw, 2) horizontal circle or modified circle throw, 3) vertical linear reciprocation, 4) tilted linear reciprocation, and 5) horizontal linear reciprocation. The most versatile vibration for medium to coarse sizing is generally conceded to be the vertical circle produced by an eccentric or unbalanced shaft, but other types of vibration may be more suitable for certain screening operations, particularly in the finer sizes.

PETROLEUM and natural gas are composed principally of the saturated hydrocarbons ranging from methane, the lightest, to nonvolatile liquids and solids containing approximately thirty-five carbon atoms. A technique for locating buried accumulations of these hydrocarbons before drilling obviously requires that some of the hydrocarbons leave the deposit and migrate toward the surface of the earth where they may be detected in their original form. Earliest attempts to link near surface hydrocarbons to petroleum at depth were apparently made by Laubmeyer1 in Germany and by Sokolov2 in Russia. These investigators collected samples of soil air from boreholes one to two meters deep and analyzed them for traces of hydrocarbons. They found that soil air over producing areas is richer in these constituents than is soil air over barren areas.

The Naval Consulting Board is asking the aid of all the members of the Institute in its effort to help solve the submarine problem. Probably every member of the Institute has some suggestion, and while each one of these may be of only slight value in furnishing the remedy, the aggregate may be of great service. Every member of the Institute will soon receive a pamphlet known as Bulletin No. 1 of the Naval Consulting. Board of the United States in which full information and instructions will be given to all of those who are willing to assist. It is hoped when this information is received the members of the Institute will give it their prompt attention and write as soon as possible to the Secretary of the Naval Consulting Board, 13 Park Row, New York, N. Some measurements of the rate of loss of hydrogen from cylinders of iron and steel are analyzed in terrns of a trapping theory. The apeement is encozcraging and gives rise to estimates for the density of traps in the metal. Furthermore, the results appear to be consistent with the assumption that the diffusion constant D for the steady flux of hydrogen through iron lies on the extrapolation of the linear curve (log D us 1/T) obtained at higher temperatures. IT has been shown in a previous paper1 that the literature relating to hydrogen diffusion in steels contains sufficient evidence to invalidate the application of Fick's laws to hydrogen diffusion in steel at low temperatures. To account for the deviations from simple diffusion behavior a trapping theory was developed, and the fundamental laws modified accordingly. In the present paper, new data on the evolution of hydrogen from long cylinders are presented, and together with some published data are examined in terms of the requirements of the theory.' Properties of solutions of the basic equations derived previously1 and appropriate to the present experimental conditions are outlined in the first section as they determine the form in which the experimental data must be presented for a comparison of theory and experiment. Two new solutions not previously reported have been derived as described in the Appendix. The experiments and treatment of data are then given in Sections 2 and 3 and the results are discussed in Section 4. 1) THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The hydrogen-diffusion theory1 applied in this paper postulated that lattice-dissolved hydrogen at a concentration C diffuses randomly in accordance with Fick's first law, but that the lattice contains a uniform density N of traps which can capture and delay hydrogen atoms. kC atoms are trapped per second in a region containing unit concentration of vacant traps while p are released per second in a region containing unit concentration of occupied traps. On this basis it was shown (Eq. [30] of Ref. 1) that, when local changes in the lattice-dissolved concentration C are slow enough for equilibrium to be established with the traps, the system is represented in dimensionless form by the equation:

ALTHOUGH the Andean mountain belt, which contains almost all the metal deposits of the other South American nations, does not enter Brazil, this country is rich in mineral resources, for in area it accounts for half the continent and geologically it contains almost all of the Brazilian Shield. This great mass of ancient rocks has been relatively stable for a long time and forms a great area of plateaus and highlands interrupted only by the syncline which carries the Amazon River across it to the sea. Lowland Brazil - the great flood plains of the Amazon. Tocantins, Paraguay, and Parana Rivers-is of no interest to the miner, and in fact supports but a small proportion of the country's population. The highland area is divided into unequal parts by the Amazon River; the north half is underlain by the north lobe of the Brazilian Shield which extends into Venezuela as far as the Orinoco, and into the Guianas, and is known as the Guiana Highlands. Mineralization appears to have been weak in the Brazilian portion of these hills. In fact most of the ore deposits are to be found in the States of Minas Gerais and Bahia, although the neighboring states of Sao Paulo, Pernambuco, and Piauhy can also boast of some deposits. Goias and Matto Grosso are as yet incompletely prospected but are considered to contain reserves for the future.

A ceramic product or processed material is a solid composed of materials which have been subjected to heat above 875°F. The raw materials, which are blended together (or in some cases used singly), are selected and utilized for various reasons such as ease of fabrication, aid to processing, to yield desired properties after processing, lack or controllable degree of toxicity or hazard, availability, cost, and perhaps other considerations. Almost all solid inorganic, some organic, and some liquid and gaseous materials have the potential to be used individually in some ceramic product. There are several fundamental functions to be fulfilled in every ceramic product and a number of secondary functions are desirable in specified products. These functions are generally met by the most widely occurring minerals and rocks of the earth and their debris. This fact characterizes ceramics as a field utilizing the raw materials most available to man. Of course, specified products utilize synthetics, organics, and rare inorganics to produce desired results. Any solid nonmetallic product processed by subjection to temperature above a red heat may be called a ceramic product. Widely used construction materials and units, domestic utensils and units, industrial parts to facilitate manufacture, technical components, and aesthetic creations are very often of a ceramic nature because of the durability, inertness, hardness, ease of fabrication, cost, and availability of the ingredients. Often, organics or metals cannot meet desired specifications for some of these products. The rocks and minerals and mineral debris of the earth are largely siliceous. Oxygen and silicon comprise roughly 75% of the earth's crust with aluminum, iron, calcium, and the alkalies following in abundance. Silica ( SiO, ) and silicates can be melted to form glasses. Alumina (A1,0,), present in a mineral com- pound, gives greater durability, hardness, and strength, but lessens the glass-forming property. Iron, calcium, and the other alkalies flux silica and reduce melting points. Thus, sand, which is generally almost pure SiO,, and clay, which is generally hydrated alumina silicate, are the most widely used of all ceramic raw materials-principally because of the glass-forming propensities of silicates. In ceramic formulations, clay is generally a refractory filler or skeletal material, having in the raw state a plasticity derived from its colloidal grain size and its water-loving nature. On the other hand, silica sand is a glass former or nonplastic filler. Clay and silica sand in pure forms are quite refractory, i.e., not easily melted. Clay, although siliceous, is less of a glass former than pure silica and is more refractory. Natural contaminants, such as iron oxide or limestone, adulterate many clays and some sands. These contaminants act as fluxes and reduce the fusion points of the mineral or blends. Glass is made from silica sand by fluxing the sand with strong bases, usually soda ash and limestone. Red building bricks are hard and durable because the sand and clay have been partially fused with help of natural iron oxide serving as a flux. The iron oxide per- forms a dual function, serving as a pigment as well as a flux. In a blend of clay and sand and iron oxide, the sand is more susceptible to fusion than is the clay. Although silica sand and clay are the most widely used raw materials in most ceramic products, many other minerals, and some non- minerals are utilized in products where these materials can produce or aid in achieving desired results. THE St. Joseph Lead Co. became interested in the Tri-State district in 1921 through acquisition of prospecting and development rights on approximately 20,000 acres of land extending northeastward from the Picher mining field, mostly in Kansas. Prospecting with churn drills was begun the same year and the first commercial ore body was found on the Jarrett tract at the then northern limit of the main Picher field. Operations at this mine began in 1923. Kansas Explorations, Inc., was organized in 1923 by the St. Joseph Lead Co. as a wholly-owned subsidiary to carry on its operations in the Tri-State District from an office at Joplin, Mo. As prospecting of the original acreage proved largely negative, attention was subsequently turned to other sections of the district. Numerous additional leases were acquired and prospected. The Company was successful in developing into operating properties the Jarrett, Isherwood, Robinson, Sullivan and Lotson tracts and, in more recent years, the Ritz, Snapp, Buckingham, Gibson and Jasper mines.

Molten silver is equilibrated with silicon nitride at 1400°C in nitrogen + hydrogen gas mixtures, and from the solubility data the activity coefficient of silicon is found to be 1.76 at silicon concentrations below 1 pct. Using this value, and that available from the silicon cmbide solubility measurements, together with those derived from the phase equilibrium diagvam, the activities of silver and silicon are estimated for the entire composition range. The main feature of the activity data is that there is a pronounced positive deviation from ideality. The activity of silver in molten silver containing up to 5 pct Si was determined by Schadel, Derge, and Birchenall1 by measuring the vapor pressure of pure silver and of the alloy over a temperature range of 850º to 1050°C. They deduced from their results that there is a positive deviation from Raoult's law and that the activity coefficient of silver increases with decreasing temperature. However, as pointed out by Kubaschewski and Catterall,2 their activity coefficients are much too high, giving silver activities greater than unity. At a later date McCabe and Birchenal13 showed that the previous vapor pressure data on silver4 were high by a factor of about 1.3; presumably a similar error must have occurred with the vapor pressure measurements on the Ag-Si alloys. The activities of silicon and silver calculated by tager' from the phase diagram and by Gibbs-Duhem integration, respectively, show a positive deviation from Raoult's law for silicon activity and positive and negative deviations for the silver activity. According to these computations, at infinite dilution of silicon ygi = 1.12 at 1420°C. d'Entremont and chipman6 measured the solubility of silicon carbide in molten silver at unit carbon activity; the equilibrium silicon content is found to be Nsi = 0.017 ± 0.002 atom fraction for 1420°C. Using the data of Grieveson and Alcock7 for the free energy of formation of silicon carbide from pure silicon and graphite, the activity of silicon for unit activity of carbon and of silicon carbide is asi = 0.0308 at 1420°c; therefore for the above solubility data on silver, YSi = 1.81, which is somewhat higher than that given by Hager. Use is often made of silver alloys in the measurements of activities of solutes in metals where silver has a very low solubility; in fact, Ag-Si and Ag-A1 alloys have been used in the past for such purposes. In an attempt to gain more thermodynamic data on molten Ag-Si alloys, measurements have been made in the present study on the solubility of silicon nitride in molten silver; the results on these solubilities are given in this paper together with a detailed discussion of activities of silver and silicon. SOLUBILITY OF SILICON NITRIDE The standard free energy of formation of silicon nitride is known with a reasonably high degree of accuracy. According to the measurements made by Hincke and Brantle8 and by Pehlke and Elliott,' the following are the free energy data for the standard states of solid Si3N4, liquid silicon, and Nz at 1 atm pressure:

And no preacher was ever more serious than I am. You petroleum engineers recognize that the producing branch of the industry is passing through an era of plenty and inflated potentials into an era of scarcity and unmet allowables. Not too long ago the oil operators of Kansas, California, and Texas were appearing before operators' meetings and regulatory authorities asserting that these States were capable of producing at rates far in excess of what the demand at that time would absorb. Today every oil-producing area in the United States except the Texas Gulf Coast and West Texas is producing close to or in excess of its maximum efficient rate.

THERE is little quantitative information available concerning the effect of applied stress, in both the elastic and plastic ranges, on diffusion kinetics. Accordingly, a program has been undertaken to determine the rate of self-diffusion in high purity iron, with the specimens subjected to stress during the course of diffusion. Results are reported here for body-centered cubic iron at a diffusion temperature of 890°C. The iron used was 99.97 pct Fe, the principal impurities being 0.002 pct C, 0.008 pct 0, and 0.02 pct Si. The surface-decrease method of self-diffusion analysis was employed, and Fe55 Mn x-radiation, 2.9 years half-life) was the tracer element. Details of specimen preparation and equipment are given elsewhere.' Disks of the high purity iron, % in. diam x 1/4 in. thick, were annealed at 890°C for 18 hr in dry hydrogen to produce large grains of a ferrite. The faces of the disks were then surface ground, and possible grinding stresses were relieved by annealing at 890 °C for 45 min in vacuum. A layer of radioactive iron 0.00186 cm thick was electroplated on one face of each disk. The self-diffusion coefficient was calculated from the ratio of the radiation intensities emanating from each of these faces, as measured before and after diffusion.' The heating was carried out in a vacuum furnace (10-5 mm Hg) controlled to ±1.5°C. The specimens were loaded in compression between two quartz disks during the diffusion runs by means of a lever system operating through a vacuum seal. Thus one quartz disk was pressed directly against the radioactive face of the specimen, minimizing the vapor loss of radioactive iron. Steady-state creep occurred in all instances where permanent deformation could be detected, but the specimens did not exhibit appreciable transverse barreling until natural strains of 0.2 to 0.3 were attained. Essentially, the diffusion took place under uniaxial stress. UPWARDS of 200,000 engineers in this country are sufficiently interested in engineering as a profession to have joined a society, but not over 10% of them belong to any one society. There is a widely-felt need of an over-all organization of all the societies to act as spokesman for all engineers on matters of common concern. On a local basis, over 100,000 engineers in 35 metropolitan areas have organized themselves into local councils, and are doing an effective job of intersocietal co-operation within their sphere of activity. In the last few years much has been said and written about a similar organization on a national scale. Everybody wants iteverybody is talking about it-it's in the air-it's coming-it's inevitable. Although it is no longer necessary to talk about why or whether there should be such an organization, there is no such unanimity about what it should be like. This paper outlines a proposed organization by answering four questions-who, how, what, and who will pay for it.

The atomic ratios of oxygen to iron in zlarious corn-posilions of wustite in the vicinity oj the reported p to n transformation were determined in the temperalure range between 950" and 1250°C. For these conditions, equilibrium vacancy concenrations have also been determined at vatious mixtures of C0,-CO. The data show a continuos introduction of iron vacancies as oxygen is introduced into wuistite. No phase change is observed with in the wuustite field. However, the value of n in the isothermal oxygen pressure dependence, the weight change shifts to 1ower values as the concentration of oxygen increases. WUSTITE is a metal deficit semiconductor with the majority lattice disorder being cation vacancies. Using the notation similar to that of Kroger and ink,' the dissolution of oxygen into wiistite using C02-CO mixtures is represented by, WHere v+! denotes a cation vacancy with k effective negative charges and kh • denotes k electron holes, h -. Applying the law of mass action and assuming a dilute solution of defects in the wiistite yields Where the square brackets denote concentrations. Furthermore, when k = 2 the cation vacancies are completely ionized, and both the concentration of cation vacancies and the concentration of electron holes are proportional to the third root of the ratio, PC /PCo. This analysis is valid for one particular mael based on an ideal solution at elevated temperatures (in this case t > 1000°C). At lower temperatures, it has been shown2 that the pressure dependence of the electronic conductivity changes in a manner which suggests that vacancies interact with or "trap" electron holes. At the very high concentrations of defects, 10'' to 10" per cu cm, these simple models no longer hold. Recently Tannhauser,3 Geiger et a1.' Bransky and Tannhauser; and Hillegas' have found an apparent p to n transformation in wiistite in the temperature range of 950" to 1300°C. This junction was found by thermoelectric and electronic conductivity measurements. Geiger eta1.' found that the electronic conductivity became almost independent of the oxygen pressure at high temperatures and oxygen concentrations within the experimental error. In addition, Vallet, Raccah, and coworkers6'7 have reported the existence of several "varieties" of wiistite which were reported to exist within what was heretofor presumed to be a

On the basis of microscopic studies, melting-point observations, and X-ray analyses, a phase diagram is proposed for the Cb-V system. A complete series of solid solutions is formed with a minimum in the solidus at 1810°C near 35 wt pct Cb. No compounds or intermediate phases were found in the system above 650°C. THERE is an ever increasing need for better structural metals and alloys for use in nuclear reactors. In addition to the normal properties of engineering structural materials, such as high temperature strength, resistance to corrosion, and fabric-abil~ty, the nuclear properties of the material must be considered. In a nuclear reactor it is important to conserve neutrons, so a material which removes these neutrons from the reaction excessively is considered to have unfavorable nuclear properties. In nuclear-reactor design the engineer must have nuclear as well as other data available on alloys in order to make a wise selection of materials. Due to the fact that many of the common structural materials have undesirable nuclear properties, it is vital that new alloys of metals having more favorable nuclear properties be investigated. Columbium and vanadium are both high melting metals, both exhibit resistance to chemical attack, and no great difficulty is encountered in fabricating them into desired shapes. With proper treatment both metals can be cold rolled extensively without failure. In addition they have desirable nuclear properties for certain types of reactors. Therefore, the alloys of columbium and vanadium should be of interest in the atomic energy program. Since an alloy-development program is enhanced by a knowledge of the phase equilibria of the components, this investigation was undertaken to establish the phase diagram for the Cb-V system. According to the Hume-Rothery rules for alloying,' the chemical similarity, crystal structure, and atomic-size factor are favorable for a complete series of solid solutions for this system. Both elements are in the same family of group V of the periodic table and thus are quite similar chemically. The crystal structures of columbium and vanadium are compatible for extensive solid solubility, since both have body-centered-cubic structures. The atomic diameters of columbium and vanadium are 2.85 and 2.62Å, respectively. This difference of slightly more than 8 pct is well within the 15 pct maximum difference allowed for extensive solid solubility. Experimental Procedures Source of Materials: Columbium powder and sheet trimmings were obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. According to the manufacturer the metal contains less than 1 pct impurity. An analysis of the metal showed approximately 1800 ppm C in the powder while the sheet trimmings contained less than 500 ppm C. Spectrographic analysis showed minor amounts of Ca, Cr, Fe, Mn, Si, Ti, V, and Zr in both forms of the columbium. No commercial source of vanadium having the ductility and purity desired was available to the authors at the beginning of this investigation. As a result, all of the vanadium used in this study was prepared by the bomb reduction of vanadium pen-toxide with calcium employing the method reported by Long.' Yields of massive vanadium normally were about 80 pct. Chemical analysis of the vanadium prepared in this manner showed the presence of 200 to 500 ppm N and 800 to 1000 ppm C. Minor amounts of Ca, Fe, Mn, Si, Zr, Cr, and Cb were detected by spectrographic analysis. This vanadium metal was ductile and was cold rolled into 5 mil sheet. Annealing was not necessary during this rolling and the metal retained its cold-rolling characteristic after are-melting. Preparation of Alloys: The Cb-V alloys were prepared by melting pieces of vanadium sheet togethel-with columbium in the form of sheet or pellets of powder. The melting was carried out under argon in conventional arc-melting equipment employing a tungsten electrode and a water-cooled copper crucible. Each alloy was remelted three or four times, inverting the alloy after each melting in order to assure complete mixing. Alloys normally were obtained as round flat disks, weighed approximately 70 grams, and had roughly the shape of a disk 1 1/2 in. in diameter and 1/4 in. thick. Half of each alloy

The chemical reaction occurring in collection of nonmetallic minerals with amine-type collectors was early postulated by students of flotation phenomena to be metathesis between the mineral and the collector, involving exchange between the amine-bearing (aminium) ion and the cation of the mineral, and formation at the mineral surface of an oriented film of the amine salt of the mineral anion. Qualitative evidence of exchange has been obtained on several occasions at Columbia. Thus 1000 C.C. of a solution containing 495 mg of laurylamine hydrochloride was shaken 17 min. with 100 grams of barite and ground in a porcelain mill to pass a 200-mesh screen; the mixture was then set aside for 48 hr. Filtrate therefrom analyzed 476 mg. per liter of laurylamine hydrochloride. There was no substantial loss of chloride ion (78.4 mg. per liter in the original; 74 in the filtrate). No successful analyses were concluded for barium ion. Earlier, confessedly rough work with scheelite indicated a solution gain in Ca++ equivalent to about one-half the aminium ion lost. Real quantitative roof of the exchange, in the form of an established stoichiometric balance, is unknown to the authors. The data of the present paper, however, obtained from experiments designed on the basis of the exchange hypothesis, constitute strong evidence of its truth, and at the same time point the way to economic utilization of the expensive nitrogen-bearing collectors in concentration of the low-priced nonmetallic minerals. The basic postulate underlying the experiments performed was that, if the collecting reaction is of the type R+ + Y- + MX = RX + M+ + Y- where R = aminium ion, Y = the anion of the amine salt, and M and X are, respectively, the cation and anion of the mineral, the reaction should obey qualitatively the implications of the mass-action and solubility-product laws. This is to say that coating and collection should be aided by the addition to the solution of either ion (R+ or X-) of the collector-coating compound, and hindered by the addition of either of the ions M+ or y-. Experimental work comprised determination of (,) the relative solubilities of the laurylammonium salts of a variety of nonmetallic-mineral anions; and (21 the contact angles' of various minerals in solutions containing different concentrations of the postulated controlling ions. Dendvite morphology of unidirectionally solidified Sn-12 pct Bi alloy was determined with the aid of X-ray and macroetch techniques. Columnar growth direction (growth direction of primary arms) in this alloy is [110]; secondary arms grow in the [lii], [111), and [112] directions. Interstices between [112] dendrite arms fill in during early stages of solidification so that well-defined (110) planes are seen in the final structure (parallel to the heat-flozo direction). Similarly, interslices betweex the [111] secondary arrlls fill in to form (112) planes, and interstices between [1111 ] arms fill in to form (112) planes. DENDRITE morphology in alloys is conveniently studied in unidirectionally solidified castings. In this type of solidification, heat is extracted from a single chill surface of the casting while other surfaces are insulated. Solidification progresses from the chill and results in cast grains that are columnar with the long axis of the grain perpendicular to the chill. Dendrite morphology is conveniently studied by examination of etched surfaces parallel and perpendicular to the chill, as previously described.'" Experimental studies on the growth direction for tin are in general agreement. The major growth direction is [110]:-' although this is altered somewhat by supercooling. In one study, tin dendrites pulled from a supercooled melt had a growth orientation 12 deg away from the [110] direction toward the [002] direction.' This orientation could be changed back to the [110] or close to the [110] direction by changing the tempera- ture gradient in the melt. In a study using autoradio-graphic techniques, (111) directions were shown to be directions of preferred growth in addition to the [110) direction.7 PROCEDURE The samples employed in this study were cut from 12 pct Bi-88 pct Sn castings, 1.5 in. in diam and 3.5 in. tall. The casting procedure consisted of heating the charge to 390°C and then pouring the molten alloy directly into a gypsum sleeve mounted on a massive copper chill. Specimens were cut from the ingot, mounted, polished, and etched with Taffs reagent [FeC13 .6H2O, 2 g; HC1, 5 cu cm;H20, 30 cu cm; CzHaOH (95 pct), 60 cu cm].' The dendritic pattern was clearly visible after etching. Photomicrographs at about 8 and 35 times were taken on surfaces parallel and perpendicular to the chill. Laue back-reflection patterns were obtained from three different columnar grains in a singIe polished face 2 in. from the chill. The cut face was polished and positioned in the beam of a Laue camera, so that diffraction occurred from a single dendritic grain. The resulting diffraction pattern was interpreted to determine crystal log raphic orientation in relation to the heat-flow direction and in relation to microstruc-ture of the given grain. RESULTS Fig. 1 shows a horizontal and vertical section of the columnar structure, at low magnification. Light regions are rich in tin, and darker regions tin-poor; the primary phase is tin-rich a phase. The two sections shown were taken orthogonally from the same metallographic specimen.
