The mining districts of the first order' of the western United States (and borders) are those named on Fig. 1. These fall into four groups: (1) in the eastern outliers of the Rocky Mountain system; (2) in the Rocky Mountain system itself; (3) in the Great Basin; and (4) in the Sierras and Coast ranges. Of these four groups, the first three are almost entirely of Tertiary age and are within a belt of compressive folding which we shall call the Rocky Mountain-Great Basin thrust arc. The backbone of this belt is shown by the line BAC. The position of the ore districts in this belt indicates a conformance to linear elements of the continental pattern. These are additional to the peripheral elements emphasized by Butler.2 Nature of the Thrust Arc The thrust arc separates regions of contrasted kinds. To the east of it are flat-lying plateaus interrupted by earlier mountain folds; to the west, sunken basins, in which block-faulted ranges lie like an anchored fleet in a sea of desert wash or lava. The. cross-sections are as shown in Fig. 2. The backbone of the belt is the upward and eastward moving block represented by the Glacier Park, the Wasatch, and the Virgin mountains, successively. The structure represented on these sections is the culmination of events which began far back in geologic time and throughout which a contrast has existed between the regions east and west of the backbone line. COAL occupied a large place in the technical sessions of the Institute at its annual meeting for in addition to three sessions specifically de- voted to coal the two sessions on mine ventilation and the two on ground movement and subsidence, which are reported under their own headings, were primarily concerned with coal. The first session on coal was a joint one with the Iron and Steel Division, on Wednesday afternoon, with F. H. Crockard and J. R. Campbell presiding as joint chairmen and the latter actually officiating. The principal topic of discussion was G. S. Scott's paper "Evaluation of Coal for the Making of Blast- Furnace Coke," which has been published as T. P. 159. The author made a brief statement of its con- tents to start the discussion and the chairman, after briefly reviewing it himself, called on C. A. Meissner to start the discussion. He briefly reviewed the economic factors in the use of coal for coke-making, saying that not only .does the removal of 1 per cent of ash from the coal reduce the cost of pig iron 12 or 13c. per ton, but it also permits coke of satisfactory structures to be made from a coal which otherwise could not be used. He stressed the importance of uniformity in blast-furnace fuel and discussed the benefit of mixing different coals as raw material for the coke oven and cited experience with Illinois coals.

THOUGH the fall meeting of the Coal Division was held in the heart of the anthracite section, at Hazleton, Pa., the bituminous industry was well represented also, and the two groups found much common ground for discussion. The' technical part of the program was confined to two sessions in the morning and afternoon of the first day, Friday, Oct. 14, the evening and the following day being reserved for field trips and social functions. The attendance more than met the expectations of those in charge of the arrangements; there seemed no hint of depression here.

THE relation between gases and metals has been a subject of increasingly active investigation during the past years, principally devoted to the study of metal-hydrogen systems. It has been found that hydrogen is soluble in most molten metals to an appreciable extent and somewhat soluble in most solid metals.1,2 In every known case there is a sudden decrease in solubility at the melting point. Thus a freezing mass of metal containing hydrogen in excess of the solid solubility must in some way expel that excess during the freezing process. This leads to internal blowholes, and such effects as pinhole porosity. Gas trapped in metal that is to be fabricated by a working process such as extrusion or rolling may be the cause of blisters. For some cases, notably in copper and iron alloys, the presence of hydrogen can lead to extreme embrittlement of the metal. The aluminum-casting industry has long recognized the importance of hydrogen in its techniques. Excess gas in molten aluminum alloys often leads to the formation of "pinhole porosity" in the solid casting.3 To prevent this hydrogen pickup it is necessary to avoid overheating the melt and to protect it from such sources of hydrogen as water. In spite of all precautions, it is sometimes necessary to extract hydrogen from the melt just before pouring by bubbling with a gas such as chlorine or nitrogen. Recently it has been found that somewhat similar effects are possible with magnesium alloys, in that the presence of hydrogen can induce or aggravate microporosity.4-6 This paper is primarily concerned with a presentation of some facts concerning the solubility of hydrogen in magnesium and its alloys, with some discussion of the significance of these facts in a practical sense. In any study of gas-metal systems it is important to bear in mind a clear distinction between adsorption on surfaces and absorption within the lattice.1 Considerable attention has been directed toward determining whether hydrogen is truly soluble in any solid metal, or whether the gas extracted from a sample was present at surfaces (external and internal) only.7 Most present day evidence supports the idea of true solution in addition to adsorption. A second important factor when dealing with gas solubility is the dependence of such solubility on external pressure. For diatomic gases such as H2, solubility in both liquid and solid metals apparently is proportional to the square root of the pressure, indicating a breakdown to a monatomic gas before diffusion into the lattice .2 For true equilibrium values of solubility, therefore, the pressure at the metal surface must be constant and, preferably, known. During 1975, the Reclasource Corp. constructed and started up a plant for the recovery of mill scale, coke breeze, blast furnace dust; blast furnace sludge; and TOC dust, at the site of Crucible Steel, Inc., Midland, Pa. The Reclaform Process was employed as the criteria for plant design. This process takes the solid wastes (as listed above) which are commonly found in integrated steel mills, sizes them, forms them through the use of a carbonaceous binder briquetting system, and fixes the binder through a final heat treating step. Blast furnace tests have been performed on 15,000 tons of Reclaform briquets. This paper gives a brief history of the program, and describes the process and the raw materials involved. The blast furnace campaign and its major conclusions are discussed.

Zinc metal production in the operating plants in the United States during 1948 was approximately equal to that of the year 1947, although new developments during the year assure higher output in 1949, if economic conditions are favorable. In the Western plants, the man-power shortage was almost completely overcome and new capacity has been or is in the process of being added to three plants; thus by December of 1948 daily zinc metal production had risen to the highest point since May of 1944 despite strikes in one large primary smelter and in one secondary plant.

GEOCHEMICAL prospecting extends the age-old method of searching out lodes with a gold pan and rationalizes the prospector's hunch that certain plants are associated with ore. It uses sensitive but cheap and rapid analytical methods to find the diagnostic chemical variations related to hidden mineral deposits. Exploration geologists can gain tremendous assistance from this new tool, although its optimum use is not simple. To bring out the geochemical pattern that reveals the presence of a hidden ore deposit with a minimum number of samples requires a combination of shrewdness, chemical knowledge, and exploration geology. The use of sensitive analytical methods for prospecting had its start in the 1930's in northern Europe, where Scandinavian and Russian geologists had some success in these early efforts. Very little geochemical prospecting was carried on in the United States at this time, and no sustained interest was manifest until the close of World War 11, when geochemical investigations were started by the Mineral Deposits Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey. The purpose of these investigations was to apply geochemical principles and techniques to surface exploration for mineral deposits. Both the research on analytical methods and the routine trace analyses for field investigations were at first conducted by a single group, but it later became apparent that the trace analyses could be done by men of less experience than that required for successful research on methods. For the past several years there have been two groups of chemists, and although their functions overlap, three of the chemists are chiefly concerned with research, while four to six other men make the trace analyses for field projects. The chemical investigations, as well as the field projects of the Geochemical Exploration Section, concern only those phases of the subject that are appropriate to a government organization; every effort is made to help private industry, but not to compete with it, in finding orebodies. The chief aim of the Section, therefore, is to develop new analytical techniques and publish the results promptly, to carry out field investigations of the fundamental principles of geochemical dispersion, and to field test promising- techniques under controlled conditions. Some routine geochemical exploration work is carried on in connection with DMEA loans, and in district studies where the project chief wishes geochemical information on certain areas for his report. It should be emphasized, however, that geologists of the Geochemical Exploration Section are primarily concerned with fundamental principles underlying the distribution, migration, and concentration of elements in the earth's crust. To facilitate the use of geochemical methods the USGS has published much information on its methods of analysis and has provided opportunities from time to time for qualified professional personnel to study these methods, to work in the USGS laboratory, or to attend demonstrations of the analytical techniques at the Denver Federal Center. Typical of the research carried on are the problems now being investigated: 1) Development of rapid and sensitive analytical methods suitable to the determination of traces of metals and other minor elements in various materials, such as rock, soils, plants, and water. At the present time attention is being concentrated on U, Bi, Cr, and Hg, and satisfactory rapid trace analytical methods are virtually perfected for U and Bi. Good methods are also available for: Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, Co, As, Sb, W, Mo, Ag, Nb, Ge, V, Ti, Fe, Mn, S, and P. 2) The relation of geochemical anomalies in plant materials to the geochemical distribution of elements in soils surrounding the plant. 3) A study of the dispersion halos in transported sedimentary cover such as glacial drift and alluvium over known orebodies. 4) A study of the behavior of ore metals in the weathering cycle. 5) A study of the behavior of the ore metals during magmatic differentiation. This requires a study of the distribution of minor metals in fresh igneous rocks and their component minerals in a well established differentiation series and in adjacent country rock. 6) A study of the dispersion of metals in primary halos in the wall rock surrounding orebodies. 7) Regional and local studies of the metal content of surface and groundwater in mineralized and barren areas. Many field projects of the Mineral Deposits Branch also require the services of USGS chemists during their investigation of the geochemical environment of ore deposits. From the work that has been done certain general principles have emerged. Concentrations of an element that are above the general or background value of barren material are called positive geochemical anomalies or simply an anomaly, whereas values less than background are called negative anomalies. The anomalies most commonly investigated in geochemical prospecting are those formed at the earth's surface by agents of weathering, erosion, or surficial transportation, but more and more attention is being given to primary anomalies found

Material balance relationships for expansion-type reservoirs above the bubble point have been discussed in recent years by H. N. Hall and M. F. Hawkins, Jr. The former drew attention to the effects of rock compressibility, and the latter to the effects of the compressibility of any interstitial water. Hawkins derived a general relationship which took note of oil, water and rock compressibilities, and then by assuming first, the absence of interstitial water and secondly, no effects due to interstitial water or rock compressibility, obtained relationships symbolically of the same form as those previously derived directly by Hall. Hawkins defined his terms clearly, and noted an approximation, due to the omission of a term involving the product of two compressibilities, made in reaching his final equation. There is, however, possible ambiguity with regard to Hall's written definition of the oil production term. One interpretation would mean that the produced oil and initial oil-in-place, if both required as stock tank barrels, would be obtained by using different formation volume factors in the conversion in order to satisfy the conditions implicit in Hall's formulae. The other would involve an approximation which, if used, was not stated. In both Hall's and Hawkins' studies the effect of the approximation or inconsistency is very slight. Nevertheless, it may be justifiable to give a somewhat more consistent derivation, since the complexity of the final relationships is not thereby greatly increased. Let the initial pore volume be Vi and the volume after a pressure drop of Ap, V. Then V = V, (1 - ?p . cr), where c, is the rock compressibility expressed as change in pore volume/unit pore volume/unit pressure change, and is defined with the initial pressure as base. Suppose that the interstitial water saturation under the initial conditions is Sw. The total volume of interstitial water under those conditions will be ViSw. If the volume of the water after dropping the pressure by ?p is V., this will be given by Vw = ViSw (1 + ?p.c,w), the compressibility of the water being c, which is ex- pressed using the volume at the initial pressure as base. If Boi is the reservoir volume factor of the crude oil for the initial reservoir conditions, and B. the equivalent factor when the pressure has dropped by ?p, with N the initial amount of oil expressed as stock tank barrels. N.Boi = Vi - V,Sw If n is the amount of oil produced (in terms of stock tank barrels) as a result of the pressure drop ?p, the remaining subsurface volume of oil at the lower pressure will be Bw, and Bc can be related to the compressibi:ity of oil and the pressure drop, and if c, is the compressibility factor based on the initial conditions, The relationship derived by Hawkins was case to a standard at the lower pressure, while a term (Ap) had been dropped, because of its smallness arising from its dependence on the products of two compressibility factors. It has previously been reported that metal loadings of up to 6.8 m. eq/g. of dry coal can be obtained by contacting brown coal or lignite with ammoniacal solutions of ammine forming metals. Application of equilibrium expressions to further experimental results indicates that the extraction is by ion exchange, that the exchange is divalent-univalent for Zn, Cd and Ni, but is mainly univalent-univalent for Cu, and that to obtain reasonably uniform values for the equilibrium constants correction formulae must be applied to compensate for multiple functionality of the coal and its pH dependence in ion exchange. The results are shown to be consistent with the hypothesis that metal ammine complex cations are exchanged for protons derived from carboxyl and/or phenolic hydroxyl groups in the coal.

THE nation's effort to win the war speedily is reflected in current trends in coal utilization, as in all other fields of our lives. In all industries, wherever coal is used for the production of heat and power the emphasis is on getting the most useful result with the least expenditure of matt.ria1. In addition to carrying its own share of the load, increased as it is by the demands of war industry, coal has had to fill in for the other fuels, mainly petroleum products, whose distribution from their more distant sources has been crippled by lack of shipping. Thus, the outstanding note in the utilization of coal this year is not the development of new methods of burning or handling coal but the extraordinary job that the industry has done in producing enough coal to serve all needs.

WHEN austenite first forms from aggregates of cementite and ferrite, it is not homogeneous.1 This inhomogeneity, consisting of both undissolved carbide and carbon concentration gradients, has a profound effect upon the characteristics of the austenite-pearlite reaction. The rate of formation of pearlite is increased by the presence of inhomogeneities2,3 and because of this (when the inhomogeneity is sufficiently pronounced) the hardenability of the steel is reduced,4,5 In addition to this kinetic effect, inhomogeneities will cause the direct formation of spheroidite from austenite at temperatures just below the Ae1.6-11 The present report attempts quantitatively to evaluate the effect of inhomogeneity upon the rate of the austenite-pearlite reaction, presents a method of determining the austenitizing cycle necessary to obtain "practical homogenization," and considers the effect of inhomogeneity on hardenability. EFFECT OF INHOMOGENEITIES ON REACTIONS NEAR Ae1 Few quantitative data are available representing the effect of undissolved carbide or of carbon concentration gradients upon the rate of the austenite-pearlite reaction. In procuring such data it is necessary to separate the effect of undissolved carbide from that of grain size, and this is not an easy task. The solution of carbide is always accompanied by an increase in the grain size, both effects contributing to the retardation of the reaction rate. It has been possible to make this separation and to obtain data that are independent of the grain size by the use of steels that differ only with respect to their tendency toward grain-coarsening. Steels C and D in Table I are such steels. These steels have been studied previously;1,2,12 they differ only with respect to deoxidation practice; C was deoxidized with silicon while D, teemed from a portion of the same heat, was deoxidized with additional quantities of aluminum in the mold. C therefore is what is normally termed a "coarse-grained steel" and D is a "fine-grained steel." These steels can be compared at the same grain size by heating C to a low temperature and heating D to an elevated temperature, producing a structure of austenite plus residual carbide in the former while forming homogeneous austenite in the latter; in such

WITH rapidly diminishing oil reserves: a great percentage of which are uneconomical at present prices, some of the existing methods of development and production will have to undergo radical re- visions to meet the changes continually taking place in the petroleum industry. Imagination in an engineer is a great asset. The fancy of today is found to be the realization of tomorrow, and with this thought in mind, there is here presented a more or less imaginative picture which, to my mind, has a meritorious basis. Directed drilling has reached a stage of accuracy sufficient to allow the prediction that this art will be used in the future development of oil structures, especially those \\,it11 thin sand bodies 'and steep dips. Directional drilling in a number of fields in California has gratifying results. Wells which practically laid pipe lines through the oil sands have enjoyed a greater drainage radius with a consequent greater initial and cumulative production. In one field where the vertical thickness of sands was approximately 550 ft., wells drifting at an angle as great as 55 deg. fro111 vertical had over 1100 ft. of perforated pipe in contact with these sands. Data obtained from development drilling provide the basic input for open pit mine planning and design. Development drilling is defined as delineation of the size, mineral content, and disposition of an ore body by drilling boreholes (Thrush, 1968). The objectives of development drilling are: ( 1 ) determining the geometry of the mineralization, ( 2 ) determining the grade and tonnage, , ( 3 ) obtaining samples for metallurgical testing, and ( 4 ) obtaining geotechnical data for mine design. To accomplish these objectives, an appropriate drilling plan must include the number of holes, the spacing and orientation of the holes, and a suitable data collection program. The data collection program covers sample collection, hole logging, and data presentation. This chapter will present some guidelines for development drilling and data collection techniques. The operational aspects of drilling will be covered in an- other chapter.

The thermodynamics of the cadmium-rich portion of the Pu-Cd system has been studied with a high-temperature galvanic-cell method. The partial phase diagram of the Pu-Cd system was determined. The existence of the intermediate phases PuCd11 (cubic BaHg11 structure, ao= 9.282) and PuCd6 (cubic, CeCd6 structure, a, = 15.59) was established. The existence of at least one other intermediate phase richer in plutonium was indicated. PuCd11 was found to peritectically decompose into PuCd6 and liquid at 406" * 2°C. The solubility of plutonium in liquid cadmium may be represented by the equations: (355' to 399°C) log (at. pct Pu) = 6.223 -4282T-1 (399° to 632°C) log (al. pct Pu) - 5.148 - 5277T-1 > 1.156 x 106 T-2 The free energy of formation values (kcal per mole) of the two intermetallic phases are given by the equations: (PuCd11), ?Gf= -45.9 + 35.7 x 10-3 T (PuCd6), ?Gf0- -39.27 + 25.86 X 10-3T The excess free energy (kcal per mole) of plutonium in liquid cadmium may be represented by the equation: -(-16.72 * 29.54 NPu) 10-3T in which Npu and Ned are the atom fractions of plutonium and cadmium. The thermodyanamics of the U- Cd and Pu-Cd systems are compared. THERMODYNAMIC information on systems of the actinide metals with low-melting metals, such as zinc and cadmium, is useful in the design of pyro-metallurgical processes for the purification of nuclear reactor fuels. The thermodynamics of the Pu-Zn,1 Th-Zn.2,3 U-Zn,4-5 and U-Cd6 systems have been reported. The present report on the Pu-Cd system concerns the liquidus composition in the cadmium-rich region, the characterization of the two most cadmium-rich intermetallic phases, and the thermodynamic properties of these intermetallic phases and dilute liquid solutions of plutonium in cadmium. EXPERIMENTAL Phase Studies. The liquidus composition was determined by analysis of filtered samples of the liquid phase withdrawn at a series of temperatures. The apparatus and procedure were identical to that used in the previous study of the Pu-Zn system.' Briefly. a sample of the melt was withdrawn into a tantalum tube fitted with a porous tantalum filter (30-µ pore). the entire sample dissolved in hydrochloric acid (to avoid errors due to segregation

The Field Meeting of the Chicago Section proved to be the most enjoyable meeting ever held by the Section. It took the form of a visit to the Northern Indiana Industrial District where the day was spent inspecting metallurgical plants in Indiana Harbor and East Chicago and in amusement at the Hammond Country Club. The weather was perfect and about 50 members and ladies attended the meeting. An inspection of the plant of the Inland Steel Co. occupied the morning. The plant was decorated in honor of the occasion and the company provided attractive souvenirs. It was noticed here that many of the ladies displayed an interest in the inspection and an understanding of the processes that would not have shamed professional metallurgists. While the members of the Section seemed to be most interested in the by-product coke ovens and the by-product recovery plant, the ladies enjoyed especially watching the snake-like antics of the red-hot rods in the wire mill. Leaving the steel plant, the Section enjoyed a ride through the district by automobile and arrived at the Hammond Country Club in time for lunch. In the afternoon some of the members inspected the plant of the International Lead Refining Co., at East Chicago, while the rest spent the time at the Country Club in golf, tennis, trap shooting, bridge and other amusements. During the dinner at the Hammond Country Club an informally organized male quartette led the singing in real college boy style. In the evening, E. E. Billow talked on the use of oil burners in metallurgical furnaces, Mr. MacDowell told of the present status of the Potash Industry and the Secretary told of some of the happenings at the Arizona Meeting. WILLIAM CHURCH was one of the founders and the first president of the Detroit Copper Mining Co. and was the first man to interest the Phelps Dodge company in the possibilities of the Morenci district, in the '70's. One rather interesting story concerning him is told by James Colquhoun, at one time president of the Arizona Copper Co., in his "History of the Clifton-Morenci Mining District." It seems that a geologist visited the Detroit company's mines and gave Alec McLean, then mine superintendent, quite a lesson on the proper mineralogical terms for what he saw in passing. Later, McLean handed out a few of them to Mr. Church as they walked through the mine on a tour of inspection. The latter had even less regard for a geologist than he did for sulphide ore, which meant little indeed, for in those days the rich ore was all oxidized, and there was no money in the sulphides. So Church was completely unimpressed by the geological and mineralogical terms that McLean had acquired from the visiting geologist. Church turned on him and warned him that so long as he was a member of his staff he was to understand that there were only two kinds of rock in his mines-the one was smelting ore and the other was waste rock, and he was not to forget it.

P = cost of suitable plant to treat y tons of ore daily, p = value of said plant when the mine has been exhausted. C = total fixed capital investment. W = working capital investment. Then let C + W = total capital investment. y = required yield of ore daily in tons. In the planning and erection of smelting-works, especially of such as contain the modern large water-jacketed blast-furnaces, we are often confronted with an insufficiency in the watersupply. It may be impossible to find in the immediate neighborhood of the selected site a sufficient supply to furnish the jackets with cold water. Or there may be enough water for this purpose, but it may be highly charged with scale-forming minerals held in solution. Or, the main water-supply, if pumped from the workings of a mine, may carry iron- or copper-salts, or even some free acid in solution, all of these substances being derivable from the oxidation of sulphuret-ores in the mine. Moreover, such mine-waters sometimes contaminate the waters of the creeks, so that these become unavailable, and we have to fall back on an inadequate supply of pure water furnished by some spring or springs, entirely too small in
