THE experiments described below are a continuation of work on the graphitization of cast iron conducted as part of the program of funda-mental research at Battelle Memorial Institute. In previous work it was found that melting in hydrogen increased the amount of eutectic and in others i produced al marked changes in the size of the graphite flakes. These effects seemed to be III sulphur and manganese present in the material studied. Iron-carbon- respond silicon alloys did same manner as mg cast iron and there was no evidence to show that hydrogen was able to stabilize the carbide in such alloys unless additions of sulphur were made. In order to hoist the ore according to grades, stope samples are taken. Three equidistant grooves are picked across the breast at right angles to the dip of the ore, the part removed being caught in the hand and then put into a small bag. When there is broken ore in the breast, the lines are continued down the pile and a small amount taken at intervals of the length of the sampler's pick handle. The quantity of sample from each breast will be between 2 and 3 Ib. If there are two grades of ore, bessemer and non-bessemer, there are two sets of brass checks for each chute, each check stamped with the number of the chute; one set of checks has the word "bessemer" and the other "non-bessemer." Before any ore is removed from the chutes, it is the duty of one man to see that the proper set of checks is at each chute in the mine. As each motor car is loaded, a check is attached to it. When the train reaches the shaft, the sample man removes the check on the first car, notes the grade, and directs the motorman to spot it over the proper pocket. The check is then hung on a hook with the number corresponding to the chute from which the ore came. The sample man throws a short rope with a knot in the end over the car and at the point where the knot falls a standard scoopful is taken. This is placed in a large bag that hangs directly under the hook containing the checks for that particular chute. These chute samples represent a check on the grading of the various contracts and by counting the tags a check is obtained on the miner's tally of the ore going into each chute; the total of the checks represents the hoist. During the stocking season, a standard scoopful is taken from each top tram car. This sample is taken in the same way as the chute samples at the plats underground. Top-of-car Samples These samples are taken by using a rope, preferably a clothesline, knotted each 18 in. of its length, and a hammer and a scoop. The standard scoop measures 31/2 by 21/4 by 11/4 in. and holds about 1/2 Ib. of ore. The rope, as applied to the usual railroad cars at the mine, is knotted into fifteen sections. The aim of this paper is the description of a technique to be applied to the study of sections of metal powder particles, less than 20 microns in diam. with the electron microscope, by the replica method, using for replica a material such as formvar or parlodion. This work originated with the study of particles of tungsten powders. Such particles were too small to be examined in sufficient detail with the light microscope. On the other hand, examination with the electron microscope of the powders dispersed in the supporting film was not found satisfactory because: 1. It did not permit differentiating between single particles and aggregates. 2. It did not show the true outlines of the particles but only the projection of a whole surface. 3. No details appeared. For that reason it was attempted to make replicas of sections of the particles imbedded in a mounting material suitable for polishing and etching. The method proved satisfactory for the examination of tungsten powder and was then extended to car-bonyl nickel and carbonyl iron powders. The literature of milling is replete with papers devoted to the subject of ball milling, all of which no doubt have contributed in one way or another to progress in that art. In this paper reference will be made to only a few of the many authors, but the value of the contributions of all who have written on that subject is hereby acknowledged. With a few exceptions the efforts of most students of the subject have been devoted to laboratory investigations of principles. Davis1 was one of the first to report on plant-scale investigations and to present to mill men certain criteria for the guidance of ball-milling practices. His conclusions with respect to the significance of sizing analyses of classifier sands in their relation to the factors of mill speed and ball sizing are particularly referred to. Those conclusions were: 1. If the balls are large or the speed of the mill is high, crowding will appear at the finer sizes in the classifier sands. 2. If the balls are small or the speed is low, crowding will appear at the coarser sizes in the classifier sands. 3. The indications are that best efficiency is obtained when the screen analysis of the sands show a minimum crowding at any size. The last conclusion was qualified by the statement that it had not been proved conclusively. It is surprising, however, that the litera- ture of later years reveals little evidence that millmen have made any serious attempt to apply those criteria. This may, perhaps, be explained by the fact that the average plant-scale ball-milling problem presents so many variables that an investigation of any one of them encounters the problem of control of the others—a problem that often is unsurmountable in a small plant. In a large plant, in which there is a duplication of grinding units in parallel operation, opportunity may be afforded for determining the value of such criteria. Nevertheless, a study of published data from grinding circuits of both large and small plants suggests that either Davis' criteria have been tried and found inapplicable or have never been given consideration. For the purpose of testing Davis' conclusions and with improvement of ball-milling efficiency as the final objective, a test program was initiated in the concentrator of the New Cornelia branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation early in 1938. The practices of that plant have already been described.2 The fine-grinding units are arranged so that any one of eight units may be operated as a test unit and its results compared with those of the remaining units. All units receive similar feed from a common storage bin, in which the product of the fine-crushing plant is bedded by traveling tripper. The ball mills are all similar in size and operated at the same speeds, and are individually metered. The feeder conveyors of each unit are equipped with Merrick weightometers. SOME of the results of a program designed to study the kinetics of transformation and related mechanical properties of prototype Zr-X binary alloys systematically are presented here. The object of this program was to provide a sound basis for a scientific approach to the realization of optimum properties in binary zirconium alloys. Alloys of Zr-Mo (eutectoid), Zr-Sn (peritectoid), and Zr-Ti (a and ß isomorphous) were prepared and studied. The data herein are confined to a presentation of the results of studying the eutectoid prototype alloys. The Zr-Mo phase diagram has been determined.&apos; A definitive metallographic study of isothermaily annealed samples prepared from high purity elements served to position a sluggish eutectoid reaction, ß?a + ZrMo2, at 780°C. The compositions of the phases involved in this reaction are: ß, 7.5 ±1 pct Mo; a, <0.18 pct Mo; and ZrMo2, 67.8 pct Mo. Inasmuch as a lower purity sponge zirconium was used in this work boundary placements were rein-vestigated with the less pure alloys. Materials and Procedures Hafnium-free sponge zirconium was used to prepare all ingots. The arc melted hardness of a small button of this zirconium was found to be Vpn 168. Chemical analyses conducted at Armour Research Foucdation are shown in Table I, High purity molybdenum sheet was used as the alloy addition. A typical analysis is shown in Table I. Several 200-g Zr-50 pct Mo alloys were made by arc melting. Crushed granules of this material were used to ensure inqot homogeneity Ailoy ingots were prepared by double melting techniques. WELL known member of the Institute, Henry Krumb, survived the Japanese earthquake and has written a most interesting description of his personal experience to a friend in New York, an extended excerpt from which we publish, by permission, below. Not having been written for publication it has increased value as a human document in its vivid description of personal impressions and sensations in the midst of such a catastrophe. The earthquake was the most terrible experience I have ever passed through. We arrived at Miyanoshita, Friday, Aug. 31, about 6 p.m., having left Yokohama about 2:30 that afternoon by automobile. It was a most beautiful ride, although rather warm, but not unusually so, as it has been uncomfortably hot ever since we arrived in Japan. The first part of this automobile trip was along the old highway from Kyoto to Tokyo, which is lined with fine old pine trees. There are 52 villages along this highway and we saw real Japanese country life: naked children, both boys and girls, and men wearing nothing but gee-strings. The country on either side was intensively cultivated, the green rice fields and lotus ponds making a most beautiful sight. The occasional hills were all re-forested with young pines. In places the road runs close to the ocean beaches. The last part of the trip was up a steep mountain road, cut out of the side of the mountain. On one side of the road, in the gulch below, was a roaring river. The road crosses this river several times. Miyanoshita is beautifully located on the side of a mountain about 400 ft. above this river at an altitude of 1400 ft. The grounds of the hotel are laid out in Japanese style, small lakes with fish, waterfalls and dwarf trees making a very pretty sight. On the morning of Sept. 1, after walking around the garden and the hotel, we went to our room and I started to write up a few notes. Mrs. Krumb was reading a guide book. A few minutes before noon she came over to the table where I was writing and said that it was about lunch time. Just at that moment hell broke loose. It was the first earthquake I have ever experienced and I did not immediately realize what was happening. The building was shaking as a mine office might shake when heavy blasting was going on near by. Mrs. Krumb, having experienced many earthquakes, stepped to the open door between our room and the bathroom and called to me to get out from under the chande-lier. The plaster was commencing to fall and a large wardrobe fell over. I then knew what was happening and ran to the win dow. Before I reached it a large chunk of plaster from the ceiling hit me on the head and cut my forehead and nose. Mrs. Krumb ran for the other window just as the marble mantelpiece and the dresser fell. Without any hesitation, she jumped out of the win-dow and I followed suit out of the other. Luckily neither of us sprained an ankle-we had jumped 8 ft. We started to runaway from the building but had not gone more than 25 ft. when a second shock or rather a continuation of the first became so violent and the ground under our feet was trembling so that it was almost impossible to stand up without holding on to a tree. The ground seemed to have become liquid and rocked violently, it seemed to me in a vertical direction. In some later shocks the movement was more horizontal. About this time Mrs. Krumb saw the blood on my face and commenced to break down, but only for a moment: As soon as she saw it was not serious she was all right and during the following days stood the experiences and hardships as well as the best of them:

Recent work by Westwood et al. (reviewed in Refs. 1-6) has established that many rocks, minerals, ceramics, and glasses exhibit phenomenologically similar chemomechanical (Rebinder) effects when deformed in different liquid environments, apparently as the result of chemisorption-induced variations in their near-surface flow and flow-dependent fracture behavior. In particular, it appears that there exists an empirical, but apparently general, correlation between the near-surface flow stress of an inorganic nonmetal and its surface charge- namely, that such a solid is hardest at its zero point of charge (i.e., when its zeta potential [ ] = 0) and softens as [ ] increases, regardless of the sign of zeta. Moreover, because near-surface flow and fracture phenomena are two of the important determinants of the rates of machining and comminution processes, both Westwood et al. and others7 have been able to use this so-called "[ ]-correlation" to develop cutting fluids and grinding aids that in many instances have given rise to several fold increases in performance. In addition, Westwood et al. have demonstrated that both aqueous and organic environments can give rise to similar improvements in cutting rate for a given combination of tool and workpiece, provided that both impart the same surface charge to the work- piece (i.e., transfer the same number of electrons to or from its surface). This last finding implies that in any application it should always be possible to find some cutting fluid that is at once effective, cheap, nontoxic, and nonpolluting. Thus, reports of apparently similar environmental influences on the mechanical behavior of diamond,8 certain organic crystals and polymers,9-14 and coa1-15-21 suggest that it is pertinent to ask: (a) whether the [ ]-correlation (or any analogous relationship) extends to coal; and (b), if so, whether this relationship can be used to guide the development of superior aids for grinding coal. Accordingly, correlations have been sought between (1) the zeta potentials, (2) the hardnesses, and (3 and 4) the drilling and grinding characteristics of coals of different rank in different aqueous and organic environments. THE Coal Division of Battelle Memorial Institute, during the course of an investigation conducted for a coal producer, carried out extensive sampling of the fine-coal section of a preparation plant. The information obtained during the testing period was used to evaluate the overall plant operation and provided the basis for. recommended changes in the plant flowsheet. Included in the information were data for the results obtained when using a Bird centrifuge to dewater the particular coal being treated. At the completion of the investigation, the coal producer gave Battelle permission to publish the operating data for the Bird centrifuge in order to make this information available to the coal industry. The authors wish to take this opportunity to express their appreciation to this company and its officials for their willing cooperation in the matter of publication. Description of Preparation Plant: The preparation plant on which the data were obtained is primarily a jig plant. The coal being washed is a low inherent moisture, friable, Pocahontus-type. The washed coal from the jig is dewatered and sized at 1/4 in. by a Parrish-type dewatering and sizing screen. The minus 1/4-in. coal and the underflow water from the shaker screen flow to a sludge tank where, after the coal settles, the coal is conveyed by a flight conveyor into a pump sump. The pump, a 300-gpm sand pump, delivers a mixture of fine coal and water to a Bird centrifuge which produces a dewatered cake and an effluent. At the time when the investigation was made, the centrifuge effluent was returned to the sludge tank and the cake product was mixed with a coarser size of coal prior to loading into railroad cars. The semiclarified water from the sludge tank overflowed into a pump sump from which it was pumped to the jig. As originally designed, the preparation plant was intended to operate with a closed water system but it was found, soon after operations started, that for various reasons this could not be done. In order to provide for removal of excess water from the system and to aid in maintaining the desired minimum percentage of solids in the circulating water, the plant was operated to provide from the sludge tank a continuous overflow of water and fine solids that was sent to waste. The centrifuge feed represents approximately 35 tons per hour of minus 1/4-in. coal in the form of a pulp averaging 38 pct solids. Sampling Procedure: In order to obtain basic data for determining the relationships existing in the fine-coal section of the preparation plant, samples were obtained for: (1) the centrifuge feed, (2) the centrifuge cake, (3) the centrifuge effluent, and (4) the circulating water. The sampling was arranged to start on a Monday, in order to begin operations with a sludge tank full of fresh water, and was continued long enough to allow sufficient time for fine solids to build up within the water system or for a two-day, four-shift operating period. The techniques for the growth and controlled, graded doping of silicon epitaxial overgrowth layers were established. Grading of- impurities such as arsenic or boron in arbitrarily chosen profiles oiler four orders of magnitude (from I X 10Lg to 1 X 10L5 cm) was accomplished. The graded structures were grown in a stepwise manner where in the profiles were approximated by growing many separate layers with small doping-level changes between layers. Masked-area growth of silicon through windows in a SiO2 masking film was acconiplished through the simultaneous injection of HCl gas 102th Sic14 in the epitaxial reactor. The HCl served to inhihit the growth of silicon on the Sz02 surface, and also to control the cross-sectional profile of the silicon mesas. silicon from the substrate was etched out through the windows, and then epitaxial material was used to fill the holes hack in to form planar diodes. Arsenic-huried regions beneath in te- In recent months, the epitaxial growth process in semiconductor materials technology has evolved into a complex system directed at both material improvement for better monolithic integrated-circuit characteristics and the development of new silicon structures for future integrated-circuit needs. The advent of high-temperature HC1 gas etching1 grated-circuit transistors reduced V(SAT) by slightly more than one third, bringing this parame-ter to that of an isolated component transistor. When arsenic was diffused into the starting sub-stvate, it was necessary to remove any excess arsenic in order to avoid excessive audodoping of the subsequent epitaxial layer. Oxide isolation of single-crystal regions in a substrate provided complete electrical isolation of integrated-circuit components, thereby eliminating parasitic capacitance which is inherent in standard integrated-circuit processing. The process involved the etching of deep mesas on silicon Wafers, the formation of an oxide over the mesa surface, and then the deposition of several mils of polycrystalline silicon over the oxide. The original substrate was lapped and polished allay until the mesas were left isolated in the polycrys-talline matrix. The Final components were fabri-cated in the single-crystal islands. The practice of using acid-lined converters at the plant of the Old Dominion, Copper Mining & Smelting Co. was discontinued early in January, 1913, and replaced by basic-lined converters. The new equipment consists of one electrically operated 12-ft. upright converter stand and two basic-lined shells for same. These shells are provided with twenty-four 1 1/4-in. tuyeres. The mouths are 5 ft. in diameter. Owing to the fact that there is no bedding system or other large storage capacity between the mine and the smelter, the furnaces must handle as fast as produced ore and concentrates, which may vary considerably from day to day, both in tonnage and copper content. Consequently the converter is often crowded to its utmost capacity by the frequent fluctuations in the daily matte supply. From the foregoing, it will be seen that in no way can the &apos;converter be favored by running light charges or by transferring to it from other stands in operation. Neither can it regularly be allowed to cool between blows, and only occasionally can it be run at as low a temperature as might be wished. No copper precipitate or other foreign material high in copper is available to help out the tonnage. Repairs and alterations or the removal of defective tuyeres must wait until such time as a slight falling off in.the matte supply allows the converting operations to ease up. These variable conditions all combine to interfere with the systematic operating of the converter. The first 12-ft. shell was blown in on Jan. 6, 1913, and ran until June 27, 1913, when it was removed to patch the brick. A record of operations covering this period follows: Shell No. 1. Fluid flow strongly influences ingl structure and the columnar -to-equaaxed transition. Artificial flow patterns siwzilar to the nuturul ones act to induce this transition, while dampening forces act to suppress this transition. It is shown here how simple mechanical forces can be applied to a systerrz in order to induce or slipPvess relative fluid flow and the change both the structure transition and the exact structures obtained. The example used is the effect of slow rotations and oscillations 012 a cooling- ingot (of laboratory scale). The details of rotution and oscillation for various cooling rates, lenlperal~ire gradients, and sizes of ingot are related to other solidzfication variables. THE grain structure of a casting can be changed by altering the fluid motion during solidification. Just how important these changes are depends directly upon the degree to which the fluid motion can be controlled. An early step in understanding the nature and influences of fluid motion was taken by studying natural thermal convection; when a static mechanical device was used to suppress natural flow the result was opposite to that obtained when an electromagnetic device was used to augnlent flow in a pattern similar to the natural one. &apos;&apos;2 Suppression allowed more columnar growth to occur, but "augmented natural convection" brought about an earlier columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET). Since the solidification of a free ingot must have characteristics somewhere between those displayed during suppression and augmentation, we know that natural convection must influence the CET. Considerable interest has recently been developed in sage-brush oil because of its possible utilization as a flotation agent in the mining industry. A list of some of its physical properties, together with the method used in its extraction, may prove of interest at this time. Something over a year ago, a study of the essential oils in desert plants was begun in the Chemical Laboratory of the University of Nevada. None of the oils so far studied possess properties of special interest to engineers, except the oil of sage, Artemisia tridentata, which has exceptional power as a flotation agent. This plant, known as common sage brush, also called black sage, is widely distributed over the semi-arid West, being found quite generally on most of the dry plains and mountains west of Missouri. The method of extracting the oil followed in these experiments is very simple. The leaves, twigs and small branches are placed in an airtight drum, having a capacity of about 27 cu. ft. Steam is admitted through a number of ,small openings at the bottom of the retort, and the pressure maintained at 20 to 25 lb. per sq. in. for 3 hr. The escape of the steam from the retort is regulated by allowing it to pass through a stop-cock into a condenser. The water in the receiver is drawn off from time to time and the oil, which is insoluble and floats upon the water, is thus collected. At the end of 2 hr. most of the oil has been driven out, though traces continue to come over for a much longer time. By raising the pressure, the time required could probably be shortened and the yield increased, but the lack of laboratory equipment has prevented the carrying out of this experiment. The stock wood, bark and branches contain no oil, the distribution of the oil being limited to the leaves and young shoots. There is a seasonal variation in the amount of oil contained. Samples collected on different dates gave the following amount of oil: May 1, 0.42 per cent.; May 27, 0.6 per cent.; June 30, 0.72 per cent.; Aug. 1, 0.9 per cent.; Sept. 10, 1.0 per cent. The increase appears fairly constant from early spring, when the leaves first appear, until light frosts occur in the autumn. Being much interested in efficiency-work in general, and an ardent reader of writings on this subject by Frederick W. Taylor and others, as applied to manufacturing-plants, and having served my apprenticeship from mucking to the engineering design of ore-dressing and underground plants, I hope that this paper will lead others to investigate the field more fully, to the improvement of general mine- and mill-operations, as well as the advancement, intellectually, physically, and financially, of the employee and his relations with the employer. If a man who is prepared to look closely and observe broadly starts in Canada and zig-zags from camp to camp to southern Mexico, taking time casually to inspect mines, mills, and smelters, he will be pitifully impressed by the great difference in customs, and the general waste of labor, time, and money throughout the country. He will so seldom observe a dollar&apos;s worth of results given in exchange for a dollar spent that he will form a poor opinion of operating-efficiency and management. This highly-scientific department, requiring an amount of skill and executive ability equaled in few, if any, of the professions, certainly falls short of the standard established in our greater manufacturing industries. It is easily said that this is due to the diversity of conditions in mining, milling, and smelting. But on second view it must be admitted that there is room for tremendous improvements in nearly every mining-organization. The Sacaton open pit copper mine has recently been placed into production. Some problems have been encountered in maintaining grade control due to differences between early block estimates and actual production grade. A study was made using three methods for computing grade for 50&apos; x 50&apos; x 40&apos; size blocks from exploration and development drill holes; 1) The polygonal method, 2) The inverse distance squared method, and 3) The geostatistical kriging method. The results of each were compared against a control block file created by using the assay results of all blast holes drilled in the ore over three benches of the new pit. Results indicate that the kriging technique gave better estimates for grade of individual blocks than did the other two methods for this particular deposit.

IN the course of study of the heat-treatment of low-alloy steels, the behavior of alloy carbides at subcritical temperatures was found to vary from that indicated by published investigations. In order to establish the ranges of formation of carbides in low-chromium steels, a series of steels containing up to 0.60 per cent carbon and 7.5 per cent chromium has been investigated with respect to the type of carbide formed after quenching and tempering at subcritical temperatures. The types of carbide formed as products of austenite transformation to pearlitic and pseudomartensitic structures have also been determined. There have been numerous investigations of the carbides in chromium steels and diagrams of the iron-chromium-carbon system.1 Westgren, Phragmén and Negresco2 identified the following carbides in chromium steels: [Cementite Fe3C (containing up to about 15 per cent Cr) Trigonal carbide Cr7C3 (containing up to about 55 per cent Fe) Cubic carbide Cr4C (or Cr23C3) (containing up to about 25 per cent Fe) Orthorhombic carbide . Cr3C2 (containing only a few per cent Fe)] The most complete information on the iron-chromium-carbon system was supplied by Tofaute, Sponheuer and Bennek3 and by Tofaute, Küttner and Büttinghaus.4 By means of dilatometric and microscopic studies, sections of the diagram were established. This diagram showed the presence of the special carbide Cr7Ca in steels containing about 2.5 per cent to 12 per cent chromium in low-carbon steels and from about 5 to 20 per cent chromium in r per cent carbon alloys from A1 to room temperature. The present investigation has shown that a carbide inversion from Fe3C to Cr7Ca occurs in chromium steels containing more than about 1 per cent chromium after hardening and tempering at subcritical temperatures above about 500°C. The type of carbide observed to be more stable in quenched and tempered specimens was also found to be produced by direct austenite transformation in corresponding ranges of temperature and composition. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The steels used in these experiments were made in magnesia-lined crucibles in high-frequency furnaces and were poured into 2-in. ingots. The ingots were forged into 1-in. round bars, and all heat-treatments were conducted on specimens of this section .size. Sections of the bar stock 8 in. long were hardened in air, oil or water depending on the composition, after heating to a temperature sufficiently high to dissolve the carbides. The low-carbon and low-chromium steels were not entirely martensitic after quenching, and contained some ferrite and pseudomartensite. No pearlite was observed in the microstructures after auenchine. Results of the application of geo1ogic knowledge to grade control have been remarkable. Grade reduction from dilution has been diminished from greater than 9% at the time of the program&apos;s beginning to about 2% at present. This has resulted in an increase of about 1.8 lb of copper per ton of ore mined and has made a substantial contribution to earnings at White Pine during the past two years. Even more improvement is expected in the future. The White Pine orebody, situated in the southwestern portion of the Keweenaw peninsula of upper Michigan, is a gently dipping stratiform or bedded deposit. Copper distribution is stratigraphi-cally controlled with higher values being confined to specific beds in the ore column. Room-and-pillar mining is practiced. Mining technique and geologic characteristics present a special array of problems in controlling the grade of ore. A routine program of grade control was started in the White Pine mine in August 1961. The program is based upon development and application of geologic knowledge to assist mine operating personnel to increase the grade of ore, primarily by accurate stratigraphic control and selection of areas for development on the basis of grade distribution trends. Geologists work closely with mine supervisors to offer the necessary geologic guidance. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION OF COPPER The important rock series in the White Pine area is comprised of three formations of late Precambrian age. In descending order they are the Freda sandstone, Nonesuch shale, and Copper Harbor conglomerate. The Nonesuch shale is about 600 ft thick. Economic copper concentration occurs only in the lowermost 20 to 25 ft of the formation; however, within a restricted area along the southwest side of the mine the uppermost 1 to 7 ft of the Copper Harbor conglomerate (lower sandstone) contain sufficient quantities of copper to be included in the ore column. The ore consists primarily of chalcocite with subordinate native copper disseminated in shales, siltstones, and sandstones. MINE BOUNDARIES AND STRUCTURE The mine area is bounded on the west by the sub-outcrop of basal Nonesuch at bed rock surface and on the southwest by the White Pine fault (Fig. 1). The south and southeast limit of the orebody is reasonably well delineated by thinning or pinch-out of favorable host beds. Northern, northeastern, and eastern limits have not been established. The White Pine fault is actually a wide zone of shearing which strikes approximately N 40° W. It is downthrown on the southwest side and dips steeply to the northeast. Maximum vertical displacement is about 1500 ft.

Attempts to locate domestic supplies of sillimanite have been unsuccessful until recently. This paper describes recent discoveries of sillimanite-bearing schists in the Southeastern States, with emphasis on geology of the deposits, mineral composition, origin, and reserves. Statements concerning possible methods of mining, milling, and utilization of sillimanite are given. Results from refractory tests on a laboratory scale are summarized.
