Professor Somasundaran has given an excellent presentation of the numerous problems which remain to be solved before the selective aggregation of fine particulates is likely to see broad commercial application in the beneficiation of mineral fines. However it is useful, I think, to reiterate some of the major problem areas. The over-riding factor which has limited the development of selective aggregation techniques is that processes such as coagulation and flocculation tend to be inherently non-selective. Conditions which favor the aggregation of one kind of fine particles usually favor the aggregation of all kinds of particles. As Professor Somasundaran has pointed out, the state of aggregation of a fine-particle dispersion is primarily determined by the forces of interaction between the individual particles. In most systems, the dominant forces are: 1. van der Waals - London Dispersion forces between the particles themselves 2. electrical double layer forces 3. steric forces between adsorbed layers on the surfaces of the particles. The London Dispersion forces between like particles are always attractive, but for dissimilar particles dispersed in a fluid medium can, in some cases, lead to a net repulsion. Electrical double layer forces always lead to repulsion between like particles but can, again, cause either attraction or repulsion for dissimilar materials. The steric forces, which are by far the least understood of the three types, can also lead to attraction or repulsion depending on condi-

In an article on magnesium and its alloys, Gann and Winston! stated that manganese has a limited solubility in the liquid state. W. Schmidt2 showed a diagram according to Joseph Ruhrmann indicating that the solubility of manganese in liquid magnesium falls from about 2.65 per cent at 790°C. to about 0.5 per cent at 675°C. The curve was extrapolated to show zero solubility at the melting point of pure magnesium (Fig. I). This work suggested that at the lowest manganese contents it was not possible to detect either a eutectic or the formation of a solid solution, so that manganese was stated to be present in the structure as large individual crystals. Two years after the presentation of, these results, Gann3 brought evidence to show that some manganese is capable of dissolving to form a solid solution, any excess of manganese present then assuming chiefly the form of small blue-gray particles scattered throughout the primary magnesium crystals, occasionally in clusters but seldom at the boundaries. He presented micrographs of cast alloys containing 0.1, 0.4 and 1.0 per cent manganese that show a small amount of coring around the individual particles due to solid solution, and indicate that the location of the manganese particles is closely associated with the original dendritic structure of the primary crystallization. He also pointed out that the amount of manganese that can be dissolved in magnesium depends on the amount of other alloying elements present, the effect of the second alloying element being to decrease the amount of manganese retained in the alloy. E. Schmid and G. Siebe14 have determined the solid solubility of manganese and its variation with temperature by means of precision X-ray diffraction measurements. They found that the solubility is 3.4 per cent at 645°C. and decreases to practically zero at 200°C. It is apparent that the X-ray diffraction measurements of Schmid and Siebel are not in agreement with the results of Ruhrmann as presented by Schmidt. This disagreement, and also the lack of data on magnesium-aluminum-manganese and magnesium-zinc-manganese systems, led the author to the present investigation, to determine accurately the liquid solubility of manganese and its variation with temperature. Experimental Method The experimental method for making solubility determinations consists of saturating the molten magnesium or the alloys with manganese at various temperatures and analyzing the dip samples taken from these melts. Melting is carried out in a cylindrical steel pot heated by an electric resistance furnace. The pot had a metallic outside coating to protect the steel against oxidation, and a graphite inside lining to prevent the contamination of the melt by prolonged contact with iron. The inside diameter of the pot was 4 in. and the depth 12 inches.

Il.lechanica1 twins have been observed in brigsten single crystals of a variety of axial orientations defornzed at room temperature in tension or bending. The twins formed near the final fracture and were up to 3 p thick. The twinning plane was always of the type (113). Twinning at room ternperature occurred only after considerable prior slip. Twins usually preceded fracture and nucleated cracks. The crack surfaces often alternated between a (001) plane and the twin interfaces. Secondary twins could also nucleate from cracks. In the absence of twinning tensile samples failed by shear; twinned samples failed by cleavage. On the assumption that observed sudden load drops in the stress-strain curves are associated with twinning, a critical resolved stress for twinning of 60, 000 to 65, 000 psi was calculated. MeCHANICAL twinning has been observed in iron and iron alloys at low temperature by a number of investigators.'-7 Similarly, for high-purity tungsten, twinning has been reported for deformation temperatures below 211°K.8-10 In W-Re and Mo-Re alloys, 20 pct Re was determined as the lower limit for twin formation at room temperature." Since the twins are generally very narrow, they are usually identified only by etching techniques. The expected (112) habit plane has always been confirmed by angular analysis of the surface traces. Recently, however, a complete identification by X-ray analysis has been performed on twins in a Mo-35 pct Re alloy.12 During an investigation of the deformation charac- teristics of tungsten single crystals, twins were revealed in tensile and bend samples deformed at room temperature. This paper deals with the conditions for such twinning and the relation of twinning to fracture. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Tungsten single crystals, 1/8 in. in diam, of a variety of axial orientations were grown from un-doped material by four-pass electron-beam zone melting. A representative analysis is given in the following table: From these crqstals, tensile samples with 1 in. gage lengths were made by surface grinding, leaving shoulders for gripping. The diameter after grinding was 0.082 in. The distorted surface layer was then removed by ele1:trolytic polishing which reduced the diameter of the gage length to 0.080 in. Tensile tests were carried out at room temperature in an Instron machine under two different sets of conditions: a) Rigid mounting; strain rate 0.02 in. per in. per min. b) Gimbal mounting; strain rate 0.002 in. per in. per min up to a total strain of approximately 0.2 pct, then 0.01 in. per in. per min to fracture. VARIOUS rationalizations of preferred orientations in cold worked polycrystalline metals have been based on the operation of at least two,1 three,2 five,4 an indefinite number,5 and all,6 slip systems of the type occurring in single crystals. Pickus and Mathewson3 suggested that the cold rolling texture in face-centered cubic metals could be rationalized on the basis of two or more operating slip directions symmetrically disposed about the direction of flow in such a manner that the resolved shear stress factor is equal for all operating slip systems and lattice rotations cancel each other. The importance of the direction of flow, † the necessity for the operation of slip systems capable of producing the required, changes in external dimensions, the maintenance of a common surface between adjacent grains and a symmetrical arrangement of the operating slip systems in order to produce an end orientation which is stable under additional deformation lead to the following rationalization of textures based on the type of slip systems operative in single crystals. The rationalization is intended to explain why certain orientations are suitable for deformational flow without a change in orientation and thus are stable end orientations or ideal texture orientations. It does not attempt to explain how the grains of a randomly oriented polycrystalline aggregate will reach this orientation. The rationalization is based on the following four postulates: I. The ideal textures for polycrystalline aggregates are the result of reorientations of individual crystals toward the same stable end orientation at which no further reorientation will occur even during additional deformation. Since, in simple slip, - the relative orientations of the stress axis and the active slip system determine the change in orientation during slip, it is considered that the orientation of the stress axis with respect to the ideal texture determines what slip systems must be active to retain the stable end orientation. Therefore the stable end orientation should be a symmetrical one around the stress axis with respect to the active slip systems such that lattice rotations resulting from slip will cancel each other and prevent a resultant change in orientation. (Rotational symmetry only-not translation, inversion, nor others-is considered here.) Thus a metal under a pure stress should develop a texture consisting of one or more of the crystallographically symmetrical directions, <100>, <110> or <111> for cubic metals or <0001>, <1010> or <1120> for hexagonal dose-packed metals, parallel to the stress axis. 2. THE free-swelling index, a numerical value for the free-swelling properties of coal, is being used to an increasing extent in specifying coal for burning in various types of equipment. The empirical standard ASTM method for determining this index uses, as a source of heat, a gas burner which requires frequent calibration because gas pressures are not constant, relatively small changes in gas pressure resulting in rather wide variations in the temperature attained in a crucible and thus in the resultant size of the coke button. Furthermore, the quartz crucibles specified for the test are not standard equipment, and relatively small variations in dimension and wall thickness from those specified often result in rather wide variations in the resultant size of the button. A method of analysis to be satisfactory not only for a scientific laboratory but also for use in industrial control laboratories under varying conditions should employ equipment which is rugged, easily calibrated, and readily replaceable by standard materials. Gas is not universally available as is electricity, and it is generally easier to calibrate and control a simple electric furnace or heater than a gas burner, the voltage not usually fluctuating to the degree that gas pressure does. Quartz crucibles are fragile, and the size specified in the test is not normally used for any other purpose in the laboratory. Although more expensive, the 15-cc platinum crucible, available in all laboratories where volatile matter in coal is determined by the standard ASTM method, is sturdy and standard and easily replaced. Because of these considerations, a modification of the standard method has been developed which employs a standard laboratory 350-w cone heater and standard 15-cc platinum crucibles. The results of numerous tests conducted with such apparatus show conclusively that the free-swelling index values as judged by the buttons produced with this equipment are exactly the same as those obtained by the standard gas burner method. Thus it is suggested that this electric cone heater method employing standard 15-cc platinum crucibles be considered as an alternative to the ASTM method, Designation: D720-46. The free-swelling index of coal is determined by means of the ASTM method, D720-46. This method, which is an adaptation of the crucible swelling test for coal of the British Standards Institution, consists of heating 1 g of coal in a special covered quartz crucible in a regulated gas flame for a period of not less than 2.5 min in which time the temperature of the inner surface of the bottom of the crucible reaches a temperature of 82025°C. The residual coke button is then compared in size and shape with a series of standard profiles shown in Fig. 1 and designated by number from 1 to 9 in increasing order of size. As the method is empirical, it requires rigid standardization of the apparatus and repeated calibration of the gas burner. The dimensions of the low form quartz crucible recommended must be rigidly adhered to as small variations in diameter or wall thickness result in variations in the rate of heat transmission and thus in the resultant size and shape of the coke button. correlation of waters and identification of mixtures of two and three waters is important in secondary recovery evaluation studies and studies involving underground movement of waters. The importance of such studies suggests the need for a method to correlate a great number of water analyses to accurately identify and improve the understanding of mixtures of waters. Geochemical analyses of waters furnish a quantitative measure of each of the ions present in a water. Table L shows a portion of the data on many oilfield water analysis report forms in use today. Under "parts per million" are listed the quantitative amounts of each ion in milligrams per liter. Following the work of Stabler&apos; and Palmer", some laboratories have reported additional data to indicate the reaction capacity, or reacting value of each ion. Table I lists data under two subheads for the "reacting value". Under the first subhead, the reacting value is reported in gram equivalents per million, hereinafter called equivalents per million. This value is determined by multiplying milligrams per liter of the ion by a factor equal to the reciprocal of the equivalent weight of the ion. Under the second subhead (per cent) is listed the percentage of each ion based on the total equivalents per million. Sodium is not usually an analyzed value in routine analyses, but is determined by the difference between total negative equivalent per million values and the sum of all of positive ion values for which analyses were made. This difference is reported as sodium, hereafter labelled "sodium". On this basis, the subtotals of the equivalent per million and per cent reacting values of the positive and negative ions are equal. CORRELATION OF WATER ANALYSES DATA Previously reported methods for correlating oilfield waters have used part of the data in Table 1, and can be classified into two categories. Correlation by Chemical Character Correlation methods using the chemical character of waters, as represented by the per cent reacting values of the ionic constituents, have been used by Palmer2 and Tickell. These methods have the limitation of neglecting the ionic concentration of the waters. This limitation can be serious in areas where waters have the same chemical character, but differ in concentration. Correlation by Concentration of the Ionic Constituents The Reistle&apos; and the Stiff methods use the ionic concentration in parts per million and equivalents per million. These methods are effective in differentiating waters of similar chemical character and varying concentration, as in the highly saline waters of the Mid-Continent area. These methods have the disadvantage that they correlate waters by comparing many graphs of individual water analyses to determine the similarity to, or the variance from "type" waters. PROPOSED METHOD OF CORRELATING WATER ANALYSES DATA Correlation graphs presented in Fig. 1 represent water analyses data as points to facilitate the correlation of waters. Professor Jenney has performed a notable service in presenting this summary of the steadily increasing body of observation on the presence of carbon in rocks of all kinds and its probable influence upon ore-deposition, and in formulating a mode of comparing directly the relative resistance of minerals to oxidation, as well as their reducing-power, and the protective action which minerals having higher reducing-powers exert in preventing the oxidation of associated minerals which possess relatively lower affinities for oxygen. I have had an opportunity of observing a vein which falls within the scope of his interesting discussion. The vein at Ku Shau Tzu, Mongolia, lies directly across a contact of limestone and overlying bituminous shales. Probably it occupies a compression-fissure. The shale has been reduced to such a condition of&apos; non-coherence that much of it can be crushed in the hand, producing a handful of angular fragments resembling beech-nuts in shape and size. In the limestone the metals are principally in argentiferous galena with some pyrite and blende; but the latter two are very subordinate in quantity to the galena. In short, it is an every-day lead-vein in limestone, with siliceous limestone gangue. It is one of those veins in which the ore is not continuous, but consists of a band in the country-rock in which seams of lead sulphide begin at one wall and cross in a bent form, increasing in thickness, to the other wall, where they thin out and end. This may indicate torsional stress, but the shape of the lenses points to some other action. They often ran nearly parallel to the hanging-wall for a considerable distance and crossed the vein on a moderate angle, but turned sharply along the vein on approaching the foot-wall. The intermediate rock contains nodules, bunches and specks of ore, and the lenses vary exceedingly in size, shape and position in the vein.

U.S. environmentalists have tended to oppose all new energy developments. Their efforts may be counterproductive because opposition to, say, offshore oil directly leads to the continued use of other energy sources that may have a higher social cost. Rather than attempting to eliminate all pollution from energy production, which would be prohibitively expensive, one should minimize the social cost of energy production for the given demand. Linear programming is used to rank various oils (California State and O.C.S., Gulf of Alaska, Prudhoe Bay, Athabasca tar sands, oil shale and certain foreign crudes) in terms of their social desirability. The objective is to minimize the cost of supplying the California market, subject to resource, sulphur and oil spill constraints. Social desirability is indicated by the inclusion of the oil in the optimal solution and the size of the associated shadow price. the larger the shadow price, the greater the benefits of increased production. The more negative, the greater the cost associated with forcing consumption of that fuel. The environmental shadow prices indicate the size of the trade-off between a particular environmental standard and minimum cost. The trade-offs can be surprisingly large. any reasonable spill standard can be achieved by changing the development pattern. Generally, the further offshore, the smaller is the environmental degradation, but the more expensive is the oil. Foreign oils can be economically and environmentally inferior to domestic oils. Crude from the California O.C.S., San Joaquin Valley end Prudhoe Bay appears a valuable resource, while the Gulf of Alaska, synthetic and foreign crudes appear marginal to submarginal.

Application of research findings to the old art of leaching copper from copper-bearing mine waste has resulted in a significant contribution of copper to over-all copper production. For example, at the completion of the current expansion program at the Kennecott properties in the United States, copper produced from waste dump leaching will amount to about 25% of the total production, whereas formerly only 2% was derived from this source. This planned expansion of copper leaching focused attention on the problem of developing more efficient methods for the recovery of copper from greatly increased volumes of copper-bearing so1utions.l Detailed investigations made in laboratory pilot plant and plant tests for the recovery of copper from copper-bearing solutions have included electrowinning, solvent extraction, ion exchange and cementation with iron in launders, precipitation drums, activated launders, and precipitation cones. The results of these investigations have led to the development of a precipitation cone-type recovery system having advantages over older methods.

Single crystal rods of cadmium collapse under uniaxial compression into peculiar kinks if the (0001) glide plane is nearly parallel to the axis of compression. In his report first describing this behavior, Orowan1 proposed that these "kink bands" do not develop entirely by ordinary gliding and twinning but by a special mechanism in which glide lamellae of uniform thickness snap abruptly to a tilted position that permits lattice continuity across the glide planes. He concluded that a portion of each boundary of a kink band consists of a plane (non-crystallo-graphic) which bisects the angle between the glide planes on the two sides of it, and along which the bending and the dislocations are concentrated. The data presented by Orowan seemed to us to be insuffcient to conclude that a wholly new mechanism of deformation was responsible for the kinks. Therefore, we have investigated zinc, which is hexagonal close-packed and has an axial ratio near to cadmium, to see whether similar bands are produced, and whether the ordinary mechanisms of glide, bend-gliding, twinning, and the formation of deformation bands can account for its mode of deformation. We find that kinks form profusely in zinc as shown in Fig 1. The structure of these kinks, reported below, seems to require no new mechanism for their explanation, but indicates that kink bands are a special form of deformation bands and develop gradually, solely from basal glide. A theory covering the formation and structure of the bands is presented in detail because it is seldom possible to study deformation bands under such simple conditions, yet many principles applying to these kinks should also apply to deformation bands in general. Experimental Procedures Single crystal rods of 2-3 mm diam and 10-15 cm length were grown by the Brideman technique from swaged wire of Horsehead Special zinc in un-coated pyrex tubes. Orientations of the rods were determined with an optical goniometer after cleaving the rods at liquid air temperature. Crystals of desired orientations were then selected and used as "seeds" to grow additional crystals approximately 4 ft in length from which all specimens were cut. The wires were compressed in two ways: in a simple hydraulic handpress —a "soft" machine—and in a Riehle hydraulic testing machine modified to produce very "stiff" action by the simple expedient of inserting lengths of steel bars at the sides of the zinc crystals between the compression plates. For metallographic examination, the specimens were mounted in sealing wax. Front Range, Colorado: The majority of the rocks comprising the Front Range of Colorado are pre-Cambrian schists, gneisses, and intrusives which have been elevated to form part of the Southern Rocky Mountain physiographic province. The region is noted mainly for its production of gold and silver, but ores of tungsten, fluorspar, uranium, copper, and iron have been worked. Geological literature1-&apos; describes pitchblende and other radioactive minerals occurring at Jamestown, Boulder County; Central City, Gilpin County; and Lawson, Clear Creek County (fig. 1). Silver Deposits at Caribou Hill: The historic silver deposits of Caribou Hill, located approximately half way between Jamestown and Central City, and 35 miles in a straight line northwest of Denver, appeared particularly intriguing as an area to prospect for uranium for the following reasons: here exists an isolated group of high-grade silver veins in the center of a mining district containing occurrences of uranium, and, in two of the well-known uranium deposits of the world, those at Great Bear Lake, Canada, and Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, uranium is associated with silver in similar fissure veins. An exploration program, conducted in the spring of 1945, directed special attention to Caribou Hill and was rewarded with the discovery of heavy, canary-yellow stained specimens of&apos;pitchblende. The veins are confined to shear zones cutting a north-south, elongated quartz-monzonite stock of Tertiary (?) age lying in the axis of a major anticline of the Idaho Springs biotite schist, the oldest pre-Cambrian formation in the district. The stock is one and three-quarter miles long by more than a mile wide, and Caribou Hill is approximately at its center. The ore zones vary in width from a few inches to 15 ft, and one structure has been traced for a length of over 4000 ft. The ore minerals are galena, sphalerite, ruby silver, native silver, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and pitchblende. They occur most common-

This project originated in a practical problem—we needed five tracers that could be used together to locate flow paths in a pilot flood. While tracers for subsurface liquids have been used since the turn of the century,1-15 none of those reported in the literature appeared to be either consistent or quantitative enough for our purposes. Most were used in field systems without controlled experiments to determine the accuracy and precision of analysis, and many were tracers that could not be used collectively. The ideal tracer, of course, would follow the fiuid of interest exactly, traveling at the same velocity as the fluid front. But the ideal is impractical to attain because adsorption-desorption effects cause the tracer to lag behind the front; these effects, plus diffusion-dispersion effects, cause the tracer front to spread more than the fluid front. Thus, our objective was not to locate a tracer that would be ideal for all circumstances but rather, to find one that would approximately follow the fluid, or one that under controlled conditions could be corrected to calculate the movement of the fluid front. We considered tracers satisfactory—(1) if they were easy to analyze; (2) if their breakthrough-elution curves were not too different from those for the chloride ion, a tracer believed to follow the fluid front closely; and (3) if we could calculate from the curves a material balance, at 1.25-PV (pore volume) injected, within 5 per cent of that calculated from chloride curves. Of a possible 35 materials, we selected 13 tracers that could be quickly and easily identified and whose analysis was claimed to be accurate within 5 per cent. Only one of these, tritiated water, was a radioactive tracer. Radioactive tracers are easy to detect even in small quantities, but they require special handling and special equipment. Also, those that can be used together are limited because special equipment is required to separate emissions from the various tracers. Two of the original 13 tracers were eliminated in static tests to determine how accurately and precisely they could be analyzed, and to check on gross adsorption. The remaining 11 were flowed through a 9-ft linear sandstone model, and breakthrough-elution curves were obtained. Finally, three tracers were field-tested as breakthrough tracers. These tests are described in the following sections. The 13 tracers considered in these experiments were EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid), fluo-rescein, picric acid, salicylic acid and ammonium, boron (as borate), bromide, dichromate, iodide, nitrate and thiocyanate ions, plus chloride ion and tritiated water. All but the chloride ion and tritiated water were subjected to static sand tests to eliminate the tracers that could not be analyzed quickly and accurately and to eliminate those that showed excessive adsorption. All but two of the tracers, EDTA and salicylic acid, qualified for flow tests on this basis. The procedures used in the static tests (see Appendix A for analytical details) were as follows. Each tracer (in the amount shown in Table 1) was dissolved in 1,000 ml of water. Then, 800 ml of this solution was added to 500 gm of sand, and the remaining 200 ml was reserved as a control standard. The sand-tracer mixture was agitated once a day over a 10-week period, and during this period we analyzed five duplicate samples from this mixture, along with five duplicate samples from the control solution. From the control-sample analyses, we constructed a control chart on which the sand-tracer analysis results were plotted. The control chart, and its use to determine accuracy and precision of analytical results, as well as the amount of adsorption, is described in Appendix B. The results of the static tests are summarized in Table 1, which lists the concentration c (concentration at time t) divided by c, (initial concentration). If there was no adsorption, c/c, = 1. The acceptable deviation from this value varied from tracer to tracer, depending upon the limits of analytical precision established for the different tracers. The best results were obtained with boron, bromide and dichromate, with all values falling within limits of accuracy and precision. THE metallurgical polarization microscope has been utilized in several researches in the last few years, thus attaining a fair degree of prominence, but little has been written in a manner suitable to a metallurgist concerning the theory of this instrument. In this investigation the theory was carefully studied, and the results are presented here in a detailed manner, yet as simply as possible. The theory - is discussed with particular reference to the three chief functions of the instrument: (1) determination of anisotropy; (2) effect of strain; and (3) identification of inclusions. Each of these is investigated experimentally, with especial attention to the mechanism of producing any effect. Where possible, the discussion is supplemented by photomicrographs. The instrument used had numerous defects as a polarization microscope; these and their remedies are discussed. In the microscopic study of transparent mineral sections (chalcography) the use of polarized light has aided tremendously in the identification of a mineral. The determination of strain in transparent substances (photoelasticity) by the use of polarized light has lately become a commercial process, used in testing finished glass articles. The success of the use of polarized light with opaque materials has not been so great. The magnitude of the effects obtained is much less than that of the corresponding effects with transparent materials, and the mechanical difficulties are much greater. EVIDENCE has been accumulating in recent years, in part from the work of the Coal Research Laboratory, that coals belong to a family of natural polymers and that even in complex reactions the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. This point of view leads to the expectation that if a series of coals were subjected to a closely controlled set of experimental conditions the results obtained should be related to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. The data accumulated over the past 10 years by the Bureau of Mines in its "Survey of Coke-, Gas-, and By-Product-Making Properties of American Coals," in what has come to be recognized as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) carbonization assay test,1-12 offer an unusual opportunity to check this conclusion. The present paper reports an analysis of the data on the first go coals and coal blends-including coals numbered I to 55b, inclusive -which have been carbonized according to a standard procedure at intervals of 100°C. from 500° to 1100° in either or both 13 or I8-in. cylindrical retorts." In Table I are given the name of the seam from which the sample was obtained, the analytical data used, and the reference to the original publication of the Bureau of Mines. The coals range in fixed carbon from 46.2 to 79.0 per cent, in volatile matter from 15.4 to 41.3 per cent, in ash; from 2.1 to 15.9 per cent, in moisture from o.8 to 19.7 per cent, and in total sulphur from 0.40 to 4.44 per cent; therefore the entire gamut of bituminous coals is represented. The petrographic nature of the individual coals is not considered in the following analysis, although both "normal" bright coals and splint coals are included in the samples studied. For information on the petrography of the coals and for further information characterizing the coals the original papers should be consulted. Although the coals that are included extend over the whole range of bituminous coals, they do not cover this range entirely adequately. In particular, only 13 of the go coals have moisture contents greater than 3 per cent. This concentration at low moisture values means that the effect of moisture, which is an important factor, cannot be determined with as much certainty as would be desirable. All the coals were not tested at every temperature and in both retort sizes. Only the first 30 coals were tested at 1100°, and only about 50 at the other temperatures, except at 900°, where nearly all of them were included. In the accompanying tables the actual number of observations entering into each correlation is given. In this study equations are given for calculating analyses, yields, and properties of coke and by-products from the coal analyses. To decide whether these equations are satisfactory it is necessary to know the accuracy with which these quantities were measured in the assay tests.

T HE appointment of Herbert Hoover to the portfolio of Commerce in the President&apos;s Cabinet is to engineers the fulfillment of a long deferred hope to have an engineer in high political office and is a matter of congratulation to us for three reasons; because he is a mining engineer who represents the highest type of idealistic engineering effort; because he is a past president of the Institute; and because he has probably a broader grasp of world problems than any other living engineer. Frank A. Vanderlip in the preface to his book "What Happened to Europe" tells of the many interviews he had with the most prominent men in Europe which were made possible for him by his eminence as a banker and by the courtesy of the American ambassadors. He cites by name such well known figures as Austin Chamberlain, Sir Auckland Geddes, Monsieur Delacroix, Monsieur Briand, Mr. Padkrewski, Mr. Venizelos, Colonel House, General Pershing, Mr. Baruch, and many others and says :

In an earlier paper the permeability character of Mo-0.5 pct Ti to hydrogen was described.&apos; It was shown that this alloy is a more effective barrier to the passage of hydrogen than previously studied systems, i.e., copper,2 nickel,3 and several stainless steels.4 The permeability of Hastelloy B to hydrogen was investigated as a material having promising high-temperature structural properties which might have a low permeability to hydrogen. The general theory of permeation has been previously discussed,&apos; and here only a summary of the more important results are given. It is found that except for very thin membranes, at low temperature, permeation of a gas through a metal barrier is determined by the rate of diffusion of the gas through the crystal lattice of the specimen, and that for hydrogen and the common diatomic gases, this passage involves dissociated particles as the diffusing species. The rate of permeation for hydrogen is therefore proportional to the square root of the pressure. It has also been found that the rate of permeation is inversely proportional to the thickness of the barrier. The apparatus used in this investigation was fundamentally the same as that employed in previous studies,&apos; except that several simplifications result in the case of Hastelloy, since oxidation at the temperatures investigated is no longer a problem and welding of the specimen is relatively easy. A survey of literature published in the U.S. on grouting indicates that most such work has been done to stop water flow in mines and for stabilizing foundations of various man-made structures. Apparently San Manuel is one of the first mines in this country to use grout extensively underground for the strengthening and stabilizing of ground about drifts, shafts, and stations.
