THE subject assigned me, "Safety in Mining," is a very broad one and only the high spots can be covered in this short paper. As this is a meeting of the Coal Division, these remarks will be directed largely to coal mine safety, although the principles of safety and effective accident prevention methods are relatively the same in every branch of mining or industrial work. The coal mining industry should take pride in the part it has played in the development of the accident prevention movement, and there is ample proof for the statement that the first real organized accident prevention, work, both abroad and in this country, was con- ducted in the coal mining industry.

Diphenyl guanidine is used as an accelerator in vulcanizing rubber. Other rubber accelerators are also flotation collectors, e.g., dithiocarbamate, thiazole, and the xanthates. Urea and its derivatives are good flotation collectors,1 and guanidine is the nitrogen analog of urea. These two characteristics suggested testing diphenyl guanidine as a flotation collector. Diphenyl guanidine has been tried in flotation work previously, but references give no details.2-4

The manufacture and treatment of metals comprises operations whose effectiveness depends in large measure upon diffusion phenomena. The significance of such phenomena has, for a few simple cases, long been understood, but in more complex cases it has not been adequately recognized. This paper presents a mathematical analysis of some of the cases in which diffusion leads to the formation of a new phase within the metal, and this analysis provides a basis for interpreting quantitatively many apparently diverse experimental observations recorded in the literature, some of which are outlined in the following pages. OBservt1ons Recorded in Literature An outstanding instance is the general type of phenomenon in which diffusion of an element into an alloy is followed by a phase change, which most frequently is a reaction (precipitation) of the diffusing element with one or more components of the alloy to form a compound. Thus in certain alloys heated in contact with oxygen not only the usual oxide scale appears but, in addition, beneath the surface, a well-defined zone in which free oxide particles are dispersed with notabIe uniformity. This zone, commonly referred to as the subscale or zone of internal oxidation, is remarkable in that the visible boundary between it and the unaltered metal is usually sharp. Such a subscale, which appears to have been recognized first in oxidized copper alloys, has been described and studied by C. S. Smith,l by Rhines,2 and by Rhines, Johnson and Anderson;3 but it appears also in other alloys when they are exposed to conditions that bring about the precipitation of some compound, not necessarily an oxide. Another clear case of this same kind is the diffusion of carbon into a steel containing an element such as molybdenum, chromium, vanadium or tungsten, whose carbide is less soluble in iron than iron carbide, the result being that some part of that element is precipitated as a dispersed carbide. A similar phenomenon may occur on the welding of two alloys each of which contains one of a pair of elements that react to form a compound or a new phase of any sort. But in addition to the precipitation of a compound formed from the diffusing element, other effects may result merely from the presence of the diffusing element. For instance, if homogeneous austenite, nearly saturated with respect to carbon, is heated in contact with silicon in the absence of oxygen, one would expect to find, behind the several iron-silicon phases analogous to a scale, a zone of austenite containing dispersed carbide, because of the fact that silicon decreases the solubility of carbon in iron. As still another example, oxidation of an alloy may result in diffusion toward the surface of one or more of the constituents; for instance, during oxidation of a steel containing an element such as "copper, which is less prone to oxidation than iron, there is a notable enrichment of copper just beneath the scale-metal interface. Creep of tantalum was measured at temperatures from 0.6 to 0.89 of the absolute melting temperature. The creep curves include first, second, and third stages. Steady-state creep rate depends on the fourth power of stress. The activation energy for creep throughout this temperature range is approximately 114 kcal per mole, measured by the aT technique. Subgrain formation occurs as a result of creep strain, and pile-up dislocation arrays are observed in etch-pit patterns. BECAUSE of its high melting point-which is exceeded only by those of rhenium and tungsten—and its high room-temperature ductility compared to most of the other high-melting-point metals, tantalum will undoubtedly be utilized in an increasing number of high-temperature applications. Alloying studies directed toward increased high-temperature strength must use data on tantalum itself as a base line in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the alloying additions. However, to date, no systematic study of creep of tantalum at temperatures above one-half of its melting point has been reported in the literature. Conway, Salyards, McCullough, and Flagella1 have measured linear creep rate of tantalum sheet as a function of stress, but at only one temperature, 2600°C. This paper describes a relatively thorough study of the high-temperature creep of tantalum. METHOD Material Tested. The commercially supplied, l/2-innch-diameter tantalum rod used for this work was electron-beam-melted, cold-forged, rolled, swaged, cleaned chemically, and vacuum-annealed for 1 hr at 1000°C, all by its manufacturer. The vendor's analysis included 60 to 170 ppm C, 3.4 to 4.2 ppm H, 60 to 80 ppm 0, 15 ppm N, and a hardness ranging from 66 to 81 Bhn and averaging 76 Bhn. Creep eimens Used. Two creep-tested specimens are shown in Fig. 1. The 1/4 in.-diameter gage section was 3/4 to 1 in. long, and terminated either at shoulders 5 mils high or at 20-mil-diameter tantalum wires spot-welded to the circumference of the gage section. Both kinds of shoulders served equally well as fiducial marks for optical strain measurements. The spot welding did not alter the creep behavior in any detectable way; the 5-mil- high sharp shoulders did not result in any detectable localized effect on the strain. Before testing, each tensile bar was first mechanically polished -id then electrochemically polished according to the method referred to by Forgeng2 as the "Thompson Ramo Woolridge" method, which was suitable for tantalum after small adjustments of technique were made. Two tensile bars tested at low stresses had 1/8-in.-diameter gage sections and utilized only the weight of the bottom grip for the applied load. Although these diameters were smaller than were desired for other reasons, applied loads were known with high precision in the tests in which they were used. Testing Procedure. Two different constant-load creep-testing machines were employed, one of which has been described by Smith, Olson, and Brown.3 In both, the tensile bar is held vertically on the axis of a cylindrical tungsten tube or screen heater by threaded tungsten grips. The tensile bars and associated grips are heated by radiation from the incandescent heaters, which are heated by their own electrical resistance. Both testing machines use pins to hold the bottom grips in place. The load is applied to a tensile bar through hanging weights, a constant force-multiplication lever, a pull rod sealed to the chamber lid, and a top grip threaded to the pull rod at one end and to the tensile bar at the other. In one machine, the vacuum seal is a bellows with a low spring constant; in the other, the seal involves a rotating "0 ring". With the latter, rotation is converted to translation with a crank shaft, so that elongation of the tensile bar is accommodated with no change of tensile load. The incandescent tensile bar is viewed by an external optical system through slots in the radiation shields and heater, and an enlarged image is projected on a ground-glass screen. Gage-length measurements are made on this image with cathetometers on traveling microscopes. With regard to creep-test results, the two machines were identical. Thorium oxide coatings were applied to the threaded ends of the tensile bars, to prevent diffusion welding of the tensile bars to the grips during testing. Specimen temperatures were measured with an L. & N. optical pyrometer which had been calibrated against a standard carbon arc, and were corrected fir window absorption by calculation from the measured spectral transmittance of the quartz observation windows. Longitudinal temperature gradients in the tensile-bar gage length and temperature drifts during testing were detectable but small, and were estimated to be 10°C or less. THE purpose of this paper is to present a method of designing safe and economical arch structures that are to be constructed of concrete or directly of original earth materials. The experimental data used to illustrate the design method are taken from Bucky and Fentress,1,2 and the application of the ideas presented by them is extended by obtaining an additional set of curves from which arch structures may be designed. This design method is based upon the following principles of similitude: A scalar model made of the same material as that of the full sized structure will behave similarly to its prototype if the density of the model is increased in the same proportion as its linear scale is decreased. Let R represent the scale or model ratio, namely, the ratio of a prototype linear dimension to the corresponding model linear dimension. The effect of increased density may be obtained by rotating the model in a centrifuge at a speed such that the centrifugal field exerts on the model an accelerative force R times the accelerative force of gravity. Under these conditions; (I) model unit stresses are equal to corresponding prototype unit stresses, (2) the ratio of the prototype deformation at a given point to the model deformation at a similar point is equal to the scale ratio, R, and (3) the model and the prototype will behave similarly within and beyond the elastic limits of strain. According to the above relations, such models can be used to solve the following problems: I. The dimensions of the most economical safe arch structure for a given load. 2. The maximum safe roof span underground for given geologic conditions. The procedure is described briefly as follows. Tests are made by rotating in a centrifuge a number of models that repIesent a variety of prototype loads and dimensions. From the experimental data, curves are plotted to show the relations between these loads and dimensions. The curves are used to solve directly the problems stated above. Structural design is based upon the working (safe) stress of the material of construction, which is established by applying a factor of safety to the experimentally determined ultimate strength of the material. In conformity with this principle, each model is gradually loaded until failure occurs. A safety factor is then applied to the results. If a safety factor of 4 is used, a given model at failure represents a safe prototype, the linear dimensions of which are equal to one-fourth the model ratio at failure times the corresponding model dimensions. THE cosmic ray continues to engage the attention of the physicists, and according to Millikan and Compton, experiments of the past summer indicate that these rays must come from interstellar space, but not from the stars themselves. According to press reports of the International Congress of Physicists at Rome, the view was given there that these rays have an initiating potential of over 750,000.000 volts. In the field of spectrographic investigation great strides have been made. The U. S. Naval Research Laboratories (R. F. Mehl and G. E. Doan of Lehigh) have just finished a year's work with a "radium torch" or "shadowgraphic apparatus" in the field of the X-ray, that bids fair to displace the latter to a great extent. The torch is more powerful., easier to operate and cheaper. Penetration of 10 in. of steel has been accomplished, which. is much -beyond the- -scope-, of the X-ray..

OUR mineral-land laws need revising so as to provide definite title at the outset to the mineral deposits within any definite piece of land. The laws as they now stand, especially those applicable to lodes, breed uncertainty as to rights of possession prior to patent; and to my mind this is the worst feature of all, worse even than the apex bugbear. It is now almost impossible for anybody to tell-with certainty what mineral rights exist within any area that is not covered by patent, or whether any valid rights exist at all. Our system is unique in permitting individuals to appropriate and exploit mineral lands of the public domain without notice of any kind to the Federal government, and to relinquish them without any ceremony at all. The result is a clouded record that cannot be cleared up until each claimant is put to some sort of final proof. In order to accomplish this, new Federal legislation will be required. The requirements for a mineral survey and the proceedings for patent have always been cumbersome and expensive; and perhaps out of regard for the poor claim owner, who can ill afford the outlay for that sort of thing, the law does not require him to go. through it unless he chooses to do so. Consequently, every active mining district has become encumbered with tangled groups of doubtful or conflicting locations, whose rights and boundaries, when any valuable ore is found, must usually be determined by lawsuits that are as expensive and as distressing as the stakes are high. So deeply has litigation entered into our mining system that a claim whose rights have never been disputed would probably be set down offhand, by $miner of the old school, as of no value. Think of the litigation over rights of possession on the Com-stock lode—12 leading companies involved 'in an aggregate of 245 suits within a period of less than eight years! Ambiguous local records; the chance of erroneously placed or obliterated monuments; doubt as to the sufficient performance of the statutory annual labor; uncertainty as to prior conflicting or overlapping locations; anxiety as to the changing attitude of the Department of the Interior and the Forest Service—such considerations as these make an unpatented mining claim an unclean thing in the eyes of possible investors. During the year, there were 570 oil wells completed for a total daily initial production of 365,352 bbl. The daily oil potential of the field, effective Jan. 1, 1935, as established by the Texas Railroad Commission, was 306,102 bbl. with a daily allowable of 58,800 bbl., whereas, on Dec. 31, 1935, the potential was 587,376 bbl. with a daily allowable of 57,800 bbl. Because of the limited market demand, the allowable decreased although the potential increased. In August, the five-day test for determining the potential production of a well was replaced by a 24-hr. test. The reason for this change was that some of the oil-pur-chasing companies contended that too much oil in excess of the limited market demand was produced during the five-day tests. Dry Gas.—During July, the Texas Railroad Commission supervised the first complete and accurate field-wide test of open flows that has been made in this area. The total open flow as determined at that time was 16,426,085,000 cu. ft, There were 79 gas wells drilled in '935, with a combined open flow of 2,408,000,000 cu. ft. and 50 depleted oil wells were plugged back for gas with a total open flow of 529,800,000 cu. ft. The total new gas production for the year was, therefore, 2,937,800,000 cu. ft. The 17 natural-gas pipe lines drawing on the Panhandle supply of fuel gas withdrew a daily average of 420,497,507 cu. ft., or a total of 153,481,-590,000 cu. ft. for the year. The 44th Texas Legislature passed a statute known as House Bill No. 266, which was designed to prohibit waste and protect correlative rights by compelling the ratable production of gas. The part of the law relative to withdrawal of sweet gas became effective Aug. 1, 1935, and the part referring to withdrawal of sour gas became effective Oct. 1, 1935. Three of the major pipe line companies attacked the validity of the ratable production feature of the new law and a preliminary injunction was granted by the Federal District Court. The final hearing on the incrits of the case is scheduled for the early part of January. Natural Gasoline.—Forty of the 42 natural-gasoline extraction plants in the Panhandle operated throughout the year. One plant discontinued

MINING occupies a position of less importance than manufacturing or agriculture in Canada, but its relative contribution has increased greatly during the post- war period. Mineral production was only 5.14 per cent of the net value I of production of all kinds of commodities in 1919, but by 1936 the pro- portion had risen steadily to 12.76 per cent. Mining felt the depression, hut unlike agriculture, which is still ' sorely stricken, it has passed from early convalescence to complete recovery. For each of the last two years new high records were established for the industry as a whole and for the quantity of most metals produced. Mining has had a notable effect on - the growth of the power industry in Canada. Water power has been developed in the same or adjacent areas wherever mining camps have been 1 established, with few exceptions. Consumption of electrical energy by the mining industry gained 72 per cent within a decade, rising from 1604 million kw.-hr. in 1926 to 2754 in 1935. I. CORT'S INVENTIONS. Under this head, it is unnecessary here to enter into details. The facts have been repeatedly published, and a brief outline of them will be sufficient for my present purpose. . Henry Cort, born in 1740 at Lancaster, England, became a navy broker in. London about 1765, and gained from that business in about ten years. something more than £20,000, which lie devoted to perfecting the manufacture of iron, building a mill at Fontley, near Portsmouth, and prosecuting, between 1777 and 1783, the experiments which culminated in .his two patents, one for puddling iron and the other for shaping it by rolling between grooved rolls.: Careful study of the contemporary evidence, including Cort's specifications, the testimony (in act as well as word) of his business rivals, the public declarations of eminent authorities, and the history of the times, leaves no possible doubt that Cort was the real inventor, of

Experiments have shown that the use of enriched air would be of particular benefit in the roasting of zinc ores for the manufacture of sulfuric acid. Enriched air increases capacity of furnace, decreases fuel consumption, and increases SO2 content of roaster gas. THE work here described had for its purpose the procuring of data from which some quantitative estimate might be made of the results obtainable by using oxygen-enriched air in roasting zinc ores on a commercial scale. The principal metallurgical advantages of using enriched air in roasting zinc ores would be: 1. The rate of roasting would be increased, with consequent gain in the capacity of the roasting furnace. 2. As less air would be required for roasting, the volume of hot gases leaving the furnace and the heat carried out of the furnace as sensible heat in these gases would be less per ton of ore roasted; partly for this reason and partly because of the increased quantity of heat generated in the furnace by the larger amount of ore that could be roasted, the consumption of fuel by the furnace would be lessened; and by the use of air sufficiently enriched with oxygen the necessity of using fuel might be entirely obviated. 3. Roaster gas having a higher SO2 content could be produced; this would make possible greater capacity and more economical operation of the sulfuric-acid plant. Certain phases of the application of enriched air to roasting can be worked out only by experimenting with a furnace of commercial, or at least semicommercial, size. Thus the precautions necessary to secure proper distribution of heat in the furnace;1 the volume of enriched air,

Cobalt crystals of commercial purity have been tested in tension. Their resolved shear stress-shear strain curves are very similar in form to those for zinc, magnesium, and cadmium. There is an initial linear region for shear strains up to around 150 pct, the ratio of work hardening slope to shear modulus at room temperature being about 2 X x This is followed by an upturn, which is, PLASTIC deformation in metal single crystals with close-packed structures has been found strongly dependent on stacking-fault energy. The high stacking-fault energy hexagonal metals magnesium, zinc, and cadmium have been quite extensively tested, but up to now no data have been available for a comparable hexagonal metal with low stacking-fau1t energy' An however, smaller in magnitude for cobalt than for the other metals. Values for the critical resolved shear stress rise from 97 kg per sq cm at room temperature to approximately 170 kg per sq cm at -196 °C. The Cottrell-Stokes ratio is not constant either for variations in the strain rate or for temperature changes, its value decreasing with strain. investigation into the plastic deformation of cobalt, which has a very low stacking-fault energy, has therefore been undertaken. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Cobalt crystals in the form of rods 0.3 cm in diam were grown in an electron-beam floating-zone refiner at a rate of zone travel of 25 cm per hr. Sharp, Jr. (Assistant Professor of Geology, University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo.)-Geothermal gradient and surface temperature data anomalies are potentially useful tools in mineral exploration, These data, however, may reflect a number of geologic and hydrologic processes as well as the thermophysical properties of the geologic materials. The author presents a relatively simple model which may be of value in mineral exploration. The lack of consideration of other processes, however, limits its usefulness. For instance, because of erosion or sediment deposition over geologic time the land surface must be considered a moving boundary in such a model. Evaluation of this effect coupled with annual surface temperature and thermal conductivity variations can result in temperature profiles such as shown in [Figs. 4 to 7]. These effects and others, such as ground-water movement," must be considered and filtered from the data before proper interpretation is possible. Another assumption which should have been discussed is, why were the observed mean surface temperatures not used for extrapolation of the gradients in [Figs. 4, 6, and 7?] Conductive heat transport responds to the actual boundary (land surface) temperature, not to theoretical temperatures in the absence of perturbations. Benfield presents a theoretical model for calculating perturbations in the geothermal gradient for erosion and sedimentation. The temperature (T) at any time (t) and any depth below the surface (x) is given by [ ] where T is the mean surface temperature, G, the geothermal gradient, v, the rate of erosion (or sedimentation),[ ], the long-term rate of change of T0, and k is the thermal diffusivity of the rock. Using the author's values and a rate of erosion of 1.54 cm per yr for a period of 10,000 yr, a thermal profile as shown in [Fig. 10] will be generated. A thermal diffusivity of 0.0164 sq cm per sec was used, corresponding to a thermal conductivity of 0.0082 cal per cm per sec per C. In [Fig. 11], a sediment deposition rate of 3.0 cm per yr for a period of 1000 yr was used to generate the subsurface temperature profile. A surface temperature of 24.3°C was used, as specified in [Fig. 9, 7], was set equal to zero for both cases. Superposition on the generated profiles in [Figs. 10 and 11] of the annual surface temperature variation perturbation (which may be calculated in a number of ways) will yield profiles similar to those in [Figs. 4 and 7]. Similar profiles can also be produced by regional ground-water flow. Models like the author's can be of value in mineral exploration. Other processes, however, which affect surface temperatures and gradients must first be considered, calculated, and filtered from the data if anything but the crudest qualitative interpretation is to be made. Practical and statistical considerations concerned with the sampling, sample preparation and chemical analysis of precious metal ores are reviewed. The principal requirements related with the characteristics of sample cutter, sample preparation, equipment and methods are discussed. The main errors introduced in the different stages of the sampling systems are defined. The application of statistical techniques to evaluate these errors to determine the ore grade variation and to design the number of increments needed to get an accurate assay are presented. Finally, results obtained with the application of this method to gold and silver ores are analyzed and some recommendations are given.

The adsorption density of dodecylammonium ions at the quartz-solution interface has been Theadsorptiondensitydetermined as a function of collector concentration and pH. A ten thoushasbeenandfold range of amine salt concentration was covered at neutral pH. Experimental results show that over a thousandfold concentration range at neutral pH, the adsorption density (I) is proportional to the square root of collector concentration. Except at high concentrations, I increases with increases with increasing pH, but in general this effect is surprisingly small. . , . . A critical pH curve has been established for the flotation of quartz with dodecylammonium acetate. The conditions along the flotation curve are correlated with the adsorption measurements. THE behavior of collectors at the mineral-solution interfaces is usually explained in terms of an ionic adsorption process. Through the distribution of collector ions between the solid surface and the- co-existing solution phase the mineral is believed to acquire a water-repellent surface coating. Quantitative adsorption studies have been made on simple flotation systems1-4 only within the last few years. Such investigations were made possible by the adoption of the radiotracer method of analysis. As a consequence of these studies a new parameter has been added to aid the understanding of the flotation process. The research investigation to be discussed in this paper was undertaken to obtain a better understanding of the behavior of a cationic-type collector. This objective was approached through the determination of the distribution of dodecylammonium acetate between the quartz-solution interface and the solution as a function of the collector salt concentration and pH. To bring this investigation to focus on the more practical aspect of flotation research, an attempt was also made to correlate the adsorption results with actual flotation tests. Quartz: A —100 mesh ground crystalline quartz was infrasized; the products of the third and fourth cones were mixed together and reserved for experimental purposes. This stock material was cleaned by leaching in boiling concentrated HC1. After leaching the quartz was rinsed with distilled water until the filtrate showed no trace of chloride ian. It was then washed several times and dried. The qwrtz had a specific surface of 1400 cma per g as deterhined by the krypton gas adsorption method. Collector: The distribution of dodecylammonium acetate between the quartz surface and the solution phase was determined by the radiotracer method of analysis with carbon 14 as the tracer element. The radioactive amine salt with C" synthesized into the hydrocarbon chain5 was supplied by Armour and Co. The tracer element was located adjacent to the polar group. The radioactive salt as received had a specific activity of about 0.14 mc per g. When desired, dilution of this activity was effected by addition of non-radioactive dodecylammonium acetate also supplied by Armour and Co. ........ All other inorganic reagents used in this research were of reagent grade. Conductivity water was used for making up all solutions. Adsorption Tests: Two different experimental methods were used. In the first, to be designated as the agitation method, a weighed amount of quartz and a measured volume of amine salt solution were agitated in a 100-ml or 50-ml glass-stoppered pyrex graduated cylinder. The cylinder was filled with solution up to the stopper, since erratic results were obtained when an air space was left over the suspension. Time of agitation varied from 1 to 2 hr. Preliminary tests at different agitation times showed that the amount adsorbed remained constant for all agitation times exceeding 1/2 hr. After this conditioning period, the solids were separated from the solution by filtration through a Buechner fritted-disk funnel. The solution was re-circulated 10 times or more to allow the fused silica disk to come to equilibrium with it. Determinations of the amount of amine adsorbed on the frit itself indicated that this amount was less than 10 pct by weight of the amine acetate abstracted by 10 g of quartz. The funnel with quartz covered by a thin layer of solution was then centrifuged for approximately 5 min, at which time the moisture content of the solids was reduced to about 5 pct by weight. The wet quartz was blown into a tared beaker, re-weighed and allowed to dry at room temperature. A final weighing was then made to determine the moisture content. The second experimental method, similar to the procedure adopted by Gaudinand Bloecher,' will be referred to as the column method. Two liters of solution were passed through a bed of quartz contained in a Buechner funnel attached to a pyrex separatory funnel by means of a ball and socket joint. Preliminary tests showed that increasing the volume of solution above 2 liters does not give a measurable increase in adsorption. From 4 to 4 1/2 hr were required for 2 liters of solution to pass through the column. The moisture content of the quartz was again reduced to a minimum by centrifuging. A slightly modified column apparatus was used for experimenting with alkaline amine solutions. OLIP-line observations on copper alloys, using the electron microscope, have been made by a number of workers,13 but this work has been confined to a brass. In a CuAl alloys Koppenaal4 and Koppenaal and Fine5 have made observations with the optical microscope and by the use of interferometry. They found that the observed slip step heights inside the Liiders bands accounted for only 42 pet of the total macroscopic strain. The suggestion was put forward that optically unresolvable slip in other parts of the specimen accounted for a major part of the macroscopic strain. This is surprising since it is known from other workers that slip in a brass is inhomogeneous; i.e., large amounts of slip occur on individual {lll) closelys paced than being shared by a large number of closely spaced planes. Furthermore, a brass and a CuAl alloys with high concentration of aluminum exhibit similar deformation characteristics and slip-line patterns. Prior to investigations into the behavior of copper and a CuAl alloys under reversed stresses in tension and compression, some preliminary experiments have yielded results which the authors think resolve this discrepancy, and throw some further light on the behavior of a CuAl in tension. An experiment was carried out on a 10 at. pet CuAl single crystal, of gage length 7.5 cm, diameter 3.1 mm, and orientation shown in Fig. 3 (inset), for the purpose of resolving the above discrepancy. The specimen gage length was electropolished for 10 min in a 50:50 orthophosphoric acid (SG=1.75)-distilled water system, with 2 v across the cell and a current density of 0.5 amp per sq cm. The cathode was made of copper. After a tensile strain of 0.067 ± 0.001, intense slip was observed over a length 2 cm of the gage length whilst the rest of the specimen was relatively undeformed. In the lightly deformed region, slip bands of mean width 20 /x were spaced about 1 mm apart on average. The transition from the heavily slipped region (usually called a Liiders band) to the lightly deformed region was gradual, the slip-band density increasing as the "Liiders band" was approached. In the latter, the slip bands became so close together that, to the naked eye, the specimen appeared to be continously slipped, and the typical microtopography of this region is shown in Fig. 1. Twelve electron micrographs were taken at random from replicas of the Liiders-band region, and the widths of the slip lines were measured. The slip lines account for an over-all tensile deformation of 7.0 ± 0.7 pet, after allowing for the lengths of the un-slipped regions, which is in good agreement with the macroscopic strain. The distribution of slip-line widths was also measured and is shown in Fig. 3. Since Koppenaal could not resolve slip lines with height less than 540A (limit of resolution represented by dashed line), then it was deduced that he could have measured only about 50 pet of the deformation within the 'Liiders Band'. It is concluded, contrary to the suggestion of Koppenaal,5 that virtually all the macroscopic strain is accommodated within the "Luders band" and that there is no need to invoke fine slip distributed uniformly over the gage length.

INTRODUCTION The NIMCIX contactor was developed in the late sixties at the National Institute for Metallurgy in South Africa, for the main purpose of extracting uraniuy from relatively low-grade uranium solutions. ' The concept was sufficiently developed by 1974 to permit the operation of a 1500 litre per minute column to treat unclarified urgnium-bearing solution under industrial conditions. The plant operated so successfully that several large-scale units have subsequent18 teen constructed and are operating efficiently. ' Total resin consumption figures as210w as 3 per cent per annum have been reported, and the extraction efficiencies of the installations have been exceptionally good. All the solutions treated have been acidic in nature and in every case have been of such a nature as to significantly depress the maximum uranium loading on the resin beads. The chemical constituents of the leach solution fed to the loading column determines the ease with which the soluble uranium can be absorbed by an ion exchange resin. The concentration of competing ions and various resin foulants define the nature of the continuous ion exchange equipment required for efficient extraction performance. The basic NIMCIX concept is retained in these various alternate designs, but batch or continuous elution methods with fully automated or manual control systems may be selected for the different process solution conditions. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE NIMCIX CONTACTOR The NIMCIX ion exchange column is a multi-stage fluidized bed contactor which is designed to permit a counter-current flow of solution and resin in order to maximize extraction efficiency. The flow o resin is periodic, based on the Cloete and Streat 5 principle of reverse flow. The basic operating cycle can be divided into five periods, as illustrated in Figure 1. For the purposes of describing the cycle, the loading column is considered; how- ever, a similar sequence may be applied to the operation of a NIMCIX continuous elution column. S'I'EP 1: During the forward flow period, Solution flows up through the column and fluidizes the resin contained in each stage. The uranium depleted solution overflows the upper flared-section of the column as the tail solution. Step 2: The flow of solution to the column is temporarily stopped and the resin is allowed to Settle onto the plates in the column. STEP 3: During the reverse flow period, a fixed volume of solution is drained from the column to the transfer vessel. This flow causes resin transfer to occur from stage to stage and also out of the bottom stage. At the end of this period, which expires when the low level switch (LS) is actuated, some of the resin is left in the conical section of the column and the pipe interconnecting the column and the vessel. STEP 4: The cone flush period ensures that all the resin left in the cone of the column and the pipe is transferred to the transfer vessel before forward flow commences. STEP 5: The loaded resin in the transfer vessel, which has been isolated from the column, can either be hydraulically transferred to the top of the elution column or eluted in the vessel before being transferred to the top of the loading column. The major advantages associated with the NIMCIX concept are: (i) Simple method of operation (ii) Contactor can readily be scaled up to large diameters. (iii) Because the resin does not pass through pumps or airlifts, and valves cannot be closed on resin beads at any time, the resin losses are exceptionally low. (iv) Operating costs are low. (v) Relatively few valves in the system. (vi) Stable operation is achieved over a wide range of feed rates and concentrations.

During the initial nine-year deple-tion of the McKamie-Patton pool gas-condensate reservoir, the pressure behavior and fluid analyses indicated pressure maintenance by gas injection would be attractive relative to continued pressure depletion. As a result, a gas cycling program was inaugurated in Aug., 1949, which has since maintained reservoir pressure. In order to evaluate the benefits of this program, the recoveries for natural depletion and for cycling followed by blowdown were determined by calculating the fractional balance of the molar quantities of vapor and liquid remaining in the reservoir and produced at the surface for various stages of depletion. The results of the investigation show theoretical ultimate recovery due to the cycling program will be 42 per cent greater than would be realized under pressure depletion type operation. INTRODUCTION The benefits of gas injection pressure maintenance programs in condensate reservoirs have been recognized and qualitatively described in several papers1-8 during the past 15 years. Some of these papers also describe methods for calculating the increased recovery realized from cycling; however, as a rule, hypothetical reservoirs were used as examples".'.. This paper presents an evaluation of the pressure maintenance program for the McKamie-Patton condensate reservoir and includes a description of the fractional balance method employed to determine the benefits. Reservoir Development and Characteristics The McKamie-Patton pool, Lafayette County, Ark., was opened in June, 1940, with production obtained from the oolitic Smackover lime at a depth of approximately 9,300 ft. The structure is an anticline 8 miles long by 1 to 2 miles wide, and is one of many productive Smackover structures in Southern Arkansas. Of predominant importance is the condensate-bearing gas cap portion of the reservoir, which covers approximately 4,000 acres, attains a maximum thickness of some 200 ft, and has an average thickness of 90 ft. Development of the cap was accomplished with 21 wells drilled on 160 acre spacing. An isopach map of the cap is shown in Fig. 1. In addition, an oil rim is present along most of the periphery of the pool. Production practice includes field separation of black oil, and a high pressure gathering system which carries total well stream from gas cap wells to a plant where condensate is separated and the gas is processed for recovery of natural gasoline, butane, and propane. Since the gas contains appreciable hydrogen sulfide, it is removed by amine contact, after which free sulfur is produced by the Claus process. Core analyses from 1,767 gas cap formation samples averaged 14.2 per cent porosity and 379 md dry air permeability. Connate water was restored on seven samples of gas cap rock by air-brine capillary techniques, from which the interpreted water saturation averaged 28.17 per cent. During the early life of the field, it was believed the recovery mechanism, based on several of the other regional Smackover reservoirs, might be a natural water drive. However, subsequent production and pressure history revealed that the gas cap would not be produced by water drive, but would behave as a closed reservoir.
