The effectiue distriblltion coefficient has been Measured in a series of vertical, normal freezing experirtzents with large current densities passing through the solid-liquid interface. The results indicate that the effect of the current on solute redistribution is due to electvotransport in the liquid. The high currents produced extensive mixing in the liquid which was considerably reduced by solidifying in small lubing. Analysis of the convection indicates that it probably vesulls from a horizontal temperature gradient produced by the Joule heating- of the electvic crirver~t. Due to the strong dependence of this convection upon the specimen radius, it is conclnded that only for specit~ens with radii of less than somewhere between 1 and 2 mm wilt electric field freezing be getlerally effec-tire at enhancing the purification of zone-melting experittierats in loe-melting alloys. Experiments on 0.8-mm lubes illustrate some interesting potential applications of this techniqne as a means of solute control on smcrll specimens. In a number of papers published within the last few years'-4 it has been found that passage of large dc currents through the solid-liquid interface of a freezing alloy produces a change in the solute redistribution accompanying the solidification. It had been predicted theoretically by Hucke et al.s and by Pfann and Wagner that such an effect would occur as the result of electrotransport within the liquid boundary layer at the solid-liquid interface. These authors independently derived the following relation between the effective distribution coefficient and the variables of the process: Where k0 is the equilibrium distribution coefficient, V is the mobility of the solute relative to the solvent, E is the electric field intensity, D is the solute diffusion coefficient, R is the rate of interface motion, and 6 is the boundary layer thickness. Both groups of authors show that this equation predicts the possibility of extending the purification ability of zone-melting experiments by the addition of an electric current. However, there are other effects in addition to electro-transport which could be produced by the high dc current and might, perhaps, invalidate the applicability of Eq. [I]. For example, high electric current might affect the interface reaction or perhaps the equilibrium distribution which was assumed to exist at the interface. It was the purpose of this work to determine the applicability of Eq. [I] by systematically investigating a simple system for which all of the necessary parameters were known. It was of particular interest for speculating on the potential usefulness of this technique to determine the maximum practical field intensities obtainable, and the effect of these high fields upon convective mixing in the liquid. The initial work in this study was published in a previous paper3 which will be referred to as I. In that work, a current density of 2000 amps per sq cm was used with specimen diameters of 5 mm. The results gave a qualitative confirmation of Eq. [I.], and also showed that a large amount of convective mixing was produced in the liquid by the current. The present study is an extension of that work to smaller specimen diameters and higher current densities. Two points were overlooked in I and will be emphasized here: a) the value of ko has not been well-established in the Sn-Bi system and b) the observed convection could be due to thermal convection produced from the Joule heating. EVALUATION OF k0 To evaluate Eq. [ I.] it is necessary to know the value of the equilibrium distribution coefficient, k,. Tn I the value of k, was taken as 0.3 from a published phase diagram.7 According to ansen' the best data on the phase boundaries of the Sn-Bi system are those of Davidson.5 The data of Davidson give a k, value ranging from 0.21 to 0.25 for the compositions studied in this work, or an average value of around 0.23. In a recent publication, Rigaud and Tougas'10 determined ko by means of a solidification technique. For an alloy of approximately the same composition as that used in this work they obtained a ko value of 0.39. Hence, there is considerable uncertainty in the value of ko and, consequently, a series of experiments were made to determine k, more accurately.

The rapid and comparatively recent development of flotation has opened so fascinating a field for study and research that the older processes of gravity concentration no longer receive the attention they deserve. The early work of Munroe1 and Richards,2 and the more recent contributions by Clevenger and Coe,3 Laist and Wiggin,4 Ammon,5 Bardwell,6 Crowfoot,7 and Hayden8 to mention only some which have appeared in our own Transactions-and by Schulz,9 have furnished so much data that to offer something new seems a difficult task. It is still possible, however, to present known facts from a different point of view, and, with this in mind, the writer has undertaken to express basic principles of gravity concentration in terms of simple mathematics and mechanics; the conclusions thus reached will be found to correspond, in general, with those obtained by experimental methods. Rittinger, in his classic Aufbereitungskunde (1867), reached analogous conclusions by way of intricate higher mathematics, for which reason his interesting investigations have remained a sealed book to most of us. The writer hopes that a more elementary treatment of the subject, based in part on Rittinger's methods, may, arouse new interest in the study of basic principles.

The title of this paper, I understand, was suggested by professional mining engineers as an opportunity for someone to pose problems rather than to offer solutions for them, but the paper will merely attempt to pose some of the production problems of the mineral aggregates industry in such manner as to create professional interest in their solution by the mining engineer, geologist, geochemist and the metallurgical engineer versed in mineral-dressing technique. Definition of Mineral Aggregates " Mineral aggregates" may be defined as fragments of any rock or mineral used to supply bulk or volume or substance for a given purpose. For example, mineral aggregates are used in portland-cement concrete to provide bulk with the expenditure of the least feasible amount of cement binder. Mineral aggregates are used without port-land cement or bituminous binder in highway and railway roadbeds to provide substance, to carry loads. provide aggregates are used in filters for water and sewage, to provide substance for the liquid to trickle through. These are only a few typical uses of mineral aggregates. For all these uses, strength, toughness, resistance to abrasion, and durability are usually prime requisites; so, while theeretically mineral aggregates may be of any mineral composition, what really is desired is a mineral composition as nearly inert under the conditions of use as anything of earthly origin can be. Exploration and Possibilities of Development The distribution of deposits of mineral aggregate is universal, since almost any part of the earth,s crust can be used; even the top soil is sometimes used in stabilized surfacing for highways or airport runways. Nevertheless there is ample opportunity for exercise of the talents of the mining engineer and the geologist in finding the particular deposit that will be most economical to develop, keeping in mind such considerations as: (i) quality and mineralogical characteristics of the material; (2) size and permanency of the market; (3) final cost of opening and development of the deposit; (4) selection of location of plant; (5) methods and costs of distribution of the product in comparison with both present and possible future competition; (6) selection of the proper type of operating equipment; (7) estimation of probable waste products and their disposal. These are typical but there are other considerations also. Because profit margins are far smaller than in any comparable mining operation, it is all the more logical to assume that a higher degree of expert knowledge is desirable to make a success of a mineral-aggregates business. The industry has much engilleering talent in its operating branch, but it lacks, to a considerable degree, engineering talent with experience

All the tunneling machines discussed in this chapter are Calweld machines. I have divided the machines designed for soft-to-medium formations into three groups, correlated with typical formations and estimated compressive strengths: 1) Running sand and silt requiring blade cutters. 2) Chalk and clay, requiring drag-type cutters, for compressive strengths ranging from 0 to 2000 psi. 3) Sandstones, hard clays, and limestones, requiring disk cutters, for compressive strengths ranging from 2000 to 20,000 psi. All of the soft-to-medium-formation machines are powered by electric hydraulic or diesel hydraulic pumps. The pumps in turn drive hydraulic motors for the torque reaction. The soft-to-medium-formation machines are enclosed in a 360º shield with a cutting shoe, a center portion of the shield housing the mechanical equipment, and a tail shield. Tunnel supports are usually required, and the supports are normally erected in the tail shield. Our first machine was built in 1963, and all but five of the machines illustrated in the figures with this chapter were built in 1966 and 1967. Some of the machines manufactured will be discussed in the following sections; specific features as development has progressed will be pointed out. HARD-ROCK MACHINE The Calweld hard-rock machine has been designed along basic and accepted principles for a hard-rock mechanical borer. The features of this machine are as follows: 1) Direct electric motor drive through a planetary gear reduction ring and pinion gear, and then to the cutting head through a hollow drive shaft.

Some three years ago the smelter connected with the Chrome, N. J., refinery of the United States Metals Refining Co. found itself embarrassed by constantly increasing piles of unsmelted blast-furnace flue dust. The charge was fine and 10 to 15 per cent. of it was blown over into the flue. Sulphur was at that time too scarce to make the sintering of the finer part of the charge attractive, and raw-ore smelting in a reverberatory with a partly oxidized charge was not to be thought of. A great many schemes were considered, including leaching, blowing into the converters, and briquetting, the problem finally narrowing down to blast roasting and nodulizing. It was found by experiment that blast roasting would not yield a satisfactory sinter without the addition of coke dust or sulphide fines to augment the fuel value of the flue dust, and on this account, together with the low first cost of a kiln, the latter was decided upon. A couple of tons of flue dust were tried out in the experimental kiln in the laboratory at Yorktown, Va., of J. H. Payne, who acted as consulting engineer in this connection. This kiln was approximately 2 ft. in diameter and 20 ft. long and was fired with fuel oil. A run of several hours yielded excellent nodules. The ki1n showed no tendency to build in and form "nose rings" and gave a fuel consumption of 50 gal, of oil per ton of flue dust. There was no indication of any stack loss. The roasting was strongly oxidizing. A study of what full-size kilns were doing on cement clinker and on nodulizing pyrites cinder indicated that a 60 by 6 ft. kiln would certainly not consume over half of the oil per ton of flue dust shown on the test and as fuel oil at that time was selling around 2 1/2 c. per gallon it was decided to let it go at that. A 60 by 6 ft. kiln was decided on, as that size is standard in cement practice, although fast being replaced by much larger ones with their greater fuel economy, and as it fitted in the building space available. Quench aging of supersaturated solid solutions of nitrogen in columbium takes place in reasonable times in the temperature range 300&apos; to 500°C. Changes in internal friction, hardness, and electrical resistivity are found to accompany this change. THERE is practically no detailed information in the literature concerning interstitial solid solutions in either columbium or tantalum. The fact that both of these metals are used extensively commercially in both pure and alloyed states makes studies of their properties of value. While the plan is to study both these metals and their alloys extensively, so far only a small number of measurements have been made. This paper presents data obtained in the initial investigations of columbium. The principal interstitial impurities of columbium are likely to be hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen. The first of these, hydrogen, is outside the scope of internal friction measurements at present and nothing quantitative is known about the initial hydrogen content of the specimens. However, it is believed that it is completely absent after the preliminary heat treatments are carried out. The carbon content of the original samples is low and can be reduced still further during sample preparation. Oxygen is normally present to some extent in columbium and can also be added or removed easily. Nitrogen is also normally present in small amounts and can also be controlled within limits. Since it is not possible yet to remove all the nitrogen from columbium and since it is possible to remove essentially all the oxygen and carbon, initial measurements were made on the alloy system nitrogen in columbium. In this sense then, the alloys are true binary alloys. Little is known about the effects of nitrogen on the physical and metallurgical properties of columbium, so it was necessary to perform some rather elementary measurements on the specimens. These measurements are described briefly in the next section and are discussed in detail in later sections. Scope of the Work That internal friction is associated with diffusion of nitrogen in columbium has been known for some time. It is similar in nature to that for carbon and nitrogen in a-iron. In these latter cases, the information obtained from internal friction has been useful metallurgically.&apos; and it is not too much to expect useful information from similar studies on columbium containing nitrogen. The technique of internal friction measurements is adequately described by Ke2 At a frequency of 1 cps the internal friction peak for nitrogen in columbium occurs at 300°C and that for oxygen at 160°C." So that all the measurements will be meaningful metallurgically, the internal friction has been calibrated by making a measurement of the damping at the two peaks and a measurement of oxygen and nitrogen content by chemical analysis. A comparison of the two gives the following calibration factor: To go from damping capacity expressed in terms of 1/Q to weight percent of oxygen and nitrogen in solid solution in columbium, multiply the peak values of internal friction by about 4 and 3 respectively." Data from which these factors were calculated are presented in Table I. The increase of electrical resistance of columbium caused by the addition of oxygen and nitrogen as interstitial impurities has been quantitatively determined. At room temperature the percentage increase is small for small additions of impurities (<0.1 wt pct); as the temperature is lowered it becomes an increasingly larger factor of the total resistance. An empirical relation has been established to express the resistivity at — 195°C in terms of weight percent of oxygen and nitrogen in solid solution. It is easy to make supersaturated solid solutions of nitrogen in columbium and to observe aging phenomena. The optimum aging temperature, as in the case for carbon and nitrogen in a-iron, occurs at the temperature for which the time necessary for a single place-change in diffusion is about 1 to 10 millisec. This means for nitrogen in columbium that significant property changes should take place for this alloy at about 400" to 500°C in reasonable time intervals. Results of such aging experiments are

The reesistivity of Cu-Pd alloys of 9.6 to 29 pct Pd alloys was measured after plastic deformzation in tension. For all compositions a continzting decrease in resistivity with increasing plastic strain was observed. By comparison with the results of Damask on a brass ad Cu3Au, it was deduced that these anonzalous decreases in resistivity are due to the decrease in short-vunge order caused by cold work. An anomalous decrease in the resistivity of cold-worked CU-Pd alloys was first reported by Jaumot and Sawatzky.&apos; They observed decreases in the electrical resistivity when disordered Cu-Pd alloys drawing at room temperature. Recently, a similar anomaly was reported by Aarts and Houston-Mac-Mi1lan2 in Ag-Pd alloys containing 10 to 45 pct Pd. The plastic deformation in this case was produced by tensile strain at liquid-nitrogen temperatures. For AE-Pd alloys the relative resistivity change becomes positive for tensile strains of about 20 pct.

MOST papers on xanthate have dealt with principles rather than practice. On the assumption that many millmen are interested in knowing where and in what manner the xanthates are being used in mills other than their own, this paper will summarize the results of a recent survey of North American plants. A brief background story and a description of the xanthates will be followed with the results of that survey; then a few observations will be made on storage, feeding, and ore testing. The first xanthate was made in 1822 by Zeise of the University of Copenhagen. With commendable scientific detachment (or perhaps a bad cold) Zeise ignored a more pervading quality of the substance and named it for its color, after the Greek word "xanthos," meaning yellow. During the first 80 years of its recorded existence xanthate found use only in.small quantity as an insecticide; after the turn of the century there was some further demand for it in the vulcanization of rubber. It was not until 1922, by coincidence the centennial of Zeise&apos;s discovery, that C. H. Keller of San Francisco, seeking sulphidizing agents, recalled xanthate in connection with his experience years earlier when he had seen this material used in Europe to combat grape phylloxera. His successful tests with the new flotation reagent culminated in the basic xanthate patent (U. S. 1,554,216) in 1925. In the minds of many metallurgists the introduction of xanthate as a flotation reagent is identified with the beginnings of alkaline circuits, the first use of chemical collectors, and the beginning of selective flotation. Actually, these preceded xanthatc by a number of years. The alkaline circuit in lead-zinc flotation was introduced by Lyster as early as 1912. In 1922 Sheridann and Griswold made their momentous discovery (Timber Butte) that alkali cyanides and zinc sulphate effectively inhibited the flotation of pyrite and sphalerite in pulps made alkaline with sodium carbonate or bicarbonate. The use of lime to retard pyrite in copper flotation began within two years after Ralston directed attention to its possibilities in 1917. These were the beginnings of modern selective flotation, which was practiced successfully on copper-iron ores at Nacozari in 1922, and at Inspiration, Cananea, and others only shortly afterward. In the lead-zinc mills, selective flotation was of even greater economic importance at that time. The Sunnyside plant of U. S. Smelting, Refining, and Mining Co. used the process earlier than 1920, and Consolidated, Timber Butte, and others soon followed. As a chemical collector xanthate was relatively a latecomer, for the Corliss patent of 1917 covered the first of these, alpha-naphthylamine, and the Perkins patent of 1918 the second, thiocarbanilid. Both of these were in extensive use before Keller&apos;s xanthate made its commercial debut in 1923. There is general agreement, nonetheless, that the introduction of xanthate was

Slip lines in deformed copper single crystals exhibit very pronounced cross-slip and clustering if the stress axes are not too far from <100>. This orientation dependence seems to persist whether or not attempts are made to reduce the bending constraints of ordinary mechanical tests. THE purpose of this paper is to report some microscopic features of the plastic deformation of copper single crystals. The material used was OFHC copper obtained from the American Brass Co. Single crystals about 3 in. long and 5/16 in. in diameter were made by lowering graphite crucibles containing this copper out of the hot zone of a vertical tubular furnace at a rate of 1 1/4 in. per hr. The furnace atmosphere was nitrogen. The orientations of the crystals were determined by the back-reflection Laue technique.&apos; The X-ray spots usually indicated a slight lineage structure of not more than a degree or two. The crystallography of slip is discussed in Schmid and Boas.&apos; The terms classical slip, cross-slip, and conjugate slip are used here with the same meanings as in ref. 3. Compression Specimen 17 (Fig. 1) was selected because the resolved shearing stresses on eight slip systems dif- fered at most by a factor of 1.2. It was hoped that in this situation such effects as cross-slip might be made more prominent. Two intersecting planes parallel to the stress axis were ground on the crystal, using optical abrasive on a lead lap. The large plane was approximately perpendicular to the plane of the axis and the primary slip direction. Its exact orientation was determined by X-ray. The smaller made an angle of 49" with the larger, measured by reflecting a small light source. The specimen was etched with nitric acid until its diameter had been reduced 0.010 in., and then was given a metallographic polish and very

The year 1929 was one of continued activity in the petroleum industry of Indiana and Illinois but the new production obtained has not been sufficient to offset the decline in the production of the old wells. (Table 1). Drilling costs have not changed materially during the year and the prices of crude oil have increased slightly so that the prospects for further testing are good. The total number of completions in Illinois in 1929 (Table 2) was greater than for any year since 1917. More than half of these were in the Dupo field, St. Clair County, and the development of this field was largely responsible for the increased ratio of producers to dry holes in the state as a whole. In the southeastern Illinois field which has produced about 97 per cent. of the state&apos;s petroleum the number of completions was greater than in 1928 and the percentage of producers was a little higher. Although a number of scattered wildcat tests were drilled most of them were not located on favorable structure and the only noteworthy discovery was that of a shale-gas horizon at shallow depth in Morgan County in western Illinois where gas has been produced for a number of years from sandstone and limestone. In Indiana the number of completions (Table 2) was only slightly less than in 1928. Most of the new wells were drilled in the southwestern part of the state, which now produces more than 90 per cent. of Indiana&apos;s petroleum.

IN this paper, which is a logical extension of my paper, The Laws of Intrusion, 1 the various pressures of emanation and their mechanical causes and effects on the large scale of nature are determined, .and a classification of emanations is deduced therefrom. The Subterranean Sea. The subterranean sea is here defined as the intercommunicating water contained in the trains of pores and fissures of the rocks down to great depths. Whether the actual amount of water constituting this subterranean sea be large or small, does not enter into the present argument, since the static pressure of this water at any particular depth is not a function of the quantity : it involves only the depth and the density of the water. Densities. The total pressure at depths down to 10 or 15 miles is made up of the rock-stresses investigated in my previous papers, and the pressure of the subterranean sea. The latter component must evidently be equal to the weight of a solid column of the overlying water of unit sectional area. As water expands with heat, it should really be necessary to sum the density at every level. A knowledge of the densities of water under a variety of conditions is therefore needed, but does not seem ever to have been ascertained for such combined pressures and temperatures as we have to consider. Tin production and export from the Far East are still a long way off from the prewar figures. The Malayan Peninsula, which had a rather good start directly after the war largely because of stock piles found in Singapore and elsewhere, has since been hampered in the rehabilitation of its tin mines and dredging operations by material shortages and, more recently and more severely, by revolts and attacks of communist elements and gangster bands. These hindrances make working in the mines dangerous and form a daily threat against the valuable and highly vulnerable dredges. Contrary to the conditions in Malaya are those on the tin islands of Billiton, Banka, and Singkep-all in the Netherlands East Indies-where the Dutch have re-established peaceful relations with the population. Dutch efforts since the fall of 1945 have been rewarded by continuously increasing production, extension of production facilities, and return of moderate prosperity, complete safety, and all-out co-operation among the population ? native and Chinese ? to the benefit of all concerned.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that the State of Kansas contains one of the largest reserve areas for oil exploration in the United States. During the year 1936 no less than 54 new oil pools were discovered by drilling. In addition, seven gas pools were found, which may develop into oil pools when deeper horizons are tested. Several old pools increased their reserves when production was found in lower strata. The data presented in Table 2 indicate that nearly 2000 wells were drilled in the state during 1936. Of these more than 1214 found commercial quantities of oil and at least 61 found marketable quantities of gas. The data are conservative because complete results on drilling are not available for the eastern part of the state. Ellis, Rice and Russell Counties share honors with a total of 10 new pools in each. Barton County is prominent with six pools; while those counties claiming fewer new pools are Clark, Ellsworth, Harvey, McPherson, Ness, Pawnee, Rooks, Stafford and Trego. Important additions to our gas reserves were found in Finney and Haskell Counties, which are north of the extensive Hugoton gas area and may some day be part of it. At the close of the year there were 17,317 wells in the state rating as producers. By far the larger share (14,000) were classed as strippers and allowed to flow 100 per cent of their potential capacity, thus accounting for 33,500 bbl. a day. The remaining wells, capable of producing from 15 up to over 6000 bbl. per day, were limited in output according to these amounts. The largest wells having a potential of from 3000 to 7000 were allowed to flow from 2 to 3½ per cent of their official potential capacity. The percentage rises until wells of 15 to 20-bbl. capacity have a rating of slightly over 83. On the basis of these calculations the total potential capacity of all wells was 1,667,814 bbl., and the daily amount allowed was 175,851. Nine of the pools most recently opened were still unable to market their oil and were classified as "shut-in" pools. Total production for the state for 1936 was somewhat over 58 million barrels. THE New Cornelia Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corporation is at Ajo, Pima County, Ariz. It is at the southern terminus of the Tucson, Cornelia and Gila Bend Railroad, which connects with the Southern Pacific Railroad at Gila Bend, Ariz., approximately 43 miles to the north. HISTORY Early history of the Ajo district has been related by A. W. Allen1 and by T. A. Rickard.2 Briefly, steps looking to the large-scale development of the ore body were instituted as early as 1912. This work culminated in the equipment of the property for open-pit mining by steam shovels. Ores initially mined carried economic amounts of copper carbonates as the principal copper-bearing mineral. Treatment methods developed for the extraction of the copper content involved leaching and a 5000-ton leaching plant was constructed and placed in operation in early 1917. Description of methods and equipment employed in this plant has been given by A. A. Tobelmann and James A. Potter.3 As exhaustion of the carbonate ore body neared, and mining oper-ations exposed an adequate tonnage of sulphide ores, a 5000-ton con-centrator was constructed for their treatment. That plant has been described by H. Kenyon Burch.4 Construction was completed and the plant was placed in operation in early 1924. Changes made in the original plant to improve practices and increase production will be the subject of subsequent paragraphs of this paper.

Most papers on xanthate have dealt with principles rather than practice. On the assumption that many millmen are interested in knowing where and in what manner the xanthates are being used in mills other than their own, this paper will summarize the results of a recent survey of North American plants. A brief background story and a description of the xanthates will be followed with the results of that survey; then a few observations will be made on storage, feeding, and ore testing. The first xanthate was made in 1822 by Zeise of the University of Copenhagen. With commendable scientific detachment (or perhaps a bad cold) Zeise ignored a more pervading quality of the substance and named it for its color, after the Greek word "xanthos," meaning yellow. During the first 80 years of its recorded existence xanthate found use only in small quantity as an insecticide; after the turn of the century there was some further demand for it in the vulcanization of rubber. It was not until 1922, by coincidence the centennial of Zeise&apos;s discovery, that C. H. Keller of San Francisco, seeking sul-phidizing agents, recalled xanthate in connection with his experience years earlier when he had seen this material used in Europe to combat grape phylloxera. His successful tests with the new flotation reagent culminated in the basic xanthate patent (U. S. 1,554,216) in 1925. In the minds of many metallurgists the introduction of xanthate as a flotation reagent is identified with the beginnings of alkaline circuits, the first use of chemical collectors, and the beginning of selective flotation. Actually, these preceded xanthate by a number of years. The alkaline circuit in lead-zinc flotation was introduced by Lyster as early as 1912. In 1922 Sheridan and Griswold made their momentous discovery (Timber Butte) that alkali cyanides and zinc sulphate effectively inhibited the flotation of pyrite and sphalerite in pulps made alkaline with sodium carbonate or bicarbonate. The use of lime to retard pyrite in copper flotation began within two years after Ralston directed attention to its possibilities in 1917. These were the beginnings of modern selective flotation, which was practiced successfully on copper-iron ores at Nacozari in 1922, and at Inspiration, Cananea, and others only shortly afterward. In the lead-zinc mills, selective flotation was of even greater economic importance at that time. The Sunnyside plant of U. S. Smelting, Refining, and Mining Co. used the process earlier than 1920, and Consolidated, Timber Butte, and others soon followed. As a chemical collector xanthate was relatively a latecomer, for the Corliss patent of 1917 covered the first of these, alpha-naphthylamine, and the Perkins patent of 1919 the second, thiocarbanilid. In the routine examination of a wide variety of metal specimens it is sometimes necessary to have special methods of polishing in order to retain and reveal certain details in each specimen. Among such special cases is the retention of graphite in malleable and gray cast irons, the preservation of all types of nonmetallic inclusions in both hard and soft steels, obtaining a scratch-free surface with soft metals, and avoiding the usual relief effects with very hard specimens such as tool metals con-taining various carbide and nitride phases. It is the purpose of this paper to give an account of some of these special polishing methods in use at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. The polishing procedures outlined have been found to give uniform results. It is obvious that only general rules and the most important working details can be given here. Following these rules, the polisher can obtain satisfactory results if he possesses the necessary patience and has a sincere desire to give as nearly perfect a finish as possible to his work.

DURING the past summer the writer was asked by the Illinois State Geological Survey to make a study of some of its economic geological problems with regard to the applicability of geophysical methods of prospecting to their solution. The following four problems were sug-gested for investigation: (1) the fluorspar area of Southern Illinois, (2) oil structures in the south central part of the state, (3) the lead and zinc-bearing area of northwestern Illinois, and (4) the water supply and gravel deposits of the glacial drift. The prime requirements were to find a means of obtaining a maximum of useful information with a fairly modest outlay of expenditure for technical staff and equipment. The method of procedure adopted was that of making a preliminary study of each of the problems named by means of available office data and published reports with supplementary field reconnaissance where necessary.

THE investigation discussed in this paper concerns phase equilibria in the alumina-silica-water system. Studies in this system are part of a re¬search project sponsored by the Geophysics Branch of the Office of Naval Research2 directed toward increasing knowledge of the stability relations of metamorphic mineral assemblages. Inasmuch as metamorphic rocks consist largely of aluminosilicate struc¬tures, many of them hydrated, the system alumina-silica-water is a logical starting point for the systematic laboratory study of metamorphic mineral systems. Although logical, this is not, however, an easy approach to the problem because of the very great difficulty of obtaining transformations among structures in response to changes in temperature, pressure, and con¬centration. Commonly equilibrium among the phases in this system is exceed¬ingly difficult to attain. New laboratory techniques are required to produce certain structural rearrangements, such as inversion of diaspore to boehmite or the transformation of alumina-silica mixtures to andalusite or kyanite. Phase equilibrium data for the alumina-silica-water system are consequently only partly complete, and only a summary progress report is presented here. Crystalline phases in the alumina-silica-water system are numerous and many are common minerals. The oxide components exist as: quartz, tridymite, cristobalite, corundum, water, and ice. Binary compounds occurring naturally are: sillimanite, andalusite, kyanite, and mullite in the alumina-silica system and gibbsite, boehmite, and diaspore in the alumina-water system. The most abundant among the ternary compounds is the composition A12O3.2SiO2.¬2H2O, existing in the four structural modifications, kaolinite, nacrite, dickite, and halloysite. The hydrated form of halloysite, A12O3.2SiO2.4H2O, is here called endellite. Pyrophyllite, A12O3.4SiO2.H2O, is the third ternary compound of natural occurrence. In addition to these minerals, two other ternary crystalline phases have been encountered in this study. The first is a structure resembling montmorillonite and corresponding perhaps to the pure aluminian end member of the beidellite series. The other has a composition approximating A12O3.2SiO2.H2O but its composition and structure are still in doubt.
