The study of the plastic deformation and recrystallization of metals has been the subject of many investigations. In regard to the simple deformational processes, such as tension and compression, the early knowledge gained from studies of polycrystalline material has been supplemented by many significant researches on the behavior of single crystals. Unfortunately, this has not been true for more complicated deformational processes. As far back as 1927, G. I. Taylor1 wrote: It is impossible in the present state of knowledge to do more than give a possible reason why (face-centered cubic) crystals set themselves with a (110) direction in the plane of rolling, and at right angles to the direction of rolling. The explanation of why the orientation of the crystal axes round the transverse direction is what it is, must be left till the distortion of metals, and particularly single crystals of metals in the process of rolling, has been studied in greater detail. That this gap in the systematic study of deformation and recrystallization has not yet been filled was indicated by C. H. Samans, who wrote in 1934 that "only four investigations upon cold-rolled single crystals of any of the face-centered cubic metals have been reported in the literature." Of these four studies, only those of S. Tanaka3 and T. Sakaoj4 both of whom worked with aluminum crystals, had quantitative significance. The other two, carried out by F. Wever5 and W. G. Burgers16 were of a qualitative nature. It is our hope that the present investigation may contribute something to the knowledge necessary for a rationalization of the origin of rolling textures in terms of the known behavior of single crystals, and may add pertinent information concerning the recrystallization characteristics of deformed single crystals.

OVERWHELMING proof of the importance of oil in a modern national economy is afforded by the present European War. Treat¬ies and national boundaries have been cynically violated to secure greater supplies of the precious fuel. Petroleum substitutes have been desperately, and far from successfully, sought. The whole German military theory of the drang nach Osten, the drive to the East, is directed at cutting the British supply of oil and securing a supply for Germany. This is a war of machines, and the machines of war feed hungrily on oil. In view of this fact, it is surely comforting to know that we are living today in a nation which has surpassed all the rest of the world not merely in unearthing the raw supplies of petroleum which lie beneath its surface but also in every phase of the industry in mining, refining, processing, production, and distribution.

T RACES of sulfur have a marked influence on the physical and mechanical properties of many iron-base alloys. The commonly used combustion method for the determination of sulfur content is not accurate enough at the 50 ppm level by weight and below to be useful in determining the influence of sulfur. Kriege and Wolfe' have described a method for the determination of sulfur in iron alloys in which the sulfur is evolved as hydrogen sulfide followed by reaction with N, N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine, and iron (111) to form methylene blue which is measured spectrophoto-metrically. This method of determining sulfur has been used to study the activity of sulfur in Fe-Si-S alloys,' but has not been previously applied to the determination of sulfur in Fe-Ni alloys because of the insolubility of nickel in dilute hydrochloric acid. Dissolution of nickel in dilute hydrochloric acid, however, can be greatly accelerated by the addition of a small amount of platinic chloride.3 By combining these two techniques in a procedure in which 0.005 pct platinic chloride in 1:l hydrochloric acid is used as the dissolving fect on the strength of the material. However, ductility is influenced by the presence of discontinuous precipitation. In Fig. 5, percent elongation data at room temperature and 1400°F is shown for two sets of specimens of Waspalloy which were solution heat treated at 1950°F and either quenched or slow cooled to the aging temperature and then aged for 100 hr at 1292" and 1598ºF, respectively. At room temperature the existence of a discontinuous precipitation cell at grain boundaries (see data point marked by arrow) has no apparent effect on ductility. However, at elevated temperatures a pronounced lowering of ductility occurs when discontinuous precipitation has occurred in the specimen. It would appear that the morphology of discontinuous precipitation "cells" at grain boundaries would be highly conducive to the initiation of cracks which in turn lead to premature "grain boundary" failure.

D R. CHARLES W. ELIOT, the great educator and philosopher-he of the five-foot book shelf-recently gave expression to a thought I had long been cherishing as a private opinion, when he said: "It is obvious that standardization has become a dangerous adversary of progress in both education and industry." This idea must have been more widespread than either of us knew, for some five years ago a writer of verse for one of the comic papers dealt with it at great length. I will quote only a few of his stanzas to illustrate his understanding of "A Standardized Existence" : A visitor at large, I stand Beneath a standard sky- Where everything is standardized To please the standard eye. Each tree is of a standard height, Each building is the same; Each man is uniform in height, And has a standard name. SO many variations of lead-zinc ores occur in nature that it is impossible to state any rules that will apply to the concentration of ores of this type. Some have lead and zinc in approximately equal amounts; others may have pre- dominant amounts of one or the other metal. There are gradations from all sulfide to completely oxidized minerals. Some such ores carry little pyrite, others contain much more pyrite than they do lead and zinc combined. The behavior of ores in flotation is largely a function of their lead-zinc ratios. their content of pyrite or pyrhotite, the nature of existing soluble salt conditions, the character of the gangue constituents: and the speed with which the minerals float. For the purposes of this paper only those lead-zinc ores handled commonly in present-day flotation practice will be considered. These are practically all-sulfide ores with relatively minor degrees of sulphatization or oxidation.

The United Verde Extension mine is located in the Jerome mining district, on the eastern slope of the Black Hills, approximately northeast of the town of Jerome, Yavapai County, Arizona. The ore deposit may be termed a replacement in Yavapai schist. This schist is one of the oldest formations in the district, being probably of volcanic origin, and has been folded and faulted and contains intrusions of diorite and quartz porphyry. It is believed that the mineralization followed the porphyry intrusions and replaced the country rock; this was followed by erosion and a period of secondary enrichment, all completed in pre-Cambrian time. Later sediments of sandstones and limestones, to the depth of approximately 600 ft. (182 m.), were laid down, followed by volcanic flows. Faulting and erosion again took place, resulting in the present complicated arrangement of the strata. Prospecting, therefore, is very difficult, because the sediments practically cover the mineralized areas. This necessitates the sinking of deep shafts, cross-cutting, and, in some instances, diamond drilling to learn something of the various relations of the different formations and the occurrences of intrusions associated with ore deposition. The locating of new orebodies, therefore, is beset with innumerable difficulties. EARLY MINING METHODS The two orebodies constituting the principal resources of the company are known as the small orebody and the Bonanza, or large orebody. These are about 150 ft. (45 m.) apart, and while they appear to be distinct orebodies may later prove to be connected. The character of the ore, the general associations of the porphyries adjoining the orebodies, and other characteristics, both in the ore and general environment, are very similar. The small orebody was the fist to be discovered and was mined for some time before the Bonanza was found. At first, a large amount of ore was extracted by means of development work, but as the smelters treating this class of ore were located from 60 to 400 mi. (96 to 643 km.) away, only the highest grade yielded a fair profit and it became necessary to do selective mining. The main workings

The immense commercial value of the Gayley dry-blast process has been established beyond controversy. The testimony of practical blast-furnace managers, on both sides of the Atlantic, agrees that it reduces the cost of pig-iron about $1 per ton; but from the same testimony it appears that this direct economy does not by any means cover its commercial advantages—in fact, that under conditions frequently encountered in practice, it presents other benefits of even greater immediate financial importance. To this point I shall recur in a later part of the present paper. The history of the reception given to this invention, especially on the other side of the Atlantic, has repeated an experience familiar to American engineers. First, the reports of our practice were rejected as theoretically impossible, according to generally accepted notions and formulas; then the figures were reluctantly accepted; and finally the attempt has been made to explain how they could have been obtained. As to the Gayley dry blast, me Americans have been for several years in the last stage of the discussion, and the rest of the professional world is rapidly coming to it. Meanwhile, the remark has been repeatedly made that, whatever Mr. Gayley's process may turn out to be worth, it was not an invention on his part, but simply the energetic and persevering execution of a procedure already proposed by others. This question I wish to discuss first in the present paper. I. What Did Mr. Gayley Invent? Realizing that this is not the place for detailed argument on an issue of patent law, I shall not undertake to quote and criticise the publications prior to Mr. Gayley'a first patents. ALEXANDER PARKES patented in England in 1851-52-53 a process for desilvering lead by means of zinc, making use of the greater affinity of silver for zinc than for lead, discovered by Karsten in 1842. The efforts in England to develop it commercially were not particularly successful, nor was the attempted introduction into the United States. This last was not surprising, as it was about the beginning of our Civil War, and at that period there was very little lead-bullion produced in the united States and there was no field for the process here. There was at that time on Staten Island an establishment that pattisonized lead, probably from Rossie, N. Y., and Chester, Pa., and possibly some Spanish lead, but the production of lead-bullion in the Far West had not yet begun. In 1864, Edward Balbach, of Newark, N. J., patented in this country a process for desilvering lead by means of zinc, and in 1867 Edward Balbach, Jr., patented a " movable black-lead retort with a neck, placed in a furnace," for the purpose of distilling the alloy of zinc, lead, and the precious metals. A brief comparison of the Parkes and the Balbach processes is interesting. The Parkes process as practiced in England consisted in stirring into silver-bearing lead, melted in a kettle, from 1 to 2 per cent. of zinc, cooling, skimming the alloy of lead, zinc, and silver that rose to the surface, liquating it in an iron retort, distilling the residual rich alloy in fire-clay retorts, thus regaining the zinc, and refining the desilvered lead at a low heat in a shallow cast-iron pan that formed the hearth of a reverberatory furnace. THE system of pitwork used with the Cornish pumping engine, and which, for want of a better name, we may call the Cornish system of pitwork, consists essentially of a series of plunger-pumps, situated one below the other, in a shaft or incline, the plungers being operated by a rod called the pitman or pump-rod, which must, therefore, extend from the motor at the surface to the lowest pump. The subject will be best understood by reference to Fig. 1, in which k may be taken as typical of the ordinary plunger-pump, in which S is the suction pipe, u, the lower valve situated in the H piece T; v, the upper valve situated in the valve-box O; I, the mounting-pipe or column through which the water is carried to the surface; L, the plunger-barrel, and P, the plunger working through the stuffing-box, and actuated by the branch rod r, which is attached to the main pump-rod, R. The action of the pump is as follows : On the ascent of the plunger, acting now by suction, the water flows from the reservoir through the valve u, into the barrel, L. On the descent of the plunger, the water is forced up through the valve, v, which acts merely as a check valve, into the pipe, I, through which it is, at each successive down-stroke of the plunger, forced upward until it reaches the next reservoir, from which it is taken by another similar pump, and so on until it reaches the surface or drain-tunnel. The pump is obviously only single-acting, i. e., it acts only during one-half of its entire stroke. The weight of water raised during the up-stroke of the plunger is equal to the weight of a column of water whose base is the area of the plunger and whose height is the mean distance between the plunger-face and the surface of water in the lower reservoir, a distance not usually exceeding 12 or 15 feet, and which obviously cannot under the most favorable circumstances, exceed 25 or 30 feet. The water forced up during the down-stroke is equal to the weight of a column of water whose base equals the area of the plunger and whose height equals the length of the mounting column above the mean position of the plunger-face, say from 150 to 300 feet. The work described in this paper was carried out in the Research Laboratories of the British Aluminium Company Ltd., under the general direction of A. G. C. Gwyer, Scientific Manager of the Company. In considering the effect of stress?corrosion conditions on metals, or the failure of metal through stress corrosion, it is evidently advisable to adopt a clear definition of the meaning of those phrases. There appears to be general agreement that stress-corrosion conditions may be defined as the continuous application of static stress to a metal while it is exposed to corrosive conditions, but recognition of the occurrence of true stress-corrosion in a metal is often a difficult matter giving rise to some confusion. For the purpose of this paper stress corrosion in a metal is defined as the acceleration of corrosion by the application of static stress. On this view it is necessary to test a metal not merely under stress-corrosion conditions, but also under the same corrosion conditions without the simultaneous application of stress, if the liability of the metal to stress corrosion is to be assessed. Failure of a metal under stress-corrosion conditions is sometimes quoted as evidence of stress corrosion (for example, by Althof(1)2), but this evidence is totally inadequate if the above definition is

The mill is a departure from gravity concentration and has gained a reputation for the low initial cost of erection, extreme simplicity and the low cost of milling on the refractory character of the ore which is treated. The structure is of heavy timbers with board walls and corrugated roofing. The floors are concrete and the general layout is of the ground floor only. All the machines are driven by individual motors and the transmission usually found in such a plant is entirely absent. (Fig. 2.) ORE The ore from the Galena mine is sheared Wallace quartzite replaced with quartz, siderite, pyrite, sphalerite, gray copper (tetrahedrite) and very fine-grained argentiferous galena. Much of the silver is undoubtedly associated with the gray copper, the amount, however, apparently varies with different localities in the vein. An average assay of the ore is 6.0 per cent. lead, 1.3 per cent. zinc, 0.3 per cent. copper, 17.5 per cent. iron and 4.5 oz. silver. The concentrates produced are of an average 53 per cent. lead, 40 oz. silver, 8 per cent. zinc and 11 per cent. iron, while the tailings are 0.5 per cent. lead, 0.4 oz. silver. With the present market for zinc no attempt is made to produce a zinc concentrate.

The roles of the phase diagram and the diffusion and solubility analyses in the selection of sources for the diffusion of zinc into GaAs are discussed. Isothermal sections of- the phase diagram are described at 1000°, 775°, 744°, and 700°. Below 744° the three solid phases, Zn3As2, GaAs, and ZnAsz, may be in equilibrium. In the composition regions where the three solid phases are in equilibrium, the partial pressures of the components do not vary with composition and there is no liquid phase. A diffusion source composition within that region containing 5, 50, and 45 at. pct Ga, As, and Zn was selected to yield reproducible diffusion profiles without surface damage. The 5/50/45 ternary source Provides a significant improvement in the reproducibility and planarity of- the zinc diffusion as compared with other zinc diffusion sources that result from starting with elemental zinc, dilute solutions of zinc in gallium, or various combinations of zinc and arsenic. Several experimental diffision profiles for the 5/50/45 diffusion source have been determined. The profiles are very steep in the region of the junction and produce devices that exhibit step junction behavior. The junction depth varies as the square root of time. Diffusion at 700°C for 4 hr gives a 5-µ junction depth and a surface concentration of 2.4 x1020 cm-3. The surface concentration is enhanced by a factor of three and the junction depth decreased by a factor of ten as compared with diffusion with a starting source 01- elemental zinc. The differences in dijyusion behavior with these two sources are due primarily to the approximately 10' greater equilibrium As4 partial pressure for the 5/50/45 source. ThE most common technique for the preparation of GaAs p-n junctions for diverse applications ranging from switching diodes to injection lasers has been to diffuse zinc into the solid from the vapor phase. The zinc impurity has generally been provided by introducing into a diffusion ampoule elemental zinc, dilute solutions of zinc in gallium, or various combinations of zinc and arsenic. For the purpose of eliminating surface deterioration, zinc has been diffused into GaAs through SiO2 films1 and from zinc-doped SiO2 films.2 During a study of the injection and recombination mechanisms in GaAs junctions, we found that these diffusion techniques either resulted in nonreproducible diffusion profiles and nonplanar junction interfaces or were extremely inconvenient to use. An unpublished report by Allen and pearson3 emphasized that an understanding of diffusion requires relating the diffusion conditions and system compositions to the ternary phase diagram. Recent studies have made it possible to relate the effect of starting source composition on the GaAs sample surface and diffusion profile reproducibility and, in addition, to estimate the expected surface concentration and zinc diffusivity. These studies include the Ga-As-Zn phase diagram,415 the determination of the incorporation reaction for zinc as a substitutional impurity,6 and the analysis of the concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficient.' In this paper the role of the phase diagram in the selection of the starting diffusion source composition is illustrated, and an application of the diffusion and solubility analyses is used to demonstrate their utility in the estimation of surface concentration and diffusivity for various starting source compositions. Consideration of the isothermal sections of the ternary phase diagram shows that below about 744° C a composition region exists where the three solid phases Zn3As2, GaAs, and ZnAs2 are in equilibrium without a liquid phase. In this region the partial pressures of the components do not vary with composition, and thus the surface concentration and diffusivity depend only on temperature. A diffusion source composition within that region containing 5, 50, and 45 at. pct Ga, As, and Zn was selected. As will be described in detail, this diffusion source yields reproducible diffusion profiles without surface damage, planar junction interfaces, and steep profiles that result in devices with step junction behavior. Only closed diffusion systems are considered. Open or flowing vapor systems require the maintaining of constant vapor pressures in the flowing gas and represent control problems outside the scope of this discussion.

FRANCE will be given a large portion of the Marshall Plan funds for relief, reconstruction, and industrial development in France and in her colonial possessions. At present that country is not in position to export any large tonnages of the mineral products needed in the United States. However, if, through Marshall Plan aid and private capital investment, production of these products can be largely increased, agreement should be made by which the United States is to get a substantial portion of such increased output in part payment for the material and technical aid they receive. France issued a decree, published in the "Official Gazette" on Feb. 3, 1948, which permits conversion into dollars of dividends derived from dollar investment in Government-approved projects and will agree to a scale of capital amortization to be determined in each individual case. This decree is to encourage private capital to cooperate with local capital in industrial undertakings. When a dry ball-mill grinding circuit was in- stalled at the pellet plant of Hamersley Iron Pty. Ltd., it was something of a pioneering venture, since this was one of the first instances where such a circuit had been applied to iron ore on a major scale. The Hamersley pellet plant is located in Dampier on the coast of Western Australia. The feed for it consists of -8mm fines produced as a screened product at the Mt. Tom Price mine 186 miles inland from Dampier. It was these fines that encouraged the choice of a dry grinding facility for the plant. At the outset, tests had shown that the fines could not be filtered satisfactorily with a wet grinding system. At the pelletizing plant, the fines are stockpiled, reclaimed, dry ground in ball mills, formed into pellets on balling discs, hardened on an indurating line, and stockpiled for shipment overseas. These operations are shown in Fig. 1.

MINE safety is of the utmost importance to all operators and most operations have a safety organization, or safety inspector, whose job it is to be continually on the alert to detect and correct the hazards of mine operation. Reports from the Bureau of Mines show that next to roof falls, gas presents the greatest hazard in mining. The Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6680 shows that 162 explosions occurred in the United States during the five-year period ending June 30, 1932. Deaths resulting from these explosions amounted to 984, with a great many disabled and disfigured. A fatality rate of 6.07 persons shows the ex¬treme severity of this hazard to the industry. Various mine appliance companies have put on the market instruments for methane detection, which record in direct percentages the amount of methane present in the atmosphere. Unfortunately, few mining companies are using these instruments, however. Those available include the Burrell methane detector, the Wolf, the Martienssen, the Mine Safety Appliance detector, and the Union Carbide Company methane detector, which last I have used extensively in making mine inspections.

IN the long list of our illustrious and lamented dead, there are names which recall personality as well as career and achievement; social as well as scientific merit; devotion to the Institute itself as well as to some one of the professions which it represents. These men we remember because they did not forget us; besides our pride in their wider work and fame, we are proud of what they did with and through us; especially do we rejoice if our early recognition of them opened the way to a recognition by the world; and in their departure we claim to sorrow, not merely as members of an appreciative public, but also as. bereaved personal friends. In common with thousands, we regret our loss, but we do not regret only-we mourn and miss. To this group of those whose death has brought to us the double sense. of public and private grief belonged our strong, bright, dear brother, in whose memory this inadequate tribute is offered. Charles Benjamin Dudley was born July 14, 1842, at Oxford, Chenango county, N. Y. He came on both sides of New England blood, his father being from New Hampshire and his mother from Connecticut. Emigrating from the rocky hills of their native States, they. settled upon the more fertile soil of what was then regarded as the West, and, with thousands of other pilgrim sons, imitating the pilgrim fathers, contributed to the foundation of new commonwealths. The Empire State owes much to this element of its population. Dudley's early education was obtained, like that of the sons of the pioneers generally, by attending the village school and academy in the autumn and winter, while he worked upon the farm during the rest of the year. But his ambition looked forward to a college-course; and this was almost within his reach when a passion still stronger took possession of him. The out-
