Coal mine bumps are normally associated with pillar mining under moderate or deep cover. Severe bumps at Sunnyside, however, have not been confined to pillar lines. Many have occurred in virgin development and in localities a long way from active pillar workings. As early as 1918 bumps in virgin territory were attributed to the faulted structure in the Sunnyside area.' Sunnyside is an old property, mined for more than 60 years. Both man-made and natural conditions contribute greatly to bump occurrences, and loss of life and great destruction of workings have resulted from some unusual bumps in recent years. Before Kaiser Steel acquired the Sunnyside Mines in 1950, about 21 million tons of coal had been extracted. Large areas had been worked out and equally large areas first-mined. As demand for coking coal gradually diminished, extensive blocks were shut down, and during the low production period of the 1930's mining on a very limited scale was confined to a section of the property close to the coal tipple. Following purchase of the property Kaiser Steel developed the mines into a fully modernized operation. The worked out and first mined areas covered about four square miles extending five miles along the strike and up to one and a half miles down dip from the outcrop. The sections with favorable mining conditions and clean coal had been largely extracted under the selective mining system imposed by economic conditions and the lack of cleaning plant facilities. Large reserves remained on the fringes of the worked out sections and in areas under deep cover and difficult roof. There were also considerable reserves in first-mined areas. In recent years much of Sunnyside's daily output of 7000 to 8000 tons has been derived from the partially mined localities. Many bumps have occurred when pillars have been pulled within the first-mined areas and on the fringes. The bumps have been associated with retreating pillar lines backing up against old workings and pillar lines in old first-mined areas backing up against highly stressed oversized barrier pillars surrounded by smaller pillars. In some parts of the property the upper Sunnyside seam was extensively worked in the past, and sizable areas of old works overlie the present lower seam workings. Abutment pressures from barrier pillars and pillar remnants are transmitted to the lower seam, contributing to bumps and squeeze conditions. Cover: The terrain is exceedingly rough, and cover varies considerably over relatively short horizontal distances. For example, at No. 1 mine the 2000-ft cover line is ony 2700 ft from the coal outcrop, and at No. 2 mine the cover over the main hoisting slope increases from 1000 to 2000 ft in a horizontal span of 1200 ft. Cover over the present mining sections ranges from several hundred feet in the valleys to 2500 ft under the crest of the divides. A short distance ahead of Sunnyside's deepest development down dip the cover reaches 3000 ft or more.

Although 1930 has been a year of stagnation, proration and curtailment, the Gulf Coast has measured up to its tradition in the matter of interesting and significant discoveries. Only 2 domes and 7 new structural areas were brought into the producing column in 1930, whereas, in 1929, 13 domes and one structure were added to this list, yet a total of 14 new producing horizons were proved on various domes and structures. On 5 domes new flanks were successfully tested for commercial production. The year 1930 has shown at Barber's Hill that oil in commercial quantities may exist below salt or cap. Numerous wells have been drilled through cap, or even salt itself, into good producing sands. The past year has been particularly notable in the interest and in the number of deep holes drilled. Two wells have gone below 8000 ft. in each of the states of Texas and Louisiana, and in the two states together 14 wells have gone below 7000 ft At the beginning of the year only one well was producing below 6000 ft. in coastal Texas, while at its end, 19 wells were producing or had produced. Geophysical discoveries and activity on the Coast have waned and this type of work has moved further inland. The peaks of production at Pettus, Barber's Hill, Raccoon Bend, Refugio, Orchard and at Humble, in Texas; and at Lake Barre, Port Barre, Black Bayou, White Castle and Vinton in Louisiana, were seen this year. These were new peaks for Humble and Vinton, of course, these fields having previously gone through periods of peak flank production. In Table 1 the completions listed are for the entire month of December in both years. It is remarkable that in 1930, a year of overproduction and proration, there were actually more wildcat operations at its end than at the end of 1929; but it is gratifying that the operations in the proven fields were exactly one-half what they had been at the end of 1929. The price of A grade coastal crude, or oil below 25" Bé., has been cut from $1.30 at the beginning of the year to $1.00 at its close; and B grade, or oil above 25o Bé., has been reduced from a price range of $1.15 to $1.63 down to a range of from $0.75 to $1.22. The influence of cobalt and nickel on the properties of steel might be readily expected to be very similar. The two elements occupy close and somewhat unusual positions in the periodic table, their chemical behavior and compounds are so completely analogous and their various physical properties, including the ferro-magnetic characteristic, show such 3 remarkable correspondence, that there is no doubt of a strong resemblance existing between these two metals. However, the variety of properties that are obtained from steel is due largely to the fact that the element iron possesses allotropic forms. Alloying elements that affect these allot ropic forms, or alter the nature of the allotropic changes, exert a profound influence on the resulting steel. In the case of nickel and cobalt, although these elements are very similar chemically and physically, it is found that they differ distinctly in their individual effects on the critical points of iron. Both nickel and cobalt form a series of homogeneous solid solutions with iron at temperatures above 1500" F. The difference in their behavior does not occur until changes begin to take place in the solid state below this temperature. An inspection of the respective thermal equilibrium diagrams at the lower temperatures makes the opposite effects of nickel and cobalt clearly evident. Effect of Nickel and Cobalt in Binary Alloys with Iron The binary diagram of iron-nickel has been investigated by a number of workers. The lower temperature portion in Fig. 1 is reconstructed from the data of D. and H, Hanson.1 The diagram of iron-cobalt, shown in Fig. 2, is taken from the work of Ruer and Kaneko.2 Masumoto3 has recently discovered a lower critical point in cobalt and this has been added to the diagram. Layers of magnetic taconite of above average magnetic iron content extend down dip on the Mesabi Range to depths beyond the reach of open pit mining. A selected layer with thickness of 75 to 100 ft underlies many square miles. Such a selected layer can provide over 50 million tons of recoverable concentratc per square mile, at lower concentration ratios than in the present open pit taconite operations. The system contemplated would consist of large scale underground quarrying by a lane and pillar method. Working heights would be 60 to 100 ft; room widths, 50 to 75 ft; and productivity targets, about 40 tons per man-shift. The most critical problems would he roof control and blasthole drilling. The successful operation of large open pits and concentrating plants for treatment of magnetic taconites indicates that the basic techniques and economic problems of pellet production have been solved. The open pit reserves are large, but they are not necessarily available in sufficient quantity or quality to provide an adequate raw materials base for all potential producers. Furthermore, as the more easily available open pit crudes are used up, the pits will become deeper, stripping costs per ton of concentrate will increase, and recoveries will decrease as leaner crudes are utilized. The time will come when supplementary and replacement reserves of magnetic taconite will be required. One way these can be obtained is by underground mining of the down-dip extension of the Mesabi magnetic taconites, especially those layers averaging well over 25% recoverable iron. A key point in such a proposal is the possibility of realizing substantial savings by beneficiating an ore of 30% magnetic iron at 2.5 to 1 ratio of concentration. This contrasts with current practice in Mesabi commercial taconite plants, where the ore averages 22 to 25% magnetic Fe, with concentration ratios of about 3.0 when producing 61% Fe pellets. Two factors which favor the eventual development of underground taconite mining are: 1) the desirable physical structure and high grade of taconite pellets in general and 2) the improved engineering techniques in underground mining. Bumper subs are currently used in offshore operations to permit a constant weight to be carried on the bit while drilling, regardless of the vertical motion imparted to the drill pipe by drilling vessel heave. As shown in this paper. the vertical motion of the lower end of the drill pipe (the bumper sub end) may be appreciably greater than the vessel heave. Therefore, the necessary stroke of bumper .rubs for successful operation is greater than thought in fie past. Also, there is an appreciable tendency of the drill pipe to buckle above the unbalanced type of bumper sub. Thus, more drill collars than previously used should be carried above unbalanced bumper subs to keep drill pipe straight. INTRODUCTION Drilling bumper subs are placed in the drilling string for various reasons. This paper is concerned with their use only as an expansion and contraction joint while drilling from a floating rig. In this application the bumper subs are normally located just above the drill collars and their function is to allow the driller to maintain accurate weight control on the bit regardless of up-and-down movement of the drilling vessel. This paper analyzes the effects of bumper subs on the drilling string and presents recommendations for their future use. When subjected to vertical oscillations, the drilling string behaves like a long, distributed system of mass and spring. The magnitude of vertical motion at the bumper sub is always greater than the heave of the drilling vessel due to the dynamic reponse of the drilling string. The ratio of these motions increases with the length of the drilling string, and may reach values of 1.5 or even 2 with strings 16,000 ft long. Thus, the total travel required in bumper subs can be considerably more than the motion of the drilling vessel. Lack of knowledge of this fact could have contributed to problems previously experienced with bumper subs. This fact can also lead to fatigue problems in the drilling string for very deep wells. Satisfactory operation should be obtainable whether hy-draulically balanced or unbalanced bumper subs are used in the drilling string. Theoretically, the balanced sub is preferable since its use does not require placing drill collars above the bumper sub to prevent drill-pipe buckling, an inherent characteristic of the unbalanced bumper sub. The current method of calculating weight of drill collars required to prevent helical buckling of drill pipe above unbalanced bumper subs is erroneous. Placing drill collars above the sub to prevent drill-pipe buckling has the same effect on dynamic response as increasing the length of the drilling string by an equal weight of drill pipe. Thus, total travel required in the subs is increased. Means for calculating the correct weight, which is much greater than previously thought, are given in this paper. BALANCED VS UNBALANCED BUMPER SUBS A drilling bumper sub is essentially a telescopic joint capable of transmitting torque at every position of its stroke. Thus, it allows the operator to isolate the weight of the drilling string from the weight of the drill collars above the bit. This permits the driller on a floating rig to maintain accurate control over the weight on bit — a control that is unaffected by vertical motion, due to wave and tide action of the drilling vessel. UNBALANCED BUMPER SUBS The unbalanced bumper sub is simply a splined tele~copic joint (Fig. I). Ordinarily, this arrangement will operate satisfactorily, but the presence of drilling fluid under pressure results in a pressure force that acts downward on the drill collars and bit, tending to open or extend the bumper sub. This downward force is equal to the pressure drop across the bit times the area indicated by diameter d2 in Fig. 1. Denoting this force by Fd, and the pressure drop across the bit by ?p yields Fb = (p/4)d22(?P) .........(1) There is also an upward-directed force given by Fu = (p/4) d22-d21)(?p) .......(2) which puts the drill pipe immediately above the bumper sub in compression, resulting in helical buckling. However, buckling is actually more severe than expected in that buckling occurs as if the compression were equal to Fd, rather than to Fu. This surprising phenomenon is well known as far as tubing is concerned;1-3 but, in contrast with the case of tubing, this force may shorten drill pipe only a few inches. Thus, this cannot explain the operating difficulties that sometimes have been encountered. However, having the drill pipe in compression and helically buckled is contrary to current practice; therefore, drill collars whose weight in mud is equal to the force Fd should be added above the bumper sub. This novel safety-lamp, which was first introduced in some of the German coal-mines in 1882, at once attracted general attention in the coal-districts of Europe. Objections which arose during the early stages of its use at the mines have gradually died away with the increase of experience in handling the lamp 011 the part of the miners, and the continual efforts to perfect it on the part of its inventors. Wolf's lamp has rapidly surpassed all its rivals, and has already a greater distribution on the Continent than any one of its older sisters. In the course of two and a half years, the manufacturers have sold 25,000 of the lamps, besides remodelling several thousand rapeseed-oil lamps. This great success, which of itself speaks loudly enough as to the superiority of the Wolf benzine-lamp, is corroborated by both official and private reports, which all agree in pronouncing this lamp the best yet brought forward. It was described in a paper by Mr. Eugene B. Wilson, read at the Chicago meeting of the Institute, in May, 1881,* in which its salient merits were briefly but clearly indicated. Every previous improvement of the original Davy lamp has been directed to one or more of the following main points: 1. Light of greater and more uniform intensity. 2. Freedom from smoke or soot, which clogs the gauze and other parts of the lamp. 3. A greater safety and sensitiveness in the presence of firedamp. 4. An illuminating material which, satisfying the foregoing conditions, should be also cheap. 5. A lock which could not be opened in the mine by the miner. 6. An arrangement for lighting without opening the lamp. 7. An arrangement for changing the size of the flame in the closed lamp, to supersede the picker, the danger from which is explained in Mr. Wilson's paper, already cited. It may safely be said that wolf's lamp was the first to secure all these objects. The adoption of benzine instead of rapeseed-oil (previonsly the best illuminant) has completely satisfied conditions 1, 2, 3, and 4. Benzine gives a much clearer, stronger, and more uni-

Reverse combustion is one thermal method of recovering hydrocarbons from porous undergrortnd formations containing oil or tar. In applying this method, air is introduced via an injection well and the mixture of air and hydrocarbons is ignited in the production well. A combustion zone then recedes toward the injection well, counter-current to the air flow. If the combustion-zorie temperature is sufficiently high, the oil or tar irz place is distilled arid cracked. The hydrocnrhon flows as a vapor to the production well and subsequently is condensed at the surface. Maximum temperature and velocity of morcment arc the two dependent variubles defining the progress of the combustion zone. A theoretical analysis has been made of heat flow in the reverse-comhustion process as.srtrning linear flow in a homogeneous system. Heat loss to surroundings has little effect on the maximum comhustion-zone ten?perature achieved, but it is reflected in a reduced com-bustion-zorzc, velocity. It is also predicted that an increase in the oxygen-hydrocarbon reaction rate results in a reduction in the maximum temperature reached. The calculated results are in agreement with results from reverse-combustion experinments using samples of a tar sand. INTRODUCTION Reverse combustion is one thermal method of recovering hydrocarbons from porous underground forma-tions containing oil or tar.' In applying this method, air is introduced into the underground formation via an in-jection well. In one or more adjacent production wells, the mixture of air and hydrocarbons is ignited at the sand face. The combustion zone thus formed recedes toward the injection well, counter-current to the air flow (Fig. 1). Under certain conditions, the rate of recession of the combustion zone is sufficiently rapid that only a small fraction of the hydrocarbon at any point in the formation is consumed by combustion. If the combustion-zone temperature is sufficiently high, the uncon-sumed oil or tar in place may be partially distilled or cracked. This material then can flow as a vapor with the gaseous combustion products to the production well and subsequently be condensed at the surface. Under other conditions, the combustion-zone temperature may be so low that little, if any, of the hydrocarbon is vaporized. Nevertheless, the viscosity of the hydrocarbon may be reduced enough so that other recovery methods subsequently can be applied to produce oil at attractive rates. The maximum temperature achieved in the combustion zone and the velocity of movement are the two dependent variables defining the progress of the combustion zone. Presumably. knowledge of these factors will permit estimates to be made of oil recovery efficiency, oil and gas producticn rates and average amount of injection air required per barrel of oil recovered. The maximum temperature and combustion-zone vclocity are, in turn, expected to be dependent upon air flow rate, heat losses to surrounding formations, physical properties of the rock and the hydrocarbon. the extent to which the porous formation is saturated with the hydrocarbon, the rate of oxidation of the hydrocarbon and the amount of heat released. It is desirable that the relative importance of each of these factors be understood so that the results of laboratory tests of oil recovery by reverse combustion can be properly interpreted in terms of expected field performance. It was stated in a former paper1 that an intensive study of anthracite costs was being made by the engineers of the United States Fuel Administration. The results of this study are now available and are offered as a supplement to the former paper. Anthracite costs as reported for the 6-months period, December, 1917, to May, 1918, inclusive, as compiled by the Federal Trade Commission, were used as a base, and charts similar to those described in the former paper were made for the standard white ash anthracite and for red ash and Lykens valley coals. Adjustments The adjustments of cost from a reported to a price-fixing basis, as described for the bituminous methods, were applied but showed only minor adjustments as necessary. The great spread in anthracite prices on the varyingsizes, which for the 6-mo. period under review ranged in average from $5.244 for nut to $2.074 for barley coal, makes the question of the percentage of sizes produced at the different collieries a vital one. The realization with the same prices for each size must be within very wide limits, when it is considered that the percentage of prepared coal reported from different collieries varied from over 80 per cent. to below 30 per cent. for fresh-mined coal. Hence, as the spread in prices for the various sizes must be predicated on some percentage, it is essential to find some method of adjustment to allow for this variation. The logical method of adjustment is to calculate actual costs to costs as of the standard percentage of sizes, so that the margin between the adjusted costs and the average realization shall be the actual margin for each colliery between its actual costs and actual realization due to its particular percentage of sizes. As a base for realization the actual percentage of sizes for fresh-mined coal for the 6-mo. period was adopted. This percentage is given in Table 1.

The alloys of gold and iron were investigated in 1907 by Isaac and Tammann,l who determined the thermal diagram for the entire system by thermal analysis and microscopic examination. They also reviewed the previous literature. Since that time the present authors have been able to find only two additional references. Guertler and Schulze2 examined the electrical resistance of iron alloys containing up to 40 per cent by weight of gold between 0" and 200" C.; the alloys were in the form of wires. The main result of this work was to confirm the solid solubility limit found by Isaac and Tammann; namely, about 20 per cent Au. More recently, Shih3 has examined the magnetic properties of gold alloys containing up to 10 weight per cent iron and particularly the range below 5 per cent. The alloys in the lower range were found to be paramagnetic; the 10 per cent alloy was ferromagnetic. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the solid solubility limits at various temperatures, particularly below the a-y transformation point of iron, since these solubilities are of some importance in connection with the working of the alloys in the manufacture of certain "grey" and "blue" golds. Materials and Methods The gold was obtained from the U. S. Metals Refining Co. and contained 99.99+ per cent Au. The electrolytic iron had been annealed in hydrogen and contained impurities as follows: P, 0.035; Si, 0.001; S, C, Mn, Cu, each 0.01 per cent. Active interest in the North Central Texas area centered in the development of the Palo Pinto limestone-producing zone, near the town of Avoca, in the northeast part of Jones County. This producing horizon was discovered in 1937, in the Iron Mountain Oil Company's well No. 1 Olander, in sec. 196, B.B.B. & C. survey, at 3238 to 3250 ft. During the development of this pool, it was generally referred to as the Avoca pool. As a second pool has been discovered in the same producing zone, also near the town of Avoca, the writer has taken the liberty of changing the name of the original Avoca pool to Avoca-Olander pool. Forty producers had been drilled in the Avoca-Olander pool by the end of 1938; their initial ranged from 28 to 300 bbl. per hour. Stimulus was given to the interest in the development of the Palo Pinto limestone when the Ungren-Frazier No. 1 Griffin, in sec. 199, B.B.B. & C. survey, Jones County, found the limestone from 3225 to 3250 ft., with an initial production of 931 bbl. per day. (This new pool has been given the name of Avoca-Griffin pool, by the writer.) The best well to be completed, up to the present time, is the Bert Fields No. 1 Taylor in sec. 199, B.B.B. & C. survey, which had an initial production of 748 bbl. in 3 hours. The Owen-Snebold No. 1 McKeever in sec. 158, B.B.B. & C. survey, in northwest Shackelford County, added to the interest in the Palo Pinto limestone when it extended the Ivy pool with a well in the Palo Pinto limestone from 3145 to 3183 ft., and was estimated good for 6,000,000 cu. ft. of gas and 6000 bbl. of oil per day. During 1938, Stonewall County obtained its first commercial producer when the Stonewall Oil Co. in No. 1 Parriott discovered the Palo Pinto limestone saturated from 5169 to 5176 ft. and tested 371 bbl. per day. Two new producing horizons were discovered about 2 miles east of the old Noddle Creek pool, Jones County; the first, the Humble Oil & Refining Co. No. 1 Irvin, in sec. 48, block 18, T. & P. R. R. Co. survey, which had saturated limestone from 2550 to 2567 ft. and was good for 100 bbl. per day; the second, in the Humble No. 1 Horton, sec. 40, which

THE introduction of a new fuel, such as natural gas, necessitates careful study where it has not been used previously. At the El Paso smelter natural gas required the installation of apparatus with which no one at the plant was familiar, either as to the type of equipment needed or as to the burning of the gas in it. Observation of existing installations of a similar character and assistance from gas engineers served as a basis to determine what was advisable to use. Book Review MAN-TO-MAN: THE STORY OF INDUSTRIAL DEMOCRACY. By John Leitch, Phila¬delphia, Pa. The B. C. Forbes Publishing Co., New York, 1919, 2.19 pp., 7 1/2 X 5 in. $2.00. "Man to Man" is a short, well-written, well-printed, easy to read and very interesting hook. It is an account of a method introduced into more than twenty industrial plants to give the workers a share in managing their own troubles. It is not a panacea for labor troubles and strikes, but neither have existed where the new method has been tried. The scheme is, in a word, to organize the working force like the government, having a cabinet composed of the executives, a senate composed of foremen, and a house composed of men elected by fellow workers from all departments. This governing machinery takes up all complaints of workers, investigates, reports, and settles. The increased profits due to economy and increased production from this cooperation are divided 50-50 between the company and the men. Experience has shown that, since inattention, tardiness, irregularity, and inefficiency tend to reduce their profits, all men very quickly, after once convinced of the sincerity of the management in their scheme of cooperation, eliminate them because it is for their personal profit. Astonishing results have been attained, including higher wages, greater output, lower unit costs, great reduction in labor turnover, elimination of waste, an increased loyalty and a waiting list of employees even in periods of labor shortage. Profit sharing as such and stock ownership as a benefit to industrial relations are discussed briefly and illuminatingly, although they are not believed by the author to he the best way to bring about the human relation between those who work,for and those who work with money. The author is not against unions but does not believe the union is the best medium for improving industrial relationship. The look is nowhere dogmatic but is always forceful and convincing and, being well written, is very entertaining. It is doubtful if "Industrial Democracy" is the right expression for the solution of the problem but certainly anything that will place on the shoulders of labor some of the responsibility of industry and will increase production is tine much-to-be-desired desideratum. It is a. contribution to the solution of our biggest problem and should be read by everyone who employs men and who has been worried by the labor turnover. P. E. B.

The temperatures of solid-liquid interfaces have been measured during the growth of Sn-Pb alloy crystals which exhibited a cellulur substructure. A simple descriptive theory was used in combination with this data and the other measurable growth variables to predict some features of the solute segregation such as the intercell excess concentration and the depth of cell grooves during freezing. The effective distribution coefficient at the tip of a cell, a, was predicted and experimentally found to vary in the range, 1 >a > k0. At the lower limit, the severe segregation that must arise between dendritic cells was substantiated by various observations such as the existence of a second Phase even for alloys of only 0.2 wt pct Pb. ThE cellular morphology of a solid-liquid interface is known to coincide with the formation of a zone of constitutional supercooling ahead of the interface during growth.' The occurrence of various cell structures, (two-dimensional cells, regular cells, dendritic cells), has been quantitatively investigated,'2,4 but the segregation of solute which arises as a consequence of this mode of growth has only been examined qualitatively. WHEN a liquid alloy freezes, the solid first formed usually differs widely in chemical composition from that last formed, so that there is segregation in the alloy as cast. For example in the copper-nickel system (fig. 1) the first solid formed from a liquid containing 55 atomic pct Cu may contain as little as 38 pct Cu, while the last must contain well over 55 pct. Three factors may act to decrease segregation from the maximum possible. 1. Diffusion in the cooling solid tends to make the phase homogeneous, decreasing segregation. This may be important at slow rates of cooling. 2. Segregation is impossible without diffusion in the liquid. At extremely rapid rates of cooling there may not be enough time to allow maximum segregation. 3. Supercooling delays nucleation to temperatures well below the liquidus thereby decreasing segregation. Hence the first nucleus in the copper-nickel system may contain well over 38 pct Cu. At sufficient supercooling the first nucleus may form below the solidus, in which case there is no reason to expect any segregation whatever. From these considerations, we could predict that at sufficiently low rates of cooling the alloy would be unsegregated because of factor 1 and at sufficiently high rates of cooling there should also be no segregation because of factors 2 and 3. Considerable segregation should occur only at intermediate rates of cooling. We have demonstrated experimentally that segregation can be completely suppressed by rapid rates of cooling. For the alloys studied, however, these rates are too great to be attained in any commercial practice. An alloy of 55 atomic pct Cu, 45 atomic pct Ni was frozen by cooling at varying rates. The degree of segregation in the solid was determined by X-ray diffraction photographs. Slow rates were obtained by slowly cooling the furnace containing the liquid alloy; fast rates by pouring or ejecting droplets of the alloy into water or iced sodium hydroxide solutions. The cooling rate of the droplets can be cal-culated from their dimensions by assuming reason- able values of thermal conductivity.' The experi-ments were repeated with an alloy of 16.5 pct Cu and 83.5 pct Au. A single experiment also showed a 50 atomic pct Bi-Sb alloy had no segregation at the most rapid quench. The position of back-reflection X-ray diffraction lines is a highly sensitive function of the lattice constant, which in turn depends on the chemical composition of the phase. A phase of varying composition will give broad diffraction lines. By measuring the edges of these lines and making suitable corrections for intrinsic line width, it is possible to determine the range of lattice constants represented. These can be converted to chemical compositions from a lattice constant vs. composition curve. Results are shown in table I. In the copper-nickel system the greatest segregation is found at the slowest cooling rates, where the lowest percentage of copper theoretically possible is found. In the copper-gold system, on the other hand, the degree of segregation is decidedly less at the slowest rates of cooling, being greatest at 11,100°C per sec. At no rate is the theoretically lowest percentage of copper (12 pct) found. At the rates of cooling found in sand and die castings the degree of segregation is large and depends little on the rate of cooling. DURING some experiments made by Henry J. Miller, partly in Germany and partly in the United States, in which it was found necessary to melt metals in quantities up to 60 kg. in a vacuum or under low pressures of hydrogen, molybdenum was tried as the resistor in the electric melting furnaces. Molybdenum ribbons 16 by 0.55 mm. and 18 by 0.45 mm. were used as resistors. The furnaces were of the type shown in Fig. 1. [ ] About the heating tube, Y, are wound parallel resistors of molybdenum ribbon from the water-cooled electrodes, E1, E2. The whole is within a copper container having outlets for the removal or introduction of gases and a window, W, for observation, the space about the heating tube and electrodes being filled with insulating material. The life of the molybdenum used as the resistor was found to depend very much on the manner of using it, its failure being due in some cases to thinning by evaporation or chemical reaction and in others to hardening, which prevented it from following the expansions and shrink¬ing of the heating tubing without cracking. As such failures are often rather expensive in commercial work, it was thought worth while to determine the causes. The factors influencing the behavior of molybdenum resistors used in this manner may be briefly stated as follows:

The new potash refinery of Duval Sulphur & Potash Co. produced its first tonnage of muriate of potash in November 1951. Full capacity was attained in early 1952. Excellent extraction efficiency is being obtained by the process, which is basically froth flotation. System temperature control is practiced and has proved to be of great metallurgical value through high potassium recovery and. low reagent cost. WHEN Duval Sulphur and Potash Co. recently entered the established potash industry, the vast amount of pioneer work essential in an entirely new endeavor was unnecessary. Thus it was possible to screen and assemble proved techniques into a highly efficient process based on the combined knowledge of the industry. It is hoped that the refinements Duval has added to these cumulative achievements will contribute to the rapid advance of the potash industry and related enterprises. The process selected utilizes as raw material syl-vinite ore typical of the Permian Basin. This ore is principally comprised of interlocked crystals of potassium chloride, about 40 pct, and sodium chloride. Also there is as much as 1 1/2 pct of dispersed clay slime which, because of its nature, highly complicates beneficiation of these ores. The refining method is basically flotation in which the mineral sylvite is floated away from the halite-clay gangue to produce a 60 pct K,O muriate of potash product for the plant-food trade.
