THE DeHoff method' of analysis of ellipsoids of constant shape provides a quantitative metallo-graphic technique whereby the actual size distribution of the ellipsoids may be determined from polished and etched random planar sections. This method provides a useful metallographic tool since it appears to be the only method available for determining the size distribution of nonequiaxed second-phase particles. This method, however, assumes that the type of particle being studied is known to be either oblate or prolate of a fixed minor to major axis ratio, q. This, in general, means that one assumes either oblate or prolate ellipsoids of a given q and checks the total volume and surface area of the second phase as determined from the particle size distribution to values of these quantities determined by other techniques. Suitable check methods may be point counting, lineal fraction, and areal fraction methods for obtaining the total volume and the Smith and Guttman2 method of intercepts for obtaining the total surface area. If the initial guess at particle shape and q were incorrect, i.c., the volume and surface information obtained from the particle size distribution data does not agree with those values obtained by other techniques, another assumption must be made and the particle size dist distribution must be recalculated. A current study in this laboratory has involved a large number of these calculations. To facilitate the handling of the calculations, the DeHoff method was programmed in the FORTRAN language for an IBM 1620 computer. The purpose of this note is to briefly describe this program. The complete program along with a list of variable names, a sample input, and a sample output may be obtained from the senior author. Basically, the program provides for the calculation of particle size distributions for a series of q values for both oblate and prolate ellipsoids for each set of input data. The total volume of second-phase particles per unit volume are calculated for each calculated particle size distribution. The output of the program is arranged to allow a rapid comparison of the calculated volume and surface values to data obtained by independent check measurements. A condensed flow chart of the program in the notation of DeHoff1 is given in Fig. 1 The calculation of the number of particles per unit volume in the jth size class, Ni, according to the DeHoff method' is: where k(q) is the shape-correction factor given by DeHoff as a function of q for both oblate and prolate ellipsoids, A is the size-class increment, k is the number of size classes, ni is the number of particles in the ith class on the planar measurement surface, and B(j,i) are the saltykov3 coefficients which correct for measurement surfaces which do not pass through the major and minor axes of the particles. The values of /3(j,i) are included as a two-dimensional array in the program. Particular values of k(q) are included in the program in increments of q of 0.05. The first calculation is carried out for q = 1 (spheres), the second for q = 0.95 oblate, the third for q = 0.95 prolate, and so forth. The number of q values chosen for the calculation is determined by a control card in the input for each set of data.

The year 1928 has been marked by scattered but considerable wildcat drilling considering the overproduction prevalent in the oil industry. This wildcatting has resulted in the discovery of oil in one interior salt dome, several small fields producing from serpentine, Taylor marl, and Austin chalk, and two new fields producing from the Edwards limestone, one of which in the Bruner or Salt Flat area of Caldwell County promises to be of major importance if not quite as large as the Luling field. Fig. 1 shows production by fields for 1928, compared in the case of the older fields, with that for 1927. New Production From Salt Domes Boggy Creek Dome This salt dome was discovered in 1927 by core drilling and deep tests recommended on the evidence of surface geology. A large block of acreage controlled by the Humble Oil & Refining Co. covers the dome. Since the discovery of the deep-lying salt plug and oil on the flank of this dome in 1927, development has proceeded slowly. Since most of the acreage is controlled in a large block by one company there has been no intensive competitive drilling. Approximately 8 producers and 16 dry holes have been drilled. Production is from the eastern equivalent of the Woodbine and Eagleford horizons of the Mexia district, and has been found extending in a northeast-southnlest direction across the River Neches on the southeast flank of the dome. One of the best wells, the T. H. Jones No. 2, had an initial production of 90 bbl. per hr., and others have made from 100 bbl. per day to 50 bbl. per hr., but production of the better wells has either been shut in or choked down to less than 2000 bbl. per day. At the end of the year the daily average, production was about 2500 bbl. from 8 wells. Considerable gas pressure is present and one well, the Elliot Clark No. 2, drilled in 1927, was shut in with an estimated wet gas production of over 5,000,000 cubic feet.

IT has been said that carbon is "ubiquitous" with reference to iron alloys. Certainly at temperatures where carbon and iron form the solid solution, austenite, it may be readily added to, or removed from, steel surfaces. Differences in concentration potential are the sole requirements for carbon flow. To measure the rate of carbon flow, a proportionality factor, D, is arbitrarily expressed in units of (length)2 X (time)-1. If the term used for carbon concentration is weight pct C, as is customary, then a factor must be found, changing this term to one of weight per unit volume when the diffusion coefficient, D, is used in flow formulae. The determination of D values for carbon is complicated since D varies with the concentration itself. The Matano method has often been employed for systems involving a variant D. This method expreses an evaluation of unsteady flow whereby .0 is given a relationship with the numerical value of C-X slopes. The author contends that this solution is incorrect, except when D is invariant. The primary purpose of this paper is to support this contention. Here diffusion is controlled under two conditions of flow. The first part deals with the steady state; the second part considers unsteady flow under definite restrictions. Beginning with the fundamental concept, the development is continued until equations for C-X curves are obtained. The solution is then subjected to experimental data. It is realized that a great amount of reliable data is required for a rigorous proof. No such research is claimed. Instead an attempt is made to set forth the physical significance of the diffusion mechanism, and particularly to express the factors which influence the flow of carbon in austenite. Of equal significance is the implication that gaseous media may be employed with reasonable accuracy in making these determinations. THE STEADY STATE DIFFUSION OF CARBON IN AUSTENITE The fundamental experiment defining diffusion in solid metals may be readily performed for carbon in gamma iron.1 For this experiment a thin plate of medium carbon steel is chosen. The surfaces of this plate may be taken as two parallel planes which may be considered infinite for points well in the center of the planes. These two planes are held at different concentrations of carbon at a constant temperature. This temperature, 1700°F for example, is one where the single phase, carbon in solution with gamma iron, exists. When these conditions are held for a sufficient time the concentration of carbon of the different points of the solid settles down towards its steady state value. At points well removed from the ends, the concentration will remain the same along planes parallel to the surfaces of the plate.

But little has been written concerning the camp of Republic. In 1900 Chatard and Whitehead 1 reported the results of some experiments with samples of ore from the Republic mine, and a few years later Fritz Cirkel2 described the construction, operation, and results attained in the mill at the Mountain Lion mine. From time to time brief articles, mostly of a semi-technical nature, have appeared in the Engineering and Mining Journal and other mining periodicals. The general geology of the camp, especially in regard.to its areal features, has recently been ably described by Joseph B. Umpleby.3 To bring to mind the general features of the district it may perhaps be well to review briefly some facts in regard to it, before discussing the treatment of the ore. I. History and Production. The town of Republic is situated in the NW. corner of Ferry county, about 25 miles south of the International Boundary, on the head-waters of the San Poi1 river, in what was formerly the " north-half" of the Colville Indian reservation. On Washington's birthday, 1896, this portion of the reservation was thrown open to mineral location, and within a few weeks important discoveries had been made. The present Eureka mining-district was organized, the camp grew apace, and consignments of ore were shipped by wagon to Grand Forks, 30 miles away; or to Marcus, a somewhat greater distance. It is reported that the first 1,500 tons shipped from the Republic mine uetted the owners $160 per ton, after being hauled

There has been some discussion among blast-furnace operators regarding the relative merits of tuyeres of the converging type and tuyeres designed in an attempt to produce a diverging jet of air. An article1 on Progress in German Blast Furnace Practice indicates the interest in this subject abroad. This article illustrates a diverging type of tuyere which is shown here in Fig. 1A. The design appears to be rather poor as regards known properties of air flow. The adoption of this tuyere, the arlicle states, resulted in a decrease of blast pressure of about 4 Ib. per sq. in. and an increase of the output of the furnace. If the improvements mentioned are due entirely to the change in tuyere design, the subject of tuyere design seemed worthy of investigation and this paper is a report of such work. Because of the gain in efficiency brought about by the use of a diverging tuyere in the German plant, it was thought desirable to investigate the shape of the air streams issuing from various types of tuyeres to ascertain whether the gain was due to the tuyere itself or to the distribution of the air in the furnace. Since it is difficult to do experimental work on a full-sized furnace, or even on full-sized tuyeres, and because of the equipment available for the work, it was decided to carry out the work on scale models of tuyeres. Therefore, in this work, single tuyeres were used and the blast discharged into the atmosphere. The shape of the air stream was determined by means of a Pitot tube suitably supported in the air stream at various positions. The air was furnished by a Roots blower driven by a 10-hp. direct-current motor having field control, and capable of discharging 250 cu. ft. per min. with a pressure on the discharge of 4 in. of mercury. A modern blast furnace with 21-ft. hearth requires about 50,000 cu. ft. per min. of free air at from 16 to 23 Ib. per sq. in. pressure, depending upon the type of burden. This pressure is the total pressure required to force the air through the burden and through the tuyeres. Upon computation the pressure drop through the tuyeres is about 1 to 2 lb. per sq. in. THE work of Merica1 and other investigators indicates that the phenomenon of age-hardening in. alloys of the duralumin type is primarily dependent upon the variation in the solubility of copper with temperature. In addition to copper, however, these alloys contain small amounts of magnesium, silicon, manganese and iron, which may affect the age-hardening either directly or indirectly. The effect of these elements on the solubility of copper and on the manner in which this solubility varies with the temperature is of considerable interest, therefore. The effect of magnesium is of especial interest because apparently it exerts a marked effect on the natural or room-temperature aging of alloys of the type described.2 A series of investigations3 has been in progress in the research laboratories of the Aluminum. In recent years there has been increased miniaturization of electromechanical devices to keep pace with current trends toward smaller electronic components. A major problem facing the designer, however, is the higher stresses encountered by the material as a result of shorter springs. Hence an improvement in the elastic limit, as approximated by the 0.01 pct offset yield strength, would be highly desirable. An increase of 25 pct in the yield strength, for example, will permit a 20 pct reduction in both the length and thickness of a cantilever-type spring while maintaining the same compliance. One technique of improving the yield strength that has received little commercial attention is crystal-lographic texture strengthening.1,2 Texture strengthening is expected to be most beneficial in materials of hcp structure, but considerable gain can also be expected in cubic materials. A wire with a (111) fiber texture, for example, is expected to be 20 pct stronger than randomly oriented material, and 50 pct stronger than wire with a (100) fiber texture.293 For sheet specimens with a {110}(112) texture, characteristic of many heavily rolled fcc alloys, the (111) transverse direction is expected to be the maximum yield strength direction, about 20 pct higher than that in the (112) rolling direction.' In addition, the (111) direction is the direction of maximum modulus of elasticity for most cubic alloys. A large value of the elastic modulus could be desirable in designs where stiffer springs are required. To test the above idea, a 0.090 in. (-2.3 mm) thick commercial grade A (5 pct Sn) phosphor bronze sheet, a widely-used material for relay springs, was rolled from the spring-tempered condition (60.5 pct reduction) to various additional reductions up to a total reduction of 95 pct. Subsequently, additional material was obtained with a total thickness reduction of 97.3 pct Standard tensile specimens were prepared from the sheet material with the tensile axis parallel to and at 90 deg to the rolling direction. Tests were run on an Instron testing machine at a strain rate of about 0.050 min-l. Textures were determined by the use of the reflection pole-figure technique. Data were obtained using nickel-filtered CuKa radiation and with the aid of a Siemens pole figure goniometer. The present status of integrated circuits utilizing. superconductive switching. elements is reviewed with special attention given to fabrication techniques, methods for interconnecting completed circuits, and refrigeration requirements. Cryoelectronics has been largely an "inte- grated-circuit" technology since its conception because the switching speed of superconductive devices is attractive only when these devices are fabricated with thin-film techniques. It is true that cryotron circuits can be constructed from wires of appropriate materials (as indeed was done by Dudley Buck 1 in his early investigations) but these circuits will switch in times characteristic of milliseconds whereas similar circuits fabricated by thin-film methods have potential switching times of nanoseconds. Furthermore, cryo-electronic devices such as the cryotron lend themselves readily to fabrication by thin-film techniques since these components may be made from polycrys-talline thin films and are relatively insensitive to the presence of impurities (as measured by semiconductor standards). Therefore, during the past decade considerable effort has been devoted to developing techniques for batch fabricating circuit arrays containing superconductive switching elements. Technology had developed to the point several years ago that fabrication of cryoelectronic arrays containing up to one hundred devices was rather straightforward. However, larger arrays containing between lo4 and 106 components which are required for commercial development of cryoelectronics still pose very severe yield problems. Thus in a sense cryoelectronics found itself in 1962 at the point semiconductor technology finds itself today; namely, individual devices and small groups of integrated devices could be fabricated with acceptable yield and the outlook for building larger integrated-circuit arrays was bright. Unfortunately, problems associated largely with yield have made fabrication of these larger arrays difficult. Unlike semiconductor technology, cryoelectronics had to solve the problems of large-scale integration before it could become economically attractive. This has proven to be a sizable burden to bear. Since several reviews exist on superconductivity,2 superconductive devices,3 and cryoelectronic technology, no attempt will be made in this paper to summarize these areas. Instead a few specific topics will be dealt with in more detail. First, a brief description is given of selected superconducting switching and storage devices with special attention to several metallurgical techniques which improve the performance of these devices. Second, techniques used to fabricate cryoelectronic devices are described with emphasis on problems affecting yield. Third, techniques for interconnecting a number of cryoelectronic planes are described. And last, refrigeration of cryoelectronic components is discussed briefly since the low operating temperature of superconductive devices is an important consideration in this technology. SUPERCONDUCTING STORAGE AND SWITCHING DEVICES The basic superconductive switching device is the thin-film cryotron. The geometry of this device is attractively simple, since it involves only the intersection of two lines that are electrically insulated from each other. The switching element (gate) and control element (control) of a crossed-film cryotron are arranged as illustrated in Fig. 1. The material for the gate is selected to permit the gate to be switched from the superconducting to the normal (resistive) state by the application of a control current. Tin, which has a critical temperature (T,) of 3.7°K, is commonly used for the gate and the cryotron is operated at a temperature just below T, (for example, 3.5°K). The control material (normally lead, with T, = 7.2°K) is chosen so that the control is never driven normal during circuit operation. To improve cryotron operation, a ground plane, also of lead, is placed under all of the circuitry to act as a diamagnetic shield and improve the current-density uniformity across the width of various thin-film elements. Normally, line widths vary from 0.005 to ^ 0.020 in. and film thicknesses from 300 to 10,000A, although new fabrication techniques make narrower lines feasible. In fabricating cryotrons it is important that the edges of the gate elements be geometrically sharp to avoid undesirable switching characteristics associated with a thinner edge region, Fig. 2. One technique which has been used extensively to form patterns consists of placing a physical mask containing the film pattern between the evaporation source and the substrate and depositing through the mask. Film strips formed in this manner possess a penumbra at the film edges due to shadowing of the evapor-ant under the mask. It is often written that the purpose of any mining operation is to produce efficiently, safely, and profitably, and always to search for more efficient, safer, and more profitable methods. To provide for continual improvement, an attitude that is not only reasonable but also imperative, there is an obvious need for a high standard of competence among the ranks both of supervision and of those being supervised. It naturally follows that, to achieve this standard, planned training in every level of an organization is a definite necessity. There are many factors involved in the need for training, and the scope of a program is influenced by answers to such questions as: "What is the geographic location of the project?" "What are the duties of each job?" "What is the source of the working force and supervision?" "What are the hiring standards for various jobs?" "What is the availability of trained personnel?" "What is the availability of outside training facilities?" The approach in this chapter will be to consider a need for a maximum of training, and it may be applied by the reader to whatever extent is considered necessary in each individual situation. 14.2-1. Administration. It is a basic responsibility of every supervisor at all levels to train those who work for him. However in a very extensive training program, which involves supervisors and the working force, includes both compulsory and voluntary participation, uses outside and in-plant methods, and where the increasing complexity of jobs requires more specialization, the establishment of a training department is definitely war- ranted. This will consist mainly of instructors for related classroom training and preparation of manuals, etc., and the necessary clerical help. A training staff does not relieve the various departments of their responsibility to train, but it does have facilities, experience, and contacts that are inval-

THE diffusion of metal atoms into the crystal lattice of another metal and the assumption of regular positions to form a homogeneous alloy are some of the most fundamental phenomena of structural. metallurgy. The mechanism of this process has been the subject of a great deal of study from many viewpoints, but the picture is still far from complete. It is generally believed that if one metal is to diffuse into another, the first must have some solubility in the second1. This means that the solvent must be able to accommodate the stranger atoms, either on points of its own lattice or in the interstices between, without losing its own crystallographic identity. It is also a general observation that cold-working is a distinct aid in the diffusion process, causing it to take place with greater rapidity at the same temperature or with the same speed at a lower temperature. There is considerable doubt, however, as to the real significance of the deformation in its effect on the diffusion mechanism. Several factors associated with the cold-working. may be responsible for the increased diffusion rate. The plastic deformation causes a distortion of the solvent lattice, which may be an aid in the assimulation of atoms of another kind. There are many references2 in the literature that suggest that some distortion or "loosening" of the lattice is necessary for atomic migration and that diffusion cannot take place in the undis-

In the extreme northeast corner of the State of Washington, on the Canadian border, lies the Metaline mining district. This district is old in history, but young in production. The Metaline district is a zinc-lead area of the replacement type in dolomite and limestone. The ore bodies of the Josephine horizon are in many ways similar to the ore bodies of the famous Tri-State zinc fields. The beds are faulted and folded and have varyng low dips in varying directions, and underlie large areas of the district. Production started in 1927 on a very limited basis. The property is now mining and milling 700 tons per day. The mine is opened by adit tunnels and a vertical shaft. As the ore horizons gained depth, it was necessary to sink inclines to follow the ore horizon (see Fig 1). From 1927 to date, approximately 600,000 ft of diamond drill was put down This work indicated that sufficient tonnage existed to justify a redesigning of the whole operation, surface and under- ground. The use of water-cooled breast-jackets or cinder-tap blocks is a great convenience in lead-smelting, even when siliceous slags are made. If the charges are at all basic it is almost imperative. Jackets of riveted wrought-iron or steel are expensive; those of cast-iron are liable to crack; those of bronze are costly and not durable, being easily penetrated by tapping-bars or destroyed by streams of matte impinging against them. To overcome these objections I introduced at the Hanauer works, in April, 1886, castjackets of steel, which have been in constant use since that time and are to-day as good as new. These jackets were made for us by the Chester Steel Castings Company, of Chester, Pa., at a cost of ten cents a pound at the works of that company. The metal is 5/8-inch thick, and the jackets were cored and tapped for l1/2-inch bushings, affording two large holes for the removal of dirt and incrustations. The same holes are used for feed- and discharge-water through 3/4-inch pipe. I hope the successful introduction here of cast-jackets of steel will lead to their more extended use in all branches of metallurgy where water-cooled surfaces are severely taxed, and where the size and thickness of the castings are not unfavorable to the production of a sound article, impervious to water and of high tensile strength.

Much of the metal heretofore sold in the markets as pure aluminum has been contaminated with from 4 to 10 per cent. of impurities. IN November 1939, on behalf of the Harbison-Walker Refractories Co., the author undertook the study of the problem of utilizing the dolomite of northwestern Ohio for the manufacture of calcined magnesia suitable for use in refractories. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the unfailing assistance and encouragement throughout this work from the executive and technical staff of Harbison-Walker Refractories Company. The dolomite of the Niagara formation that is exposed or near the surface of a wide area in northwestern Ohio1 constitutes a vast supply of almost pure dolomite. It offers a virtually unlimited supply of cheap raw material of uniform dependable analysis for the manufacture of magnesia. A typical analysis of dolomite from the vicinity of Luckey, Ohio, follows: [ ] Brines containing magnesium chloride or sea water can be reacted with calcined dolomite to produce magnesia.2,3 In such reactions the MgCl2 of the brine supplies some of the magnesia and the amount of dolomite required is thereby reduced by an equivalent amount, but brines of commercial importance containing magnesium chloride are some distance away from the purest grades of the dolomite of northwestern Ohio. It was decided therefore to concentrate upon the development of a suitable process for separating the lime and magnesia of dolomite, depend¬ing upon the dolomite itself as the sole source of magnesia. This would make it possible to place a plant at the dolomite quarry, thus eliminating the cost of transporting the stone and also rendering the calcined magnesia available at a most convenient production point, considering the cost of delivery throughout the steel industry. The selection of a process depending solely upon the dolomite as a source of magnesia also necessarily entails production of the lime content of the dolomite as a by-product. It was recognized that if such a lime by-product could be produced in a suitable form, a plant location in northwestern Ohio would also be advantageous for marketing the lime. The problem, therefore, was the discovery and development of a low-cost process for separating the magnesia and lime of the dolomite of northwestern Ohio and producing each in a form relatively free from the other, and meeting the respective requirements of established markets. THE Climax molybdenite deposit in Lake County 100 miles southwest of Denver is located in the central part of the mineral belt extending north-easterly across the state. Principal geographic features and geology are shown on Fig. 1. The first period of molybdenite mining, which began in 1918, ended in April 1919 because of limited demand and a price drop to about 724 per lb. During this time the ore came from the Leal level and surface outcrops at a higher elevation. Rate of mining was 250 tpd and several million tons of ore averaging 0.7 pct molybdenite were developed. Since April 1924, when the second period* began, Climax Molybdenum Co. has been the only operating company. Production in 1924 was 400 tpd and finding ore was a continual problem. When the White tunnel was extended, however, further ore was encountered. The orebody was thought to be tabular until 1926, when B. S. Butler recognized the relation of the developed ore on the Leal and White levels to a central area of fine-grained hydrothermal quartz, and by 1929 diamond drilling had blocked out indicated ore reserves in excess of 100 million tons.

A description is given of grinding practice on the Rand and of experiments made to improve that practice. The paper includes a description of the experimental plants and methods and the results obtained. THE first tube-mill on the Rand was put into operation in May, 1904, at the Glen Deep Mine. From that time onwards, tube-mills were added to various plants, although little was known regarding the capacity of a given tube-mill when working on banket ore. Within a few years, however, the so-called standard size (length of shell 22 ft. 0 in. diameter 5 ft. 6 in.) was generally used until the last year or two. Practically the only exceptions were about 30 tube-mills having a length of 16 ft. and a diameter of 6 ft., and a few open-end mills of the roller-supported type. Most of the information obtained during the last 15 years has been obtained with mills of the standard dimensions. The adoption of the tube-mill as an accessory to the stamp mill was rapid; and where 3 tube-mills were working on the Rand at the end of 1904, 244 were in use seven years later.1 By 1910, good practice provided 1 tube-mill for 20 stamps of 2000-lb. falling weight. The horsepower of the motors driving the tube-mills had increased from. 80 to 100 and then to 125 at this date. Broadly speaking, current practice at that date aimed at a final product of which 60 per cent. was suitable for sand treatment and 40 per cent. for slime. The sand grading was +60 mesh, 6 per cent.; +90 mesh, 25 per cent.; -90 mesh, 69 per cent.; and the slime grading -200 mesh, 2 per cent.; -200 mesh, 98 per cent.

The process of solvent extraction.(or liquid-liquid extraction) is a separation technique involving mass transfer across a phase boundary, and as such is not limited to metal transfer from an aqueous to a non-aqueous phase, or, vice versa. We shall here, however, restrict ourselves to the application of the solvent extraction technique to metallurgical processing. Basically, the process of solvent extraction as applied to metals separation and purification requires only that a specific metal be transferred from, initially, an aqueous phase to a non-aqueous phase, followed by a reversal of this transfer. The stabilization of the R, a-Mn, and 0-Mn phases have been studied in the Mn-Ti-Fe and Mn-Ti-Co systems. Iron and cobalt both appear to stabilize the (Mn-Ti) R phase to almost the sarne extent. The R-phase region was found to extend from the lowest e/a to slightly beyond the maximunz e/a limit known for this phase. But, while iron appears to stabilize the a-Mn phase, cobalt tends to stabilize the p-Mn phase. In the two systems manganese appears to get replaced by iron and cobalt in each of the mentioned phases. The instability of the a-Mn phase in the Mn-Ti-Co system and the /3 -Mn phase in the Mn-Ti-Fe system cannot be explained on the basis of adverse size effects because atomic diameters for both iron and cobalt (C.N. 12 at. diam) are ziery similnr and not much different from manganese which they replace. Qualitatively, the reason for the stability of the a-Mn and the p-Mn phases can be traced to the more favorable e/a ratio prevailing in the respective systems and to a competing tendency between the two phases. In transition metal alloy systems the o, p,P, R, a- Mn,' and p-Mn2 phases have been claimed as electron compounds. A large volume of work has been done to establish the criterion for the formation of the o phase but until very recently practically no systematic work was done on the a-Mn and the /3-Mn phases. A recent investigation on the P-Mn phase3 indicates the e/a criterion for p-Mn phase stabilization. Since the R phase was first known to appear only in certain ternary systems1 no detailed work was then possible for this phase. The R phase has been recently discovered as a binary intermetallic compound in the Mn-Ti~ and Mn-si~-' binary systems. The existence of binary R phases opens up the possibilities of studying the effect of alloying elements on the stabilization of the R phase. Of the two binary systems possessing an R phase, the Mn-Ti system appears to be more interesting because at a suitable high temperature it is possible to find the three electron compounds, the a-Mn, p-Mn, and R phases, side by side and it is possible to study the effect of a third transition element on these three electron compounds. For the present investigation iron and cobalt, so called B elements for the formation of electron compounds, have been used as the third element to study the stabilization of the a-Mn, P-Mn, and R phases. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were prepared by using 99.9 pct pure electrolytic Fe and Mn, 99.5 pct Co, and crystal bar titanium, supplied by Semi Elements Inc., New York and Gallard Schelsinger Mfg. Co., New York. Weighed amounts of the components were melted in recrystal-lized alumina crucibles in an inert atmosphere (argon) high-frequency induction melting unit. Titanium was made into fine chips for easy dissolution and a special charging procedure was adopted to avoid contacts of titanium chips with the alumina crucibles. Up to 20 at. pct Ti, the maximum titanium content in the investigated alloys, there was no visible sign of reaction of titanium with the alumina crucibles. With a careful control of melting time and temperature the losses were minimized and were always found to be below 0.1 pct. Because of such small and almost constant weight losses, the alloys were not finally analyzed. The alloys were wrapped in molybdenum foil and annealed in evacuated and sealed silica capsules at 1000" * 2°C for 72 hr and subsequently quenched in cold tap water. Annealed samples were examined metallographically and by X-ray diffraction. For all high manganese alloys oxalic acid solutions of various concentrations and 1.0 pct HN03 solution were found suitable as etching reagents. Best contrast between the a-Mn and the R phases could be obtained by using freshly prepared 60 pct glycerine + 20 pct HN03 + 20 pct HF solution. For high iron and cobalt containing alloys, especially for alloys containing the a-Fe, y-Fe, and P-Co phases, 15 cc HNOJ + 60 cc HC1 + 15 cc acetic acid + 15 cc water solution was found to be the best etching reagent. All X-ray diffraction work was carried out (using specimens prepared from annealed powders) with a 114.6 mm diam Debye-Scherrer camera using unfiltered FeK radiation at 25 kv and 10 ma. All calculations for X-ray diffraction work were carried out using an IBM 7044 digital computer RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The two ternary systems, MnTiFe and MnTiCo, were investigated near the manganese rich end, Figs. 1 and 2, and show some common features. In both alloy systems large extensions of narrow R phase regions occur at almost constant titanium contents. At titanium contents higher than that of the single phase R-phase alloys, the same unidentified X phase was found in both ternary systems. The extensions of the X phase close to the Mn-Ti binary indicate that this phase could be the TiMns phase. Too few X phase diffraction lines were present in the diffraction patterns to make positive identification of the X phase. In contrast to this similarity the two systems show opposite behavior in the extensions of the a-Mn and 8-Mn phase regions; while iron tends to stabilize the a-Mn phase, cobalt

M., to Los Angeles. To shape justly even an outline of the brilliant career and uniquely charming personality of Mr; Gemmell is well-nigh impossible, and any effort so to do can but demonstrate the inadequacy of language to sound the depths of soul-stirring sentiments. To touch upon his more important work, and afford even a limited conception of his general worth and character, is all I can hope to do.
